In mississippi. The hospitals are full from memphis to gulf port, natchez to meridian. Everything is full. Everything is full. The i. C. U. Crisis is getting more critical by the hour. Some states are at or they are near capacity. Only a few hundred beds are left in some of the largest states in the south, or in the case of mississippi you see there on your screen zero. Mississippi is now requesting help from the federal government as they are dealing with this crush of coronavirus patients. And a critical staffing shortage. Theres a Field Hospital thats now being set up in a Parking Lot that could be used to take Care Of older teenagers with coronavirus. Some schools in mississippi, Indiana And Georgia have already gone back to virtual learning because of growing case numbers. Many are now rethinking mask policies. West Virginia Republican Governor jim justice warns that if cases continue to climb, as they clearly are, masks may be required in schools there. More children are now hospitalized in texas than ever before, yet Republican Governor Greg Abbott filed a Petition Yesterday to keep School Officials in dallas from exercising their freedom to institute new Mask Requirements. And in florida, Republican Governor Ron Desantis has given the School System in Broward County until tomorrow to show how it is complying with his order not to institute Mask Requirements. Desantis is threatening to stop paying School Administrators who defy that. And joining me now is Interim Superintendent for Broward County public schools vici cart right. This is her first Tv Interview since the threat from governor desantis. Thank you for being with us. Explain again what exactly the Broward County public schools have decided to do. Absolutely. So, the School Board of the Broward County public schools made the critical decision this past tuesday and that we are requiring Face Masks or face coverings for all students as well as all visitors and adults coming to our School Campuses. So this is going to be inside of our School Campuses or any of the facilities, and we are also ensuring that we take into consideration any type of medical accommodation, or if there are accommodations that individualized Education And Team come up with or 0 section 504 team comes up with. So for exceptions to that rule, thats what were looking to. So this decision could cost you some or all of your paycheck. How do you feel about that . You know, my Core Value is students first. No amount of personal financial loss will cause me to go against this value. No amount of money can compare to a Persons Life or the impact that this virus may have on a person or their family. And our board, they made a decision based on what they believe is right for our local community, you know. They are elected to represent and make these tiepypes of decisions for our local school district. Local decisions such as this allow for responsiveness and the immediate needs for local and very real situations. It wasnt an easy decision for them to make, but i know at the heart of every one of our Board Members that they are making a decision that they feel is right to keep the Health And Safety of our students and our community. The florida governor Ron Desantis doesnt think the local School Board should have the freedom to make that decision. Why is that decision better made with you at the local level than in tallahassee . You know, florida is a large state, and we have a lot of geographical areas that are happening right now. And here within Broward County we have some very troubling statistics that are coming in. And these this is the type of information that our local School Board members have access to and were referring to when they were making their informed decision on tuesday during the Board Meeting. I was interested in Duval County which has taken a little different approach. Only 6 4 , i think its 4 if im reading the statistic right, of parents have opted out of the Mask Requirements that they have. So an overwhelming majority of parents and families want students to be wearing masks in the schools. Do you have a sense of what your parents and families and students want . Well, we do know this, that though we had speakers, the speakers that we had at our Board Meeting were divided, and we had a great majority of them actually coming in to support the board in making that recommendation and going with the decision in order to wear Face Masks. In addition to that, we have an overwhelming number of emails that our Board Members also received, again, with a vast majority of the emails saying, please, have our students and our staff and adults wear the Face Mask inside of the building. We recognize that this is one way and for us to help control the spread of covid19 and more particularly, the Delta Variant thats out there right now. And is any threat from the governor going to get you to change your mind . At this point in time, our board is staying with their decision. Again, because they are Making Decisions that they believe is in the best interest of our local community. They are elected to represent our local population in making these decisions for the school district, and that is their position as a board right now. Interim superintendent for Broward County public schools, vici cartwright, thank you for being with us this morning. Now to a California Man who was not only skeptical about the vaccine, he didnt believe that the coronavirus was even a real thing. That was until he got sick with it in early july. He recovered at home, and he went back to work until things took a turn for the worst. Hes 42 years old and he developed a rare neurological condition that put him in the hospital for nearly two weeks, and that could have left him paralyzed. And he is with us now. Saul torres along with D Dr. Yesenia ramos who treated him at u. C. Davis health. Saul, to you first. How are you feeling now compared to how you were feeling . Right now im better. Right now youre feeling better. And, dr. Ramos, you treated saul. What happened . Tell us about what his symptoms were like and what his prognosis is. Yeah, so, he came in after having already been diagnosed with covid, and he told us how slowly he started to have numbness on his feet and then weakness. And with the syndrome, people have weakness on their feet and it can do all the way up and affect their breathing. So for him, he was a 42yearold healthy man in construction, and then all of a sudden he couldnt walk any more. Saul, why did you say no to the vaccine before you got sick . Because i dont have too much need for i talked to my family and said i want to wait. I dont think so. Its not real. I wont get covid. I made the decision not to take the vaccine. Dr. Ramos, he thought it wasnt real, so why, then, would you get a vaccine . I mean, are you hearing that from a lot of patients that you talk to . Yeah. So, i have been hearing it a lot from people, including sometimes even my family members, some cousins. And right now my goal is just to educate them. A lot of them have misinformation and are getting from the wrong sources, so right now its trying to educate them and tell them that its safe and efficacy, the vaccine is great. Saul, what is your message now to people about the vaccine . Go to take it, you know. I got another chance for my life. And i would say its important to go. Ill stay here. I got another chance. Dont wait. You need to go to take it, the vaccine, because i have family and my family is happy right now because im stay here with them, my family. So dont wait. You need to go to take it. Take it. Its such good advice. If you need more information, talk to your doctor. Saul, we are so happy to be speaking to you. We are so happy that you got a second chance for yourself and your family as well. Saul torres anD Dr. Yesenia ramos, thanks to both of you. Thank you. Up next, the Mypillow Guy luring people to South Dakota promising proof the election was stolen from trump. Well ask people there how its going. Rudy giuliani, sidney powell, and mypillow c. E. O. Mike lindell are all being sued for billions of dollars in damages by Dominion Voting systems, which is the company that they falsely accused of election fraud. Lindell is continuing to push election lies, holding what he calls a cyber symposium this week in South Dakota where he promised to prove the election was stolen. Cnns Donie Osullivan is joining us now from sioux falls. Donie, did he prove those election lies . And i say that facetiously. Reporter he did not, brianna. Mike lindell, the pile owe guy, has become really one of the loudest proponents of the Big Lie. And for months he has been making very specific, but very serious claims that China Hacked Americas Voting Systems and flipped the election, stole it from trump. And he, for weeks, has been inviting the media, Cyber Experts here to South Dakota where he said he would show data that would prove these false claims, but we havent seen any such proof, any such data. And i want to show you, just to give you an example of the sort of carryon thats going on here. Take a look at this clip from yesterday of one of the speakers on the main stage. Ladies and gentlemen, im not a computer guy. I dont know what most of this stuff means, but ive been researching this election since november 3rd. But the cnns of the world, you guys need to stop reporting this and start fact checking it. Reporter yeah. So, always a Red Flag if at a cyber symposium, one of the main speakers is saying, im not a computer guy, but. There are some Cyber Experts here, and there are Cyber Experts we have been speaking to who came to try and check out this data, to see to either validate or to disprove lindells claims and they are very, very frustrated. Theyre telling us that they werent even presented any meaningful data at all to really get their claws into. And even people who came here with an open mind, even people who really sort of wanted to see the proof, to believe in the Big Lie that the election was stolen, even they are getting frustrated. Have a listen to this one gentleman we spoke to who is an attendee and is disappointed. I think the guy makes a wonderful pillow, but i wish some of this information would have been organized a little better. Reporter yeah, so, thats basically what were hearing from folks here. Even the biggest proponents, some people who really want to believe in lindells claims have not seen the evidence here. And, of course, this is a spectacle. Its easy in some ways to laugh at it, but this is very serious stuff. I mean, the guy does have a big platform. A lot of people we speak to around the country listen to him and hes making these claims that are seriously undermining american democracy. A lie is a lie. Turns out the lies are lies and always have been. Youre right, its easy to laugh. Brianna and i were laughing at the guy on the stage. Dont bring facts into this. We dont want the facts here. And also to say we are reporting it and fact checking it, both. Yeah. Its clear the facts are a problem for them. And not just on the Big Lie with the election, too, donie. Youve been talking to people about vaccinations. Reporter thats right, we met multiple people here over the past few days, asked them if theyre vaccinated, what their thoughts on the vaccination are. And pretty much everybody was telling us that they have not got vaccinated. Have a listen. Have you been vaccinated . No. Reporter why not . Not going to. Reporter any particular reason . God gave us natural immunity to everything. Why would you want to interfere . Reporter youre an older man than i am. Youre probably whats the government going to say is the Risk Category . Well, who come up with that . Reporter the scientists and the doctors. Who told them to say that . Reporter even though its the trump vaccine, the doctors, the scientists it aint a trump vaccine. He did it to please everybody that put the pressure on him. Reporter he got the shot himself. Who says he got the shot . He got fixed up. Reporter he got the shot. He got it in january, i think, before he left i dont think he got the shot. I think he got some stuff to make him better. Reporter and i think you can see there why trump has been reluctant to really push this vaccine even though he could take a lot of credit for it because he knows it could alienate a lot of his base. But, look, i think the main take away from all this, whether its on the election and these lies undermining american democracy, and these lies and Conspiracy Theories about the vaccine which is damaging peoples these lies which are damaging peoples health, we have a very serious situation here where people are infected by misinformation. Donie osullivan, i know you look forward to a series of Coronavirus Tests which youll No Doubt be having to take very, very soon. We appreciate you being with us this morning. As always, really revealing reporting. Reporter thanks, john. So, just ahead, why a new revelation from Senator Rand Paul is raising plenty of eyebrows. Overnight republican Senator Rand Paul revealed that his wife bought Up To 15,000 worth of stock in the company that makes the covid Drug Remdesivir just as the pandemic was taking hold in the u. S. Now, by law that should have been disclosed within 30 to 45 days. Senator paul reported it 16 months late. Joining us now is walter sc haschaub. How concerning is this, walter . This is very troubling. On the one hand, its not a very large purchase relative to Rand Pauls wealth, but this is a purchase of stocks that are potentially affected by the pandemic. And as a senator, he was receiving briefings on the magnitude of the pandemic at a time when the public was in the dark about it. A law was passed in 2012 called the Stock Act that required these disclosures within 30 to 45 days of a transaction, precisely for the reason of enabling the public to monitor for Insider Trading. The fact that he didnt disclose it and the investigations of other senators for possible Insider Trading related to covid didnt trigger him to disclose it is very troubling. If we can put up the statement from a spokesman for Rand Paul, he makes the point that Rand Pauls wife lost money on this investment. And also tries to explain, it seems like a mistake on the part of the senator, his staff in getting this filed. Does it matter, walter, that she didnt make money on this . No, it doesnt matter at all because he couldnt know at the time that she made the purchase that it wouldnt make money. And as for the error, thats clearly on him because they have an electronic filing system. If he signed the thing, it would have been submitted, but he must not have signed it. Again, the statement they claim that he completed the form, but didnt transmit it. Right. Checks in the mail. Right. This really isnt just a Rand Paul story. This is much larger. Members of congress are buying and selling stocks. The Stock Act of 2012 was intended to discourage this. Frankly, the disclosure was intended to be burdensome enough that people wouldnt want to trade stocks. We have had other members of congress come into question. Just about a month ago, Nancy Pelosis Husband made some news buying some Tech Stocks before the congress took up some issues related to that. So the real Bottom Line is that members of Congress Shouldnt be buying and trading stocks. And this is a problem of their own making. Look, he was a member of the committee that originated that act. He certainly knows what is at the heart of that act. Walter, really appreciate your perspective on this. Walter schaub, thank you. Thanks. Overnight another provincial capital fell to the taliban, the 10th in just the past week. The senior Administration Official familiar with one u. S. Intelligence assessment now says that the Capital Kabul could fall in the next 30 to 60 days. Joining us now is jack murphy. He is the author of Murphys Law my journey from army ranger, green beret. Thank you for being with us now. Thank you. It seems the administration is surprised by how quickly things have turned south, really bad in afghanistan. But should they have been so surprised once they announced the full departure by The End of august . No, not at all. I mean, this is something that they have been grappling with for years in afghanistan. Its to the point where i think if you asked any marine Corps Or Army private who served in afghanistan, they could have told you that this would have happened. So for this to come as a strategic surprise to the administration, i personally have a difficult time wrapping my mind around how thats even possible. Jack, i wonder i wonder what its like. I wonder what its like for you and all the servicemen and women who have served in afghanistan to watch what is going on, to see provincial capital after provincial capital fall. And i know it is on the mind of so many people is the names of people who died in those areas. Yes, my sense from the veterans who fought so hard over there in afghanistan is that theyre just heartbroken by this. You know, the thing with afghanistan is that it was a conflict that in the past they confronted as a unit, as a team, with their teammates in the service, in the military. But right now theyre out of the military and they are having to answer the question of afghanistan individually for themselves, ask themselves that question. What did it all mean . And i dont think were anywhere even close to being able to answer that question yet. Is there any way to change an outcome that at this point seems inevitable . Well, youd have to reverse course completely and essentially rein vvade afghanistan, go back to what we were doing to maintain the Status Quo in afghanistan. Clearly the administration was not comfortable with that. They decided to pull the plug. I think The American Public At Large was frustrated with afghanistan. And the decision was made, so now its a question of watching the country fall apart from afar. I hate to sound jaded, im sorry. Look, it makes sense why you are. You know, when we look at this map, and we see how much of the country has fallen now under taliban control, i think what a lot of people maybe dont realize is that those interpreters that are trying to get out, theyre trying to get from those Red Areas into kabul so that they can get out. And a lot of them wont, right . And it is a dangerous path. What do you think right now about the efforts of the u. S. Government to rescue those folks . I think we need to speed it up. I think we have an obligation to protect the people who protected us while we were over there quite frankly. And lets be honest with ourselves. I mean, this is going to turn into an unmitigated human rights disaster, the likes of which we havent seen in afghanistan since prior to 2001. I mean, we all remember the images of the taliban executing women in soccer stadiums. I mean, they have not changed their tune. They are the same organization they were 20 years ago. It really does seem to be happening before our very eyes. And to an extent, you know, the administration knew what was going to happen and is watching it happen and is accepting of it. And i know those seem like harsh words, but it is the political reality. Jack murphy, we appreciate you being with us. We appreciate your being blunt about this. Thank you. Com president bidens signature 1. 2 trillion Infrastructure Deal just passed the senate by an extraordinarily bipartisan margin. So does that mean that his strategy of reaching across the aisle criticized by many in his party as out of touch and naive, might actually be working . John avalon here with the Reality Check. In boxing terms it was a little like muhammad alis ropeadope. Weeks of Body Blows predicting the failure of bidens infrastructure plan. It was a naive dream that always seemed on the verge of collapse. But biden absorbed it all, leaning into the ropes, not overreacting to the outrage d dujure, playing the long game. The president walked away with 1. 2 trillion infrastructure plan, securing 19 republican votes in the senate. That kind of margin seemed impossible even a week ago. And so after years of promises that made infrastructure reach The National punch line, there are billions of dollars for roads and bridges, public transit, rural broadband, clean water and a clean energy electric grid as well as Electric Vehicle Charging Stations and climate change mitigation. This is a bfd to use his phrase after the affordable care act, passed along partisan lines 14 months into obamas presidency. In half that time, and with a far smaller margin in the house and senate, biden has secured a series of big spending legislative victories. First there was the 1. 9 trillion american Rescue Plan which included a massive expansion of the child tax credit. Then the senate passed a bipartisan bill to compete with china through 200 Billion in science technology, manufacturing and research. Yesterday senate democrats also passed the 3. 5 trillion Budget Resolution without gop support. Includes universal prek, free Twoyear Community College as well as investment in affordable housing to name a bit. There is still a lot of work to be done. The house needs to pass the Infrastructure And China bills. Plenty of urgent priorities remain stalled from Police Reform to election reform. Democrats will squabble over the details of Budget Reconciliation while Republicans Attack unprecedented spending, point towards rising signs of inflation. But for better or worse, big things are getting done and its important it to try to view that with a sense of perspective. Because even after a bitter election capped by an attempted insurrection with Razor Thin Marginbled together a good firs package, ultimately changed the trajectory of american politics. Biden is betting he can have a similar effect. In some ways its an update of Middle Class liberalism. After jfks assassination, with the super majority in congress, it is his glad handed legislative Ambition Biden might closely resemble according to historian of the lbj with his legislative accomplishments, Joe Biden has shown himself to be the most progressive president since lyndon johnson. Like Lbj Biden is a creature of the senate. Success is due in large part to influence behind the scenes, rallying and pressing former colleagues on both sides of the aisle to come together. President Ial Style aside, there is a final real dollars and cents comparison. If as projected Bidens Infrastructure Spending equals 2. 5 of gdp, that would approach levels of Infrastructure Investment we havent seen as a country since the new deal. So, yeah, thats a big fing deal and thats your Reality Check. That is a quote, a throwback there, homage to biden, of course. John, i want to get your thoughts on what we heard from our colleague Donie Osullivans report where he went to the Mypillow Guy conference. And a speaker told cnn, said that cnn should just report their lies and not fact check them. I mean, that was just like chefs kiss perfect. Why dont you just start reporting what were saying rather than fact checking it . Oh, the frustration of having to actually have your lies be fact checked. Star Kevin Costner will be there along with the actor who shared this iconic scene with him back in 1989. Hey, dad . You want to have catch . Id like that. Does that seen still gets me. I know theres some dust in my eye. Joining us now from the site of Tonights Game is Dwyer Brown who you will recognize there from that scene. He played Kevin Costners father. Hes also the author of if you build it which is, of course, an homage to Field Of Dreams. It is wonderful to see you. What do you think about, like lets just talk first about the film. 32 years later, and it is still so iconic. Yeah, i cant believe it. You know, especially with the role thats five minutes in the film. I just cant believe that theres a major League Baseball Game happening here, and that im talking to you about this movie that we shot 33 years ago here in iowa. In a way, its not a surprise to you, right . Because you go around the country and like every third human you meet says to you, do you want to have a catch . Dad, do you want to have a catch . And you oblige. You know, how many people have you had a catch with over the last few decades . Well, i think i lost count at a couple thousand. But, you know, to me its kind of an honor, you know. My father died 30 days before we went to go shoot that film, you know, unexpectedly. So i feel like its my way of connecting with my father, is by having catch with other people who either lost their father or miss their father. So to me its kind of, you know, its just a little penance i do for being lucky enough to be in that film. Look, i know you say you were only in it there for a few minutes, but these are its the culmination, right . These are the most important minutes of the film. And i think one of the things thats so fascinating that i learned about Field Of Dreams is that it almost didnt happen, right, the movie, the release . Yeah, yeah, there was a lot of things that happened. I mean, the script bounced around hollywood for ten years before somebody finally green lit it. And then when the movie was finished, universal was not too taken with it. They were going to release it straight to video. As it turned out, a young Steven Spielberg Snuck into a screening of it and, you know, much to phil alden robinsons dismay. He convinced lou to give it a chance. Universal put it in four theaters across the country which shows you their enthusiasm for it. The trick was that people saw it and they said, hey, look, i cant tell you anything about this movie without ruining it, but you have to go see it. And pretty soon it was in 30 theaters, and then ended up in 1800 theaters and ran for a year and a half. You know, even at that, Rolling Stone called it the worst movie of 1989. Its not exactly a pedigree that we started out with. Well, it is amazing. It is amazing to preview this game. How much fun is this . And it is wonderful to speak with you, Dwyer Brown. At usaa, weve been called too exclusive. Because we were created for officers. But as weve evolved with the military, weve grown to serve all whove honorably served. Are we still exclusive . Absolutely. And thats exactly why you should join. All right, were celebrating the History Of The Sitcom with an allnew original series and we have another special Mystery Guest this morning from one of johns favorite shows. I mean, its really everyones favorite show, one of their favorite shows, i think. He has no idea who it is. Lets get straight to the clues to see if he can guess. All right, this character, berman, is the smartest in their family and grade, but cannot move past the second grade. Lisa simpson. Are you kidding . Hi, yardly smith. Voice of Lisa Simpson. More times for us to ask you questions. Well, theres only one person who hasnt moved past the second grade. Thats a question i know the answer to. Its ream i nice to meet you. Thank you so much for having me. That was really good, john. Really, really good. Look, not as good as having a steady job for like 32 straight years. Its the best job in the world. When you signed up for this, did you think it was just a few weeks or what . No. I mean, when we started on the tracey alman show, you want to do what . You want to do these little tiny interstitial bumpers on a Sketch Comedy Show . All right, whatever. And then we went to half hour. And much like dwyer was saying about field of Dreams Everybody thought simpsons would tank half hour. The thought around town was you cant put a cartoon on at primetime. It hasnt been done since the flintstones. You have to be crazy. A friend showed us the vhs tapes. We became addicted sort of then. The reason i was able to guess your character so quickly is because i think Lisa Simpson is not unlike Hermine Granger in our dramatic lexicon who is the real hero of the show. I mean, i think lisa is a truly heroic and in some ways misunderstood character. I completely agree. I think shes less misunderstood now. I think that i have so many people come Up To me saying, oh, my god, she is such a Touch Stone to me. She got me through a hard time. She made me feel like its okay to be myself. But shes definitely per ppetuay misunderstood by her family. She does stand out there as the middle child, right . She kind of has that persona. I wonder when you look back on this, how much input were you able to have in the Story Line . You know, its not a situation where theyre like, hey, yardly, come on into the Writers Room and lets pitch some shows. But i will say i feel so deeply emotionally connected to Lisa Simpson. Really feel like shes a living, breathing three dimensional red blooded girl like we are red blooded human beings, that im fiercely protective of her. So if they if something bad happens to Lisa Simpson and she has no recourse, she doesnt somehow come out as the victor, then i have to stand up for her. I might not win that fight, but i have to fight the fight. And it rarely happens. It really rarely happens. But i feel like its part of my obligation as a person, as a person who loves this little person. Look, im sure that it rarely happens because lisa is always right. I mean, Lisa Simpson is allegation right. Thats what i mean by the Hermine Granger thing. Shes the actual hero of this even if we dont acknowledge it. What else are you working on these days .
