Shots, that is the focus right now. The white House Chief of staff says at this point he doesnt know when americans will get 19-booster'>Covid19 Booster shots despite an initial announcement last month that a third dose would be available to everyone on September 20th. That would be just two weeks from today. Now that is not clear at all. This after top health officials warned that more time is needed to review all of the data. Dr. Fauci says hes confident that pfizer is still on track for a September 20th booster rollout, but the modernas may be delayed beyond that. Grim picture in the united states as children are returning to the classroom, the cdc says that childrens hospitals across the country are filling with covid cases. Community transmission is dangerously high and another troubling development, the sevenday average of new cases of Covid Per 100,000 people is 300 higher than it was on Labor Day of last year. We have a lot to get to on this. Well get there in a moment. Lets begin with our Arlette Saenz from wilmington delaware. The White House, dana was pushing Ron Klain on this yesterday for clarity, i think, for everyone, and it seems Like their stance is we bought enough boosters. We have them. Were waiting on the fda and we dont know when thats going to be. Yeah, poppy, and the White House had been hoping that they would have two versions of a 19-booster'>Covid19 Booster shot available for that September 20th rollout. It appears that that initial plan is now taking a hit. Officials are saying that pfizer appears to be on track to be approved before that date, but moderna might take a little bit longer. As officials are saying, they need more time to review that data, which they initially found to be inadequate. But the White House is also insisting that no 19-booster'>Covid19 Booster shots will be administered without fda approval, and then the recommendation of the cdc. Its arguing that they set that September 20th target so that a plan was in place that once the formal approval came through, theyd be ready to roll out those shots immediately. Take a listen to a bit of what white House Chief of staff Ron Klain had to tell Dana Bash yesterday. Did he get ahead of the science by setting that specific date for boosters before all the data was in . No, dana, i think what i said was we would be ready as of the 20th, which was the projection we were given from the senior Science Team as to when the fda would clear the boosters. I want to be absolutely clear. No ones going to get boosters until the fda says theyve approved, until the Cdc Advisory Committee makes a recommendation. Reporter and dr. Anthony fauci also said over the weekend that studies are underway to determine whether these Booster Shots can be mixed and matched. So someone who initially received the two moderna shots might be eligible and able to get a pfizer shot. He said those studies are still a few weeks away from being completed. This all comes as there is a real sense of urgency within the White House of trying to get ahold and contain this virus as Transmission Rates remain high, kids are heading back to school, and theres a threat of future variants. This back and forth about the Vaccine Boosters can cause some confusion at a time when clarity is needed. Poppy. For sure, thank you for the reporting from wilmington for us this morning. Despite everything we know about covid19 and the fact that we have safe and effective vaccines, the average number of new daily cases in the u. S. Is still more than 126,000, our elizabeth cohen, our senior medical correspondent is with us. Good morning to you. Things look very different than they did last year. Good morning, president obama pi. Good morning, poppy. I didnt realize how different it was until i looked at this graph that im about to show you, if you look on the far lefthand side, thats where new cases were Labor Day 2020. The far right side is where we are today. This is a sevenday average of new cases. We are three times higher than we were a year ago now. On Labor Day last year versus today. Labor day last year we had about 12 new cases per 100,000 people. Now its nearly 50 cases per 100,000 people. Two big reasons, the Delta Variant. So incredibly contagious. And also, remember, last september we were still pretty much on lockdown. Schools were being done virtually. People were much better about masking and social distancing. Now i think its safe to say that in many parts of the country, social distancing is kind of Oa Thing of the past an people hardly are wearing masks. Poppy. Its completely different now, and yet this is so contagious and continuing to spread and continue to threaten our unvaccinated kids. Thank you for the reporting. Lets talk about all of these headlines, there are so many. With our medical analyst dr. Reiner at george washington university. Good morning, doctor, and thanks for your time. My pleasure, thanks for having me. Lets begin where you think people need to start this morning in terms of understanding if theyre going to get a booster, when theyre going to get a booster, and if they can mix and match, right . If modernas delayed in rolling it out, if you got a moderna initial vaccine, can you then get a Pfizer Booster right away . So i think its safe to say that everyone whos been vaccinated in the united states at some point is going to get a booster. Now, the problem is that most of our data comes out of israel and almost all the vaccine that israel has used has been the Pfizer Vaccine. Thats why right now we stand basically ready to give boosters to people who have received the Pfizer Vaccine in the united states because thats where our data comes from, from israel, and we have less data on moderna, and thats what fda is insisting on really dotting all the is and crossing all the ts and understanding, first of all, whether folks who have been vaccinated with the Moderna Vaccine require a booster and how safely to do that. And we have even less data to understand the sort of longterm efficacy, durability of the johnson johnson vaccine. There are 14-million'>14 Million in this country have received the j j vaccine, and were still in need of data to understand how to boost that. But i think its safe to say that about two weeks from now well start boosting the country with the Pfizer Vaccine for people who have received a prior dose of the Pfizer Vaccine. Probably i would wbet six month and longer after their second shot. Okay. So youre confident the fda is going to give this the green light and things will move forward pretty much as previously thought. Okay. Thats good news. You mentioned israel, so lets talk a little bit more about what were seeing in israel. Youve got approval there for boosters ongoing, right . Since august 1st, when they started this, with 60yearolds and above and then on down to 12yearolds and above, Theyve Given Boosters to about 30 of their population, but then if you look at these numbers, youve still got cases in israel at record highs. Do you anticipate thats going to drop significantly once a majority of the population has their booster . Yeah, and youre already starting to see clues about that. If you look at hospitalizations for serious illness in israel, which were doubling every ten days for weeks, theyve now started to drop beginning about two weeks after their Booster Program started. So there is data from israel suggesting that boosting immunity with a third dose of the vaccine will not only reduce serious hospitalizations but also infections. So i do expect that to continue, and well start to see more of that coming out of israel. And its so interesting their covid czar is already talking about a fourth Booster Shot for people. So i wonder what you make of that and if this becomes the global norm once there is equitable access to vaccine, which there is not around the world, that were going to be talking about three, four, five boosters or annual boosters. Well, i think thats really getting ahead of ourselves now. I think many people have really become have started to understand that our original Dosing Scheme with the mrna vaccines, which was done to try and extinguish the fire last winter probably could have been better. In other words, the second dose probably should have been later on to boost the immunity in a more maximal kind of way. And current thought is that with a third dose, we may get a very durable and much higher immunity from a third dose without having to think right now about, you know, doses every several months. I would not, you know, at all jump to that conclusion. That would be great if the third one is what we need and it does it. Youve got, you know, tragedy playing out in so many icus across america. I was just looking at the data from yesterday in eight states, many of them in the south, youve got 90 of icu beds at capacity, and now the World Health Organization is watching a new variant, and thats the Mu Variant, and to be clear, its not nearly as Big A concern as the Delta Variant right now. Theres about 2,000 cases of it in the u. S. But can you explain to people why it matters that this virus keeps mutating, and does the Mu Variant have the potential to become as deadly and contagious as the Delta Variant . Right, well, the first thing to remember is that the virus will continue to mutate until we have a level of immunity in our communities around this country and around the world, so continued infection is basically the Pea Tree Dish for the virus continuing to mutate. And the Mu Variant, which is not a concern in the united states right now, much less than, you know, 1 of the isolates in the united states are mu. The vast majority, 99 of the isolates in the united states are delta. Delta is the concern in this country. And around the World Mu is not at all a significant problem. Its a problem in two countries around the world, columbia and ecuador, but, again, around the world, it really represents about 0. 1 of all the iisolates. The reason its a concern, some of the mutations that have been found in that variant suggest that it could be more resistant to immunity and vaccines. So thats why the World Health Organization has labeled it a variant of interest. The Cdc Hasnt yet done that. There is still, i think, a widespread suggestion that this variant is still susceptible to treatment with our vaccines. Well keep an eye on it. Thank you so much, dr. Reiner. My pleasure. Especially on a holiday morning. Thanks again. Next, millions of americans are set to lose their Pandemic Unemployment Benefits Today. What does it mean for them and the economic recovery . There are also many questions about why a Nursing Home in louisiana was evacuated to a warehouse. Seven people ended up dying there. Our national correspondent Nadya Romero is in laplace, louisiana, for us this morning. When you look at those projections from the power companies, you know, September 29th for some parishes and beyond, it doesnt appear theres any meaningful relief in sight. Reporter yeah, poppy, there are some parts of louisiana that had their power restored over the weekend, and we were there when people were cheering the linemen on, so excited to just have their power back after seven days without having power. Now its day eight here in laplace, louisiana, and this is an area that was one of the hardest hit by Hurricane Ida. So were outside of a navy distribution center. They serve about 1,500 cars a day. Reporter so that is just heartbreaking to hear these stories of people who are in need. Take a look behind me. Theres the line. It wraps all the way around down the road of people who have been lined up two, three hours before the Distribution Site even opens just to get assistance. Poppy, thats the need that were seeing, and it is unwavering. Wow, right s and can you imagine bringing a newborn Baby Home to this scenario that she just described. Bless her and Everyone Whos Volunteering to help Like that. Thank you for being on the ground to cover it. President biden is planning to tour some of the other very hard hit communities from Idas Path including in New York, new jersey. That will happen tomorrow. Those states saw catastrophic flooding from the remnants of i ida, at least 50 people died from that. In the northeast hundreds more needed to be rescued. Polo sandoval is in New York. We were in the middle of it, and luckier than so many given what happened here in New York and across new jersey. What is the hope of the president and what do these communities want from the president s visit . Reporter that they will get that financial assistance to try to repair or recover what they lost. You wouldnt know it. Were actually standing right now in one of the neighborhoods in queens that was hit the hardest, not only with the damages but also experiencing several lives that were lost in this neighborhood, one in particular that the nypd released brand new video on yesterday. This is video of an incident that took place on wednesday during the height of the storm. And in it you see what is an attempt, we now know, an unsuccessful attempt to save a family that was stuck in their flooded out Basement Apartment not far from where we are here in woodside, queens. At one point the agency says they had to pull their officers back due to concerns of live wires iand rising flood waters. They made that horrible discovery of a family of three inside including a 2yearold Toddler and his parents. Those three individuals added to that total Death Toll or that Death Toll here in New York city, and you do have obviously those who have lost loved ones, and then you also have those who have lost some of those difficult to replace parts of their homes and appliances. And thats why theyre certainly calling on the federal government to try to step in to provide that kind of support. In neighboring new jersey, residents waking up to news that President Biden did approve that Dis Disaster Declaration thats meant to provide that financial relief, poppy. I heard from queens residents all week long, and they say that is what they want. But still they consider themselves lucky when you consider what that family experienced not far from here on wednesday. You cant even imagine it, right . And it could be any of our children. The white flag of the taliban seen there flying over panshir province. Nic robertson joins me frois ll bad, pakistan. Also announced that they are going lay out their new government in a matter of days, what will that look Like . Reporter you know, its very hard to tell what the new government is going to look Like. The sources that were around the taliban leadership, they used to give us reliable information. On this subject, theyve gone completely silent, so at the moment it seems to be anyones guess precisely what will happen. We do know from pakistani sources there is a Dispute Over who could be defense minister. Some of the taliban Military Commanders are in Dispute Over that. We do know from these same sources that the taliban wont nominate somebody whos closely associated with Al Qaeda because he has u. N. Sanctions on him for connections to terrorism. And the supreme leader, the commander of the faithful they call him, he will remain the sort of Head Of State for the taliban, become the Head Of State of afghanistan. Really, what does that mean for the international community . We dont know. We dont know how inclusive its going to be. We dont know if theyre really going to give any power at any level in the government to women and what that might look Like, the expectations and the bar is really low on that one. The reality right now, we dont have a good assessment of what the government looks Like. What we do know from the resistance is they have a call to arms more broadly across the country outside the valley as well. Nic robertson reporting for us from pakistan. Thank you very much. Secretary of State Antony Blinken is flying to qatar. Some u. S. Scitizens and our afghan allies out of the country. The top republican on the house foreign Affairs Committee said he has received classified briefings that taliban forces are preventing americans from leaving literally on planes and they wont let them take off. They are not clearing the airplanes to depart. Theyve sat at the airport for the last couple days. These planes. And theyre not allowed to leave. We know the reason why is because the taliban wants something in exchange. This is really turning into a Hostage Situation where theyre not going to allow american citizens to leave until they get full recognition from the united states of america. Our congressional Correspondent Lauren Fox joins us. Chris wallace pushed and went back and forth for details. Mike mccall said it was his understanding that zero americans had been able to leave the country since the final u. S. Troops withdrew. Has any of this been confirmed by the State Department . Look, cnn immediately reached out to the State Department and the national Security Council Yesterday because these were very serious claims that the top republican on the house foreign Affairs Committee was making. We heard from the nsc was crickets. They did not respond to a request for comment, but the State Department did issue this revealing statement, and i want to read that to you. It says, quote, we understand the concern that many people are feeling as they try to facilitate further charter and other passage out of afghanistan. However, we do not have personnel on the ground. We do not have Air Assets in the country. We do not control the air space, whether over afghanistan or anywhere else in the region. And poppy, this just really goes to underscore what a serious and difficult situation it is on the ground because we do not have u. S. Forces on the ground. Remember, that is what the whole withdrawal was about. And the fact that we are not able to get quick information about whats happening is one of the reasons why mccaul has serious questions. A group that is trying to get americans and afghan allies out of that country, they said that they have a group of people that is trying to leave from this region of afghanistan, but they are not currently sitting on planes. Are there others, thats still a question up for discussion, but i think that we are still trying to find out more information about what mccaul said yesterday morning. Poppy. Right, and it shows the challenge now being gone of getting accurate information from the ground. Lauren, thanks for the reporting. Please keep us posted as you learn more. The Subway Logo . Wait im out of time . As the Delta Variant fuels surges of Covid Infections across the country, and in the wake of a disappointing u. S. Jobs report on friday, millions of americans set to lose their boosted emergency federal jobless benefits or unemployment Benefits Today. And millions more will lose an additional 300 in State Unemployment benefits. Lets get to our chief Business Correspondent Christine romans who has more. We knew this day was coming for a long time. Theyd said September 6th and now its here. Yeah, an important lifeline for millions of americans, and remember when this was enacted, people lost their jobs overnight, and they were facing just crushing economic uncertainty. So this was money first 600 a week extra Unemployment Benefits and an expanded group of people to get it and then 300. There are now 7. 5 million people who lose all their Benefits Today and 3 Million who lose that extra 300 a week. And the question is what happens, but we have a little indication maybe, at least on the Jobs Front because the Labor Day sort of crunched the data from about half the u. S. States that cut these boosted benefits early, right . And what did that show us . It showed that the states that sort of were painting so many of these workers as free loaders who werent going to get a job, that they wanted the free money instead, they didnt have appreciably bigger Job Growth in those states. It was basically the same, poppy. You know, the states that kept the benefits on and the states that took the benefits off, not a really big difference there. So it kind of Pokes Holes in that political, you know, that political chatter that this was Government Money that was keeping people from working. We know there are a lot of jobs open, 10. 1 million. We also know theres been this great reprioritization in covid of peoples lives. People arent going to plug right back into the old job they used to have. Many are retraining for higher paid jobs. Weve seen companies raising wages, walmart just raised wages again for 500,000 people. Theyre trying to entice people back into the labor market. Youve got Child Care issues, health concerns, the Family Unit has changed. People are taking Care Of elderly relatives, so its more than money. Covid has reordered our priorities. The great reordering, right, as our Friend Heather long wrote in the washington post. Christine, thank you so much. Let me bring in rebecca dixon, executive director for the national employment law project. Its great to have you, good morning. Good morning. So now what . Because i know you opposed The Ending of these federal boosted Unemployment Benefits, but its happening, its ending, right . And the administration said, look, theres all these other ways were trying to help. Weve boosted these Career Grants to help people retrain. My question to you is if now is not the time top end them and we dont know how long covid is going to menace us Like this then when is the right time . The most important thing to remember is that the policy were making, its about the people who already recovered, and we know this recovery has been incredibly uneven. We know that women and people of color have been disproportionately affected in terms of job loss. Their employers were the ones who closed, and their employers are the ones who are looking at additionally having to close again and Business Slowdown due to the Delta Variant. So its really a question of can we actually make policy for Working People . Can we prioritize Main Street over Wall Street . So what do you think would help most in terms of policy . I think at this point what we need because our system is basically a patchwork of Ui State programs, and Everybodys State is different. In the 15 years that ive been working on this program, ive seen the state benefits erode and become worse, so not better over time, but worse over time, and so what we have right now is congress has an opportunity in reconciliation to actually put a Down Payment on fixing this program for good. So that means every state you would have 26 weeks of benefits, and youd have a Benefit Amount that actually replaces enough of your salary to allow you to search for work and to meet your basic needs. Well, you do have President Biden and the White House on your side on that because they have agreed publicly even lately that this system that when you say ui, unemployment insurance system, has in their words serious problems and needs immediate reform. I think the question is does that now come. I want you to respond to what white House Chief of staff Ron Klain told our Dana Bash on state of the Union Yesterday because she noted that the biden administration has given states the green light to use any of their unused covid Stimulus Money for extending unemployment for their citizens. But none as of friday had done so. Listen to what Ron Klain said to dana. The Delta Variant is having an impact on the economy but not so much on employment. We have think that the states have the tools they need to help people move from unemployment to employment. Do you agree the states have what they need to get people into these jobs . Poppy, i think the strongest indication is what Weve Seen States do, right . The evidence is we saw 26 states cut off benefits early this summer. So i dont really think the states can be trusted to actually really take into account what Working Families need right now. Theyre actually listening to employers and their narrative, and we dont have an issue with the Work Ethic of Working People. We have an issue with not putting people first and listening to employers in this over simplified narrative that is overblown. Workers dont need a push back into the labor market. Workers need good jobs to go back to. Were seeing a complete reshuffling as christine was just talking about, of what, you know, the Labor System and what jobs look Like in america. Rebecca dixon, thank you for being an important voice on this, and come back soon. Thank you for having me. Uber joined on literally an hour later. So both major companies are now on board. But can you bring us into the Decisionmaking Room . How did you guys make this. Absolutely. Well first and foremost, as you said, this law is egregious. And it bans virtually every abortion in the state of texas and encourages private citizens to sue one another. So late wednesday night, after the united states Supreme Court failed to enjoin the law, our President And Ceo reached out and said what can we do about this. And a small group of us immediately convened. I was very heartened to see this from two male cofounders understand this laws impact on a womens right to choose. And very quickly we decided that we wanted to act. We were also hearing from drivers who were very concerned about what this means for them. Are they under some obligation to monitor where they are riders are going and why. And so we both wanted to come out strongly in support of a womans right to choose as well as make our drivers feel okay. We did not want them being in this untenable position of not knowing whether theyre behavior was okay or not. And so within that first 24 hours, we decided what we were going to do and we were lucky to have strong support from our board of directors, including Valerie Jarrett who we discussed with and she said i only wish i had thought of it myself. It is interesting that a lot of this also was prompted by drivers being concerned. What does this mean for me. Am i going to be on the the hook for 10,000 and potential civil prosecution. What is happening now, kristen, as you know, following this move in texas, is that a number of republicanled states. More than half a dozen are looking to follow Texas Path here. And pass similar law thats the Supreme Court at this Point Hasnt intervened and doesnt know if it has the authority to check because were in inchartered territory. If that happens, is lyfts promise to cover all of the legal fees for any Driver Indefinite and would it span all of those states . That is our intention, yes, poppy. Obviously every state may enact its own laws. This Texas Law is unique in that it has this private right of action which is as we just heard on the clip a bound too for for even republican congress people. But, yes, lyft wants to support its drivers in this. The over Breadth Nature of the law where it said that anyone could be liable for aiding or abetting is just unique and it is egregious. And so that is why we wanted to come out strongly in support of our drivers and strongly against this law. Let me ask you a question that is not legal. But youre a Highranking Executive at The Company and it is very interesting and were in a new sort of phase of corporations speaking out and acting on social issues that are very divisive Like abortion. You wont have seen this i think five or tep years ago. And you have polling that shows 42 of residents in texas for Example Support banning abortion after a fetal heartbeat for example. Not specifically this law, but that in general. How do you weigh that as a company . Because for sure all of your customers and employees, drivers will not agree with this. Yes, thank you for that question. And when we discussed this decision, we knew that it could be controversial and we knew that we would not see 100 support but this is very much a moment of wanting to do what is right, what we as the executives at Lyft Felt was right and im very proud of us for having done this. We will lose some customers because of it. But that was not that was not something that was going to stop us from acting here. Its notable because it follows other decisions and moments of speaking out on social issues that lyft has made for example in 2019 you gave A Million Dollars to the aclu after trump issued the Travel Ban and youve taken a stand on a number of environmental issues. Is it lyfts position that the Role And Responsibility of founders and ceos in america is changing on social issues that you are not directly related to their business, that they need to speak out on them . Yes, i think that is right, poppy. You know, i joined lyft nearly nine years ago after working as The Companys outside counsel and one of the reasons that i joined The Company and i stayed as long as i have is because we are values led. Probably nine years ago we would not have spoken out on this issue. And honestly, as i think back on it, im not sure why, abortion is a constitutionally protected right and so im happy to see us take a voice and i hope that more of corporate america does this. And governments should be passing fair legislation and not look at to inappropriately ban a constitutional rights they have here. But i do think it is important that corporate america holds government accountable and speaks out in important issues. Well, i think if weve learned anything in the last few years it is how much power corporate america does have on key issues Like this. Kristin, thank you very much for taking the time to come on, especially on a holiday. Thanks, poppy. Coming up, a big question for all of us right now is will we get a Covid Booster . And when . Well have the details next. Someone once told me, that i should get used to people staring. So i did. Its okay, you can stare. When youre a twotime gold medalist, it comes with the territory.
