Hospitalizations also appear to be Leveling Off, even as the average number of daily deaths continues to climb. Lets talk about the Brand New Poll Numbers showing a Majority Support for vaccine requirements. Cnn senior Data Reporter Harry enton is here. This is part of the Brand New Cnn Poll mostly taken in august before President Biden announced a series of new requirements, but harry, we see a serious growth here in support for vaccine requirements. Oh, and up, up, up, climbing higher and higher as Jackie Wilson once said. Support for vaccination mandates, 55 , Work And Person 54 . Only shopping at Grocery Store 41 has less than Majority Support. The key here is the trend line, 49, 55, 47, 55, 46 to 54. Shopping in Grocery Store up 15 points. Aside from the last one a majority of and growing. Correct. All right. If you ask it another way, though, broadly speaking, the issue of requirements, what do people say . Yeah. Getting back to what Asa Hutchinson was saying, speaking about a partisan divide, this is might be heading some republican leaders push against Vaccine Mandates. We asked it this way, Vaccine Mandates outside the home are acceptable to increase vaccinations. Look at that, 51 . Well within the margin of error. Unacceptable infringement of rights 49 and look at the partisan divide. This kind of looks like a president ial approval rating, if youre democrat or lean democrat, 75 support that these Vaccine Mandates are acceptable to increase vaccinations but look at this 76 among republicans or independents who lean republican unacceptable infringement on rights. I wonder how many of these people are against the Vaccine Mandates for schools that exist in every single state right now . Yeah. They say theyre opposed to it but they all live somewhere where there absolutely are vaccine requirements. Lets talk about partisan views on cdc guidance. Its not partisan views the cdc says, what are people doing . Do you adhere to cdc coronavirus guidance. 49 say always. Now, depending on which way you want to add this up, significant chunk, 38 say sometimes this hard core never is just 13 , but you could argue this is a majority, 51 who say sometimes or never. But most people, most americans are at least sometimes following the guidance. Theyre not always, but at least sometimes following the guidance. In terms of a change, we see increase in support for mandates but we also see an increase i would say trepidation, right . Yes, yes. I would say that thats exactly right. So, look here. Views on the coronavirus pandemic, is the pandemic over . No. 86 say its not. Has the economic recovery not started . Look at that, 64 . Still taking precautions everyday, again, look at that 64 . So theres still a lot of people out there scared who dont believe that this pandemic is over quite yet. I mean, its not over, right . No, no. 86 is actually low given the reality that were seeing everyday. Maybe it should be 100, but still you find 86 americans agree on everything. Where are Vaccination Numbers . College grads 88 , lean Democrat 86 , white 73 , people of color, 72 , noncollege grad 764 . The fact is, a majority of adults in pretty much every single Demographic Group has at least gotten one dose of a vaccine so far. That makes this a pretty successful campaign even if we could be doing better. Very smart one man told me these vaccines are as popular as christmas trees. I think i know that guy. President bush alluded to the January 6th insurrection and warned of the dangers of domestic terrorism. Theres little cultural overlap between violent extremist i abroad and violent extremists at home, but then theres disdain in their disregard for human life, in their determination to defile national symbols. They are children of the same foul spirit and it is our continuing duty to confront them. A Call To Action there. It was a great speech. It was a strong speech. It was a speech that i think the country and republicans needed to hear on the 20th Anniversary of the attacks. The fact that the former president who presided over the beginning of 9 11 and War On Terrorism drew a direct line between the spirit that foreign terrorists and domestic terrorists resemble. The fact that he drew a line from shanksville, the plane was directed to the capitol the January 6th attacks on the capitol is something thats important that republicans need be forced to confront going forward. I have to say the mere choice to do it, george w. Bush knows that this is the biggest platform he gets every year. He went in there with this really wellwritten speech, carefully, precisely written, maggie, children of the same foul spirit. Those are some words for the former president to deliver. John, youre right. And its also striking, as you say, its not that he chose to do this but the biggest platform he knew he would have all year, he has been relatively silent since Donald Trump has come on the scene. This is the most open he has been. He did not invoke the former president s name and specifically mention January 6th but its obvious what he is talking about. Whether it leaves a mark, whether it makes a difference, its not clear. But i do think there are a lot of people who have disliked what they have seen in our political spirit and our political Discourse And Behavior over the last six years who generally have not spoken and who i think realize that the time is now or probably never if theyre going to speak out. And you know, i thought one of the things that really stood out, john, was that, of course, you know this was a plane that many believe we believe it was bound for the capitol or for the white house. Many believe it was bound for the capitol. And it didnt make it. But that, of course, is the scene of the January 6th insurrection. So this kind of line between where he was specifically in shanksville with Flight 93 and the capitol, i mean, what did you think about that . I think thats exactly what made it so resonate is that it was in shanksville, that that was american citizens putting something bigger than themselves on a critical day and a moment of crisis as opposed to this selfcentered leadership we have seen and the target in both cases was the capitol. And i do think thats why its important to maggies point, a lot of republicans try to pretend that george w. Bush didnt give that speech that paragraph is too tough, too truthful, to painful for them to confront politically and thats why they need to be asked about it directly going forward. Because it was so powerful, it was so poignant because it was in that place. You know, so theres new Cnn Polling that shows that 63 of republicans think that Donald Trump should still lead the party. Which is interesting. Do we have the poll theres another part of this poll i think is more revealing which is that like half of republicans think that denial of the Election Results, right, how important is believing trump won 2020 to being a republican, very important 36 , 23 somewhat important. Thats unbelievable, maggie. Well, i guess its not unbelievable. 59 , maggie, say that basically denying the Election Results is the ticket to admission in todays republican party. Look, Donald Trump is the party. And as you know, john, when you have a former president or a nominee for the major party, they are the partys leader. He will be the partys leader. So trying to separate him out from that as to whether he should run again or anything like that is very difficult. So its not surprising that people are believing what he is say mchg it is surprising the fact that he has continued talking about it. He has continued raising it in every interview and some advisers are telling him not to do that and a number of republicans, as you say, have gone along with it. If he continues down this path, hes going to bring a lot of republicans with that. Do we have that audio . The former president did an interview over the weekend where He Stokes these flames. Lets play that if we have it. We won the election by a lot, and they rigged it. And its a terrible thing. I do believe theyre going to decertify this election. But thats the former president who lost an election thinks its going to be decertified. That should not pass by lightly. Right. Look, john, the election is not going to get decertified, first of all. Hospital officials say that staffing short annals have been an issue for years, particularly in the maternity department. This morning, Coronavirus Hospitalizations appear to be Leveling Off somewhat even as the surge in new cases among the unvaccinated continues to overwhelm some facilities. About 78 of all Hospital Beds are in use in Intensive Care units. 80 of icu beds are in use. And in some places hospitals are at capacity and thats forcing them to make some tough decisions around rationing care. Cnn Health Reporter Jacqueline Howard is joining us with more on this story. I mean, this is so alarming. When hospitals are running out of beds, then what happens . How are they deciding who gets care . Yeah, brianna, all hospitals and Health Systems have some plan in place to deal with the surge in patients, but it is heart breaking to see our hospitals in these crisis situations. But i spoke with the american Hospital Association and the Groups Director of policy says, quote, plans can include actions like adding beds, including in nontraditional areas of care in a hospital like a cafeteria or a parking lot. And shifting patients between hospitals and working with their local and State Health departments to find other sites of care. So, those are some examples of plans in place. But brianna, theres also a federal law called the emergency medical Treatment And Labor act. This law requires hospitals with Emergency Departments to provide medical Screening And Emergency departments. And it says that Hospitals Cant refuse to examine or treat people with emergency medical conditions. So, there are plans in place and then there is also the federal law. But theres also another interesting part of this conversation, brianna, because we are in a pandemic, and people have the choice to prevent serious Illness Or Death by getting vaccinated, do vaccines come into play in these conversations all all . Our Colleague Anderson Cooper asked dr. Fauci about this. Here is what dr. Fauci says. Are you asking should you preference it for a vaccinated person versus unvaccinated person, Thats Something that is always widely discussed. But in medicine, i know that you dont prejudice against someone because of their behavior. You just dont do that in medicine. Decisions by the fda have been made and we could have followed them, but in the situation that we were at, it was obvious that action was needed urgently. Decisions need to be made. This weekend the fbi began releasing the first of what is expected to be several documents related to its investigation of the 9 11 attacks and suspected saudi Government Support for the hijackers. This comes after an Executive Order by President Biden that called for the declassification of documents to begin in time for the 20th Anniversary. Here is a look at what the documents show. The fbi releasing a newlydeclassified document with more information about the September 11th terrorist attacks. Its the first of several expected to be released since president Joe Biden ordered a Declassification Review of the investigation earlier this month. The heavily redacted report from 2016 details the Fbis Probe into suspected saudi Government Support for the 9 11 hijackers. This includes whether a Saudi Counselor Official and suspected saudi Intelligence Agent provided logistical support to at least two of the men who hijacked planes on 9 11. According to the document, the fbi interviewed an employee of the Saudi Consulate in Los Angeles in 2015. The person, whose name was redacted, said he was in contact with saudi nationals, suspected of providing support to the first two 9 11 hijackers to arrive in the United States. The saudi government has denied any Government Involvement in the attacks. The fbi released the 16page Document on the 20th Anniversary of the September 11th attacks. Just hours after biden attended Memorial Services in new york city, pennsylvania and at the pentagon. These memorials are really important, but theyre also incredibly difficult for the people who were affected. On september 3rd, the president signed an Executive Order directing the Justice Department and other federal agencies to release declassified documents over the next six months. This move fulfilling one of Bidens Campaign promises and it comes after Pressure And Scrutiny from some families of 9 11 victims. Some even telling the president he would not be welcome at any memorial events unless the documents were declassified. Before the release, former Defense Secretary Leon panetta said he was pleased with Bidens Decision to order the Declassification Review but hes doubtful it will provide the closure that many families are looking for. I think that the families of the victims are entitled to know the whole truth of what was involved and who was involved when it came to 9 11. I suspect that theyre not going to get the kind of satisfactory answers about the role of Saudi Arabia with regards to this attack. Joining us now susan glasser, Staff Writer for the new Yorker And Cnn global affairs analyst. Susan, whats your big take away from this Document Release . I think it provides continued suspicion around the question of what kind of assistance and particular two of the 19 hijackers may have had when they came to the United States. It begins to fill in the picture but here we are 20 years later and its just not definitive. I think thats the most important thing. This is the first document. There will be further ones to be released so there may be additional new information but i was struck by the fact that the fbi was skeptical of some of the information that they had but they couldnt put it together in any kind of definitive way. Its a change from the 9 11 commission and what the 9 11 commission found, right . Some is based on interviews that were done really just a few years ago, 2015, and it does sort of move the needle closer to what some of these families have suspected. Well, i was struck by that, that they definitely there was a live investigation into recently, essentially again it revolves around two of the 19 hijackers and a series of coincidences in terms of saudi nationals they met with in the United States who offered them assistance that the fbi said it was hard to reconcile with just being pure coincidence. Do you meet someone in a 7 11 . I think that was one of the examples. Then theyre providing you help and assistance. So, again, its nothing definitive. But its important to have, i think, a level of transparency as Secretary Panetta was pointing out. And that, if nothing else, it offers a sense that this is the information that the government has, even if it doesnt provide this Ahha Moment of clarity for the family. I know well speak to some Family Members later on. Overnight, something significant happened which is North Korea announced it has successfully fired what it is calling long Range Cruise missiles. Now, all of those words matter here in the lexicon of what North Korea says it does and doesnt do and its development of the Missile System here. Of course this is significant. Why, the first time i believe in six months they have done something like this after a sort of pause at the beginning of the biden administration. Biden and his team obviously have a lot of Foreign Policy crises going on. I dont think they wanted to reelevate North Korea without a dramatic new approach to what to do about it. Unlike Donald Trump, i think they dont want to embark on a ve series of High Stakes negotiations without a clear path forward. What we heard from the Biden Team so far was an early emphasis on restoring the alliances that were really tested by the Trump Approach of unilateral me me me diplomacy. And so youve seen dealing with the japanese and those in the region. When it comes to convincing the vaccine hesitant, our next guest argues that officials have been going about it the wrong way. He writes this stories can be more powerful than data. To persuade people to get them to think you must first get them to feel. Lets tone down the rhetoric and create opportunities whose Purpose Isnt to convince people with contrary opinions that theyre behaving irresponsibly but to invite them into our lives and appreciate why each of us might feel morally injured. The author is with us now, a professor of Emergency Medicine as well at the Albert Medical School at brown university. Sir, thank you so much for being with us. You say, look, this persuasion through all these facts and statistics it really hasnt worked with the vaccine hesitant and you also say that scolding isnt The Way. So explain The Way as you see it. Well, brianna, thank you for having me. Im honored to be here. You know, my experience is commonly shared by many of my colleagues on the front lines which is when we have people who are in the e. R. Who are very sick from covid, and theyre oftentimes asking for vaccines when its a little too late. And whats really curious is you take that particular instance and you say, you know, see, thats an argument why people should get vaccinated. But another way of looking at that experience is saying, wow. These are people who actually will get vaccinated. The question is what is that if . I would get vaccinated if. What is that if . And i feel like right now the discourse is so laden with facts and data and justifiably so, we need facts and data, but unfortunately for many people who arent getting vaccinated, theyre showing their own Vaccine Data that they believe in. So, how do we then connect with Each Other. Thats whats sort of propelled me to write this piece. Okay. So then take us into what that conversation would look like if you are talking to someone who is vaccine hesitant and youre giving them just the facts. Youre giving them the science. And they come back with their own facts, which are not true. And there you are, back where you began. So you said you got to get them to feel. You need to communicate moral injury to them. So what would you say . Well, part of the challenge, brianna, i feel, is that were giving them facts. Were focussing on what we need to say rather than perhaps focussing on what we need to hear. And what i have discovered, at least in the conversations that im having with my patients, is that the things that concern them are often incredibly personal. They have to do with distrust, they have to do with they dont believe the data, theyre worried about their own understanding about vaccines. Theyre destabilized by the entire experience of covid and so i think what we need to do is try to recognize those barriers to understanding rather than hit them with data and actually try to understand what this experience means to their lives because many people, what i have learned especially from readers who emailed me in response to my piece who are not vaccinated, they tell me very different stories and theyre not one story. We Cant Lump up the unvaccinated or vaccine hesitant into one category that really diminishing their experience and how theyre working through this problem. I will just say, and you know that there are because i heard from so many of them, vaccinated people out there listening to our conversation and theyre probably rolling their eyes because theyre out of patience with people. Right. Who arent getting vaccinated. You know, what do you say to them as it sounds like youre saying you need to kind of empathize is the first step with the unvaccinated . Well, yeah. I just want to make one thing clear, i think everyone should be vaccinated. We should get vaccinated. However, my argument and what propelled me to write the piece is the fact that just screaming and yelling just get vaccinated is not, i think, the actual proper way to get people to get vaccinated. And we have to explore why people are not getting vaccinated because i think the problems that were dealing with now, brianna, not only have to deal with vaccinations, i think it has to deal with larger problems in the Healthcare System including lack of trust and the Healthcare System, the fact that a lot of my patients dont have physicians, so they dont have anybody to trust and talk to about these things. Theres multiple of problems and challenges that we have to face and i think the vaccination conflict, debate, crisis is really one final, final result of something that is much deeper. Yeah.
