Are you operating on generators and how long can that Go On . We are running on general r Generator Power. We are running on back up water systems. We can run for ten days with Fuel Sources. We have Fuel Sources coming in to give us more fuel. We do anticipate being back on city power, hopefully, within the next day. Thats great news because as you know, in New Orleans, some people in New Orleans are being told they will have to wait three to four weeks. We have heard that. Of Course Hospitals are high pri priority. Theres some power thats come up in New Orleans and we do anticipate as several of our hospitals we should be on power in next 24 hours. Regardless, well run on back up Generation Power until we need to come off that. Weve got plenty of fuel and supplies to keep us operating. That doesnt take into account your doctors and nurses and your staff and what the situation is in their homes and if they have enough power and water. What is their situation . We have evaluating that now. Sweat up a hot line for our employees to call into. Its like an Employee Assistanceline so we can understand their situation. We have secured several hundred hotel rooms. We have been in touch with Carnival Cruise lines that may be a i believe to bring a vessel into New Orleans so we can secure rooms on that vessel. We are bringing in other supplies like toiletries, clothing for all our employee who is may be out of their home and need housing and other types of supplies. Its just incredible to hear that. Some of your staff would have to move to up with of the little cabins on a Cruise Ship after the cascade of catastrophes they have endured from the past 18 months. Hospitals being over run with covid patients to the hurricanes to their own losses. How is your staff coping through this . Ti was touring two of our faciliti facilities, i would say is team is incredibly resilient and in touring our New Orleans facilities, people are up. They want to understand the next steps. Were kpcommune indicating with them nonstop. This team is battle tested. We will come back. The attitude is actually exceptionally positive. Concern, scared about the future but positive that were going to get through this. Were taking care of patients. Were making a difference. The ems, the new Orleans Emergency medical services says they are seeing 195 Volume Increase over normal because of the aftermath of the storm. Were seeing lots of patients. Hurricane clean up rep lapted injuries. We do see these types of conditions in a posthurricane environment. Throughout our hospitals we have 770 covid patients that were still caring for. Were still in this surge of covid were dealing with while were dealing with the clean Up And Restoration of hurricane ida. In terms of that poststorm situation that you speak of, we have been cautious cautioned tok this is over. Just because the storm has passed, it doesnt mean its over. Are you seeing heatstroke and those other conditions because of the weather there that people are now having to deal with. It is hot. We do see those conditions for folks that are in their homes and do not have Generator Power and do not have airconditioning. The State And City has done an amazing job. They have cooling situations but it is one of the byproducts and situations that impact people in other sites of heat related conditions. Patients cant make the most personal decision about if and when they want to become a parent. If they even are going to be able to get an abortion at all, its going to mean Driving Hundreds of miles out of state if they can afford it. That includes not just the drive, that includes finding lodging, an appointment. That includes taking time off of work. That includes finding child care. Really the layers upon layers of restrictions to getting an abortion in texas are unbelievable. Whats your plan . What is planned parenthoods plan to fight this . Were going to continue to fight. Were still waiting for the Supreme Court to hopefully weigh in. Were deeply disappointed that they didnt take any action overnight allowing this law to go into effect. It is still possible they will take action and give some Emergency Relief because of how much harm this law will cause. This is one piece of a much larger agenda were seeing across the country to make abortion inaccessible. This year, already, 600 laws have been introduced in states to restrict access to abortion. This year alone. This fall, the Supreme Court will hear a case that is going to, possibly make Roe Versus Wade meaningless. Right now, already, Roe Versus Wade has been virtually over turned in texas and we are concerned about whats going to happen to the rest of the country. At the very same time that all thesE Laws are cropping in terms of public polling, americans support in bigger numbers than they have in past, legal abortion. The latest Nbc Poll here shows that this august, just last month, 54 of americans wanted to keep abortion legal as opposed to making it illegal at 44 . Thats different than what we saw in january of 2003. Significantly different. As you point out, the Supreme Court is a wild card. What happens if it overturns Roe Versus Wade . We have 25 states placed to do similar things to texas, ban abortion. We are really concerned about what that means for Peoples Ability to access this care that they need. Already in texas were seeing people not able to get appointments. People being very confused and were concerned about that only escalating across the country. Were doing everything we can along with partners on the ground to help people to care within the Law Or Outside of state of texas but it really means that for most people, they will be unable to access abortion. This is 50 years of precedent that were talking about. Roe versus wade has been Law Of The Land for 50 years. This is a huge change. Thank you very much for being here. Thank you. Why did they take a pass on law that is so repressive in some ways in deputizing people to become Abortion Police . ThE Law is deliberately designed to create a whole bunch of procedural uncertainties and procedural questions that seem to trip up the Court Of Appeals in this case and i suspect is part of why we havent yet heard pr from the Supreme Court. For those that are kwconvinced E Law is flatly inconsistent with roe, theres the question of whether this is the right vehicle to put thE Law on hold. I think the answer is yes. I think the Trial Court thought the answer was yes. I think the explanation, the best explanation for why we havent heard from the Supreme Court yet is by design, thE Law r creates these questions to get in the way of fairly obvious problem. Did texas discover this legal loophole that other states could mimic . Absolutely. Wholly apart from what people think about abortion, every one is up, this is a model. Its a model for how whether its Red States or Blue States can make it difficult for people to enforce their clearly established constitutional rights. If texas can do it today to abortion, can california do it with gun rights. Can vermont do it with environmental protection. Theres a reason why we dont usually allow for these kinds of end runs. Theres a reason we dont allow for these procedural traps deliberately set in this case by the Texas Legislature to get in way of blocking laws like the texas Abortion Law. It will be important what the Supreme Court does when it finally acts. Its pretty darn telling it hasnt acted yet. Withe doesnt like Mask Mands and he doesnt like vak Si Flagss because people should be able to make their own Health Choices for their own family. He said texans, not government should decide their best Health Practices but hes willing to go along with the most draconian law in the nation when it comes to womens health. Legally, is there any repercussion against that . Unfortunately, hypocrisy is not a constitutional violation. Perhaps it should be. Their alleged conduct on the night of august 24th, 2019 that resulted in the death of mr. Mcclain. Each of the five defendants face one count of manslaughter and one count of criminally negligent homicide. Mcclain day dyeied three dayr he was put in a Choke Hold and injected. Again, they said they will take a pause. They will reopen or thats the plan as of right now, next week. They need to find way to sort of reset, given the fact the governor wants to keep the schools open, doesnt want any Mask Mandates but they need to proceed with limited and strained resources. One other quick note, both of these School Districts do not have a Mask Mandate in place. Sounds like schools maybe saying these are mutually exexclusive. New details about a small Catholic School in marin county, california and how one unvaccinated teacher passed the virus to 12 of her 24 students. They have helped 77 afghans with special Immigrant Visas and their families. The ceo of Refugee Services of texas joins me now. Thanks so much for being here. Just explain how this works for the 77 afghans that youve resettled in texas, how do they get Housing And Food and jobs . Yes, thank you for having me. So, the afghans that are coming are under a program called the special immigrant visa program, which was started about a dozen years ago to help iraqis and afghans who helped the u. S. Overseas. It works a lot like the resettlement activities we do are refugees from other places. So what happens is that well get some notice that they are arriving. Typically we get a couple of weeks notice. But in this current situation, were getting, you know, four hours, eight hours notice, maybe a day. But we kind of typically well assemble a welcome team, which is a group of volunteers who set up an apartment for them, buy all the essentials that they need. Theyll pick them up at the airport. Theyll bring them to their apartment where they get settled in and then our staff come out and kind of greet them the next day and get started on working with them to kind of apply for Social Security to get their kids enrolled in school, to start providing services like Esl Classes if needed, employment services, whatever they need to kind of integrate into their new home. And how hard is it, number one, for them to find jobs and to assimilate into Texas Culture . And i know that you have said, youve called your state of texas, quote, one of the friendliest, most accommodating places on earth. And i want to believe that. But of course were in i mean, but we see in all sorts of other stories how were in the most Vitriolic Political Climate of our lifetimes, and so are you getting resistance from some corners of texas about resettling afghans . Not that i have seen. Im a Native Texan so i have to say nice things about my state. Its a great place. There is a lot of great people here. There are some misunderstandings about the people that we work with, about refugees, about these special Immigrant Visas. But typically when people learn these are the individuals that helped the u. S. Forces overseas and that we made a promise to that we would make sure that they and their families were safe. And weve been doing this now for about 12 years. The u. S. Has been. And so once people understand kind of what the population is that were talking about here, i have not seen a lot of kind of pushback on that particular, on this effort of welcoming the afghans who risked their lives to help us. And do you find it easy or hard to get them jobs . Um, i think in this economy theres a lot of jobs to be had. I think it depends. Refugee services of texas is in austin, houston, dallas, fort worth, amarillo, and down in harlingen. It kind of depends on the community, depends on the situation. Up in amarillo theres a lot of Meat Packing jobs available. And most of our communities the first jobs that a refugee will typically get may be in the service industry, may be at a hotel, may be at a restaurant. And, no, we typically im getting a lot of calls from people who are looking for employees these days and want to connect in with our Employment Caseworkers here to be part of where we try to connect our clients into work opportunities. Industry officials are telling me people should not overreact here. Panic buying more fuel than they actually need, filling up every container they can find is only going to make the situation worse. We learned that when the colonial pipeline shut down in may. But how long is this Gas Shortage going to last . Well, thats the big question. I think the key is the Power Situation. Because whats next, the next challenge is the refineries. And the refineries, we know that a lot of them have been shut down. Theyre trying to restart but they really cant do that without power. And these shortages are not being caused by refineries yet because they have stockpiles on site. But at some point thats going to run out.
