Health officials expect that a booster will also be needed for The One Shot Johnson Johnson vaccine. This is a major expansion, and it comes just a week after boosters were first recommended for people with weakened immune systems. An official announcement on the expansion could come this week, and it comes as the Delta Variant spreads new cases across the country leading to a crush of patients in hospitals, primarily among the unvaccinated. Cnns Jeff Zeleny is live at the White House this morning where this News Emanated from, jeff. Whats going on . Reporter john, good morning. The biden administration is coalescing around the argument and the idea that most americans will need Booster Shots. This is not going to come anytime soon in the coming days, so dont rush to your local pharmacy to get one, but they are reaching the idea that they believe that eight months after you received that first shot, most americans should receive a booster shot. Once it is fully authorized by the fda. This is coming, of course, as this White House is dealing with so much more, particularly overao overseas. There is a question always are they trying to change the subject. That does not appear to be the case at the moment. This essentially was reported by the New York Times and confirmed by cnn that officials simply have reached this conclusion. It must be recommended by the cdc. It must be recommended by the fda after these drugs are fully authorized. John, it would come in an order in which you first receive the shots. Health care workers will be first in line, seniors would be first in line. This would not come until likely midseptember. So this is something that certainly is a major development, it certainly would affect so many americans, but not coming at the moment. Likely next month at the beginning. Of course if the fda finally authorizes all these shots john. You say this will affect many americans. Were talking more than 150 Million americans who have been vaccinated at this point, most americans at this point who have already been vaccinate will get on this cycle where they may very well be receiving a third shot as soon as next month. So it is big news. Jeff zeleny at the White House, thank you very much. We should note the w. H. O. Has been opposed to this notion. The World Health Organization has been opposed to the notion of Booster Shots in developed countries like the u. S. Before people in many underdeveloped countries Around The World get their first shot. We are going to speak to the w. H. O. About this major development in just a moment. And now to the urgent situation that is unfolding in afgha afghanistan. President biden vowing devastating force against the taliban if fighters interrupt the evacuation of americans and its afghan allies. More u. S. Troops arriving overnight at the airport in kabul which has been the scene of desperation over a chaotic 24 hours. There is an extraordinary image that has emerged, and it appears to show hundreds of afghans packed into this u. S. Military Cargo Plane desperately attempting to flee kabul After The Fall of the capital to the taliban. The situation is said to be much calmer this morning. We have seen that on the ground with our Clarissa Ward, after u. S. Forces shot and killed two men who opened fire at the Kabul Airport during the rush of people to escape. Addressing the rapid fall of the afghan government, the president admitted that the collapse unfolded more quickly than he anticipated, but he stood firmly behind his decision to withdraw u. S. Troops. He promised to help afghan Allies Escape but left many unanswered questions about how the u. S. Can achieve that. Former president george w. Bush who brought the u. S. Into the war almost 20 years ago, said he and the former first Lady Laura Bush feel deep sadness over the events unfolding in afghanistan. Cnns Clarissa Ward who has been on the streets of kabul, our chief international correspondent, is there again this morning with more. Clarissa, give us a sense of what you are seeing today. You knows yesterday was the first day of the socalled new islamic emirate. Today is the second day. Whats the difference . Reporter the taliban came out Yesterday Afternoon and basically told all Government Workers that they could return to their post today. So for the first time We Saw Traffic Policemen out on the streets. We saw markets as you saw, we did the last live shot with you in a crowded market. Theres a sense that theres more activity on the streets, more shops that are now open, more Government Workers going back to their post because the taliban wants to show that it can govern. Its not just a fighting force, but that they can keep the lights on. This is how theyre doing it basically. Im just going to step out of the shot. You can maybe take a slightly closer look. These are taliban fighters just behind me. Theyre on an old humvee. Those humvees traditionally associated here with the mds, which is afghanistans equivalent of the cia. You could see theyre all quite keen to pose for the camera because theyre in pretty good spirits right now. They see themselves as being the victors in all this, and they see this as an opportunity for them to project a new image on The World stage. I will say in terms of the security situation, its having an impact. The Street S of kabul are largely calm. Thats partly because there are men like this on almost every other street corner, and its also partly because people are petrified. I have been getting Phone Calls all morning nonstop, people who work for the u. N. , people who work for the u. S. Military, translators, N Fgo workers Who E so desperately afraid now of what will happen next as the u. S. Completes this round of evacuations, with chaos at the airport, whats their opportunity . Whats their path out . What does their future look like . No answer to those questions at the moment. And what about, you know, after the u. S. Leaves . Because it is very interesting to see you today, to see you yesterday after the taliban came in, you were there on the street. We are seeing what is happening. You mentioned that you actually have more freedom as you are there today than before the taliban came in and was securing the area, but what do you think happens after the u. S. Is ouch afghanistan entirely . Well, that remains to be seen, right . Its easy in the first days to strike a diplomatic conciliatory tone. Its easy to make offers of blanket amnesty, but the question becomes in the longterm, do you stick by those promises, or do we see Retaliation Attacks . Do we see Revenge Attacks . Do we see fighters going and raiding peoples houses . The taliban has come out multiple times and said that it will not allow its fighters to go out and conduct those kinds of searches. But thats not doing that much to as assaage the fears, whose memories are associated with a short spell of disastrous governance and 20 years of hideous bloodshed in the form of an insurgency. The taliban Knee Pow that people frightened. Thats why theyre trying to project this image of being a more mature, pragmatic force, but of course that can only really be judged in the sort of mid to longterm. Right now its easy to say the right things, but in two weeks time, what will the situation look like . Thats a question that nobody right now can answer. You know, clarissa, whats going on behind you with the taliban standing on that u. S. Made humvee is a metaphor. I mean, for the situation right now. How much equipment, how much american equipment is around . Is it all in Taliban Hands at this moment . Its yeah, its all in Taliban Hands. You literally you drive around this city, john, endless hu humvees. American assault rifles, American On And on and on and on. I mean, there has been so much weaponry, ammunition, equipment, Hardware Plundered from these u. S. Bases that have been taken over from Afghan Forces in the course of the last months, weeks, and of course days, and the taliban is now in charge of all of that, and you can see from these images behind me, theyre very keen to show it off. Theyre enjoying this moment. They believe this is a victory from god, and they want The World to see it. Thats why for the moment, at least, theyre being quite open and cordial to western journalists because they understand this is their way to get these images out to The World and to get their message out to The World. I know that youve been talking to a number of afghans including Afghan Women, clarissa. What are they telling you . It depends where in the country, but here in kabul and in many other City Sicenters wherever you have educated women, wherever you have women who work, theyre petrified. Theyre petrified that they are on the precipice of losing everything that they have worked so hard for over the past two decades. I interviewed a woman this morning, an incredibly strong woman whos been working with a variety of international ngos for years now, for a decade, and shes now here petrified with her two daughters, has no idea what will happen next, how she will get out. Shes in complete hiding. Wont leave her house. Wont show her face. Thats how scared she is. Thats how desperate she is. Take a listen to what she told me. It is not easy for a person to work a lot with international organization having more than ten Years Experience of working with international and now not one of them help me. Just sending emails to different organizations that i work with you, but now no response. Are you angry . No, im not angry, but as a person that who worked with them now i need their support. It is not fair. You look very emotional as well. Yeah. Because im thinking about my future, my daughters. What will happen to them if they kill me. Two daughters without mother. Reporter and her story is a story of so many, as i said before, ive been inundated with calls and emails, people desperately looking for some kind of help, and the sense that i have from people other than the fear of the taliban potentially coming to their homes, raiding their homes, attacking them, arresting them, theres also this sense of paralyzed, what do you do . How do you plan far futor a fut when you Cant Plan the next two or three hours in advance . And i asked that woman, i said what do you tell your daughters right now . And she said I Cant tell them anything. I dont know what to tell them. Im so upset, i can barely speak to them. I have to give them to my mother to look after because I Cant look them in the eye and tell them that potentially their future has been taken away from them. Its devastating. How can they know what their future will be five minutes from now, let alone five days from now. Clarissa, again, these forces standing behind you, is this just preening, or are they actually guarding something . And whats their interaction with the people that weve seen out shopping on the streets, you know, do people just walk by them with their Milk And Nod their heads . Reporter pretty much, john, and thats the most surreal thing about it. Yesterday we saw people pose for photographs, take selfies, shake their hands, today, though, its almost like theyre starting to become part of the fabric of life, which is bizarre to even contemplate. Particularly for some older people in the city, theyve lived through the taliban before, and so while theres of course deep concerns primarily among younger people, theres also a sense of theyre a known commodity. Theyve been around afghan people in kabul have seen them in a Governing Position for years, albeit, 20 years ago, and so yes, when we were in the market and we saw some talibs going up and down patrolling, people didnt really look up much. They didnt really pay much mind. I asked the man who owned the burka store, i said are you frightened when the taliban are coming here to patrol, not really because theyre not giving us any trouble for now. And this becomes, again, this question of for now the Mood Timood is relatively relaxed. Its relatively cordial. Yes, theyre preening. Theyre showing off. They want The World to pay attention to them in this moment where they have emerged as victors but how long does that spell of goodwill last . How long before we seen the old creeping trends by which weve come to know and understand the taliban returning. That Question Nobody can answer. Clarissa ward, thank you so much for that report and all of your reporting this morning. Well be checking back in with you at the top of the hour, live for us from kabul. And my next guest joined the army after september 11th, served in afghanistan as a military Intelligence Officer and rose to the rank of captain, and he also served as Missouris Secretary of state before deciding to run for mayor of kansas city, but then making headlines when he suddenly dropped out of the Race Revealing that hed been suffering from posttraumatic stress and that he would be getting treatment for that. Today he serves as president of Veterans Community Project and is leading the organizations national Expansion And Jason candor is joining us now. Jason, thank you so much for being with us, and you know, lets talk about this because i think this is one of the big stories right now of what were seeing happening in afghanistan, and that is how veterans of this war are experiencing this. Yeah, you know, im probably not the first guest to come on here whos an after began vet in the afghan vet in the last few days and say that its a mix of anger and sadness, but i think also you renksed Post Traum Tick stress. One of the big pieces of posttraumatic stress is a desire to exert control over every situation, over every emotion. We learn when were in a Combat Zone that if we can exert control over the situation, then we survive. And that instinct works for us there. You come home and your body and your brain want to exert control, and so to see whats happening in afghanistan and to have no control over it is very difficult and thats why ive tried to spend the last couple of days doing the only thing i can control, which is checking in on my battle buddies. People that i was there with, and just having those conversations and so thats what ive told my fellow afghan veterans to do. I know there are so many veterans who are concerned right now for the afghans that they served with, and they feel very helpless. I mean, you mentioned having control. They really cant do much, but theyre trying. Theyre trying to get lists of at risk afghans together. Theyre trying to see what ngos and the u. S. Government can do. With the way this has been carried out, i know you didnt agree with every word that the president said yesterday, you said you also found his words reassuring. Is there a moral injury to not the war writ large but this exit in particular . Yeah, i mean, you know, its interesting for the longest time i felt like a buddy of mine said to me not long ago, he said, you know, obviously the Vietnam Veterans and others had it really bad too, but at least their wars ended. And so for a long time i thought about the fact that there was injury in the fact that you came home and maybe like me you came home, you left the service after a while and then the war didnt end end, and theres a part of you that felt like what am i doing here . I should be there. What i never really anticipated, ent even though i knew it would end with kabul falling, i knew that ten years ago at least, theres a part of me that never anticipated just how injurious this would actually be. Ive thought a lot about the friends i made in afghanistan, the people that i worked with, and i actually dont even know if theyve lived this long. Id say probably half of them may have, but now im worried about those who have, and im worried about their families, too. And theres a tremendous guilt that goes with it, you know. I mean, im coaching a little league game tonight, and i think about the people who i worked with in afghan government and the Afghan Military who theyre probably staying in their houses because, you know, look, right now the taliban is putting on a good show for the rest of The World, because they want all of us to be talking about whether its a kinder, gentler new taliban, but as soon as the cameras are gone theyre going to be the taliban. That is to say the only way theyre going to keep any sort of uprising from happening in the country is to be as brutal and horrific and evil as theyve always been. And thats the reality. Thats whats going to happen. And that is whats hitting so many veterans. You know, jason from my Military Family to yours, i just want to say thank you. Youve been doing so much to reach out to veterans to try to help them through this and counsel them and make sure they have the resources they need, and i know that i certainly appreciate it. Jason kander, thank you. Thanks. Next, the Pentagons Press Secretary joins us live as President Biden defends the administrations actions. And dr. Sanjay gupta with us live to answer your questions on the news that the biden administration will recommend Booster Shots for almost all americans starting as soon as next month. Troops from afghanistan after the countrys total collapse to the taliban, and he is blaming the former afghan leadership and military. I always promised the american people i would be straight with you. The truth is this did unfold more quickly than we had anticipated. So whats happened . Afghanistan political leaders gave up and fled the country. The Afghan Military collapsed. American troops cannot and should not be fighting in a war and dying in a war that Afghan Forces are not willing to fight for themselves. Were joined now by the pentagon Press Secretary john kirby. Very nice to see you. Can you give us the latest from the airport in kabul . What is the situation now . Air operations have resumed at the airport there in kabul, john. Security is much better, although we are still working to make sure that that security can stay in a sustainable way over the course of today. Military flights are coming in and out. In fact, over the last 24 hours, weve been able to Flow In about A Thousand more troops bringing the total to roughly 3,500 as well as taking out about 7 to 800 individuals, 150 or more were american citizens just over the last 24 hours. Things back up and running. Were going to keep flowing forces in to make sure that we can ensure a safe and secure environment for operations at the airport. So 7 to 800 in the last 24 hours. How many people do you think you can get out a day . Once we get a full up and running there, john, which means after weve done the Force Flow in, all the troops are in, and then we can just keep running Military Craft in and out. Just on the Military Craft alone, we believe we can get between 5 and 9,000 people out per day. Thats weather dependent, obviously security dependent. We have the capacity to literally move thousands per day once we get everybody on the ground, all the Security Troops we need there and we can continue the flow of aircraft. Thats just the Military Side. We want the civilian side of the airport to remain open as well, so commercial flights can and are able to get themselves in and out as well as charter aircraft. Im talking about the Military Side we can move thousands per day. They can. Are any commercial or charter flights going in and out right now . I dont have a full picture exactly where we are this morning. Listen, you said you have the ability or will have the ability to move 5 to 9,000 out a day. If i can get some specifics here, how many americans do you believe to be in afghanistan right now . We think there are certainly thousands of americans. We dont have an exact count. I would say somewhere best guess between 5 and 10,000 that are near kabul. There was a message put out by the secretary of im sorry the State Department Today advising those americans about how to queue up and get to the airport so now that security is better they dont need to necessarily shelter had in place, and they can begin movement to the airport for processing for flights out. So americans can begin moving to the airport for processing for flights out. They can. What about afghan allies . How many at this point do you feel are eligible for this withdrawal . Are we talking about some 18,000 who is Siv Special Immigrant Visa applications are waiting . How high does that number go . I think thats the number, the Operative Number the State Department is dealing with right now, john. I can tell you from our perspective, were going to be able to make room at u. S. Installations here in the continental united states, three bases for up to 22,000 people in the next couple of weeks. If we have to go more, higher than that, well certainly do that because were not just talking about the special Immigrant Visa Applicants themselves, but also their families. Were committed to their families as well. 18,000 seems like a low number based on what we believe to be the need and the number of people and their families that helped the u. S. Over the years. I mean that number the Wall Street Journal gave a 50,000 number, but we could be talking about 100,000. I dont know, i dont have an exact picture of how big the population should be. We shouldnt get too fixated Object Special Immigrant Visa applications. Look, john, Bottom Line is we have an obligation to these people who helped us over the last 20 years. We want to do everything we can to help our colleagues at the State Department get these people to safety. The reason ive been asking about those numbers is just because of that. I want to understand how youre going to do that because there are only so many people at the airport right now. There arent 20,000 people at the airport right now. There arent 5 to 10,000 americans at the airport. Theyre at their homes in kabul or in the area. What is the plan to get these people to the airport . First of all, from a military perspective, our focus is at the airport. Security, stability at the airport so we can keep operations going. Were working hand in glove with the State Department in terms of supporting their plans at processing these individuals, but again, Thats Something that were going to be doing on a case by case, Day By day basis. Right now i dont want to set the expectation that we are equipped and able to go out into the countryside and physically move people into kabul. Our focus right now, the troops that we have there are at the airport. The idea is to make sure we can get the air operations, not only have they resumed, but to keep them in place for as long as possible. If they cant get to the airport, what cdoes It Matter you have the capability to get them out of the airport. Right now the airport is open and people are able to get through the gates there. Theres a Processing Process that actually has to occur. Right now things are moving out of the airport and again, our focus is on making sure that continues. President biden said yesterday as we carry out this departure, weve made it clear to the taliban if they attack our personnel or disrupt our operation, the u. S. Presence will be swift and the response will be swift and forceful. We will defend our people with devastating force if necessary. So thats a warning to the taliban that the u. S. Will use devastating force. When exactly . Can you explain what would trigger the devastating force . We have the right of selfdefense, john, and if were attacked by the taliban or by anybody else in our mission in afghanistan, were going to respond accordingly and appropriately, swiftly and as the president said forcefully. We have capabilities there at the airport to do that. We are flowing in additional capabilities to provide for the defense of the airport and for the operations there. Im not going to speculate or hypothesize about whatever any individual operation might be, but we certainly have the capabilities on hand, and were gaining more of those capabilities, more Combat Power over the coming couple of days. Again, you limited that to the airport. I guess what im asking is does that threat of devastating force extend to the taliban preventing u. S. Allies from getting to the airport or impeding the mission to get them to the airport . I will go so far as to say, john, that any attack on our people or on our operations at the airport will be met with a swift and forceful unambiguous response, and i think im just going to leave it at that. Americans . Im just going to leave no, not just for americansment on our operations at the airport. We are also helping move our allies and partners as well, seeing if we can help some of them get out of the country. Any attack on our people or our operations at the airport will be met with a response. What communication has the united states had with the taliban at this point to assure the safety of people getting to the airport or out . Speaking from a military perspective, general frank mckenzie, the central commander did meet in doha over the last several days over the weekend to not interfere with our operations at the airport, and the fact that we would respond accordingly. The message was unequivocally clear. I will tell you, john, that as you and i are speaking today, there hasnt been any attack by the taliban on these operations at the airport. We want to see that continue. Has there been any assurance from the taliban. I wont go into more detail in terms of the conversation. What i can tell you is the message was very clear and thus far we have seen no attack by the taliban. I know youve been watching as has The World, Clarissa Wards reporting from the streets of kabul right now, witnessing Daily Life for people in afghanistan and the capital city. She joins us now because i know she has a question for you. You bet. I just wanted to ask you because obviously im The One whos here on the ground talking to afghans every day who worked with the u. S. Military, who worked with the u. S. Embassy, who worked with american ngos or journalistic organizations. Im The One who has to look them in the eye. Can i offer them your assurance that everyone who has worked with american organizations will be got out of this country safely . Clarissa, first of all, thanks for your incredibly brave reporting and the images and the stories that youre telling. Were all grateful and we all know how hard and how dangerous that work is. I would ask you to tell them that there is a process that they can apply for through the State Department to get onto the list and get onto the manifest, and i would ask them to work with State Department authorities there in kabul to do that, and if they are through that process, i can assure them and you can assure them on our behalf that we in the pentagon will do everything we can to help e get them out of the country over the next couple of weeks. Thats why were flowing in extra troops to maintain security at that airport so that we can do that. I would also say over the last since 2005, weve moved 70,000 of these individuals. We know we have an obligation to them. Reporter to most afghan people that im talking to, john, thats going to sound like hollow promises. Can i have your word . These people are depending on you. They are depending on america. Their lives are at threat. They are given everything to work with america to rebuild this country, and now they are asking simply for an assurance that they will not be cast aside. They will not be abandoned, that america will step up and take responsibility for the lives that are in its care at the moment. Clarissa, theres nothing hollow about the obligation that we know we have to these afghan who is so bravely helped us over the last 20 years. Believe me nobody in the united states more than the pentagon understands that obligation to these individuals. We will do whatever we can to help them get out of the country in concert with our State Department colleagues. We are absolutely committed to that. Were going to stay and do it for as long as we possibly can, up until the end of the month, certainly thats when the mission ends, were going to continue to work on that very hard. Thats why were continuing to Flow In more forces, continuing to Flow In more aircraft. Reporter what about people whose paperwork has been turned town. This is something i hear every day. I applied for my siv, computer said no, i got a rejection. I dont know why. Whats the problem, i worked as a translator in kandahar for five years. What about those people . Are you going to retroactively go back and look at these applications again . Clarissa, I Cant speak to the process itself. That is not a process that the Defense Department owns. I know the State Department is very, very focused on this and working very hard to process these applications as fast as possible. The secretary of defense spoke with the Secretary Of State last night and they talked about this very thing. Secretary blinken and his team are working on this very, very hard. It has the attention of the top levels at the united states government. Nobody is just dancing around on this. We understand that time is a critical factor here. We understand that numbers are a critical factor here, and i can assure you were working on this as hard as we possibly can. John kirby, pentagon Press Secretary. Thank you your time. We do appreciate you being willing to speak to both of us on this, thank you very much. You bet. Clarissa, briana, i think we know a lot more about the limits of what the u. S. Is going to do now this morning. The threat of devastating force, the promise of Military Assistance seems to only extend to the borders of the airport at this point this morning, and that could be devastating for thousands, if not Tens Of Thousands of after beghans who o get out. How do they get to the airport . I wonder clarissa what do you tell them when they ask now with the answer you just got from the pentagon . Reporter i tell them theres no guarantee. There is no assurance. I tell them that i apologize and that i hope with all my heart that they get out, but it is entirely possible that we will have failed them. Thats what i tell them. Is that the takeaway to you, that afghan allies of america will be left behind in huge numbers . Reporter i mean, listen, we have to wait and see, right . You heard from admiral kirby. There is another however long it is, two weeks. They say theyre going to get Tens Of Thousands of people out. We remember from the iraq war, it was a similar situation. There was an absolute panic about getting translators out. And then it did start to move more freely. It did start to flow more freely. I do think that part of getting it to flow more freely and getting more people out is to keep these stories on the air, keep americans engaging with the fate of their allies here in afghanistan because the Minute America forgets, thats where it stops. And so i hope by continuing to tell these stories, we can somehow have a positive impact in terms of trying to get more people out of here who are facing real security threats. Clarissa ward, again , on th streets in kabul, we thank you so much for your reporting. Well come back to you in just a moment. Up next, a powerful image of that jampacked u. S. Health officials confirming to cnn that there are plans to call for a third shot, a third Pfizer Or Moderna shot for americans who have already received two Booster Shots beginning as soon as next month. Obviously third shots for the immunocompromised have been authorized already. This news will allow Health Care workers and older americans to begin receiving a third shot next month. Joining me is an infectious Disease Epidemiologist and the covid19 technical lead of the World Health Organizations Health Emergencies program. Thank you so much for being with us this morning. So the united states getting fully behind the idea of Booster Shots for most americans beginning as soon as next month, whats your view of that . So thanks, john, for having me back on the show. Listen, id be very interested to learn more about the plans for this. I do know about the Fdas Recommendation about the third dose for immunocompromised patients. What we are recommending at a global level i mean, this is a global pandemic and we need to think about global solutions. What our recommendation is is that all of The Worlds most vulnerable and those who are most at risk, Health Workers need to receive their first and second doses before large proportions of the population or all of the population in some countries receive that third dose. So the science is telling us that the vaccines are incredibly safe and effective at preventing severe disease and death, and so until the science tells us otherwise, our recommendation remains to make sure that those who are most at risk, older populations, those with underlying conditions, and critically our Health Workers in all countries arnold The World receive that first and second dose before we do the boosters for those that dont necessarily need it right now. To be blunt, if it is the recommendation or when they recommend third shots for most americans starting as soon as next month, this is not something that the w. H. O. Supports . Well, listen, its a global problem. We need a global solution. Its not only about one country. We have a limited amount of vaccine. Theres a limited amount of production. We need to use those doses that is epidemiologically sound, that is morally sound, that is economically sound, that is scientifically sound, and that really is focusing on those who are most at risk. We have a disease right now that is killing people, and it doesnt need to be killing people. So we have tools right now, this is a problem that has a solution, so we need to use those vaccines in the most appropriate way possible Around The World. You think this is against the science as you see it right now . Well, we were looking at the science as it unfolds. So again, id like to see what the plan is. Im just learning about it as you are seeing it on television now. We need to see what that plan is. There are possibilities and there are populations that may need that third dose. Were not against that. Of course we want people to be protected and to receive the full course, but what we are trying to mauve ove against is g a third dose to people who are wellprotected. Theres a way to ensure that those who need that third dose receive it, that third primary dose, but we are not saying that the mass population needs of that third dose. Ill say again its a global problem, and we need to make sure that people are safe. Caring for those who are at risk, who are hospitalized, we are in the context of a virus that is evolving. We have the Delta Variant now, which is much higher transmissibility, increased transmission means increased hospitalizations. That will put a burden on our Health Care system, and our Health Workers Around The World are not protected, they will be infected. This is something that is preventable. So again, you know, we are all in this together. And so were very grateful for the united states for Sharing Doses and were grateful for that to continue, but we need global solutions. I want to ask you, the Washington Post reported that w. H. O. Scientist dr. Peter Ben Embarak who initially had dismissed the Lab Leak Theory as extremely unlikely, he said he now considers the possibility a probable hypothesis . So what makes it now a probable hypothesis . So as you know, theres a lot more work that needs to be done to find the virus origins, the sarscov2 origins. The report that was issued by the international team in March 2021 outlined a number of recommended studies that need to go forward. Part of that is the Lab Hypothesis and looking at the potential that that was the way that the virus entered the human population, and there are a number of other hypotheses that need to be followed up. From our point of view, all of this remains open to further study, and we fully anticipate that this answer will be pursued in all of its forms, so we really need a lot more to be done. We need to depoliticize the study of the origins of the virus and make sure we get those next studies underway. Is it a more likely hypothesis now than it was a couple of months ago . No, i dont believe it is. The Science Hasnt changed in terms of our understanding of all of the available evidence. The most likely hiypothesis is that this is a coronavirus. Its likely that it came from a bat, but The Big Question is did it pass through an intermediary host before it infected humans. But of course we havent ruled out the Lab Hypothesis. So until we can rule that out, that hypothesis remains on the table. Thats what were saying, and so we have to pursue all of these hypotheses until some of them are ruled out, and then we can get back to the business of really understanding where this pandemic began, how this pandemic began so that we can prevent future pandemics from occurring. We appreciate you being with us this morning to cover this breaking news. Thank you. Thank you very much. So in just a few minutes, dr. Sanjay gupta will answer your questions about these Booster Shots. And just in, afghanistans first female mayor says she is waiting to be killed by the taliban. Every single day, were all getting a little bit better. Were better cooks. Better neighbors. Hi. Ive got this until you get back. Better parents. And better friends. No no thats why comcast works around the clock constantly improving americas largest gigspeed broadband network. And just doubled the capacity here. How do things look on your end . Perfect because were building a better network every single day. The talibans take over prompting fear for many Afghan Women and girls. They return to the harsh treatment they endured when the taliban last ruled in afghanistan 20 years ago. And joining me now to talk about that is the first woman to serve is afghanistans ambassador to the united states, roya romani. I want to thank you, ambassador, for coming in to be with us. You left your post a month ago, i think it was, is that correct . Yes. First, you have family in afghanistan. How concerned are you . What are you hearing from them . I am very concerned. I am extremely worried. What i am hearing from them is they are just waiting to get out. They are waiting for the opportunity that they would be called and told that there is a plane that would evacuate them. They havent so far. We are pleased to hear that they are alive, they are still alive, and they havent received direct threats in the past two days, but extremely concerned. And what happens if for some reason they do not get out . It seems very clear we just spoke with the pentagon. It seems very clear that there will be many afghan allies to america that cannot get out. Once the u. S. Is completely gone here in a couple weeks would be the latest, what happens perhaps to people could be your family and also women and girls in the country . Well, for sure there will be many women, there will be a lot of people in my country who need to get out that will not get out because there is millions of people who need to get out. And what happened to them is they will be distant to a very difficult and unknown fate. Who knows what happens to them. And im not even sure there would be reporters to tell you what is going to happen to them. What do you think of President Bidens comments last night . One of the things that i know stood out, im sure, to afghans is that he said America Cant want this more than the afghan people or Afghan Forces. And ive heard that echoed by some in the u. S. Military as well. Well, mixed feelings, number one. I understand if he says that, that would resonate with a lot of people. Yes, if afghans do not want it, why do americans fight for it . Its a logical thing to say. However, i have to say to all foreigners, the Afghan Forces were willing to fight. They wanted this. Afghan people did not want this to be their fate and destination. However, what the leadership did is a different question. President ghani. Yes, President Ghani and other elements of the government who left people in this mess. You know, as you are waiting to see, you know, what happens with your family and you see what is happening there at the airport, do you have a sense of how many people may be able to get out . And do you trust the taliban as they give assurances that for the people who wont get out, for the people who remain in kabul, that they are going to be, i guess, better than they were before, for lack of a better paraphrasing of what theyre saying . Well, how many will get out, i have no idea. We are both looking at the chaos thats happening at the airport. It is extremely disheartening. I wonder why it is and why they cannot pull it together. Honestly, i cannot understand that. But in terms of what happens after they leave, thats the scariest thing. Thats the scariest thing for my own family, that what will happen to them once everybody has pulled out as i said, you may not even get to know what happens to them next. Do i trust the taliban . Im not so sure. In the provinces they had very different action. They did what they did before. Also, this is a group that are only subscribing to a very specific and narrow world view, which is not the same thing that the afghan people can tolerate. They do not want to live under that, the kind of regime that they are told what to do. And for women and girls specifically, living under authoritarian regime that is completely in tolerant to the diversity of views and against International Human Rights Standards is dooming them to a very difficult and dark distance. Thats right. I do want to stay in touch with you. I know we are watching developments obviously in afghanistan, trying to figure out how many people will be rescued and we appreciate you coming into the studio this morning. Thank you for having me. John . So, a Life And Death situation in afghanistan for thousands of people. In washington that means one thing, the blame game. John avalon with a reality check. There have been folks on the left and right who wanted to see America Leave afghanistan after 20 years. They asked, whats the worst that could happen . We now know the answer. Of the taliban back in control of the country with its medieval morality. And the worst yet to come. Women and girls denied basic human rights. Horrific memories of Soccer Field executions, attempt to flee the country before its too late. All just days before the 20th anniversary of 9 11. Trips to Bagram Air base to support the afghan army, at least until the taliban complied with the terms of the Peace Deal could have avoided this at least for a time. Now, that is president Joe Bidens Road not traveled. He inherited americas longest war, but the implosion occurred on his watch. But dont even begin to believe the republican effort to Whitewash History and score partisan points over the fall of afghanistan. You know, like the Rncs Attempt to literally erase praise for trumps afghanistan Withdrawal Plan in the wake of this disaster. Trump drew down troops from 14,000 to some 2,500, while initiating u. S. Talks with the taliban in doha without the allied government even having a seat at the table. While former Trump Secretary of state Mike Pompeo was busy dunking on President Biden, he was hoping everyone would forget his own negotiations with the taliban and his commitment to have, quote, zero u. S. Forces in afghanistan by spring 2021. Thats right. Because last Year Trump was crowing about this Withdrawal Deal that was supposed to take place in may. We have very good conversation with leadership of the taliban. Were looking forward to getting it ended and i think we all have a common interest. The relationship is very good that i have with them. Do you get that . The relationship is very good that i have with the mullah. No one has a good relationship with the mullah. The Taal Bang are not trustworthy which is why the Trump Administration pressuring the afghan government to release 5,000 taliban prisoners including some who had been linked to the killing of u. S. Troops contributed to this dition astor. But one issue that united all members of congress was the moral obligation to protect afghan interpreters who risked their lives to aid our effort. Thats why there was a lopsided 41717 vote in the house to expand and accelerate their visas. Take a closer look at those 16 no votes. All republicans, including Charter Members of trumps sedition caucus, like Andy Biggs, boebert, goh saturday, marjorie taylor greene, scott perry. So dont buy the mock outrage over bidens botched withdrawal from this crew. Last month they werent even willing to offer assistance to the afghans who helped us. And arizonas Andy Biggs was
