The world, it is thursday, august 26th. Im Brianna Keilar alongside john berman. Were beginning with significant Breaking News. Sources telling cnn that the frantic Evacuation Effort in afghanistan is in its final 36 hours. There are still u. S. Citizens trying to get out of kabul. Others possibly stuck outside the city. And the fate of thousands of Green Card holders and their families growing dim. These are legal, permanent residents of the u. S. , like a Philadelphia Family with small children who we featured on our show yesterday. For many afghans who worked with u. S. Troops, their hopes to escape may now be dashed though u. S. Efforts are under way to help almost 2,000 local Embassy Staff try to get out. So 36 hours left. Which is not much. And the complications are only compounded by the huge security risks. Overnight, the u. S. Embassy blasted an urgent warning to all americans dont travel to the airport and people at certain gates they say leave immediately. One Defense Official told cnn theres a very specific Threat Stream from isisk about planned attacks against crowds. The warning specifically cites three Airport Gates. We want to begin with the urgent reporting, though, about this new timeline. Nick Paton Walsh is in qatar with the Breaking News. Nick, youre breaking this. What have you learned . Reporter yeah. 36 hours left of the Evacuation Operation, according to a source familiar with the situation. Now, that shouldnt come an enormous surprise we have known at some point they have to stop and the Military Takeover with the job of getting themselves out. But ive also learned that theres a key number involved here. The priority for this Evacuation Operation has always been american citizen. As of 8 00 a. M. This morning, there were still kabul time there were still 150 americans still they needed to get on to the airport. The evacuation of them is moving at a clip. I understand aftered my night and 8 00 a. M. , 200 americans actually left the base. So it is possible. Now were looking at late afternoon in kabul, but if that pace was kept up e most of the americans which the United States is aware Need Assistance to get to the airport have got there and have perhaps left. Im speculating, though. You may say, john, hang on, didnt Secretary Of State Antony Blinken talk about 1,500 americans yesterday who needed to be taken out . Well, yes, he did. He said 500 they knew for sure of and about 1,000 were people they tried repeatedly to reach who may not have been u. S. Citizens or not wanted to leave or indefinite category. You remember he was speaking for what would have been late evening kabul time, it is possible that, in fact, theyve taken out quite a lot of those 500 by now and they may even have gotten into that 1,000 group, too. So its important to remember that Antony Blinken could well have been representing the situation the entire veracity and now theres 150 left so that is one important element of this. A second number i should tell you is category of citizen who is deeply in the hearts i think american diplomats and thats the local staff at the afghan embassy. At this point, still thugt be 1800 that need to get to the airport and 1,300 have been flown out. But gosh The Gates are shut noun. There is an Bomb Threat outside thats caused that so getting in is either through escort or prior arrangement or through this slightly strange unofficial route that Afghan Security Forces also securing the airport have left open for those that they know. But the window so tight now, john. It is incredibly tight. So as you mentioned there are those afghans who are, as you put it, in the hearts of diplomatic folks, they want to get them out. But what about when it comes to legal permanent, residents. For instance, one of the families we talked about on our show, nick, was a family from philadelphia. They lived there now for a couple of years. Theyre Green Card holders, not american citizens, but were talking about a wife and five children some of whom are rather young. What about folks who fall into that category . Reporter i dont have the absolute Concrete Answer with you on that and im pretty sure the u. S. Team there would be theyre aware of that case doing what they could to get them on to the airport. Certainly american citizens and their immediate family appear to be the hard Core Priority here. Theres been very courageous work, much kept in secret for obvious reasons it seems by u. S. Troops done their best to get american citizens into the airport. And also, too, allied afghans and certain priority groups. Were really coming down awfully to a case of who you know to get through these various Check Points. The taliban are allowing escorted people through the southern Civilian Entrance and they get to the u. S. Side. That works if its prearranged. The problem seems to be that a lot of Interest Groups in washington, various places quite understandably have people who they want to get to safety. And that seems to be messing generally with the Priority System for confirmed Siv Applicants. A lot of conflicting interests here. I would describe the scene people working on the airport asked to go to The Gates to get people as though, quote, it was a trip to the backyard. This is a heavily fortified part of the airport, crowds there, Bomb Threat that we talked about, and so real concerns, i think, that this 36hour Window we have now and we know that military allies of the u. S. , australians, canadians, the british will leave tonight. Theres a lot happening already involving departure for military contingent, attention will soon turn to the u. S. The question they have to answer is how many more people from the Siv Applicants can they get on . I understand that lots of genuine Siv Applicants will not get on because these gates are closed because its so tough and this window is now so tight. Brianna . Nick Paton Walsh live from qatar. Thank you so much for that. Joining us now retired major general James Spider Marx he served in the army as the head of geopolitical strategy at academy security. Thank you for being with us. Thank you. 36 hours. The clock is ticking, 36 hours. What does that mean for the next day and a half for the u. S. Military there and what starts to happen after the 36 hours. To answer the first part of your question,ky not imagine that anything would look significantly different. I dont think theres going to be enhanced amount of risk taken on the airfield to try to really jam an increased number of folks on to aircraft. There are significant risks were you to do that, were you to increase the number of aircraft on the field. You have challenges associated with the coordination of the Air Space and the activity on the ground. What well see over the course of the next day and a half is what weve seen which is a rather chaotic scene but theres a throughput and theres a steady flow on to aircraft. The priority is american citizens. I got to i have to tell you, john, that we are going to find out that folks will be left behind which gets to the second part of your question. I find it unimaginable that the united States Government Isnt saying to the taliban right now and we know who those the u. S. Knows who those senior leaders are in the taliban, and that were not getting in their face saying, look, were going to stop asking permission here. We have u. S. Citizens. We have siv holders, folks that are going to be extracted. Were going to extract them. They will be evacuated. We will either do this in a quasi permissive way, in other words, youre going to cooperate like you have been to a certain degree or were going to get in your face. We are not going to stand for leaving folks behind. I find that i cant get my head around the notion that were going to leave folks behind. Look, the United States military lives with the ethos of no Man Or Woman left behind. Thats exactly what were acknowledging that folks are going to be left. Im tired of folks talking at the tangential populations the neex didnt register or didnt deregister or showed up and decided not to leave. Thats a small percentage. Whats significant are those that have raised their hand, got the paperwork in place and those that we can move along. Look yeah. I apologize a bit of my emotion but its important we acknowledge it. As things stand right now, its hard to imagine that everyone who wants to get out, americans, will get out. We expect an update on numbers shortly on that, spider. I also want to ask you about the security that came out from the embassy, security alert, with very specific language. Because of Security Threats outside The Gates were advising u. S. Citizens to avoid traveling to the airport and to avoid Airport Gates at this time unless you receive individual instructions from a u. S. Government representative to do so. U. S. Citizens should leave immediately from those three gates. Now, sources tell cnn there are very specific threats theyre concerned about from this group isisk. What do our viewers need to know about this group and what the threats might be . Well, this is an afghan version of isis. Just go back to the images of isis we remember from syria, where the United States did significant damage against isis. But this is in afghanistan. And what this tells you is that what afghanistan experienced 20 years ago which was a whole host a large geography of ungoverned space where Terrorist Organizations were available to train, to gather, to prepare and then they conducted the 9 11 attacks. Were at a position where that could be repeated unless we stayed diligent. So this is isisk. Bear in mind, Isisk And Taliban dont get along. I have to imagine our i. C. Leadership are doing that. Go to the taliban, look, we can be your buddies here in this particular instance. We can help you get after isisk, but also john, the thing that this tells me is that we assume were going to have some type of formal relationship with this taliban government going forward. If we left u. S. Citizens behind, we have to negotiate with the new government, the government in kabul and were going to have to say, look, we along with the g7 nations, the nations that want to be would like to help you advance unless you want to remain in the 13th century, you need to get on board and let us have normal relationships. The president laid that out. They want to make sure its not a location, afghanistan is not going to have Terrorist Organizations running free. There has to be free flow of refugees and evacuations and the refugees that exist in there and the fact that we want to be able to have humanitarian assistance available to the afghan people. That assumes that theres some type of normalcy in our relationships. Lets hear that from our Secretary Of State. Lets hear that from our senior leadership that well try to deal with the taliban going forward but well set the tone of that relationship right now, which means were going to get our folks out. Yeah. Look, its interesting. I have to let you go, general, but the congressman one of the congressman who took the controversial trip to afghanistan came out saying well he went in pushing for an extension of the August 31st deadline he believes an Extension Wouldnt Matter and the only way to guarantee or at least try to give assurances on the safety of the people left behind is to have that relationship for the taliban. That was a change and thats interesting. Always a pleasure to have you on. Thanks so much. Thank you, john, very much. The window to leave afghanistan is rapidly closing with hours to go before planes will no longer be available for folks who want to lee. Many afghans cannot get to the airport or theyre being denied entry by the taliban. Some of these folks are Green Card holders in the u. S. Not able to get through taliban Check Points. Joining us now is kristen rausch, a veteran of the war in afghanistan. And kristen, look, i know that you have been up for days on end trying to help people. This is your part of a vast network of veterans and former diplomatic folks and others trying to help afghans and americans get out. I know you have seen some of these reports about empty charter flights, some seats that are not filled. I wonder as youre undergoing these efforts how youre seeing that. I saw that photo of mostly empty plane and i cried. We have people just me and my team were just volunteers. Were veterans. One on my team hes a former my former interpreter who is now a u. S. Citizen desperately trying to get their family out because theyre threatened because of his service for our country. And we are working together Day And Night to connect with, we have a list of approximately 150 afghans that includes Family Members who are desperate to get out, many of them hold valid sivs, the valid special Immigrant Visas theyre valid and we promised them if you have this visa, you can go to the United States. They are unable to move. The taliban are not letting them through Check Points. Telling them that we were only required to allow u. S. Passports and Green Cards. And thats all were letting through. Even during these brief moments when we hear that the North Gate is accepting sivs right now and then two hours later, the North Gate is closed. Or the Abby Gate is open right now. But sorry theres shootings right now. Tell people to go away. And its been hourly nonstop changing. Theres been so much violence on the streets. Theres been so much just restrictiveness and and horror around these taliban Check Points. And its just been absolutely crushing to see, you know, people who werent able to get their passport in time before kabul fell. Theyve been working on their Visa Paper Work for months, if not years. And they were unable to make it through the 14step Process for their siv. They had an appointment at the embassy days after the embassy evacuated. You know, just story after story. But we have a college student. The taliban shot the security at his university and are beating up students and he believes that theyre going to be killed as soon as the media leaves. Look, we understand the students certainly of the American University and others especially female students have been burning their documentation. They dont want to be seen as students affiliated with americans or women affiliated with education at all. I was talking with a family of Green Card holders who also Green Card holders, who have not been able to get through a taliban check point. You know, do you think that american citizens and Green Card holders will be left behind . Its very clear afghans will be. Afghans who helped the u. S. Do you think americans and Green Card holders, theres any way around that considering some are outside of Kabul And Cant get through the Check Points in kabul . Traveling is so dangerous. And ive also heard of organizations where u. S. Citizens, Green Card holders are seeing their dear afghan colleagues are not permitted to leave. And theyre committing to stay and do the job. Alongside these afghan colleagues who they worked in partnership with for many for so many years. These are individual choices that people are making, but the absolute just travesty of not getting people out, just over the last 24, 48 hours with very few exceptions afghan nationals have not been able to fly on military flights. And charters have dried up. As you saw in that photo, charters are leaving empty. Seats are empty. The Air Lift is there, but people are not permitted access. These are its like a locked castle. And then theres the taliban have ak47s and our own u. S. Weapons that theyve gotten and theyre shooting into the crowds, theyre beating people down. Just the level of Violence And Fear and terror is nonstop what were hearing from people. Theyre screaming to get out. Theyre screaming to live. Theyre screaming for their children to live. And many of us veterans, afghans connected to dear family, were hearing this every day, every minute of the day. Many of us are staying up day after day after day at a time doing the best that we can. And theyre just not getting out. Kristen, look, i know you are fighting the fight. I hear how difficult this is in your voice. And i thank you so much for pulling the curtain back on what is going on behind the scenes here and the difficulties that youre having. Thanks for being with us. Thank you, brianna. Coming up a new Cnn Analysis shows which group of children are being most severely impacted by coronavirus. This morning, new information about children and covid with millions heading back to school. We know that with the Delta Variant more kids are getting infected. Now a new Cnn Analysis zeroed in on which Age Group is at the highest risk. Its older kids. Cnn Health Reporter Jacqueline Howard joins us now. What do the numbers tell you . John, when you look at the numbers its really surprising here because up until last week young adults ages 18 to 29 consistently had the highest rate of covid19 cases each week throughout the summer. But then last we checked and i looked at these numbers just ten minutes ago, john, Older Teens ages 16 and 17 have surpassed young adults with the highest rate of weekly covid19 cases. So you see the numbers here. Last we checked the rate among Older Teens ages 16 and 17 was 160 cases weekly per 100,000 people. So you see thats higher than what is seen in children and whats seen in adults. Obviously this is important as we see these numbers as kids head back to school. Pediatricians that i talked to said theyre not that surprised by this. When you look at Older Teens compared to adults Older Teens are still the least likely to be vaccinated among eligible Age Groups. Theres something there. Older teens compared with children, Older Teens can drive, they move around more and so they might be more exposed to the virus. But of course, well keep an eye on this. It will be interesting to see if these trends continue in the coming weeks as more teens get vaccinated possibly. Then of course as hr kids are heading back to school, it will be important to really watch these numbers, john. Important to remind people, 16 and 17yearolds perfectly eligible to be vaccinated. The pfizer vaccine, fully approved. I mean, this is an Age Group that should get vaccinated clearly these numbers show there is a need. Jacqueline howard, thanks so much for that reporting. Developing overnight, former President Trump threatening to invoke executive privilege to block the House Select Committee that is investigating the January 6th insurrection from obtaining a wide range of documents that its demanding from several u. S. Government agency. Cnns Whitney Wild is joining us now. This is a big request. He would have reason to be concerned. Absolutely. This request is about 40 pages long. It concerns communications, records that go all the way back to April 2020 and the committee is looking at again a wide range of decisions and actions that might have been made by the Trump Administration, people within his orb and the campaign. Here is a snapshot of people that are possibly subjects in this investigation. None of those names would be a surprise, Mark Meadows, Troump Loyalist Roger stone, members of the trump family. None of that is surprising. The breadth of the scope might be surprising and possibly was to the former president. Here is what he said. Unfortunately this partisan exercise is being performed at the expense of longstanding legal principles of privilege, executive privilege will be defended. These democrats have only one tired trick, political theater, and their latest request only reenforces that pathetic reality. Harsh words. It is ultimately now President Biden who will have the ultimate say whether these White House records are released. We have seen a few snip Pets Communication between the Trump Administration and the department of justice. This request spans a wide range of actions which could include what the president knew about the election, efforts to overturn the election, efforts the Trump Administration made to remove key players and key agencies and Insert Trump loyalists and what happened on the day of the riot, that includes possibly at least requesting we dont know if well get them outtakes from the video he posted telling the rioters to eventually go home. Meaning they want The Ones that didnt get posted. Right. They want whats on the cutting room floor. Interesting. So we have representatives on cnn last night. Here is what she had to say. We are trying to find out what happened leading up to the January 6th, the various elements, the reasoning, who instead gated it, why they insta gated it and the like. We want to find out every element of it and so weve made this request and this is, as i said, just the beginning. Well, shes right. So in those document requests they acknowledge that this is just the start of what will be a rolling request for documents. This may set up a lengthy legal battle. Trump could try to go to court. We know its President Biden has the ultimate say over the White House records and with regards to executive Privilege And Brianna all of this is supposed to be due by september 9th. So well see. No problem. Thats coming up fast. Whitney wild, thank you for that report. Joining me now elie honig, a former state and federal prosecutor. I want to talk about this in indepth. What has this committee done so far . John, theyve done a lot of work so far. The Stakes Couldnt be higher. They began when they called this hearing with d. C. And Capitol Hill Police officers. One moment thats really important is when this officer said this to the committee, you guys are the only ones weve got to deal with crimes that occur above us. I need you guys the committee to address if anyone in power had a role in this. Benny thompson, representative, who is the committee chair, said hes willing to do just that. He said anybody who had a conversation with the White House and officials in the White House, while the invasion of the capitol was going on is directly in the investigative sights of this Committee And Representative thompson said hes going to play hardball. I have no reluctance in Issuing Subpoenas for information. Whitney outlined some of the people this may include and ma types of things are we talking about . Really broad. If you want to know what happened inside the White House on January 6th the logical place to start is Donald Trump. That said, is congress going to want that circus . Im doubtful. However, Mark Meadows in touch with trump that day. Jared kushner. And this is where its going to get really interesting, two members of the house, mccarthy and Jim Jordan both admitted talked that they had conversations with Donald Trump on that day. Also, we know the committee is going to go out and get phone records, key communications and bringing me back to my prosecutor days. This is what a Sample Phone Record from verizon will look like. It will tell you what number is making The Call. What number is receiving The Call exactly what date and to the second what time that call was made and finally over here how many seconds long that call was. So this is going to tell you who was in touch with who in those key moments leading up to and during and after the attack. Finally, we know that there have been very broad requests for all these federal agencies. The one thats really interesting to me is The National Archives. You may be thinking, why The National Archives . Thats where the Parchment Copy of the Declaration Of Independence are. They have the trump White House records. So executive privilege, former President Trump last night in an angry Internet Statement says hes going to defend executive privilege. What does that mean . Who actually gets to decide here . Its such an interesting question. Conversations are privileged dont have to be turned over to congress can be held back. The Big Question is who gets to exercise it . Is it the current president . Or is it the president whose records and communications they were. Whitney alluded to this, we dont have a definitive answer but the better weight of the Law And Precedent is that its up to the current president joe bide n. If the house flips in a year and change, they could throw that back in his face. Of course, Donald Trump has said hes going to invoke executive privilege. He will lose if he tries to fight it in court. He will make it a mess and he will drag it out. Yeah. This is going to court one way or another which means it wont be decided any time soon i imagine. Exactly. Taking a stick and putting it in the spokes of the wheel. If Donald Trump can obstruct by going to court given his history i look for him to try to do that. One other thing, protectiing conversations within the executive branch, Jim Jordan not in the executive branch. That would be an unprecedented expansion of the privilege. Theyre part of the legislative branch. That should not be privilege. But we have seen the Trump Administration, the former administration in the past make ridiculous legal arguments designed just to slow things down. The goal is to delay they may be able to do that. Thank you, elie honig. Thanks, john. Were following Breaking News out of afghanistan where the Evacuation Effort has now entered its final 36 hours. Edu later this morning, President Biden will hold his first Face To Face Meeting with israels new leader, Prime Minister Naftali Bennett and cnns Hadas Gold is joining us now with a preview of what to expect. Perhaps turning over a new leaf, well see, hadas. Reporter brianna, for the first time in 12 Years Somebody who is not named Benjamin Netanyahu is visiting the White House. Naftali bennett is in line with his former boss. The approach will be much different. Already in meeting with the Secretary Of State Antony Blinken and Lloyd Austin Naftali Bennett talked about this new spirit of cooperation between the new countries, a bipartisan spirit of cooperation after four years of the political bromance between former prime Minister Netanyahu and Donald Trump. So for the israelis this visit is very much seen as a reset in the relationship, really trying to show that Naftali Bennett and Joe Biden will have a clear and solid line of communications and very solid relationship. Top of mind for the israelis during this Meeting Today will be iran. Israelis have long been opposed to the return to the 2015 iranian nuclear deal. The israelis say this will address the nuclear missions, the nuclear program but also their activities in the region. These regional aggressions the israelis say they see in Syria And Lebanon and the incidents at sea and the Cargo Ship which both the israelis and the americans attribute to the iranians. Naftali bennett essentially wants a regional Nato Coalition partners with the americans, with the israelis to work together to counter iran. How will President Biden receive these proposals and what will this relationship look like between these new leaders . Will this truly be a reset in the relationship between the israelis and the americans. But for the israelis really iran is the biggest issue because they truly feel as though time is running out on iran. Brianna . Yeah. Its so interesting obviously policy differences played a part in this group but personalities have played such a role as well. Were going to see if perhaps some of that can be alleviated. We have Breaking News we did just get new numbers from the White House on these evacuations that have been conducted in afghanistan here in the last 24 hours. More than 13,000, that is a lot, it is still far below what we saw the last two days. A sign that things are tapering off here. Jeremy diamond live for us at the White House. Jeremy, tell us about these numbers. Reporter yeah, thats right, brianna. 13,400 people were evacuated from afghanistan, 17 u. S. Military flights evacuated 5,100 people and then in addition there were Coalition Aircraft which evacuated 8,300 people. So the key number here is that 5,100 which were evacuated on u. S. Military flights. We have seen that number over the last couple of days hover around the 10 to 12,000 mark. So this is substantially lower. And whats important here is that this is happening as were learning that those evacuations are now winding down, expected to taper off in the next 36 hours, according to our colleague nick Paton Walsh. So, this is clearly beginning at least to shift to this withdrawal operation. We know that perhaps part of this is the fact that so many of these gates around the airport have been closed. And again, that is not only the motivation for closing these gates but also the motivation for winding down this Evacuation Operation is that President Biden, White House officials, are very, very worried about what they see as very credible threats, very credible Terrorist Threats at and around the airport, especially from isisk, that Isis Off Chute that exists in afghanistan. So again 13,400 people evacuated on u. S. Military flights. Sorry. Thats the total number. Then 5,100 people on those u. S. Military flights. So, those are the latest numbers, brianna.
