Hello, everyone. Im alisyn camerota. Welcome on this holiday. Americas doctors and nurses are short staffed, working overtime and begging for help. About 80 of icu beds across the country are full right now, a third of them with covid patients. Its gotten so bad in kentucky, the governor is sending in the national guard. Our situation is dire. We are setting case records. We have a Record Number of kentuckians in the hospital, in the icu battling for their lives. We have a Record Number of families praying for their Loved Ones on a ventilator, needing that assistance to breathe. New cases are spiking. The sevenday average is 300 higher than it was last Labor Day. This as the White House planned to roll out Booster Shots that maybe by changing. Lets bring in elizabeth cohen. So, elizabeth, what is the update on boosters . This Roll Outmay Start on september 20th, for many americans, but not necessarily for everyone. Before i go into details, i want to give the bottom line, which is if youve been vaccinated more than five, six, seven, eight months ago, theres an excellent chance you will soon be offered a booster. It will likely be in the weeks to come. So at the end of the day, you will be offered a booster, most likely. So lets take a look at some of these particulars. Dr. Anthony fauci saying that pfizer looks like theyre ready to go for boosters. They smithed their data to the fda. The fda advisers are meeting on september 17th. Moderna might be behind by a Week Oar two, so if you got moderna, you may not be able to get the booster as soon as pfizer, but they could update it in a few weeks. They will be looking at mixing and matching. If, you got moderna, could you get a Pfizer Booster or Vice Versa . Theyll be looking at data to give more flexibility. Alisyn . I keep hearing about this research out of israel and how u. S. Officials are paying close attention. What is it and what are they finding . Thats right. Dr. Fauci and others have talked about whats going on in israel. Israel is a pfizeronly country, essentially. So they have accumulated a lot of data. Lets listen to dr. Fauci. What were observing now not only here in the united states, but in other countries, including israel and the uk, that the durability of the protection tends to wane, particularly in the context of the Delta Variant. The good news, as i mentioned a moment ago, is that the boosters really jack up the response very, very high. We hope that that response would be durable. So israel started its Booster Program on july 30th. You dont have to be any particular age, anyone can get it, as long as you are five months or more past your second vaccination. What israel found, is those who had been vaccinated in january had more than twice of risk of breakthrough infection. They found that the booster, that third shot, reduces the odds of intex 70 to 84 , and in People Age 60 and over, the booster decreased the relative risk of seen San Diego by more than tenfold. So that meeting on september 17th, that the pfizer folks will be presenting this israel data to those fda advisers. Alisyn . Elizabeth cohen, thank you. So the Cdc Director Rochele walensky had a clear message for all of us. If youre unvaccinated, do not travel. If you are vaccinated, consider the risks. So are people listening . Pete muntean is at reagan international. What are you seeing there . Reporter a lot of people are still traveling, but not as much as the airlines had hoped. The tsa said numbers are averaging about 85 from what they were in 2019, but it could be a while one of we see this. Cancellations are going up, bookings are going down. And theyre pinning the blame on the Delta Variant. I asked united Airlines Ceo Scott kirby about this, and he says that, as vaccinations go up, numbers should get back to normal. By the time we get through this wave, well have a much higher percentage of the country vaccinated, so i would anticipate the holidays normal, and by the time we get to january, the fans that have been moved to then will probably happen, and that the country will be back on a path towards towards normality. Reporter the tsa tells us its unlikely numbers for today will set a report. Typically its the last day of a long Holiday Weekend where numbers are especially high. Travel experts said this is about the time of year when numbers slump off a bit, but theyre saying no doubt that the Delta Variant is having an impact here. Pete muntean, thank you. As most schools reopening for fall semester, some will not see a School Nurse on site. The u. S. Is seeing a shortage of School Nurses. Now some democratic lawmakers are pushing for legislation to help schools hire more nurses. Cnn Health Reporter Jacqueline Howard joins us now. What is their plan . Reporter lawmakers are pushing for legislation to direct fell funding to hell keep high more nurses, but as you mention, this has been a ongoing problem. Years ago the academy of pediatrics recommended that their physicians afblgt for will School Nurse in every School T based on data from the year 2018, we can estimate about 39 of schools employ fulltime nurses. About 35 employ parttime nurses, but theres still this 25 , alisyn, of schools that have no nurse at all. So what were seeing now, as Nevada Congresswoman Dina titus, and Montana Senator John tester, have introduced legislation called the Nurse Act. In a letter, Congresswoman Titus writes, quote, the Nurse Act would provide federal funding through Department Of Education grants to hire School Nurses. The first investment of its kind. Thats what we are seeing. The congresswoman is urging for this bill to be included in the upcoming budget. Well see what happens with that. For now, alisyn, School Nurses that i have talked to say they hope the pandemic really sheds light, raises awareness, and opens the publics eyes to the important of having a School Nurse, especially during a Health Crisis like the pandemic. Alisyn . This is a bad time not to have a School Nurse. Exactly. Jacqueline, thank you. More children are Testing Positive for the virus. The cdc said cases increased nearly tenfold in those 17 and younger from late june to mid august. Average hospitalizations for kids with covery jumped earlier this year, and continue to remain high. Doctors are prepare for a busy flu season, and already seeing an early wave. So joining us is dr. Suzanna hills, a pediatric airway surgeon, and author of a recent Oped Warning of complications in covid cases shes personally seeing in children. Thank you so much for being here. We just showed that graph of the number of cases in kids, can you see how exponentially its going up. What are you seeing on the ground . Ive seen the whole spectrum. Im an airway specialist, so i see some asymptomatic children. I see children come back months after having covid with symptoms. Im called on to take care of the kids in the icu. Obviously when this all best gan, we didnt think kids would be sick never. Right. So the kids, how many are you seeing . And are these kids with underlying conditions or previously healthy kids . We know, and in my personal experience, its been the case that kids ive seen is comorbid conditions, but also kids without end up in the hospital, and some kids end up with covid and rsv, unfortunately in new york, schools are not open yet, so were not seeing the same surge as in other states where schools have reopened and may not have the Mask Measures in place. Im really concerned for what we might see in the coming weeks as schools reopen here in new york. I want to ask you, The General Conventional Wisdom was kids need to be in school for a host of reasons. As, what youre seeing, as an airway specialist, having to deal with kids, do you think its time for millions of kids they cant be vaccinated. Obviously, through no choice of their own, they are not eligible yet. Is now the time to send millions of kids Back To School . The thing i want people to know, remember, this virus is preventable. We do have some control over how this pans out, even if kids are in school. We all understand how important schooling is for kids. They do need to be back in that setting, to catch up, to get the development they need. Things likes masking, vaccinating everyone who is eligible, hand washing, keeping kids a little separated. These things we know from last year as well, plenty from north carolina, wisconsin, and the Cdc Study from georgia, that shows these measures will keep kids safe. I think we can send kids Back To School. What were seeing in schools to that are reopening, were seeing kids ending up in quarantine, and we have some control over that. If your child gets covid, or gets a positive test result, what should parents do . Is there anything you should treat them with . Generally speaking, supportive measures are what we recommend. If your kid has any symptoms, please get them tested. The family will know and the school can know, yes, there was an exposure. That child should be isolated at home getting well for two weeks, and then testing again, so they can test negative for the virus. Supportive measures are what we recommend. What are those . Hydration, and rest. And washing of everybody around this child, trying to keep the child separated from other people in the household. All of those things will help keep the virus isolated and help keep it contained. We want to contain kids who are positive, and try to let them recover and get well, with just supportive treatment, with basic measures at home. Kids struggling to breathe, if it seems like they have labored breathing, if youre worried about how theyre doing, spiking high fevers, talk to your pediatrician, and of course were here in hospitals for emergencies, but we recommend you reached out to your pediatrician first. Very quickly, i remember when my twins were little, they got rsv, and how scary that was i understand there might be a spike in rsv, are you seeing that . Yes, early this year, all across the country, especially in yearsy covid cases are high, hospitals are being stretched thin. I dread this disease every year, because these are some of the kids that are the sickest, and can require all kinds of assistance. So its really a challenge and its hurting a lot of Hospital Systems to have the Rsv Spike alongside this Covid Spike thats happening now. My takeaways are hand washing, and make sure all the results are vaccinated. Yes. Doctor, thank you. We appreciate you coming in. Thank you. Out of power and under extreme heat. People should be enjoying time with family and friends, but instead theyre here. Im inside one of the eight Cooling Centers, and here they provide free meals, ware, ac, charging stations, diapers and other resource that are needed across the state of louisiana. 13 people have died result of hurricanes ida. Four from cashin monoxide, and there was at least one heatrelated death. They dont want to see any deaths at all, but especially the ones that are preventable. Talk to me about what you guys have going on, and the big need right now. Were running eight cooling stations. We knew once the power went out, and persons didnt have power, we needed to move fast. You can come in, receive water, get out of the heat and come in and be safe. Reporter so far they have service at all of those eight stations. Thank you for your time. At least 14,000 folks across the city. 2500 were yesterday. On top of dealing with the cleanup and trying to find a key, its get something it didnt need, at least more rain, two to three instances. You can imagine how different that is, the rain might cool things off but that heat, with the heat index, it feels on some days like 107 degrees. This Cooling Center is a place of relief. Alisyn . Adrienne broaddus, thank you. Parish leaders also say ida destroyed 25 of their buildings. On phone with us now is the lafourche what does that even look like in la fourche. Alisyn, thank you for having us. Every interview i tried to talk about this is not a new orleans storm. Im glad they have cooling stations. I have 14,000 people who dont have homes like now. We are working feverishly with our partner at entergy. Like our Water Plans plants, so we lost our entire Water System during the storm. And Vip Water a week after the storm we are working foreverishly as we can to rebuild our community. The herculean task you have ahead of us is inconceivable. Where are your people and what do they do without Shelter And Power until the end of the month . You would never find a more resilient people. Some are staying with family or friends, some have brought in rvs. We had about 90 people we had to move to a Neighboring Parish, but were doing everything we can. We have fine Ma Assets on the ground. We have corps of engineers, and have people go back under their homes. We are working with the their hops are destroyed. There is no chance of to get them set up in hotels. What about that. The 25 of building their fully destroyed, what I Cant even understand what that means for the future of the folks who live there. They go to hotels, i guess transitionally, but when can they have a home against . We will begin the rebuilding as soon as we can. We are very resilient. Were talking to fema to see if the trailers are available. But we have a whole lot of assets, our state and federal delegation have been great partners along with the Governors Office here. The president was right here to meet with me and Neighboring Parish president s, and he committed every resource he can from fema. Obviously i hear you hoe resilient your folks are, but its so taxing a everybody, on everybody physically and emotionally. I also want to ask about what happened at that warehouse facility, where there were Nursing Homes in various parishes, including yours, that had to evacuate people. They sent people to a Warehouse Facilities and seven people ended up dying there. Can you give us an update from there . That, alisyn is a completely tragic event that simply never had to happen. They all have emergency plans. When we call mandatory evacuations, and they know they have to leave, they have a safe place. In that case, that did not happen. And i along with the Go Everyonor and more, that we are appalled that any residents had to live in those conditions. I know the seven facilities have had their licenses pulled, and theres an investigation by the Department Of Health into the longterm effects of why it happened and whats going to happen to the Nursing Homes in the future. We are thinking of you. Thank you for the update and obviously we will check back where you. Thank you, alisyn. Millions of americans are losing their unemployment benefits. I think the 300 didnt have as much of an impact ago everyone said it did. Well see as we move forward. Those states that ended enhanced benefits did not see any gains at all of people going back to work. Alisyn kosik joins me again. A very big day. This is impacting 11 Million americans, 8 Million will loose all their benefits, but the reality is this wasnt intended to last forever. It did what it was intended to do. It was intended to prop up h households and economy. And were going through this great uncertainly about their economic futures. Today has come, nowents the Benefits Defact that millions of americans struggle. Will we see a flood of americans rush back into the Labor Force and start working for work . The answer is not cut and cry. It was pretty political and controversial. Critics were saying we dont think people are going back to work because of the free money, but data showed different. They showed that states that kept their benefits and states that cut their benefits didnt really have any difference in job growth. This maybe sheds the like on what is happening is many People Cant just jump back into the jobs that they had before the pandemic. For one, their jobs may not exist. Maybe they moved away. They may be retraining, trying to get a higherpaying job. They may be having childcare issues. Thats what were seeing for women and why women continue to the sidelines. Theres the health reasons. Three new wildfires in california, as the huge Caldor Fire finally starts to slow. One of the new fires started Sunday Afternoon near auburn. It grew to about 250 acres by dusk. The Caldor Fire has consumed or than 216,000 acres, now 44 contained, and some Evacuation Orders are being eased. But from catastrophic fires to footing, to Hurricane Ida, all part of a Climate Crisis thats prompt the over 230 leading medical journals to issue a statement. The editors of the journals warn, quote, rises above 1. 5 celsius reaching the chance of reaching Tipping Points in natural systems that could lock the world for an acutely unstable state. We call for action. That call for governments to act is being echoed in a new Cnn Contributor Piece from john sutter. He says, stop blaming yourself for the climbed crisis. Sutter warns, quote, the narrative must shift from one of individual responsibility, to one of the governmental and corporate accountability. John sutter joins me now. Thanks so much for being here. I read your oped with such interesting, and strangely freeing, to be honest. Ive been recycling and composting my heart out. I have bought an electric car. My family and i have cut out virtually all red meat, and yet these Climate Catastrophes Keeping happen. So, your point is we can do as much as we can individually. But thats not really the root of the problem they do connect is to this crisis. To blame individual people, to make us feel guilty for our choices when the truth is that there are, like, Big Global System that underlie and produce the Climate Crisis. Its not unless i have a lot of money to afford to buy a bunch of Solar Panels to put on my house, i may not have a lot of Agency Or Choice in where my electricity comes from, right . Its sort of international Skate Policy Decisions that need to be made to sort of shove the world off and reach, you know, Carbon Kneutrality to make the world safer. I think theres been a concerted effort by Fossil Fuel companies over the decades to try to make us feel bad for that and make it feel like it should be placed on youre shoulders instead of on the shoulders of the big companies and the governments, frankly, of the world that have talked about this now, and havent taken the massive actions that are necessary in order to make the. Does the Flip Side of that also hold true, which it doesnt really matter if my neighbor or the guy at the gym believes in Climate Change, because Climate Change doesnt care. I dont have to waste my breath convincing somebody, we should put our energy, instead, into what . Yeah, i think there is Climate Change has been described as a sinister math problem, right . Its about the atmosphere and how much heattraffic gas, how much Carbon Dioxide we put into it. I do think efforts would be better placed, rather than trying to convince a neighbor i think those conversations are important, ill say that, and i think theyre not happening enough. In polling, americans say they hearty about Climate Change in the media. About a quarter of americans say they regularly hear about it in the media, and about a third have a conversation about it, but i do think thats a problem, but i think the energy is better placed, pushing for local, state, national and international policy change, right . We need regulations that are going to get us out of the Fossil Fuel era and do that as quickly as possible. The science tells us the world needs to be carbon neutral by about 2050. That date is really rapidly approaching when you think in an earth time kind of way. So have those conversations, but your Neighbor Isnt to blame for the magnitude of this. Money interests that have profited from the pollution of the planet are to blame, and our governments for not acting faster. John, very quickly, what is the one thing we all can do that would make a difference . I would sigh get involved in the political Process Push to things like clean energy standards, getting countries off of Fossil Fuels, and requires a shift to cleaner renewables which are safer for public health, dont heat up the planet. Like sort of big Make Roe Level changes are what is needed in or to maybe the polluting expensive and incentivize companies to do that. John sutter, thank you very much. The Delta Variant has upended the return to Inperson Learning for millions of students. I will make a change if i see its necessary. Superintendent John Strikers covid19 plan at schools in jackson county, mississippi, is to keep masking, vaccination, and quarantining voluntary. He collects his own data on covid in his schools to craft his own policy. He says hes chosen Quality Education over pandemic fear. We lost a teacher to covid, and it broke our heart. I wept. But when im making my decisions, i need to do the best i can as a leader to make nonemotional decisions. He stands by his nonemotional decision to essentially do nothing. And using the data. And so, you know, i feel our kids are safe relative to the other schools with those options. Reporter school starts August 5th in jackson county. There are around 9,000 students in the district. And his own data shows an astonishing 6. 4 of them have reported a covid infection, a number he says is starting to trend down slightly. The medical director at the Los Angeles unified School District is running a program with a completely different approach from jackson county, mississippi. We have a robust and one of the largest Testing Programs in the nation where were testing all students and staff regardless of Vaccination Status every week. Reporter all adults inside Los Angeles schools are required to be vaccinated. Everyone is required to wear a mask. Los Angeles Schools have been in session for almost three weeks. Just half of 1 of the students and staff tested were positive for covid19. Dr. Daniel benjamin, a pediatrician studying the Pandemic School at Duke University says even though its early in the year, theres enough data to strongly suggest what works. If a School District does not have a mandatory Masking Policy and is not quarantining thousands of people by the second week of school, then that School District is very likely being irresponsible as it relates to Quarantine And Exposure of people at school. Reporter benjamin likes Vaccine Mandates for adults in education, like those in illinois, New Jersey, oregon, and washington.
