Are in New Jersey and at least 4. 5 million people are still under Flood Warnings at this hour as swollen rivers continue to present a danger to so many residents. Weve already seen thousands of people in multiple states being rescued from the high waters. Millions of others are now beginning to clean up the debris, clearing out their flooded basements, trying to move downed trees, many of them off of their cars. Lets get the very latest, what it looks like today with cnns polo sandoval. Hes live in one Hardhit Community in New Jersey. Hey there, polo. Reporter hey, kate. Some of the hardest work is just getting started for so many residents here in New Jersey. Weve driven and walked these streets and you see those scenes weve seen in the past with other similar incidents where you have people putting out their belongings that were destroyed out on the curb and then there were some that lost their homes altogether. You see the house behind me or what was left of the house behind me. The local Fire Superintendent said it was a recipe for disaster when you had all of this neighborhood just completely flooded yesterday, causing an electrical short in the building, combining with the gas that had potentially leaked inside the home. The result was a massive explosion. Fortunately, though, the house was empty and nobody was hurt. There are at least three other structures in this city alone that also were destroyed in a similar way so it really does speak to what happened in the days after the storm just dumped a tremendous amount of rain. Accessing some of these communities yesterday, it was extremely challenging. The Fire Superintendent telling me the geography of communities like this basically makes it an island when their nearby river and surrounding waterways are so swollen that they have to shut down bridges. So getting help in and perhaps injured out was proving to be quite a challenge. When it comes here to manville, New Jersey, no injuries to report, just complete and widespread devastation when it comes to several homes. Even some of the local government buildings werent spared. This is just a snapshot of what many other families are having to deal with throughout parts of the northeast. Of course some lost people theyll never see again. Absolutely. Gosh, just looking at whats behind you, polo, its pretty unbelievable. Every image is harder to watch than the next. Well keep checking back with polo in New Jersey. Lets go to pennsylvania right now. I mean pennsylvania has been under water. Look at some of these images. The governor has been giving updates. Will continue to be giving updates on the situation there. In philadelphia, including a major expressway, so much of it remains under water due to the catastrophic flooding. Just look at that. Pete muntean is live in ft. Washington, pennsylvania, which is just north of philly with the very latest. Pete, what are you seeing there now . Reporter kate, we know that flooding hit the Philly Area hard, but Governor Tom Wolf is about to tour the damage here. We were in ft. Washington, montgomery county. Of four statewide deaths, three happened here in montgomery county. One here in ft. Washington when a tree fell on a home and killed a woman on the second floor. Its all from an Ef2 Tornado that came barreling through. It started to the south of a neighborhood, came through the Township Building and Police Department here. This is the roof, which was peeled off the top like a tuna can. The tornado continued for the High School where it peeled the roof off of the pool there. In fact there was a dumpster there, but they still cant find it. It disappeared. Just to give you an idea of how powerful the winds are here. About four minutes of warning for all of this. The Fire Chief tells me it changed the town forever. You know, flooding continues to be an issue in the philadelphia area. About 30 major roads closed in the fivecounty region according to the Pennsylvania Department of transportation. Most notably as you mentioned on the way in, the vine street expressway, a major artery, straight through center city, philadelphia, is still covered with water. Penndot says late Last Night it brought in a fifth Water Pump to try to get all of that water out and back into the schuylkill river, but after all of the water is out, a big process ahead. They are going to have to clear off all of the debris and then assess the roadbed to make sure that people can drive on it again soon. The worst part is weve already lost two rush hours to that here in philadelphia and its made the driving in the region especially bad. We are only just now getting a picture of how bad this cleanup will really be, kate. I can only imagine what people trying to get to work is like in philly because of all of that. Thank you, Pete Association much. Really appreciate it. Lets go to wilmington, delaware, where we saw some incredible Water Rescues in that city amid the historic flooding from ida. Joining me for an update is the mayor of wilmington. Mayor, thanks for coming on. We saw so much video during my hours, during our Show Yesterday of the widespread flooding in wilmington and so many Water Rescues. What is the Update Today . Kate, the Update Today is weve not had loss of life. Weve not had serious injury. We had about A Hundred people ferried out of districts that were heavily impacted by the flooding. But were generally grateful about the condition of Wilmington Given what has happened in philadelphia, very close neighbors, and over in South Jersey where they had those horrible tornados. We didnt experience that and weve been able to recover. I think well be in good condition in fairly short order. Obviously i was ankle deep in mud all morning walking around in our neighborhoods trying to assess the damage. But i think were going to be in pretty good shape. Thats great to hear. I have to say i have been struck by how many people have been describing really the same thing, how fast the water came in, how little time that they had to get to safety. But as you mentioned in your city, you dont believe that you even have a single death to report so far. I mean what do you attribute that to . As you know, so many other cities were not so lucky. Thats true. I think its just luck. Its luck where the flooding hit the most. I was with one of our commercial residents who have been here since 1972 and they said the water has never come near the building. Today they had four feet of water, so its just where its where the impact of the storm hit us. We have two rivers, christina and the brandywine. The brandywine is generally the more benign of the two. This time the brandywine is where all the damage took place, in places that had never flooded before. So, you know, we had some luck but we had remarkable responses by our first responders. The Community All came together, as i think happens so often, you see communities pull together and do a great job helping one another. Watching their expertise on live tv, watching the expertise of those highWater Rescues is really something to behold. President biden is visiting Louisiana Today to have a look at the aftermath of ida there. Wilmington is his hometown. Have you heard from the White House . Do you expect him to tour the damage in your city . No, i dont. We try not to take advantage of the relationship with the president. He is overly solicitous of us when need be and theres no reason for us to call him this time. But he gives us his personal number if things get bad enough, were free to call him. Mayor, its good to meet you. Thank you for coming in. All right, kate. At this hour President Biden is on his way to louisiana, as i mentioned, to get a firsthand look at the destruction from Hurricane Ida. The storm is blamed for at least 13 deaths in louisiana and mississippi. Food distribution sites opening up around the new Orleans Area as more and more people are running out of food and so more and more people needs to line up to get food, to get water and other necessities. Gas is also in short supply and it seems its getting harder and harder. Nearly twothirds of the stations in Baton Rouge and New Orleans have no fuel. Arlette saenz joins me with more on this. Arlette, im listing out all of the things the president is going to be seeing and you know that people in louisiana are going to want him to see those fuel lines, the food shortage, the fact that the power is still not on. What is the goal for the White House in heading down there . You dont want it to just be a photo op. Reporter thats right, kate. President biden is heading down to the new Orleans Area with a message of support both on the federal Resources Level and on that basic personal level as well, as so many people in the region appear that they will be impacted by this storm for quite some time. Now, the president is set to spend about six hours on the ground in the new Orleans Area. Hell be meeting with local officials, including the States Governor Bel Edwards and the president is also planning on getting a firsthand look at that storm damage. He will be on the ground touring one of the parishes that was impacted by this hurricane, and he will also be taking an Aerial Tour to survey that damage. So well see what kind of images we see as the president is getting a grasp of how deeply impacted this area was affected. Now, one concern whenever a president heads into a Disaster Area is not taking away resources for the recovery. He said he was assured by the States Governor that his trip would not do that, as hes trying to get that firsthand Look And Offer support to so many people in that region. Kate. Arlette, thank you so much. Coming up for us, four Louisiana Nursing Home residents are dead today after more than 800 were evacuated from their Nursing Homes to a remote warehouse to ride out Hurricane Ida. Now, an investigation is under way. How did this happen . That is next. At this hour families in louisiana are demanding answers about how four Nursing Home residents died and more than 800 more were kept in reportedly horrible conditions to ride out the storm. The residents were moved from seven different Nursing Homes to a remote facility, considered a warehouse, ostensibly to keep them safe as Hurricane Ida hit the state but they were kept in what Health Officials are now calling, quote, deteriorating conditions. The Times Picayune described the conditions truly as inhumane and now theres an investigation. Adrienne broaddus is joining us now. What are you learning about this . Reporter kate, we can tell you this happened in independence, louisiana. Its about 75 miles north of where we are right now. We are in New Orleans. As you mentioned, the governor has promised a full investigation. The chief of police told our Cnn Affiliate he initially thought about 350 people would be in that Backup Facility that has been described as a warehouse. Not 800. And the governor said on friday when officials with the Louisiana Department of health inspected the facility, it appeared okay. He also said the obligation falls on the Nursing Home and their owners. For example, he said, Nursing Homes and their owners have two obligations. One, if they notice conditions start to decline, move the residents or move the Nursing Home members themselves or ask for help. And today one person who said her aunt was in that facility is demanding answers. Why didnt you contact anybody for help . Let somebody know what was going on . Contact one person . People shouldnt be treated like that. You should be held accountable. Reporter and were talking about some of the most vulnerable people in the community. All of the folks that were there have been evacuated. We know 12 were moved to a hospital and the others were sent to shelters that care for people with Special Needs. Meanwhile, here in New Orleans, folks are lining up for gas and it is hot. Back to you. Adrienne, thank you so much. Joining me on the phone is louisianas Lieutenant Governor for an update. Lieutenant governor, thank you for coming back on. What do you know about what is being described as these appalling conditions for hundreds of vulnerable people during the storm with these Nursing Home residents . Its just a horrible situation. It just breaks your heart that this went on and these people died and in those conditions. Its just unacceptable. Its you know, that cant happen again and weve got to get to the bottom of it. A spokesperson for the Health Department told the Times Picayune, said this, we will be looking we will be taking action against these Nursing Facilities and will be making appropriate referrals to law enforcement. Do you believe what happened here is could be criminal . Is criminal . Well, i think it could be. I applaud the governor for calling for a full investigation. And absolutely if people were negligent responsible, they should be held accountable. And weve got to do something that this can never happen again, whether some kind of oversight in these emergent situations, but this is unthinkable that this could happen. That there wasnt a better Evacuation Plan for so many Nursing Home residents seems really unthinkable. Absolutely. They each have their own plan and theyre supposed to execute that when theyre called to evacuate. And theyre supposed to have a place to bring them and obviously they did not. Much more to come on that. You at the very same time, you are waiting and standing by for President Biden to arrive very soon. What do you want to show him, Lieutenant Governor, while he is there . The governor has a long list of things. You know, one thing is to just extend debris is only covered 100 for 30 days. Im down in Plaquemines Parish and we still have 6 feet of water completely submerging the highway for many miles. You cant even get to those homes, my home being one of them. So extending that Emergency Declaration to cover 100 of the initial cleanup is important. And theres a long list of things. I think getting the gasoline and getting those assets needed on the ground quickly will be important because in this heat, people living in homes without air conditioning, many seniors and Special Needs people i hope were still connected, Lieutenant Governor. Can you hear me . Yes, i can. Just one final question. You mentioned the Gas Problem and the governor said thats a major problem as well. I keep hearing a lot of politicians from washington and even in louisiana saying that help is on the way and understandably everyone is working hard to get more Gas And Fuel and cut through Red Tape to make it happen. But people need help in this moment, not tomorrow, not in a couple of days, and you know this. Is there anything more that can be done to get things moving so people arent waiting for hours at a Gas Station . Well, you know, after katrina, and i was Parish President then, we brought in tanks of gas Gas Stations may have fuel. All these things are being worked, its just getting those things to locations, getting those Fuel Tanks in takes time. And the problem is this hurricane devastated so much of an area, it wasnt isolated to the coast. Because it was so strong, it was so area to cover and thats the problem. Yeah. Lieutenant governor, thank you for calling in, i appreciate it. Thank you. Much more work to be done there, and well continue to follow it. Comcast business. Powering possibilities. Breaking news. Cnn has learn that he had some top federal Health Officials now want the White House to slow down and scale back its plan to offer coronavirus boosters, which is starting in just two weeks. Last Night Dr. Anthony fauci made really the strongest case yet for getting Booster Shots. Listen to this. But i must say from my own experience as an immunologist, i would not at all be surprised that the adequate full regimen for vaccination will likely be three doses. So what does this mean now . Joining me now is dr. Jean merazzo, from the university of alabama birmingham. Do you understand what the disconnect is . I wish i understood all of the details, but my take is this. We heard two and a half weeks ago from the White House in a very staged announcement, right . It was almost very theatrical that Booster Shots were going to be rolled out starting september 20th. And many people were rather surprised by that, including myself. First of all, because we really havent seen all the data either from the Pfizer Vaccine or from israel, which is what the administration is apparently relying on a lot. Second of all, that timeline would impose an incredible burden on both the fda and acip, the Cdcs Arm for discussing immunizations, to make it happen by then. And we know from the Acip Meeting that happened a few days ago that people are really cautious. You know, they want to see all that data. The fda prides itself, right, on a very thorough review. For better or worse, they are concerned with safety. So i agree with dr. Fauci, theoretically from an immunologic standpoint but the reality is we do need to make sure this is really safe. We need to make sure its effective. And we still have 25 of americans unvaccinated, period, let alone not boosted. Its an excellent point. Similar to what dr. Paul offit said to me a little while ago. You know, he sits on the Vaccine Advisory Committee and he said that he sees no compelling reason right now for a third vaccine dose. Of course there is a September 17th meeting scheduled where he says more information can come out then. But as youre saying, there hasnt been that level of transparency or data presented yet to draw that conclusion to say that theres a need for Booster Shots yet. Do you so you agree with Paul Offit . Its always safe to agree with dr. Offit, given his experience in vaccinology. Yes, i do. In the advisory Group Meeting that happened the other day, the emphasis was on the fact that the current twodose regimen has done a really good job in preventing the worst outcomes of covid, right . Its really protected people from getting admitted to the hospital, from dying, and generally from severe illness. It hasnt necessarily been as good against people getting infected with the delta variant. So the question is if you do want to institute boosters, should that be with the same vaccine . Should the timing be oriented towards more surveillance of emerging molecular variants and thats a really good question as well. So i think there are just a lot of unknowns out there as we move towards this. The other thing is weve taken a big Leap Of Faith asking people to trust in the rapidity of this process. Lots of people have pushed back and said how could you have developed a vaccine so fast. Now theyre asking them, oh, trust us, you need a booster even so we dont have all the data and may not have gone through the process that the fda is famous for. So lots of considerations. I think its a really difficult topic. And to be clear for everyone out there, were talking about the data on the Booster Shot and the impact and need for a Booster Shot. This is not data on the Safety Or Efficacy of the vaccines that we have many of us have taken, the vaccines that are being that are safe and are being administered every day. These are two separate conversations we are talking about, as you said, because there are so many millions of americans still who have not even gotten their first shot. But on this Booster Shot conversation, practically speaking im sitting here wondering, there are people who are Scheduling Boosters and have scheduled Booster Appointments as we speak. What should they do . So i am personally in favor of people getting boosters if they want to and if it is safe as deemed by their physician or in conversation with people who know these things. For example, if you have an elderly parent whos 90 who was vaccinated in february, as i do, i would absolutely say go ahead, get your shot, because we know that immunity wanes over time, particularly in older people, and we do know that that has happened with the Pfizer Vaccine. I think the challenge is that so many people have not been vaccinated at all. The system is really stressed. Right now, as you know, were taking care of record numbers of patients in our hospitals, so to gear up for widespread Booster Programs would be another level of challenge that i think would be very hard to do. Now, if you have an Appointment And Youve thought about this stuff and you are really want to get it, absolutely. The vaccines are also going to waste. I dont know if thats come into the conversation yeah, there is that new reporting that there were millions of doses that have gone to waste. When i read it, it made me sick to my stomach. Absolutely. So why not take advantage of what we think is probably going to happen anyway. The distinction is between your personal decision to do it, which you can make based, i think, on the available data and your experience versus a coordinated plan between the White House, the cdc and the fda, et cetera, that really sort of says this should happen on a basis that really should get all americans on board with, and that just hasnt happened yet. Dr. Marrazzo, on this reporting of i want to call It Tension because i dont have another word to describe it Behind The Scenes between top Health Officials and this rollout of Booster Shots that the White House has already announced, what does it say to you about the overall Pandemic Response if some of the countrys top Health Officials and the White House are not seeing Eye To Eye To the extent that it is making its way into the public . Obviously there are disagreements that happen Behind The Scenes, but the fact that this is now public, what does that say . Its discouraging to me. You know, so many people blamed the previous administration and the cdcs initially somewhat stumbling response with regard to many aspects of the pandemic. And i think people really did think with a new era of communication, a new era of leadership, there would be a more coordinated approach. That seems to have been borne out. But when you see things like this, and as important as something like a national booster plan, you would really like to see more transparency, again, and some more coordinated communication. So it does lead you to ask whos really running the show here . And that makes people very anxious. Im sure we will be hearing much more about this after this reporting. It is very good to see you, doctor, thank you very much for coming on. My pleasure. Thanks, kate. Stay safe. Of course. Coming up, a cnn Fact Check. A false claim by President Biden that the White House has just responded to. Daniel dale joins us next. Thats why they customize your car insurance, so you only pay for what you need. Oh, yeah. We saw that crush of people trying to leave, of course, there for days before the taliban fully took control. Republicans are blaming and have been blaming the biden administration for this, but it didnt start with them. Priscilla alvarez is joining me with this new reporting. You have a really interesting detail on this. New detail on the Role Trump Advisor Stephen Miller played in how they handled the special visa immigrant program. Reporter we spoke to multiple former officials who worked for the Trump Administration that said the slow walking of a Visa Process for afghan allies contributed to the mayhem at the Kabul Airport when the United States withdrew from afghanistan. As you said, they point to Stephen Miller. Top advisor to former president donald trump, who was known for his Hard Line Views on immigration as the Driving Force for the slowdown of this process. Now, one person described a 2018 White House meeting. During that meeting this person said that miller said, quote, what do you guys want . He went on to say a bunch of iraqs and sands across the country . This stunned officials who tried to convey to the Trump Administration that refugees are among the most vetted immigrants who come to the United States, particularly afghan allies who have worked along with u. S. Troops and on behalf of the u. S. Government and are vetted prior to that work. But still the suspicion of refugees by the Trump Administration stalled this already cumbersome process and led to a significant backlog that was inherited by the biden administration. As one former official told me, we lost time. Now, Refugee Advocates and veterans say the biden administration should have done more to prepare for the evacuation of these refugees, but unfortunately many are believed to still be in afghanistan and could face reprisal by the taliban. Kate. Priscilla, thank you so much for that reporting. So President Biden is taking heat for falsely claiming that he visited the Pittsburgh Synagogue attacked by a Mass Shooter when he never actually went there. The White House has just responded to cnns Fact Check on this one. Joining me now is cnns Daniel Dale who has details on all of this. Daniel, what is the White House saying about this . Well, so President Biden was speaking to jewish leaders in advance of raoshashana. Let me play President Biden before we get to the response. I remember spending time at the going to, you know, the tree of life synagogue, speaking with them. It just is amazing these things are happening. Happening in america. The problem is, as he said, President Biden did not actually visit the synagogue. The director of the synagogue said this just didnt happen. The White House said he was referring to a Phone Call that he made to the rabbi of the synagogue in 2019 and the rabbi just did issue a statement saying this did happen. President Bide Encalled him to express condolences. Still, President Biden said he spent time there, he remembered going there and that, again, is not true. And that did not happen. You also have another Fact Check, this one on the house republican leader, kevin mccarthy, and his recent Fox News Interview thats just Brankly Chockful of false statements. A Sevenminute Interview and i counted five false claims, some of them detached from reality. He said Oil Prices are the highest weve ever seen. Not only were they only half of the record levels, they were significantly higher at points in 2018 and 2019. There was a comment he made about afghanistan that again had no basis in fact. Listen to this. Why arent they protecting the border from those 5,000 prisoners who have just left afghanistan and have the hope of coming across our borders . This is imaginary. There was no group and is no group of 5,000 afghan former prisoners who just left the country and were trying to get into the United States by crossing the border here. One other important point, kate, where have we heard that 5,000 number before . Congressman mccarthy didnt mention that it was president trumps own deal with the taliban where the u. S. Agreed to allow 5,000 afghan prisoners to go free. So false and missing important context. It is so sad that so many Fact Checks are needed but i am so thankful for you, Daniel Dale. Thank you. Thank you. Still ahead for us, what happened to the second graders who were witnesses to a moment that changed the world . There was only 16 of us with him. We get to be the people that tell the story. Reporter tonight, their stories in a cnn Special Report. Front row to history the 9 11 classroom. Joining me now is the man behind this special, cnn anchor victor blackwell. Victor, what did give me a little bit of a window into what this class, these kids, now adults, what they told you about the impact of 9 11 on them. Yeah. This is a story that few people have heard. And theyre still, 20 years later, trying to dissect the answer to that question and find it. Some have gone into law enforcement. Some left sarasota and came straight to new york. We know that the teacher, ms. Daniels, who still is teaching today, still keeps in communication with her babies, as she calls them. She said it had a massive impact on them, and they all remember that day. The president was coming to congratulate them for getting better grades in reading. And when he walked in, one girl put her hand over her heart like she was pledging allegiance to the flag. She thought that was the right thing to do when the president shows up. Another boy thought maybe hes like a king, hell have a crown and there will be trumpets. And then george bush walks in, President Bush. Moments later you saw that whisper from andy card. And the teacher says that he left her. The president left her for a moment but came back. Of course we all know what happened in the moments after that. The president had to leave. But this moment, they have been reluctant for a while to talk about this because theres an element of what they call something like survivors guilt, that theyre so close to this. But Everyone Else who has an intimate story about 9 11 experienced some loss. So they have taken some time to come together and tell this story and were going to have it on sunday night. Did they surprise you when you sat down and spoke with them . Oh, yeah. There were several surprises. There was a moment after the news broke that day in 2001 that the teacher, mrs. Daniels, had to decide what to do. Shes got this classroom of 7yearolds, her babies. She decided to sing to them a song that she had sung to them before, hold on, change is coming. As she started to sing it, in this interview, the children chimed in as well at the same part at which they sang 20 years ago. In those small voices that they had as young children. That to me was a surprise, that they still remembered that moment so many years after waward. Yeah, it really shows the mark that it left. They went through something so unique at a young age together. Do they have a connection to one another still . A few of them. A few of them keep in contact. But 20 years after second grade, of course a lot of us lose contact. But they do still keep in contact with, as some of them call her, mama k, mrs. Daniels, the teacher who was with them that day. You saw the pictures of her holding them tight and smiling there. That connection still lasts two decades later. She seems like a very special person. Im looking forward to hearing more about that. Victor, thanks so much for giving us a preview. Im looking forward to seeing that. I really appreciate it. Sure. You can watch our cnn Special Report Front Row to history the 9 11 classroom.
