There will be a lot of people this morning who will go out in their driveway and their Car Wont be there. The roads here turned into rivers. It is just an awful mess. En a an awful, awful mess but glad that you are here even if remotely. And we begin with the Breaking News this morning, catastrophic and deadly flooding in the northeast spawned by what remains of Hurricane Ida, at least seven people have died in new york. Five trapped by raging floods, one died in a building collapse. At least one person also dead in New Jersey. The storms barreling into new York City overnight, Flooding Streets and homes from literally every direction. Look at that, a State Of Emergency declared in new york and New Jersey after the storm unleashed floodwaters. 3 to 5 inches of rain an hour. New York City was under a Flash Flood Emergency for the first time ever, even the most hardcore new yorkers havent seen anything like this since hurricane issandy. Subways shut down with rivers of Water Cascading through platforms and cars there. And above Ground Mta buses were paralyzed by floodwaters. Between 8 51 and 9 51 Last Night, 3 inches in Central Park breaking the Record Set just 11 days ago. A Travel Ban for all nonemergency cars in effect for most of the night has just ended in new York City. Were going to have a tough few hours coming up until 1 00, 2 00 a. M. Until we get the rain out of here. Tomorrow morning will be dangerous as well. I want to urge anyone moving around tomorrow, do not go into a street, a road, a highway with a lot of water accumulated, that can be super dangerous. Ive never seen this much rainfall this quickly. It is absolutely astounding. An inch or two an hour, that is one thing. Were talking about 3, 4 inches in an hour. Unbelievable accumulation, absolutely different than everything that had been projected. And i think this is sobering to see what is happening with weather in general. Lets bring in Pedram Javaheri leave for us this morning. We knew that it would be bad, but this is truly historic. It is remarkable. We saw when the Storm Prediction Center said this was a level 4, highest risk for excessive rainfall, you certainly knew it would be a wet day. But when you see the amount of rain in the short duration, that is unprecedented by any metric. And here is what is left of ida as it finally pushes away from the United States over the next several hours. Portions of row is rhode Islandd Connecticut and massachusetts, that is where were seeing activity. There is a Tornado Watch around Cape Cod that will continue through at least 6 00 a. M. Weve had at least five reports of tornadoes. Anytime you see a tropical system, there is enough rotation to spawn tornados. That is not unusual. But in places such as New Jersey, you see two tornadoes per Year And Youve seen one in the last few hours and 11 so far in 2021. And incredible year. And upwards of 50 Million americans even at it hour under flood alerts. Weve had Flood Emergencies which are the rarest of weather alerts. And those are only reserved for when you have life threatening Flooding And Water rescues and catastrophic flooding taking place. That is the verbiage that the Weather Service uses. They had never issued it for new York City that happened in the last few hours. And when you see rainfall amounts in just a matter of three to five hours, that is as impressive as it gets. Newark sees its wettest day in recorded history. I checked in with the airport there, how about 300 plus preli. And newarks liberty airport, second most destructed, in New Orleans as youd expect. But this wettest observation is 1 in 1,000 event. So how about new York City, Central Park, 3. 15 inches, that is a 200 Year Event or a one in 200 chance of this occurring. Again the pattern just continues, the severe weather has been in place, we think a couple more hours of active weather before it is all said and done and a storm that really had severe impacts from Louisiana All The Way into new england. A 1 in 1,000 Year Event, wettest day on record for new york. Pedram, thank you. Christine. Yeah, you know, from 7 00 to midnight Last Night, just epic the conditions here. I spoke to a Police Officer about 45 minutes ago and they are just going around pulling the cars out of The Streets, cars that have been smashed by water. Nothing more than water smashing some of these cars up because these streets behind me here in clifton and over the border in montclair were literally rivers. Cars have floated into The Street here. And in Passaic County where i am, there was a fatality, a man in his 70s, a passenger in a car. Firefighters were trying to rescue him, firefighters were washed under the car, were unable to save him. Just a desperate attempt to save that life and were unable to it so in again these raging floodwaters that turned streets in to rivers. The mayor of the city of passaic had this dire warning all restaurants, all businesses need to shut down, there should be nobody going out to go to restaurants or businesses or trying to travel in this weather. It is extremely dangerous right now. We are doing retrieval of bodies because of the storm. We are at a point where there are certain areas In The City where we cant even send our Emergency Responders because of potential danger. This is indeed recordbreaking rain here. I mean, weve just never seen anything like it. And that is a big piece of something that came down in the distance, so the trees are soggy. Lets go to Polo Sandoval in newark. I mean, geez, ive never seen anything like this and this morning a lot of people will wake up to some really wet basements, downed trees, Power Outages and their Car Wont be in the driveway. Reporter and just getting here from new york, from brooklyn, we did pass New Jersey several segments where there were basically abandoned vehicles on the side of the road especially as you get closer to the airport and that is why operations there were they did resume at Newarks Airport just before midnight on limited capacity. So it is important that folks who may have Travel Plans ouf that busy airport to certainly call ahead or check in before they actually make their way in there. And also to give themselves at least 30 minutes additional time to get to that location because the infrastructure was certainly affected. Anytime you have a 1 in 1,000 Year Event, you will certainly have that severe impact to infrastructure. When it comes to Newarks Airport, look at these incredible images, including the Baggage Area that was flooded out. That is certainly hampering the flights that are heading out but even passengers coming in. And access was also temporarily blocked because of floodwaters but were told that much of that access again has been opened up. Governor Phil Murphy is declaring that State Of Emergency and recommending that people obviously try to Stay Home at least early this morning as they try to get a full picture of the extent of the damage throughout the garden state. Back to you. Polo, thank you for that. Indeed a State Of Emergency here in New Jersey and there is no reason to try to commute today. There is a lot of Damage Assessment that still needs to happen here. And were seeing it on The Streets around here, Police Officers are just trying to figure out to make sure that it is safe in many of these streets because there is a lot of there is standing water in some cases and abandoned vehicles that have simply floated away. Yeah, you have to be careful in that standing water for sure. We always warn that. And also the subways were truly submerged. Well have continuing coverage of this storm all morning. If you assume 6. 8 inches of rain fell equally on each of the citys five boroughs, that means 35 Billion gallons of water fell on the city between 7 00 p. M. And midnight Last Night. Just stunning. Evan Mcmorrow Santoro is live on The Streets for us. Central park got more than 7 inches Last Night, almost double the previous record. What are you seeing this morning . Reporter any of us who live here in new york were absolutely gobsmacked by the amount of rain that came down. And we know now that it was a deadly storm. Now confirmed at least seven New Yorkers Dez from this storm. The rest of the city is waking up to a very uncertain picture when 2 it comes to transportati. Im standing at the Downtown Station of the 1 train here in new York City which from up here, it looks fine right now. But let me show you what it looked like Last Night when this rain was coming in. You can see from this video just huge torrent of water pouring into that station and this morning that station is still closed. In fact much of the Subway System still knocked out by this storm. A lot of delays, a lot of suspended lines, a lot of things that arent yet working. Crews worked overnight to evacuate from the trains stuck in the subway when the rain started coming down. We saw a Ground Stop essentially of traffic here in new York City just lifted a few minutes ago, no vehicles other than Emergency Vehicles here on new York Streets has been lifted. But the trains are still in troubling. And everything In The City happens underground, so many important things happen underground. The arteries of the city currently still knocked out by these rains. And we see this affecting buses, the other transportation that we use to get around. So right now, the city is still assessing the damage, still figuring out what to do. But as it stands right now, it is still very hard to get around and despite what it looks like up here, below me it is still pretty messy. Hard to get around and hard to help people. Some of the people who were calling for help who unfortunately passed away are people who had called saying that there was flooding in their homes, please come help me. Unfortunately not reached in time. Evan, thank you so much. Appreciate it. Stay try out there. Christine, Back To You. Thank you, laura. Yeah, im here in clifton, New Jersey where the cars behind me look like they are parked on The Street but they are not. These are cars that have floated here from Somewhere Else with all kinds of debris underneath. These streets all around here in these neighboring counties were rivers, actual rivers. We talked to a Police Officer about an hour ago who was saying some of these cars that they are towing away this morning smashed up by water. They would just come all the way down. We saw one car that was being pulled away maybe a Quarter Mile down the road we found the front bumper of that car. So this is a Water Event here that is something that is simply recordbreaking. The basements of many of these homes are complete losses. Will have to be gutted, water just gushing through windows and in some cases Coming Through the Concrete And Lynn knoll yum. Christine, you are in montclair, New Jersey. What is it like, is your basement flooded right now . Yeah, my basement is flooded. Six big Garbage Cans full of water my kids pulled out Last Night. That Shop Vac never worked so hard. And when you talk to people here, they all say their basements are flooded. And people who live around here, they measure what has happened in their house based on what hurricane is. Floyd was bad, of Course Sandy was terrible, irene was not great and this one is recordsetting in terms of the amount of water people are dealing with. Im just over the border into clifton and the cars behind me are not parked here on The Street, they ended up here from Somewhere Else. And that has been a real problem here. These streets became rivers and cars were just being washed away. The fatality we know in this county was an elderly passenger in a car, the car washed away in a street that turned into a river and firefighters couldnt get him out. The firefighters were washed under that car, that is how much water was rushing down those streets. So just that tragedy there shows from you 7 00 to midnight what happened here, how much water was coming down so quickly that these streets just became rivers. And i know it is still obviously before 6 00 a. M. , so not as many people are up, but do you see any Emergency Vehicles right now trying to clear some of this at least address some of the damage . Yeah, the Emergency Vehicles have been working, you have Power Outages as well, so you have Power Crews out here, downed Power Lines so you have core donees where they are not letting you drive through. And also some of The Streets had to be closed because we dont know what kind of debris is left here. Under this car behind me, there is dangerous debris, pieces of metal. And we found a big bumper of a car, a car that had been smashed up by the waters, that bumper about a quarter of a maybe half a mile away from where the car was being towed. So it is just a lot of debris here, a lot of water in the basement. Still some Power Outages. And police and first responders very carefully trying to keep people off The Streets, Stay Home, there will be no commuting today. This isnt really the morning to be Rubber Necking because it is very fresh here all this damage. This is the day to Stay Home even if you wanted to go out, you cant. Christine, you put those boys to work and get going on that cleanup effort. Before the historic floods overnight, Ida Unleashed Powerful Tornadoes from the midatlantic to the northeast. They first touched down in a primarily commercial area of annapolis, maryland and caused an active gas leak. And then in south New Jersey residents watched their belongings get sucked into a funnel cloud. I heard the Train Sound and when i stepped In The House, i looked out and i saw my furniture just you never expect anything like this to happen in this area because were not in the midwest. As i was putting down the garage door, i heard this rattling and my daughter ran out and said get In The House quick. It was just instantly black and you could hear the lights were flickering. Tornado watch is still in effect until 7 00 a. M. Eastern for parts of massachusetts and rhode island. In louisiana, Recovery Efforts are being hampered by fuel shortages, Gas Lines are long and the governor says lack of fuel has to be addressed quickly to get the state back on its feet. The biden administration announcing new steps to ease the shortage waiving some penalties typically imposed on certain types of diesel. And in la Place Louisiana Food is in short supply. The Food Lines are growing. Ed lavandera is there for us this morning. Reporter Christine And Lawyer rla laura, Gas Lines and lines at Food And Water distribution sites like the one here, this is the new normal for the time being across southeast louisiana in the aftermath of Hurricane Ida. The lines at this particular location have snaked out of this Shopping Center Parking lot and stretched for blocks and blocks. And it is coming at a time where people stock up on Storm Supplies leading up to the hurricane, and now they are at the point where a lot of those supplies are starting to run out. And it is coming at a treacherous time because the power is still not on for nearly A Million people across the region. They are bracing for this Recovery Process to take weeks. And it is very difficult time especially when you consider just how hot the temperatures have been here in louisiana over the last few days and are forecasted to continue being in the days ahead. So nearly A Million people still without power. A little more than half of the Gas Stations that are open and operational between Baton Rouge and New Orleans that have gas at this point. So that is also causing a lot of problems because people are depending on that gasoline to power the generators that might be keeping fans and Air Conditioning systems going at their home. So again just captures how difficult the after math of this storm is for Tens Of Thousands of people across this region. Christine and laura. All right, thank you so much for that. And the storm causing recordbreaking rain in the northeast. A deadly turn of events here in the northeast. Well have more on the recordsetting rain later. Welcome back to early start. It is thursday, september 2. Im christine romans in clifton, New Jersey where The Streets behind me turned into rivers, cars drifted away. Basements flooded. Recordbreaking Rain Event from Hurricane Ida here in the northeast. A very wet thursday indeed. Im laura jarrett. It is about 31 minutes past the hour here in new york. And this is not a river or a lake youre about to see, it is queens, new york. States of emergency declared in new york and New Jersey overnight as Lifethreatening Flooding kills at least seven and devastates communities throughout the northeast. Inside newark airport, water rushed into baggage facilities. Just look at that as The Streets Flooded B across new York City,s stranded, and water poured into the subways across new York City effectively shutting down service. We can take all the precautions in advance and we did deploy to be on the ground in anticipation, but Mother Nature will do whatever she wants and she is really angry tonight. We have to be prepared for cleanup tomorrow. Ill be on site in the morning making sure that this is going well. But right now were in a very dire situation. Approximately 240,000 customers are without power across the northeast. Some rivers may stay well above Flood Stage for several days as the Storm Water flows into streams and rivers. Christine. Yeah, this has been something else here. These cars behind me just floated here probably from Someones Driveway or it could be someone who tried to drive through it and found out that it was a river not a road Last Night and left their cars there. Pedram javaheri has been covering this for us. And i mean, the amount of water that came so quickly, these becames here where i am filled up. Feet of water in some cases, gushing through windows and any kind of crease. This has already been a soggy summer in the northeast and now this. When you look at the numbers of what came down across this region, of course you are talking about one of the most densely populated corners of the u. S. The concrete jungle we know asphalt and concrete, they create about a 50 plus percent runoff, so essentially more than half of what falls out of the sky becomes runoff in these major cities. And then with the historic amount of rainfall, that is what leads to what is happening here. Just a couple more hours before it is all said and done. Just light to moderate showers, i think the bulk of it is just about done here as we watch rhode island, connecticut and up into massachusetts as it rains itself out. This is a Tornado Watch until 7 00 across Cape Cod. So still enough rotation in the atmosphere to spawn a few tornadoes. But we ran the numbers looking at the 7 plus inches that came down around the five boroughs of new York City. When you average out the citys area, it equates to 35 Billion gallons of water falling out of the sky in a five hour period. That is about 50,000 olympic size pools essentially being leased over the city. That is why you are seeing the images that you are. And some of these Spots Flooding is imminent or occurring. Those are the areas in red. But the rainfall amounts as impressive as you will see them for any location in the world. And again, put it in an urban environment and it becomes that much more problematic. 6, 7, 8 inches of rainfall in a matter of three to fewer hours. Five hours. And in newark, wettest single day on record, almost 8. 5 inches came down on wednesday, wednesday night, that is a 1,000 year recurrence interval, meaning 1 in 1,000 chance for this to occur. Even for new York City, 3 plus inches coming down between 8 51 and 9 51 Last Night, also a It 00 Ye 200 Year Occurrence Interval causing the destruction that were seeing. Unbelievable. Thank you so much for that. And it is still ongoing here. The mayor of trenton is ordering evacuations for some parts of that city by 8 00 a. M. Because rising Tide Levels are still a danger. So this is a Water Event that is ongoing. Cnn spoke to one woman who said it was like living through a monsoon. Listen. I was out with a friend and we were just got stuck in the middle of the storm around the passaic Clifton Area and we drove around like an hour to get anywhere towards My House in bloomfield. And i got pictures of My House from my family, it is completely flooded. The entire basement, the cars are filled up with water to the top. Everything is completely destroyed in the first floor of My House. It is really crazy. Polo sandoval is in newark for us. People who live in this area know that this was already a very wet summer. So you get all this rain, recordsetting amounts of rain, and there is no place for it to go. The street behind me was a river, cars floating around. What are you seeing there in newark . Reporter this part of Newark Weve made to dry ground here. But just a couple miles from where we are, there is still water on the roadway. In terms of the water that has receded, it has led to dozens of abandoned vehicles. I saw them on the way here from new york especially close to the airport where you see many of these abandoned vehicles, drivers safe to assume were stranded in some of the floodwaters and also safe to assume that obviously nobody in those cars now, but now many who are trying to get to work are facing that as an obstacle. And if you were flying into newark yesterday, you likely experienced complications as well. Look at these images of the Baggage Area at newark. You can see flooding disrupting operations. But we did hear just before midnight that limited Flight Operations have resumed but for folks who are expecting to fly out especially this morning, it is important to reach out to your airlines and make contact with them to make sure that they are still going on as scheduled. Because the State Of Emergency is in place throughout New Jersey and new york. And a lot of people saying if you dont have to head into, would, work from home, were all used to that by now. Exactly, stay put if you can except for you, polo. Thank you for being there for us. At least seven people have died in new york trapped by floods and building collapses. The mayor imposed a Travel Ban overnight due to the Flooding Conditions. Emergency officials telling people just stay inside. Were out rescuing people in The Street out of their cars. Weve had a few people that weve had to rescue out of basements. You know, unfortunately this came in so fast, you know, people we try to tell people ahead of time dont drive in to flooded areas but i believe this just happened so quickly that people really didnt anticipate it and got stuck. The Travel Ban just expired and nonemergency personnel are still being urged to stay off the roads. Shimon prokupecz was on The Streets of new york when conditions rapidly deteriorated overnight. And he is now live in Times Square. I know that it is drier right now or at least it was when i was coming in this morning. What are you seeing all around you . Reporter yeah, i mean, it is drier. But i spent most of the night underground in the subway here and i can show you what is going on. Subway service is still for the most part suspended. At the 42nd Street Times Square station on the 7 line, there are still hundreds of people here waiting to get home. Ill show you what is going on. As you can see, it is pretty crowded for 5 40 a. M. Some of these people have been out here since 10 00 p. M. Last night. This gentleman sitting here and this woman here, i was talking to them, they live in brooklyn, they have been here since 10 00 Last Night sitting here waiting. He was just leaving work, he wanted to get home. He now has to get back to work around 2 00. But this train has been here for hours. Just sitting here because there are Flooding Conditions up ahead and as you go through the entire Subway Stop here, i mean ive seen some of these people out here all night, you have people sleeping on the floors here, here on the benches. It is just heartbreaking to see this. Many people relying on the Subway System here to get home. Many of these people working all day. Many of them Frontline Workers weve talked so much about during the pandemic, this is how they get around. And now they have been stuck here all night. I spoke to another woman who said that she was hungry. A lot are afraid to leave because they feel if they leave they may miss the train. So they dont leave and they just sit here. So it is heartbreaking to see this. For many of these people, this is the way that they get home, this is what they can afford. And now they are just stuck here waiting. And there is really no word when this Subway Line will return to service. The mta saying they have to pump out a lot of the water. There is some subway service, it is limited, obviously the full Transit System is nowhere near back to normal. And i dont know what will happen for the rest of the day. But there is a very good chance that lot of these people could be here for many more hours. That is just so incredible. Im glad that you have Cellphone Service down there. Are you getting any updates from an overhead speaker, any information at all . Or are you just literally sitting there essentially with no news . There is no news. There is the overhead announcement and then the digital boards here, Heldthey W tell you that there is limited subway service. What is really interesting to watch, in the last 30 minutes, more and more people are pouring into this station coming from other Subway Lines here at Times Square. It is such a hub for so many different train lines. So people come here to transfer to other trains. And a lot of people don is going on, they are running, they see the train and think the train is here and they run, but then they run and then they just sit here. So no, no announcement. Ive not seen any mta personnel here talking to anyone. And a lot of these people, i mean ive seen them here all night just laying as you can see, this is across on the other side, that is the uptown side, people have been here all night laying, sleeping. It is really incredible to see. Just heartbreaking because they just have nowhere to go right now. And it is a little warm down here. I asked the one gentleman who has been here since 10 00 p. M. If he wanted anything, if he needed any water. Again, he just doesnt want to leave because he said i need to get on my train. And then he tells me that he has to be back at work at 2 00. So i dont know. But it is really just yeah, it is heartwrenching and i hope these people can get home at some point. But it is just very unclear what is going to happen at this point. Just trying to get to work and home safely. All right. Shimon prokupecz, thank you for being there for us. Im sure well come Back To You throughout the morning. You got it. Well be right back. The dregs of ida causing Death And Destruction here. Eight people dead in new york and New Jersey in a one of a Kind Event here, an event that essentially has spanned 1400 miles and seven states. And there are more fatalities in this morning than in louisiana now. And Pedram Javaheri has more on the One Of A Kind nature of this storm. From the onset we saw the Storm System make landfall and of course it stayed as a category 4 for a better part of five hours as it moved in to louisiana and the tennessee valley, an area that had 20 inches of rainfall just a couple weeks ago. And it leaves tens of millions of people here with significant impact as well around the northeast. So the coverage, incredible nature of this really plays out to being something that weve never really seen. I wouldnt be surprised if plenty of studies will be done on this storm and what it was away to do. But temperatures have risen on our planet by about one degree celsius. And once that happens, water vapor, the Moisture Content of the atmosphere, increases by about 7 . So as a meteorologist when i see our planet is warming, i know its ability to retain moisture is directly going to be related to what is happening here. In Fact Plenty of studies have been done on the increased nature of heavy Rain Events and guess what corner of the u. S. Has highest likelihood . Of course we saw one with henri and here we go, 70 plus percent right there in the northeast has seen the highest increase in heavy Rain Events. As our planet warms, guess where all that energy is stormed, in our oceans. 90 is stored as Heat Energy in the oceans. And of course fuels the storms. And there is a remarkable persistence with the number of storms we see every year on our planet. Whether it be typhoons, hurricanes or tropical cyclones, about 80 occur every year on our planet. That Number Hasnt varied much year over year, but the number of Category 4s and 5s have. About 30 for every degree increase. So these are all things to consider when it comes to the Significance Amount of rainfall, the incredible Nature And Potency of the storms, all of it relates to our oceans and the atmosphere. Yeah, this is Climate Change in action, folks. Pedram, thank you so much. More than 900,000 power customers in louisiana still without power and could be for weeks. Some of the worst damage is in grand isle. The mayor says it has been decimated. We need some serious help because our Water Line comes through the Marsh And Electricity comes through the marsh and it is all destroyed. We need to get our water back so we can at least start living a little better than we got generators coming in. And as if the lack of electricity and sweltering Heat Werent enough, many areas dont have fully operational sewage systems. You can imagine what that is like. Brian todd is on the ground in New Orleans. Reporter people in louisiana are still struggling just to get the basics. Take a look here, this is the Discount Zone Gas station, look at this line of motorists. It extends well beyond that bridge. Some telling us that they have been waiting eight, nine hours at a time. Reporter your house, you cant live in your house . Well, they say electric is coming back on in the east, but i dont know where it at and what areas. So im going to go check the house and then after that, im gone. Reporter and the owner of this station tells us he has had to ration gas limiting purchases to 30 at a time and he will probably have to cut off the pumps pretty soon because the motor powering the pumps could get fried. So just an illustration of this crisis. Governor John Bel Edwards says the Fuel Crisis is slow to recover and he says several refineries remain down as of wednesday and the state is working with federal partners and local businesses to identify fuel that can be brought in from outside of louisiana. People stuck down there since 10 00 p. M. Last night. Yeah, and where i am here in New Jersey, people are just starting to get out and take to The Streets and try to get their bearings here.
