So lets begin with Cnn Chief white House Correspondent kaitlan collins. Of everything ive laid out, which is President Bidens top priority . Reporter i think coronavirus is probably top of mind for the White House right now. We know President Biden is going to give a major speech on that this week. Also, alisyn, as you noted he has several things on his plate when he comes back to Washington Tonight following this holiday weekend. And tomorrow you will see the president Go To New York and new jersey. Both the states he has declared states of Emergency And Disaster declarations under way there right now in an effort to help with what weve been seeing on the ground. And a lot of this he is going to tie to what he did in louisiana touring the damage there which is, of course, Climate Change. And his domestic agenda, something that we know will be at the forefront when lawmakers are back here in washington. But, alisyn, its not just that. He is still dealing with afghanistan, even though the u. S. Military is long gone from there. There are still about 100 americans who are in afghanistan, that they are working to get out. According to his chief of staff, ron klain. Thats one other aspect that hes dealing with. But going back to the pandemic, thats another Big One that is overshadowing a lot of this. You are seeing Record Number of covid cases. Were starting to see numbers for deaths averages around the country back to where we were in march. That is something the White House did not expect to go back to. And so theyre dealing with the pan defensemen knick a state they were not expecting to be in in september. They thought they would be moving a lot further along and having these reopenings across the country they were hoping would accompany mass vaccinations and, of course, thats just not what were seeing. Youre seeing numbers much lower than expected in the jobs report that they got on friday. Alisyn, its a lot of different crises and challenges facing the president. Typically that is something every president has to deal with, unforeseen challenges. That is going to be the case when President Biden gets heard this week and several issues all lining up at once. Okay, kaitlan collins, thank you for the update from the White House. So tomorrow, as you heard, President Biden will visit two towns devastated by the flooding after Hurricane Ida. Manville, new jersey, and the new York Borough of queens. Ida made landfall two sundays ago as a category 4 hurricane. More than 60 people have died from the vast majority from the catastrophic Rainfall And Flooding in the northeast. Police just released this video of what they were facing when the flooding started. I mean, i want you just to Take A Look at this. This is an officer who had to brave the possibility of live wires. They didnt know what the situation was with the electricity in this building, and he was trying to get through a completely submerged basement in queens to find anyone who was trapped. The police ultimately called in the fire department, and three bodies were found here. Today a Fema Official and some members of congress toured queens. Paula, what do we know . Reporter elected officials visited one of the queens neighborhoods perhaps hit the hardest by the storm as it swept through the region now five days since that happened and, still, residents combing through their belongings in their basements and throwing out belongings to the curb too damaged to repair. Met by some frustrated residents. Mayor Bill De Blasio toured this devastation again along with representative Ocasiocortez And Chuck schumer seeing what folks are dealing with specifically here in queens, New York. And what ive heard over and over again they certainly hope this will be more than just a photoop. This will actually lead to both short term and longterm assistance. Talking short term, that is, of course, the individual assistance they are hoping the biden administration will be able to help expedite with the latest approval of an emergency declaration. And in terms of long term, one resident near by as these officials were visiting the site calling on repairs to the drainage. Theyve lived here for well over a decade, at least one woman in particular, has lived here for 13 years and fear this is can happen again. So that really gives you a sense of the frustration right now that is certainly happening on the ground. Ive also seen it in neighboring new jersey, specifically in manville, new jersey, where President Biden is expected to see firsthand the devastation and the concern across the board is certainly the same. When will that level of assistance come where they will be able to rebuild what they lost, alisyn . Polo sandoval, thank you very much. As we mentioned President Biden will visit queens tomorrow. And a long time resident there spoke to cnn just as water overtook her home and took the lives of her neighbors, a mother and son. I cant think anymore about how i feel at this point because of the chaos outside. My neighbors, the loss of life ive lost everything in here. Mostly the lives out there. Joining us now is that woman from queens that you just saw who was in shock, amrita bhagwandin. Amrita, my condolences for the loss of your neighbors and for everything youve been through over these past days. I know you are still feeling emotional about all of this as you were, underably, thursday night, feeling overwhelmed. And im just wondering whats changed since then and if youve gotten any help. Good afternoon, alisyn. Thank you for having me. We really appreciate getting the word out as were seeking help constantly here and not really seeing much of it. Not much has changed except for we have gone out ourselves and got our friends and neighbors and the community, the New York nypd, the councilmen have been working with us along with whatever close friends and families we have hired, engineers, plumbers, electricians, cleaners, laborers, and what we need is funds to pay these bills that are upon us. We have not had any kind of help apart from the Sanitation Department has been here taking our garbage, which seems to be endless. That is all. The food has been coming in from the religious organizations. The good samaritans, who do not want to be named. The food has been coming in. The Toilet Paper has been coming in, the paper towels, the toiletries, everything has been coming in from good samaritans around this neighborhood. The black community has stood up for us here big time. And, amrita, we mentioned you lost two of your neighbors, a mother and son. Explain to us, did the flooding come in so quickly that people couldnt evacuate . That is how quickly it happened, alisyn. Ive experienced this multiple times, and thats why i plan accordingly when i see the Weather Pattern changing. It takes over so quickly that there is no time to save anything. All you can do is save yourself. And, unfortunately, it came so quickly that it swept them away so very fast. So, so very fast. I always thought it was me because, as i said before, i was trapped with that situation here before where the water was going to my second floor. And so i always leave the house because i feel that i would drown in here. I never thought it would go so far. Im the first property. And so in the past you have had the experience where youve had to, what, take shelter on your second floor because it comes in so quickly . No, i take shelter down the block. I have to leave the premises and Go To another house. My inlaws or my neighbor that is on higher ground. And i stand and i watch it as it comes up because ive been Suffering Health wise from it, having these Panic Attacks and all kinds of different issues that i will not mention here because of it, like nightmares, because i feel trapped. Can you imagine being in your Living Room and its filling up with water and theres like an ocean outside. We are not living on the Jersey Shore that you would expect water to come in a place like Beautiful Hollis into your Living Room or Go To your second floor. So my basement filled up to the ceiling where everything was floating and then it came into the first floor. So i had 14 feet. Its a very unstable condition. Its not livable but im trying to hang in here having all these contractors coming and evaluate whats going on. Thats why we would like to see some assistance here immediately. What do you want President Biden to see when he comes there tomorrow . I want President Biden to actually see the problem itself. Its actually visible. Were in a basin. The water comes down from both sides, and this is not laying blame, but i dont think theres enough understanding of the problem. I know that the engineers have worked tirelessly. I know the mayor has worked tirelessly on this, and its not a blame game. It is a solution were looking for for everyone, safety. I want to know what the alternative is for the second rain, if it comes next week, as i feel that water is going to seep in right now as it is, even it its not a storm. I really feel that im susceptible to having water coming right now. And i want to know what is the futuristic plan for this neighborhood that pays their property taxes, is there one . Are we going to get the Army Corps of engineers and assess this properly . Thats what i want President Biden to see. And, by the way, its not that some of your elected leaders havent been trying. As i understand it back in 2015, mayor De Blasio of New York had approved something like 1. 9 billion in projects to alleviate flooding in the Queens Area in terms of infrastructure, and i dont know if those projects are not happening fast enough or if Climate Change is happening too fast, but clearly whatever that money thats been spent hasnt solved the problem. It has not and mayor De Blasio has given money to this neighborhood. Its not working, as i said. I dont think this problem is evaluated correctly. Were living here, we want them to come and speak with us so we can give them good understanding of what the contractor, i believe, is not even aware of what he was dealing with when he started to do this work. Im not an engineer. My husband is actually a structural engineer and has some background in this. But i would tell you while they were driving the piles and banging the streets that i could the house was shaking. I had videos of the house shaking for the entire year since last may they have been here, and i could tell you the foundation has been shaken a lot for all these properties. And so they are very susceptible to something happening major, and there is major more thats going to happen if we do not act right now. They need to come and look at these properties seriously and know that there can be another death when the next storm approaches. Have you considered moving . Is it possible for your family to move, or is that out of the question . When you say move, i have talked about everything. Believe me, the first time i came in here when i bought this property, you know, im stuck with a huge mortgage here. Properties are not cheap in queens. So i have a very huge mortgage on my head at this point. When you say move, do i sell it . Who is going to buy my property knowing that there is a problem here . The city has to take the responsibility from us and relieve us of these properties. Thats my suggestion. This study cannot be done with people living in these properties. They need to come and its not my property alone. There are quite a few properties that need to be evaluated if its livable or not and safe enough for Human Beings because i dont think any One Of Us you, myself, the officials, the mayor would want to be living sitting in their Living Room with their children and grandchildren and Theres Water filling up in their houses and you dont have anywhere to go. Its not the best feeling in the world. Yeah, amrita, thank you for explaining all of that to us and sharing your personal Anxiety And Ordeal that you have been through. We really appreciate it and we will check in tomorrow as President Biden visits as well. Thank you very much, and we do expect President Biden here. I know hes a very hes a man that listens, and hell understand what were dealing with and do the right thing for us. Thank you very much. Thank you, amrita. Take care of yourself. So where Ida First Made Landfall more than a week ago, people are still stranded without basic necessities. Some Louisiana Grocery stores have empty shelves. Some Gas Stations still have not been able to get more fuel. Power is still out for more than 500,000 customers in louisiana and some do not expect it restored until The End of this month. So obviously its a dire circumstance because forecasters are predicting heat of over 100 degrees in some areas. In laplace, louisiana, nadya, tell us how people are coping. Reporter well, alisyn, they just cant catch a break. You mentioned the heat advisory. People dont have power in laplace, louisiana, where they wont likely have power until The End of the month which means no air conditioning. We had another round of showers coming through. Take a look, a lot of the homes in the area look just like this with blue tarps on them, with the roofs and shingles and everything missing from their homes that was ripped off in the storm. I want to introduce you to the house owner. She was gracious enough to let us come inside her home and talk about the damage. What have you been dealing with for the past eight days since Hurricane Ida made her way through . Weve been dealing with a lot of heat, no power, spotty network. Its super hot. We have a lot of trash. The smell is ridiculous. The hardest part about it we cant communicate and we cant get with our adjusters. We have to travel sometimes a mile, up to four miles to get some type of service. Reporter youve been trying to contact fema, your insurance company. What has that been like for you trying to get some service out here . Its been really hard because we try to reach them and they try to reach us. We had to go out, like i said before, four miles to try to catch them, to do a virtual they couldnt come here because of covid or whatever. It will not work in our home so its been very difficult to get the help that we need but weve been trying. Hopefully well have something friday. Reporter you have the best, most optimistic, hopeful attitude considering everything thats been going on. This tree behind us could have landed on your house and your neighbors house, but it split between the two houses and didnt do the damage it could have done. You feel lucky, grateful that happened . It was very scary. It was swaying side to side. Please, god, dont let this fall on our house or our neighbor. It fell in between. A couple days later, how are we going to get this tree out of here. The Fellowship Of Christian Athletes came down and it took them two days and a staff of 12 to get it out of here. Reporter community helping each other out, neighbors helping neighbors. How long do you think it will be until you can get back in your home . Right now its not livable. The mold is growing in there. Everything was saturated. Whats next . We are converting one of our trailers we were going to use for a Food Truck to stay in temporarily. It will be three to six months before we can get back in because there are limited supplies. We have to wait for adjusters and things like that. Hopefully we can stay three months but it may be up to six months. Reporter how do you keep a positive attitude . You could be balled up crying on the floor right now with everything youve been through, and youve been through other hurricanes as well, how do you keep that attitude . I count my blessings. God has been good to me and sent people my way. When i get weary, i take my time to help somebody else, feed people to get my mind off of it because it could be really difficult. Reporter danielle, thats the kind of Attitude Everyone needs to have especially right now after this storm. Likely wont have power until The End of the month but people in laplace are doing the best that they can. Alisyn . Nadia romero, thank you very much for that. The White House had hoped to start the shots on September 20th, but the chief of staff, ron klain, Cannot Say if that goal will be met. Dr. Anthony fauci says the plan will likely only start with the pfizer vaccine. Cases, meanwhile, continue to surge. The sevenday average is now 300 higher than it was last Labor Day. Cnns Nick Watt has more. Reporter summer is over. This week in the northeast many schools start back, but ominous signs from the south, kentucky schools opened already and already one in five districts have closed at some Point Due to case counts, quarantines, or just lack of staff. Well have a further uptick with the schools not having masks on and well have Labor Day travel on top of this. So, yes, there will be a further uptick. Reporter meantime, more data that Vaccine Booster shots are now necessary due to the delta variant. Reporter worldwide officials now watching the mu variant, not a threat, not yet, but could partially evade the current vaccines. The virus will continue to mutate until we have a level of immunity in our communities around this country and around the world. Reporter now israels Health Chief has been asked to brief fda advisors and will present more data on the boosters. A lot of talk about boosters today, but lets not forget, alisyn, more than a quarter of eligible americans still havent gotten their first shot. Alisyn . Nick watt, thank you for that reminder. Joining us now is dr. Carlos del rio, the executive Associate Dean of emory University School of medicine at grady health system. Doctor, thank you for being here. I think theres this strange narrative taking hold which is that somehow by needing boosters its a failure of the Vaccine Or Something like that. But, i mean, as you point out, and maybe we need to be reminded of this, very few vaccines are a one and done shot. Most are multiple shots. Thats exactly right, alisyn. I think we need to remember that the vaccines up to now have been incredibly effective and the reality, as you heard throughout the Reporting Right before i came up, is everybody in the hospital is unvaccinated, everybody who is dying, who is critically ill is unvaccinated. The problem right now is not boosters. Its actually that almost 50 of americans are not fully vaccinated. And until we get people vaccinated were really not getting to where we need to be in order to protect ourselves from this virus. Yes, but to be clear, dr. Del rio, there are some breakthrough cases, there are some people, obviously its a fraction, who have been vaccinated and are in the hospital and are even dying. But i think your larger point is the unvaccinated are threatening everyone elses lives. Correct. There are vaccine failures. There are vaccine breakthroughs, but the reality is those are the minority of the cases. The great majority of cases are unvaccinated individuals. And i worry we focus so much on boosters, were almost sending the narrative that vaccines dont work. I want to emphasize vaccines are doing a really good job protecting us. If we had more people vaccinated we would be in a very different place than we are right now. Such a good point. Your point, lots of vaccines need multiple shots polio, d measles, these are not one and done shots. Does the research suggest this would be an annual shot, much like the Flu Vaccine . You know, i dont think so because the virus is very different than the flu but i do think this will be a vaccine that requires three shots. Most require a dose that requires three shots for full protection. I dont think it will be a vaccine that requires annual shots. I got the Moderna Vaccine. Can i get a Pfizer Booster . Well, you know, first of all, theres some recent data suggesting people who got the Moderna Vaccine have much higher level of antibodies than those who got the pfizer vaccine. I got pfizer and im perfectly happy having pfizer. Having said that, no matter what you get booster with, it will work. It really doesnt matter. Okay. But in terms of the timing, you know, of course im comforted to hear moderna provides more antibodies, but is it still eight months . Are we still using that Time Line . When should americans who are listening start to think their immunity is wearing off . Well, i would start by saying that i would tell people not to worry. The great majority of people is probably not going to mean anything because the reality is you have other levels of immunity. You have tcell immunity, other levels of protection. So in the great majority of people, except for maybe older individuals, immunosuppressed persons, those living in nursing homes, can wait a very long period of time before they get the next vaccine. Probably the longer you wait, the better it is. Certainly dont get a booster before six months. Eight months, maybe even longer than that. And for the people who are immunocompromised or older people, do you think that September 20th that they will be able to see a Pfizer Booster shot . Well, i dont want to put a date because, again, i want the fda and i want the cdc to make a recommendation based object the science and based on reviewing the recommendations. Immunosuppressed People Today can start getting a Booster Shot because the reality thats already been approved by both the fda and the acip. Great point. Has facilitated the departure of several american citizens from afghanistan after the u. S. Withdrawal, and they left via land into a third country. Secretary of State Antony Blinken is in qatar where hes addressing next steps in afghanistan. Hell meet with u. S. Allies in the region to talk about getting the remaining evacuees, u. S. Citizens and afghan allies out of that country. So lets bring in cnns senior national Security Correspondent to tell us about the evacuations. What do we know . Reporter just because the u. S. And diplomatic presences in afghanistan are over that the Evacuation Operations would not end, and here they are keen to show that they are still getting americans out. Four americans have gotten out of afghanistan, according to the State Department. They took an over Land Route, which means they did not fly out. They went to a country, a neighboring country, which the State Department did not reveal. We are told they are in good condition and perhaps most interestingly, alisyn, were told the taliban did not impede the process. They were aware of the evacuation but did not stop it in any way. That is incredibly important because there are many americans left, many afghans left who want to get out, and the taliban has provided assurances to the u. S. And other countries that these afghans and foreign nationals with the proper documentation can get out so its a good sign them are allowing these americans who get out. Of course it is just four americans. We understand from the biden administration that there are around 100 who are still in the country who would like to get out. They say they are in constant contact with these americans who would still like to get out. All told, alisyn, around 6,000 americans were able to get out. So far among the evacuees out of a total of 124,000. But the biden administration has not put a very fine point on how they plan to get people out who they would like to. Theyre saying they want the airport to get back up and running. But for now we do understand that there are over Land Route possibilities as demonstrated by these four americans. Alisyn . Really interesting. Thank you very much. Despite the evacuation of that handful of americans from afghanistan, the top republican on the house foreign Affairs Committee says he has received classified briefings the taliban forces are preventing many americans from leaving the airport in afghanistan. They are not clearing the airplanes to depart. They sat at the airport for the last couple days. These planes, and theyre not allowed to leave. We know the reason why is because the taliban wants something in exchange. This is really turning into a Hostage Situation where theyre not going to allow american citizens to leave until they get full recognition from the united states of america. A source tells cnn the u. S. Government is not aware of any Hostage Situation in afghanistan, but lets bring in marina with a nonprofit organization helping to evacuate people from afghanistan. Thank you very much for being here. I know youve been working for days to get afghan girls and young women out of the country. So whats been your experience . Are they is the taliban blocking them . Yes, absolutely. Were a small part of a large group of people trying to get out now and weve been there for just over a week, and my group is mostly young women and girls, and we cant understand what the problem is, why were not allowed to leave. So the conditions in which people are being held while they wait to be called to the airport are also deteriorating rapidly and the crowds are, of course, coming as people hear there are planes even though the planes are fully manifested. So the situation is getting more and more pressurized by the day. And we dont understand why were not allowed to leave. Well, tell us about that. Whats the taliban doing . How exactly are they blocking the planes from leaving . Were not actually sure. We dont have a global view on the situation. I have my team inside one of the places where people are being held and everybody is talking and theres not much else to do while they wait for a week. We dont have any direct line to the taliban or the u. S. Government or anybody else. What i can tell you is just what we can glean from talking with people there, and we think that the negotiations were between the taliban and the charter company. We assume theres some sort of money being discussed, but we really dont know. So in the meantime people are being fed and theyre being kept there. But theyre not being allowed to go. And were not sure what the outcome will be. And for our girls theres no going back. Theyre at great risk in afghanistan and they need to leave. Were really pleading with the taliban and the u. S. Government if they have any leverage left to find a solution to this and let those planes get off the ground. Well, i mean, the taliban themselves have said they dont want afghans leaving the country. They dont want to have the brain trust. They dont want to have young women leaving there. And so are these these are afghans. Did they try to get out before American Forces left on August 31st . So this particular group was launched before August 31st and that was part of the problem. They had already been called to come for this opportunity before the 31st, and then when u. S. Policy changed on the 31st it was our own government that caused the delay because the State Department disallowed centcom from receiving flights out of afghanistan because there werent suitable Vetting Methods for the manifest so that lost a couple days. Now its the taliban blocking the takeoff. Hofr whoever was responsible, the End Result is the same. We have people who are mostly women at risk, journalists, Ngo Employees that are stuck and at growing risk. By the way, the worst fears have already come to pass. In terms of what the taliban has in mind for the future. Heres a photo from this weekend. This is the first day of a university in kabul under the taliban. You can see already its being segregated. I dont know if you can see on the right hand of your screen. There are the women on the righthand side obviously in much more traditional talibanissued dress, and there are the men across a curtain on the lefthand side. And then this woman who is a former Government Employee in kabul. She and other women had tried to organize a peaceful protest this weekend to continue on with their jobs. And here is what happened. Translator together with a group of our colleagues we wanted to go near the former Government Offices for a protest. But before we got there, the taliban Hit Women With Electric Tasers and used Tear Gas against women. They also hit women on the head with a gun magazine, and the women became bloody. There was No One to ask why. So its just as bad as people had predicted. And what happens to these young women that youre working with if they cant get out . They dont see any future for themselves in the talibancontrolled afghanistan. These are women who climb mountains, theyre professionals, theyre articulate, they have dreams. They are being told now that they cant all of that is being taken away from them. Im worried for the Mental Health of so many girls and women across afghanistan. Its one thing to think about their physical safety, but Everything Theyve ever thought that they could do with their lives is being crushed. So, for them, theres no going back. And im worried about them making foolish decisions because theyre being put in this position where something was offered and theyre just waiting, waiting, waiting. So far theyre okay.
