They accompanied the firefighters to thHref='https://vimarsana.com/news/e-trade'>E Trade center and captured a gripping footage of the immediate aftermath of the attacks. Including the only Href='https://vimarsana.com/news/footage-shot'>Footage Shot inside the towers on that day. Tonight, Cnn Films Presents 9 11. I dont even have time to think at that point. I just run. Then i feel someone jumping on top of me. And then the dust. So gripping. Joining us now, gideon and jules, directors of the 9 11 film and james han lon, a retired new Href='https://vimarsana.com/news/york-city'>York City Href='https://vimarsana.com/news/firefighter-and-producer'>Firefighter And Producer of the film. Thank you for joining me for this conversation. Gideon, lets start with you. Watching the film 20 years later. What stands out to you the most about what you captured on tape that day . Are you overcome with the emotions that you felt 20 years ago . Yes, just watching gives me goosebumps. At The End of that, 20 years later, it is the same thing. To be completely in awe with what we witnessed, the tHree of us. Those who came to rescue what we forgot to say often. That police and firefighters and civilians rescued almost 15,000 pe people. It is extraordinary. It really is when you think about the towers and the lives. You were there when the first Tower Collapsed and you had to use the light on your camera to them firefighters find a way out. I vividly remember that part of film when i watched this many years ago, when it first came out. What do you remember most . It was these moments where you realize, time becomes fluid. It is elastic. You have minutes. You have the impress it lasted for hours and hours. That light was a little Beacon Of Hope. THrough that light, we were finding the first people who would retrieve bodies. The body of that fantastic chaplain of the Href='https://vimarsana.com/news/fire-department'>Fire Department. It was for me, just a small way to help in a significant way. But it was a day where i saw, yes, we saw the worst of humanity which is terrorism. But we saw the best, the selflessness. The heroism of the first responders. In a moment where everything goes terribly wrong, you see the best of Human Nature that rises to the surface. I liked how you used Beacon Of Hope in those moments. It surely was. And james, the firefighters you worked with were hailed as heroes. A whole new generation of firefighters have joined the department since 9 11. I cant believe it has been 20 years. How does the legacy of those 9 11 firefighters carry on today . Well, i think that if you think about legacy, and the word that you used, there have been so many firefighters when they passed that day that their children have come along now and theyre firefighters on the job. They call them legacy kids. We did a piece of it on the last update. And you look at somebody like Href='https://vimarsana.com/news/josephine-smith'>Josephine Smith from 39 engine whose dad died in the towers, the north tower. Shes gone on to become a firefighter. And so many people have stepped up and so many have come back from afghanistan and iraq that were in the military and have now joined the Href='https://vimarsana.com/news/new-york'>New York Href='https://vimarsana.com/news/fire-department'>Fire Department which has really boosted us, and strengthened the Href='https://vimarsana.com/news/fire-department'>Fire Department. I can only imagine it strengthened the Href='https://vimarsana.com/news/fire-department'>Fire Department. Youve kept in touch with some of the firefighters. You followed on that day. And everyone has dealt with and remembers that day in their own way, right . Is there a common denominator in how that day impacted them . And how they look back on it . I think it is really a band of brothers. It must be the same in the military. Im just guessing. A tight group of people who put their life on the line every single day, when they leave home and say goodbye to their family. It is this band of brothers. Whether it is the Href='https://vimarsana.com/news/fire-house'>Fire House or for coffee. And it is, you know, like no matter if 20 years pass, it is like it was yesterday. They help each other. It is extraordinary to see that. It really does feel like yesterday. We have moments where we talk about 9 11 and well meet someone who is 19 years old and well say oh my gosh. Shes too young to even know about 9 11. Jules, for all those who are too young to remember, who werent born yet. What do you hope the film will provide to them . Well, i think especially, our documentary, it is filmed in such a way that for the new generation, which is so visual, it is almost for them like it was filmed with an iphone in a way. You have that proximity and a medium they understand seeing it next on these firefighters as every second is, everything is happening. Youre there with them. And i think theres a proximity to it that maybe, History Books or historical documents are less, have less of an effect on them here. They can really be alongside these firefighters, these credible Human Beings and seeing on that terrible day, the way that not only the firefighters, people in the towers, people in new Href='https://vimarsana.com/news/york-city'>York City, the entire country, really showed that resiliency of all being there for each other in the aftermath also. So they go tHrough that turny of what was supposed to be a normal day. And as the chief says, a hero is an ordinary person doing extraordinary thing in an extraordinary time. And thats what they can see up close and personal. It was supposed to be an ordinary day. Youre right about that. James, what do you hope people will take away from watching the film on the 20th Anniversary of 9 11 . It is the heroes, the men that went up into the building. You just spoke about a band of brothers. I dont think theres a day that goes by that i havent had a conversation with somebody that i worked from that day. That you know, made it out alive. I mean, recently, i was talking to a firefighter, terry rivera, from ladder ten. It was his first fire. He was a navy corpsman. And he had just returned back to the Href='https://vimarsana.com/news/fire-house'>Fire House that morning when he went out and it was at that fire. I think of people like Tim Brown who randal into Href='https://vimarsana.com/news/terry-hatton'>Terry Hatton from rescue coming tHrough. They met and they were best friends. They met right in the middle of the lobby. And Href='https://vimarsana.com/news/jules-camera'>Jules Camera is actually on them. And he went over and that, i dont know if well see each other again. And they hugged and them, i and they all perished up there. Tim was in the collapse of the Href='https://vimarsana.com/news/south-tower'>South Tower and found himself Buryed Alife within the lobby of the marriott hotel, and then dug himself out and took ten people along with him and rescued. And i think if the Href='https://vimarsana.com/news/people-today'>People Today watching the film realized that there are people that walk around them every day that did, you know, just, you know, extraordinary things, and you know, thats one of the reasons why we made the documentary to begin with. We wanted to show what it was like to be, you know, a first responder and put your life on the line every day. I hope people can watch the film, and see these great men for who they were, you know, and their legacy as you mentioned earlier, live on. I think so many of us still feel the emotions that many of us felt 20 years ago, and it is a very raw, very gripping film, and it really does capture the Href='https://vimarsana.com/news/bravery-and-heroism'>Bravery And Heroism of everyone involved. My entire career has been spent with a conflict in afghanistan and to see it come to an end, that does make a mark i think. Reporter pelbath knew time was precious. Every second on the tarmac was added risk and the final troops loading up the danger at its pick. Major donahue the last soldier to step off afghan soil. Pelpath snapped this picture. He gave the order, clam shell, close the cargo doors. Minutes later the order to takeoff. I was able to see the first aircraft made their left turn the second behind them. The third aircraft lifted off. The fourth aircraft the entire picture of the Href='https://vimarsana.com/news/c17-force'>C17 Force in front of me for sure an image i will never forget. Reporter the five c17s On The Ground a total of tHree hours, The End of a 20year war was his final flight. Part of what made this so special for the Href='https://vimarsana.com/news/lieutenant-colonel'>Lieutenant Colonel is that his own grandparents were on a u. S. Evacuation flight they lived in hungary and fled to austria in 1957, removed in 1957 as part of Operation Safe Haven and that made this very personal for pelbath. I asked him at The End if he had any thoughts. He said this isnt just the credit of one person or any individual.
