These wont happen every single day, this expansive of an area in the most populated region in the u. S. Makes the story that much more serious across the east here. Well watch this as we see additional rounds of rainfall coming down. We are seeing several tornados responding this morning as a result of whats left of ida. We are going to watch this with 70 Million americans underneath these Flood Alerts spanning the northeast and the u. S. So this is what i got, correct me if i am wrong. Let me find my glasses. If you assume 6. 8 inches of Rain Fail equally, that would be a whopping 3. 5 billions of gallons of water falling In The City. Thats a lot of water. I believe it was 35 Billion. We calculated the number. It is incredible. Flooding is among the deadliest weather events. 30 plus billion gallons coming down new York City. You calculate that average that we saw right around 7 inches and thats where you get 35 Billion gallons of water. We are talking about Tens Of Thousands of olympic Size Pool being dumped right over the city in a span of three or four hours. The water has nowhere to go as we saw from the women sadly in queens, the water she says it took five minutes to bubble up in the basement to get knee high. We got reports from yale in new haven, the campus is completely in the Dark And Power outages and floodwaters getting into the dorms at yahle. The problems in connecticut and 95 in connecticut and floodwaters and submerging cars on i95. The story shifts North Ward and you have so many rescues underway in New York and New Jersey. Thats what we are hearing throughout our local reporting. There are rescues ongoing. People trapped in cars and homes. We knew there was going to be Heavy Rain in the knorths on this day. It just does make the urgent case that our infrastructure is not prepared for this new normal. It is overwhelmed by the climate crisis. The damage from this is going to be a ton of water. Gallons of water flowing into new York City in a few hours. This is an extreme example of whats been happening on the smaller level, it makes an urgent case for Investment And Infrastructure now. To overwhelm new York City in this way is unprecedented and not only the degree of weather which is how folks is saying this is extreme summer weather, no it is not. You look at the history of the city, this kind of flooding is not normal. This is an extreme example of that. New York Citys subways are overwhelmed. The streets and the roads. The night of the concert a few weeks ago when we did have a closer to a direct hit, before that, before it made landfall, i was driving on jerricho and Long Island and the streets were flooded there in lowlying areas. This is overwhelming, the new York City infrastructure. This is going to take days and weeks to fix. I am having people evacuated from the area and brought into city hall. I am traveling with our police department. It has been very difficult oo evening. The storm took a turn for the worse. The efforts of our Police And Fire Emergency Responders resulted in lives being saved and rescued and residents listening staying indoors and following the latest updates on the news of course. Unfortunately again, we did have a loss of life In The City. Walk us through that, i got a Note Saying that we are now retrieving bodies. I guess you were helping people but then how did that loss of life happen . We set up barricades in areas we had expectations and we had storms in the past and vehicles go through the barricades and sometimes they assume that they can make it through. It was caught in one of those areas by the state. Our firefighters respond ed in way it would rescue two vehicles. An elderly gentleman was unable to be rescued and car was taken by water. Firefighters dragged under the vehicle and it became impossible to reach the vehicle as Water Rose above six and seven feet in that one area. We just recently were able to retrieve the body and pronounced the death and informed the family. We are now hearing more reports. We have unconfirmed reports of other individuals that may have been swept through this storm into the river. We have divers into the scene right now. Our rivers have gone over the banks on Tenth Street. We are currently evacuating individuals who are in downtown right now. This was predicted that there would be bad weather. Mayor, i dont think anyone predicted that the water would come down so quickly and there would be such Flash Flooding in the area. Obviously catching your citizens off guard and i am sure you as well. Do you have enough resources right now to help people . Thats a great question. We received a Phone Call from Governor Phil Murphy extending resources or assistance that we need. We begin planning as early as monday. We had all of our Police Officer and Emergency Responders and we took the pragmatic approach. You are right, there is no way we could have predicted how bad the storm would get. The intense rainfall and the concentration of Water Result in trees coming down. The winds are whats causing trees to come down. The saturation of the ground and roots and trees coming down, we were getting reports all over the city where fires responding. They went out on the rescue and rescued some people in the car and there was a 70yearold Gentleman where unfortunately rescue could not get through and it became so dangerous for them. I am going to bring in now anthony supa, a resident of New Jersey who has been stuck in his car for five hours. Anthony, is that so . Thats right, don. Yep. Stuck since about 8 00. Left dinner from a Family Event and got stuck on the other side of Route 3. The water came down so hard and so fast that literally, theres 2, 3 feet in the street, rushing water. Pretty terrifying. And um i found my way over to clifton the other side of Route 3 but there is no way to get home where i live in morris county. So kind of hanging out in the lot, until some of these roads open up. So take us through it. How fast did the water come up . As you were driving, you could see it . What happened . Yeah, as i left the restaurant, there was about a foot of water in the streets. Got in my car, turned around to try to get to Route 3 and as i got closer to route approximate 3, i saw cars ahead of me. The water was up to the bottom of their trunks, middle of the car. And i pulled a quick uturn but did that in about 2 to 3 feet of water. Never did that before and its very you can lose control pretty quickly. Uhhuh. Ive never seen rain come down that hard, ever. Yeah. So you were you have been stuck for five hours. What are you gonna do, anthony . Im going to wait here. I told my wife i will probably see you when The Sun comes up. So i am going to sit here and wait till Route 3 opens. One of em has to open. I cant go i cant go east or west so i am kind of stuck. And, you know, i got to get up early to work. I work for the power company. So we probably am going to have Storm Duty tomorrow. So either way, its going to be an early morning. Well, i mean, you should know if you work for the power company, you have to deal with these emergency issues. I know you said you saw some cars with the water was up to their trunks. But did you see people who were just stuck in the water . We all kind of managed to get out and i sat on one of the highest points for about an hour, in front of somebodys house. But i saw all those people get out but there were people stuck because i saw police cars go down. And next thing, there were flatbeds and when the water receded, i think they were pulling some of those cars out. Are people trying to i mean, listen. We were here in new York City. Our correspondent here saw people stuck in the subways because they are not moving. The roads obviously in Big Trouble there, as a State Of Emergency in New Jersey and also flashflood emergency, as well. So are people trying to get into hotels . Are you have you tried have you gone that Route Route . I havent done that, yet. But listening to the radio, there is a lots of people like me sitting in their cars for hours on the turnpike on the parkway, on route 287. So this this just overwhelmed the highways. Uhhuh. So, if you work if you work for the power company, what i want to know is that did you guys expect this . Or is that not yeah, yep. I dont know if we expected the usually, were more concerned with the wind. Um, and things like that. That are going to take that take out the power.
