Good person. Im feeling kind of hopeless and sad, i get to laugh and lose myself and remember lifes not that bad. Here in the good place. The beautiful thing about the sitcom is it has provided so much joy in times of uncertainty. Theres a lot of pressure in the 1960s, this notion of new products and everything being new, this kind of brave new world. Everything is about the future and modernizing. Yes, its all bright and shiny and you get cars that look like space ships, but then its a scary thing. What does the future hold . Air force general Curtis La may suggested we bomb vietnam back into the Stone Age. I canyabadabado. Flint stones was a modern Stone Age family. It sort of celebrated the modern family in the guise of a Stone Age setting. It was like time Travel Fantasy for us watching. Almost through with the dishes . Just cant wait until they invent a faucet. With all the progress that was happening in the late 50s and 60s, the Flint Stones is an escape from the pressures of the modern family. And the question, is progress good. It was kind of a satire on this consumerism. Get the newest thing for your kitchen. Get the newest kind of car with these kind of stone wheels. They have a car with wheels but you need your legs to make it move. I bet that is how they did t. A lot of people think it was cartoon on saturdays. That was a sitcom that happened to be animated. I was 7 years old and my mom used to get just furious, shaking angry at me for watching the Flint Stones. Because its really a show for adults. I remember, i was so sad for betty and the fact that they couldnt have children. Were so anxious to have a baby. We take it out on fred and wilma. Fred and betty talk about adopting. A bay, a bay, a baby. We want to do everything according to law, maam. That hadnt been heard before. It was a smash hit. The Flint Stones was on for six years. Yahoo youre the greatest, fred. It was really on the Cutting Edge of escapism for an american audience that was hungry for it. Communist rulers of East Berlin reinforce their barricades. In the early and mid 60s there is so much turmoil in terms of the civil rights movement, in terms of vietnam. Theres a real crisis of identity. And there is a pattern in american entertainment of when things get really serious, we got to get silly. I just dont understand it. Dont try to. Its bigger than both of us. People just needed to escape and go watch a talking horse. Come on, cut it out. Not until you call the police. My mother the car, this car was haunted. Is that about a car . Its a mother . The Flying Nun was probably the silliest show ever made. I think thats true in a way. I wanted to be a nun when i grew up. Hey, i think im getting the hang of this. Well, i knew i couldnt be a Flying Nun and i knew i couldnt be a nun either. In the 1960s, most successful sitcoms were fun and over the top and silly. You laughed because someone else is falling on the banana peel, and that is the essence of escapism. Thats why Theres Something really deeply appealing in this idea of being able to just shake off the shackles of civilization and start all over again. Just sit right back and youll hear a tale, a Tale Of A Fateful Trip The tale of a fateful trip started a something rather. Do you know it . You probably know it better than i do. When i watch Gilligans Island, i put myself on the island with gilligan. A bunch of people get stranded on the island. No surprise there. I felt so bad for them. Are they going to ever get off that island . My father had this idea, how do i get seven people and put them together so they cant get away from each other, people of different types . So he went to cbs and Jim Aubrey was the president. He tried to sell them the show. Jim aubrey didnt see how viewers would understand why these people are there. So dad went home that night and he wrote the theme song. And then Gilligans Island went on the air. You know, they could make a latrine, they could make huts. They could make radio receivers. Keep pedaling. They could make a cinema complex. A raft was beyond their capability. The critics hated it. Thought it was the worst show ever. Everybody said this is the stupidest plot. It went on for 50 years. Were going to have to stay here a long, long time. I just remember laughing so hard at Gilligan And Skipper bald. Your heads look like a couple of cantaloupes. Im happy i knew what a cantaloupe was. I was too into ginger. Maryann origin gerry. I had the hots for the professor. Hes got a point there. I loved Gilligans Island to me. It was actually really smart. My dad wanted to create a microcosm of society. He wanted the skipper to be leadership. And mr. Howell to be capitalism. The professor to be intellectual. Ginger to be vanity. Dozen tell jensen keep us afloat . Does money keep us afloat . But there were no black people on Gilligans Island. Thats this fantasy of the american idea. The island is a metaphor for the earth. A lot of the contemporary events and threats, we can say, from nuclear annihilation to political conflicts, like the cuban missile crisis, somehow wind up being reflected in the adventures on the island. With all the Turmoil And Everything that was going on in The World then, it was an escape for everybody and it made you happy. I would like a world without strife, universal harmony, International Good Will where the spirit of brotherhood enriches everyone for all of mankind. Thank you. It taught a lesson. Seven completely different people. Raised differently, different values. Really trying to get along, and we did. Gilligan history of the sitcom, brought to you by xiidra. [music plays. ] ok everyone, our mission is to provide complete, balanced nutrition for strength and energy. Whoo hoo ensure, with 27 vitamins and minerals, now introducing ensure complete with 30 grams of protein. Theres something funny going on around here. With what was going on in The World in 1965 with u. S. Versus russia, Get Smart was lampooning the terror that we had from the cold war. It was a great way to escape the paranoia. Chaos has a nuclear bomb. Doesnt everybody . Loved Get Smart. I wanted to be don adams. Want to be home at 7 30, get in that phone booth. Get smart was a direct satire of James Bond which was the biggest thing in movies. Bond. James bond. And we satirized the blank out of it. Allow me, princess. Hes spiced up, hes got the phone in his shoe. I will take credit for the shoe phone. This is smart, maxwell smart. Which turned out to be the Cell Phone which i should have patented and i wouldnt even be bothered talking to you. One of the most famous gags on Get Smart was the case of Cone Of Silence. The case has to do with the gall formula. What . The Chief And Agent 86 couldnt actually hear each other. The Cone Of Silence would never work and it would never work in a different way every time. It was too fast. It wouldnt come down. It would hit the desk. A lot of the Catch Phrases are a part of our culture. I loved when max would say, sorry about that, chief. Sorry about that, chief. Missed it by that much. Missed me by that much. Thanks. Would you believe i shall be able to rip these chains from the wall in one minute. Would you believe it . One minute. I find that hard to believe. Would you believe two minutes . Every job he was given he totally failed, and agent 99 would help him out. She was sharp. Minuscule, diminutive, micro cosmic. You certainly have a way with words, 99. Teensy weensy. I loved the look on 99, the look on her face. Is that what you really think . I know the sound of a. 38 Special and i counted 36 shots. You made a terrible mistake. That Wasnt A. 38 Special, max. Barbara felldon rolling her eyes. There were never direct reference to what we should think about what was going on in the 60s. What was subversive about Get Smart in framing what was going on in The World in such broad strokes was that if you, the smart viewer wanted to attach meaning to it, you could see messages in it. Once youre laughing, you forget everything, you know. Laughter is a wonderful diversion from thinking about death. Its airing in the 60s at the pinnacle of the vietnam war. Its when the marines are being sent off to vietnam and vietnamese prison camps. And you could see like dead bodies in the news every night. And so the idea that you could then escape with a show like Gomer Pyle people didnt want to think of the military in negative terms. Thats not the history of america. It was definitely the feeling, lets have a guy who is a throwback like the old g. I. In the cartoons. Golly. Golly, golly, golly, golly. Well, gee, golly. Golly, nothing will happen to your car. Gomer pyle was many things, but it wasnt reflective to vietnam. I have to listen to him every night. Its like were married. My mother said there are enough idiots in The World without people acting like idiots. Its just pranks and fun. Pure escapism. An escape from 13 . Thats a good one. Hogans heroes was set in World War ii, It Debut In in the midst of the vietnam war. Go to the news reel. Hogans heroes, imagine the pitch. Guys, its going to be great. Lets do a sitcom about a nazi prisoner of war. Im just spit balling here. Im thinking nazis, men trapped without running water. Im in. My dad and i used to watch Hogans Heroes together and laugh, laugh, laugh. Hogan, hogan you see, hogan, never under estimate your enemy. Oh, i see nothing. I was not here. I did not even get up this morning. This is airing when there are many americans trapped in vietnamese prison camps, which are not a very funny thing to think about. Television was like, if we come up with really broad ideas that are very full of slap stick comedy, people will want to gravitate to that. Now, where did that come from . And with that you get to release all that angst. And with that comes humor. It is attacking humor is always an inversion. Its always, can we find what is ironic about this situation in some way . Colonel hogan. Colonel hogan. And thankfully we have sitcom as a medium to do that for us. Its an escape. Get ready to shop for first day fits and watch them remix it their way, find their favorites all in one spot. You probably think visa is a credit card company, huh . But its actually a network. We need it, because if you dont laugh, youre gonna cry. In the new York City area, blacked out last night. Bussing remains one of the most emotionally charged political issues in this country. The search for gas becomes an every other day ordeal. When youre looking at the 70s, there was a lot of lets not think about that complicated stuff right now. Lets make it go away. The Love Boat was the ultimate in fluff. Love exciting and new love, exciting exciting. I cant go that low. Exciting and new. Were expecting you. Yeah, you know the song. Were expecting you Love Boat the Love Boat makes you smile, doesnt it . My agent called me and said, alice wants you to do a thing called the Love Boat. Sounds grate. People joked abc stood for aarons tv. Aaron had a touch for knowing what the audience wanted to see. The Love Boat, sitcom or not a sitcom . Sitcom. Love boat was a new format for a sitcom. Love boat was not a sitcom. To me Love Boat was a sitcom. To me it expanded what we thought of was a sitcom. All i know was it was a hit. It was usually comprised of three story lines. One would be a pure comic story. One would be a melo dramatic story. How do you tell the lady you love shes never going to walk again . And one would be a romantic comedy. Im just a bartender, and youre a star. They used a laugh track, which was never really done especially in an hourfilmed show. Dont worry about the termites, lady. Because when your house falls, it will kill them. It had laughs, but they werent laughlaughs. I think a lot of them were pushed in there. You look like you want to dance. Well, not exactly. Oh, yes. Charro was outrageous. She was so free. Cuchi, cuchi. I was on the Love Boat four or five times. What are you gawking at . Well, i guess i didnt expect to see so much of West Virginia out here in the middle of the ocean. When i watch the Love Boat now, i really often marvel at how wrong some of those plots are. And ill be back with your prescription. I mean, its practically a caveman beating a woman over the head and dragging her back to his cabin. Hi. Times have changed. Now the Ships Doctor could not sleep with the passenger. The Love Boat provided an Escapists Experience in a literal sense of The World because you could feel like you were on a cruise escaping your life. Entertainment has changed. Everything has changed. But Human Beings are still Human Beings. People want happy endings. They need happy endings. Bye. Bye. And we gave it to them every saturday. In 1977, abc was pure escapism. It was a formula that really ensured success. Oh, come on. Dont take it so seriously. Abc was flying high with happy days, laverne shirley, the 6 Million man, the bionic woman. Abc could do no wrong, and Eight Is Enough was part of that era. Theres a magic in the early morning so the premise of Eight Is Enough is Tom Bradford has eight children. He, of course, has a wife, but that wife passed away. He falls in love again. The kids are still grieving the mother, now have to deal with this other woman. Abby and i are getting married to each other. We were the evolution of the brady bunch. Come on there. Theyll never know if we break a rule or two. Yeah, who is going to tell them . You wouldnt, would you . It was a longer form show. Why did you grant her for missing Din Sner . We knew where nancy was. We didnt know where you were. I was eating pizza. A family that sits down and discusses things, really . I wonder ant to know what yo going to do about tommy. He has a party. Mind your own business. Eight is enough is a return to something safe. Divorce rate is soaring in the 70s. The family is breaking apart. Im 8. I can understand complicated things. Nicolas, women are weird. Thats all. Now move. In the 70s, The World had come out of this incredible revolution, anger, and everybody is looking for chilling gum for the eyes. All of a sudden its like lets just watch a family thats working. There is growing evidence that the nations crack Cocaine Epidemic is taking a new and dangerous turn. In 1981 the number of crimes reported to the new York City Police Department reached a record high. People are tired. In the early 80s New York was a dangerous place. A lot of crime, a lot of conflict. People versus collins, Disturbing The Peace and assault. I cant be held accountable in a serial forced expelled from my body. Mag court consciously avoid the the realities of life in New York. We said, lets not be so serious. What Night Court was doing was presenting a happy face version. If you went to a Night Court in manhattan. The younger did nothing of her own will. It is my doing. Night court was more about the humor of the people involved. All this higher Consciousness Stuff . Huh . The whole point of it was like very weird people coming to this building every day. See you later. Do you have anything to say . Ill be brief. The characters were not dangerous and the crimes were usually very minimal. What are you going to do, spank me . The prosecutor is the Love Axel if i can say that. One of the funniest women ever. Do you see her . A little water might help that grow. Night court was all escapism. Mr. Shea is an amateur magician, your honor. Night court is a way to get america to pivot from the actual news, and you know thats not necessarily the reality of the situation, but thats why its called tv magic. That even successful magicians sometimes spend lifetimes fruitlessly trying to develop Night Court takes this gritty aspect of the city and gives you a sunnier version of it. Newhart happened at the same time as an interesting parallel with Night Court. Newhart is looking for an escape from New York and he goes to an idealized place, vermont. He was married to Suzanne Pleschet and he was a therapist. In the second series he was married to mary fran. I like it. No, you dont. I thought maybe the second show should be about an end. Thats really it up there, isnt it . What . Nature. In the flesh. If youd like, i can introduce you to maude. Im convinced the Reason Bob Newhart was excruciatingly funny is the thwarted decency. I bet you missed me. I do, too. I do, too. I do, too. [ laughter ] he does, okay . Bob newhart thrives as a comedian when surrounded by eccentric people. I got rid of the club in the event. George, what was it . I dont know, but when i woke it up, it ran off. They were able to surround him with really outstandingly creative characters. Im larry. This is my brother darrell. Thats my other brother darrell. They loved larry, darrell and darrell. I threw my back out last week crawling under a house. Sounds like a tough job. Wasnt a job. I just like crawling under a house. The most iconic facilinale w newhart. Bob newhart Fed A Fake Story to the newspapers. I told the cast what was going to happen. I didnt tell the crew. I said, when we have the scene, just keep shooting. Hey, wake up. You wont believe the dream i just had. [ laughter ] and she throws back the covers and its suzanne pleshette. Suzanne pleshette was snuck into the sound stage. What was it . I was an Inn Keeper in a crazy town. We just watched nine years of a dream. It managed to tie both shows up with a bow. It is probably the most escapist example of a sitcom series finale. [ applause ] can your longwear do this . Superstay active Wear Foundation from maybelline New York. Defies transfer. And water. Once upon a time, at the magical everly estate, Landscaper Larry and his trusty crew. Were delayed when the new kid totaled his truck. Timber. Fortunately, they were covered by progressive, so it was a happy ending. For almost everyone. We know how good it feels to be with our families, how it warms and comforts us, how it gives us strength and joy. During the regan era, there was this emphasis on being a good person. D. J. , were still a family. And now is when we really need to stick together. In the late 80s, after Eight Is Enough there were all these squishy soft focused families. Like full house. At that time the Family Sitcom was almost like a disney movie. Honey, i told you, everything is going to work out super great. Youve got it, dude. It puts pressure on american families to live Up To . Ideal that has not existed in decades, if it ever existed before. The economy is starting to kind of tank. Were at war. And, you know, were not going to live better than our parents. But when The Simpsons come along, they blow that apart. The simpsons The Simpsons is an escapist. No matter how much of a Couch Potato you are, theyre not going to be as bad as The Simpsons. What is the effect of Cigarette Smoking on dogs . I think its for people who werent alive to understand how controversial it was. Yes, im looking for a mrs. O problem, first name b. Bart was extremely disrespectful. Come on, b. O. , do i have a b. O. Problem . I was under the impression, children are never allowed to speak like that. What is going on up there . I think barts stupid again, mom. Theres no show that does the high Joke Density better. Well, im my own toughest critic, but i think its genius. That storytelling on The Simpsons was so unlike anything that came before it. There were Ore Nate Bnate baroq stories. So many characters on The Simpsons. Hes a great villain. His relationship with a rake. Destroyed him. The simpsons, great animations, love it. Tracey, what are you doing here . Youre all better. Nobody tells me these things. When The Simpsons came out, it was a massive hit. This could be the best day of my life. The simpsons helped usher in this modern era of adult animation. Hey, brian, whats up . Is animation necessarily an escapist form . Obviously visually youre looking at something usually more colorful than actual life. You can be risky and obscene and transgressive and really, really dig into humor that other shows are kind of afraid to touch. Ive been so bloody naughty. Pushing those barriers, it is wrong to eat Human Beings. Says you. South park took that a whole leap further. Oh, my god they killed kenny you bastards. They make bart seem like beaver cleaver. Hey lady. In the 90s, we see the rise of the concept of political correctness. Audiences were looking for an escape for that. Creators matt Stone And Trey parker showed the power and the comedy that you could find in being politically incorrect. All right, but it looks like we have 2 point wow, 2. 4 inches. I think about an animated show like South Park and its full of comments about modern subjects. I had a sex change operation. My penis is now a Virginia Gianni a and im experiencing Woman Hood for the first time in my life. See you in class. It would push the invest in such an extreme way, but in The Voice of a child. Jesus was black. Ronald regan was a devil, and the government is lying about 9 11. Boon docks were the black South Park. A dive deeper into the black community that white people dont see at all. These characters that arent human, they get to say things people might be afraid to say. How many times have i told you you better not dream about telling white folks the truth . One of the most hilarious episodes was martin Luther King coming back and seeing how black people were living and really being shocked about what he saw. I had a dream once, but low and behold, some decades later what have i found by a bunch of trifling, shiftless, Good For Nothing [ bleep ]. So whether its about racist white folks, whether its about black folks being problematic with themselves and their outlook on life, the Boon Docks is not pulling any punches. One thing for sure. Captai Cant Blame this one on the white man. What am i saying . Of course, i can. When i was a kid, my top sitcom was probably dinosaurs. It was bonkers. Everything the jim Hansen Company does is escapist. Hey, they did it. Thats great. The original idea was really generated in the year that my father Jim Henson passed away in 1990. He just liked the idea of dinosaurs who lived so irresponsibly that they will inevitably go extinct. In an operation of this magnitude theres bound to be some unfortunate casualties. For my dad, what he loved about sitcoms is when they could do something powerful what the show actually was was always warning. Sounds like wed be declaring war. Exactly. It had the 90s Style lets Take Care of the Climate Change messaging. You destroyed the food chain. No plants means no food at all. The finale of dinosaurs was the best finale for any Television Show ever. We kill them all. Are we going to move . Well, no, theres no place to move to. We always knew that that irresponsible treatment of the environment in dinosaurs had to destroy the planet. And because it was puppetry, because they werent Human Beings spouting at you, you tolerated it. Clearing breakouts doesnt have to be harsh on your sensitive skin. In The World of 2010s america, where we became increasingly aware of all the horrible inequalities that our society was built atop. Me too how do you exist within a world that is built to reward the worst people too often . No justice, no peace the way The World is changing, with women, black lives matter, all of it, were at a point now in comedy where people need to continue to push boundaries. Adult animation presents a brightly colored world that might seem more interesting than our own that sometimes is a better way to, like, make us face the ways in which our reality is being let down, particularly shows like Bojack Horseman. Well, that was another in a long series of regrettable life choices. What did you say . Bojack horseman is a netflix animated comedy that is set in an anthropoe more Fic Hollywood In which talking animals coexist with humans. Are you drunk . Todd, i weigh over 1,200 pounds. It takes a lot of beer to get me drunk. Yes. It imagines, okay, what if a mr. Edtype ended up becoming the dad in a full housestyle sitcom. We were lost, and now were found and now were horsing around [ belches ] he is a washedup sitcom star. Party at my house tonight. And hes turned into this kind of alcoholic, depressed, still rich, formerly famous actor. Nothings lonelier than a party. Good thing i dont need anyone. Oh, Bojack Horseman is so good. Lets move in together. Lets do it. It sucked you into forgetting that its an animated show, that these are talking animals. It became this perfect vessel to poke fun at a lot of excesses of our current culture. Bojack is harder on hollywood than anything equivalent in live Action Comedy of recent years. This is so sad. You always hear about mass shootings affecting other peoples moving openings, but you never think theyre going to affect your movie opening. In the latter seasons, you get this really dark, bitter who put pills in my house. Deeply moving account of a person who has been declining to face his problems for his entire life. What are you so happy about it . Theres something escapist about watching bojack dealing with these really heavyduty crises, which if you were watching a human do that in a sitcom, it would be devastating. Is it terrifying . Bojack horseman is asking a question a lot of us were asking, which is how do you be a good person . You know the way you feel when you see a chimpanzee and a Baby Tiger who have become friends . Thats how youre going to feel every day. [ applause ] the good place is a show about four people who died and went to hell, and a demon who made them believe that they were in heaven. During your time on earth, every one of your actions had a positive or a negative value. I sure liked the good place, i dont think it could have existed without animation pushing the boundaries of what people will watch. Today were going to start with Something Everyone has always wanted to do flying. [ applause ] now that youre dead, let live a little, right . I suppose theres a sort of fantasy or escapist element to it where theyre in a magical place where, you know, theres a character named janet who knows every fact about The Universe. Janet, im finished with cleanup, and im ready to fly. How do i start . Hop on the launchpad and conjure an image that brings you pure joy. People puking on roller coasters. People puking on roller coasters. But there is always a sort of weird looming threat. Ow, what the i think kept it from seeming like just pure escapism. Is that giant, terrifying ladybug supposed to be there . Great question. No, no its not. The good place came out in 2016 right when a lot of people were feeling incredibly disillusioned by trumps election. We will make america great again. The time i think when people were craving that kind of dialogue of talking to our better natures. Im sorry i was so grumpy. Its just i wanted to get my hair wet. I wanted to talk briefly to someone and then say, take it sleazy. I think theres so many big things happening in The World right now. To have a message that kind of is, its going to be okay, and this is your place in The Universe, keep trying to Take Care of your soul a little bit. The good place, i think its an actually perfect show. Anyplace or thing in The Universe can be Up To 104 perfect. Thats how you got beyonce. You dont realize that theyre talking about really deep, philosophical things, good and bad, and who are we at our core, and can we change . Oh, god the trolley problem. Were in a Trolley Car with chidi with his hands on the control trying to figure out who to kill and who not. It pointed out were faced with these horrible choices all the time, and we should have some empathy, you know, because theyre hard. Make a decision its tricky. I mean on the one hand, if you ascribe to a utilitarian it was a very funny scene. Okay. So what did we learn . Theres something escapist about letting all these things were dealing with here play out in this fantasy world. Thats the whole idea behind tv. I you want to escape. Good afternoon, eleanor. What can i get you today . I recommend full Cell Phone battery. Oh. It somehow tastes how i felt when my Cell Phone was fully charged. Oh, im so relaxed. People like laughing, and i think when they laugh, theyre more likely to listen to what you have to say. Nothing more human than that. Besides texting people that youre five minutes away when you havent even left the house. Thank you, eleanor. Youre very welcome. Jerusalem is the universal city, the chosen city, the holy city. Thats its blessing, but it also gives it its danger and its ugliness too, because it means that people believe that they must possess it absolutely. The palestinian israeli conflict
