A newly declassified Fbi Document is sHedding new light on tHe investigation into tHe 9 11 Terror Attacks and suspected saudi Government Support for at least two of tHe hijackers. THe release came on tHe 20th Anniversary of tHe attacks and just a week after president biden issued an Executive Order to declassify tHe reports following pressure from victims of 9 11 victims. Now to our senior national security correspondent. Alex, good to see you again. THere are a lot of redactions in tHe documents. Thats right. THe 9 11 families have told tHe president in a letter essentially dont botHer showing up to tHe Memorials Yesterday unless you do this. Now, this report, this document was released by tHe fbi on Saturday Night following tHe events on tHe anniversary of 9 11. It is Heavily redacted, but it does provide furtHer insight into contact that two of tHe first hijackers, tHe first two hijackers who arrived in tHe u. S. Had with tHe saudi government in tHe form of tHe Sa Saudi Consulate in Los Angeles. This is primarily, tHese 16 incHes that are Heavily redacted are a summary essentially of an interview that tHe fbi had in 2015 with a saudi national who had applied for u. S. Citizenship. He had worked at tHe Saudi Consulate in Los Angeles and really gets into tHe contact that He had significant contact that He had with saudi individuals who had supported tHese two saudi hijackers who arrived in tHe u. S. In tHe year 2000. And one of those individuals that this person who was unnamed in this report really focuses on is purportedly a student in Los Angeles. Although, He is believed to have been a saudi intelligence official. And this document that tHe fbi put out describes his support for tHe two hijackers saying He offered travel assistance, lodging, and financing to tHese two hijackers. It really does detail more of tHe relationship that He had with tHe two hijackers we hadnt Heart in a way before. We did Hear from tHe families of tHe jechb victims saying this does really provide more of a link to tHe saudi government. It does not provide a smoking gun, if you will, between tHe hijackers and tHe higHest levels of tHe saudi government or Royal Family but does provide a stronger link between tHe hijackers and support tHey received from people looking at tHe Saudi Consulate. THe nations largest School District, new York City, prepares to go back to in person learning. For tHe first time since tHe start of tHe pandemic. We have more on tHe preparations. Youre going to take your temperature. Reporter its tHe return to class about 18 months in tHe making. For tHe first time since tHe pandemic interrupted in person teaching, new York Citys roughly 1 Million Public School students are physically returning to tHe classroom. Well be as safe as we can be. SHe and tHe department have been working to reassure both parents and staff that schools are as safe as tHey can be in this Pandemic Era of teaching. No Student Vaccine Mandate in place, tHeyre seeking consent to test were testing our students, 10 of our population every two weeks. And we are also having all that faculty be vaccinated. So i think doing those two things togetHer is going to really continue to build that level of protection around our students not eligible to be vaccinated. THe Testing Part of a multilayer approach. THeyre touting tHe ppe supplies, Cleaning Procedures and ventilation. At least two Hepa filters. And hundreds of District Sites are offering vaccines to eligible students and staff. About 74 of faculty received at least one shot according to porter. THe remainder have until September 27th to get tHeirs. Im tHe greatest Heer-leader'>CHeer Leader to get everyone vaccinated. Its not only about coming back to work and getting kids to school. Thats so important for our community, but this is a moment wHere were talking about tHe public safety of tHe entire community. Reporter as students Head back to class, inspectors Head to tHe streets enforcing new York Citys new proof of Vaccination Requirement for indoor dining, jgyms and entertainment venues. Monday will mark tHe first day all new York City municipal workers are required to be vaccinated or subject tHemselves to weekly covid testing. And it was just this morning that dr. Scott gottlieb, tHe former Head of tHe fda and sits on tHe Pfizer Board says that its possible that children ages 5 to 11 could possibly have access to a vaccine by He-end'>THe End of october. He said that tHeyre in tHe process of submitting data that would eventually lead to that emergency use authorization. Well have to see if tHe promising news turns out to be true. Its on par with what weve Heard with otHer Health officials. Younger americans under tHe age of 12 would likely be able to get vaccinated before He-end'>THe End of tHe year. All right. Everybody is going to be waiting for tHe official word on that one. Thank you so much. Appreciate that. Meanwhile tHe second largest School District in tHe country is taking significant action this week. Mandating vaccinations for all eligible students over tHe age of 12. THe Los Angeles unified public School Board Voting unanimously that all eligible students must have tHeir first shot no later than november 21st. Students must be fully vaccinated by december 19th. And students who play sports or participate in otHer in person extracurricular activities must be fully vaccinated by He-end'>THe End of october. Its important to note that tHere are exemptions for certain students. Students who decline tHe vaccine can participate in an independent student program. A Vaccine Mandate for teacHers and staff is already in place along with mask requirements. Lets talk more about all of this. Joining me to discuss jackie goldberg, a member of tHe Los Angeles school board. So good to see you, miss goldberg. Talk to me. What precipitated this . Can you explain tHe route to get to this point . Sure i can. Thank you very much. We spent a lot of time trying to keep our students safe. We went back to school august 16th. And so we have weekly testing of 100 of our students. We do 100,000 tests a day of our k12 students every day. This has led us to catch a lot of cases very early and to keep tHem safe at home. And to keep otHer students from getting sick or anyone else. But we have all tHese Elementary School children who cannot get vaccinated. And we decided that we had to do everything in our power that we possibly could to keep every child safe. So we decided that we were going to mandate vaccinations for 12 and older. Why . First of all, that protects tHem. And thats tHe most important thing were trying to do is to protect our students. Secondly, however, many of tHem have younger siblings. It begins to provide additional protection for tHeir younger siblings. And thirdly, we have pockets of areas in Los Angeles county which our district serves, that are high still in not having very good vaccinate rates. So were using this as an attempt to bring vaccinations to tHeir parents. Although, of course, we dont mandate those. Well, tHen, im wondering what kind of resistance along tHe way have you received from parents or even students, particularly tHe Pun Ones in tHe category of vaccines being required. Actually, we have a student board member. SHe wholeHeartedly endorsed this at tHe meeting we voted. Her vote was cast in favor of this as well. Our students on tHe whole believe that tHey want to be in school. And tHey believe that if this makes tHem safer in school on tHe whole, tHey want to be tHere. Now, are tHere student who is are resisting . Yes. And if tHey have a valid medical reason, we will, of course, let tHem remain at school, but tHey will be tested frequently. If tHey dont have any reason except that tHey just dont want to, we will offer tHem our independent studies course. We have not received very many calls or letters from students. We have received some from adults, but even in tHeir letters to me, hundreds of tHem, tHey dont identify tHemselves as parents of our students. THey call tHemselves citizens or neighbors or friends or graduates of our district. I do not believe that tHeres a Sincere Deep Seeded opposition to this, though, of course in a district our size, tHere are people who are not in favor of vaccinations. Youre out operating anyone taking to you court . Of course. We get sued by everybody. We get sued by everybody. All big districts do. But i dont think tHeyll win. Im not worried because we looked at tHe Case Law. And tHe Case Law is on our side. Schools have been requiring vaccinations for children for over 100 years. Its why tHeres no more polio. Im old. I remember polio wHen i was in school. I remember us all worried about being near each otHer, about someone going to a swimming pool. I remember polio. I had people that i was in school with who didnt come back to school from tHe hospital. But otHer people older than me remember Measles Outbreaks and diphtHeria killed 100,000 americans in one year. So we know that vaccinations save lives. And we have always vaccinated at school to save lives. This is not new. So do you feel like otHer School Districts will be watching tHe Los Angeles unified district very closely to see what kind of Success Rate you have in this . And wHetHer tHey will likely follow suit . Yeah. I hope so. I hope All Of Us do this. Because you know, weve been open four weeks with 600,000 students, and we have not closed a single school. Not one. And we havent even come close to closing a single school. Why . Because were doing everything we can right now to keep it out of our schools, but tHe best way to keep it out of your schools is to have everyone in your schools vaccinated. Capitol Police Officers could face disciplinary actions for tHeir actions on tHe day of tHe January 6th riot. Suzanne, what more are you learning about this. Reporter according to tHe Capitol Police department in a statement tHey issued this weekend, its six cases of alleged misconduct that started at 38 internal investigations. It was whittled down wHen tHey were able to identify 26 officers. THey say of tHe 26, 20 of tHe cases tHey were found no wrong doing. So it is a very small number of cases Here. THey include, fred, three cases of conduct on becoming of u. S. Capitol police. One failure to comply with directives. One improper remarks and one improper dissemination of information. None of this conduct is deemed criminal by tHe Justice Department or needs any furtHer action. That is according to tHe Capitol Police. You may recall it was in february tHere were 6 officers suspended with pay, and you might wonder what are tHey talking about Here . Well, dozens and dozens of Video Evidence showed during tHe january attack. One officer allegedly taking a selfie with some rioters. AnotHer who put on a trump supporter hat. THese are tHe kinds of things tHeyre looking at Here. NevertHeless, tHe department wants to stress that tHere were 12 00 u. S. Personnel who were tHere. Many of tHem beaten, tasers, and tortured by tHe rioters. THey say in tHe statement tHe six sustained cases should not diminish tHeir Heroic efforts of tHe united states Capitol Police officers. On January 6th, tHe bravery of our officers was inspiring. You might recall tHere were five who died. One suffered from a stroke and died four by suicide after that January 6th attack. A big worry, fred, is whats Coming Up on saturday, september 18th. That is a rally involving sympathizers oh of tHe attackers and rioters who have been charged this. THey will be back at tHe capitol. But house speaker Nancy Pelosi and Senate Majority Leader Chuck Schumer had indicated that tHey will be plowing aHead with this bill. THey are hoping to have tHe House Version written by wednesday and a vote He-house'>In THe House by next week. And senator bernie sanders, tHe chairman of tHe Senate Budget Committee pusHed back on tHe comments from Joe Manchin today. Take a listen. It is not acceptable to me. I dont think its acceptable to tHe president , to tHe american people or tHe overwHelming majority of tHe people in tHe democratic caucus. Look, we work with Senator Manchin to pass tHe 1. 9 trillion american rescue plan. I believe we can sit down and work togetHer and come up with a 3. 5 trillion reconciliation bill. Now, tHe president for his part has said He believes Joe Manchin will be on board with this at He-end'>THe End. Well see if tHere are any furtHer negotiations to try to bring him to tHe table over tHe course of tHe next two weeks. For tHe president s part, Hes traveling to denver, colorado on tuesday wHere He will promote more of tHe economic sweeping agenda Hes trying to get past in capitol hill. THe White House has really been speaking with tHe sense of urgency that tHe time is now for this passage. For tHe bill to be passed. For tHe middle class to be impacted by it. But tHe White House is also keenly aware that so much of tHe president s domestic, economic agenda hangs on tHe way things play out over tHe course of tHe next few weeks and tHeres no room for error really as this bill proceeds on capitol hill. Biden said this week that i think we can work something out. Talking about his relations with manchin. Does it seem to you that tHe president is demonstrating that He is now in a place wHere Hes taking a tougHer stance wHetHer it be in afghanistan, covid Vaccination Requirements for employees. Is it style going to Help his agenda succeed . In certain areas it will. I think with vaccines it was very important for him to shift to a more proactive Position F. With Senator Manchin, its unclear. Im not sure tHey can do it without grass Roots Pressure in West Virginia and have this work. I think tHe administration is probably more concerned than tHeyre letting on. On tHe issue of tHe vaccines, you wrote an Op Ed for cnn. Com roughly two months ago urging tHe president to impose Vaccine Mandates. Well, now He finally did. Is this soon enough in your view . Well, it should have been sooner. And i think we as a nation are paying tHe cost of Vaccine Resistance as were still dealing with tHe Delta Variant and hospitals overloaded and schools are still in a somewhat perilous state, and so it would have been better months ago, but its never too late, and i think tHe administration is now waking up to tHe fact tHere is an unpersuadable portion of tHe population, and thats what drove this shift in decision. I dont think biden really had a choice if He wants to try to normalize tHe country. And Hes been tHe message has been conveyed to him. THe fight that remains against his recent decisions. Republican governors, in fact, in several states are threatening to see biden because of tHe mandates. But listen to what biden said about that this week. Have at it. Look, i am so disappointed that particularly some of tHe republican governors had been so cavalier with tHe Health of tHese kids. So cavalier with tHe Health of tHeir communities. This is were playing for real Here. This isnt a game. So what does that posture tell you about his confidence right now . Well, i think Hes ready for tHe legal challenges. THeres a lot of precedent for requiring vaccines at tHe state and local level. Weve done it for a long time. Weve done it in tHe military. And through tHe interstate commerce clause, i think tHe administrations pretty confidence that tHey could withstand tHe challenge. And politically tHeyre betting on tHe fact that tHere are more american who is Want Covid to end or be significantly contained than tHere are those who oppose tHe requirement of vaccines to enter and work in certain places. And given tHe polls, thats a pretty Safe Bet right now. We are on tHe 20th Anniversary this weekend of 9 11. 9 11 happened early in george w. Bushs presidency. Listen to what He said in Shanksville Yesterday on tHe anniversary of that event. And we have seen growing evidence that tHe dangers to our country can come not only across borders but from violence that gatHers within. THere is little cultural overlap between violent extremists abroad and violent extremists at home. But in tHeir disdainful and disregard for human life, in tHeir determination to defile national symbols. THey are children of tHe same foul spirit, and it is our continuing duty to confront tHem. Giving a reality cHeck. I mean, shouldnt it be tHe case that at 20year mark we should be talking about tHe evolution and tHe strengtHening of a democracy, and instead, He was underscoring that we as a nation have devolved. We should be talking about that. And in many ways weve moved in tHe wrong direction, and white domestic extremism is a major threat. Weve seen it play out on January 6th and many otHer instances. Its important to have a prominent republican and tHe president who is in charge during 9 11 now speak out against one of tHe biggest threats we faced. THe question is how many otHer republicans will join him . How many otHer republicans will say yes, this needs to be a national Security Priority in 2021 . And i dont know tHe answer to that. Gordon, we spoke about a week ago. It was pretty miserable. Is it better today . Yes. We have about 80 of our water restored. Our Running Water restored in our parish, and we have after today we should be about 40 of our utilities. THe bayou region, tHe lower, lower region areas of our parish was tHe hardest hit. And that will still be two or three weeks more before we can get power back down tHere. So what are people doing of those who still dont have power, tHey dont have clean water, how are tHey managing . What can otHers do to Help . Well, weve got quite a few pods, points of distribution, and we have volunteers and tHe national guard and to tHe we have throughout tHe parish, distributing food, water, baby food, diapers, meals. THeres a lot of cooking teams down tHere. And a lot of like i said, tHe nortHern region, central to nortHern, a lot of that power has been restored, and youve got some restaurants open and some Gas Stations and convenience stores open and supermarkets open you know, from tHe nortHern part of tHe parish. THe soutHern part of tHe parish is still under Heavy construction and trying to get tHe Power Lines back on. What are your biggest worries about those who are still doing without wHetHer its power, access to sufficient necessities . How much longer can tHey handle this . Well, weve been meeting with fema, with tHe temporary housing and asking fema if tHey Cant Step it up and try to get some housing for tHe people who did lose tHeir homes or tHeir homes, you know, are in disrepair, and so if fema is listening to this, i wish tHey would try to move us as quickly as possible, because our biggest hurdle right now is housing. Shortterm, and tHen, of course, longterm housing for people to rebuild tHe houses that were destroyed. Yeah. Meaning i mean, meaning you want to see some trailers come in . I mean, what is tHe answer to some temporary housing . How do people wHen so much of it is uninhabitable right now, in what form should tHe federal Government Or State be bringing in Housing Availability . Well, ive been in contact with governor John Bell edwards staying on top of everything, and you know, were looking at two alternatives. One is Marine Housing, because tHeres a lot of marine vessels and a lot of waterways throughout tHe parish we could bring in housing. And tHere are a lot of Marine Housing available on tHese marine vessels. AnotHer one is, of course, affordable buildings and portable residential homes, and, of course, tHey always have tHe trailers also.
