Our commanders at the airport are in communication with taliban commanders on the ground outside the airport. There have been discussions, Theres Communication between them and us. And i would just let the results speak for themselves. Im not going to get into the details of how those discussions are progressing. Great to see. Barbara starr is at the pentagon. Reporter john, its remarkable enough that the u. S. Military on the ground is talking to the taliban because Job Number one is to keep that airport secure, not see the dire scenes that The World saw yesterday of thousands of afghans rushing to aircraft, rushing the airfield. Much calmer today and thats why they believe they can make progress in getting americans out. The estimate is 5 to 10,000 americans still in average. Many in kabul. But it could be even more than that because they are not at all certain they have a firm handle on americans out in various places in the country. Now another 1,000 troops laughing landed and a lot of froops the 82nd Air are borne division. That elite Divisions Command will now take control of the Airport Mission that the u. S. Military has. 82nd Airborne commander will be on the ground. Hell take control. This is something that 82nd, of course, does in combat, in war time, take control of airfields. It is basically the same task but, of course, this is an airport full of civilian, full of people fleeing for their lives. They will take control and try and keep order. Right now the hope is that they can get those 5 to 7,000 people out every day. If they can establish that air bridge, if they can bring in enough aircraft, fill them up with people, turnaround and send them out, the hope is that all of this still gets done by The End of the month. That is the promise the u. S. Has made. The taliban, obviously watching very carefully, not yet making any moves against the u. S. Thats a very important Data Point right now. Another pressing question what about afghans desperate to leave or those who want to know is it safe to go outside . You can see the pictures. Taliban fighters line the streets of kabul. In full control across the country. Old fears of brutal rule, especially for women have roared back to life. Clarissa ward was on kabul streets this morning. Reporter the taliban told all people who worked for the government they can go back to their jobs. We saw policemen directing traffic on the streets. Were in a busy market. Not all the stores are open but certainly a good amount of them. I cant see a single woman on the streets. Its just part of reality. Youre going to see far fewer women on the streets because women are frightened and they Cant Trust the guarantees or the assurances that theyve been given by the taliban because they know differently from history. They know differently from rural areas where the taliban is in control. Today the taliban promised amnesty to Government Workers and said they would not victimize women. But for thousands that helped The Americans theres little appetite to stick around and find out if the taliban are telling the truth. Not just as interpreters or with american diplomats but inside afghanistan itself school principals and the like trying to bring progress to afghan people. Those are the ones who are afraid. But, of course, within everything the taliban has said its always within the framework of islamic Sharia Law and we dont know how they will interpret it as a governing principle. We know what they mean. They said again today that were still a religious entity but they said we matured and changed since 2001 and we want to have international relations. I think its not surprising that the United States diplomats and military in the Airport Perimeter are speak with the taliban about their operations. United states only engaged with the taliban in doha, qatar so they have several months or a year or more of engaging with the taliban. This is not new. Something thats been under way for a While And Something that contributed to the complete Despair And Discouragement and collapse of the afghan forces because u. S. Under the Trump Administration in fact cutout the afghan government in its initial Peace Talks and gave the taliban a deadline and a nonconditions based promise of withdrawal. So test of today to the point about is this a new taliban, are they more moderate, will they treat women more kindly, more gracefully, well know those answers in weeks and months. But in the Here And Now the immediate challenge to the people you just mentioned. If youre an afghan that worked with United States or some international Aid Group and you want to get out especially if youre an afghan woman, how will we know, will the taliban, for example allow corridors of safety if the United States or uk or anyone wanted to go from kabul to some other remote area of the country, find people, put them on a bus, bring them to kabul and fly them out. How will we know if that will play out or is that a Pipe Dream . Reporter thats a very good question because many people will fall through the cracks. The british Defense Secretary was practically in Tears Yesterday when he actually said quote many will not come back. In other words, those to whom they made promises of Safety And Evacuation will not receive that Safety And Evacuation. This is something that even international diplomats and ministers are having to confront. It is the big ethical and moral dilemma of this whole failure, this messy withdrawal of the United States forces and nato to allow the Taliban Unimpeded Walk in to take control. This will be the defining condition of that american withdrawal. If they can protect all those people who want protection and get them out that will at least be something because they have made promises to them. And what were seeing on the other hand is a massively slow handling of the special immigrant via sas, the sivs all over the place whether in the United States, whether in britain, and much is owed these afghans who put their lives at risk for 20 years to help a project conducted by the United States, britain and other force. As you say clearly the u. S. Could be negotiating safe passage, corridors, putting people who want to leave and need to leave on transport to get them out. Its very unlikely that the u. S. Or others will go into the hinterlands and Hand Pick but to get them to Kabul Airport which they control 6,000 forces. Thats a huge force to control the afghan airport and it could be put to very good use. I think that will be a test of whether this withdrawal maintains at least a shred of honor to those to whom promises were made and to those who put their lives at risk for the u. S. Well put. In the remarks he made no comments about the afghan people or the big question that a lot of democrats have for him, which is about the execution and how this happened. He talked about the decision, which a lot of democrats dont have an issue with the decision. A lot of lawmakers say they stand by him and the decision he made, but that the execution is what they want answers on and they still arent getting answers on. Theres supposed to be a classified briefing next week for Hill Lawmakers but they havent gotten any of the details about why the administration was so unprepared when they made this decision and why they didnt expect afghanistan to fall earlier. And, craig your report, you have access to thousands of pages, documents going through the 20 year history, frankly lies and corruption in afghanistan. You hear from the biden administration they were surprised by the pace of the taliban takeover. They were surprised that ghani up and left. They were surprised the afghans didnt leave. The o the talibans brokered with many officials. You have access to these documents and this reporting. The president of the United States should know this. Is this a surprise, another lie from american leadership . Well thats a good question. Well have to find out. The biden administration has a lot of tough questions coming their way. In term of the speed of the collapse of the Afghan Army and police, there were signs in Op Reporting in Media Reports in recent weeks and months. We would hear about outposts of Afghan Police or soldiers who didnt have any food, didnt have any ammunition. Well, shouldnt be that way. The u. S. Is paying their salaries, supplying them with weapons, ammunition, food. We were footing the bill for all this. That should have been a clear Sign Corruption had gotten so bad in recent months that afghan military chanders, general, pocketing all this money. They knew The End was coming. Let their people isolated and vulnerable in the front. So of course those people threw up their arms when the taliban came through. This is in the context of what laura and craig said. The president asked his team how they could misjudge how long it would take for the Afghan Army to collapse. He voiced dismay of the afghan. President who fled the country on sunday to adhere to a path he laid out in june. He said im the guy to gets it. I get The World. I know how to manage things. Im the guy you want as president. Thats why this could not only be humanitarian problem, a crisis of confidence, this could end up being a political problem for joe biden. He did run on competence, on this record and were not seeing it yet. Its very early. But whether this combined with some of the resurgence of covid, some of the other economic issues in the country, this could end up being a problem and the biden white house, the biden political operation, frankly, had banked on americans everyone in afghanistan knew it would go badly once the u. S. Troops lost. That was not a surprise. The pace was the surprise, according to the white house. And so they were the polling had been in favor of pulling out of afghanistan with The American public. But to your point, how it happened. And congressional hearings will happen. Where these questions will be attempted to answer that will be in the public eye. Well see how that plays out. Part of the challenge is now they are trying to evacuate americans, trying to evacuate afghans that served with americans or other western organizations who feel at risk. I want you to listen to a military veteran a democrat in congress and an ally of biden. He said why did the troops leave before you got the State Department employees out, before you got the afghans out . They planned this contingency then they would have gotten our friends and allies out of afghanistan a long time ago. If the they had done that we wouldnt see the chaotic scenes at Kabul Airport today. I dont see how you can make the case he planned for this contingency. Its clearly catching us by surprise. How could that have happened . Again if you tread amazing work that youre working on and im looking forward to the book, its all laid out. Its laid out in the documents that he has access to, his national Security Team has access to. They have access that you havent seen. Anyone who served in the military said this was a flashing light. If you took the Contractor Out who were supporting the police and military. Took troops out. This was going to happen. Shouldnt be a surprise to anybody. It gets back to the old scene. A lot easier to start a war than end one. In their defense the biden administration was worried about instituting panic that if they started bringing out large numbers of afghan interpreter, people that helped the United States, if the afghan people saw these Plane Loads of people that helped americans leaving the country that really would have started a really panic and they were worried that would undermine what was left of the afghan government if they were taking all these allies out who supported america what does that say . They essentially are saying this will collapse fast. They were between a rock and a hard place but multiple failures. Foreign Policy Policy to judge what was happening with the afghan. Government. There was failure in planning. And a military operational failure to have the airport concerned, the embassy people ready to come out if necessary and this all came together in the last week and just doesnt look good. Every one of them had not gotten their vaccines. This is so preventable at this point in the epidemic. Thats what makes it sad because it is so preventable. You mentioned the hospitalizations. Now the deep green the higher the hospitalization, the change for 100,000 residents. You see the greatest problem is down here from florida across into texas, the southern part, not southeast but from the southeast over to texas in the beginning of the west and this is where the biggest problem is in terms of hospitalizations. Also where kids go Back To School earlier in most of the country starts going Back To School. Its also in many of these states, the florida and texas where you have republican governors saying i dont want masks in schools mandating you cant do that or putting restrictions in place to make it hard for communities. This man says what he worries about as kids go Back To School, as hospitalizations spike, we dont know enough about children. Texas and florida where cases are so high we have no idea the numbers of children in hospitals. Talking about flying blind relative to children. We need better data and thats got to be basis for action. I want to come back to the Masking Politics in a question. To that point, what do we need to know about children and covid or do we wish we knew about children and covid as more and more go Back To School. I couldnt agree more strongly with the admiral. We dont know whether Delta Variant gets kids more sick or whether its just that they are more likely to get sick because it transmits so much more easily. We dont know what degree of prevention measures we need in schools. We know that masks help. We know ventilation helps. Do we need to be doing weekly screening . The process is so hard to communicate. We see, i mean, fortunately there are elected representatives who are stepping up saying send me the names of people who need to evacuate. And that is welcomed, but ive seen at least four different lists of afghans who are awaiting evacuation, and right now the only thing we can tell them is added your name to all of the lists because we dont know what list is going to work. Theres a lot of these folks do not have visas because the process has been so bureaucratic, so problematic, so delayed and long that they have not been able to get those visas. Some of them are unable to get passports for their spouse, for their young children. This is and they are concerned about will they be allowed to get on a flight. Will they get the call. I have interpreters saying im staying safe in hiding like you told me to, im still waiting on a call. When will i get a call. And we dont know. We dont know because theres no process. This is chaos. We dont know. The Pentagon Spokesman said today, i asked him what can i tell these people that come up to me how i do get safety. He said well do everything we can quote in the next couple of weeks out. Do your people think they have a couple of weeks . No. No. They do not. I am worried every day for the folks who i am close with. Im also message with people who i have never met before but reaching out the me and im concerned about them. But my deep care is for the folks who identify worked with and their families. And so like im tracking every day to see, okay, you know, is it is it daytime in afghanistan yet. Am i hearing the is there a sign of life. Are they still okay, are they still okay . Were all worried. The taliban is reportedly outside of the airport. There are still masses of afghans going to the airport desperate to get on a flight. And also we dont know what to tell them. We do know to tell them to stay away from the north gate, go towards where there are friendlies because there are unfriendlies who are guarding some of the guests the. This is i mean this is a massive airport with many different entrances and we dont even know if they can get in and once they get in what does that mean . So, this is theres not guidance that is clear that any of the people im speaking with or message with have heard. Theres not clear guidance. And people are in fear for their lives and its good news that were hearing about Evacuation Flights. I want to applaud that. But this needs to be, you know, a massive 24 Hour Effort and there needs to be guidance and a way to do this where people understand whats going on. Also people dont have consistent internet, they dont have consistent power, and they are worried they are going miss a call. You work in logistics. I heard an interview you gave up in new york city. I want to see a picture. Some Evacuation Flights are getting out. 600 afghans crowded into the belly of a c 15. They took off even though they were loaded. They wanted to get those herros to safety. Thats one flight. The taliban said this came is a new taliban, no Reincriminate Na recriminations. I assume you dont believe that. I heard that spokesman in 2010 when he bragged his comrades, the taliban had overrun my base. And had killed americans on my base. That wasnt true. What they did was take the afghans who bravely defended the small base i was on and so hes been lying at least since 120. And i think hes counting on the international press to either not look into all of the lies and hes told all of the atrocities, hes justified all the killings of afghans that the taliban has committed that hes papered over. More afghans have been killed by taliban than americans. And so i wish i could believe him. Maybe that Cargo Plane will be a symbol that america doesnt leave its friends behind and we did our best to promote democracy. The President Said he was the one making the tough call.
