He was trying to sell the decision to leave while defending how it was carried out. How do you think americans will see this . Well, look, first of all, id be the first Thing Id always say is it hard to judge anything in the moment, you know, and we tend to do that and say this is what is going to happen and this is how people will interpret it. Time will tell. The decision to Leave Afghanistan will wear well. Already, most americans support it. Even as most americans think the Exit Wasnt handled as well as it could have been and i thought the most powerful part of the president s Speech Today was not his sort of defiant defense of the details of the exit but his very compelling argument for why it was time to Leave Afghanistan and what it would have meant to stay. And i think most americans believe that. I think it is a major, major turn in american Foreign Policy and its a speech by the way, don, that i heard him give 12 years ago when President Obama was dealing with afghanistan and this is what Joe Biden believed then that, you know, we should have a focussed mission and that mission should be on going after those people who attacked us, not in Nation Building in afghanistan and so, you know, it was written in the Post Tonight he gave a speech hes been practicing for years and i believe thats the case. There is a poll that shows 38 of americans approve. Do you think The Public will ultimately not focus on the chaos . Well, i think The Public, as david said, The Public is moving towards where the president is on this. And much of this is where The Public is because what theyve seen and heard from the News Media over the course of the last two weeks and their interpretation of it. The public wanted out of afghanistan. Were out of afghanistan and as each day goes further, i think they will see wow, they will start understanding the facts of this situation in what happened and even though it was a chaotic and War Zone that we were in, he was able to get out more than 120,000 people out of there and obviously, there was loss of life but there has been loss of life in afghanistan for 19 years. I think The Public was weary and i think over time this will acue to the president s benefit. I think in the end, in the short term many times theyre punished for telling the truth but in the long term rewarded for telling the truth and i think biden more than any president since 2001 fund mentally told the truth about what afghanistan was about and what happened and where we ended up. Ill add, keep in mind that the elections and midterms is a long way away and 2024 is a long way away. In 1975 when saigon fell, a year later, the Vietnam Wasnt even in the top ten of issues discussed in 1976 and in 1983, 2041 soldiers were killed. 220 marines at barracks in lebanon and a year later Ronald Reagan won with 49 states and won a landslide. So these things have a tendency to move quickly but i think in the end, biden will gain from this over time as opposed to lose from it. He did, as you said, youve been saying he promised to get all americans out but 100 to 200 are left behind. There is a poll that shows 84 of americans say u. S. If we dont get these people out, again, matthew says public sentiment will moves side but think it will come back to haunt the president . Look, you know, i said earlier Today Weve left afghanistan but its not clear that afghanistan is going to leave us. You know, and if there are tragic stories what happens to americans trying to get out of afghanistan, that is going to be held on the president s account. Im sure of that. But, you know, i thought today in the speech i thought that he made too little of the fact that there were he said we have 90 of the americans out that want to get out. 90 means 10 are still there, but he also was compelling on what it would have meant to leave the to continue this evacuation and we saw, we got a taste of it with the horrific Terrorist Attack the other day. These are hard, hard judgments that president s have to make and, you know, i do think in the main, the military did a splendid job after the military got scrambled when Afghan Forces collapsed in the ways the president himself acknowledged knowing or at least many didnt anticipate. So, you know, yes. The short answer to your question is yes, i think that this is not over. And they have to be aware about working every angle they can to get every american that wants to get out out and god forbid something happens to one of them and that will be an issue. Yeah. There are all kinds of bumps in the road here, you know, on the main issue, i think he wins and i think its an important moment in american policy, Foreign Policy but the details of the exit remain bumpy and its something im sure they will have to be aware of in the months to come. Look, i know, ive covered many a hurricane there and one road in and one road out and when that water gets really high, if it gets high enough, it can wash you right out into troubled waters. Right . Yes. And so ive been there in the middle of the night trying to get out of Grand Isle on that road hoping it doesnt flood and wash our cars and news vehicles away. I want to play something from the governor earlier, okay, Madam President and then well talk. So if you have already evacuated, do not return here or elsewhere in Southeast Louisiana until the office of Emergency Preparedness tells you its ready to receive you. The schools are not hospital. The businesses are not hospital. The hospitals are slammed. There is not water in your home and there isnt going to be electricity. Lets get you where youll be safe and comfortable. If you need a hospital, hell get you to a hospital. Please dont come home until they tell you it time. Thats quite a message. Where shourld people go . Were finding people here are leaving. There was backed up traffic on i10 because people are getting out. They stayed during the storm but now these living conditions theyve decided to just move elsewhere for the time being. They took that away from us this year so we were not even allowed to give that option to parents.
