Senate republicans did block an attempt by democrats to advance voting Rights Legislation they say is critical to counter efforts by states to restrict voting access. Ted cruz called it a democratic Power Grab and federal takeover elections. Look, the important thing to take away from this is when you take the bipartisan Infrastructure Deal, 1 Trillion deal that passed with a bipartisan vote, Mitch Mcconnell and Elizabeth Warren on the same side, that would be epic legislative achievement for Joe Biden whether you agree or not, it would be super significant. The bipartisan deal in and of itself also significant because it signifies that Joe Bidens idea of how politics can work shows a glimmer of hope for that. Combined like you said when you talk to critics or pro proponents of this they agree this is big, very big. Well speak live with the White House in just a few moments about what this all means and where it goes from here. Now, the battle over masks and public safety is coming to a head in courts. Overnight a judge granted a temporary Restraining Order in dallas and this would allow could allow County Leaders to override the governor, greg abbott, and order their own Mask Mandates in schools in government buildings. Harris county, the largest county in the state, plans to file a lawsuit against the governor over his executive order. And in florida, local School Districts are enforcing Mask Rules for students despite threats from governor Ron Desantis to with hold paychecks. The School Superintendent in Broward County already received a Noncompliance Letter from the state education commissioner. And this comes really to this, a governor blocking local leaders from exercising local control based on conditions on the ground for them. It happened the same day that Republican Congresswoman Marjorie Taylor Greene got kicked off twitter for a second time. I dont remember what Number Offense this was for her. Meanwhile, there is an interesting trend taking place among some prominent antivaxxers. A change in perspective once they get sick. John avlon with the reality check. We tell ourselves stories in order to live. So goes a famous quote by joan. But what happens when the stories we tell ourselves start to kill us . Thats one of the most surreals a pecks of this selfinflicted stage of the pandemic. Where Vaccine Disinformation is literally killing some of the its most vocal propoe innents. Dick called dr. Anthony fauci a lying freak. He opined that vaccines were promoted by people who lied all along about masks the Death Toll and where the virus came. He changed his mind only when he was on his deathbed. Friends says he texted her to get the vaccine because this virus aint no joke. Then saying he wished he had gotten it. Sadly it was too late. He endorsed Mask Burnings on Social Media and replied to a post by dr. Wen about the effectiveness of the vaccine against variants by tweeting you are an absolute enemy of a free people. He died last week of covid. His family put up a Go Fund me to pay for his funeral expenses. And these are just two examples from the past ten days. Lesser known True Believers like 34yearold Steve Harmon proudly posting about his refusal to get the vaccine from the hospital and died days later. The antimaskers and antivaxxers recognized reality only when covid came calling for them and even then its sometimes not must have. The author Michael Lewis did reporting from florida and found that one of the local protesters watched his Mother Die of covid. In that moment a political opinion was challenged by a fact. One of them needed to be altered. The man called the coroner and demanded that the county change the cause of death. Talking with Andrew Sullivan on a recent podcast, lewis tried to explain what leads to such extremes. Partly the power of narrative he said, once you start telling yourself a story about the way the world is, its much easier to shape the facts to the narrative than change the narrative. Its the power of us against them. In a world where people are starved for a sense of belonging. Where politics has taken the place of religion for some folks, admitting you have been wrong or taken for a ride seems like a threat to your very identity. And faced with that choice, some people are literally dying to own the libs. This is rooted in disinformation, amplified via Social Media but in a free society, what can we do about these bad decisions that end up impacting other people beyond the fact that Vaccine Mandates are clearly constitutional . Well, Andrew Sullivan argued in a recent column that the correct Public Policy is to let rising deaths concentrate the minds of the rekal se trent. Thats a pretty solid record of doing just that, he wrote. But this may seem cold. But it may also be that the lasting regrets of the unvaccinated are what fellow travelers need to hear. Rising Vaccine Rates in Red States are evidence that the vaccine hesitant are getting the message and rationally responding to the very real threat. But for many, it will be too late. Lets bring in our cnn senior Media Reporter Oliver Darcy into this discussion. How impactful is it, oliver . I think its extremely impactful. Unfortunately you have people who are not telling the truth to their audiences about what the vaccine does and its safe and effective and we say that everyday on cnn but unfortunately were not reaching the right people the people that need to be reached are viewers of Fox News, theyre fans and subscribers to these antivax channels on youtube or groups on Facebook Or Reddit or wherever it may be and theyre not getting these facts. Theyre getting a totally different World View in which vaccines are killing people, which theyre not, but theyre being told this. And theyre not effective. Theyre being told that as well which is not true. But this is what this is the universe which these people live and its difficult for us to get the facts to them. It just seems like they actually, in fact, some cases dont want it. Like john was saying, the narrative is so powerful theyre shaping their reality around the narrative versus allowing reality to shape their own narrative. What are these outlets whether it be google with youtube or Facebook Or Twitter or fox and you can go down the list, are they doing enough to get the right information out and to keep the lies from being spread . So this is a somewhat complicated issue, right, because at least Social Media platforms, their intention is to get rid of this misinformation from the platforms. They really have no interest in having antivaxxers spread poison using their websites. The difference, though, is with fox, you know, its a simple issue. Rupert murdoch could call up Tucker Carlson and say knock it off, you dont have a job. And he would be off the air. You have hosts intentionally spreading Misinformation And Disinformation about vaccines where as on Social Media platforms its a little more complicated. They are trying to do something about it. Its just in many cases not enough. I was watching yesterday i saw On Fox there was a story that was casting doubt or was really asking if masks negatively impact kids in schools. Look, no one wants to wear a mask. Its not fun. Thats not why we do it. I thought, you know what really negatively impact kids is especially if theyre in a place where theyre not wearing a mask, they may have a parent who is unvaccinated what would negatively impact them, they were sick, they possibly died or more likely their parent dies. Yes. And as a mexican restaurant near my house has a sign outside that says if you dont like a mask youre going to really hate the ventilator. These are the steaks. Thats the problem with this. Its not that anyone likes masks. Its not that anyone likes any of these measures. But they are necessary. If we want to stop the spread of this virus. This is basic civics 101. Youre right to swing your fist ends at someone elses nose. And the problem is i think oliver pointed out in all his reporting is the hypocrisy of these organizations but also the profit mode. Right . Theres maybe wellintentioned gestures, there may be wellintentioned Press Releases but at The End of the day, as long as these Social Media algorithms reward engagement, theyre going to push people further and further down Rabbit Holes and views that would be isolated in the past, they would have been isolated by their absurdity, instead creates an ecosystem and thats what were dealing with today. John, oliver, thank you so much. A Florida Church right now is grappling with the devastating consequences of being unvaccinated. In just two weeks six members of the Impact Church died from covid19. Four of them were under the age of 35, all of them were previously healthy, all were unvaccinated and every county in florida has seen a high level of transmission. Devalue county, jacksonville is located, 1,100 people are in the hospital right now and they only have a handful of icu beds still available there. Lets talk with the Senior Pastor at Impact Church, george davis. Pastor, thank you so much for being with us. I am so sorry for the circumstances under which we are talking. And i cant even imagine how your congregation is struggling. How are they doing . How you doing . Im doing well. Its a difficult time. But this is what we do as pastors. We do our best to take care of those who are part of our congregations and thats what were doing at this time. Its been very difficult for our church. Our church has supported vaccinations. We supported to wear masks in our church services. Were socially distanced. Every one of the cdc protocols we follow to a t. So its very difficult to see us come to a place where we are now where we did a Vaccination Event back in march and did our best to get as many people vaccinated as possible, almost 1,000 people registered, 800 actually showed up and were vaccinated. So weve been pushing, trying to help people stay safe for the entire time. So the folks that you have lost, can you talk a little bit about the Vaccine Hesitancy that you have heard from your congregants . What do they say when they explain why theyre not getting the shot . Theres a myriad of reasons. Were still a predominantly africanamerican church, 70 to 75 africanamerican, other 25 to 30 are other. And in the africanamerican community, this is something that sometimes gets overlooked, there is legitimate historical reasons why people are initially hesitant. Some of the things that have happened medically, going back to tuskegee, experiment and things of that nature and my own grandMother Died of Infa Zee Ma because she didnt want to go to the the hospital over 30 years ago. Because of some things that have been intrinsically part of the africanamerican experience, i think theres natural hesitancy. What complicates it and makes it worse is when theres all this misinformation. I think the Misinformation Kind of fuels a narrative that already exists in our community. So, im not one of those that just says just get the dog gone Shot And Move on. I do recognize that there is legitimate Hesitancy And Part of my role and i think the role of other Community Leaders and religious leaders is to try to share proper information and to try to be a trusted source. A lot of people will trust their pastor and trust their religious leaders, more so they would a Community Health Site of that nature even when we did our Vaccination Event back in march, we purchased a building used to be a Department Store so were in an existing mall. And right down probably 300 yards from our front door the Government Institution had a Vaccination Site set up, but a lot of people in the Community Werent going there. We argued or put the case to the duh Value County Health department, you allow us to do an event, i promise people will come here that wont go 300 yards down the way. It turned out to be true. Yeah. There is legitimate hesitancy but now is fueled by a lot of this misinformation. Youre so right on, pastor. We heard from a number of people who were vaccine hesitant and then they got the shot and they said, you know, more than a few of them have told us they prayed on it, they listened at their church. It was hugely influential. You are organizing a Vaccination Drive after sundays service. There was one young man who got his first dose this past sunday. This is what he and his father said about it. I didnt want to get vaccinated in the beginning because, like, it wasnt a threat to me in the beginning. I wanted to have a plan. I wanted to do something to protect him as much as i could. What do you say to that, and how do you move through as you put it this misinformation to breakthrough on Vaccine Hesitancy . Im thrilled to hear that. You know, the first event that we did was on a saturday. The one we did this past weekend, we moved it to a sunday. Right after all three of our sunday services, if someone wanted, there was no pressure, but if someone wanted they could go over and be vaccinated. We had people from Uf Health there to give information, actual medical information to answer questions. And we had almost 300 i think 269 people vaccinated and 35 of those were teenagers. So, there were a lot of people whose story was similar to this family, i want my child to be protected. Theyre heading back to school this week. And i just want to know that ive done my part. And by giving proper information and not putting people under the microscope and make them feel bad if they hadnt got vaccinated were seeing the Needle Move in the right direction i think i may have been overly anxious or gotten bad information and im going to let down my guard and get the shot. We were in kandahar, afghanistans second largest city, we recently returned from gazny completely surrounded by the taliban. Theres a very real, palpable fear here In Kabul that things are unraveling at an alarming rate. So it sounds like its more in danger now. Reporter so, i mean, here is what i would say. For the moment the capital is secure more or less. And there have been clear instances, such as the first night i got here, Massive Explosion nearby targeting the defense minister. He wasnt killed. But still, the taliban making the point, we can strike and we can strike when ever we want. I will say that moving in and out of the capital the last couple of days there isnt a huge amount of security in terms of check points. For those people who might be trying to get into the capital. I would also say we have seen afghan forces again and again deserting their bases pretty quickly when the going gets tough. Thats for a number of reasons. Thats because theres low moral and see the writing on the wall, thats because understandably many of them dont want to die. Thats not a problem the taliban suffers from. The taliban are ready to die. Many want to die. It feeds into their entire ideology which makes it a very complex enemy for afghan forces to confront as we are seeing now. The taliban is in the midst of a Winning Streak at this point. What does that do to whatever exists in the Peace Talks . Reporter right. U. S. Represents are trying to get the Peace Talks going again, but from what were hearing its very difficult to pull that off because simply put as you mentioned, john, the taliban is on a Winning Streak. They have the leverage. They hold the cards. And theyre not interested in Making Concessions right now. They think they can win this thing. Theyre convinced of it. Not only that, they feel very aggrieved that theyre being blamed for all the violence and bloodshed. Theyre very upset about u. S. Air strikes. Afghan air strikes. Theyre claiming they are responsible for many of the civilian casualties. And so you have to ask yourself, how on earth do you get these two sides to sit down and hammer out some kind of a Power Sharing Agreement when one side at this stage really doesnt think it needs to be sharing power with anyone. You got a massive investment in making sure that we can have broadband everywhere. That will help kentucky. It will the help the states of the other 19 republicans who joined. They see this and americans see this as a huge benefit for investing in the bones of our country. So, its a big deal. If it is such a big deal and will do all those things, why not ask Nancy Pelosi to have the house pass it this afternoon . Why wait on something else to happen to have this become law . Yeah. The president is committed to both pieces of his agenda, so this bipartisan Infrastructure Plan was one piece and the second piece is going to be the Followon Bill that was the Budget Resolution was passed late last night or early this morning. And the president is going to be pushing for both. Obviously the congress is going to figure out what the order and the sequence is and the president respects that. Nancy pelosi certainly knows what she is doing. So, it is a big deal. I think were going to have support for this in the house. Its the first step. Its got to be passed by the house. That is going to happen. And hopefully the second piece happens as well. You keep saying hopefully. Is the bipartisan Infrastructure Deal a big enough deal on its own without the 3. 5 trillion Budget Plan . It is a huge deal. Theres no question about it. But the president has a build back better agenda which includes both pieces and hes going to be pushing for both pieces. How involved are you in possible conversations with the likes of Joe Manchin and Kyrsten Sinema and youre going to need to get them on board, keep them on board to get this 3. 5 trillion plan or most of it or pars of it or whatever that becomes, theyre going to need to support it because you need all 50 democrats. For sure. They voted to support the Budget Resolution yesterday which was at that amount. And they also see that this second piece, i mean, this is the support thats by The American people for the second piece, for the human infrastructure, if you will, john, is really through the roof. Over 70, 80 of peoples support, for example, making sure that seniors have affordable access to Prescription Drugs, lowering the cost of Prescription Drugs or getting Hearing Aids or making sure that we have support for senior Care Or Child care. So, theres the components of the second part and making sure not that we just lower costs but that we also lower taxes for working parents with children and that its all paid for and paid for by people who earn more than 400,000 a year and corporations who have not paid their fair share. That seems fair to people. And so, its paid for. It will be putting Forth Programs to help everyday citizens. You know, theres a lot to like for Kyrsten Sinema, Joe Manchin and all of the other senators. There are democrats who say the 3. 5 trillion plan is the biggest rewriting of the social Safety Net of the new deal and republicans say its the biggest recreation of the social Safety Net since the new deal and like, ugh. Which side are you on . Well, clearly im on the side of the president making sure that we put forth the things that americans care about. I mean, whether its so im the Energy Secretary. And we just got a big report from the international governmental panel on Climate Change from the u. N. It should set our hair On Fire. And so, part of the second step will make sure that we have a clean electricity standards which sends a signal to the market that were going to get 100 of our lelectricity from clean sources. So that is also in the second piece. I mean, we need to have this because you see whats happening in the west. In terms of wild fires and droughts and siberia. Siberia is On Fire if you combined all other fires, Siberias Fire right now is larger than any of them. We have got to address this. So this second piece is so important for both individuals, for our planet, for our shared home. Let me ask you this, if memory serves, you were the first woman to be governor of michigan, correct . Correct. Im curious, you know, one of the things were seeing in New York now that Governor Cuomo said hes resigning is that New York will have its first Woman Governor ever. When i read that really . Its taken us to 2020 for the state of New York to get a woman as governor. And has to happen this way. Be that as it may, as someone who was a pioneer in your state, whats your advice to the incoming governor in New York . You know, i think like whether youre a woman or man, you have got to listen to the voices of real people. You have to understand where theyre coming from and what their struggles are. Lets look at what happened the past month, end of june to end of july, country grew up 4. 4 times. What happened in Nursing Homes, 3. 6 times. Theyre growing slower, they have a much higher vaccinated population but not all Nursing Homes are the same and this is where it gets important. If you find Nursing Homes where you actually had higher Vaccination Rates, they tended to grow slower, that 3. 6 times. But Nursing Homes where the Staff Vaccination fell below 50 , more in line with the rest of the country, then it was 5. 2 times faster. So the growth was actually faster in those Nursing Homes than the rest of the country. Okay . If you look at specific states, we can show that State Map again, go to mississippi, Nursing Homes grew 18 fold faster compared to 4. 4 for the country. Mississippi, 8. 4 times faster. So, we got to really pay attention to Nursing Homes. Whats happening in Nursing Homes will give an indication of whats happening the country. All around those Nursing Homes in that area right there. This question comes from jamie in San Diego. What should be the message from the cdc and the nih to counties with both high Vaccination Rate and high covid Transmission Rate, for example, i live in San Diego, although over 71 of the population is vaccinated, our Transmission Rate in covid cases are high. Yeah. So this is an interesting point. People often say, okay, we got enough vaccine out there. What else do we need to do . Theres two problems. One is that you want to vaccinate people. The second is you want to make sure people arent constantly being bathed in virus. Its pretty simple. Somebody said to me if the country as a whole were high filtration masks, K95 Or N95 for three weeks we could bring viral transmission down to containment. Three weeks. That applies to San Diego. We can see whats happening in San Diego county. 69 received one dose, 60 fully vaccinated but San Diego does something interesting where they bifurcate where the case rates are falling. The numbers tell the story. Theres no ambiguity in that graphic. We know wh is becoming infected right now in San Diego. But the message, at least for the next few weeks, until the viral Transmission Rates come down, if you live in a place with High Transmission, wear masks indoors. Im so glad that you have that graph because the covid infections if theyre breakthrough, theyre not the same as other infections when you look at the risk of death, right . So you really want to break out those numbers to see that. And speaking of, someone who would not be included necessarily in that white part of the graph, jim asks why should someone who has already had covid19 get vaccinated . Doesnt he or she already have antibodies. Jim, this is probably one of the most common questions i get, the answer is yes, you do have Antibodies Yund probably also have the the cells called t. Cells another part of your immune system. That is true. And theres even been throughout history examples where people who are naturally infected had stronger immunity than what a vaccine could provide. Thats not the case here. Thats just because we have the data now. In fact, there was a study last friday showing those who were vaccinated were half as likely to become reinfected and those who werent. We didnt know this for certain at the beginning but these vaccines are really good. Theres more variants coming. What theyre finding is the vaccines are more durable, lasting longer and offering broader protection against the variants. The data is clear, they can have their cake and eat it too. Get their vaccine and theyre wicked protected as they say in boston. Go get the vaccine. Youre better off. This is from carlos, im fully vaccinate and im exposed to somebody who got covid. What should i do . And do i have to quarantine . First of all, carlos, youre vaccinated, thats the really good news. And the recommendations are going to be pretty simple. If youve been vaccinated, you have this exposure, you do not need to quarantine. They say you should get tested now. Remember f you dont have symptoms in the past you dont need to get tested. Now theyre saying even if youre vaccinated and had an exposure you should get tested three to five days after. Wear a mask indoors until ten days. If you have symptoms, obviously isolate, get tested all the things you would normally do. Keep in mind, look f you have symptoms no, matter what, stay home. You dont know if its the cold, the flu, rsv. This is for people who dont have symptoms. If youve been exposed, you dont have symptoms, you are vaccinated so you dont need to quarantine but what if you have children . What if you have children. Small children. Small children. Asking for a friend. Asking for myself. You had if you have symptoms obviously isolate within the home. If you dont have any symptoms get tested and if you have the virus, then you may want to wear a Mask Or Something like that or stay away from the kids, but if not, i think youre okay. In the interim, then, as youre waiting to be tested after exposure, thats the tricky part, right . Yeah. If you really are worried about it, i think that if youre vaccinated the risk is really quite low. I mean, is it 0, no but its quite low. Just tell us how you came to this 2 Billion figure and how Dominions Business has been impacted by the airing of these conspiracy theories. Good morning, brianna. Thanks for having me. The 2 Billion figure has a number of components that we outline in the complaints that we filed. Lets start with the value of the company. Back in november before this campaign of lies started, dominion was A Billion dollar company. If you look at their earnings and compare them to comparable companies. But the value of the company has been decimated as a result of this campaign of lies. The company is radioactive, so thats one element of the damages is the tremendous loss in value of the company. If you also look at the historic rates at which dominion was renewing its longterm contracts with local government for their Voting Equipment and the rates at which dominion was gaining new contracts, that has also taken a huge hit, and that is quantified at around 600 Million of future profits that have been lost as a result of this campaign of lies. So those are two examples of specific damages and on top of that were seeking what are known as general damages and defamation claims which can be multiples of those amounts and we are seeking punitive damages against each of these defendants. So Patrick Bern and one america didnt respond to requests for comments from us. They told cnn in the coverage of the 2020 election, newsmax reported on allegations made by well known figures including the president , his advisers and members of congress. Dominions action is an attempt to squelch such reporting and the free press. How do you prove that its defamation . So, first of all, What Newsmax has said is just not true, and fox who we also sued earlier is trying the same defense. They did not just report on allegations of the president or his advisers. Newsmax, for instance, its own anchors were saying the truth is finally told, or claiming that they had done their own internal investigations that corroborated these lies they were putting onto their air. So its just not the case that they were covering President Trump. They were actually courting President Trump and his supporters by broadcasting these lies. In terms of what we have to prove, at the very most what we have to prove is that these defendants recklessly disregarded the truth. And the evidence of that is copious. If you look at our complaints, starting in early November 2020 and going all the way to the present day, you have a parade of officials, republican, democrats, and independent officials who explained over and over again that these were lies, and that they had done Audits And Hand counts and so forth that confirmed the accuracy of the tabulation of votes by dominion machines. And thats one point that i think your viewers need to understand. For these jurisdictions like Georgia And Maricopa county, they have Paper Ballots. A voter votes and can see on their Paper Ballot who their vote was recorded for, and the governments store these ballots so they can later conduct Hand Counts to confirm the accuracy of the machines. So these fantasies of a Vote Rigging done through computers, they just Cant Work when you consider that they have these Paper Ballots that they store and they later count. So we have a tremendous amount of evidence already about how these defendants knew the truth, they knew about these Hand Counts, they knew what all the officials were saying confirming the accuracy of the counts, and yet they proceed Today Broadcast these lies over and over and over again anyway. What about trump and i do want to note, for instance, Fox News who you have sued edited out some Election Fraud claims on the version of the interview of trump posted online. This is something that he, his spokesperson for him said, what about trump . You sued Fox News, mike len dell, sidney powell. Are you considering suing trump . We looked at the participants in the campaign of lies. We havent ruled anybody out at this point. Can i ask you, if hes where it starts, is it sort of like maybe working toward that . Why not start with where it starts . Well, i dont want to say that President Trump is where it starts. These defendants all produced plenty of their own content espousing and promoting these lies well beyond what President Trump ever said. So President Trump certainly participated in this, but each of these defendants is responsible for the lies that they themselves espouse on their air, and for the many other the cast of characters of unreliable sources that they put on their air to also tell these terrible lies about dominion.
