They said the following. This is an extremely dangerous category for a hurricane nearing the southeastern coast of louisiana, Hurricane Force winds now moving on shore. Lets get a closeup and you can get a better idea of whats happening. Youll see Grand Isle on top of your screen. Just below there, port forshaun, a key place for oil and gas. From cocodrie you can see how these tides have risen in these bays of louisiana. That shows the eye just offshore. Its moving about 15 miles per hour which means Storm Surge is moving quickly into areas like Grand Isle where we do know a Couple Dozen residents decided to stay behind. Were going live to many reporters and local officials in louisiana in the next hour, but lets begin with Chad Meyers who can break down the latest forecast for us. Chad, this is not just Rapid Intensification. Its almost like we need a new term for what this is. People went to bed and they saw a category 2 storm. Theyre now seeing a hurricane on the verge of cat 5. Yesterday the storm tried to do an r. I. , Rapid Intensification. The sun, i believe, and the warmth of the day got away. When that sun went down last night, brian, the atmosphere decoupled and everything just went crazy. The water was warm, the at atmosphere got cooler and the air wanted to go up. Heres why this is such an important event. I know you think 75 miles per hour, 150 miles per hour, oh, thats two times worse. No, no, it is not linear. It is not linear. You have to go all the way here from a category 1, we call that a onetime storm. When you get down to ida because of the logarhythm for the people. An outer Eye Wall coming down to Grand Isle. Winds there have been at least 75, doppler indicated, and then to the far north and west, we have tornadoes possible. The tornadoes could be significant. Remember, katrina had 59 tornadoes with it, and this is actually for that matter, katrina came on shore at 130 . This is 150. Just as close, it does not have bigger arms. That surge is going to go up maybe 15 feet, especially in the bayou here around Grand Isle, that water is going to go up and its going to try to make itself way up to the mississippi river. But its not going to get there because there is a levee there. Where will it go when it gets this far up . Will it breach other levees that arent so high. 110mileanhour winds are possible in louisiana proper. For most of that land you need an Air Boat and there is a lot of water still down there and it is still very warm, and its going to keep going to the north over the next couple days and finally get offshore sometime during middle of next week. Louisiana used to look like a boot and it doesnt anymore, because weve lost so much coastline. Weve lost so much there. Does that mean that areas like homa and New Orleans are in more danger because weve lost so much coastline . Absolutely. Because Theres Water now where there used to be dirt. You look at a map of louisiana and you go, oh, thats just dirt down there. No, it isnt. Its wet. Theres ditches and swamps. The ditches and swamps are wet and they are warm. That Water Isnt any cooler than the gulf of mexico. When this thing runs out of shore, it isnt going to run out of steam, its going to keep going for a while. Were going to see 10 to 20 in inches of rainfall. Surge likely. Well also see flooding in the rainfall and tornadoes are possible, too. All of the hazards are as high as they can get with this big storm. We know the right Front Quadrant of what to watch in the next couple hours. Is the right Front Quadrant going to get the worst of the landfall . Yes. Absolutely. Then on up into that bayou there to the West And South of the mississippi river. Thats the area that will get the water pushed up into here. Theres not going to be as much water over here, but there will be surge, probably 5 to 10 feet over here. There will be 15 feet in these levees and bayous and these ditches will be covered up. Even homa is 10 over sea level. Chad, thank you. Well come back in a little bit. Darrell is in homa. Tell us about the phone that rang off the hook. Reporter we are staring at the eye of a monster, and just moments ago we received the national Weather Report from the weather service, threatening wind events moving into a particular area. Im looking at homa, louisiana. Weve had sustained tropical force winds, the storm of major Hurricane Ida only 60 miles from where i am. So Hurricane Winds are approaching because they extend roughly about 40 miles from the center of this hurricane. So we are feeling the conditions go downhill rather quickly here, and we know the threats going forward. This is a Monster Storm that is potentially life threatening in this particular area with Storm Surge and catastrophic winds already approaching the louisiana coastline. Brian . Its going to be a long day for you. Welcome back to you, darren. Lets go to New Orleans where there is an alert about the 911 system. Nadia is in New Orleans. Where in New Orleans are you, nadia . Reporter i am on iconic Bourbon Street. We are starting to feel that extreme wind you heard derek just talking about as the wind starts to pick up and the rain starts to pick up waiting for the biggest impact of Hurricane Ida. These shops all along Bourbon Street along the French Quarter have all been shut down over the weekend. There are a few shops open. They say they stayed open for katrina, they are not shutting down for ida. There are people all along here as people brace for the storm. This is a tourist destination, and there are a lot of people who are trapped here because they were waiting until the last minute to take that flight back to where they came from. We met people from New Jersey and they said, were used to storms. They never experienced a hurricane. They thought they would be able to get out in time, but yesterday the airport shut down. Today people stuck here to ride out the storm. Brian . We just received this alert from the city of New Orleans. The 911 systems are experiencing temporary difficulties, they say. So if people are watching, the number is 5848212222. As you can see, were across the state of louisiana. Were going live to Baton Rouge as well, and well keep an eye on the webcams as this Northern Eyewall approaches the louisiana coast. Well see that Storm Surge live and well bring it to you as we do. Turning to reliable sources, were going to bounce back and forth from our Weather Coverage to our Media Coverage this hour. Im going to start with one simple question. How will the world know what is happening in afghanistan now . With so many journalists v evacuating, how will we know . Two short weeks ago, this reporting on tolonews. A senior journalist interviewing a member of the taliban. The Anchors Name is esbeh beheshta arghand. She was breaking ground. She was doing something she dreamed about in school. In Ninth Grade she decided she had to become a journalist. She even delivered News Reports to her class like she was the anchor on tv. Then she enrolled at kabul university. She studied journalism for four years. She landed the big job at t tolonews. Then her world fell apart. Interviewing the taliban official On The Air was so difficult, she told me, but she did it for afghan women. Her English Isnt perfect, but her message was crystal clear. She told us, quote, One Of Us must start, if we stay in our offices or dont go out of our houses, i said, start working. I said to the taliban member, we want our rights, we want to work, we must be in society. This is our right. Arghand dmaemanded womens righ. She insisted the taliban must respect and empower women. She did it on national television. And im afraid youre guessing what happens next. And your suspicions are right. Last Weekend Arghand decided she had to leave afghanistan. The dangers were too much. She reached out to malala asking for help, and she was evacuated to doha. She said, i left the country, because like many people, i fear the taliban. But she also said this. If the taliban did what they promised and the situation becomes better and i know there is no threat for me, i will go back to my country and i will work for my country for my people. This is precisely the Brain Drain that so many experts have been warning about, a Brain Drain from afghanistan. News outlets continue to evacuate staffers and workers and families this week, but the american Withdrawal Deadline means the window is closing and may have already closed. So who will tell Afghanistans Story . Joining me to take us behind the scenes of the Evacuation Efforts is the Executive Director of Reporters Without Borders usa anna nelson. And azmat zahra. Azmat, what have you heard . Have many left afghanistan at this point . Most of the journalists being evacuated are journalists who lived In Kabul, so people in some of the more rural places like kandahar, elsewhere, have been having trouble. They also oftentimes dont have the Paperwork And Documentation ready that made it easy for them to enter the airport. For example, many friends of my own, we could get people on a flight manifest. We could get them a seat. We could put them in a convoy. We could prepare the documents that they needed, and they would approach the airport and get turned around. And this was happening repeatedly over the last week. Some of them have made it through. Others now it looks like their next best option is going by land through pakistan, and thats where there is a lot of engagement happening with the pakistani authorities to try to facilitate that, and especially those without passports. What have you experienced with Reporters Without Borders . They have been able to evacuate dozens of staffers and family members, folks who drove cars and cooked for correspondence in afghanistan. But it seems some of the independent journalists, reporters, stringers, have had a harder time evacuating. That is exactly the case, that is true. What she has been describing, we had persons on planes. We had people in particular willing to take them in. We just couldnt get them to the airport. And thats just tragic when you think how close so many got, and i its worth pointing out we had estimated there are 12,000 journalists, 1,500 of whom are women in afghanistan. So those who did get out are just a tiny percentage of people who are at Grave Risk now. The big, broad question i have for both of you, and azmat, ill start with you, how will the world know what happens in afghanistan in the coming months . I think this will really come down to what kind of Leverage And Engagement there is with the taliban. Remember, the taliban has been making promises, saying theyre going to respect journalists. I think its up to organizations and governments to really hold them to those promises and to use the different kinds of leverage they have to ensure that they stick to them. Now, i would also caution that the situation In Kabul is going to be different than other parts of the country. So there are major News Organizations like tolonews who have, you know, Senior Heads like Sawed Mohenci who have been asking for that kind of Engagement And Sticking to promises who i think are going to do a relatively strong job of advocating for their yu journalists. But i think in rural areas where its hard to access people on the ground, where Power Lines get cut more often, its going to be tough there, and News Organizations have to learn from Health Organizations and other ngos who have operated in those areas to try to understand the work they were doing in the past few years in an effort to try to replicate it or at least hire from them and train a new generation of journalists. Its hard work, but people need to be creative about reaching those areas. We already dont hear from them enough, and were threatened not to hear from them more. One thing i noticed today when the u. S. Targeted an airstrike on what they said were Suicide Bombers at the airport, an nbc producer, a journalist working for cnn In Kabul. Were avoiding bylines to try to protect people who are in afghanistan. Is there a fear that the country will become a Black Hole for news . Thats exactly the word i would use, is a Black Hole. The journalism will not just dissipate but disappear completely. That is a very, very real concern. Of course, we have heard the taliban on their offensive saying they will protect Press Freedom, and i hope that those in charge now do understand that a Functioning Society depends on a functioning situation of Press Freedom that journalists are able to do their job. One of my main concerns is for those female journalists, both the ones with experience and those who were just starting down that path of a dream of becoming a journalist in afghanistan, that their voices, their stories wont be told because theyre not represented. Thats my concern as well. The anchors that fled, like basta, who felt she couldnt stay there anymore. More about afghanistan after the break and questions about News Coverage. Plus why management needs a new Host Stat for nbc. Hear from the editor of one of the newspapers. Were going to keep bouncing back and forth with News Coverage. Im brian stelter. Lets Measure Coverage of afghanistan. Many are clutching onto hope. We continue to see evacuations from the country, although it has really slowed down in the past couple of days since the bombing at the airport. This is a complicated, consequential international story, but all of it is covered through a political lens. I want to ask several guests if the media has been missing the mark in coverage of the withdrawal and in the events of afghanistan. Is the story being too simplified . Lets bring back azrat khan, shes back with me. James fallows and eric boehlert. What has gone wrong with the coverage in your view . The american media have three big responsibilities. Number one, to tell the story and humanize the story, and i think with some obvious exceptions, there has been a lot of coverage of the news and people understand the drama of whats happening on the ground. The second thing the media need to be involved in is accountability on how these things happen, on the military side, the civilian side. The third thing the media needs to do is keep this in perspective in hoistorical term, and there has been an instant equation with The Fall Of Kabul and The Fall Of Saigon, and they are not similar except for the picture of helicopters. Keeping things in perspective is where the media has fallen shortest on the media side. So The Fall Of Saigon which we heard a lot about two weeks ago, youre saying theyre beside the point . To say whats happening In Kabul now, tragic as it is, is similar to that. There were almost 20 times the amount of americans killed in vietnam, there were similar casualties in southeast asia. The boat people, 100,000 drowned. You said off the air this is not about the last two weeks. Most americans have been ignoring afghanistan for years. Its true. I think that as u. S. Troops withdrew from the country in 2014, you also saw News Organizations dedicate less attention to the country. Now, there are some notable exceptions to that. There has been a group of afghan reporters at the New York Times who have just really been on it in terms of tracking casualties, but we tend to see the most accountability reporting, the most investigations happen when u. S. Soldiers are dying. So even though the war was continuing at Record Pace, we were dropping more bombs at Record Pace in afghanistan in 2019. Media coverage was at some of its lowest that year. It has terrible effects, and what i mean by that is many americans are watching whats happening In Kabul right now as its unfolding and that is informing their decision about whether or not the u. S. Should have withdrawn rather than some of the events in the last few years, including, for example, the fact that isisk, which carried out the attack on thursday, has been staging similar attacks for years. And the united states has been Dropping Bombs on them, large ones, the mother of all bombs, in fact, a bomb that was more than 21,000 pounds, to no avail. So the question really is, what would be different, and are we getting the context to know that, to have an informed debate about this war . Eric boehlert, youre up next. Trying to get people out of afghanistan and then the bombing happened. Have you seen a change the last two days . Yeah, after the bombing, there was less need for The Press to inject drama. I think The Press got kind of married to the storyline. V doomsday, Biden Teetering on collapse. The Media Consensus was we probably will evacuate 20,000 to 30,000 people. Were up to 110,000. Bidens Approval Rate is down 2. 5 points in the last two weeks. This is to a drumbeat of relentless 24 7 kabul coverage. Before the bombing, the Story Kind of pivoted but The Press didnt pivot. I think with that horrendous attack, we saw more straightforward News Coverage rather than lets inject drama into this. Just a quick Data Point on the lack of coverage prior to this year. Abc, cbs, nbc evening news, 20 20, Afghan Kovrnl for the entire year. Lets go deeper on that, james. There is so much news this year, the covid crisis. What do you say about how much afghanistan should be the front Page Story versus covid or Climate Change or other stories . I think that a challenge for us in the media is to try to keep multiple things in view. The hardest things about being president , i say, having worked in the White House decades ago for jimmy carter, is that the president is having to deal with emergencies on all fronts all the time, and for those of us in the media, governments need to think about what to do thinking about Climate Change, thinking about covid, thinking about afghanistan. There is a famous line adopted from matthew arnold, see things steady and see things whole. We cant always do that because essentially whats on tv Commands Attention right now, but having that in the back of our mind that this is what our governments are dealing with and our citizens should be aware of these multiple challenges, too. Thank you a lot for the confrontation. We have the latest on a Scan P Dal shaking Abc News. Were following Hurricane Ida. Hurricane ida nowlouisianak neighbor, about to do serious damage. A landfall at 150mileperhour winds would make ida the strongest hurricane ever to make landfall in louisiana. Right now the national Hurricane Center says winds are at 150 miles per hour. Right now that is a strong category 4 hurricane. This is the first landfalling hurricane in the united states this season and one of the worst in decades. Lets look at this closeup radar. This is really key now as we get close to landfall, and youll see the Northern Eyewall now approaching Grand Isle. Grand isle is going to be in that Northern Eyewall in the next couple hours. There are, i believe, a Couple Dozen residents who have stayed on Grand Isle. For more on that, lets bring in cynthia lee shang. The eyewall reaches into Grand Isle. Cynthia, what do you know . We had a camera on them but we lost it. We know they lost electricity, so we hope to be in communication with them. I spoke to the mayor of Grand Isle Yesterday Evening and he thought there was about 40 people left on the island. Our concern is with them. Theyre going to start really getting hit hard. Were okay here. Im located in gretna in the greater New Orleans area. Right now our concern and prayers are with the folks still in Grand Isle. No stranger to hurricanes. Its been flooded many times and always rebuilds. Is this one different for some reason, the Rapid Intensification overnight or some other reason . The people of Grand Isle are strong people, a lot of them are fishermen, and they like to ride out the storms in their homes. These are people who get right out there and start repairing their property. They dont wait for the government to come in, they do it themselves. Usually they dont like to leave, but this storm the mayor told me he thought perhaps 95 of the island left yesterday. They understand weather, they understand the threats, they understand what it looks like. Like youi said, they usually ri it out. I issued a mandatory evacuation for them, but there are still 40 people, we imagine, that are still on the island. All right. Viewers on the screen on the left, youll see the closeup radar. That Northern Eyewall, the most ferocious catastrophic winds just offshore, the Greater Eyewall to the north, and then there is Port Pashon appears to be directly in the eyewall. Youll see to the left, cocodrie, and people are left in that area. But you can see the eyewall is about to sweep the louisiana coastline. Well go back and forth between the hurricane and the media headlines of the week. The first of these headlines is Bad News at Abc News. The boss of good Morning America is accused of sexual assault. He denies the allegations. They also implicate abc saying executives knew these complaints about corwin and they want answers. With me now is the reporter who broke the story, joe flint, and claire atkinson. Is this true . I was working on this story before it was published, and there were interactions with corwin and his legal team, yes. And now a lawsuit is filed and abc has a mess on its hands. What do you see happening next . Because the head of Abc News who just came in this year promising culture change, she says she wants an independent investigation into these allegations. Do wye know if disney, the paret company, is going to do that . Disney has not said if Theyll Launch any investigation. Well see how that plays out. I think disney, given there is a lawsuit right now in play, it might be hard for disney to do anything right now except focus on the suit and the allegations in it. Right, good point. And News Nation, claire, is this upstart newschannel. Corwin came in to try to help it out a few months ago. News nation has basically ignored this. Ive heard complaints from News Nation saying, whats going on . Were In The Dark here. In this Day And Age where corporate responsibility is front and center, the fact that nexstar has said were not going to comment on it, theyre battening down the hatches. Its interesting that when corwin left Abc News, there was no one saying, thank you for your service. The women i have been speaking to over the course of months on this story also were kind of stunned when Michael Corwin got this job, and i think, you know, i think any News Organization when accusations are made, even if theyre denied, and Michael Corwin has the right to state his case and deny the accusations, but surely to take a pause and perhaps suggest some time off while News Nation and nexstar get to the bottom of what these allegations are. Turning to the headline that you broke, claire, about Rachel Maddow renewing with msnbc. She might do other work instead. She wants to have specials on msnbc, but she wants to work with podcasts and other projects. What do you think about becoming a Studio Boss rather than a reporter . This is a new deal on talent news. The bbc has reported that rachel will be paid 30 million. It kind of jibes with the neighborhood ive been hearing. I dont think its a straight salary, its perhaps a Remuneration Package which could involve how well the movie does, how many books get sold. As for replacing Rachel Maddow, she is irreplaceable. I dont know what theyre going to do at 9 00. Perhaps there is a way for rachel to tape the kind of features she does and she slot it in as a tape versus live. Her fans are absolutely rabid in the same way sean hannitys fans love him at Fox News. Rachel maddows fans are crazy for her, so its not an easy decision for msnbc. Obviously shes a hugely, highrated talent in that slot. Finding somebody else to replace her is going to be a very difficult job for the network. Yes, it is. Yes, it is. Joe, you also wrote about another Succession Story this week, jeopardy. We know Mike Richards is out as host but hes still producer for now. Who will be taking over jeopardy for now, do we know . Its still up in the air, but i wouldnt rule out ken jennings. He did some hosting. Mayim bialik is also in the running. Mike richards is there now, but it does not believe hes there. Part of the objective is to get the shows out of the way they needed to get out of the way, and now the show is going on a hiatus a little bit, and well see what happens after that, whether he returns from the hiatus or not. I think thats still up in the air. Claire and joe, thank you for breaking down these stories. When we come back, well go to the state capitol. And how california is fighting back against candidate Larry Elder. With schizophrenia, i see progress differently. Its in the small things i look forward to. With the people i want to share it with. Its doing my best to follow through. Its the little signs that make me feel like things could be better. Signs that make it feel like real progress. Caplyta effectively treats adults with schizophrenia. And its just one pill, once a day, with no titration. Caplyta can cause serious Side Effects. Yeah. Time for Grilled Cheese. Wondering what actually goes into your multivitamin . At new chapter, its innovation, organic ingredients, and fermentation. Fermentation . Yes. Formulated to help you body really truly absorb the natural goodness. New chapter. Wellness, well done. Looking live at wlx in biloxi, Storm Surge pushing at about 90 as it pushes water on the gulf coast. Wind advisories have been extended in Grand Isle and in the south. Inland in houma has been extended until 1 00 central time. When the eyewall comes to shore, its going to feel like a tornado, meteorologists warning people this will feel like a long duration tornado. When you have winds from 100 to 150 miles an hour coming in at the same time, its like a Tornado Bearing down on the Gulf Shore there. Thankfully mostly unpopulated areas of louisiana, but as we heard earlier, there are some folks in Grand Isle and many Folks Inland in towns like houma. Well go to Baton Rouge in just a few moments. Here on reliable sources, Governor Gavin Newsom fighting to hold onto his job as the state hurls toward that vote. 50 , newsom is out, and the candidate who gets the most votes on the second question gets the spot. One contentious leader taking the lead, it seems, and thats far right host Larry Elder. Hes been a fixture on Fox News for years, and now hes bashing the media. At the same time hes denying multiple allegations, multiple scandals swarming around him about his finances, his relationships with women, but elder has been refusing to answer reporters questions, and hes been positioning the media as the enemy, even going so far as to revoke press access. That happened after a dispute over a voter guide. He has a real shot at the local governors seat. What could it mean for press in the state . With me is colleen nelson. Why is he shutting out The Press, colleen . Well, theres been an evolution here. At the start of his campaign, Larry Elder gave some limited access to the Sacramento V and other outlets, he did an sbrir with a Sacramento V reporter. But as the questions have gotten tougher, he has pulled back and really reverted to mostly speaking with conservative Media Outlets, Media Outlets who he thinks are more closely aligned with his viewpoints, and has made the calculation that he doesnt need to speak to nonpartisan Media Outlets in a lot of cases, and he has gone so far as to report that he has revoked access to Sacramento B journalists, that he wont allow us to cover his events or Press Conferences and we are not invited. So hes a member of the Media Shutting out the media, which really shows our media parallel world. There is media thats trying to scrutinize candidates, and there is a media trying to prop elder up, and unfortunately there is not a lot of overlap. What are you doing instead . How does this ultimately hurt californians when Elder Wont Answer questions . Well, it hurts voters. And so this isnt about the Sacramento Bee, its about voters. When candidates dont answer our journalists questions, theyre inclined to answer the questions of our readers. Those are the people that Larry Elder and others perform the campaign fairly and Kp Compreh comprehensively. Whether were invited to Larry Elders Press Conferences or not, were covering Larry Weather were invite as were covering the other recall candidates. Were continuing to report on Larry Elders view on key issues, because he is a Radio Show Host and author, were reporting extensively on his public statements, both past and present and doing everything we can to make sure our readers are informed and have the information they need when they go to the polls. That includes about the current governor. How has newsom been with regards to The Press . Ive heard local reporters say he prefers to talk to national outlets and not the locals. Sure, reporters want more access. Hes done some national interviews certainly, gave a national interview in the last couple days so he can make that decision. Hes providing some access to california reporters as well. Colleen, thank you very much. Hope to speak with you again. After the break, were going back to Hurricane Ida, the latest in New Orleans, Baton Rouge and the coast. Well check with one of the editors of a local paper there in a moment. get outta here. Im leaving with my gold. Its not crazy. Help me, mother. Its an omelet. Just crack an egg. Growing up in a little red house, on the edge of a forest in norway, there were three things my family encouraged kindness, honesty and hard work. Over time, ive come to add a fourth be curious. Be curious about the world around us, and then go. Go with an open heart, and you will find inspiration anew. Viking. Exploring the world in comfort. Orleans wetlands into a giant washing machine. A category 4 super Storm Ransacking parts of the gulf coast. Specifically, Grand Isle, louisiana. Here is something shared by charlotte landry. She watched her Security Camera feeds to monitor her home. Shes been seeing the water quickly rising. That was before the home lost power. She then lost her cameras. Were also watching some of the storm gauges on the island, showing the Storm Surge quickly rising. The Northern Eyewall is very close to the louisiana coastline. This hurricane rapidly intensified overnight. Its going to be in the history books because of the way it was able to grow into a monster overnight. These are some of the local headlines from this mornings papers that are still able to be printed and delivered in louisiana. I want to bring in a couple of guests in newsrooms, peter covax, the editor of the times picayune, and Dan Cohen is the News Director for Wwl Radio in New Orleans. Peter, first to you, what is your current plan for your newspapers there . Well, we printed a newspaper this morning and we delivered it successfully, and were printing one tomorrow. Most of our plan is to cover the storm online. Its going to get to where you Cant Drive around and deliver a newspaper. We have the largest News Staff and the largest online audience in louisiana. Even in the runup to the storm this week, weve had about 20 Million page views, which is probably three times whats usual. Today we probably have four or five times whats usual. Thats our plan. Does anything feel different about this hurricane to you . We have, i would say including myself, probably A Thousand years of Staff Experience covering hurricanes. Theyre all different and in some ways theyre all the same. Thats right. Let me bring in dave cohen, News Director for Wwl Radio. Are you with me . I am. Let me tell you one of the main things i remember about katrina 16 years ago today, it seemed at first New Orleans was spared. Late at neat Gene Meserve called in to cnn trying to hold back tears, describing people on rooftops. We didnt know the full story. In a hurricane, its like a fog of war situation. We may not know exactly what happens in realtime. You, of course, were On The Air during katrina and for the hurricanes since. Do you feel New Orleans is better prepared than it ever has been for this size of a hurricane . From an infrastructure standpoint, theres No Doubt about that, that the levees are taller and more Sturdy And Theyve been armored and built now to be resilient and with withstand over toppling, like they did in katrina, 80 of the city being flooded and the worst disaster in u. S. History at the time. The billions spent in Flood Walls and gates and pumps and armoring the levees, clearly the city is better prepared. Also technologically, all the Cell Phone towers have Natural Gas generators so they wont run out of fuel and go dead like they did in carina. We have a far better smart Phone Net Wrork where we have so many ways to communicate and see whats going on. Yeah. I think were better off in terms of preparation and in terms of being able to cover this and to know, at least as best as we can in realtime, whats happening. One bit of good news. 911 service had been interrupted in New Orleans parish. Were now told service has been restored in orleans parish. Lets show the Northern Eyewall. As we approach 11 00 a. M. Central, noon eastern, you can see Grand Isle is getting smacked by the worst of it. Let me show you a tweet from a Jefferson Parish Official a few minutes ago. Grand isle lost connection of our Weather Station from the outer eyewall. The last measurement of the winds was 136 miles per hour. That is a unsurvivable sustained wind speed. If youre in a home built out of wood, other materials not built for this kind of hurricane, thats unsurvivable. Well see what pictures come out of Grand Isle in the hours and days to come. Peter, youre in Baton Rouge. How close to you let your reporters get to where this hurricane is coming onshore . Weve had reporters out we have reporters in their homes right now. We have reporters at the emergency operation center. We do not have someone in Grand Isle right now. Good. Which i think makes sense. But weve had reporters out in boats in hurricanes in the past. Peter, thank you very much for being here. Dave, thank you as well. Cnns coverage is going to keep going all day and all night. Were live for the foreseeable future n. A few Minutes Wolf Blitzer will take over for a Special Edition of the situation room. Where exactly Hurricane Ida will make landfall is unclear. You can see where its coming ashore. One of the strongest hurricanes in louisiana history, one of the strongest anywhere in the united states coming ashore between Grand Isle and coke degree. Mostly marshland.
