There was criticism over Governor Newsoms policies with respect to covid19, and that led republicans to get the 1. 5 million signatures necessary to force this on the ballot. In the wave of the delta variant, newsom and his supporters are happy to have this election framed as somebody who will follow the science, versus an outsider, someone who would loosen restrictions, which could lead to more cases and deaths. This year, the leading republican running for governor is the closest thing to a Trump Clone that i have ever seen in your state. Is the clone of Donald Trump, can you imagine him being governor of the state . You cant let that happen. All of this is moot unless the recall is successful, and all of the polls show newsom cruising to victory. We shall have to see once the ballots are open. I think we have to see what other elections look like. A recall is a little different and allows people to make claims that they might not otherwise. Its hard to imagine Donald Trump would not make this claim otherwise, and its hard to imagine some candidates, i dont think all, i think there are a number of candidates who are long time politicians who are not going to see this as a road happen. There are clearly candidates who are going to use this to say, when they lose, they say this before the ballots are cast. Its not actually about the result and what it might be, its just about if they might lose, and i think there will be other instances where we see it. I dont know how seriously its going to impact future elections. As i said, republicans are turning their own turnout when they are doing this model. It almost becomes a selffulfilling prophesy. 59 of republicans in the recent Cnn Poll say that supporting the Big Lie from the 2020 election is important to being a republican now. It is foundational, john, at this moment to being a republican, not incidental, 60 . Thats is a big number. Its a big number, and the Point Off Of What Maggie said is as the republican base of support has shrunk and gotten increasingly radicalized, theyre turning away from the legitimacy of elections period. Right. Theyre turning toward force, toward authoritarianism, in some cases toward violence. Obviously that is a fringe of the party, but its a fringe thats tolerated by the wider party, and theyre leading themselves further and further. So republicans in washington tried to discourage the investigation into the January 6th insurrection. Now they are after initially being shaken by the insurrection, which of course was an assault on the democratic result, theyre treating the offenders who treated the atrocities of the capitol, as political prisoners. You say an election is rigged because you know youre going to lose the election, and the election itself is not decisive in it view, its the ability to rise up against the process. Democracy is not important because you would believe the election. Theres a through line between these absurd claims about the California Recall which isnt even done yet. Theres a through line of the protest over the shoulder, which way is the capitol. Its this way. Well done. I think one major question i have, is it was a powerful speech. No question. I dont think it was the most important of his career but certainly up there. Militarys final Drone Strike on a car in kabul. Just hours before u. S. Troops were fraught from aversion. U. S. Military claims it hit a legitimate terrorist target. Anna coren joins us right now. This report contains scenes that are graphic and may be hard to watch. What have you learned . Reporter doubts have been raised over whether the u. S. Military actually hit an Isisk Target when they dropped a missile on a car in a Kabul Neighborhood two weeks ago. According to the family and colleagues of the targeted victim, 43yearold Aide Worker zamarai amati, the u. S. Got it wrong. The investigation was led by journalists. We have spoken to 30 bpeople in total, including five colleagues who were with zamarai that day. We have spoken to two Bomb Experts they dispute the military claims there was a significant explosion after the Drone Strike, code for Explosive Material, which is u. S. Suspected. If there was a secondary blast, it most likely was the Vehicle Gas Tank exploding. We have analyzed the footage youre looking at that day right now from zamarai in the office. What is critical to note is a u. S. Official with knowledge of the operation who spoke to cnn said the u. S. Military never knew who was driving the car. S. Ngo for 15 years who feeds the poor, was an Isisk Facilitator with Explosive Material in his car for an attack on the airport. He was not the only one who was killed. According to the extended family who live together in his compound. Nine other Family Members died, seven children, three of whom were toddlers. We have seen this distressing footage of charred remains of what was left of the bodies, parents trying to recognize a hand, a foot, an ear to work out which Body Part belonged to their child. The pentagon says an invest is underway but maintains the strike was based on good intelligence and that no military works harder to prevent civilian casualties. Its incredibly difficult to hear the details, and i wonder what your reaction is to learning this, and what needs to happen . This is a sad and tragic end to two decades of sadness and tragedy. So, you know, i think we need to put it into context that this isnt the first civilian casualty that were seeing. It has been happening for two decades. There have always been civilian casualties in afghanistan which resulted at the hands of the United States, and also afghan forces as well. Just last year, there were over A Thousand strikes. Many of them did result in civilian casualties so when i hear the news of this familys death, the deaths in this family, im reminded that americans have forgotten about afghans and so its great that people are paying attention now, but this has been happening for two decades, and im ready to close this chapter in our 9 11 history. Im ready for the u. S. To stop conducting strikes that kill civilians. I think its time. Its important now, i think, because it reveals what the situation will be going forward because this strike happened at the moment when all u. S. Troops were being withdrawn. So what does this speak or how does this speak to the situation now and in the future, josh . Sure. Well, its obvious and tragic that there have been mistakes over the course of the 20year war in afghanistan. This is different. This is new. This is the first example of what it looks like to conduct Counter Terrorism in afghanistan when we dont have troops on the ground, and we were assured we would have these rising capabilities, everything would be fine. Can you tell me what over the horizon capabilities. Doing Counter Terrorism without any people on the ground in afghanistan and no local partners. As important as the system was, this is worse. We didnt bring the troops home, we said do the same Counter Terrorism, from the same country, farther away, and these mistakes are going go up and down. Withdrawal had benefits and costs. We have to understand that this is a by product of our decision, right or wrong, to withdraw all of our troops, and to leave our partners holding the bag until the taliban was the only people on the ground that We Could deal with. And also, i think its pretty clear that the u. S. Military doesnt have good intelligence, okay, because if theyre claiming good intelligence, what does bad Intelligence Look like at this point, how is it they could not know who theyre attacking, and there was an imminent threat when they killed a guy in his own Parking Lot in his own driveway around a bunch of children. We dont have good intelligence, and the taliban are not good security partners. We found that out when isisk hit the airport. Its not working. Thats not to say withdrawing was good or bad, We Can say that the war on terrorism is over but the terrorists have a vote, and We Cant take our troops out and think everything is going to be fine. As it turns out, the war on terrorism continues, even if afghanistan. Theyre not going to kill us just because were not there, and we have to fight that mission with one hand tied behind our back. Were starting to see what that looks like. Its not pretty. On the question of intelligence, we have to be specific on what we mean when we say intelligence failure. The u. S. Made a precise attack, it was very precise. We have superior hardware. We have superior surveillance capabilities, however, this was a targeting failure. We dont have the same kind of assets on the ground to verify if our targets are actually the right targets. We have seen this again over the past two decades. Now we dont have the military footprint or diplomatic footprint to verify this. The question becomes what do we need in order to prevent u. S. National security from being threatened. One school of thought is we dont need to worry so much because we dont have people on the ground so we wont be targets. What that means is groups like isisk are going to look like american targets all over the world. They done need to look at afghanistan. They can look to the gulf, to europe, and work with organizations that share their values. I think we have to look at it in a different way now. Are you saying that josh is making the point this is emblematic of what were going to see with the overthehorizon capabilities. I think we have lots of partners to work with, Middle East partners, well be sharing intelligence with them like we have the entire time. Afghanistan happens to be the place where thousands of new terrorists have been released from a bunch of prisons and the government includes a network linked to al qaeda, and All Of A Sudden we have absolutely nothing to say when people say, okay, how are we going to deal with that threat. We have been told that, oh, we dont need people on the ground but there was a guy who said we do need people on the ground, Vice President Joe Biden when he was campaigning. When President Trump tried to withdraw troops from syria, President Biden was against that, we need a small contingent to reverse terrorism. Why was he right on syria, and not On Afghanistan . We shouldnt assume the u. S. Wont have people on the ground. We dont theres always going to be some kind of u. S. Intelligence focus on south asia, On Afghanistan. There will be. Just not right now. You guys, theres no government right now in afghanistan. Theres an interim government and the United States is trying to figure out what its relationship is with the taliban, and other countries in the region. Once that gets sorted out, which they are working very hard on in the multilateral space, i think were going to see a little bit more, a better sense of how to approach these threats. Thats one way to go. The other way to go is We Could just have an increasingly dangerous situation that festers until it comes back to haunt us, which is exactly what happened before 9 11, which is exactly what happened in iraq, when we left the Forever War ten years ago, that We Can say the Forever Wars are going to end, but they dont end just because we say. They dont end just because we leave. Theyre going on because they want to kill us. Josh and tamila, i think there are a lot of not great answers to the question. Just two hours away from Marjorie Stoneman douglas high school where 17 people were killed in 2018. According to investigators, the boys allegedly studied the Columbine Shootings, and were researching how to find firearms on the Black Market and make pipe bombs. Our school resource officer, a program we have, absolute heroes, but most importantly, the student that comes forward, the teacher that comes forward. People see it, say it, they make the call. We dont ignore red flags, and thats most important here because if not, i could be sitting here talking about a mass shooting. So again, how far along were they . Well, the plan had the plan was in place. They were surfing the Black Market for guns. The they were surfing the internet, they were sensationalized by columbine. They are inspired. They were all over, the maps of The School. They had maps of exactly where our Security Cameras were. They knew exactly what they needed to do, and what they wanted to do. We start talking and interviewing multiple students and witnesses, and one witness says, you know, at lunch, both our suspects were talking about shooting up this whole school, so now we pull the other suspect in, and now we find a map. And from there we begin our investigation. Now, what does that mean to us . We leave no stone unturned. Our remain time Information Center goes into work, into action, we take search warrants on both houses, and inside the houses we find guns. We find the knives, we find ammo.
