Coming up on New Day well speak with medvedev about his big win. New day continues right now. Im Brianna Keilar alongside John Berman on this New Day. New evidence that shows Vaccine Mandates are working as more americans support them at work and school. George w. Bush exasperated with the vision in the united states. He likens January 6th rioters to the 9 11 terrorists. Plus, Donald Trump once again finding himself outside the exclusive president s club. And Justice Amy Coney barrett defending the Supreme Court saying they arent a burj of partisan hacks this has Justice Stephen Briar issues a warning to democrats. Welcome to our viewers here in the united states and around the world, its monday, september 13th. A Growing Number of americans support Vaccine Mandates at work and in schools. This is according to a new poll just out from cnn. More than half of americans, 54 , now say they support requiring vaccinations for returning to the workplace. 55 support it for students attending inperson classes and people attending Sporting Events or concerts. That is an increase notably from april. Meanwhile, there is still a stark division along party lines. 75 of democrats say its acceptable to mandate vaccines for everyday activities. While only 24 of republicans feel the same. The overwhelming majority, 86 of americans also think that the pandemic is not over and nearly two thirds say that economic recovery has not yet begun. President biden just announced a series of new vaccination requirements, including a mandate for testing or vaccinations for any company with more than 100 people. The Surgeon General tells cnn that this will benefit businesses and improve olympic Health But Arkansas Gov Asa Hutchinson argues it could backfire. The problem is im trying to overcome resistance but the president s actions in a mandate hardens the resistance. Here is the thing, they havent backfired for businesses that have already started using them. Cnn chief Business Correspondent Christine romans here with some facts. Hi there, good morning, guys. Its a tricky situation for companies. They need vaccinated employees to get back to normal. At the same time, they need to keep their employees, record 10. 9 million open jobs in the u. S. Right now, but we are learning what works. Some companies are mandating vaccinations. Some are requiring Routine Testing for the unvaccinated. Others are passing the cost of being unvaccinated on to their workers. Thats what Delta Airlines did The End Of August announce 20d 0 a Month Surcharge for Health Insurance for unvaccinated workers. Since then the Vaccination Rate improved nearly 4,000 workers, one fifth of vaccine hesitant workers got the shot, john. Since the pentagon required shot for active Duty Military last months the percentage of vaccinated service members rose. Overall corporate america welcomed the biden Administration Vaccine Push with questions about the details. The group representing Cocacola And Kellogg and Campbell Soup wants immediate clarity on how its members are supposed to enforce all these new rules but the White House giving the green light to what companies have already been doing, americas largest employers encouraging vaccinations, offering days off and bonuses and requiring testing for the unvaccinated. Some 80 Million private sector workers will now have to be vaccinated or face that Routine Testing where vaccinations are truly mandatory, federal employees and federal contractors and Healthcare Workers at facilities that receive Medicare And Medicaid funding. For them it is truly mandatory. Its interesting to see how the numbers have gone up, not giant leaps but statistically significant rises. The likes of which represents or could represents millions and millions of people. Thats true. As the companies started to lead on this and push for these vaccinations the public is following, right . And we know, we know from surveys and we know from all kinds of interviews and Anecdotal Evidence the people at work want to know the people next to them are vaccinated as well. Christine romans, i feel better knowing youre vaccinated. Thank you very much. Now over the weekend former president s clinton, bush, Obama And Biden marked the 20th Anniversary of 9 11 at a number of somber remembrance ceremonies. One notable exception was Donald Trump, who skipped the official events and made a Surprise Visit to several locations including a new York City Police Precinct where he continued to push his baseless claim that the 2020 president ial election was rigged. Trump then provided commentary at a Boxing Match in florida. Joining us now to discuss is kasie Hunt And Coauthor of the book the president s club inside the worlds most exclusive fraternity and time editor at large nancy gibbs also with us. Nancy, its another example here of trump outside of this exclusive president s club. And this is where hes placed himself from the beginning. Really being alienated from the institutional presidency as you can imagine from the day he came down the escalator. But it was especially stark this weekend when you saw the other president s doing the unique and deliberate duties of former president s to unite the country, to call us to our highest values and of all the things he could have chosen to do, to choose to do commentary on a fight was beyond metaphor in capturing the attitude that he has brought to his relationship to the office and to the people who preceded him in it. Look, the truth of the matter is that Donald Trump has run against the president s club in many ways for his entire political career. So this is something that he embraces. However, this was September 11th. Right . This was the 20th Anniversary of September 11th. A time when the country, you could argue, nancy, needs something different. Oh, very much so. And its a fascinating calculation that he makes that the currency of outrage has served him extremely well politically and very few things you can imagine would outrage his critics more than showing disrespect on a day like this that calculation is that it would not also alienate independent voters, republican voters who view this as something of a sacred day in the Countrys History and bringing back in a kind of poignant way how much has changed for people individually and institutionally in those 20 years and to what Extent President Trump bears some responsibility for the kind of division that President Bush was addressing in his remarks in shanksville. Its not unusual, kasie, for trump to kind of grind his ax on sacred ground. We saw that at the very beginning of his presidency, right . When he went to the cia, stood in front of those stars that are hallowed ground and he got political. But this is new york. Hes a new yorker. You know, its stunning but obviously i think were all out of energy to be stunned yet again. I mean, i would take it further back to when he denigrated John Mccains service and time as a p. O. W. , the first thing basically out of his mouth on the Campaign Trail when he first started running for president. And i think when you contrast and think about the difference between what we heard from former President Trump and from former george w. Bush throughout the course of their presidencies, Donald Trump was the first person to actually engage in these divisions and ultimately win as opposed to think about how John Mccain when he was campaigning handled divisive moments like the time when someone stood up and questioned president Obamas Patriotism and mccain said, absolutely not. Thats not whats going on here. I think that the anniversary, the very somber anniversary that i think hit a lot of us harder this year than it had maybe in years past, in many ways it was almost refreshing to have him be shunted to the side, not Center Stage and underscored to us that we are all in this together even though its hard to remember that sometimes. Lets play what george w. Bush said in shanksville. In some ways it was as if he anticipated the divisiveness that the former President Donald Trump was displaying on this day. Listen. And we have seen growing evidence that the dangers to our country can come not only across borders but from violence that gathers within. Theres little cultural overlap between violent extremists abroad and violent extremists at home. But then theres disdain for pluralism in their disregard for human life. In their determination to defile national symbols. They are children of the same foul spirit and it is our continuing duty to confront them. Kasie, children of the same foul spirit is a striking line from george w. Bush, even more striking is the fact that he knows September 11th, this speech in shanksville, this is the biggest Platform George w. Bush will have for the year, for several years. To choose to deliver that line on this day to me was really interesting. It was very striking, especially because the former President Bush has been very careful about choosing the places, spots and ways that he steps back into public life. He was very careful to be respectful of President Obama when obama was in office. And he was not terribly vocal during the Trump Administration necessarily. There were a few moments that he chose to say sort of cryptic things in a way. But he was tried to really rise above it all. But here in this case, its clear he felt that he needed to send a moral message. And it underscores frankly what our Intelligence And Terrorism organizations are telling us here in this country, which is that this is, in fact, now the greatest Terrorist Threat that we face white supremacists domestic terrorism here at home, not attacks from abroad, but it also, i think, lifted people up in an emotional way also. You didnt show the line where he was talking about the people who were on Flight 93 that crashed there where he was giving that speech. Where he said that those terrorists that day discovered that any random group of americans is an extraordinary group of people. And i have to say, i thought back to that obviously so emotional, the messages that were being left, but this idea that everyone on that plane felt like they were in it together. And you juxtapose that against what were experiencing right now in the skies where people are arguing over Mask Mandates and being nasty to Flight Attendants and nobody can seem to get along. And it just made me realize and underscore again for me how important it is to try and find those places where we can connect because in these big moments, like what happened to the people on that plane on September 11th, they were the middle of something like that. And its such a different way of leading, the way that george w. Bush spoke in shanksville than what we experienced over the course of the last the previous four i should say the last four years under the former President Donald Trump. And i also one of the things that stands out here is that that plane, Flight 93, was very likely headed for the capitol or maybe the White House. It seems also more logical that it would be the capitol, that really is the face of american democracy. And so, hes there at this hallowed ground where people came together to stop very likely this attack on the capitol which is where January 6th happened. Hes got a message connecting these two things. I wonder, kasie, i think what it was like to be on the capitol on 9 11 or capitol on January 6th as you were. You were in the capitol complex. Theres this connection between these two places. Well, one thing i will say being in the capitol on the 6th, we did feel a connection to each other, those of us who were in the building. And at the time there were republicans, democrats, both of those chambers were full. And on that day, people came together to try and stop the attack. But what happened in the aftermath was the opposite. We have the congressman who was literally helps members of the Security Forces with guns barricade those people outside the doors, you know, later going on television and saying oh, this was just a normal tourist visit. And i think thats what we really need to focus in on here is that the moments that connect us as humans very quickly disintegrate in the face of misinformation, disinformation, the political division that comes from outSide And elsewhere. For me, as i lived through that both as a journalist covering it but also as a person who was there and whose workplace was attacked, thats been the most difficult piece of all of this. Some of this started around the 9 11 Truther Movement and conspiracies and questions about it and its been accelerated by what we now see online. A lot of us were reading Social Media over the weekend and thinking, thank god we didnt have this on September 11th because god knows how we all would have dealt with it. So, yes. I think the threads are very much tied together from that terrible day on September 11th of 2001 and what happened on January 6th. Kasie, thank you so much for being with us this morning. Nancy, really appreciate it. Justice Amy Coney Barrett responding to critics who say that the Supreme Court has become too political. Youll want to hear her new remarks ahead. Supreme Court Justice Steven brooir is pouring cold water on an idea that progressives have been batting around to add more justices to the highest court in the land. What do you think of the idea of increasing the number of justices on the court . One party can do it, i guess another party can do it. And the more its fairly surface. On the surface it seems to me you start changing all these things around and people will lose trust in the court. Lets discuss this with cnn chief legal analyst and former federal Prosecutor Jeffrey Toobin and Gloria Brown Marshall Tals author of the voting Rights War Naacp and the on going fight for justice. Do you agree with Justice Breyer. Well, of the three branchs the u. S. Supreme court has the highest level of trust among the americans and it is matter of trust. His first book, i believe, also spoke of Alexander Hamilton and his recent book as well and the fact that Alexander Hamilton in this issue of trust is one that goes very deep. And so, i would look at jus it is breyer as someone who is saying he cant make a political move like retiring if its going to be based on the fact that a president wants to put Someone Else in office that would make the Supreme Court look as political as the other two branchs and it would undermine the trusts he believes that has to be there in order for people to accept the Ed Sigss of the court. As they used to say, what army is going to make people actually decide that theyre going to accept the decisions of this u. S. Supreme court . And its about trust. The people dont trust the court, if they think that the justices are there to decide cases based on individuals whose ever is in the White House, then people wont trust the court and it would undermine any decision they make . You agree with that, jeffrey . Just in terms of justices people dont realize the number of justices is not set in the constitution, its set by statute. Theres a law that Congress Tomorrow could change the number of justices on the court. Franklin roosevelt tried to do it when the new deal was being thwarted in the Supreme Court. He lost that effort. And i think historically hes been judged harshly for that effort. I think the most important thing to note about the idea of increasing the number of justices is there is no way there is enough political support in the congress for this now. So its really sort of a moot question. It is indicative of the frustration democrats feel with this now lopsided conservative majority on the Supreme Court, but the real issue is Justice Breyer going to step down, not whether theyre going to increase the number of justices. One is a realistic question, the other is highly theoretical at this point. What did you make, jeff, of him dancing around retiring, this possibility of retiring . Its interesting is that he has softened in the course of these interviews with his in promoting his book. He is coming to acknowledge the universal criticism of him among his allies pretending some how that if he were to leave that would make the Court Look political. I mean, look, the fact is justices have timed their resignations for whether a president is simpatico to them for generations. This is just how it works. Liberals, as much as they love ruth Bader Ginsburg remain frustrated, angry about the fact that she stayed on the court so long and allowed Donald Trump to pick her successor. I think he is coming to recognize that his reputation will be damaged with the people he cares about the most if he stays on the court until Tom Cotton or Donald Trump or another republican is president. Gloria, i want to ask you about something that we heard overnight from Justice Amy Coney barrett who was appointed by Donald Trump. She defended the court. She said, quote, my Goal Today is to convince you that this court is not comprised of a bunch of partisan hacks, judicial philosophies are not the same as political parties. She also talked a little bit about how, you know, she goes with the law. She may not always like the outcome of a decision, but she has to go with the law. Not sort of think about The End point, if you will. What did you make of her comments . Well, justices are human beings. And unfortunately Donald Trump politicized her Vetting Process and of course the republicans in the senate did so as well. She was selected because she was conservative, because she was a fundamentalist. So they are expecting her to take those ideals into those rooms when she is making those decisions and especially when it comes to Social Justice issues. I think its somewhat disingenuous she went along with the politicized process and now she doesnt want to be painted with that brush. As jeffrey pointed out, this has also been partially politicized. No, were not going to expand the court and this commission that biden has put together even that is political to look at Court Packing thats going to come back with this decision in november. So, Amy Coney Barrett is a part of the political process. Shes been painted with that brush as well as the other two justices who are on the court right now who went through that same type of politicized Vetting Process. And its going to be something thats going to taint her the whole time shes on the court. You dont think comments like that help, jeffrey . What do you think . Well, i would draw a slight distinction with what Justice Barrett said. I dont think theyre partisan hacks. I think they are people of integrity. However, i do think that judicial philosophies match up very well with political inclinations. You can tell the difference between justices appointed by democrats and justices appointed by republicans. Especially now on the Supreme Court. Its not a 100 alignment, but its awfully close. And i dont criticize the justices for that. I mean, the fact is interpreting the constitution is a political act. But, to pretend that they are somehow completely divorced from politics as Justice Barrett appeared to be saying, i think that doesnt align with reality. Maybe not political hacks, maybe just political. Right . There you go. There you go. Jeffrey and Gloria Brown marshall, thank you so much both of you for joining us this morning. All right. So that was a Cat Falling from the Upper Deck. So, okay. First of all, its hod to have a Cat Falling from the Upper Deck or the sky during a football game. But then what happened also amazing. A Couple Save the cat, catching it. You can barely make it out in this video. Catching it in an american flag. So those fastacting fans are joining us now. First of all, nice catch . Nice work . Extraordinary. Can you explain what happened . Because ive never seen a Cat Fall from the sky at a football game. Weve never seen it either. Weve seen Cell Phones fall and stuff like that. And to tell you the truth, at that time, that was the first thing that happened was somebodys Cell Phone fell down on to the ramp below us. Security got up and they were looking at the phone to secure it to get it back to the rightful owner. And then they started pointing upward. And at that time, you know, my wife and i we looked up and we could see the tail of a cat, the butt of a cat, that was in between like the fabric and the concrete. So, i think they were trying to save the cat from up above and it was actually driving it further down and they couldnt reach it. So, my wife, she always brings the flag to the football games. Im retired military, so weve weve had a long career in the military and obviously very patriotic. And she secures the flag to the handrail in front of us at each game. So when we saw the cat and it was looking pretty clear that it was going to fall, i didnt think we would be able to catch it with our hands. So i pulled the flag from the handrail, and i held one end while she held the other and there was even a fan or two that was helping to hold the flag as well. Unbelievable, kim. Can you tell us a little look, your skills both of you, thats like catching some kind of fly ball, right . A Fly Cat there. Tell us what happened. I know there were a few minutes where the cat was dangling, you were waiting and tell us what happened from the moment it dropped. Well, the students that were below us were kind of pushing us in One Direction or the other because they couldnt tell exactly if we were over the cat or not. It was really hard to tell. But once the cat fell, it fell on Craigs End of the flag and then kind of rolled down to the area that was below us, which was only about two or three feet. And the students were right there. They picked the cat up and the cat appeared to be okay. Then all of the because we sit right above the student section. So the students were just super excited that the cat was okay. And i think it kind of scared the cat a little bit. But it seemed to be fine. Okay. So where is the cat now . Or do we know . And i have to also ask, i think its impressive the fact that you caught this cat is amazing, but i also understand that some of the people around you, the cat was relieving itself. This cat was not necessarily popular in your section. The cat knew exactly how much trouble it was in. And it urinated pretty much all over everything. And you still caught it . You guys are big, i have to say. You step up in adverse situations. Yeah. It was good to see that the cat was okay, but between the urine and the coke that was spilled on me, i was sticky and stinky. Well, craig it made for an pleasant ride home. Oh my goodness. But look at you now. I mean, its just so wonderful that you took one for the cat and for all of the fans. I just cant imagine honestly, i cant imagine if this had ended a different way, you guys. Its amazing to talk to you, kim and craig chromer. Craig, thank you so much for your service as well. Today House Democrats will unveil specifics on how they plan to pay for their 3. 5 trillion budget plan. They want to hike taxes on wealthy americans and on corporations. Were about to learn what those hikes will look like. Cnns Lauren Fox is live for us on Capitol Hill this morning. What are we waiting for here . Well, look, brianna, we got a little Sneak Peek into how democrats plan to pay for that 3. 5 trillion economic plan. And one thing that we are starting to see is that theyre going to be Targeting Corporations and wealthy individuals, including raising that top corporate Tax Rate to about 26. 5 . Theyre also going to be looking at raising the tax on Capital Gains to 25 for people who make more than 400,000 a year. Also the individual top marginal Tax Rate will go up to 39. 6 . Brianna, this really is important because democrats are going to have to pay for this bill if they are going to be able to pass it through the u. S. Senate where you have moderates like Joe Manchin who are arguing that he is not going to just increase the deficit with this legislation. So, if you want to expand healthcare, if you want to do more on paid family leave, these are the kinds of tough decisions you have to make. But look, the house ways and means Committee Chairman Richard Neal has been keeping this under wraps in part because once you display how youre going to pay for this bill, you have lobbyists, other Special Interests and Folks Downtown coming after you. This is going to be a tight rope for the democrats to walk in the next couple weeks as they try to maintain their unity and it will be a difficult slug ahead. Manchin said they dont want the corporate Tax Rate to go much above 25 , brianna. You put the details out, they start to pick it apart. Thats just what happens. I know the administration really wants to turn the corner on this evacuation from afghanistan, lauren. But today perhaps not the day for that because secretary of state Tony Blinken is going to be facing questions on The Hill about withdrawing from afghanistan. You know, give us a sense of what were expecting here . Well, brianna, sometimes when folks come up to Capitol Hill you have people of the opposite party ready to attack them and people of the same party ready to defend them. I think this will be different today. In the house foreign Affairs Committee Youll see republicans and democrats asking really tough questions about what went wrong in the waning days as the u. S. Was exiting afghanistan. Theyll have tough questions what about is still going to be done to get people who are still in that country out. And i think that those are going to be discussions that are going to happen on both sides of the aisle. Im told that republicans have been preparing for this moment, but democrats were very frustrated with the administration as well just a few weeks ago. So this is not going to just be a partisan food fight, although there may be those moments on the republican side, theyre also going to be democrats who want answers to what went wrong. You have veterans, former Seat Department officials who served on this committee and they will have pointed and tough questions for the secretary of state starting this afternoon, Br Brianna . Well track that this afternoon. Lauren fox, life on The Hill. Thank you. For the first time were hearing how then First Lady Melania Trump responded at first to the January 6th insurrection on Capitol Hill. Joining us now cnn white House Correspondent Kate Bennett and Cnn Anchor chief National Affairs analyst, kasie hunt. Kate, take it away. What have we learned . The thing here, john, were hearing from the First Lady is something we never really do any way. The former First Lady. And it was her idea to do a Photo Shoot of a carpet inside the White House on the day of the insurrection, not funny, i shouldnt laugh. But Stephanie Grisham at the time tried to say as her communications director, as her chief of staff, hey, shouldnt you be saying something . Shouldnt you be condemning whats happening on Capitol Hill and the stunning response was a simple no. This is not something im going to do. This is not a choice im going to make. This is something that doesnt concern me right now. She continued on with her Photo Shoot. I think what were seeing is a former First Lady who was very apathetic to the role. She all but disappeared towards The End of her tenure. She was rarely heard from. She was rarely seen. She was packing up, wrapping up. Meanwhile the country is in turmoil, questions about the election coming from her husband and this was really her feeling. And the one Word Answer of no is so sort of standard melania. Very a woman of very few words and most importantly very few words when words are needed the most. You also reported that she doesnt really have an interest in campaigning again or being First Lady again. And yet also were finding out some new information about where she is on whether Donald Trump actually won the election or not, right . Yeah. This is surprising he didnt but just to be clear. This is interesting always to me when people say, well, she wants to escape and shes tapping s. O. S. On the White House windows and shes trapped. Shes not. And shes not trapped in her marriage. And theyre not two strangers really in the night. She is more aligned with him philosophically, with her ideology than most people think. And so when she does say something that is politically, you know, on par with her husband, people go, oh, thats odd. But its not really. Theyve been together for more than 20 years. Shes watched him have this political aspiration and will watch him again from a distance the next time if he does. But its not unusual. She is aligned with him politically. Well, its clear, too, that she knows the power of sending a message. She used her clothes to send messages. We all saw that. And the idea that there isnt a role for her because i want to underscore what i know you confirmed this reporting and Stephanie Grishams new book, she wasnt necessarily asking her to tweet, oh, my husband didnt win the election. Stand down. They were trying to get her to say, everyone has a right to protest but No One has a right to be violent. It was not a political statement. It was just stand down. Dont be violent. And you know, i spoke to one of the cops who was on the front during the insurrection and the reason they wanted people to do things like this inside the White House is because these insurrections were only listening to the trumps. The cop on the front said, look, man, ive been a republican my whole life. Im a cop. You have to stop. And the insurrections said back to him, im only going to do what trump says. Trump has to say it. Thats why this is so critical in context here. And its such a good point because at times during trumps presidency, she would sometimes say the opposite. And that always made news. She would say thoughts and prayers when he would forget. She would say dont do this or do that or have her own independent thinking and so it wouldnt have been a heavy lift for her to do. She certainly is not behold on the the West Wing in terms of messaging. They rarely checked in the east and West Wing on what she did or what she said. Most of the texts from Stephanie Grisham i should remind people, its not unusual. She could have said something. Shes again, the ask was denounce violence. It wasnt say something political. That was the Tipping Point for grisham to resign and she was the first person in the Trump Administration in the White House of significant stature to submit her resignation that day. On the 6th. We were talking about this earlier, too, brianna, there were so many people in The End who did step down because of what happened on January 6th. But now, of course, weve swung entirely in the other direction and its suddenly unacceptable for so many republicans to denounce what happened that day. Its just absolutely mind boggling. Silence is acquiescence. This was a choice that Melania Trump made. It was a choice to engage or support, i suppose, the Big Lie. And its also not out of place, right . This is someone who despite i think sort of being First Lady, she dabbled in birtherism, too, beforehand. So this is she needs to be held account for the choices that she makes. Well, i for one am really looking forward to Stephanie Grishams book a lot more news in it besides just this. And she triggered a response, there was a Response Today from the First Lady who i think in typical Trump Fashion went after Stephanie Grisham personally, talked about her failed personal relationships. Unbelievable. These are again moments that we have to hit below the belt and for someone to go after someone for a bad breakup. This is her throwing everything at the wall. My sources tell me that Melania Trump was completely blindsided by this book, had no idea that it was in the works, had no idea it was coming. Learned of it when we broke the news last week that it was going to be coming out. That will be something. Kate bennett, casey hunt, thanks to both of you. Thanks, guys. Liberty, liberty, liberty, Liberty House Speaker Nancy Pelosi has invited republicans to join her for a briefing with Capitol Police. A source tell Ing Cnn that concerns center around Saturdays Rally in Washington And Security preparations being made ahead of it. Melanie zanona is live for us on Capitol Hill with the latest. What are we expecting here . Speaker Nancy Pelosis office, briefing is one of several Security Briefings that have taken place in recent days as they gear up for the September 18th rally, being O Orged in support of the jailed rioters. House Administration Committee receive Aid Briefing and Rank And File Capitol Police officers have started to receive briefings in recent days with one of them telling me that that briefing was thorough and transparent, a huge contrast in the runup to January 6th where Intelligence Sharing failures were at least to blame for the lack of preparedness. The department has taken steps since then to improve communications about potential threats and how theyre planning. Here is what we know about it thus far. Preparing for potential violence and unrest. Crowd size could be in the hundreds. Theyre going to be bringing back the temporary fencing around the capitol. Of course, theres the option to call in the national guard. Though its unclear if that will be necessary at this point. Finally, its going to be all hands on deck. As one source described it to me, theyre hoping for the best, preparing for the worst. Brianna . Its interesting, though, because the speaker took on a lot of criticism for republicans for oversight. Or, as they put it, lack of, of law enforcement. They tried to pin January 6th on her. I dont know how well that worked. Now shes inviting them to this briefing. Exactly. They will be in her office today, getting this briefing from the new Capitol Police chief. Everyone on Capitol Hill is taking this very seriously, brianna. Melanie, live from Capitol Hill. Thank you. Thank you. So, there is a tendency in the media to frame everything as a debate. It can give the impression its an equal debate. That somehow theres just as many people on each side. The fact of the matter, though, on some of these issues where you hear some of the loudest shouting, its not equal at all. John avlon with a reality check. Thats right. We hear a lot about how americans are deeply and hopelessly, and even divided on major issues. It paints a picture of a country that cannot find common ground, can lead to civic despair about m mevg americas future. Here is the thing. Its just not true that american s are divided 50 50 on most major issues. Instead, there are sensible americans, supermajorities on critical issues. Take a look at vaccinations, for example. Currently 74 of americans over age 18 have received at least one shot according to the cdc. On the flip Side A fifth of americans, 18 , can be described as vaccine resistant. Of course, the unvaccinated can cause problems for the rest of us, by prolonging the pandemic, but they are a decided minority. Get this, a recent poll found 60 of adults feel both students and teachers should be required to wear face masks while in school. About the only thing more il logical to be antimask and antivax in a pandemic is believing the Big Lie that trump continues to push. In June Monmouth poll found that the election of President Biden was due to fraud. Thats baseless nonsense but does show how baseless information can damage our democracy. Nonetheless it is a decidedly minority position. New Cnn Poll shows the republican party is almost evenly divided on whether trump should be the next nominee, youve got to remember he is the only president in the history of the Gallup Poll never to be above 50 approval, left office 44 , lowest of his lows. Just 27 of americans said they strongly approved of the job he did while in office while 52 , almost double that, strongly disapproved. That 27 is trumps ride or die base. Its a small but vocal minority. Lets shift to washington. This may be a Make Or Break month for infrastructure reform. While the devil is in the details the fact is that its very popular. Fox News Poll found that 62 of americans support the 1. Trillion bipartisan bill that awaits passage in the house. Climate Change Mitigation is a big part of the proposal of the 3. 5 trillion budget. It is worth noting that 64 of americans agree that reducing the effects of Climate Change should be a top national priority. You can even dig into Culture Wars in the past. Take samesex marriage, according to the most recent Gallup Poll 77 of americans believe in equality versus 27 . And given the recent restrictive Texas Abortion Law nearly 60 americans oppose completely overturning roe v. Wade. Hyper Partisan Politics is a structural problem, particularly in congress. For example, the u. S. Senate is literally divided 50 50. The states that democrats represent contain 41 Million people. Likewise redistricting, that happens in State Houses right now, fewer districts by
