I thought it was stunning. I think it may be the most memorable speech he has ever given. When he spoke about, you know, the america i know, 20 years ago, that america. Clearly america is different now. I think he was talking about the elephant in the room. Former president s dont usually do that on these kind of occasions. And i think i knew what kind of audience he was going to be having and i think its something he feels so strongly about that he had to say it. And a lot of times politicians dont do that. But the former president decide ed that he had to. He told the truth. Yeah. And you cant do that in todays Republican Party. Br brianna, he went where trumps Republican Party cant go. 9 11 was an act of terror. January 6th was an act of terror. But in todays Republican Party, you cant say that. You cant Say Biden won fair and square. You cant even say January 6th was a bad thing. Again, i engage with hundreds of republican base voters every day. You cant go there. You cant say what bush said. And it makes you a pariah. Yes. You may be a pariah. Yes. He is a pariah, bush is a pariah. He knew what the reaction was going to be. I think this was a moral thing for him to do. Both of you were saying here, in the same cnn poll, which shows 60 of the republicans want trump as a leader, we asked people if believing that the election was stolen is somehow a ticket to being a member of the Republican Party. And you could see, add up very important and somewhat important. 59 . 59 of republicans say that believing trump won in 2020 is a ticket to admission. 60 basically. John, its stunning. What its saying is 60 some percent of republicans are saying you have to deny the truth to be a republican. I think that number is low. It gives you a sense of mistrust in government, mistrust of democracy, mistrust of elections. And this is something thats been perpetuated by the former president , obviously. And this is the political identity now. Their political identity is with someone who says your government is lying to you and theyre trying to pull a Fast One on you, and your elections are rigged and democracy is not what you think it is. This is trumps legacy, is this great lie. Were already seeing other republican candidates. Larry elder, out in california, is already saying before the Election Tomorrow that its going to be rigged. Were see ing other republicans around the country already do this. Its so destructive. Whats interesting, as you mentioned, the Republican Party of today is one where you have to support the big lie, like this Poll Number where 36 of republicans believe its very important to support it. This lie that President Trump won the election, the lie, to be clear, that Jn 6th is based on. And it makes me think of a conversation i was having just before 9 11 with an american overseas going to college when 9 11 happened and they were surrounded by some people who were cheering that it had happened. And they described feeling so incredibly alone and disgusted. And thats, in a way, some of what i see happening when it comes to how people relate to January 6th, right . Theres a divide that there wasnt about January 6th. Theres a divide there wasnt about 9 11 when it comes to January 6th. The whole question, as you saw on capitol hill. Were these people tourists . Was this a walk in a park . Were they not trying to do damage . All of those kinds of things. Were they not insurrectionists . And everybody that thinks theyre insurrectionists say yes, they were trying to destroy a symbol of american democracy. Thats what george bush was saying. But others are saying, no, they really got pushed into something. They didnt mean to hurt anybody. It wasnt a big deal. And i think thats what you hear from trump. And youre going to continue to hear it. Its another wedge issue. Its just another divide. We keep coming up with these things. Should you wear a mask . Should you get vaccinated . How bad do you think January 6th was . It will go On And On And on. The scary thing is, the average republican voter does not believe January 6th was a bad thing. It certainly wasnt an act of terror, but they roll it off. And trump feeds that and other republicans are feeding that. Can i say there was another example over the weekend where you could see how far things have gone since September 11th, 2001. Rudy giuliani does an annual dinner every year with people who were involved with him on September 11th, 2001. Over the years my impression was it was a somber, poignant gathering of people to talk about what was lost and how the city saw itself through that time. Not really anymore. I want to play for you a little bit of giulianis speech. She said, you did a wonderful job on September 11 and, therefore, im making you an honorary Knight Commander of the royal something or other. They both passed away. So, when we talk about a sense of urgency, people are losing their lives and their livelihoods right now because our infrastructure is 100 years old, and Climate Change is here to stay. So its important for Senator Manchin and others to understand, people are dying every day in my district and across the country, and we have to go big right now in this moment. Capitol police are recommending some of their officers being punished for their actions during the January 6th insurrection. More than two dozen others were placed under investigation. Jessica schneider has these details for us. Tell us about these recommendations. Capitol police finally coming out with what they are recommending here. Theyre recommending disciplinary action in six specific cases. The thing is, we dont know the identity of these officers. We also dont know the actions that are leading to these disciplinary recommendations. Capitol police, they put out these range of violations yesterday. Here is what theyre saying about the discipline. Theyre saying there are three cases for conduct unbecoming. One for failure to comply with directives, one for improper remarks, one for improper D Nation of information. And three cases for conduct unbecoming. None of these officers will be char charged with any sort of crime here. Of course, this was an internal inquiry that was eight months in the making. This was all done with the Office Of Professional Responsibility here. We did report a little bit on this back in february, Report D six officers had been suspended without pay. We knew specifics about two of them. Two of them were caught in viral video. One showed an officer taking a selfie with one of these accused rioters. Another one showed an officer in Make America great again hat where he was directing or seemed to be directing rioters around the capitol here. Capitol police are saying as part of this internal Investigation Theyve sent information about this to the department of justice, to the u. S. Attorneys office. No criminal charges are expected here. This is part of the information thats been released as part of the wider investigation into January 6th and all of the other pending court cases. So, Capitol Police are not saying much about the specifics, but they have released this statement, brianna, saying the six sustained cases should not di diminish the heroic efforts of the united states Capitol Police officers. She lost her husband in the attacks. Let me first say i know this has been an emotional weekend. I know this is a difficult time. I want to thank you both for coming in to talk about this based on what we just went through. Let me start with you, tim, here. These documents that were released, the significance of what were seeing now . The significance is finally, after 20 years, what were going to see, i believe, and from what ive been told, is that these documents clearly cover and Show Complicity by the kingdom of Saudi Arabia in those evil attacks. Were certainly grateful for the Executive Order that the president gave us, and were looking forward to more of the documents coming out as the Operation Encore documents as we get into it. In essence, you know, the jig is up concerning Saudi Arabia and their complicity here. Its pretty clear that they are behind these attacks. And this has been covered up for a very long time. The documents dont go as far as to say what you were saying here. What they do suggest is that there are two people, one of whom had consular ties in los angeles, another of whom was tied to los angeles, whose stories werent what they initially said they were in 2001. Exactly. And seem to have much more direct contact, teri, with the hijackers themselves. I want to read you a statement from the saudi government based on this release. This comes from the saudi foreign minister. For over a Decade Weve advocated the release of the documents related to that tragic day and the full confidence that the reveal of any data in those documents will completely show there was no involvement in the K Kingdom of Saudi Arabia in any way. Terri, your reaction . Well, thats just a flatout lie. If they really want everything to be out in the open, they could go to the Court Today and ask for the protective order to be lifted, that they insisted be on this case. And that is why the media has not been able to report on it. That is why we have not been able to even talk to our own lawyers about what goes on in the courtroom and the evidence against the kingdom. I would like to say that the report that just came out is explosive. There is now at least eight saudi Government Officials with extremist views who were Work Ing with Al Qaeda terrorist operatives, planning and plotting, and arranging for the Support Network that was put in place for these first arriving hijackers in california. There is a direct Tie And Link to the saudi government now and the attacks of September 11th. Its indisputable. At least eight. Not just those two. Whats the most important thing you learned from this, terry . The communications that were going on. So, there was this flurry of Phone Calls between these eight individuals, saudi Government Officials, working with Al Qaeda operatives, speaking with them and having a relationship with them, planning and plotting, and putting into place the Support Network. So its undeniable now. Its there. The communication between all of them is there. They no longer will have this cover that the saudi government was giving them. Some of them were here on a student visa, never attending schools. Some of them were working for ghost they were Ghost Employees at the aviation company, never went to work but receiving a paycheck. Their paychecks doubled actually tripled when the hijackers arrived and the worst one is they were given diplomatic credentials by the saudi government. And they were involved in the attacks of September 11th. Tim, talk to me about the decision, which is coming from a biden Executive Order, to begin the release of this. How significant is that . Its tremendously significant. And what it shows now is that the department of justice, as well as the fbi, must start to reveal the real truth and the real documents behind what really should never have been kept secret after all these years. Were actually hoping, too, that potentially we could get criminal charges of murder against several members of the saudi officials that were involved in this.
