That is not that is too high . The estimate we have is somewhere between 50,000 to 65,000 counting their families. Does the commit hold for them as well . The commit holds to getting everyone out that we can get out and enshveryone that should com out. That is the path were on and i think well get there. So americans should understand that troops may have to be there beyond August 31 . No, americans should understand that well try to get it done before August 31. But if we dont, troops will stay . If we dont, well determine at the time who is left. And . And if there are american forces if there are american citizens left, well stay until we get them all out. Well, look, i think he is certainly defensive and i think that defensiveness is getting in the way of acknowledging mistakes that would be in his interests to acknowledge would help him get past this. On the other hand, i think he doesnt believe he is missing the point. He thinks his critics are. The point being that the immediate collapse unexpected which he acknowledges of the afghan Government And Security forceS Proves hiS Point that this war was not worth continuing and that, second, under those circumstances, there is no way that you could avoid a mess. And then third, having gotten had the Government Collapse and had the scenes of Panic And Chaos ensue, that the military has in fact gotten control of the Kabul Airport and they are undertaking this evacuation. We have not had large Scale Loss of life, we have not incurred u. S. Casualties. And so i think that the president s belief is that that is the point and that he is going to do and the military will do the best they can to conduct that evacuation and bring this to a conclusion. So john, how does the President Pivot to refocus on some very important domestic priorities . Were still in the middle of the pandemic, he is trying to get everybody vaccinated who hasnt already been. His Infrastructure Deal is sort of hanging on now potentially by a thread when it was once sort of a clear path for victory. How does he refocus things now . Well, he is trying given the Dom Thainance of this steerory importance of the situation. We saw it yesterday with the announcement on Booster Shots and the steps he is taking including telling Nursing Homes they might lose Head Care Medicaid funding if they dont mandate vaccinations. So he is trying to stay on top of that situation. He conducted a meeting in the last couple days, his aides have, with congressional leaders to try to keep that Infrastructure Deal on track, a senior Administration Official told me for all the criticism he is taking on afghanistan, the democrats in congress recognize that his success is going to be their success and they believe they remain on track. It is challenging and you have discord within the democratic Caucus And House on the way to proceed, but i think that they are trying to juggle as many balls as they can recognizing that this as Jeff Zeleny said in that piece is the most challenging moment of hiS Presidency. And jeff also in that piece talked about sort of rattled nerves among some of our global allies. What does this mean for biden on a global scale . You know, nato leaders are counting on biden to steady the ship here. What can he do to repair that damage if there is damage . I think that the most important way he can steady the ship is by ramping up and sustaining the evacuation of american citizens and afghan allies from afghanistan. About 6,000 so far according to White House officials. Military leaders said yesterday that they were processing about 500 people an hour into the Kabul Airport. They have about 60,000 people by President Bidens accounting still to get out. He said yesterday he would extend that August 31st deadline if there are american citizens still to get out, but it is very important to see what the status of those afghan allies is going to be. That would be a Confidence Rattling situation for the administration if in fabt many of those people get stuck behind and suffer adverse consequences for the taliban. So the president was a little bit equivocal on whether or not he would extend the deadline for thon a nonamerican citizens, but the most significant thing that the biden administration can do right now is get up to that 5,000 to 9,000 evacuees a day that they have set as a target, sustain that for as long aS Possible and see how many of those people they cannot only get from Kabul Out To Safety but also from the countryside to the Kabul Airport so that they can evacuate them. Huge logistical challenge. And they depend to a degree on the taliban. That is a shaky position. But the administration believes that they have leverage over the taliban including financial leverage. The imf has frozen special drawing rights, the treasury has frozen billions of dollars in afghan assets in u. S. Financial institutions. Thankfully fewer people died during this earthquake compared to previous similar quakes. Imagine as one person told us if it had happened on a Sunday Morning when church was full. Critics would say it is a mixture of corruption and a lack of will leading to this government inaction. Others will point to the recent assassination of the haitian president causing turmoil in the government. Others will point to the fact that infrastructure here in the Country Wasnt very good to begin with. The taliban according to british officials have been cooperating and allowing people through, but obviously Clarissa Ward saw a very different series of Events Yesterday when she attempted to investigate what was going on there coming into Contact And Something of a clash with local elements of the taliban. And that really is a microcosm of the challenges that the taliban will be facing in the future. Not only are they trying to improve their international Public Relations effort, but on the ground they have got very violent, very potentially undisciplined elements that they dont have full control over. And that is going to be the major challenge in the future. But here in doha, american officials are still liaising with the taliban and with the qatari emirate in order to bring in large numbers of evacuees from Kabul Airport into doha and then processing them on into the countries where they are supposedly heading. And mostly to the united states but not entirely. This has been a desperate effort that joe biden, the u. S. Reporter the president saying that troops may have to stay past the August 31st deadline if Evacuation Efforts are not yet completed. Wednesday morning The Pentagon said August 31 was still the date they were looking at but yet Wednesday Afternoon they didnt make any reference to August 31 or The End of the month, an apparent signal that The Pentagon was ready for the possibility that u. S. Troops may need to stay longer as the Evacuation Fin continues but no fast enough. And that is the key. Processing of not only afghan interpreters and their Family Members who have helped the u. S. And trying to get out of the country simply not at the pace it needs to be to pull out everyone that the u. S. Is looking to withdraw. Here is Secretary Austin acknowledging the pace needs to pick up. Really working hard to get as many people through aS Possible and quite frankly, were not it is obvious were not close to where we want to be in terms of getting the numbers through. So well work that 24 hours a day, 7 days a week and well get everyone that we can possibly evacuate evacuated. And ill do that as long as we possibly can until the clock runs out or we run out of capability. And the challenge is not only at the airport where afghans have flooded. The u. S. Embassy has warned american citizens still in the country that it cannot guarantee Safe Passage to cab bikabuls international parmt. And airport. And that is the only way in or out of the country. There were some 18 aircraft that left wednesday carrying some 2,000 people, but that pace is not high enough, that is only about 110 people per flight on average, nowhere near the pace it needs to be if The Pentagon hopes to hit its number of 5,000 to 9,000 people a day. And if that number doesnt go up, it may draw out the need for u. S. Troops on the ground and that of course is relying on communication with the taliban, that communicationongoing, but it hasnt clearly been able to stabilize the situation at and around the airport. School boards are trying to keep kids safe where state governments wont. In florida the Palm Beach County School Board Voting in favor of a mask mandate. And it joins three other counties in defying Governor Desantis. Many kids remain unvaccinated of course, but Governor Desantis says it should be up to the prntS Parents to decide what happens to kids exposed to the coronavirus in school. I dont think to say anyone that was in like a hallway or in a classroom, that they even if they are healthy should be sent home. Many a parent would want a healthy kid to be quarantined if there is a exposure, but i think that should be the choice of the parent. Kids under 12 still not vaccinated yet. But for adults, Booster Shots will be offered to americans beginning septemberwain. We need to recognize that if were starting to see waning immunity in disease, we may see it in hospitalizations especially those most vulnerable. Well, i think the best argument is that we really need to pursue both objectives. We already have vaccine here in the united states available. We know that we have waning immunity in people and that we need to provide this Booster Shot for optimal protection. But of course at the same time we need to be partnering with the whog. H. O. And other Public Health authorities to ensure that everybody has the opportunity to get vaccinated. Of course if we dont do that in a timely manner, what we risk is the possibility that well see other variants that arrive that could be as bad or potentially even worse than delta. So do both and more faster essentially. This Culture War over masks has been just so frustrating. And this recent Axios Poll shows actually 69 of americans support mandatory masking in americas schools. And the five biggest School Districts in the state of florida are defying governor Ron Desantis and his antimask stance. The governor in florida claims there is no definitive Study Showing that masks stop the spread in kids. Help our and Yudience Understany Governor Desantis is wrong. There are a number of studies showing that masks help prevent the frespread of disease in schools. Where masks are not being used, those children are at Hire Risk for covid. And certainly we know that masks are very effective in adults. And i think one thing that is very important when we do make Public Health recommendations that we always think about is what the Trade Joefs are between the risks and the benefits. We know very well that the risks of masks are essentially nil. We never see in our pediatricians office, in our emergency departments, children coming in due to complications from masks. However, we did see children coming in sick with covid. Some of them and thankfully not as often as adults, some of them severely ill. And requiring hospitalization. Sometimes in the intensive care unit. Masks are very simple. They are proven to be effective. And we know that they are safe. And while choice is always a good thing, we also need leadership and we need Public Health leadership, we need our elective leaders also to help guide us toward what those best decisions are so our parents can make and support those best decisions. What else can really be done though at thiS Point other than masks given that Kids Cant get vaccinated, our youngest Kids Cant get vaccinated . The cdc says Hospitalization Rates for children now are higher than they have ever been, younger adults also at risk. Are masks really the only tool we have right now to sort of stop this downward spiral for kids . I have to say, having a young child, i feel like he is just a sitting duck. And masks of course are not our only tool that we have. And it is really important that in all settings we use all the tools that we have available to us because none of them including vaccine, none are 100 perfect to help protect us against covid. And so in addition to masks, what we focus on are ensuring that there is some distancing between students, 3 feet has become a widely used standard across our schools. We also try to ensure that ventilation in schools is adequate.
