Reporter the Maricopa County Board of supervisors had just received this subpoena demanding election Officials Hand over millions of ballots to state republican politicians who were launching fraud investigations. One of the Object Iives was get their hands on the ballot before the January 6th hearing in the capitol. They wanted evidence to support dese dese decertifying the election. Its constitution dammed. One of the main reasons i became republican was because i thought the republican party was the party of the rule of law. Reporter but in what now is being investigated as a possible crime, trump tried to convince Georgias Secretary of State Brad Raffensperger to change the vote count. He was actually trying to create conditions where he would be declared the winner even though he actually lost the election. It is incredibly dangerous and destabilizing. Just how directly personally involved the president was, the pressure he was putting on Jeffrey Rosen. It was real. Very real. And it was very specific. Trump tried to Pressure Rosen to file a lawsuit in the supreme court, to declare that the Electoral College votes Cast Cannot Be counted. His Chief Of Staff was repeatedly emailing top d. O. J. Officials at least five times asking they investigate Conspiracy Theories about Voter Fraud. Its an attempt to use the Department Of Justice in order to influence the election thats run at the state and local level. So its dangerous. Its inappropriate, and it should be unacceptable. Acting Attorney General rosen and the Deputy Ag Donahue said no. The country came very close to a coup. I think we can expect going forward its not just going to be Donald Trump. Its going to be whoever the next iteration of him is that is going to say they didnt lose. It was stolen. It was rigged. And the point he makes over and over again is leaders have to stand up and lead and what has happened is that republicans, and this poll shows this very clearly, are consuming information thats being driven, misinformation, Disinformation By Former president Donald Trump, and republicans, this number, this 59 who believe trump won in 2020 is why republicans are so afraid that they cannot win a primary if they dont buy into this. What does that say to you . It feels cowardly on the one hand, on the other hand, theres potentially truth to it because of the way the districts are drawn. If there is someone in a more moderate lane of Fred Upton in michigan who decides theyre going to stand, and the voters throw them out, the republican nominee is something else. Thats a swing district, a democrat may win there. Other places thats not the case, its always going to be held by a republican, and that potentially pushes it off the edge. There is, i think, a certain level of cowardice with doing it that way. Its essentially choosing winning over principle, and you saw some republicans during the Trump Administration Step up in the Middle And Rtry to criticiz him, and they fell one by one, jeff flake, bob corker, the list goes on, and were left here. And i think, too, for me watching all of this, oh, our system is going to hold, its going to be fine. Were listening to this entertainer whos out there essentially entertaining america, and i was at the capitol January 6th and it became extraordinarily real, and the more we learned about that, it could have been so much worse than it was, and were facing another potential incident like this on saturday as a man is arrested with White Supremacist symbols and weapons in a truck outside the Democratic National Committee Down The Street from the capitol. When you line all of those facts up, its astonishing that this is america today. Trump rewrote the game. Its not history. Its now. Its today with the California Recall. Its happening before our eyes. That Election Administrator now in our very well established democracy has lots of checks and balances is now a dangerous profession. The Danger Isnt just the obvious threat of violence, but the threat to democracy. Experts say Donald Trump and his republican allies have injected enough doubt into the Election Process to threaten its stability. Its going to be a selffulfilling prophesy. He is undermining the system in a way that is going to cause the system to detieriorate. Some republicans are undermining the system with new unnecessary legislation. Across the united states republican State Lawmakers are passing law after law, aimed at fixing a problem that does not exist. Mass Voter Fraud. This bill, ill say it one more time will make it easier to vote and harder to cheat in pennsylvania. Easy to vote, and hard to cheat. In arizona, we want to make it easy to vote, but hard to cheat. At least 18 states have enacted 31 laws with new restrictions on Voting Methods since the beginning of the year. The most concerning are being called Election Subversion laws. Impacting how elections are run, and whos in charge. They didnt like the fact that they lost those states, and so now theyre rewriting the rules for the future, but theyre doing it in a way that will make it extremely problematic because they make it very partisan. Former new Jersey Governor Christine todd whitman, a republican, is part of a group working to safeguard u. S. Democracy. What you have with local official secretaries of state and others are people who are trained to oversee elections. That is their job to do that. Now what you see in the states, texas, arizona, georgia, they are starting to pull it back and put it in the hands of legislatures, political legislatures. Case in point, Georgias Election Integrity act, 98 pages long. Signed into law by governor Brian Kemp repeating that republican mantra. This pbill makes it easy to vote and hard to cheat. It strips power from the Georgia Secretary of state and allows lawmakers to intervene in how counties administer and count the vote. Sounds like it makes it easier for the politicians to cheat. You could have that perception. Youre going to have your i. D. With him. Herd county georgias elections supervisor. I believe its a massive Power Grab. The Secretary Of State has been removed as a Voting Member of the state election board. Basically tossing the Secretary Of State aside for a political person. Exactly. Reporter in arizona, republican legislators have made their Power Grab blatant, passing a law that strips some Election Oversight powers from the Arizona Secretary of state, currently a democrat and gives them to the arizona Attorney General currently a republican. It expires in less than two years, making sure its a republican who oversees any disputes in the important midterm elections. Gates says his partys Big Lie about Vote Fraud is getting way out of hand. Im worried about the people who look at this now, they have listened to their leaders, republican leaders, and they are now convinced that our system is corrupt. That theres this large conspiracy and we have yet to see many republicans speak out, and tell people, no, the election was fair. Its time to move on. Enough is enough. In texas, which trump won, republican legislators pass Add Law that bans drive through and 24hour Voting favored in heavil heavily minority houston, and creates new hurdles for mailin voters. The Texas Legislation also makes it a crime for election workers to interfere with partisan poll watchers. Were at a Tipping Point as a nation, and our democracy is at stake. Democratic legislators like Carl Sherman fled the state, trying to prevent a vote on the bill. The standoff ended after 38 days. It matters because weve got a long history of Cherry Picking who can vote, and who can not vote. If all of these Election Laws being surfaced in republican led states seem like a coordinated effort, thats because it is. We have honed in on these eight specific focused states. A former Trump Administration Official who now heads up the conservative Heritage Action for america said the group had made recommendations to several states, which ended up in election related bills. From there as we create the echo chamber, were working with State Legislators to make sure they have the information they need to draft the bills or we have a sentinel on our bhehalf. Give them the model legislation. It has the Grass Roots from the Bottom Up type of vibe. Donald trumps Big Lie, and hi Partys Willingness to go along with the facade is now the biggest threat to free and fair elections we face. It used to be unthinkable to contemplate Election Subversion in the united states. It is now not only become thinkable but something we need to spend the next few years guarding against. Its greatest danger facing american democracy today. Its dangerous, john, because its destabilizing according to the Election Officials and experts we talked to. A democracy depends on the losers agreeing that the election was conduct instead a fair way, and agreeing to fight another day. If you dont have that acceptance, you dont have democracy, and right now with Donald Trump and his followers dwoe, we dont have that. What was the impact of that comment from you . What did people then say to you after you refused to say that this election was stolen . Immediately after that interview, the president tweeted at me by name, referring to me as a rhino, saying that i was being used and refusing to look at Voter Fraud in philadelphia. Of course there was no widespread Voter Fraud in philadelphia. But thats really what led to a series of Death Threats and, you know, efforts to coerce. Death threats and efforts to coerce, not just, i imagine you, but also your family . Right. I mean, this rhetoric, these threats that were all too familiar with, and unfortunately, as you know, and your Report Shows and the brennan Center Report shows, im not unique at all. Its going on across the country. But the rhetoric is an empty rhetoric, it has a purpose, and that purpose is resulting in good, professional fair minded election fishes across the country not running for reelection or being defeated by people who have partisan political intelligences to disrupt or discredit legitimate election results. What happens then . What happens if the civics minded people get pushed out . Well, i mean, thats the big danger is that if people who intentionally want to discredit fair and free elections are successful, when a majority of my party believes that the election was stolen, believes that when we lose its because the election was rigged, its really left to just one party right now to uphold the democratic process. If that falls and it goes from a majority of a party to a majority of americans, then i think thats an even greater danger. Im afraid were facing that right now. Republicans in your state are trying to launch a 2020 Election Audit of sorts. Whats your feeling about that . Well, as a former Senior Auditor for the federal government, the gio, i have very strong feelings about it in really that what has been discussed isnt an audit at all, its a partisan political enterprise and as an Election Administrator, that concerns me greatly as well because its really not about finding answers. Its really about trying to discredit the fair election results, and i would add that since we have been discussing threats, you know, those threats really spiked around election time leading up to certification, they go away, but whenever this talk of audits and bringing to other states what has happened in arizona occurs, the threats resume as they have here in philadelphia with my fellow commissioners and i. Let me show you the numbers first of all, looking at the exact of this disease, cases, hospitals, and deaths, blacks and hispanics, 1. 1 times more likely to be diagnosed. Two times more likely to die for hispanics, the inequities are greater. What this new Data Shows is you look at that and try to match up the idea of vaccination rates, and again, you see inequities in the wrong direction. They looked at for example, in california and texas, they looked at Hispanic Population in california, and found despite these numbers, despite the case rates, 54 likelihood of cases in california, you had about 28 of the population being vaccinated. So youre not vaccinating the people who are having the highest burden of this disease. They saw this in texas as well. Again, 15 of the cases represented by blacks but only 8 of vaccinations. I mean, you obviously want to make sure vaccinations are widespread, but as weve talked about for so long, the people who are the most vulnerable, the most at risk certainly need to be targeted.
