Reporter he put to rest allegations coming from republican congressmen and others that the taliban were involved in some kind of Semi Hostage taking their Words Situation with reference to a group of americans and others who were stranded in mazarisharif unable to fly out on a number of aircraft chartered for that purpose. But this is what he said. Weve been assured again that all american citizens and afghan citizens with valid Travel Documents will be allowed to leave and we intend to hold the taliban to that. They have upheld that k34committ in one instance in the last 24 hours with a family that was able to leave in an Overland Route and we are not aware of anyone being held on an aircraft or hostagelike situation in mazarisharif. Reporter on the question of the four people who have gone out over land, we understand from the State Department who are not releasing which route they took, but waiting 1 hours at the border before being allowed to cross and this messaging is being held close in case they have to use it in the future. But once they were able to clear through the taliban lines, they were able to Get out safely and were in constant communication with State Department officials throughout their journey. That was a woman and three children who were able to Get out. So a positive sign that the taliban are perhaps making good on at least on their promise to allow those with american passports and even green cards to cross out of the country. It hasnt really been put to the test for other afghan citizens because in the past they had been quite aggressive in saying that they didnt want afghans to leave. This is the taliban position at the moment, they dont want afghans to leave but they are also saying that those Awith Th right paperwork can go. But of course the main Kabul Airport is closed, they have difficulties there in terms of security and other methodologies for Processing Passengers who want to leave the afghan capital. And that woman and three children presumably her children but i dont know for sure, they were american . Reporter they were american citizens, yes. And i guess it shows that there are still americans trying to Get out of the country. Did the Secretary Of State give any kind of indication of how closely the u. S. Is coordinating with the taliban here to try to allow people out at some point . Reporter yeah, he indicated that in the previous few hours they had been in communication with the taliban directly and qatar has also been working on that much more broadly for other nationals of other nations, not just americans, to Get out too and indeed potentially vulnerable afghans. But the Secretary Of State said that there were around 100 americans that wanted to Get out, a relatively small number in mazarisharif, a lot mixed up with nonamericans and people without the valid Travel Documents. And he sort of intimated that really it was a problem at state some of that delay because without people on the ground, these People Cant be screened and processed properly before they are being put on aircraft. Number one of course on Everyones Mind is covid as you mentioned. My concern right now is that as we take all of these precautions to try to send kids back safely, were for Getting about so many other things that kids need to be able to learn in person. Like what . Like glass, like dental checkups, refilling medications, setting up a sleep schedule. Unfortunately so many kids have been staying up late and we need to set back those schedules, make sure that weve had all the checkups, were up to dit on vaccines. It is the whole child were taking care of. And so with so much about safety and keeping up on other medical needs like Eye Glasses and the like, we need to really zero in on where they might be failing. And i feel so badly as a pediatrician putting this on parents. Were asking them to do so much and it is so unfair and we shouldnt be here. But, yes, now is the time. This School Year we have to be more involved than ever as adults. Unfortunately kids will come in behind. We have to make sure that they are catching up and we have to know how to work with the teacher, how are the kids evaluated, what do we come when kids are falling behind. And so what are you telling parents and children about wearing of the masks . Some of these kids are little. Is there a trick, some advice i know one of my sons is excited to wear a mask because he is Getting braces so no one will know that he has braces. Trying to look for the up side i guess. But how do you Get them comfortable with the mask wearing . I think adults are more stuck on this than kids are. You look at some of these parents at the meetings with the School Boards and parents are just losing it over this. And kids are embarrassed in so many cases to see their parents acting like that. So i think try to normalize it, try to set the example. Lets not judge each other for wearing masks. You dont know what a parent might be modeling for the child. And so kids are not born knowing how to put pants and tshirt on. We teach them. And so we can do that the same way with masks. Johns hopkins data shows that covid cases are up 300 compared to Labor Day last year. And that is scary. Last year in my School District we werent sending the kids Back To School. Now we are. Are you concerned about kids spreading covid in school and are you concerned about the hospital systems in some cases so overwhelmed with unvaccinated people that the routine things you need for your kid you might be wait something. Im very concerned. And im concerned not just about covid but were about to hit Flu Season as well. Last year we skipped it because everyone was home. This year i dont think we will. I dont know that for a fact of course, but im concerned that well have two pandemics if we dont take it seriously and if we dont vaccinate everyone who qualifies for both covid19 and the flu. And all of these other things that we have been doing to try to Get kids back safely wont even matter if we have all of the spread and if we dont control it. So, yes, very concerned. And we heard dr. Anthony fauci say the best way to protect children is for all the adults around them to be vaccinated. I assume you agree. That is exactly right. I 100 agree. And if you look at the data, states that have the lowest Vaccination Rates are also The States where the kids are Getting hospitalized at the highest rates and the kids not vaccinated are ten times, teens not vaccinated, are ten times as likely to Get hospitalized than a child who had been. And why is it that so many people can go cuss on the exception is and not the rule . We know that the hospitals are full of unvaccinated people. Cus exception is and not the rule .
