Laughter as wonderful place to go for forgetting your troubles and woes. Sitcoms are an escape. The more dire the circumstances, the more you need sitcoms to forget about your troubles. Were going to the good place. In a Frickin Gold Balloon shotgun thats what we had. Thats what helped me escape being poor. Every single one of you is a good person. When im feeling kind of hopeless and sad, i get to laugh and lose myself and remember, lifes not that bad. Youre in the good place. The beautiful thing about the sitcom is that it has provided so much joy in times of uncertainty. Theres pressure, new products, everything being new, this brave new world. Everythings about the future and modernizing. Yes, its all bright and shiny, you get cars that look like spaceships. But then its a scary thing. What does the future hold . Flint steins was a modern stone age family, if you recall. Celebrated the modern family in a stone age setting. It was like time Travel Fantasy for us watching. Almost done with the dishes . Just cant wait until i invent the faucet. With all the progress happening in the late 50s and 60s, The Flintstones is an escape from the pressures of the modern family. And the question, is progress good . It was kind of a satire on this consumerism. Get the newest thing for your kitchen. Get the newest car with these kind of stone wheels. They have a car that has wheels but you need your legs to make it move. I bet that is how they did it. A lot of people think it was cartoon on saturdays. That was a Network Sitcom that happened to be animated. Im 7 years old, my mom used to get furious, shaking angry at me, for watching The Flintstones. Because its really a show for adults. I was so sad for betty and the fact that they couldnt have children. Were so anxious to have a baby, we take it out on fred and wilma. They talk about adopting. Thats unusual. We want to do everything according to law, maam. That had not been heard before. It was a smash hit. The flintstones was on for six years. Yahoo youre the greatest, fred. It was really on the Cutttin Edge of escapism for an american audience that was hungry for it. The communist rulers of East Berlin reinforced their barricades. In the early and mid60s, theres so much turmoil in terms of the civil rights movement, in terms of vietnam. Theres a real crisis of identity. And there is a pattern in american entertainment, of when things get really serious, weve got to get silly. I just dont understand it. Dont try to. Its bigger than both of us. People just needed to escape and go watch a talking horse. Come on, man, cut it out. Not until you call the police. My mother the car, this Guys Car was haunted shlgs his mother is haunting the car. Its about a car, and its a mother, were in hell. The Flying Nun was probably the silliest show ever made. I suppose thats true, in a way. I wanted to be a nun when i grew up. Hey, i think im getting the hang of this. I knew i couldnt be a Flying Nun. I knew i couldnt be a nun, either. In the 1960s, most successful sitcoms were just fun and over the top and silly. You laughed because someone else is falling on the banana peel. And that is the essence of escapism. Thats why Theres Something really deeply appealing in this idea of being able to just shake off the shackles of civilization and start all over again. Just sit right back and youll hear a tale a tale of a fateful trip that started from a tale, a tale of a fateful trip . Started as something or other . Do you know it . You probably know it better than i do. When i watch Gilligans Island, i put myself on the island with gilligan. A bunch of crazy people that get stranded on the island, no surprise there. I always felt so bad for them. Like, are they ever going to get off that island . My father had this idea, how do i get seven people and put them together so they cant get away from Each Other . People of different types. So he went to cbs, and Jim Aubrey was the president , and he tried to sell them the show. Jim aubrey didnt see how viewers would understand why these people are there. So dad went home that night and he wrote the theme song. For a Threehour Tour then Gilligans Island went on the air. You know, they could make a latrine, they could make huts, they could make radio receivers, they could make a cinema complex. A raft was beyond their capability. The critics hated it, thought it was the worst show ever. Everybody said, this is the stupidest Plot Weve seen, this isnt going to last five minutes. We havent been off the air for 50 years. We may have to stay here for a long, long time. I remember laughing so hard at gilligan and skipper, somehow were bald . Look at us, our heads look like a couple of cantaloupes. I just laughed. I think i was happy i knew what a cantaloupe was. Neither a Marianne Fan nor a ginger fan. I was too into ginger, ive got to be honest. I think im a marianne guy. Marianne or ginger . I had the hots for the professor. Hes got a point there. I love Gilligans Island. To me it was actually really smart. My dad wanted to create a M Microcosm of society. He wanted the skipper to be leadership. Mr. Howell to be capitalism. The professor to be intellectual. Ginger to be vanity. Does intelligence keep us afloat . Does money keep us afloat . Ive been scuttled there were no black people on Gilligans Island. Thats the fantasy of The American ideal. The island is a metaphor for the earth. A lot of the contemporary events and threats we can say from nuclear annihilation its coming right this way to political conflicts, like the cuba missile crisis. Somehow wind up being reflected in the adventures on the island. With all the Turmoil And Everything that was going on in the world then, it was an escape for everybody. And it made you happy. I would like a world without strife, universal harmony, international good will, where the spirit of brotherhood enriches all of mankind forever, thank you. I think it taught a lesson. Seven completely different people, raised differently, different values, really trying to get along. And we did. Gilligan, for a guy whos always doing dumb things, when you do something smart, its beautiful. Does your deodorant keep you fresh all day . We put dove Men Deodorant to the test with nelson, a volunteer that puts care into everything he does. It really protects my skin. Its comfortable and lasts a long time. Dove men, 48h Freshness with triple action moisturizers. BoosT Mobile is all about giving you more power. And now, we give you more power over your health. He doesnt have a workspace. The Chevy Silverado with the available multiflex tailgate. Find new adventures. Find new roads. Chevrolet. Theres something funny going on around here. With what was going on in the world in 1965 with u. S. Versus russia, Get Smart was lampooning the terror that we had from the cold war. It was a great way to escape the par paranoia. Chaos has a nuclear bomb. Doesnt everybody . Loved Get Smart. I wanted to be don adams. Da Da Da Da Da Da Da Da Da Da Da Da Da Da Da Da Da Da you wanted to be home at 7 30 to watch him get in that phone booth. Get smart was a direct satire of james bond, which was the biggest thing in movies. Bond. James bond. And we, you know, we satirized the blank out of it. Allow me, princess. Hes doing cool spy stuff. Hes got the phone and the shoe. I will take credit for the shoe phone. Which turned out to be the Cell Phone. Which i should have patented, and i wouldnt even be bothered talking to you. One of the most famous gags on Get Smart was the Cone Of Silence. The case i assign 99 to has to do with the gal formula. What . The Chief And Agent 86 couldnt actually hear Each Other. The Cone Of Silence would never work, and it would never work in a different way every time. It was too fast. It wouldnt come down. It would hit the desk. A lot of the Catch Phrases are part of our culture. I loved when max would say sorry about that, chief. Sorry about that, chief. Missed it by that much. Nuts missed me by that much. Twice. Would you believe . I should be able to rip these chains from the wall in one minute. Would you believe it . One minute. I find that hard to believe. Would you believe two minutes . Every job he was given, he totally failed. And agent 99 would help him out. She was sharp. Minuscule. Diminutive. Microcosmic. You certainly have a way with words, 99. Teensyweensy. I loved 99. Just the look on her face . That was sort of like, is that what you really mean . I know the sound of a. 38 special and i counted six shots. Youre making a terrible mistake. Youre the one with the. 38 special, max. Barbara felden rolling her eyes at the camera was her feminist statement on Get Smart. Get smart didnt preach about the world at all. There were never direct references to what we should think about what was going on in the 60s. What was subversive about Get Smart in framing what was going on in the world in such broad strokes was that if you, the smart viewer, wanted to attach meaning to it, you could see messages in it. Once youre laughing, you forget everything, you know . Laughter is a wonderful diversion from thinking about death. Its airing in the 60s at the pinnacle of the vietnam war. Its when your marines are being sent off to vietnam, and vietnamese prison camps. You could see, like, dead bodies on the news every night. And so the idea that you could then escape with a show like Gomer Pyle was appealing because people didnt want to think of the military in solely negative terms. Thats not our history in america. There was definitely a feeling like, lets have a guy whos almost like a throwback to the old g. I. In the cartoons. Golly golly, golly, golly, golly, golly. Well, golly golly, thats what happened to your car. Gomer pyle was many things but it was not in any way reflective of vietnam. I have to listen to his Big Mouth every day, i have to pay for his meals every night. This is worse than being married what we couldnt watch was Gomer Pyle because my mother said there were enough idiots in the world without people acting like idiots. Looks like were going to need those life preservers. Pranks and fun. Pure escapism. An escape . Thats a good one. Hogans heros was set in World War ii. But it debuted in the midst of the vietnam war. Heil heil hogans heroes, imagine that pitch. Guys, listen to this, its going to be great lets do a sitcom about a nazi Prisoner Of War im just spitballing here im thinking, nazis, men trapped without Running Water im in my dad and i used to watch hogans heroes together and laugh, laugh, laugh. Hogan Hogan You see, hogan, never underestimate your enemy. I see nothing i see nothing, i was not here, i did not even get up this morning this is airing when there are many americans trapped in vietnamese prison camps. Which are not a very funny thing to think about. Television was like, if we come up with really broad ideas that are very full of slapstick comedy, people will want to gravitate to that. You know, where did that come from . And with that you get to release all that angst. And with that comes humor. It is attacking humor is always an inversion. Its always, can we find what is ironic about this situation in some way . Colonel hogan, Colonel Hogan Kissing Prisoners is verboten thankfully we have a sitcom as a medium for this, its an escape. If you dont laugh, goddammit, youre going to try. The new York City area blacked out last night. Courtordered busing remains one of the most emotionally charged issues in this country. The search for gas becomes an every other day ordeal. When youre looking at the 70s, there was a lot of, lets not think about that complicated stuff right now, lets make it go away. The Love Boat was the ultimate in fluff. Love, exciting and new love, exciting I Cant go that low. Come aboard were expecting you yeah you know the song. Were expecting you Love Boat the Love Boat. Makes you smile, doesnt it . My agent called me and said, how about a thing called the Love Boat . Sounds great. People joked abc stood for aarons broadcasting company. Aaron spelling just he had a touch. The plane, the plane for knowing what the audience wanted to see. The Love Boat. Sitcom or not a sitcom . Sitcom. Love boat was a new format for a sitcom. I think the Love Boat is a sitcom. Love boat was not a sitcom, no. To me the Love Boat was a sitcom. It expanded what we thought of as a sitcom. All i know is, it was a hit. It was usually comprised of three storylines. One would be a pure comic story. One would be a medilodramatic story. How do you tell the lady that you love shes never going to walk 15 . One would be a romantic comedy. Im just a bartender, youre a star. They used a laugh track, which was never really done, especially in an hour filmed show. Dont worry about your termites, lady. Because when your house falls, it will kill them. It had laughs but they werent laughlaughs. I think a lot of them were pushed in there. You look like you want to dance. Well, not exactly oh, yeah. Outrageous. She was so free. Jeepers creepers coulkootchiekootchie i was on the Love Boat four or five times. What are you gawking at . Well, i guess i didnt expect to see so much of West Virginia out here in the middle of the ocean. When i watch the Love Boat now, i really often marvel at how wrong some of those plots are. And ill be back with your prescription. I mean, its practically a Cave Man beating the woman over the head, dragging her back to his cabin. Hi. Times have changed. Now the Ships Doctor could not sleep with a passenger. The Love Boat provided an escapist experience in a literal sense of the word, because you could feel like you were on a cruise, escaping your life. Entertainment has changed. Everything has changed. But Human Beings are still Human Beings. People want happy endings. They need happy endings. Bye bye we gave it to them every saturday. In 1977, abc was pure es escapism. It was a formula that really ensured success. Aw, come on, dont take it so seriously. Abc was flying high with happy days, laverne shirley, the Six Million dollar man, the bionic woman. Abc could do no wrong. And Eight Is Enough was part of that era. Theres a magic in the early morning the premise of Eight Is Enough is a man, tom bradford, has eight children. He, of course, has a wife. But that wife passed away. He falls in love again. The kids, still grieving the mother, now have to deal with this other woman. Abby and i are getting married to Each Other. We were the evolution of the brady bunch. Oh, come on, lighten up, theyll never know if we break a rule or two. Yeah, whos going to tell them . You wouldnt squeal, would you . Much like the Love Boat, it was a dromedy, it was a longiform show. Why dont you ground her for missing dinner . We know where nancy is, we didnt know where you were. I was eating pizza. There were many things on the show i thought were complete fantasy. A family that sits down and discusses things, really . I want to know what youre going to do about tommy, hes got a party Saturday Night and hes still a kid. Why dont you mind your own business . Eight is enough was a return to something that seemed maybe safe . You look at the era and whats going on, divorce rates soaring in the 70s, right . The family is breaking apart. Im 8, i can understand complicated things. Nicholas, women are weird, thats all. Now move. In the late 70s, the world had just come out of this incredible Revolution And Anger and everybodys looking for Chewing Gum for the eyes. All of a sudden its like, lets just watch a family thats working. Lets watch a family that probably doesnt exist outside of this box. We fill our lives with love men put their skin through a lot. Dayin, dayout. Thats why dove Men Body Wash is new and improved with skinstrengthening nutrients and moisturizers. That help rebuild your skin with every shower. Door Closes Door Closes excited Laughter Ahhh Ohhhh Fridge Closing Crowd Noises cheering laughter there is growing evidence the nations crack Cocaine Epidemic is taking a major turn. In 1981 the number of crimes reported to the new York City Police Department reached a record high. In the early 80s, New York was a dangerous place. A lot of crime. A lot of conflict. People versus cohen, Disturbing The Peace and assault. I cant be held accountable when the serial force violently expelled the essence from my body. Night court consciously avoided the realities of life in New York and said, lets not be so serious. What Night Court was doing was presenting a very happyfaced version of what you would see if you went to a Night Court in manhattan. Deanda did nothing of her own will, it is my doing Night Court was more about the humor of the people involved. Do you believe in all this higher Consciousness Stuff . Huh . The whole point of it was, very weird people come into this building every day. See ya later do you have anything to say . Ill be brief. The characters were not dangerous and the crimes were usually very minimal. What she going to do, spank you . The prosecutor, the loveable asshole, if i can say that. Jealous . Hey, guys, Take A Look at this. Marshal, one of the funniest women ever. You see her . A little water might help that grow. Night court was all escapism. Mr. Shea is an amateur magician, your honor. Night court is a way to get america to pivot from the actual nose. You know thats not necessarily the reality of the situation, but thats why its called tv magic. Even successful magicians sometimes spend lifetimes fruitlessly trying to develop Night Court takes this gritty aspect of the city and gives you a sunnier version of it. Newhart happened at the same time and is an interesting parallel with Night Court. Newhart, hes looking for an escape from New York, and he goes to an idealized place which is in vermont. There it is. The stratford. In the first Bob Newhart show, bob was married to suzanne and he was a therapist. Bob newharts second series, he was married to mary fran. I like it. No, you dont. I thought maybe the second show should be about an inn. Thats really up there, isnt it . Uh, what . Nature. In the flesh. If youd like, i can introduce you to maud. Im convinced that the Reason Bob Newhart is excruciatingly funny to me was because of his deep sensitivity. In a sense, the thwarted decency. I miss you more than you miss me. I do too. I do too i do too he does, okay . Bob newhart thrives as a comedian when surrounded by eccentric people. Dick, i got rid of that clog in the vent. Oh, good, george. What was it . I dont know, but when i woke it up, it ran off. In vermont, they were able to surround him with really outstandingly creative characters. Hi. Im larry. This is my brother darrell. Thats my other brother darrell. They loved larry, darrell, and darrell. Throwed my back out last week crawling under a house. Sounds like a tough job. Wasnt a job, i just like crawling under houses. The most iconic Sitcom Finale of alltime is the finale of newhart. Ive got to get out of this madhouse it was very difficult to keep from getting out. To do the finale of the show, people dont know. Bob newhart Fed A Fake Story to the papers. I told the cast what was going to happen. I didnt tell the crew. We said, weve added a scene, just keep shooting. Honey honey, wake up you wont believe the dream i just had. She throws back the covers and its suzanne plachette. Suzanne was snuck into the sound stage. All right, bob. What is it . I was an innkeeper in this crazy Little Town in vermont we just watched nine years of a dream. It managed to tie both shows up with a bow. And it is probably the most escapist example of a sitcom series finale. Can your longwear do this . Superstay active Wear Foundation from maybelline New York. Defies transfer. And water. Full coverage. Up to 30hr Wear Superstay Foundation maybelline New York. BoosT Mobile is all about giving you more power. And now, we give you more power over your health. Ask your doctor about dovatoi did. We know how good it feels to be with our families. How it warms and comforts us. How it gives us strength and joy. During the reagan era, there was this emphasis on being a good person. D. J. , were still a family. And now is when we really need to stick together. In the late 80s, after Eight Is Enough, there was all these really squishy, softfocus families. Like full house. At that time the Family Sitcom is almost like a disney movie. Honey, i told you, everything is going to work out super great. Youve got it, dude. It puts pressure on american families to live Up To some ideal that has not existed in decades if it ever existed before. The economys starting to tank. Were at war. Were not going to live better than our parents. But when The Simpsons come along, they kind of blow that apart. The simpsons The Simpsons is escapist because no matter how much of a Couch Potato you are or how underachieving your children are, theyre not going to be as bad as The Simpsons. I thought id investigate the effects of Cigarette Smoking on dogs. I think its really hard for people who werent alive then to understand how controversial it was. Uh, yes, im looking for a mrs. O, first name bea. Extremely disrespectful. Come on, guys, do i have a Bea Problem here . I remember the impression of, children are never allowed to speak like that. What is going on there . I think barts stupid again, mom. Hm. Im a fan of The Simpsons. Theres no show that does the high Joke Density better. Well, im my own toughest critic, but i think its genius. That story telling on The Simpsons was so unlike anything that had come with it. Ornate, baroque stories. They could have a Threesecond Scene at a nuclear reactor, then jump somewhere else. Endlessly clever. So many good character on this The Simpsons. Bob casts a long shadow through The Universe, hes a great villain. His relationship with a rake destroyed him. Tracy, what are you doing here . Youre all better. Nobody tells me these things when The Simpsons came out, it was a massive hit. Could this be the best day of my life . Hee Hee Hee ha ha ha The Simpsons helped usher in this modern era of adult animation. Hey, brian, whats up . Is animation necessarily an escapist form . Obviously visually youre looking at something usually more colorful than your actual life. You can be risky and obscene and transgressive and really, really dig into humor that other shows are kind of afraid to touch. Ive been so bloody naughty, i need to be taught a lesson and youre the one to do it gaaghhh pushing those barriers. It is wrong to eat Human Beings. Says you. South park took that a whole leap further. Oh my god they killed kenny you bastards they make bart seem like beaver cleaver. Hey, wendy. Sup, bitch . In the 90s we see the rise of the concept of political correctness. Audiences were looking for an escape from that. Creators matt Stone And Trey parker showed the power and the comedy that you could find in being politically incorrect. Right, looks like we have 2. 4 inches, really nice, butters. Im hung like a horse i think of an animated show like South Park and its full of comments about modern subjects. I had a sex change operation, my Pechlt Enis is a vagina and im experiencing womanhood for the first time in my life. See you in class it would push the envelope in a strange way, but in The Voice of a child. Jesus was black, Ronald Reagan is the devil, and the government is lying about 9 11 The Boon Docks were the black South Park. Dived into the subset of the black community maybe white people dont see at all. These character that is arent human, they get to say things that people might be afraid to say. Ow i told you, you better not even dream about telling white folk the truth. One of the most hilarious episodes was martin Luther King coming back and seeing how black people were living and really being shocked. About what he saw. I had a dream once. But lo and behold, some four decades later, what have i found . But a bunch of trifling, shiftless, Good For Nothing [ bleep ]. So whether its about racist white folks, whether its about black folks being problematic with themselves and the outlook on life, the boondocks is not pulling any punches. One thing for sure, Cant Blame this on the white man. What am i saying . Of course i can. But when i was a kid, my top sitcom was probably dinosaurs. It was bonkers. Everything the jim Hansen Company does is escapist. Hey oh, thats great. The original idea was all really generated in the year that my father, jim henson, passed away in 1990. And he just liked the idea of dinosaurs who live so irresponsibly, they will inevitably go extinct. There will inevitably be casualties. What my dad loved about sitcom is they could do something powerful. What the show actually was, was always a warning. It sounds like wed be declaring war on nature. Exactly yes, dinosaurs had very good 90sstyle, lets Take Care of the earth Climate Change messaging. You destroyed the global food chain, no plants means no food at all the finale of dinosaurs is really and truly one of the best finales for any Television Show ever. We killed them all. Are we going to move . Well no. Theres no place to move to. We always knew that that irresponsible treatment of the environment in dinosaurs had to destroy the planet. And because it was puppetry, because they werent Human Beings spouting at you, you tolerated it. Se the jar. To gelato made from scratch. Raise the jar to all five layers. Raise the jar to the best gelato. Youve ever tasted. Talenti. Raise the jar. At Pnc Bank, we believe in the power of the watch out. The make way, coming through. Great. The storm alert. Dad. Its one way were making a difference. Because we believe how you handle overdrafts should be in your control, not just your banks. Low Cash Mode on virtual wallet from Pnc Bank. How do things look on your end . Perfect because were building a better network every single day. How do you exist in a world thats built to reward the worse people. The world is changing. We are in a point now in comedy where people need to continue to push boundaries. All animation presents a Brightly Colorful World thats more interesting than our own. The better way to make us face, the way in our reality is particularly let down. Well, thats a long series of regrettable life choices. What did you say . Bojack horseman is netflixs animated comedy thats set in hollywood in which talking animals coexist with humans. Are you drunk . I weigh over 1200 pounds. It takes a lot of beers to get me drunk. What if mr. Ed Type End Ed u becoming the dad in a full housestyle sitcom. Hwe are horsing around. Oh, hes a washed up sitcom star. Party at my house tonight. Hes turned into this kind of alcoholic depressed and still rich formal lyfely famous actor. Nothing is more like a party Oh Bojack is so good. It sucks you into that it is an an animated show that these are talking animals. Bojack is harder than hollywood than anything i equivalent in live comedies.
