The patients will die. And that is what we heard over and over again from these medical groups, from these Hospital Officials who continue to say, this is a matter of life and death. We do not care what else is Going On in the world. We understand that there is a shortage of oxygen but we need help because again this is a matter of life and death. Thank you very much, kristen. New day continues right now. Announcer this is cnn breaking news. Welcome to our viewers here in the United States and Around The World, im Brianna Keilar alongside John Avlon on this monday, august 30th. And breaking overnight, Hurricane Ida downgraded to a tropical storm but not before leaving behind catastrophic damage in louisiana. Right now at least one person is confirmed dead. 1. 1 Million customers are without power. This includes the entire City Of New Orleans. Exactly 16 years after Hurricane Katrina hit. Now, this storm has sent water topping levies. It has trapped people on their roofs. Rescue efforts are getting under way this morning here in the coming minutes, here in the next hour. And a live look now as ida is moving toward mississippi. There is still here a risk of dangerous Flash Floods, Storm Surge and possibly even tornadoes. Also breaking this morning, Rocket Fire Targeting afghanistans international airport. Video obtained by cnn shows the burnt out car that was apparently used as an improvised Launch Pad to fire five rockets. Five hours earlier the u. S. Carried out a preemptive Drone Strike on a potential Suicide Car Bomb in kabul calling it an imminent threat from isisk. Airport evacuations continue in the meantime with hundreds more citizens and allies trying to get out just 24 hours before the u. S. Troop withdrawal deadline. Cnns Clarissa Ward will join us ahead. Now, first as day is breaking in louisiana, we are starting now to get our first look at the destruction that has been left by Hurricane Ida. Cnns Derek Van Dam is live for us in hardhit houma, louisiana. Last we checked in with you, it was Pitch Black there. I think you were just kind of starting to get a sense of things. What are you seeing . Reporter yeah. R residents here endured the relentless fury of a category 4 hurricane that pivoted over this specific location. It was equivalent to feeling the direct hit of a 50 mile wide Ef3 Tornado lasting for several hours. You can imagine the damage that will unfold. In fact, my team and i were just talking a moment ago, we fear what we may see once The Sun actually rises within this area. Im going to have my Camera Man Pivot to my left or over my right shoulder i should say. This is just a drop of the larger bucket here. We have trees that have fallen on vehicles. We have damage to the hotel where we are located, windows were blown out. We had a Natural Gas Leak yesterday. This is just some of the many problems that are going to be unfolding throughout the area across the terrabonne paris near houma, louisiana. What an incredible experience for our crew, high anxiety, highly stressful and you can imagine we had a reenforced Concrete Building to ride out those winds. For several hours. You can imagine that some of the people not as fortunate. We only can think and pray for them this morning what they will find when they see first light. Back to you, john, brianna. Derek, look, well be checking in with you. We know that sunrise is here in the next 20 to 30 minutes. Thank you, derek. Ida has now weakened to a tropical storm, but it remains a real threat. Cnns meteorologist Chad Myers is tracking the storm s path. Chad, what are you seeing . John, its moved up into the southwestern part of mississippi now. Although that big Storm Surge threat and the 140 mileperHour Winds are all gone, our Threat Today will be the rainfall. And you know, 60 miles per Hour Wind gusts can bring down some trees. But its the rain that were watching now. Every county that you see here or parish if its in louisiana, all under Flash Flood warnings. I lost count at about 14. Because over here between hammond and laplace, you see purple, thats 10 inches of rain thats already fallen and more and some spots still seeing more rain. To the southeast we have the potential for some tornadoes today. And finally it moves off to the northeast but not before this stripe of 4 to 6 Inch Rainfall still exists from pennsylvania back down into Southeastern Ohio and then for, of course, parts of mississippi, alabama and even around memphis. Here is where the storm is going. This is what we know, this is 8 00 p. M. Central time. So its still moving to the north of Baton Rouge and farther to the north, puts Rain Down in memphis and nashville. 4 to 6 inches. We know whats happened in tennessee over the past couple weeks with all of that rain. That ground is still saturate and rain goes from Southeastern Ohio back into d. C. Well see some of this rain. By the time it gets there, 30 miles per Hour Wind, but its still there. The storm was a treacherous storm for a lot of people and dereks equivalent of an Ef3 Tornado going 30 miles wide going all the way up, lasting for hours where Ef3 Tornadoes can last you like 30 seconds by the time its gone. This was a long duration, long and big destruction event. Tell us a little bit more about the Flooding Risk that still exists as well as the potential Wind Damage that comes from that Tornado Equivalent for such a long period of time. Oh, i think were not going to believe what we see. What we see and, derek went through and his crew went through a significant eyewall. Didnt get to the eye. But he was on the easy side of this eye. The other side of the eye, which was about 25 miles across was worse. The damage over there will be more significant because you have to add in the movement of the storm and thats about 10 miles per hour and then 140 miles per hour, so there could have been some wind gusts over there at 150 without a question. Here is the rainfall coming down now. Some of these storms will rotate and, you know, the Flash Flooding is going to continue today for sure. And chad, i want to point out, were looking at a live look right now from gulf port, mississippi. This is what people are seeing as they drive down the highway in gulf port, mississippi, where the storm is going to be moving even further into mississippi later in the day as youve said. John that highway was covered up with water yesterday. That should be Highway 90 if i take a look at it. The water was completely out of the beach, over and into peoples lawns. Little clearer this morning but still as folks can tell a lot of water coming down and more to come. Chad myers, thank you very much. Youre welcome. Joining us now is fema administrator. Thank you so much. I know that youre still awaiting sunrise. Were really trying to get a grasp on what is happening so far, but we heard from the governor of louisiana, John Bel edwards that last night there were calls for help in Jefferson Parish but obviously conditions were so bad, winds were so strong you couldnt have emergency crews responding. And st. John the baptist Parish Inupdated with 911 rescue calls. Whats the status of things in louisiana from your Vantage Point . Good morning, brianna. Were hearing the same types of destruction that governor edwards mentioned. Ive been in communication with my regional administrator who was in Baton Rouge last night and again this morning. Were hearing about widespread structural damage. Significant structural damage. Several buildings that have potentially collapsed. A number of hospitals operating on Generator Power and we know some people are stranded that will need some assistance. This is going to have some significant impacts. These are just the initial report. Were going to see a lot more once the Assessment Teams get out early this morning. All right. So this thing hit as a strong category 4. And i know that youre still trying to assess what that means. But what is your expectation of what that means . Yeah. It remains a category 4 for several hours over the southern parts of louisiana. So they just got the impacts from the winds, from the significant and intense rainfall as well as that Storm Surge for several hours. I dont think there could have been a worse path for this storm. Its going to have some significant impacts. Were already seeing the Power Outages across the area and the Threat Isnt over. As you just heard, as it goes into mississippi, even tennessee and west virginia, theres still going to be significant rainfall. So those people that are in the Storms Track still need to stay aware of what their risks might be. Yeah. Look, weve seen here recently what Flash Flooding can do. I mean, we have seen how devastating it can be. You are as you mentioned obviously in touch with the leadership there in louisiana. Do you think that state and local officials have a good handle on their response . Absolutely. We have never had a better relationship with the state and local Emergency Management officials. And the first responders, they are ready. Theyre going to be doing an amazing job. A lot of hard work over the next several days. And its important to remember that they are probably impacted as well. They are some of the best that louisiana has and its just going to be a tough couple of days as we go through the initial Response Efforts and the recovery is just going to take a long time. What is the flooding like as you understand it . And how is this impacting people in residential areas who stayed in their homes . Again, some of the initial reports that i have is we knew there was going to be some overtopping of some of the levies in the southern pars of louisiana. My initial reports are the levies around new orleans did what they were supposed to do but that intense rainfall, thats going to create a lot of urban flooding across many of the jurisdictions, new orleans, Baton Rouge and all of the different localities in between. And its going to strain the system. Its going to strain the drainage system. That with the debris, so its going to take a while for some of that to clear up. We have the Army Corps of engineers ready to support some of the Emergency Debris Removal and we have the u. S. Coast guard that is prepared and ready to go out and start some of the Search And Rescue efforts that might be needed. We saw this so strong winds of 150 miles per hour Storm Surge that it actually stopped and then reversed the course of the Mississippi River. What is the effect of that . You know, i heard that as well. Im not sure what the impacts are going to be from that. But again, i think the one piece that was lucky on this is the Mississippi River was lower than it normally is. I mean so we didnt see the rise in the mississippi that it could have caused more significant damage. But as we go out and do assessments this morning, were going to start to see what those impacts are. Yeah. I think were going to see that here shortly in the next 20 minutes well see The Sun come up here. Administrator, thank you for being with us here on new day. Brianna, thank you so much. Louisiana is really dealing with a double punch here, overwhelmed hospitals from covid, even before the hurricane struck, well talk about how doctors there are racing to save lives. With one of its generators failed, leaving Hospital Staff scrambling to move patients out of the affected area. Patients on ventilators had to be bagged by hand which means Hospital Staff had to manually push air in and out of the patients lungs. The patients then had to be transported throughout the Hospitals Stairwell to another part of the hospital that still had power. Ceo of the regional Health System Greg stock joins us now. Greg, thank you for joining us. Where do things stand this morning. Do you have everything up and running . Yes, we do. We do. And you gave a great description of that. During the storm yesterday, two of our five generators automatically stopped working. And they serve the area critical access, Critical Care areas of one of them. What happened as far as we can tell is they actually were working just fine. That 100 plus miles an Hour Wind was blowing in just the right direction where the exhaust of the hot air out of that area where those generators are located did not occur. And you know, when a generator is on full load, they create a lot of heat. What happened it just heated that room up so much that the generator shut off on their own. So, we had to cool them down. We had to figure out of course we dont control the wind, how to get it right and things like that. In the meantime, we have these patients good number of them are covid patients in intensive Caretype Unit patients. Some of them fairly young but very sick that we had to do something with so we acted very quickly. And you described it. It was amazing thing to see. I would say i was here in this hospital during katrina and it reminded me of that. Dwroun, you plan for things, backup generators, beyond what you need, executed our plan really well over time. But here is a curveball that comes in. Then its how good your people are and how well they work together. So we had lots of really great staff who work in the intensive Care Unit Staff joined by other nurses, respiratory therapists, physicians so on and the Decisionmaking Process unfolded right there. I watched it, part of it. And moving patients down the stairwells is kind of one of the last things you want to do. But, it was another section of the hospital in our Op Rating Room areas and Recovery Room areas that was functional, we got them there, we got all the equipment. Its incredible. Incredible act of teamwork, all of those patients are good. Its amazing, just amazing to go in there and see that but we cool the generator sets off, started them back up. Tested them. We let them run for an hour or so and they ran all night. Theyre operating just as they are designed to. And that teamwork you described that dedication is so extraordinary. The preparation worked. But how long is the power out . It was out for several hours. That occurred right during kind of the height of the storm. I might add in this region there were three other hospitals seriously disabled one of the roof blew off, big section of the roof. Both the others had huge roof damage, one had their Elevator Shaft Hold water and the water just from there traveled throughout the hospital. Disabled them but the fourth hospital in the region also as we understand it had a pretty Big Hole blown in it and lost one of their generators. So, you know, in those situations, theyre very challenging. They have these patients and youre responsible for them. We make that commitment. We stay here. We feel prepared and have our teams together and so forth. And then you have to go with what actually happened. So, you know, the fact that were really able to provide Quality Care in that situation and continue on is were somewhat blessed. The rest of it is to stay very focussed. We teach this a lot, work on it a lot and use your Head And Act and be a Leader And Work as a team. Those things sound simple, but theyre very powerful things when it comes to addressing a disaster like this. They sure are. And 16 years to the date after Hurricane Katrina, all that training paid off for you and your team. Greg stock, thank you very much for joining us on new day. Thank you. Thank you. Defenses shooting down as many as five rockets fired at Kabuls Airport as the u. S. Draw down from afghanistan is entering the final 24 hours. This is video that shows the car believed to be behind this attack, which as you can see is now incinerated and the White House says president biden has been briefed on this. The Rocket Attack that we are told came from this car. The administration is also now addressing concerns about what will happen to those people who are still in afghanistan after u. S. Troops pull out, including some americans and many Green Card holders and a number that we actually dont have a grasp on at this point in time. Cnns Jeff Zeleny is live for us at the White House with new numbers on the evacuations overnight. What are they telling us, jeff . Reporter well, brianna, good morning. White house officials say 1,200 people have been evacuated over the last 24 hours in kabul. Of course thats a significantly smaller number than in the previous days before. And one of the reasons for that, we are told s that Force Protection is now the highest priority on the ground at the airport. That is protecting u. S. Forces there. They certainly are letting a smaller number of people in as the critical hours wind down in afghanistan. There is no sense, of course, as we know by now that this deadline is going to be extended. This is the last 24 hours of americas longest war. But the president was briefed overnight, as you said, on that Rocket Attack that we saw images of right there. The incinerated vehicle that fired the rocket. The president briefed overnight by his national Security Adviser and White House Chief Of Staff ron klain. The president were told in that briefing reaffirmed his commitment to protecting u. S. Forces on the ground. So they simply do not want another attack there. But everyone is certainly on edge here as well as at the State Department and at the pentagon. But as you said, there is a commitment to still trying to help those on the ground there. We do not have an exact number of people, of course, but the u. S. , as well as more than half of governments from Around The World signed a document on sunday, affirming the Talibans Commitment to getting people out who have the documents. Of course, that is very much an open question if that will happen. We know the president will be briefed here by his advisers this morning. As of now, hes not scheduled to make any remarks that could change, but this is a significant day here on the eve of the final day of the war. Brianna . Yeah. This is the difficult part of the administration. We know there are widespread reports of the taliban not allowing people in who have the proper documents, whether that is visas or whether that is american residents who have Green Cards or even americans who have passports. Jeff, thank you so much for the latest on the numbers from the White House. Sure. Now lets get more on the rockets intercepted by u. S. Defenses near Kabuls Airport. Joining us now from afghanistan on the phone is the middle East Bureau Chief with the Los Angeles times. Nabih what can you tell us about the rockets fired at Kabuls Airport. Well that was some time in the morning and they activated the C Ram Defense system near the airport as well. But right now the main thing were tracking right now is the issue of the Air Strike yesterday. And the fact that it might have hit the wrong target. Its unclear at the moment but it seems that there was an Air Strike that killed ten civilians including seven children. Thats been the main concern this morning for most of us here in kabul as journalists. And what is the feeling in the streets of kabul right now . You are there on americas final day. What are you seeing . What are you hearing . What are you feeling . Of course theres apprehension throughout. As you can imagine right now so much is unknown at the moment in terms of how the taliban will be behaving in the coming days once the Worlds Attention wanes and stops looking at kabul. The fact of the matter is the taliban there are all these rumors or all these reports of Door To door searches and persecution of former members of the government. And also at the same time, you have full throated economic crisis in the making here because right now there arent enough dollars in the country and seeing long lines at banks with people basically being limited in their withdrawal to 200 or 10,000 afghani for every two days. This is really quite a big problem and going to get worse. And with all that being said, you have to issue women, are they allowed to work . You know, whether theyll just be like sequestered in their homes like they have been in the past. Sure. The new york times reporting that hundreds of students and staff from American University Of Afghanistan who are trying to flee were told to return home that there would be no more rescue flights from Kabul Airport. Now, this is within the window. There are still 24 hours until the deadline. What does that say about the free flow and the talibans promises of guaranteeing that flow before the deadline . Well, the fact of the matter is its been winding down other the last two days. So even yesterday we saw actually emails from the american embassy saying that its only for u. S. Citizens, those with sivs or other statuses they would no longer be allowed to go. Then at the same time you have the issue that the buses right now are being severely curtailed in terms of going in. I personally know a few groups have been trying to go in the last few days and werent allowed to do so. It really is very, very difficult and more than likely all these people will be left behind. Its more than likely that all will be left behind. Now, you recently went on a taliban patrol. And we have video you shot in a vehicle with the taliban. What did you learn . Do you believe that they are capable of bringing security to kabul . Well, they have been trying to do so. Its worth noting the taliban are also as surprised as anyone else how fast they were able to take kabul. They are scrambling to secure their control of the capital. To be fair to them, they are they have managed to infiltrate the Military And Police stations. Kabul is a huge area for them to patrol and control. Its no surprise there would be issues. Of course if you look at what happened around thursday with the bombings, that has called into question whether the Taliban D bring the Security And Stability they have been promising for so long. With that being said, they were the main threat back in today with kabul security. Now with them in government, the equation has changed. Its whether they can control Suicide Bomb ersbombers. One of many questions looming other kabul, 24 hours to date until the american deadline. Nabih, thank you for joining us live from kabul. Thank you. Cnns Clarissa Ward is actually with us now. Shes joining us live from neighboring pakistan. Nabih says its inevitable that people will be left behind, including americans and Green Card holders, clarissa. Reporter well, brianna, that certainly how it looks from where were standing. Ive been talking to people, as i know you and so many others have as well who are Green Card holders. Who are sivs, Special Immigrant Visa holders, who are american passport holders. I was on the phone earlier today with a family of four from houston, texas. They went other to visit their grandparents and got caught up in this whole mess and now cannot leave the country. And the mother told me that they have gone for two weeks now to the airport. They have trouble getting past that taliban check point. They have reached out to the u. S. Military who has said they are doing everything they can. But the understanding thats being related to many people on the ground, even those who do have american passports, is that in these final hours, the gates are closed. It is not possible or, you know, it does not seem to be possible, according to people who are on the ground and trying to get in, to get past those gates at this time. Now, that does make sense when you think of where we are in this u. S. Evacuation, which are the very final hours essentially. This is the most sensitive time. This is where america is sort of takes its perimeter, brings it in, starts to destroy equipment it cant take, load the equipment it can take. So its in some ways the most vulnerable part of the entire evacuation operation. Given what we have seen at Kabul Airport, the constant stream of rockets, the threat of a suicide born ied from a Vehicle Yesterday that was taken out with a Drone Strike, of course the Massive Attack on thursday, i mean, all of this i think gives you a sense of why the Security Situation is so sensitive and why it is so difficult for u. S. Forces to try to bring out more people. You heard from Jeff Zeleny as well, those numbers are coming down. Saturday to sunday, 2,900. Sunday to monday, were down to just over 1,000. So, we are in the final phases. And i think the u. S. Military and many other forces internationally are now relying on the taliban that they will keep their word and let people out who have the appropriate documentation, even after the deadline has passed. Clarissa, thats the thing. Yes, we need to acknowledge over 113,000 people have been evacuated since august 14th. But already people who have the appropriate paperwork, american passports, Green Card holders, are not able to get to the airport. And this ambiguous deal thats being discussed by the White House, saying they have a deal with the taliban to help Get Americans and other foreign nationals out after the deadline passes, what do you know about what that looks like and is there any rational reason to think those folks will have better access to the airport once the taliban control it than they do today . Well, i mean, its a really important question, john. You raise also really important point which is this has been an extraordinary effort by the u. S. Military. And not like anything else that i can think of that we have seen in history in terms of the scale of this air lift evacuation. It really has surpassed everybodys expectations and nonetheless there are a lot of people who are getting left behind as we discussed not just siv holders, some americans potentially as well and Green Card holders and also people who are human rights activists, feminists, people with the afghan forces, a lot of people who think their lives are in immediate danger or under threat. The main leverage that the u. S. Has in terms of the international community more broadly i would say is twofold. Number one, the Taliban Does not want to be an international pariah again. They have experienced that in the late 90s. They know how difficult it was. And they know as well that theyre going to be very challenged as you heard Nabih Point out in terms of security, in terms of governance they need all the help they can get, so they need help from international partners and perhaps even more importantly they need funding. They need aid. They need money. And in order to get that, they need to play ball with the demands and with the sort of expectations of the international community. Now, the problem you always have is that you can have the message set on high from the sort of elite leaders that nobody is to be touched and theyre to be protected and given amnesty and they can leave if they want to but then you also have situations on the ground where fighters may be behaving with imimpunity or carrying out retaliatory attacks. Its difficult to contain that particularly as youre facing a really challenging Security Situation. You have huge crowds outside the banks. They have enormous challenges facing them in the coming weeks and months. So it becomes harder i think for many people on the ground to take them at their word even if it might be in their best Interest Visavis Support from the international community. Well, Clarissa Ward, thank you very much as always from your reporting. Well be talking to you soon. Up next, Hurricane Ida leaving a major u. S. City completely without power. Right now its a tropical storm and it has carved out a Devastating Path Of Destruction through louisiana where one person is confirmed dead and levies have been overrun. Nadia ramiro is live for us on the ground in new orleans. Nadia, were seeing daybreak since we last spoke to you. What are you seeing now . Reporter yeah. Its a welcome sight, brianna, to finally have a little bit of light out here so we can see. We have all been using head lamps and flash lights to get around for the first hours of the morning. Now we can see a little bit more of the damage that happened after Hurricane Ida made her way through. So if you look behind me, the streets are pretty empty but theres just trash. Not like a normal morning after on Bourbon Street. If you go down to the iconic magazine street, thats where youre going to see signs of the power outage, right . So we know that some of those trees fell on to Power Lines and that helped to knock out the power for many of these neighborhoods, but we also had eight Transmission Lines responsible for bringing that power to the entire City Of New Orleans, that was comp romised. It was eerie and spooky to be on Bourbon Street, really quiet any ways but then not to have any kind of light or signs of life after the storm was just an odd thing to experience this morning. So were still waiting to hear how long it might be before the City Of New Orleans gets lights back on. Thats why the governor is telling people it could be weeks because theres a Priority List of where they start with hospitals and nursing homes. Thats top of the list. Then they work their way through neighborhoods. So if youre in a neighborhood you may not get your lights turned back on this week. You may have to wait longer. We also know that there are along with the Power Outages we saw levies toppled and people who have to be rescued from their attics and from their roofs, further south of here, towards where the storm first made landfall, that seems to be the area hardest hit at least with the rain. And this part of louisiana we dealt with the effects of the wind. So now that we have a little bit of The Sunlight coming out this morning, were going to try to get out and do a better assessment of the damage that were seeing and figure out how many people are still trapped in their homes because ems lines, 911 lines were compromised as well. Those went down. They were not taking any calls. Cell Phone Service is still out in the City Of New Orleans. So if youre trying to communicate, it will be awful hard to do without wifi and without Cell Phone Service along with the power being out. A lot of issues and complications were still dealing with just a day after Hurricane Ida made her way through. Brianna . Day has dawned there in new orleans, nadia, well let grow so you can go see what damage has been done. Thank you so much. Now lets bring in a former admin stray fort federal Emergency Management agency. Good to see you. Sun is rising in louisiana, revealing the damage and the devastation but the danger is not over. What is your primary concern at this point . Well, unfortunately i dont know if people are going to hear this where its really hit because of all the Power Outages but the best thing people can do right now if youre safe, stay home. Stay inside. Let the rescue team ss, utiliti begin their work. Stay off the roads. Our experience has been we have a tendency to have more people die after hurricanes because of accidents, traffic crashes. We know the hospitals are stressed from covid. If we can get people to stay home, stay off the road, let rescuers and utility crews do their jobs before people go out and see how bad it is, we can keep people safe. We had reports of people calling for rescue, but of course during the height of the storm, thats just not possible. And the focus now is on that Search And Rescue. National Weather Service reporting that Heavy Rain is causing Flash Flooding in laplace, trapping residents at a local hotel. Theyre calling for rescue. Will first responders be able to get to them . And what sometime frame given your experience . Well, theyve already been going. They didnt wait for The Sun to come up and they didnt wait for the winds to die down. In some cases its basically having to find a way in. Some places they have to stop putting the boats in the water because the roads are still flooded. But theyll be working from the list that came in but also areas they know have devastation to get in there and check on folks. So this was if you look at what governor edwards and the team does and louisiana, this is something they really refined over the last years, lessons of katrina is theyre bringing in a lot of resources. You have a lot of Volunteer Agencies and its really this race to get into areas. And in some Cases Debris has to be cleared first. Power lines have to be saved. This is Search And Rescue day. This is get to People Today and do those rescues. There are lives on the line today. You mentioned the lessons learned from katrina. 16 years ago. Real massive investment to try to mitigate the effects of future hurricanes. In this case we saw a Catastrophic Blackout In new orleans. We dont know the full extent of the damage in the southern areas, but what are you making of the federal response so far . And whether the region is passing the test given the investment made in the wake of katrina. Well, again, the federal response started days ago when the Hurricane Center said this could potentially become a major hurricane well before it did. The question now is we made a lot of investments. People focus on the levy system, but we also built back a lot of buildings, schools, fire stations, Police Stations in the areas that have been hit. It will be important to see how that is. This is critical, we must continue to apply the lessons not to build it back the way it was. But to build it for future risk because new orleans didnt they got the water. This storm revealed new risks and new vulnerabilities to the high wind. The important lesson here is Rescue Today but in the future we start rebuild ing, weve got to build to what climate is driving and adapt to that, not just build it back to what it once was. Build it back better as someone once said. Appreciate your time. Coast guard teams are gearing up to make arial rescues. Hospitals in parts of the south are running out of oxygen as coronavirus cases and hospitalizations soar. This is a surge driven by those who remain unvaccinated and also the spread of the delta variant. Several hospitals in florida, south carolina, texas, and louisiana are all reaching dangerously low amounts of oxygen. Many are relying on reserve tanks, and a Hospital Supply Purchasing group says the worsthit hospitals have 12 to 24 Hours Worth of oxygen left. So i so. So imagine surviving combat twice only to come home and die of a gallstone because there were no beds when you needed them. This is the horror of one mother enduring this in texas. A purple Heart Recipient, a casualty of covid, despite never even have ing contracted the virus. He waited for seven hours for an icu bed. Despite doctors best efforts to find space to save his life, only to eventually pass way from what is a completely treatable ailment. With us now is dannys mother, michelle puget. Michelle, i am so sorry for your loss. Thank you. And first if you could just tell us, this is the Side Effect of these icus that are so full. And now your family has paid this ultimate price. Can you tell us, first tell us a little bit about danny. Danny was pretty much a biggerthanlife personality. He was a wonderful son. When he made a friend, he made a friend for life and a brother to all of his army buddies. He took care of me for two years while i was going through breast cancer. Taking care of me completely as far as my appointments, my chemos and everything. But all rolled up into one, he was a big teddy bear. A big teddy bear. Were seeing a picture of him now. And we know how much youre hurting. Weve talked to so many people who have lost their Family Members because of coronavirus. That is not why he died. No. Although, in a way, it is because of that, because of how full the icus are. Can you tell us about what happened . He was diagnosed with Gallstone Pan Ko panceatitis. Then what happened . After the doctor made the diagnosis, they told me he was pretty sick. They started running the labs and whatever tests he needed to have done, and he discovered that he had gallstone p pancreatitis. I cant say it this morning, im sorry. He said if he doesnt have this special procedure done, he will die. And danny, at that point and everything, was still talking. A and was able to discuss what he needed me to do. They fought for a bed for seven hours, to try to get him into an icu. They called all the hospitals in texas, oklahoma, arkansas, kansas and colorado. And there wasnt a bed for him. And every minute that he was being rejected an icu bed, he was dying. The Bile And Everything was backing up into his system and his organs were already starting to shut down. So seven hours later, they were able to get him to the va. And it was too late. They were unable to stabilize him. His Blood Pressure kept dropping down into the 40s and 50s. So those hours were very, very important. Those minutes were very important. And those hours and minutes werent there because of how full the hospitals are. Look, i know nothing can bring danny back, but i wonder what your message is as youre reflecting on this backup that cost his life. Well, its not ive heard from the doctors that they have icu beds. They just dont have the personnel to man them. And the shortage of nurses. The doctor and i were talking after the fact. And when the pandemic first came out, they threw up all these tent hospitals. The ships were there to take patients and everything. We dont see any of that in any of the states Going On. And if they did the military could come in with their medical staff and help. I just think Thats Something that needs to be considered. Because, you know, my children, my daughter and my nephews, my grandsons, dannys nephews and everything, they lost a wonderful person in their life. And im just hopin
