Right now. Welcome to our viewers in the United States and all around the world, it is thursday, august 26th, im John Berman with Brianna Keilar. 36 hours left. That is the breaking news. Sources tell cnn the Evacuation Effort in afghanistan will end in the next 36 hours. Remember, the deadline for u. S. Withdrawal is actually August 31st. This news means The End of direct efforts to get people out days before that deadline. We know there are american citizens still trying to Get Out. For thousands of Green Card holders, legal permanent residents, that hope is faint or all but gone. U. S. Efforts are under way to help 2,000 local Embassy Staff Get Out. We did just learn that 13,000 people were evacuated from afghanistan in the last 24 hours. That is still a very large number but you can see that number getting smaller and smaller less than the 20,000 we had seen the previous two days. Huge Security Risks complicating this evacuation over the next 36 hours. Overnight, the u. S. Embassy In Kabul warned all americans do not travel to the airport. And for people already gathered at certain airport gates, the message was even more urgent, it was leave immediately. One Defense Official told cnn theres a very specific Threat Stream from isisk, about planned attacks against crowds there. And this warning specifically names three airport gates. Nick Paton Walsh beginning our coverage for us in qatar with the breaking news on the new timeline for evacuating afghanistan. You know, nick, you had been reporting in the last few days that you couldnt really take August 31st to the bank. You have to factor in u. S. Troops leaving and this would mean a much accelerated evacuation. Youre very correct in that assessment which is very sad for many people trying to Get Out. Reporter yeah, look. From those numbers youre reporting 13,000 in the last 24hour Period thats sort of the evidence you need of the difficulties that are now building. It is quite clear that they cannot go back to where they were before which is the gating being open, people being picked out of the crowd or essentially through their own ingenuity getting on to the airport. That caused a loss of life and seems now with the concerns about isisk or possibly bombs in those crowds that is simply not going to happen. In fact, i understand from a source familiar with the situation the gates are now fully closed. In fact, abby gate, one of the key gates people tried to get in, thats been cleared around it. So, that situation shut down because i understand one of a number of issues, of course, the volume of people being one but a Bomb Threat persistently was one of them as well. Where are we now in terms of the departure of u. S. Citizens . Well, you heard Antony Blinken Yesterday Afternoon D. C. Time talk about 500 americans that they were aware needed to be evacuated to the airport. 1,000 about whose status they were not 100 clear but theyve been trying to reach. The figures were hearing today 150 americans needing evacuation to the airport as of 8 00 a. M. This Morning Kabul local time, those numbers are essentially suggesting that 500 may have dwindled. I know also between midnight and 8 00 a. M. 200 were flown out of the airport. So its possible that at the very fast rate this job of Evacuating Americans is going that diminishing that 500 fast and may even be getting into some of those thousands if theyre more certain about whether they are american citizens and whether they want to leave. The other issue you mentioned, too, local afghan Embassy Staff, very much in the mind of u. S. Diplomats, of course. People they sat opposite 1,300 are out, 1,800 need to be brought to the airport. This is happened through the alternative routes through, i understand, Convoys Prearrangement with the taliban and u. S. Military can enter through the Southern Gate of the airport but also, too, there are many who are trying to get in buss who are stuck on the perimeter because they simply cannot help all the people they want to. It does seem if were seeing now the number theyre flying out diminishing its clearly not because the u. S. With extraordinary Air Lift the past few days lacks the air power. They can bring in c17s every 39 minutes they say. Its probably because the people they need to get are actually harder to find. And it seem thats things are ramping down now. Im hearing the turkish, italians, the brits may leave tonight. Its fast developing and turning into a Military Withdrawal sadly rather than evacuation operation, brianna. Yeah. This is The End. This is the beginning of The End that were witnessing here. Nick Paton Walsh, thank you so much. The next 36 hours in and around the Kabul Airport will be complicated. They will be dangerous. Cnns Sam Kylie was just evacuated from the Kabul Airport yesterday. He is joining us now from doha as well. Sam, there are a lot of risks here. Reporter there are a great deal of risks writ large in the form of briefings coming out from the british, americans, dutch, belgians all saying to their citizens, stay away from the airport. If youre close to the airport, get away from the airport because of this isisk threat. And that has meant that the acceleration of these evacuations just has to happen in the face of this potentially catastrophic attack, which intelligence officials really think is potentially imminent. But this is what it looked like as we were leaving. Reporter the Freedom Clock for evacuees from kabul is ticking ever faster. The u. S. And its Allies Loading planes with evacuees from kabul at a frantic pace. One taking off every 39 minutes as of tuesday. We know there are a lot of desperate people who want to leave and thats why we are working as fast as we can. Reporter still the State Department says as many as 1,500 americans may still remain in afghanistan. The biden administration pledging to make sure u. S. Citizens who want to leave arent Left Behind. Let me be crystal clear about this, there is no deadline on our work to help any remaining american citizens who decide they want to leave to do so along with the the many afghans who have stood by us over these many years. Reporter but getting to the airport is an increasingly dangerous feat. The taliban Blocking Access for afghans hoping to board a plane to escape. Weve also had a number of reports of afghans stuck in pockets around the town desperately sending out signals to americans to try to get them out, particularly people working with the United States. Weve heard from one group its identity were keeping secret that really fear they will not survive the coming days if they cant get to this airport. Crowds still packing outside the facilitys walls waiting and wading in sewage, some people showing documents trying to get inside. Active plots from isisk to attack crowds at the airport has caused the Coalition Government to tell their citizens to stay away. Do not travel to Hamid Karzai international airport. And if youre in the area of the airport, move to a safe location and await further advice. Reporter this Isis Threat is making evacuation even harder. Were taking every precaution, but this is very high risk. Reporter but some are making it through and making it out. Like mohammed a u. S. Citizen leaving with his family of six. Nobody want to leave their home easily. But there are a lot of challenging around. Reporter hours later, landing in doha, the first step to safety on a long and hard journey as refugees from terror. Now the u. S. Has said that both of americans who may get Left Behind although theyre committed to getting them all out but very importantly also people with visas for the United States who worked alongside The Americans Who Saimply will not e able to Get Out come what may their chances of getting to the airport are really very slim there will be alternative method dolls and points of Leverage And Pressure they can put on a taliban dominated In Kabul, people want to leave Afghanistan V the visas to leave afghanistan particularly to go to the United States to allow them to do that. How that will happen will be keenly watched In Kabul. Brianna, john . Sam kylie live for us in doha. Thank you. Joining me now from kabul on the phone is the middle East Bureau Chief for the Los Angeles times. Nabi, i know youre out on the streets reporting so i appreciate the time youre taking to speak with us. This news that cnn is reporting now, 36 hours left until the Evacuation Efforts end. How do you think that that news will be received where you are In Kabul . Well, almost certainly create a more chaos at the airports. To be clear, even today, even though theres been word about this Bomb Threat from isisk, thousands still streamed to the Airport Area to try to get in. Its worth noting a lot of these people dont have the documents to get in but theyre still trying. Thats still happening even today. So describe the process for someone trying to get into the airport on this final 36 Hour Stretch . What is it like for them . Well, a lot of people realize those who have permissions are in touch with various groups to organize a Meeting Point outside of the airport so either in a Hotel Or Compound and then they are bussed in. Other tricks theyre using for example is to pick up a special kind of clothing or hold a balloon or some kind of special outing to show them out in the crowd and brought in by The Marines. Lets say youre trying to get into the airport and start walking up to the gates. Youre facing taliban who are likely to shoot first and ask questions later or really just beat you with a rubber hose, Et Cetera. It depends on the whims of who is there. So really its quite difficult in this regard. Now, again, the key point is that were seeing all these emails, calls, organizations to figure out ways and alternative Meeting Points to go there and go by bus to the airport. And of course extreme cases by helicopter. Do people know what to do . We keep seeing these State Department alerts. Leave the airport if youre not there. Dont go until youre told. Seems like it must be whiplash for people . Its crazy. Of course. Its absolutely crazy. Its nuts. The fact of the matter is yesterday i spoke to someone who has a visa. He has tickets and he was told to go to the gate and then he assumed there would be a chance for him to be allowed in at some point. He gave up hours later. After to brave sewage water, after having to deal with Taliban Guards Shooting in the air, its all very confusing and worth noting there are armies in place here. Youre dealing with various groups and trying to figure out who can reach reach The Marine who will let you in or reach a soldier in this army to let you in. So really its very, very cha chaotic. People need to understand the fact of the matter is that people will be Left Behind. There will be u. S. Allies, u. S. Afghan allies Left Behind. There will be legal permanent residents Left Behind, maybe even american citizens another this point Left Behind. So what extent are people now planning now that they know theres really only 36 hours left, what contingencies are people making for this postAugust 31st period, either to try to live their safely or try to Get Out even after that time. Well, of course, a lot of people have now visas to pakistan or to pakistan or to turkey Et Cetera and try to use those to Get Out. In case they cant leave, try to go via land, Talk Crossing in pakistan, for example. But at the same time, this is quite difficult. And still unclear. This is the real point is that we dont know whats going to happen at the airport. Will commercial Flights Resume . Its unclear if the taliban have aircraft to control. The fact is that its key. Right . Without this kind of expertise they cant operate commercial flights even if they wanted to. This is a key point. People who stayed behind or Left Behind, Et Cetera, theyre trying to find ways to go over land which might work better now. The airports are a complete mess. Its also worth noting that with kabul outside of the airport is functional to an extent. You have the taliban security. The presence at the ministries. For women its a different situation, clearly. Right . With all that being said, right now kabul outside the airport is safer than kabul near the airport. Nabih, In Kabul, we appreciate the time youve taken to speak with us. Please stay safe. Thank you so much. Lets talk about this worsening Security Situation in and around the Airport At Kabul with jim sciutto. Talk to us a little bit about this. We heard from Sam Kylie. Intel officials are worried about a catastrophic attack. The risk appears to be real. I reported yesterday that the u. S. Is a very specific intelligence streams that the intelligence about this potential attack at the airport is specific and credible. They believe isisk has the capability and the planning to do so and the target would be those crowds around the airport with the intention of striking fear and creating mayhem around the airport. That that seems to have contributed to what weve seen there which is lack of Ak Setsz to the airport. But lets be frank, its not just that because the taliban ive been speaking to groups trying to get people out of the country and afghans trying themselves to Get Out of the country and the taliban is not allowing access to the airport. Theyve been turning many or most people away. Beating them away. Telling them for various reason that is a cant come in anymore. So when you hear heard from the Podium Yesterday the taliban is allowing access to the airport frankly practically on the ground not true. Ive been in touch with a family here in the u. S. , is trying to get their family, Green Card holders out of kabul. Legal, permanent residents who live here in the United States, have for years they were home visiting family. Trying to get back now. They got stuck. They were supposed to be out on a commercial flight in september. Thats not going to happen. They cannot get through a taliban check point. They control the country, they control access to the airport. Those people and our Evacuation Plan with some exceptions because we know the military has been doing extractions particularly of american citizens at great risk with some exceptions but in general that golden ticket is dependent on taliban cooperation. And in recent days they just have not been cooperating and its a fundamental weakness in this plan, right . You have one Exit Point from one airport in the entire country and you dont have control of the space around it. Thats your only emergency exit. So were looking at these numbers now. We know that on the military side of things its been a little over 5,000 people they have gotten out in the last 24 hours. Thats a dip from the last couple of days. Because People Cant get to the airport. They cant get to the airport. How are you thinking about this . This is a staggering Air Lift but at the same time, the way im thinking about it is, look, if you, if your family was in peril, anyones family was in peril, and you survive but your Brother Or Mother dont or your kids, youre not celebrating. No. This isnt a moment to celebrate. Its great you got out. It is a tragedy nonetheless. You can separate the mission from the policy. The mission has been performed pretty remarkably well in a finite number of days many tens of thousands of people carried out. You know you covered the military for years. You have family in the military. I have. Thats an enormous operation. Dozens of c17s, all the coordination, the protection necessary to do that and the respect you saw those soldiers showing those refugees as they come in. That should be lauded. But that mission was bookended by policy that basically gave this country days to evacuate many tens of thousands of people. And the August 31st deadline has always been misleading, right . Thats turning the lights off. And already has nick has been reporting and ive been discussing the last couple days the actual deadline is much sooner for that. For most afghans its already passed. I remember you guys talking about it. Actually the deadline is more like friday. Thats what were seeing as you said August 31st. And for many of them, its passed already because they cant get to the airport so they cant Get Out. Jim sciutto, thank you so much. Coronavirus hospitalizations in the United States are now topping 100,000, the first time since january in the early weeks of Vaccine Rollout that the u. S. Has seen these kinds of numbers. Florida and texas accounting for nearly one third of all hospitalizations as the Delta Variant is just tearing through the unvaccinated population. We do want to get to some viewer questions. You have a lot of good ones out there on these vaccines and the booster shots. So to answer those, lets bring in cnn chief medical Correspondent Dr. Sanjay gupta. I love doing this with you, sanjay, because these are the real questions. Good morning. That people have. And first, gary from virginia says this, he says i am fully vaccinated as of may 2021. I dont feel protected anymore. Maybe you can address that. And want the booster sooner than later. Are the original vaccinations effective eight plus months. Why do we have to wait . Well, thats a great question. And what the covid Task Force is basically said is they signaled, hey, look, were seeing some Safety Signals in terms of waning antibodies. So, theyre trying to be proactive. So maybe not waiting until they see numbers of hospitalizations and things like that go up. Well see how the cdc and the fda treat this because this still has to go through the official processes and then be formally recommended by the cdc. Right now i got to say the vaccine still work really well. We talked a lot about antibodies waning. People care more about the patients than their blood. Let me show you something out of l. A. I love showing graphics like this because i think they tell a story of what has happened with the vaccines overall. The Dash Line you see going up in the upper right corner there, that is the unvaccinated people in the hospital. This is going through The End of last month and you can see the bottom lines are flat, almost against the bottom there are the vaccinated. And partially vaccinated even slightly above that. I want to just keep showing these graphics because as we talked about boosters and everything and people say well, my vaccines are wearing off. In terms of the things that matter most, theyre really not. Theyre staying pretty effective for some time. How long will they last . I dont think we can say for sure. But in the past, you know, theres vaccines that can last years and you get boosters every now and then. So well see if this is more like flu or more like that. That was incredible to see that. You still see the difference between the unvaccinated and the vaccinated the relative risk level. I want to go to Question Number three because i want to make sure we have time for it. This is the Big Question that so many people are asking right now and stephanie from New York who writes how do we move forward knowing that many americans will never be vaccinated even with pfizer receiving full Fda Approval at what point does covid become an endemic virus that we must learn to live with without major restrictions in our schools and normal lives . Well, i think in terms of endemic, meaning the virus is here to stay, i think we can probably say that now. This is a really contagious virus. Look, theres the descendants of the 1918 flu or things that we still live with more than 100 years later. Thats quite possible. But it could be a rather inconsequential house mate, if you will. A very tolerable one. Here is what dr. Fauci said just a couple days ago. If we can do that with the people who have been infected, get them revaccinated, the people who are unvaccinated now, that 90 Million people get them vaccinated, i think we can get a degree of overall Blanket Protection of the community that as we get into the early part of 2022, getting through the winter, which could be complicated by influenza, by Respiratory Virus that as we get into the spring we could get back to a degree of normality. What is likely to happen is that on top of vaccinations as we know because this is such a contagious virus people are increasingly becoming infected. Its a much more difficult way to achieve immunity but there is something to be said for natural immunity. You dont want to do this. Im not encouraging it because people get sick and they can die. But in combination the vaccine immunity, natural immunity thats what dr. Fauci is referring to the virus will run out of places to go because theres enough immunity out there. How do you define control . Thats going to be the Big Question. Really have to answer this question. A lot will be at the point where its no longer sort of affecting hospitalizations and were taking care of patients the way we used to and not thinking about covid in terms of what it can do to a society. There will still be illnesses from time to time, but not the impact that weve seen right now. Look, immunity is key, as you said. But no need to do it the hard way, right . We dont need to lose people to get there. Its insane. Its a sacrifice that we dont have to make. We have these vaccines. Sanjay, thank you so much for being with us this morning. Bring out the bold™ cnn reporting this morning that the Evacuation Efforts from afghanistan are winding down in the next 36 hours. U. S. Officials now trying to clarify telling us that while the efforts are slowing they will try to put people on flights until the last flights out if they can. Look, this may be a largely moot point if People Cant get into the airport they cant get on to a plane but were following this. The important thing is that the efforts winding down very rapidly, certainly within the next 36 hours. Now, while this is going on, Covid Hospitalizations now top 100,000 in the United States for the first time in months. Afghanistan, covid huge challenges for the Biden Presidency. On top of that hes trying to pass his economic agenda which he wants to define the entire presidency. Joining us now cnn political analyst david gregory. So not much going on for the White House this morning, david. No, look, its a serious issue. Hes dealing with a genuine fullon foreign Policy Crisis, hes dealing with covid, which the numbers are just frankly heading in the wrong direction and hes heading into the fall of the first year of his presidency. Right. And were in a political cycle that never ends, so the midterms really began when President Bidens presidency began. And he knows that. The party knows that. The public positions have been since trump left office for the mid term so all of that what compounds. When i look at afghanistan, i look at the covid crisis, any big crisis an administration faces a question of good government and how competent the administration is. I dont think anybody really disagrees with his position on afghanistan which is that troops needed to come out but it was how it was done. Were the american people prepared for the kind of chaos that weve seen. It just doesnt look good. It doesnt look like the administration knew how to handle what was going to be a very difficult situation. Hes gotten so many good marks on covid, but hes dealing with something that actually predates him, right . Imagine if President Trump had said, hey, lets call it the trump vaccine. Everybody take it. Lets make this a bipartisan effort and away with ego. It would have been a lot easier. Nevertheless, it becomes a Management Issue for this administration which accelerated getting the vaccine out to people and now hit the ceiling. And are now trying to manage expectations when lets face it a lot of people are ready to just simply move on. Its done. Were back to normal, going back gets really hard. Hes sort of suffered when it comes to poll numbers from what weve seen here lately here in the last month his Approval Rating has dropped eight points, according to a Cbs News Ugov survey. What do you make of what youre seeing with these numbers . I think any president gets nicked up as they get further into office and more things Get Out of their control. What i have been struck by and the Biden Presidency is how tightly choreographed events have been. Even when dealing with a crisis like covid. As a politician, hes much more unwieldy than he has been in his first year. Hes been much more disciplined and thats his staff around him. Now hes starting to deal with things that are less predictable and in the case of afghanistan i think could have been handled better but hes still dealing with a foreign Policy Crisis and people are starting to live with the presidency a little bit more and form some different opinions. The more hes in office, the more things are spiraling a little bit. He still benefits from the fact that were the middle of a very strong economy. I think that is probably his strongest card right now. Look, as you say, david, if your Calling Card is competency and the afghanistan thing starts to question that on this front, then it becomes an issue on other things as well and thats where et seeps in. I do want to ask you about some news we got overnight having to do with the former president , former President Trump theres obviously this congressional probe into the events around January 6th and overnight President Trump says that he is going to defend what he calls his Executive Privilege. Whatever documents and whatever witnesses that this January 6th committee goes after. What do you make of that . Well, it shouldnt be surprising that President Trump, who wants T Ss to defend any liability for history wants to shield as much as he did or did not do around January 6th as possible. But i think theres bipartisan agreement that we have to understand what led up to January 6th. It was a really dark day for this country. It was an attempt to thwart our democratic Process And Transition of power. It cannot be left to stand, period. I dont care what you believe about politics or who you support, it cannot happen. And so, as much as were royaled by politics on capitol hill, we have to have this work go forward so we have some clarity about it. I think the question now is whether the biden administration will protect or support any of those assertions of Executive Privilege. Its their privilege to defend at this point. But i think the instinct, of course, by President Trump shouldnt be surprising. He hasnts to hide what he did and didnt do and i dont think thats going to stand. What about on covid in were seeing cases rise. The president obviously on the right side of science here. And yet theres some things he cannot stop and that are going to affect his agenda. Well, thats right. And when we were talking before, the big bets hes making on the economy, right, are the fact that the Biden Presidency is the middle of a Boom Economy and theres a bet that hes making which is that americans will support a big intervention by the government in the economy to make bigtime societal change where its necessary. Thats a bet hes making. Theres not bipartisan agreement about that but he thinks he has the ability to do that. Covid undermines that, of course, because it just tends to royal the waters politically. The channel that President Biden has is how to keep persuading people to get vaccinated, to be vigilant when theres a political atmosphere surrounding all of this. And it cant be that you have a president and his team looking down at people saying, you dont get it. Youre ignorant and youre hurting everybody else. Its simply not going to be a way to persuade people. It has to be a bottom up situation. He has to rely on the private sector. He has to push on schools so that theres enough people who are saying, you know, the policy is you got to be vaccinated and you got to be indivigilant. Well see. David gregory, so nice to see you this morning. Thank you for being with us. Just ahead, how back to School Shopping has suddenly turned political. Is nothing sacred . And Front Line nurses speaking out on Staffing Shortages as covid cases surge. Two people start to go bad at once and you have to decide, which room you run to. Thats a hard decision to make. S. , the skills and stamina of the nations nurses are being tested like never before. In mississippi, hospitals are facing some of their darkest days yet. And some stress and exhausted nurses are deciding to resign. Cnns Erica Hill has the story. Reporter in ocean springs, mississippi, the icu is full. Theres a nursing shortage. We have had situations in here with covid, with people this critical, where two people start to go bad at once. And you have to decide which room you run to. Thats a hard decision to make. Reporter the stress of those decisions of the growing number of young covid patients and preventable death brought nicole to a Breaking Point earlier this month. You made the decision to resign. Why . Sometimes it feels like were fighting a losing battle. Reporter yet a week after that conversation, nicole was still in the icu. Thats where a Nurses Heart comes in, you know. You dont want to see your coworkers suffer as much as you dont want to see a patient suffer. Reporter while it helps, one Nurse Choosing to stay isnt enough. Got everything you need . Reporter mississippi has at least 2,000 fewer nurses than it did at the beginning of the year. It looks heroic and it looks but thats not what it is. Its sweaty and hard and chaotic and bloody. I didnt even know what burnout meant as a nurse until i hit covid. Mike He Lyssa Davis has worked in the icu for 17 years. Its never been this bad. I have seen a turnover in nurses i never would have thought would turn over because i cant take it no more. Reporter do you feel youre close to a Breaking Point . I think we already broke. Reporter burn out, stress, grueling hours. There are multiple Reasons Career nurses are choosing to leave. Weve been seeing it hit a peak recently. 120 nursing vacancies open now. When they do, that experience is also lost. It takes years of training to get to the point where you can actually take care of a covid patient. This is nothing like weve seen before. Reporter the head of Singing River Hospital system is now urging the state to use some of its 1. 8 billion in covid Relief Funding for retention bonuses. The evacuation in afghanistan slowing down with the August 31st Troop Withdrawal Deadline fast approaching. And u. S. War veterans have been working behind the scenes trying to help their afghan comrades and really anyone that they can help. Theyve been leaning on Each Other for support since the taliban took over, even since april when this announcement of a withdraw was made. I want to talk with retired lieutenant, he is a chief strategic officer at the travis manion foundation. Colonel, thank you for being with us. Im seeing this in the veterans community. Im worried about our veterans and what were seeing. Tell us what youre seeing. Yeah, the emotions that are going through veterans minds right now is kind of crazy. I think theres kind of two categories. One is was my service worth it . Thats kind of the first train of thought. Then the other, whats my whats happening with our Afghan Allies . And so having this dialogue is extremely important. Organizations like the Travis Mannion Foundation was created to have that sense. They serve Gold Star families. Emotions are running wild. I come from a military family. Ive been trying to explain to people who dont what its like and for people who wonder. What its for, they feel like they served honorably and they took care of the Guy Or Gal next to them. They do wonder what was it for. But looking at now, these Afghan Allies that theyre trying to help, this goes to, look, even if, even if the War Isnt won, they can still leave with their word, right . They can still leave hopefully with not leaving someone behind, and thats why this is such a difficult time. Thats true. And actually i just had a conversation last night with a couple buddies, guys that i served with in afghanistan and were working actively right now to get somebody out of northern afghanistan. But i will tell you, it doesnt look good with the Gates Closed Around Kabul and were having trouble reaching this particular interpreter that we worked with. So i would say our time was worth it. We went 20 years without a foreign Terrorist Attack on u. S. Soil. I think thats significant. And we also had personal impacts on afghans and communities that we worked with in afghanistan. So i do think our time was worth it, although i completely understand why veterans are asking themselves those questions. What do you want veterans to know about the help thats available to them . So, i think the key thing is for veterans to talk to Each Other. Again, organizations like the Travis Mannion Foundation kpifrts to create a community of veterans, of Gold Star Family Members, and of civilians who are interested in the military community. And we create opportunities for veterans and Gold Star Family Members to serve their communities and so looking back on their service in afghanistan, there may be some questions, but they certainly can serve their communities here in the United States, and actually weve had some veterans talk to the children of Afghan Refugees about character, and so that service is happening right now in the United States. Its beautiful. Hugo, thank you so much. We really appreciate you coming on and spreading the word about this. Hugo lentz. Thank you very much. Have a good day. And new day continues right now. Good morning to our viewers here in the United States and around the world. I am Brianna Keilar with John Berman. It is thursday, august 26, and time is running out for american citizens and for Afghan Allies who are desperate to leave afghanistan. The deadline to complete the withdrawal is August 31st. Right now, though, the airlift is slowing down, effectively meaning that for many people that deadline has already come and gone, or the window is closing here. 13,000 people were taken out of afghanistan in the last 24 hours. That is far less than the nearly 20,000 we had seen during each of the two previous days. About 5,000 coming out with the u. S. Military, also a dip from previous days here. U. S. Efforts underway right now to help nearly 2,000 local Embassy Staff evacuate. And this morning there are american citizens trying to leave afghanistan, the thousands of Green Card holders, legal residents and allies. Hope is really fading here. If hope is left for any of them. The embassy in afghanistan warned americans not to travel to the airport and for people alread
