A study shows more children have needed Emergency Room visits and hospitalizations in states with lower Vaccination Rates. In other words, Adults Refusal to get vaccinated is hurting and potentially killing innocent children who have no choice, no option for protection. Washington Vaccine Mandate for teachers and staff goes into effect next month. In florida, School Districts are defying their own governor doubling down on school mandates that fly in face of the governors ban. Masking does help while we wait for the next line of defense. Covid19 booster shots, but the exact timing has been a subject of debate. Its Up In The Air right now. Lets get to dr. Anthony fauci. You have said the 20th is still in play. Help us sort this out. Where are we headed when it comes to boosters and when is that going to get up and running . Well, jim, the plan had been in really still remain in place that by the week of september 20th, we would get the Booster Program for both the pfizer and the moderna products operational. We had always said from the very beginning that would depend on a few factors that would have to be in play. One that the companies would submit to the fda the appropriate information to allow the regulatory approach of that to be the way it should be. The fda would make a recommendation which you would follow because they are the last word in the regulatory aspect of all of this. The Advisory Committee advise the cdc would recommend it. What has happened is that pfizer, one of the companies that had the mrna has gotten the information and been examined and things look like they are ready to go. Moderna might be a bit behind that. If they are, what you might see is rather than the simultaneous Rolling Out of the Booster Program of both those products, i dont think that is a major issue there but we would have like to have seen it happen all together simultaneously. Can you Mix And Match or is it better to wait . Its better to wait. We are looking at Mix And Match studies now. Well have all the necessary information in a few weeks. It may not be exactly on the week of september 20th. It will be very soon thereafter. Okay. A lot of people out there trying to diy this as you may understand. The Surgeon General said the threshold for boosters was significant Increase And Breakthrough infections and hospitalizations and deaths. Is there evidence of significant increase in these Breakthrough Hospitalizations and deaths and can you pointtous that evidence . Are you seeing that . You look at the evidence from the cohorts here in the United States. Theres No Doubt theres a diminution of the efficacy of the vaccine in infection. Theres a slight suggestion in a couple of the cohorts that its true for diminution of protection against hospitalization. Not profound but the suggestion when you look at the data is there. However, when you lookt at the israeli data and they are about a month or so in every aspect of us in the vaccination, boosters, et cetera. The data is theres a substantial diminution in protection against infection and unquestionable diminution in the protection against hospitalization. The good news, jim, is that when they boosted people, they had a dramatic and profound increase in the protection against infection as well as protection against hospitalization. Their data shows were going in the right direction of where we need to go with regard to boosters. The data also show that when you give those boosters, you reconstitute to an even higher level than before the protection against both infection and hospitalization. Why are we waiting in the u. S. Until eight Months. . A lot of people in the u. S. Thought we would get it after six Months. Good question, jim. The plan for the Roll Out was at the september 20th, the week of september 20th. That would actually be about eight Months from the time the very first people in this country got their vaccinations in january. Thats the issue. We had said and we continue to abide by it that the ultimate implementation will be according to the regulatory aspect of the fda and the recommendations of the Advisory Committee and immunization practices. Although the plan for eight Months is still there, were still planning to do that, there may be a range of time when the recommendations are being made. I dont think theres a situation that it is now immutable that we may not be able to change it but we are still planning for eight Months. Dr. Fauci, let me get out of the weeds a bit and ask some plain spoken questions here. Are we in a situation now where we need the boosters or necessary because so many people chose to go unvaccinated . Well isnt that the case to some extent . To some extent thats indirect. We need the boost because ultimately it may turn out, jim, that the ultimate proper immunization regimen is a three dose regimen. Remember, we made it a two dose regimen. We were dealing with an emergent situation. We needed to get those vaccines out because they were life saving. In fact, they have been life saving. What were observing now not only here in the United States but in other countries, including israel and the uk, that the durability of the protection tends to wane particularly in the context of the Delta Variant. The good news is the boosters really jack up the response very high. We hope that that response would be durable. Getting back to your question, is that when you have unvaccinated people, you have a dynamic of Virus Replication and transmission in the community which is not only not good for the people who are unvaccinated but indirectly it may ultimately be detrimental to the unvaccinated people. The best thing that we could have is the overwhelming majority of the population get vaccinated. That would unquestionably bring the level of virus so low in the community that you would not only see unvaccinated people who are vaccinated now protected but the people who are originally vaccinated would not have as many breakthrough infections. Because of the people getting vaccinated. Let me ask you about something else related to this shuffling patients around to create space. I know you heard about this. In texas, it was reported the other day that u. S. Army Vet Couldnt be treated for Panc Pancreatitis because the hospital was full. Is it time to start prioritizing. Are we going to get into a situation where you cant have hospitals full of unvaccinated people or we at a position for that . I dont think well get there. Theres talk of that. What we really should be doing and i hope we are doing it, is to do everything we can to mitigate this number of people who are getting infect and requiring hospitalizations and icu beds. We have perilously close, as you mentioned, In The Beginning of the segment of having in certain area of the country getting so close to have Fulling Occupancy that youre going to be in a situation where you have to make tough choices. The thing to do right now is to pull out all the stops on everything we can do to prevent new infections. Try to push back against mask mandates. M it doesnt make any sense. Covid cases are at unprecedented levels among children in in parts of the country. Hospitalization rates are higher in states with lower Vaccination Rates. This correlation between the lower Vaccination Rates and all these Public Health problems. There are kids that cant get vaccinated and being impacted by parents making the bad choices. What can we do to protect the children in these low Vaccination Areas that rending are ending up in the hospital . The way you protect children who because of their age cannot get vaccinated yet is to surround the children, be it friends, family, school, teachers, personnel in the school, surround the children with vaccinated people. In the School System, thats the reason why the cdc recommends the using of masks in the School System even when there are many, many vaccinated people. Weve got to protect the children. If we want to keep them physically in school, present in school, we got to do everything we can to protect them from getting infected. As i mentioned, thats getting people around them vaccinated and wearing masks. We know youre monitoring the new variant, for give me if im not pronouncing it correctly. Hard to keep up with the variants. Is this variant going to be more problematic than the Delta Variant which has ban real Game Changer when it comes to this pandemic . We are watching the new variant closely. There are isolates of the new variant in this country. The thing telling us it isnt an immediate zu right now is the Delta Variant continues to be profoundly dominant in this country. More than 99 of the isolates in this country are delta. Delta seems to be pushing out all the other variants. That doesnt mean were not keeping an eye out on the new variant and taking it seriously. We dont see it as an immediate threat right now. I want to you about some of the problems with disinformation that were having now. You had a debunk misinformation coming from high places throughout the pandemic. Some of the latest foxs, Tucker Carlson has been defending counterfeit vaccine cards. Lets watch a bit of that. Buying a fake Vaccination Card is an act of desperation by decent lawabiding american who is have been forced into a corner by tyrants. You know whats a serious crime . Forcing americans to take drugs they dont need or want. Thats a very serious crime. Lets hope in the End Someone is punished for it, severely. The Podcast Host Joe Rogan came down with covid. He says hes been taking the Livestock Dewormer as well as other treatments that people talk about on the internet and doesnt have any effect on covid. Other public Health Expert who is are out there and isnt that part of the problem . Well, jim, Disinformation And Misinformation is really a very serious issue when it comes to a public Health Issue like covid19 in which its essential to get correct information out both for people who are infected and who do need proper medication and proper care to foster things that are unproven right from the beginning as always been a problem. The pesbest way to counter Disinformation And Misinformation is to try as best as we all can to get the proper and correct information out but one of the enemies of Public Health is disinformation and unfortunately, we do see that in some corners. Let me ask you, lets talk about the covid End Game in the u. S. Is the goal zero spread or is it to minimize severe disease . Those are two different goals. What do you think . First thing is to get out of the pandemic mode. We are in pandemic mode. Thats a lot of infections. We have got to get it way, way down first. That doesnt mean you have eliminated it completely and never see another infection but it means its at such a low level that we need to get back to the kind of normality that we all crave. Theres multiple stages in what you want to do. The first thing we have to do, we cant be having 150,000 new infections per day. Thats pandemic numbers. Thats first thing we have to crack down right away. Yeah. Do you think and we have to quickly wrap this up, but do you think its possible that were just not going get over this in the near future . I know you talked about early next year. It seems like at this rate, that seems like wishful thinking. I think its entirely feasible if we really put a full Court Press on the vaccination and get those 75 or so million people who have not yet gotten vaccinated that are eligible. If we can get them vaccinated in the menext month or so, i thinke can crush the numbers low. Its up to us. Its our choice. If we want to get the numbers really down, we can do it. I hope youre right.
