I just this is such a symbolic moment for this White House. And for this president. Obviously you hit it at the biggest point here. The president has delivered on a Campaign Promise to get the united states out of its longest war despite concerns about what the fallout would be. Despite concerns about repercussions. That has happened. We saw the last flight leave. And now the president has to talk about what happens next. Before he does that, i think he needs to answer several key questions im told will be a key component of the speech today. That is what The American presence or efforts in afghanistan are going forward particularly giveren the fact there are still more than 100 american citizens that want to leave the country that are still on the ground. There are hundreds if not thousands of afghan allies who wanted to leave the country who are on the ground. We heard from the secretary of state. Tony blinken laying out the diplomatic efforts and process the u. S. Is launching and going to be engaged in in the days and weeks ahead in the efforts to get those individuals out. I think theres a lot of concern on Capitol Hill from both parties. Republicans and democrats. Whether or not the Administrations Reliance or continued citing of the taliban giving its word that those individuals will be able to leave. Whether or not that will actually transpire and occur. I think youre going to hear the President Talk about the leverage his administration and international partners believe they have, particularly on the economic front and on the international Diplomacy Front when it comes to the taliban as they try and form their government as well. Obviously the president has no shortage of questions to answer about the last 16 days. It is an absolute fact that getting 120 plus thousand people out of the country in those 16 days is something thats extraordinary by any account. The fact there are allies there and it transpired at all in the way that it did is something the administration will have to address. Both today and going forward. Yeah. Good to see you, phil. Thank you for that. The taliban is very clearly celebrating the end of Americas Presence in afghanistan. Sam kylie is where the final u. S. Military flights landed. Now the question is what are the taliban going to do with this newfound power . Well, its been a fascinating period, this interim after the united states left before the taliban formed what they promise will be an inclusive government. Not quite a government of national unity. They say it will be under sharia law. On the airport itself, within the grounds of the airport, you had the spokesman for the taliban, but hes more than that. Hes a very powerful figure within it. Lecturing the taliban Special Forces who come from the hakani network, a Network Part of the taliban but also historically has had close ties to Al Qaeda. Considered something of the taliban Special Forces, the Salespeople Youve seen walking around at the initial stages on the airport after the u. S. Fell. We have lecturing them saying two things. The first is we want to see a good and positive relationship with the united states in the future. And also telling them and this is a repeated Message Theyve been sending out, to be respectful and nondomineering toward fellow afghans. In other words, not to repeat the medieval attitudes that the taliban struck when they came to power back in 1996. And also gave Safe Haven to Al Qaeda which went onto prosecute the 9 11 attacks. A very big effort being made in a very public way by the taliban to try to be consistent with the demand being made by the international community and reinforced here out of qatar, the qatar people have arguably the closest or best relationship with the taliban. That is a message they are sending, too. Moderate. Good to see you, sam. Thank you so much. Joining me now is kaitlyn collins. David axelrod, and retired former aid to general petraeus. The president is and the Mark Administration made a promise to applicants in afghanistan that they would get them out. And yes, they got a lot of people out. Biggest Noncombatant Evacuation in u. S. History. They still fundamentally broke their promise. How are they going to deal with that . Well, President Biden is someone who has said he wants to be measured against his own word and the promises he makes. Thats an assurance he gave earlier just a few weeks ago when he was doing an interview and he was asked will troops stay in afghanistan until every american who wants to leave has left . And what we heard from the commander of central Command Yesterday was saying there are still americans in afghanistan who do want to leave. Who were either unable to make it to the airport. They said they could not accommodate them. Its not clear what the details were for the people. The secretary of state, anthony blinken, said its about closer to 100 people they believe that are still there. And obviously the situation to getting them out is a lot dicier now that the u. S. Military has left. And what weve heard from them is saying there are assurances from the taliban publicly that they will still continue to let people go in and out. But its not even clear how this is going to work with the airport and who is controlling the airport and how that works. Given it was the United States Military running it up until midnight in kabul yesterday. And so thats been a big question for them. And yes, they can certainly tout the 6,000 americans they got out. They can certainly talk about the warnings that they repeatedly offered to americans since april saying they needed to leave afghanistan. But also, you have to look at what the president has said and what has transpired. That is going to be a big part of it. I imagine the White House is aware of this and that they will have President Biden address it this afternoon. Yep. I mean, colonel, between the uncertain rule of the taliban now and the growing threat of isis in afghanistan, i mean, what kind of threat are the people who are left behind under and in at this moment . Well, theyre in far greater danger to isisk which would love to do nothing more than to take americans hostage. Thats the real threat. I think the taliban does want to play nice in terms of getting their country nationals and americans out of the country. Theres no reason for them to keep them. And it would give them some good will going forward when they go forward and ask for financial assistance and economic Assistance And Development assistance and so forth. So the real danger is isisk which is what weve seen in the last week as well. And how real that danger really is. David, how important is this moment . And this speech that Joe Biden is about to give . Well, look, this is an important moment in american history, and he is delivering on a promise to extricate america from afghanistan. Extricate our troops from afghanistan. The question is were done with afghanistan. Is afghanistan done with us . There are all of these lingering issues about people who remain, who we need to get out. Also about the humanitarian implications of this withdrawal. And finally, the national Security And Antiterrorism implications. The opponents of the withdrawal argue as they have for 20 years if we pull out that afghanistan will revert to become a centerpiece for terrorist organizing. And the question is how are we going to confront that with the overhorizon forces that the president says Hell Marshall . That remains to be seen. But kate, i think that he will have to deal with some of the issues in his speech. What they very much want to do, and i think this is why they waited for him to speak today. Focus on the larger issue. We have been there for 20 years. I was in meetings 12 years ago when the military was arguing if we just surge now, that we can hand this over to the afghans and then we can come home. That was 12 years ago. And biden was very much on the other side of that argument, and i think that hed heard enough of those arguments. And most americans agree with him on that point. That is where hes going to continue to focus. You know, in his remarks. Thats where hed like the focus to be. Its hard, the shortterm issues are hard. The breech of faith with afghans, difficult issue. The breach of faith with allies who feel that this was abrupt and not wellhandled is a problem. But at the end of the day, the larger issue is are we in afghanistan or not in afghanistan . And i think thats where hes going to want his focus to be. Kaitlyn, david raises an interesting Point And Something i was wondering ahead of the speech as well. It feels like maybe a little bit that biden is speaking today is almost like putting a button on this or wrapping up this crisis. Right . America is no longer in afghanistan after two decades. But this is obviously not going away. David said it more eloquently than me. We might be done with Afghanistan But Afghanistan is not done with us. Does the White House accept that . I think that they accept it in the sense that theres a lot of uncertainty about whats to come with afghanistan. And one thing that stood out to me from secretary Blinkens Speech last night was he was saying they had been relying on the taliban as a matter of practicality over the last several weeks when it came to letting people get to the airports. It was the taliban that was securing the perimeters, the Check Points outside the airport. But he was saying now going forward, there are talks with the taliban dealt with only when it is in americas national interest. And strategic national interest. And i thought that was a notable comment given, of course, that is a big question of how does this work going forward . And are they recognized . And i think with President Biden here, it was interesting he wasnt one of the first people to speak yesterday. They let the pentagon announce this and confirm that the last Military Flight was gone. Then they let the secretary of state speak to say that this is a diplomatic mission now. And we are focussed on what this is going to look like. There is no diplomatic presence in kabul to be clear. They are going to be operating out of do har. It gives you a chance of how the situation changed. Now when we hear from President Biden, it will be bigger picture own focus on his promise to bring americans home from afghanistan. Thats what aides think is the most important. That doesnt mean questions will go question about how it was handled. There are many enduring images that came out of the final exit. One of them is going to be this video that weve seen and the pictures were now seeing of taliban fighters wearing what appears to be u. S. Military fatigues, inspecting u. S. Military aircraft left behind. The pentagon has stressed, repeatedly, that they have demilitarized the equipment and made it inoperable. I wonder what you think of seeing this imagery and what it means. I think its to be expected. We shouldnt make too much of it. The taliban isnt going to cruise that equipment to invade a neighboring state. The war there is over except their war with isisk. So this is a lot like what happened in vietnam in 1975. The North Vietnamese captured a ton of u. S. Equipment and used it for decades thereafter. But and they did have wars with china and cambodia. I think the taliban, you know, theyll strut around in the u. S. Uniforms. Theyll parade around in our vehicles. But in the end, its it doesnt mean a whole lot, because theyve accomplished their goal already. And the equipment really wont do them much good when it comes to governing the state which is the next major task for the taliban. Yeah. Which is a huge, huge question if they are going to be possible and capable of that. Colonel, thank you. David, thank you so much. Kaitlyn, thank you for sticking around. And it may be weeks before power is fully restored. That is a huge problem, of course, in any aftermath. But now a dangerous Heat Advisory is in effect for parts of Louisiana And Mississippi. Overnight in mississippi, two people were killed. Ten others were injured when part of a roadway washed away. Essentially disend grating leaving a massive whole that swallowed up seven cars. This from the effects of ida. We have the latest from New Orleans. Nadia, the government offered an update on Recovery Efforts in louisiana. What did he say . Reporter well, kate, the governor is talking about all the things theyre able to do now that the storm has passed. Theyre working on getting more fuel. They worked on helping people being rescued in la place. Theyre also asking for patients for people to continue to be patient with them as they continue the Recovery Efforts. Weve been through some neighborhoods around here. You can see this pole behind me slanted over. Power lines that have fallen. The power is still out. I spoke with a woman who has a transformer on top of her car. She says she hasnt seen anyone, not the power company, No One from the City Or Parish asking her what they can do to help. That is part of the delay. The governor asking for patience there. So we know that neighbors are helping neighbors and this is something that you always see after a natural disaster. Its really the bright spot after a natural disaster. We met a woman named kapa, the owner of a restaurant, the first one to open up after hurricane katrina. And she prides herself on being there for the people of New Orleans. Today we found her outside of another restaurant she owns handing out food to people. She said she didnt want it to go to waste. Listen. I was raised by catholic nuns. You give when you have plenty, and i believe that. If you do good, it comes back to you tenfold. And it this point in time, its what we do. You do good and it comes back to you. After i do this, im going to go home and clean my neighbors yards. What is what people are doing. Taking out their brooms and rakes and helping each other out. Unfortunately, we did see the other side of people that comes out. That small nasty element that tries to take advantage of storm victims. There were reports of breakins at some of the stores. Its Pitch Black at night with no electricity. The Police Officers have been set up on different blocks around New Orleans, making sure that No One is looting or going into stores or homes where they shouldnt be. Nadia, thank you very much. Appreciate it. One of the hardesthit areas is from this hurricane has been Grand Isle, louisiana. It was pounded by torrential rain, and it got some of the worst of those fierce winds. Were going to show you a new video showing some of the damage that was left behind. It was shot by josh welch, still stuck in Grand Isle. Had to ride out the storm on a boat. Joining me now for an update of where things are and where things are headed is Jefferson Parish President cynthia. You have been working around the clock. What is the latest from your parish . I know there was so much damage we see in the first images coming out. Yeah. I mean, actually, some of the first images ive seen on the News Today of Grand Isle, i didnt know there were people on the roofs. The mayor probably didnt either. Yesterday he told me he thought everybody made it to the multiplex. He was able to just get in. I was able to talk on the phone with him because he got to the top of the bridge. I wasnt until the morning that i realized people stayed in their homes and im hearing they were on the roofs of their homes. A tragic situation. The Rescue Effort is difficult when you dont have Communication Or Access in. We couldnt even land a helicopter there yesterday. Very difficult circumstances to do a rescue and to get people the very basic needs that they have as protection from the Sun And Food and water and medical care. And this is what were up against in some of our communities. Yeah. Its that basic in terms of the needs right now. You mentioned that you were able to connect with the mayor down in Grand Isle briefly. What are communications like . And most importantly, what is the mayor telling you . Well, the mayor wants to help his people, and it was very difficult. I know yesterday he wanted a helicopter. We were trying to get him a helicopter to get in but the helicopter had nowhere to land. You from Thea Footage ive seen on national media, it seems like the roadways are clear. Different in la feet. They are under water. I havent been able to get out there today. I ill look at it at some point today. Were trying to dewater that. Thats one of the big issues were trying to get to today, getting the water out. A massive amount of water, miles and miles of water. Its not just a little section. And the Search And Rescue continues today. We have boats going into that community as well. And then up here where were in the hurricane protection system, were dealing with power outages. Water supply that is fragile. My concern is humanitarian aid is going to increase as the days go by, so were looking at Shelter Operations to get people outside. I cant take care of people if you cant take care of yourself. If i dont have electricity, i dont have clean water, you know, so were going to have to get some of those people on buses a couple hours away to get their basic needs met. Stick with me if you could. Louisianas governor is giving an update right now on Rescue And Recovery efforts. Lets listen in. The storm was every bit as advertised. And the damage that we have seen here and that theyre dealing with is just catastrophic. And it was not just surge but you got plenty of surnl. It was not just wind, but you got plenty of that. Also some of the heaviest rains that fell anywhere in the state of louisiana fell on st. John the baptist parish. 80 of the rescues done in louisiana were done in that parish yesterday. Very resilient and hardy people. Many of whom have decided not to leave. I expect that thats going to change over the coming days, because theyre going to find out that their homes are not going to be repowered any time very soon, and they have damage. So we have Shelter Operations. More than 30 shelters now across the state of louisiana. We have the transportation so we have a lot of work ahead of us, and No One is under the illusion that this is going to be a short process. We have the entire National Guard mobilized. Much of that presence is right here in louisiana. Im sorry. In st. John the baptist parish. We have additional Law Enforcement on the ground to help you, sheriff. State troopers both from louisiana, but probably from out of state. We have wildlife and fisheries officers. We will be moving National Guardsmen in as well. Just for basic security functions. And so were going to be with you all for the long haul. What im trying to make sure people understand is many of the life supporting Infrastructure Elements are not present. Theyre not operating right now. So if you have already evacuated, do not return here or elsewhere in Southeast Louisiana until the office of Emergency Preparedness tells you it is ready to receive you. The schools are not open. The hospitals are slammed. Theres not water in your home, and theres not going to be electricity. So lets get you where you can be safe and somewhat comfortable. And if you need a hospital, we can get you to a hospital. Please dont come home before they tell you that its time. And the last thing im going to say before i ask the Fema Administrator to come up is most deaths right now we have two confirmed deaths across Southeast Louisiana because of the storm. I expect that number is going to rise. But historically we know that most people are injured and killed because of the response. Not the storm itself. Carbon monook oxide generator, using Power Equipment that you arent accustom to. Falling off a roof when youre cleaning up, and heat exhaustion. Its going to be Heat Index will be 100 for the next two weeks. And at this point in time, even though i told you 80 of the rescues that were done in the state were in st. John the baptist parish, we dont have a single confirmed death, and i want to thank the first responders and Law Enforcement who have done a tremendous job. That means the people have done some right, too. Now is really the most dangerous time over the next week. A couple of weeks. Were asking people to be patient. Were asking people to be careful. And please, be good neighbors. Check on that elderly couple who live across the street from you. Check on your elderly parents or grandparents or Special Needs families. And we have 911 operating here. So call 911. At this point, im going to ask the Fema Administrator to come up. Shes going to tell you that the president signed a major Disaster Declaration that turned on individual assistance for all of Southeast Louisiana, including st. John the baptist parish, but we also have 100 for the next 30 days and all costs associated with the Debris Removal and emergency protective measures like sheltering and other things we need to bring to bear in order to stand the parish back up. We appreciate your presence and the good news youre bringing to us. Come on up. Thank you, governor. Good morning, everybody. On behalf of the president , our thoughts go out to everybody that has been impacted by this devastating storm that went through louisiana. As you heard, we understand many people are away from their homes and want to get back in their homes, but i strongly encourage everybody, please listen to your local officials. Please listen to when they tell you its safe to come back home. We also understand that many of you did stay behind and youre now seeing the damages across your neighborhoods and your own personal homes. As the governor mentioned, the president did sign a major Disaster Declaration which means that if you do have damages or you are displaced from your home, you may be eligible for assistance from fema. So if you havent already, you can register. You can go to disasterassistance dovi. Gov. I also understand that many of you dont have communications right now. We are also going to be bringing in teams that will be walking around your neighborhoods. They will be able to register you as well. And so if you havent been registered or if you have questions about your registration, you can find somebody thats wearing a Fema Shirt and theyll be able to help answer your questions or help you get registered if you havent already. We have been embedded here with the state since before the storm made land fall. We have such a great partnership with our state and local officials in louisiana, and the federal family that comes to be part of this response is part of that Disaster Declaration. Fema is just one small piece of that. We have brought into the coast guard. We have brought in the Army Corps of engineers. Many other federal agencies here on the ground supporting you. We staged a number of resources ahead of this storm, and now we are moving those in to meet the needs and the requests from the local officials to help them address their immediate concerns. Id like to just also say its been a rough 24, 48 hours. And the first responders have been amazing. They work so hard to make sure that theyre keeping their communities safe and many of them at the same time struggling with their own losses to their own homes. Just wanted to give a big shoutout to the first responders across louisiana for the hard Work Theyve done and theyll continue to do over the next days and weeks. Finally, just to repeat what the governor said, checking on your neighbors and loved ones. So important right now. People are going to need help. And what i have found across this country is just how amazing it is that the communities come together and help each other out. It really goes a long way. Thank you, governor. Good morning, and thank you all for being here this morning. I also want to offer all my prayers to our entire community. What we are experiencing right now is one of the greatest disasters our Governor And President have seen. Our community is devastated at this time. And i would like to ask our if you can stay where you are right now, please do so. Currently the parish is without power. And were without water. So where you currently are now, if youre in a safe place with water and power, thats probably the best place for you to be. Id also like to remind our residents as well, we know that communication is a challenge right now. For about 30 hours, No One was able to communicate with anyone. I want to thank fema and everyone who is here. They recognize the communication challenges that were having. Because our residents may not be able to get on fema. Gov or call anyone. If youre in your own without electricity. Theyre going to have boots on the ground to intake and get with our residents to get them the assistance that they need. American red cross is here. I cant thank you enough. The resources are ramping up now that communication is getting better. Yesterday there was no communication. That is really making it difficult for us to reach our residents. I cant thank everyone enough for being here. If you have family that is somewhere else and you can communicate with them about whats going on on the ground, please do so. We are doing all of our assessments right now for water, utility assessments, Damage Assessments and once we have a good assessment on what our infrastructure is really looking like, well be able to give a better assessment on when we think water can be restored. We have activated all of our Preposition Contracts just to remove debris. Its causing damage for us to not get to all the areas that have damage. All thats been mobilized and activated and were working very quickly. This is going to be a marathon and not a sprint. But ive been in this community for Hurricane Isaac. And i know that we are resilient group of people. This is going to be very difficult. Worst disaster that weve all seen in st. John parish. And its going to take a long time. Were here to support the residents. And i just want to thank everyone. And thank the media for being here now. For a while we could not reach our residents. I do appreciate you all coming and thank you. Reporter good morning. Thank you to everyone for coming out. Thank you, governor. You have not let us down. We have been through Hurricane Isaac and seen this movie before. Here we are. Our residents are very resilient. They do a good job when it comes to recovery. Two things i want to mention. To the criminal element, curfew, dawn, dusk until dawn. When it gets dark, do not be on the streets of st. John parish. Theres nothing out here for you to do. Let me say this. 911 connections are very scarce, and very hard to come by. Most of the Residents Cant call us, which means theyre probably going to take matters into their own hands. You may be the one needing 911. Thats what im trying to say in the most polite terms i can say. For the people who are already suffering out here, do not become another victim to contractor fraud. If somebody comes to your house and theyre going to fix this and that, dont give any money up front. And whoever does come to your house and wants you to do Law Enforcement a favor, the state. Take a picture of them and take a picture of their vehicle and their license plate number. Do not let yourself become a victim of not only ida but the people that are going to try to take advantage of you. If you need 911, call 911. My st. John residents, were going to get st. John parish for you to come home. Be careful. Be safe. Were going to tell you when to come and get your stuff and leave. Pay attention to the News Reports and the traffic pressers. Were going to get you back home. Sit still for us. Were going to bounce back. Thank you. St. John Parish Sheriff. Well take one or two questions and then move out. Reporter whats the situation with the Food And Water availability for people here if they need that . Well, we actually are coordinating now with the parish for points of distribution. And i think youre going to see that quickly in terms of what the National Guard will do here. With them water and so forth, trying to Add Ice to that list. Bags of ice as soon as were able to do that. Those are not operating today. But were also working with the red cross and that correlation started already. Were going to have hot meals fed here and were going to be coordinating with the parish to make sure those are in the communities where the people need them the most. And obviously we know that we dont yet have Functioning Supermarkets and Fast Food Restaurants and that sort of stuff. And were working as fast as we can to get this stood up. I want to remind people, were here on tuesday morning. The hurricane came through sunday. It didnt leave this area until after lunch, well after lunch on sunday. But the presence youre going to see is going to grow and grow from here on forward until obviously were not needed anymore. Reporter [ inaudible ] i dont believe anybody. Im not satisfied with 30 days. The energy people arent. Nobody out there needing power is satisfied with that. But i am mindful that we just had the strongest hurricane at least tied for the strongest that the state has ever experienced. And infrastructure has been damaged. The Damage Assessment continues. That started yesterday. It continues. And then once they know exactly how heavily damaged the infrastructure is, then theyre going to be able to respond, put together a plan. But what i can tell you is we have well over 20,000 linemen, Vegetation Crews and others in the state right now. I did a Twohour Phone Call with the Energy Company this evening to make sure they know this is a high order of priority. We all want airconditioning. Thats how we run our lights and air conditioners. Im worried about it because thats how we run our hospitals and our hospitals are full, and we have so many other things that are critically important. And we know Thatve Ph even if have a generator, typically after so many days, they start to fail. Were trying to do everything we can to work with them and restore electricity as soon as possible. To prioritize the things that really are the priorities for repowering, and were bringing in redundant Generator Capacity and technicians in the meantime. But nobody is satisfied. And quite frankly, you know, i will be surprised if not pleasantly surprised but unpleasantly, if its 30 days before we start to see power being restored. But there are parts of the state, as you move from between here and the coast, you have much more damage than you saw even in New Orleans. Every area is not going to come back at the same time. And we do ask people to be patient. Thats one of the reasons we need people to stay out. If youve already evacuated or if youve decided whether to evacuate, take all this into consideration. Because quite frankly, its going to be a while before we have all the conveniences, and not just conveniences. The things you need to live. Okay. This is it. Reporter the administrator mentioned having neighborhoods. Is that something happening here or throughout the entire region and other parts of the state . I ask that because of the cell phone stuff. Its a great question. We are going to start bringing the teams in. Theyre coming in today. Theyll be starting to go out into neighborhoods around louisiana. Well work for the neighborhoods in the most need for those. They have ipads. They can register people offline and get cell connection. It loads their Information And Theyll get a Case Number and get im the fema admini administrator. Okay. Thank you all very much. God bless. Weve been listening in to an update from the governor of louisiana as well as the Fema Administrator. And a Parish Sheriff who was not mincing words. The big message from the governor, he said, is that if you are out and you are somewhere comfortable with the bear necessities like water and electricity, and a roof over your head, stay out, he said. To quote the governor, now is really the most dangerous time. Well be bringing you updates on the aftermath of ida in Louisiana And Mississippi throughout the day. Ahead for us still, he served his country but his country failed him. He had a treatable condition but died because there was no Icu Bed available because they are all packed with covid patients. Cascade platinum we do have Breaking News into cnn out of the pentagon. The u. S. Military negotiated a secret arrangement with the taliban that led to taliban escorts of americans to kabuls airport. These details are just coming in from Barbara Starr at the pentagon. Tell us what you know, barbara. Reporter well, kate, we had known for many days because the pentagon talked about it, that they were developing a Communications Channel with the taliban described as a pragmatic relationship. But this morning were learning more details about just how deep and how close and secret that relationship with the taliban actually was. Two Defense Officials are telling cnn there was a secret arrangement negotiated with the taliban to help americans get out. They would the taliban would have these Mustard Points agreed to with the u. S. Americans would gather at the Mustard Points, having been notified by the u. S. Government about where to go. At the points, the taliban would pick them up and basically walk them into the Airport Area to the gates where american forces were waiting. Often able to observe The Americans approach and try to ensure their safety, getting to that last gate where they could cross into the airport. Now, when we do want to acknowledge, of course, that there are many reports that americans could not get past the regular taliban Check Points. But theres about 100, 200 americans perhaps left in kabul, left in afghanistan that want to get out. But we are told that this secret arrangement was so successful that hundreds of americans were able to get out through this arrangement and, of course, the administration reporting they believe they have taken 6,000 americans out of afghanistan. So thats the arrangement with the taliban. But were also learning additional details about how u. S. Special operations forces also had their own secret arrangements to try to help americans get out. Yesterday the general who gave the first press announcing u. S. Troops left made an interesting reference saying that Special Forces had helped get more than 1,000 americans out of the airport. Out of kabul and out of the airport. Now we know more. What we know is that Special Operations forces basically set up their own secret gate at the airport. It was not acknowledged. It was an area that they were using to try and help americans get out. They were on the phone. They were in call centers as Special Operations forces. They were vectoring americans in. Basically in communication with them on phone saying walk here, walk there, turn here, turn there. Anything they could do in a very fraught situation. Full of people, of desperation trying to get out. Trying to help americans guide them through all of this. We had assumed a lot of this, i have to tell you, but now with the operation over, officials are acknowledging what has happened here, and they really do believe that all of these arrangements were very helpful in getting so many americans, not everybody, but getting so many americans out. And they also are making the point they are well aware there was a sacrifice a final sacrifice of so many american troops in that isis attack. Barbara, it is important hearing all of these details that youre gathering from these arrangement. Is it clear . Have you been able to find out how often this happened . Reporter we havent been able to learn the size of the groups. I think a pretty safe assumption is the size varied, because they wanted to keep, obviously, a very low profile. They knew there was an Isisk Threat at the Airport Area. They didnt want to have some highly visible group that was clearly americans with their bags and whatever luggage they had. You know, that could be clearly identified. All of this, of course, was happening also as other people were on buses, trying to get through the airport. So its it paints a picture, i think of the last days of this effort. Everybody working. Every thread, every stream, every possible channel of communications and help that they could to just get as many people out as they could. But what we know is this pragmatic relationship that the u. S. Military has described with the taliban had this other layer to it. Secret arrangements in one case. One point was an Interior Department of the Interior Ministry building quite close to the airport. People were told to go there. The taliban picked them up. Kate . Important details, barbara. Thank you for bringing it to us. Appreciate it. Were following more Breaking News. A Fastmoving Wildfire is forcing more than 50,000 people in california to leave the Lake Tahoe area. Theyre under a mandatory evacuation order. Some of the residents got stuck for hours in just the traffic, the lines of cars trying to get out because of the evacuation order. Joining me now is the mayor. For more on this, the mayor of south Lake Tahoe. She was one of the residents forced to evacuate along with everybody else. Thank you for being here. I saw, mayor, that you told a local station that a week ago if someone would have asked you, you thought there wasnt the slightest chance this fire was going to get to your city. Yesterday the entire city is told to evacuate. How did it change so fast . Honestly, i dont know. There was a huge amount of granite between the fire and us, and i woke up on sunday and it had. It had jumped that granite, and now its in the Lake Tahoe basin. And homes are threatened. And our community is threatened. And i never thought that that was possible. I think the population of the city is just over 20,000. And obviously we are looking at a Holiday Weekend ahead. I mean, do you know if everyone got out and really what this all means . Which is an important week for Lake Tahoe would be labor Day Weekend . Yes. I do know everyone was able to evacuate. The evacuation was actually very orderly. There was a lot of traffic, but we were able to evacuate our city in just five hours. Thats good. We do have an important Holiday Weekend. But we have good summers and so so labor day is the last hoorah. We have more to worry about than tourism right now. Were trying to take it in stride. Absolutely. Whats the latest youve heard. We had a colleague on the frontlines talking about how you could see the smoke enveloping him as he reported about the fire. Have you heard the status of things right now . When you could possibly head back in . Were not thinking about that. Right now the fire is raging through the Lake Tau Toe basin. Were not even considering talking about that. We will have a meeting later today via zoom because were all in different locations on the city council. Our emergency Operations Center has been moved into nevada. And our City Staff is working closely with the Incident Command for the fire. Were just right now trying to see what happens with the structures and businesses in our community and our homes. Absolutely. Well, mayor, thank you very much for your time. Good luck. Thank you. Now, this next story is something that should not happen in america. It is a truly tragic example of what Health Care professionals have been warning of since the start of the pandemic. If the system is overrun by covid patients, the system will fail. And it did. This is u. S. Army Veteran Daniel wilki wilkinson. He was awarded a purple heart. Last week he felt sick and went to the local hospital outside houston. He had gallstones. A painful disease, but one that is entirely fixable and treatable if treated on time. The Er Doctor who first saw him tried for seven hours to find a hospital with an available Icu Bed for him. All of the beds were full. Because of coronavirus. All full because millions of eligible people still arent vaccinated so the virus keeps going. And so 24 hours after this veteran walked in to his local er, he was dead at the age of 46. This should not happen in america. Joining me right now is the Doctor Who hetried to get danie the treatment he needed. An er physician. Doctor, thank you for coming on. I first learned of daniels tragic story from the fantastic reporting of David Begnaud of Cbs News. When i saw the report, i could not stop thinking about your conversations. I mean, you knew daniel needed more advanced level of care than your hospital offered. Tell me about how you tried all you tried to do to find him a bed to get him the treatment he needed. Thanks for having me on, kate. Yeah. First, i would like to thank the Cbs News team to do everything they could to get the story out there. And also michelle, Daniels Mother who gave us consent to tell the story. As she puts it, this is what daniel would have wanted. He wouldnt want this to happen to anybody else. When daniel came in, he was complaining of vague abdominal pain. We see a lot of patients with t that. We do labs to figure out our Thought Process of where to go. The labs came back. It was very consistent with gallstone pancreatitis. We have to do an Imaging Test to confirm the diagnosis. Were able to do it and we got a Ct Scan which confirmed that. That was around 1 30, 1 15 that the diagnosis came back. And immediately right after this, myself and the nurses and everyone there working in the er would get on the phone to call for a hospital that has the specialists and the Icu Capability because daniel was quickly deteriorating in front of us. And we kept getting the response sorry, were full. We have no icu capacity. We have no icu capacity. And it was about two hours into that ordeal, not being able to get a bed that i said why dont i try posting this on the Physician Community in facebook . Its one of the largest physician communities on facebook. I posted the situation, the Dire Straits that daniel was in and got a bunch of responses from doctors, some in missouri, one from austin. And unfortunately, all of that fell through. I called the numbers they told me to call, and there were no beds. Finally i got acceptance in denver in colorado. But by that time, we kept making Phone Calls and finally about five hours after the diagnosis was made, we got acceptance to the Houston V. A. But it proved that too much time had passed, and they were unable to fix the problem despite the v. A. s heroic efforts. I have to let everyone know, ive seen comments online about people trashing the v. A. Thats not the case. They did everything they could. Look, i mean, did you ever think that you would be up against something like this . I mean, im sure this has to be a doctors worst nightmare. Absolutely. And it was something that myself and all my physician colleagues, we knew this was an inettability. Dont get us wrong. Were in the worst crisis of the pandemic. We wish for 2020 again. I dont know how else to put it, kate. Right now we are my Physician Group that i work for, concord medical group, we staff hospitals all over texas, especially rural hospitals, and were seeing the same exact thing. Right now at the main hospital i work at in texas, we have 24 patients, 20 on the floor, 40 icu. One of them does not have covid. I just called this morning to get that update. We pride ourselves on giving the best evidencebased care to get the best care in the world wherever we practice. Our concord physicians, our Partnering Hospitals that we work with. Right now, kate, the bar is set to safe care. That was always a given. Now thats the goal. We had to downgrade two patients out of the icu who are still icu sick, because there were two other patients who were sicker and needed the beds more. Were making decisions that weve never had to make before. Thats so go ahead. I just were out of time, but i just thank you for your message. I mean, the message is loud and clear. This is preventable. It can be stopped. Doctor hassan should never have to be in this Position And Daniel wilkinson should be alive today. Thank you, doctor, for speaking up and for what you do. Thank you for joining us. Hello. Next hour the president will deliver his first remarks since ending the u. S. s longest war. The chaos and confusion, the failures and agony. And the successes of the final retreat out of afghanistan after 20 years. Thim
