Well, its been a challenging summer already because of our Nurse Staffing shortages and then just about three weeks ago we had a huge spike in the Delta Variant come through our community. And we were averaging about five covid positive patients in our hospital of 92 medical beds a day. And in about 3 to 4 days we went up to 51 covid positive patients in our hospital admitted with our icu completely full, 15 beds all on ventilators and we ran out of ventilators. We had to borrow four from a neighboring hospital. And in two days those were being used and its just been a real strain on the whole system. Like you had mentioned, we had to shut down the energies, open up our Post Anesthesia Recovery unit in order to make a second icu for more beds and we ex expanded up to 110 bed capacity, but everybody is stretched real thin. Were using all the resources we can just to try to take the best care of patients and its getting very challenging. I know that things have levelled off a little bit since this spike that you just had at the end of august. But that youre concerned that moving into the School Year here its going to generate more cases. You know, as we talk about this i think this is whats very scary for people but its the reality. If things get bad enough, doctors, hospitals have to start making choices. You know, what does that look like if you get to that point . Well, we definitely had moments during that big surge about a week ago where we were sitting around the table in the administrative office talking about what are we going to do . We were really at the limit . We were scrambling to decide are we going to have to start deciding who gets care, not care, Move Patients to other parts of the state or other nearby states. And so we did sit and talk some about the protocol and how that works. There are plans in place to try to make the best decisions with ethical discernments and it just breaks your heart to have to have those conversations, especially when you know that the majority of these people, 90 of the sick people coming in are not vaccinated and there is a treatment out there with vaccine that will lessen the severity of the surge to our whole community. Yeah. Look, these are its unnecessary, right . Over time i wonder have you seen a different have you seen a different profile when it comes to the patients that you have coming in . Well, yeah. I think in the first wave of covid it was we didnt have a vaccine, Healthcare Workers finally got vaccinated. That helped with our security and taking care of patients. And it was pretty much all comers. But in this last Delta Surge at the end of the summer, its pretty much all unvaccinated people. And some of them are in denial that they have the illness. Some of them are angry that we suggest certain treatments or we suggest they get vaccinated they get better. It has a different feel to it we have Family Members that get quite angry. We have to limit visitors and just a lot of rage and not really what we went into medicine for. We think we would have more respect and understanding. Theres just a lot of anger out there right now and i can understand its pretty stressful, but once again if they would listen to the science and get vaccinated, a lot of this would not be a problem. And they come over and they just hold up their signs and for me, i was just fed up. And i was filled with anger. And i just decided to give them the finger because i thought it was the best thing i could do. So when you drive past them, to get into your school, what are the signs say and how does it make you feel . They say like stuff like masks arent the cure, i cant remember the rest. But it makes me really angry. I dont know, it makes everyone else angry. And were all just annoyed with it. You know, for you, what do you want in terms of being at school . I want everyone just to be safe. And its hard because i was on hybrid learning for so long, its very stressful and very hard. But, i hope that we can say in school. You delivered a clear message to them. Do you think they saw the message you delivered . No because they came to school yesterday. But i hope that things will change. So, megan, you got a text from fiona basically saying, um what did the text say . Yeah. She said, mom, i flipped off the antimaskers and they flipped me off back. And you know, honestly i understood her frustration and her anger. Its been 18 months of this pandemic, which has been hard on all of us in different ways but especially i think on adolescents. And we all just want to get back to normal. And were not going to be able to do that unless we can put Public Health first. Its an odd parenting moment, right . When your child tells you, hey, i think i might have been photographed flipping the bird to a bunch of protesters here, you know, what was your reaction . Yeah. Well, we should add that fiona had no idea there were cameras there and i had no idea either. So we did not know this was in the news until the next day or that it was even captured until the next day. But, my initial reaction was, they think theyre protecting you. And then she went to class and the day was really uneventful until the next morning when it started to go viral. Do you have any issue with fionas chosen means of expression . You know, what else was she supposed to do in that moment . She was pretty fed up. You know, this is not a situation where she could engage in constructive dialogue. You know, shes forced to ride the Bus Everyday to school and see these people. She was done. She expressed herself. So im proud of my daughter and im fine with that. Im just smiling because its one of those challenging parenting moments when you know youre supposed to say thats not something youre supposed to do but youre whispering to yourself, right on. You got to be careful with that. So fiona, where does this go from here, do you think, in the coming days . Are these people youre in vermont i should note. They cant be out there all winter. Its going to get cold. I have no idea. I have hope that the school can do something about it. I mean, theyre right outside of school property, so theres nothing that i can really do just besides spreading the message to everyone else to wear their masks. Well, you spread a message. And i think they saw it and a lot of people are seeing it and i understand your frustration because it is a minority, this vocal minority aggressive protesting masks and sometimes you have to deliver a message back. Good morning to our viewers here in the united states and all around the world. It is wednesday, september 8th. A big surge in covid cases among children in the u. S. Just as children are returning to school. The academy of pediatrics reports that more than 250,000 new cases involving children in the last week that there had been 250,000 cases in the last week, thats a 20 increase from the week before, and a 250 increase from five weeks ago. Nearly 27 of all new weekly cases are children. You can see the number of children hospitalized does continue to climb with nearly 2400 kids in the hospital this morning. We should note thats still a small percentage of those hospitalized. Theyre now a quarter of new cases, but about 2. 5 of hospitalizations. And while hospitalizations nationwide do appear to be leveling off, ignoring the science clearly is coming with a deadly price.
