This authorization from the fda for a third shot for severely immunocompromised folks . This authorization for an additional dose, many immunocompromised say this gives them peace of mind. It is great to be recognized. So they finally feel heard. And these are patients who may not have had an in the adequate immune response after receiving a first or second dose after receiving the Pfizer Or Moderna vaccine. So with the fda authorization, the fda said these people are eligible, solid organ recipients or those diagnosed with a equivalent level of immunocompromise. And they take immunosuppressive drugs to reject the new organ and those drugs could be the reason why some may not have an adequate response after a first and second dose. Now for the general population, erica, for everyone else, Health Officials say theyre still looking at data to determine if or when a Booster Shot might be necessary. So acting Fda Commissioner Dr. Janet wooddock said this overnight. She said, quote, Todays Action allows doctors to boost immunity in certain individuals who need extra protection from covid19. As weve previously states other individuals who are fully vaccinated are adequately protected and do not need an additional dose of Covid19 Vaccine at this time. So that is where we stand right now. But this is a moment for the immunocompromised population. Certainly is. Jacqueline howard, thank you. And turning to texas, Lena Hidalgo is the latest official in the state to defy republican Governor Greg abbotts order preventing local governments and schools from requiring masks. And this comes as texas is facing a devastating surge in covid19 hospitalizations, approaching the peak that the state saw during the 2020 holiday season. Lucy kafanov is in houston where they have set up over Flow Covid19 tents which is just a bad flash back to what we saw last year. Reporter absolutely, eric you. And devastating is exactly the right word. More than 10,000 texans hospitalized with covid. And reporting Zero Icu capacity. These are frightening numbers. Thing are so bad that the republican governor here Greg Abbott on monday requested all elective procedures to be halted at hospitals. Hes also directed the Texas Health Department to find additional medical staff from out of state to help cope with the surge. And at the same time, the governor is also making it illegal for local governments to pass public health measures like Mask Mandates and other measures that could actually help us see a decline in cases. Counties are fighting back as you pointed out. Harris county, including city of houston, issuing the Mask Mandate late on thursday evening. This is hours after the county filed a lawsuit against Governor Abbotts orders banning Mask Mandates. The judge wrote in her order there is, and i quote, there is an unwritten contract between parents and schools and that is when our children are under the care of the schools, they do everything they can to keep them safe. Now mask wearing is now mandatory in all four of texas largest counties and officials there try to prevent children who are too young to get vaccinated from getting sick under this more deadly Delta Covid surge. We also saw representative Sheila Jackson Lee writing to president biden yesterday asking for white House Intervention in the state of texas. She cited the Emergency Provision of nurses to states like louisiana, mississippi, and arizona, also led by republican governors and slammed Governor Abbott for not reaching out to the White House for assistance to his struggling state. Erica. With the latest for us there from houston. Turning now to mississippi where the state just hit a record high for covid hospitalizations. Nearly 1500 patients, the Health Department said more than 1300 are unvaccinated. Aid ye an broadus is in the Parking Garage at the university of mississippi medical center. It is beginning to take patients in this morning as well. What more are we seeing on the ground . Reporter well right now they continue to set up here and that Overflow Hospital is being set up to relief the strain from the Emergency Department behind me. I want to take you inside, but for now use your imagination. If you walk into the Ground Level of the Parking Garage here, where you would normally see cars parked, there are at least 20 beds. These beds are going to be used to treat low Acuity Covid19 patients. And for so of the staff here it is like Deja Vu and it is happening again. And there is a big plea from Health Officials for everyone to get the vaccine. Listen in. When youre seeing a Field Hospital and a planlor academic medical center, were pretty much on the at the collapse type system. Almost 8,000 Mississippians Have died have covid. How many have died from the vaccine . Zero. We havent verified a single death. Reporter as of yesterday, the Health Department here said that the state is averaging at least 4412 new cases every day. And as of now, the governor is also maintaining his position. He will not impose a Mask Mandate. At least 4,400 students are in quarantine and the governor here hoping that districts will make up their minds whether or not they want to allow masks in the classrooms. Back to you. With the latest for us from jackson, thank you. For more on what is happening there on the ground in mississippi, joining us is dr. Randy roth, chief medical officer at River Health System in mississippi. It is good to have you with us. Your Hospital System tweeted, our situation is indescribable. Noting the influx of patients that was pretty much preventible. What are you seeing this morning. Were shutting down elected procedures like Bypass Surgery and things people need and early Cancer Surgeries that we cant stap. The morale is low. Our staff is overworked and doing overtime to cover things. Were taking great care of patients still. But the surge is still rising and im not sure that well be able to meet the demands that were seeing in the future. Im going to let that sink in. The concern you wont be able to meet the demand. You bring up the Staffing Concerns as well. I spoke this week with the same River Health System that she just submitted her resignation because shes so exhausted. Shes an Icu Nurse and so burnt out. Here is the picture that she painted for us earlier this week. I work in a 12bed icu. All 12 patients are all covid and unvaccinated. We do not have a fully vaccinated people in the icu. And they are young. Were watching not grand parents this time around, parents. Parents with young children. We have a mother right now who has never held her newborn baby. To call us heroes, but not do what you can to protect yourself and to protect us, its just words. And words dont save lives. Actions save lives. Actions save lives. You have really made it a priority to reach out to the community, i know. To encourage more people to get vaccinated, to do their part. You wrote this month, choosing not to get vaccinated, which is everyones right, puts unvaccinated people at significantly increased risk. How much of an impact do you think your outreach is having . One person at a time. If i could save one life, if i could approach students or church groups, minority groups, and get in front of them and get them to believe in the vaccination, it is worth it. That nurse, i know her very well. The difference between the first wave and this wave is that were seeing 30 and 35yearold, 40yearold patients die. And when you talk about withdrawal of care and youre speaking to their brothers and sisters or their parents instead of dealing with an 80yearold that is kind of in that Circle Life where it is supposed to happen, it is a devastating from a spiritual and emotional standpoint, there is only so much our nurses and Front Line people could take. So it is about One Shot at a time. One vaccination at a time. Trust and please get vaccinated. Right now out of 140 inpatients, about 12 or 13 have completed their vaccination cycle. So it is not bulletproof but it sure is a good first step. You talk about the lasting impact. I could remember at the start of the pandemic here in new york city, talking with a cardiologist who had been repurposed back to the Emergency Room to help with the influx of patients of covid19. She talked about her very real concerns for the lingering ptsd that Front Line workers wouldnt start to experience for at least a year. But now were seeing, it sort of compounded. I mean, you just touched on that. But in terms of available resources, i mean, do the staff, are they even finding the time to take advantage of those resources to take care of themselves, to deal with what theyre seeing on a daily basis . Wed advocate for our employees. You have to take time for yourself. Whether it is physical exercise, going home to your family, taking some time. But we signed up for this. And i dont think that i can expect a lot of our nurses and doctors just to walk away. Theyre putting in extra hours and not only the sextra hours bt the intensity. Work is unbelievable. Ive never been in the service but i imagine it is consistent with what they see in the field and making decisions about life and death. The isolation of this disease, patients in the icu and our e. R. Unable to have family and visits putting an extra amount of stress on our staff to communicate over the phone to thur families and make decisions that are so hard to make. We do offer services to our employees and they do take advantage of it. We have certain rooms where they could go do to and rest. And right now it seems like they keep coming and were taking great care of them. Really quickly, the governor extends the States Emergency Order for 30 days but no more lockdowns or Mask Mandates. Would you like to see some Mask Mandates in place . Obviously the masking is controversial and it is political, it is very polarizing. But from my standpoint, having four adolescents in high school, im not sure what hes waiting for. These kids need to be in school. I think they learn better than being virtual. And i would advocate for a Mask Mandate until we see a decline. The number of cases that were seeing positive every day continues to go up. So we could do four things. We could mask, we could wash hands and socially distance and get vaccinated. I would advocate that we do all four of those. Dr. Randy roth, thank you for your time and everything that you and your staff are doing. Thank you. Still to come this morning, breaking news, four teachers in one School District all died of covid in a single day. Were live from Broward County, florida, with more on that story just ahead. Plus dramatic new developments in afghanistan. More cities falling to the taliban including the second largest kandahar. The pentagon now working to evacuate those still in the region. And the lawyer for Britney Spears after her father said he will stel down from the conservatorship. So what does this mean for her legal battle ahead . I became a Sofi Member because i needed to consolidate my credit card debt. I needed just one simple way to pay it all off. It was an easy decision to apply with sofi loans, just based on the Interest Rate and how much i would be saving. There was only one that stood out and one that actually made sense and that was sofi personal loans. It felt so freeing. Swifting taking command of at least 17 cities in the last week. Several of them major population centers. A number of other locations are surrounded or under siege and the u. S. Is now acting fast to get americans in the country out. 3,000 u. S. Troops on the way to kabul to help the drawdown at the u. S. Embassy. Nick Paton Walsh is joining me now from london. Every time i look at my email, were learning something else. It is staggering. I think no one thought it would be remotely possible. It shows the gap between what the u. S. Said it was doing and what appears to be the reality. I think to do justice to the afghan forces, theyve been Cut Off by road, unable to reach sup supplies by air and the key major cities in the last 24, 48 hours, Kandahar And Herat and the city of Lasha Garr have all fallen very quickly. Now were at 17 provincial capitals, when one seemed farfetched because everybody thought the taliban would stay out in the rural areas. Focus now on kabul. And while yesterday i think the debate was would there be a siege, could there be an encirclement, and when they r they going to advance. And now a lot of discussion about the negotiation to prevent some sort of awful situation in the Capitol Sit of 6 Million people. Now diplomacy has being pushed by the u. S. Very unsuccessfully for quite sometime now and they havent given up on it yet. So well very to see whether we get the idea that maybe as these 3,000 u. S. Marines turn up in Kabul Airport to provide a Security Bubble for diplomats to leave but it will have an impact on the capitol generally, one that you might see the taliban choosing to challenge. They managed to penetrate into kabul over the past decade. Once Laying Siege to Nato Hq where the americans were based for aafternoon. It would be messy in the next two to three weeks here. But diplomacy could capitalize on territorial gains. It is difficult to see where we really are. But the impact of the united states, yesterday saying they were sending in more troops into kabul to get their people out then they have to withdrawal as part of the military departure. I think that upset a lot of afghans i spoke to. It is going to be a very theatrical way to leave and wheel see what condition they leave kabul and the rest of afghanistan when that happens. Erica. Thank you. Joining me now, cnn military Analyst Lieutenant general mark hertling, the former commander for europe and the seventh army. You wrote a piece in april saying at the time that president biden made the right call. It was time to pull out of afghanistan. Do you still believe that and did you anticipate the situation deteriorating quite this quickly. I do still believe that, erica. It was time to pull and thought it would go. It certainly was much more intense. The taliban has become very brazen in the way that they are attacking the cities. Nick just brought it up. The thought was that they were going to stay more in the rural provinces and continue with their very successful insurgencies. But what weve seen is a much faster transition, almost from an insurgency to a near conventional type of fight where they are going into the cities because they have become more brazen, they have used psychological warfare and attempted to threaten and intimidate the Security Forces of afghanistan. So all of this went down much faster than anyone thought it would. You know, most afghan watchers predict that things were going to be bad. Some thought they were going to go faster than what the administration was saying. I was one of those. Even i didnt consider that it would happen as quickly as it has with the momentum that it has now. And there also were seeing reports that senior afghan government officials joined the taliban In Herat after they took control of the city. The taliban is claiming that thousands of afghan Security Forces have joined their ranks. Cnn has not been able to independently verify but has viewed video of one politician with the militant group. We look at the way that they are now surrounding kabul as well. At this point, when their controlling access and getting close to controlling the roads in and out of kabul, how soon before they really do control the country as a whole . Yeah, i cant see your picture if you showed one. But i think the politician youre talking about is is mail khan. Hes been fighting for afghanistan since hes 70 years old, before even the soviet invasion. What i suggest is, yes, this is very damning in terms of how the afghan government is controlling their forces in the provinces. You know there are 34 provinces in afghanistan. What we see now if we see the maps of the ones that the taliban have overcome, is a great deal of red or black in those provinces that are showing taliban controlled area. When you have kabul that is the capital of the country in the center of all that, it is like replacing washington, d. C. And having maryland, pennsylvania, virginia, west virginia, and the states surrounding that capital being held by insurgents. It is a similar situation. So even if the afghan government does hold the capital, it is going to be a very tough fight defending it and i think that is why we saw the admiral Kirbys Statement Yesterday on what what was going on with the help to get folks out. Appreciate your insight. Thank you. Thank you, erica. Up next, breaking news, four educators in Broward County, florida, have died from covid in a single day. We have a live report ahead. Out of florida. Four Broward County educators have died from covid 19 related complications according to the teachers union. Leyla santiago is in Fort Lauderdale with more for us. What more are we learning about these educators . Reporter well, were learning that it was three teachers, one Teaching Assistant who died between Monday Night and early wednesday morning. That coming from the president of the teachers union. And listen, School Hasnt even started yet. That begins next week here in Broward County. Broward county public schools reporting theyve had 138 employees that have already tested positive. Listen to what the chairman of the board just told cnn. There are a lot of people that have still not gotten a vaccination and it is becoming a deadly thing for them not to be vaccinated or it is becoming very challenging where people are getting covid and living with life long complications. We have not opened schools yet. So that is why the eight of us on our board are Adam Ant that we cannot have people in schools without masks. Because we are living in backlash of people dying with covid. Reporter and were still not sure exactly where these employees contracted the virus. That remains a big question here. But also want to point out, remember, Broward County is one of two counties in florida that sort of is going headtohead with governor Ron Desantis other whether to have Mask Mandates in school. Broward voted tuesday that they will have Mask Mandates in all public schools with no opt out. Something that goes against the governors executive order. And we expect them today to respond to the commissioner of education to a letter that he wrote them about an investigation for noncompliance. Leyla santiago with the latest for us. Thank you. On the other side of the country, Los Angeles County expanding the Health Order as the Delta Variant surging and will require vaccinations for all emt, paramedics and dental Office And Home health workers. After california became the first state to require all employees in Health Care be fully vaccinated against covid19. This week the l. A. City council will require proof of vaccination from anyone wanting to enter indoor public spaces. And joining us now, mishtchell feral. And that legislation would require eligible individuals to have had at least One Shot, at least one dose of the vaccine. Were talking about indoor public Spaces Lake restaurants, bars, Fitness And Tram centers. How is this hitting with the folks in l. A. County . So great to join you this morning. So far so good. I think that people have really had enough of the over getting a vaccine. The science and the data is crystal clear and growing stronger every day. If youre vaccinated against covid19, you are health are drastically better if you still contract the virus as opposed to the unvaccinated. So i think people are rallying around this and its high time that we make this requirement across the city. Youre seeing people rally around it. I imagine there have been some pushback as well. What are you hearing from folks who are opposed to the idea. Some pushback for sure. There is so much Disinformation Spread over since the pandemic began. And what im telling folks is take a look at the facts. Look at information that is coming out of medical journals and put away the twitter disinformation. This is real life. Take a look at the facts. And i think that more people are doing that and i believe that when local governments do things like what were about to do in los angeles, people get the message that it is probably time to stop debating on whether or not a vaccine is good for you. And just go and get vaccinated so that you could protect yourself and others and the general public. You said instead of Fighting Science we should be fighting the virus. I think there are a lot people who feel that way. But to your point there are people looking at different information. Misinformation. They think they have the facts. They dont. They have mistruths. So in terms of combatting that information and doing it at the local level, what is the messaging that youre finding is most effective . Real life examples. The statistics that are coming out. The fact that just a couple of days ago i spoke with a friend of mine who is a medical professional said that her nurse had to intubate a 4yearold here in Los Angeles County. Children in Los Angeles County are dying from covid and it could be prevented. So it is becoming very real. And the second thing i would say is for fpeople to look at historical context. We eradicated Polio And Smallpox and a outbreak limited to 12 people in total in 1947 with only two fatalities because within one month 6,350,000 new yorkers became vaccinated against smallpox and it ended the pandemic of smallpox and that was over 70 years ago. So take a look at our history and our tradition of believing that vaccinations work because they do. Mitchell feral. Thank you. Pleasure. Thank you. The Closing And Reopening of schoo schools, the abrupt switch to Hybrid Learning have had an impact on the education of children. In a recent study by Horis Man educators, teachers have seen Learning Loss in students over the past year. Experts say the pandemic has widened the gap between kids who are excelling and those struggle, joining me now sal khan. Owner of Khan Academy known for the Education Tools worldwide. It is great to have you here this morning. When we look at those numbers, 97 of teachers, educators saying they saw some form of Learning Loss over the last year, does that surprise you at all or is it about what you expected . Unfortunately it is about what we would expect. There is always Learning Loss, people talk about the Summer Slide or even three months of not being in school, kids dont learn and they atrophy. Prepandemic 70 of kids who show up at Community College have so much unfinished learning that they have to take prealgebra. And you add the Pandemic And Distance learning and 18 months and it is ironic to hear it from me who is the Poster Child for ni online. If i to pick the amazing technology and the teacher, i would pick the amazing in Person Teacher every time. And one of my neighbors is a schoolteacher for fifth and sixth grader and even in a middle class neighborhood, shes seeing 10 of the kids that fell off the radar during the past year, year and a half. It is even worse in neighborhoods where kids dont have suitable digital access. And what is scary is that now were going back to school somewhat normal, the Delta Variant is throwing a wrench in that. Were seeing huge numbers of kids in low income neighborhoods just not showing up. So this is a scary situation. It is a scary situation. Im glad you brought up the digital divide. As we look at the resources. This is a major focus when everybody had to abruptly shift to online learning. Now only did districts have to figure out how to make that happen and make sure at home kids have a device but a way to access the internet and get online. So in this infrastructure bill, we know that there is, i think 65 Billion set aside talking about high speed internet access. Fact that the pandemic has so exposed the digital divide in this country, do you think it is enough to make sure the money is applied where it is need and it does help these kids and their families so theyre not further left behind . Im hopeful. 65 Billion is a lot of money. If you just take that and straight divide it by the number of students in america on the the order of 1,000 a student. And that is and a lot of students do have digital access. But this is a huge issue. People are calling it the homework gap. Even prepandemic, to use something like Khan Academy, we have a free Tutoring Platform called schoolhouse. World and if there are 30 kids in room and one of them dont have access, you cant use these tools for homework or for Self Study or for whatever else. That is prepandemic. Now if there is a Silver Lining behind the pandemic, it is because it is this energy that there is now behind closing the digital divide, behind closing the homework gap, i think this order of magnitude, 65 Billion is the right order of magnitude to do it. So Im Hopeful in the next three to five years well have significantly closed that gap. Masks are so politicized as you know. They shouldnt be. So if were looking at this from an education standpoint, from a science standpoint, you said you would choose Inperson Learning every time for your kids. What is your message to people who have concerns about kids going back to school masked but still want them there full time. One thing were not good at is to Stack Rank all of the risks that we have in life. If the parents are vaccinated, if the teachers are vaccinated, if the school is taking reasonable precautions, students are wearing masks, my understanding, you teach statistics on Khan Academy, my wife is an endocrinologist, i Cant Pretend to be an eep deemy ollist, but the risks, if you are comparing to a Car Accident or being struck by lightning or the risks of the flu, which always kills unfortunately many people including young people every year, if you look at those risks relative to the Delta Variant risk if you take reasonable precautions for children, it is not as scary as it sometimes seems. So i think we have to do a better job after educating ourselves on the Stack Rank of risks in our life. Pro mask . Very pro mask. A lot of times kids are in schools and they wonder why do i have to know this this life. If you know stats, youll make better decisions and this includes on a society level. We make Policy Decisions based on irrational emotions and saying im more likely to be killed by a bookshelf and that happens than by x, y, and z. Sal khan, thank you for being with us. After months of Britney Spears moving to remove her father as conservator. The father now said he intends to step down. Spears attorney calling Jamie Spears announcement vindication. St Step Stephanie Hellom is live. What is the latest here, what changed . What changes is the new legal filing, the response from Jamie Spears and indicating that he does intend to step down as the conservator of his daughters estimated 60 Million estate. In the filing he goes on to say while he doesnt think there are grounds for him to be removed but a prolonged battle publicly with his daughter about this conservatorship is a good idea either. So that is whiy hes working on having a smooth transition to a new conservator for her estate. When he first took over this role 13 years ago or so, he said that britney was in crisis mentally and emotionally and there were predators around her and targeting her financial wealth as well. All of that is why he said hes done this. However, like you said, matthew rosen guard, the current attorney said this is vindication and there seems to be plenty of attacks in here which Jamie Spears sees as just making his case, he said that hes been get ago tacked over this time. But this is Vindication And Theyll continue to investigative all that Jaime Spears has done because they alleged that he earned millions of dollars during the conservatorship. They will continue to investigate. This Volunteer Step aside may be a huge win and one less fight. There is still more fighting to come, it sounds like sarah. It is. Because this doesnt end the conservatorship. When we talk about free britney, it is about freeing her from this oppressive scenario with her father being the conservator. But in order to terminate the conservatorship, he has to convince the court that she could now care for herself and her finances and it sounds like to me like stephanie said, perhaps the position that her attorney is taking is that Jamie Spears might be one of the predators. At some point he was profiting off of her tours and had a percentage deal. So there is a lot of investigation into potential criminal and civil exposure by her father and others as her lawyer indicated. Under california law, under the Welfare And Institution code .
