67,000 tickets given out, 80 of them free. 12 and up have to Show Proof of vaccination to get in. The mayor calls the concert historic, celebration for a city thats overcome incredible challenges in the last year. The mayor teamed up with Producer Clive davis to produce tonights show that includes andrea bow check ee, ll cool j, Jennifer Hudson taking the stage. Paul simon, no stranger to concerts in Central Park, having performed two on the Great Lawn. And the boss, Bruce Springsteen will be performing as well. We wait to start a big show. Want to check in with reporters on the ground in Central Park. Erica Hill Tracking Tonights Music headlines. What do you expect . It is a great lineup to put it mildly. You hit on some of them, anderson. There are folks in the pen to my left excited about Andrea Bocelli and the boss. It is a city as diverse as the city of New York itself. A lot of hometown love, a lot of new York Artists and artists from all over. That plays to the diversity of the lineup. Theres a little of something in terms of music for everyone. New york philharmonic, Paul Simon, Jennifer Hudson, barry manilow, santana. The list goes On And on. It is a great assignment, i can tell you that, as you well know. Things are filling in since they opened gates at 3 00. We saw people running in, big smiles on peoples faces. It is hot and humid. Nobody seems to mind the weather, wanting to get as close as they could. Everybody has to be vaccinated, everybody eligible. Those 12 and up. Still seeing a fair amount of masks on as well, you can deep those on if you feel more comfortable. A lot of excitement in the Ariana Lot of celebration. This Hanna Long Battle as you know, being a New Yorker, long 17 months in this city. So lots to celebrate tonight. I also appreciate you not correcting me saying bocelli showed up, saying Bod Chel Ee instead of bocelli. Athena jones is with those entering the concert, have you been watching people as theyre showing their proof theyve been vaccinated . Reporter hi, anderson, thats right. This is a massive undertaking. As we have been saying, event ticketed for 60,000 people, everyone under 12 has to Show Proof of id. It can be a Vaccination Card or picture of it, something thats called new York State excelsior app. They have to Show Proof of vaccination with nid. Children under 12 have to show they had a negative Covid Test in the last 72 hours and must wear a mask because theyre unvaccinated. As we have been saying, this is billed as celebration of New York. The mayor calling it a historic, momentous moment, celebrating all of the hard working New Yorkers that struggled so much in the last year and a half of the pandemic, but they want to do it safely as possible. Organizers say you cant make this entirely risk free but you can mitigate the risk by making it outside, making sure everyone has one shot of vaccine if coming in. They encourage use of masks, not requiring it. But there are thousands of masks to give out. They point out, new York City is already a heavily vaccinated city to give you one indication. 75 of adults in New York received at least one dose. This is a celebration of the city, celebration of the city workers, and in some ways, reward to people who are following the public health guidance, doing the right thing getting vaccinated to protect themselves, their families, their community. Well check in with you shortly. It is a remarkable lineup. They have great guests. It is unprecedented, anderson. Over 20 of the biggest Music Icons will be taking the stage. I have been talking to people through the week and clive Davis Son earlier today, many say it is our version of woodstock. It is not a multi die fest da festival, many of them that Clive Davis discovered. Bruce springsteen, he signed him to his first deal. This is live television. It is going to be on a rotating stage. That in itself as a music lover, i love going to festivals and concerts, interesting to see. One act is performing, another act is getting ready to come on. Hopefully theres a seamless transition. Might be a little rain. I am telling you, some of the greatest musical performances happened in the rain. Diana ross in Central Park, singing in the rain. Prince at his super Bowl Half time concert. There was a lot of mud at woodstock and other things, i heard. This has a different vibe, sunday New York vibe. What i will say, anderson, this will be one of those moments that youre going to say you were either there or watched it. And youre going to know somebody that was there. Hs historic. A huge monumental undertaking. Especially at a time where people havent been together and to suddenly see people together in a way, doing it safely as they can. New York City working hard to vaccinate people. Joining me, mayor of new York City, bill de blasio. Thanks for being with us. Why have a concert, a lot of people watching this will obviously, a, think it is a fine idea, others will say is this the best time, theres a hurricane coming and covid. Aennderson, we have to show strength and resiliency. New yorkers have been through so much but fought through it, did the right thing, got vaccinated. 75 , one dose of the vaccine. What we are doing In The City, were saying if you want to be part of the great things in life, concerts, restaurants, everything, get vaccinated. This is a reward. Reward to the essential workers and to everyday New Yorkers doing the right Thing And Message to people all over this country. We can do great things together. Just go out and get vaccinated. What are you doing to keep People Safe . Outdoors, fully vaccinated. Mask distribution. Lots of space. It is a big, open setup. People are able to spread out, they were spreading blankets. Yes, theyre spaced. Look, we say to people we want it to be safe. Most important thing, our doctors said this consistently. You want to be safe, want to defeat the Delta Variant once and for all, it is all about vaccination. Nothing compares. What were seeing now is as we have concerts like this and indoor dining is all vaccination, were seeing upsurge in people coming forward to get vaccinated. Over 100,000 people each of the last two weeks got vaccinated the first time. 60 of them people of color. Theres been real concerns legitimately about disparity with vaccinations. When you give people an opportunity to get a positive outcome and also say this is what we have to do and we are providing 100 incentive for everyone coming forward, we are seeing a surge in vaccinations. You only need one vaccination also for return to indoor dining, going to gyms, why did you go for that, not fully vaccinated . As incentive. You say to people you have to wait a month for both shots, some people are put off by that obviously. I want instant gratification. I want people to know, you want to go in that restaurant, movie theater, concert, get vaccinated now. An hour later, having a great time. You should go back, get the second shot. Vast majority of New Yorkers go back for a second shot. We feel confident about that. I think the notion of making it positive. What an amazing life In The City. People are celebrating. Artists want to show love for new York City, faith in new York City. But it is also a message to everyone that simple act of getting vaccinated makes everything else possible. How do you enforce that, not here, we see people checking, but there are a lot of Small Business Owners say i am barely getting biy as it is, make Me Te Police Officer to check Vaccination Cards is too much. Small business has been through a lot. Restaurants, bars. First of all, what were saying, for next month, give people a chance to get used to it, get them training and support. Also, remember every business has some version, ones were talking about, Restaurants Card people for age before serving drinks, bars. You go to a health club, fitness club, you check in, show your id, whatever it is. Theres a way to do this for sure. And what were seeing is a lot of customers are saying thank you. Owners of businesses saying thank you because theyre not the ones making the decision, the City Government said you have to do this. Customers feel safe now and their employees are safe. Thats what they appreciate. Schools starting in a few weeks, youre not requiring vaccination for kids over 12 to get back to school why . We are encouraging it and supporting it, we have over 300,000 kids now in the 12 to 17 range already vaccinated, almost a month out from school, heavy back to School Vaccination Drive going. Well see more kids vaccinated. Theres been so much misinformation. A lot of parents need help to believe in it and be ready. I dont want to exclude kids from education in the meantime. What we said to all our City Government employees, they have to be vaccinated or do the weekly test. We have been climbing a ladder in terms of mandates and policies and we will add policies to keep People Safe. Can you see a time when it is mandatory evacuation . Weekly tests once a week is better than nothing, but not ideal. No, but it is something that is a challenge for people to have to do that every week. If they dont do it, there are penalties. Being inconvenient, get vaccinated. A lot of them are saying im going to go ahead and get vaccinated. We need our kids back in school, i am adamant about this. Were not having remote like last year, we saw the tremendous limitations of remote for our kids, not just educationally for social and physical wellbeing. Kids are coming back to school. We set a Gold Standard of Health And Safety protocols in our schools. It worked. Last year, incredibly safe in new York City public schools, safer than almost any place else In The City. Now we have 5. 2 million New Yorkers, at least one dose, 300,000 kids in 12 to 17 range. I am confident this will be a safe setting because we are putting all these measures in place at once. Talk about the storm. Henri, french storm. What are you expecting for new York City. Obviously it is supposed to make landfall sunday, not exactly clear, you can never predict exactly where it makes landfall. After this, i am holding a Press Conference to tell people of new York City first of all be very careful tomorrow. I want people off the streets, staying home and safe, heavy winds, rain in new York City. It will be worse in other places like eastern long island. Really concerned for friends and neighbors there. In new York City i think Wind And Rain are the first issues of concern. Some coastal areas we are concerned about flooding. Last we are hearing, it will be late Night Tonight before we see anything. But were going to get ready, have a variety of measures to protect people. Number one thing, good news about New Yorkers, they hear the messages an act on them. Thats why 75 of adults have gotten it. I am telling all New Yorkers stay home tomorrow. Stay out of harms way. What do you hope folks around the country watching this concert, Around The World watching this concert take away from it, besides being entertaining, what does it say about new York City . That new York City is back, that we are strong and resilient, that New Yorkers, Heart And Soul New Yorkers, thats why we came through this crisis. All these amazing artists. It is arguably the greatest lineup since woodstock. Really. It is an unbelievable lineup. Theyre all doing it because they love new York City and want to help new York City come back and believe in new York City. And to everyone out there, come visit us, join us. Because of all of that vaccination one of the safest places to be in america. Broadway is coming back full strength. Everything you love about new York City, open, ready for you. We talked about this before we went on air, all the people that were talking, articles written about Death F the city, new York City. This is certainly to me as lifelong New Yorker a reminder of part of what makes New York New York. Theres not a lot of cities can pull off something like this with this lineup of people, it is free for people that want to come. Got New York value, too, anderson. We wanted it to be for everyday people. Didnt want it to be just for those that have done well. Vast majority of tickets are for everyday people to celebrate the city. Yes, we can do things here that the whole world looks at with Appreciation And Admiration and what were saying to folks is believe in this place. There were doubting thomases, beginning of covid, lot of voices didnt understand that history you referred to. Plenty of people, New Yorkers and around the country stood up and said dont bet against new York City. Not only the nations largest city, it represents everything in america, every kind of american. People from All Over The World. Thats the glue. Somehow all of humanity gathered in one place to make something stronger, greater than the sum of the parts. Thats what were celebrating today. And new York City is back. New York City is going to higher heights after covid. Mayor bill de blasio, appreciate it. A lot going on in the crowd. Paul simon, Bruce Springsteen, Jennifer Hudson moments away. Well be right back. You perform on the late show, now youre in front of a big audience. What does it feel like . It is crazy, i didnt think anything like this could happen. Facing so much with the pandemic. For us to pull together, bring people together in the spirit of togetherness, thats what i play for. Thats the reason i play. Yeah. Lets be honest, before you walked up, both of us were wearing masks, talking to each other now distanced and everything. We are back sort of. We have a ways to go. Do you keep that in mind as youre doing this . It aint over til its over. We have such a ways to go. I dont think were actually going to get there unless we focus on getting people the vaccine, focus on getting people to understand that were not out of it. Even if were performing tonight. Everything thats happening tonight is an example of what can happen if we get together and get out of this. I love hearing you say it aint over til its over. Get out of this. You know, i been here for ten years, i still cannot get rid of it, i dont want to. Youre all about spirit, all about heart. What helped you get through this. And i think oh, they could get through things they got through, not so bad for me. Youre busy five days a week doing what you do. Why did you decide to do this. This is a big undertaking to do this. I love, love, love, love, love playing for people. I love giving people this musical offering because i think it is last time i performed for this many people was in a protest. We marched and i led a protest in Union Square after the execution of George Floyd and breonna taylor. For me it is not really about the idea of playing for myself. Im always playing for people, always playing to connect to god. If i can connect to god through my offering, i know thats going to move the people, i dont have to worry about myself. I ride the wave. I get out of the way. Let the wave take me. John, youre the best. Proud of you. Homeboy. Love seeing you all the time. Appreciate you being here. John baptiste, everyone. Stay human. Lets do it. Joining me, the music legend himself, Clive Davis. Thank you so much for being with us. You have launched the careers of so many people. Why did you want to produce legendary concert like this that were about to see tonight . Well, first of all, i was asked by the mayor who called me up and said at a meeting with his team, the City Event Organization and The Park commission, they were saying youre the only one that can do this. Whether thats true or not, he asked me. Look, anderson, i am a born and bred New Yorker. My whole education, work ethic, Ps 161 in brooklyn, to arrive in High School in brooklyn, and nyu, and when i had no money, my parents died when i was a teenager, i had 4,000 to my name. New york rose up, gave me scholarships, both to nyu and i am indebted to New York and its culture. I learn music, i learn the symphony and i learn broadway as well as pop and rock. So i am totally indebted to new York City. I love that allegiance to New York and that history that you have with this. Theres really no more special place than Central Park to celebrate the reopening of the city, especially with all the city and all of us have gone through, the musical history just in this park. You think that Diana Ross concert in the rain, i remember as a kid James Taylor had a free concert in Central Park with a huge turnout. It is an iconic space to have an event like this. Without question. I was there with simOn And garfunkel, witnessing Barbara Streisand and others. It couldnt be a greater venue in order to celebrate the reopening of New York, so this was a challenge. This is not one artist. Weve come up with about 18 iconic or new artists to represent, anderson, every genre of music. Were talking rap, pop, broadway, even classical music. We have the New York philharmonic. All 75 members of them. Were going to make use of this incredible stage and venue. How long does it take to prepare something like this . Well, we have been working on it, i would say a total of 8 weeks. Thats it . Wow. I would have thought this was like a six month process. Oh, no. No, no, no. I got called about two months ago and obviously i went to those artists, i was personally not only involved with, but our lifelong relationship maintains to this very day. I called Bruce Springsteen, and i knew it might involve a cancellation of one night of this incredible broadway run, but did he respond, yes. He is going to do a song, incredible duet with the great patty smith. And of course i called patty and Paul Simon, barry manilow, Jennifer Hudson, artists that i had even discovered or been working meaningfully with them. That formed the initial nucleus. With my team of Doug Davis and others, we went out and recruited, calling the manager first, but going after the best artists of the genre that i was talking about. Cynthia erivo will sing two incredible broadway songs, and miluma is going to be there, and the killers, Elvis Costello. Youve seen the list of names. I think these artists are the real deal. These artists are the best ambassadors really of music of any genre, and creatively when i called ll cool jay and we wanted to capture his historic icons from New York, how to present it, he came up with the brilliant idea that he will interface with busta rhymes. I am sure you heard a boogie with a hoodie. It will be fascinating. I have to tell you, Elvis Costello was the first concert i went to as a kid, for his Armed Forces album. One of the great albums. As a son of the city, whats your message on this day to all those in The Park, to all those In The City who have been through so much . We have been through a painful, debilitating pandemic. We must remain vigilant. We must take every Safety Measure to i am e to emerge. Broadway is coming back. Great restaurants of New York are reopening. And music once again, this comes with all these great artists and great songs that theyll be Singing And Playing will serve to tell the rest of the world, that New York, Culture Capital of the world without question, the Melting Pot bringing you dont have to if you play, you can put on Tennessee Williams and great musicals. So the great city of New York is being reopened and music is the messenger. From one son of the city to another, Clive Davis. Thank you. Thank you for doing this and being with us today. Thank you. Thanks so much. While we await the concert, keep track of the severe weather heading to the northeast. Meteorologist Chad Myers is tracking it. 5 00 advisory, a hurricane, 75 miles per hour.
