Direction and continuing to hit levels we have not seen in months. The united states now averaging more than 108,000 new cases a day. As the Delta Variant Spread as mong the unvaccinated. That is the highest Level Weve seen in six months as schools across the country prepare to reopen. The number of people hospitalized with coronavirus now more than 66,000. Also at highest level since february. And even more tragically, the virus is killing an average of more than 500 americans per day. That is more than double the average from just three weeks ago. There is some good news. The rate of vaccines administers continues to increase. But there are still nine states where less than 40 of the population is fully vaccinated. Lets get straight to florida and cnns Natasha Chen who is live in orlando. Natasha, florida now reporting an alltime high in cases. It is become one of the epicenters of covid19 in the united states. Reporter boris, the trends are looking really troubling, especially as schools starts in many districts, in Orange County here class resumes in person tomorrow. Now let me show you a little bit what were seeing right in front of us. Because there is a Vaccination Site on our side of the street. There is no one in line for it. But there is a Testing Site across the street, there is a line of cars and if you go over there to where the cones are, were told by staff that those cones are the Twohour Mark for waiting for a Covid Test right now. So there is a strong Interest And Urgency among people trying to get tested. We did however talk to one person who was the very first to show up to get his son his second vaccine shot. This man happens to be a nurse. So i asked him what his job is like right now. How much Hard Er is your Job Today than it was months ago. Two times as harder. Because the resources are low. The mentality of the nurses is strained because all of the patients are sick. And we want to do our best to take Care Of them but it is a never ending battle because there is always more patients to take Care Of. Reporter now lets show you a little bit of putting florida in the context of the nationwide trends here. New data showing that as of today, the Hospital Patients classified as covid19 patients in florida, about a quarter of them are covid19 patients versus in the u. S. Across the board 8. 9 . And if you look at the level of Community Transmission in the state of florida, the entire map is red. Every single county, High Transmission there. And of course, when you look at the sevenday average of new cases in florida, it is the highest as you mentioned that theyve seen in the pandemic altogether and at the very end of that graph, you may see sort of a jagged stepladder looking line going up and that is because the state has taken down its daily Covid Dashboard and now reporting only once a week, boris. Yeah, natasha, it is important to remember that Floridas Governor Ron Desantis is taking a hands off approach and as we watch students return to the classroom, that could spell even more trouble for florida down the road. Natasha chen in orlando, thank you so much. So as the Delta Variant continues to spread, the long awaiting return to normal remains illusive. Ed lavendera joins you live from dallas. There has been a number of events around the country that have been canceled, the new York Auto Show And Jazz fest in new orleans. Some are still being held like the Sturgis Motorcycle Rally in South Dakota but last year it turned out to be a Superspreader Event . Reporter right. So it depends, the Bottom Line since this point since the reaction and the response to the spread of this pandemic has been politicized to the extent that it has been, really depends on what state youre in or the organizers of whatever event. But across the country, youre really seeing the beginning of a dramatic shift in this whole idea of returning to normal. And as you mentioned, how it is becoming much pmore illusive. Look at the major events across the country that have been canceled. New York Jazz fest, the band Limp Bizkit has canceled their show and the new Jersey Straw Festival and Garth Brooks promoting a Stadium Tour and playing to a sold out audience in Kansas City is now saying that hes going to reevaluate his future Stadium Tours for the rest of this year. There are other big name bands that have also planned Stadium Tours as well including The Rolling Stones and that have announced a Concert Date for later this year as well. And then on top of all of this, in the Daytoday Life of pls of americans, there are major corporations that are announcing that they are rolling back and putting a pause on how theyre going to get their employees back to the office safely. You could see a list there of just some of the corporations that are beginning to reevaluate what theyre do here in the coming weeks as across the country were seeing dramatic increases in the number of coronavirus cases and all of this, boris, slowing down that after 18 months or so of this coronavirus pandemic, these wishes an these dreams of getting life back to normal, or as much as back to normal as possible is becoming much more illusive and quite frankly big Question Marks as to just how quickly it is going to return to normal at The End of day here. Wolf. And it has to be said that or boris. Sorry about that. I appreciate that. That is high praise. But so much of this is preventible if more people have been vaccinated. We likely wouldnt be dealing with so many of issues so far down the road. Ed lavendera from dallas. Good to see you, my friend. So lets discuss the effort to eradicate coronavirus with a expert. Michael osterholm joins us now from the university of minnesota. Appreciate your time and getting your expertise this morning. It seems like the country lost a month of progress large events are getting canceled, businesses as you hear from Ed Pushing back a return to the office. What needs to be done to get the country back on track . Well thank you for having me, boris. Lets just be really clear that we still have a very large part of our population that is unprotected. Over 90 Million people who are eligible to get vaccinated have not been vaccinated. So this surge that is occurring right now and primarily in the southern Sun Belt states may end up lasting another four or five weeks and those states and dropping precipitously, the question is still out on what will happen with the other states, will they see the kind of surges weeks later than we see if the south. But the bottom Line Message is we need to get people vaccinated now because were still going to have a lot of susceptible people even after the surge is over. And were talking about surges that could call in the fall or the winter. So when people talk about getting back to normal, i hope they understand that until we have a very high percentage of our population protected, were still at risk of seeing these very kind of events that were seeing right now. That is a really good point, too, the fact that it is summertime and a lot of people out outdoors and as we get closer to autumn and winter, were likely to see more surges because people are inside and a space where the virus thrives. We heard from Natasha Chen, one in four teenagers being tested for covid are testing positive. For kids under 12 that number not much better. Governor Ron Desantis is banning schools from requiring masks. When you look at numbers, what is your message to leaders that argue that parents should determine what their kids do to mitigate the spread of covid . Well, obviously parents have a primary responsibility for protecting the Health And Safety of their children but they also have to have a responsibility to base that on the scientistic information that basically describes what the risk is for those kids and how transmission occurs. And so i think this is one of the challenges we have right now and particularly with the Delta Variant. In the piece earlier, you talked about the festivals being canceled but there are many that are going on. We have State And County fairs, a lot of major events going on outdoors. And one of the things that have been concerning with the Delta Variant is the high level of infectiousness where even outdoor events when people are crowded together resulting in very large number of cases. So prior to delta, we said it is primarily indoor related experiences. Well that is still true. But even outdoor ones are now challenging. So all of the issues around delta make this even a more complicated situation than it was just eight to ten weeks ago. So i want to look at the national picture quickly because deaths from covid have doubled in the last three weeks. The rate of vaccinations fortunately is also increasing. Are you anticipating that this bump in vaccinations is going to help alleviate the situation . Absolutely not. We have to be honest and clear about that. And when i say absolutely not, i cant emphasize enough how important it is to get vaccines. Yes, get vaccinated. But it takes four to six weeks for the immunity to take hold. And so anything for the next four to six weeks is also baked into the system. These vaccines will help surely bring the surge to a quicker close in four to six weeks texas will surely protect us against future surges. But we have to understand right now it is a distancing, it is not being in large crowds, it is wearing an N95 Mask and for kids, kN95 Masks are available and we have to emphasize to really bring the Case Numbers down as much as we can. We have to leave the conversation there. Professor michael osterholm, thank you so much for the time. Thank you. Coming up, a Code Red for humanity. Weve been watching Apocalypsic Scenes Around The World and extreme Heat And Drought fuelling wildfires an eviscerating forms and forests, some really sad scenes in greece. Look at this. Ferries having to evacuate thousands people from a island. Fighting some of the worst wildfires in the history amid a blistering heat wave. Temperatures spiking to 113 degrees. Meantime here in the united states, the Dixie Fire forcing thousands from homes in northern california. And this fire is growing now nearly 500,000 acres. It is the second largest wildfire in Californias History and is still far from contained. Californias Governor Gavin Newsom directly linking these fires to the Climate Crisis. Listen. Extreme weather conditions, extreme droughts, leading to extreme conditions and wildfire challenges likes of which weve never seen in our history. And as a consequence we need to acknowledge just straight up these are climateinduced wildfires and we have to acknowledge we have the capacity in the country not just the state to solve this. There is a landmark United Nations report out this morning on climate Change And Warming that the earth is warming at a rate faster than thought. The window to take decisive action to avoid the most dire consequences is closing. The head of the u. N. Is calling it a Code Red for humanity. Cnn Chief Climate Correspondent Bill Weir joins us now. Walk us through the details in the report. What else does it say . Well it is really striking and in its starkness. The sense after suredness is there with all of the amounts of data since the last report that came out about eight years ago. In 2013, 2014 if you had said predicted and what you just shows that this would be happening in the world and the recorded that we would be shattering by the week, that would have been considered alarmist. Now after the 234 scientists and 66 nations look at 14 now papers and come up with language that 195 countries could agree on, enemies and allies alike and theyre saying, yes, it is happening, our worst fears are coming true faster and more severe than anybody have predicted an the only way to stop it is to stop burning fos you will fuels forever. And there is a budget whether it is spent on coming one alternatives or in the oldfashioned way will determine really the fate of life as we know it. Well, bill, youve been covering the Climb Crisis for ye years and weve been watching the natural disasters that used to be one once in a lifetime. But it doesnt feel like the issue gets the urgency from the leaders around the world that is requiring to address it in a meaningful way. Do you think this report could help change that . Well see. But again this is the sixth of these, chapter six of these warning reports, boris. And the pledges that were made at the paris accords, no country virtually is meeting them yet. And theyre supposed to try to go to glasgow in a couple of months an up the ante. And the united states, you see what is happening with an Infrastructure Bill. Just trying to do modest things becomes a partisan fight. But what youre seeing a lot of action in and may dictate how things go is in the courts. The socalled Climate Kids Suing for the right to a liveable planet, or who is accountable for this. Can you use sort of forensics of tieing Weather Events to Climate Change and then Oil And Gas companies for their part in this and reports like this which is the definitive state of the science will go to both judges, juries an policymakers. And bill, the biden administration outlined that the Climate Crisis would be a big priority. Obviously there is plenty that the united states could do to help this efforts. But ultimately it is a global issue. Are you seeing enough from other major players like china to make a difference . It doesnt sound like it . Well, china is trying to have it all. They have so many mouths to feed and people lifting into the middle class. So theyre putting more coal on line than the rest of the world but also leading the world in solar and trying to have it all. Theyre also a race for Natural Resources out there. Right now were dealing with the social license to go drilling for oil. When we know what it is doing to us. How long will companies have that social license. We stopped burning whales for light at a certain point. How soon that moment happens may determine a lot. Pivot that needs to happen if there is going to be sustainable life for humans on this planet. A sobering report. Bill weir, thank you so much as always. You bet. Coming up, Andrew Cuomo Fighting to stay in power. The State Assembly considering impeachment as one of his accused breaks her silence. Well get you the latest details next. Rock the boat dont rock the boat, Baby Rock the boat dont tip the boat over here we go. Dont rock the boat, Baby Rock the boat see disneys jungle cruise. Its time to rock the boat, america. Someone once told me, that i should get used to people staring. So i did. Its okay, you can stare. When youre a twotime gold medalist, it comes with the territory. Its taken a lot to get to this moment. Grew up at midnight the maccabees dreams are on the line. You got this. Refresh. It all, comes down, to this. Were 26 minutes past the hour. New York Governor Andrew Cuomo is facing increasing pressure after an investigation found that he sexually harassed 11 women. Last night his top aide resigned and this morning were hearing from the woman called executive Assistant Number one and the State Attorney generals report. Shes now publicly detailing her accusations against the governor. And right now at this hour the State Assembly Judiciary Committee is meeting to discuss their findings and next steps toward a potential impeachment. Polo sandoval joins us live. What are you expecting out of the meeting this morning . Reporter well, boris, that pressure that you mentioned likely intensifying with several developments. Just today alone, just there c this, that the Inner Circle is shrinking with the resignation of one of Melissa Derosa. And there is also as you mi mentioned one of the accusers stepping into the public light and attaching a name and a face to some of the most Serious Ac accusations. Some of the Sexual Harassment allegations that have come forward toward the governor. And then the final point, the New York State Assembly getting closer to a potential impeachment vote. That is happening in closed session, a conversation between those lawmakers and investigators. We were told that later this afternoon we could get a better idea in terms of what the timeline is for that investigation. But late last week we reported that the governor is on notice and told that he has until this friday to provide lawmakers with any kind of evidence that he feels might potentially help his case. But back to the second point that i made and Brittany Comisso who spoke publicly. I want you to hear a portion of that exclusive interview that she gave Cbs News as she described one of the aencounters that took place. And keep in mind we have reached back out to the Governors Office after that interview was made public and have not heard back. But before that interview was released, the Cuomos Attorney addressing this allegation saying that they are not true. These were not hugs that he would give his mother or his brother. These were hugs with the intention of getting some personal sexual satisfaction out of, then they started to be hugs with kisses on cheek and then there one at one point a hug and then when he went to kiss me on the cheek, he quickly turned his head and he kissed me on the lips. What did you say . I didnt Say Anything. I didnt Say Anything this whole time. People dont understand that this is the governor of the state of New York. There are troopers that are outside of the mansion, theyre not there to protect me. They are there to protect him. I felt as though if i did something to insult him, especially insult him in his own home, it wasnt going to be him that was going to get fired or in trouble. Did you ever have any consensual sexual activity with the governor of new York State . No. Is it possible that the governor thought that these interactions that he was having with you was something that was normal, something that he thought was not a big deal . No. Maybe to him. That he thought this was normal. But to me, and the other women that did he this to, it was not normal. It was not welcomed, and it was certainly not consensual. Reporter it is certainly a very disturbing allegations. Again, we continue to reach out to the Governors Office to try to get comment regarding this most recent interview. But she really is just one of 11 women that are listed in that Attorney General report. Before this weekend, we only knew her as executive Assistant Number one. What is different compared to some of the other allegations is that many of the allegations coming from her were put down in a criminal complaint on thursday here in Albany County and that initiated a criminal investigation and that opens up the possibility that the governor could possibly face some of the criminal charges relating to this. So again just multiple things that are taking place this week and what is going to be quite eventful for the governor. Polo, and six District Attorneys in New York have solicited information from the Attorney General and from others to see if potential further criminal charges are filed. So a lot of headaches ahead for Governor Cuomo. Thank you so much. Lets discuss the situation with joshua solomon, a Capitol Bureau Reporter for the albany times union. I appreciate you digging into this with us. What are you anticipating is going to come out of this Assembly Judiciary Committee meeting . What steps are next . Sure. You know, the meeting has a lot of hype right now. Obviously this is the first meeting of the Judiciary Committee which is charged with investigating the governor. So since the report has come out, there is a lot of excitement around it. But really what were going to get is just next steps. Were going to get a timelineond where they could proceed from now. And according to my reporting speaking with members since the governor has that friday the 13th Deadline of providing responses to the committees wide, wide investigation, which includes Nursing Home deaths, it includes political favors to family members, it includes Nursing Home book deal, the whole gam bit. He has until friday to respond to that. Then they could discuss his response and from there they could start to, if they choose to do so, draft articles of impeachment, which means we could be looking at something like around Labor Day when they could really vote or move forward with articles of impeachment, talk about Impeachment Managers and thing of that nature. Well get a better feel for that Time Line by The End of the day. Just a month away. Lets talk about britney speaking publicly for the first time. Not only to Cbs News but to your colleagues at the albany times union. She waited until the Attorney Generals report was published to speak out. She told your paper that what Governor Cuomo did was in her words illegal. We should point out that his attorneys declined to respond and in your conversations with lawmakers i wonder thousand they have processed her putting her Name And Face out there. Does it change the way that they approach this . It is a good question. Obviously that interview went live today. But what we do know is that back in april when she spoke to us, you know, then under anonymous, to put forward her allegations, mostly what we know today, a lot of similar instances there. That was a big moment in albany, a big moment for lawmakers, that was informing a lot of decisions that led to more aggressive calls for resignation and pushing to see investigations further through. So the fact that shes now gone on network television, put her name to the put her face to the executive assistant one, it could only mean that things are going further from here. But were in the middle of quite the News Cycle right now. And as you mentioned before, were a month away, maybe from Impeachment Proceedings moving forward. So it is going to be interesting to see how that is go this is another moment in this highly charged but how does that play out. Joshua, very quickly, i want to ask you about cuomos top aid Melissa Derosa resigning Last Night. What does that say to you about the state of things in the Governors Office. They are looking to put fires out however they can and they are also looking for some of them realize the writing is on the wall. Well see what happens. The governor has given no indication he will resign. We have to leave the conversation there. Joshua solomon, thank you so much. We appreciate your time. Thank you. The built Bill Clearing A Key Hurdle late on sunday following a rare Weekend Session in the senate. Lets go to lauren fox, shes live on Capitol Hill with the latest. Lauren, this would be a very big accomplishment for the white house. Not only because of the money this provides for Americas Infrastructure because Joe Biden campaigned on Laej Segislating bipartisan fashion. Reporter this sends a message that president is able to do hard things when it comes to passing this massive infrastructure proposal. One of his key items on campaign trail, hes making statement to lawmakers an people back home, i said i would work awith weekend an i have been doing it. There have been republicans dragging this process out at every single turn. But we do believe that the votes are there. 18 republicans voted Last Night on a procedural vote. We expect that that final Vote Tally will be somewhere ben 12 and 18 republicans. I think that that is something that democrats are feeling really good about, the fact that they could point to a bipartisan accomplishment. Once they pass the bill, which we expect to happen in the middle of night unless republicans yield back to some time. Once they pass the bill, the democrats will move forward with the budget resolution. That is an important step because that will provide the blue print necessary for democrats to write their own legislation known as reconciliation. For people back home that simply means that democrats will have the ability to pass a bigger Infrastructure Bill that includes paid Time Off as well as other key provisions for democrats with just 51 votes. So that is what is coming down the pipe. But we expect this bipartisan Infrastructure Bill will pass sometime soon. Boris. Not a simple process. We appreciate your walking us through it. Lauren fox from Capitol Hill. Thank you so much. If a whether that bill gets to the house, there is a lot of key voices with influence over what happens. Seizing control of a fifth city in just the last few days. The fall of the capitol of kunduz, a devastating blow to the afghan government and 22 days before u. S. Troops are set to complete their withdrawal. Nick Paton Walsh joins us live with the latest. We anticipated that the taliban would surge amid the u. S. Withdrawal but this is painful to watch and astonishing. Reporter not to say that any of the Gains Areir Vee rersible, but it is one of the worst pierces of time that i could recall in the last 20 years for the afghan government. So staunchly backed by the u. S. With billions of dollars and lives lost over the past years. Five capitols seem to have fallen since friday. The first on friday. The most significant yesterday. Kunduz, a significant sit there and certainly and two others under pressure one in Salmon And Garsy seems to have the taliban pushing toward it at the moment. Kunduz has been taken an kicked out twice because of u. S. Air power. That is still in evidence at the moment but it is reduced in scope. Some might say they are able to deliver less pin pointing strikes than before because there is not a u. S. Presence necessarily on the ground so the the challenge for Afghan Security Forces is holding the line and rushing around as they are at the moment with multiple fires to put out and ten trying to find a way to endure when the u. S. Fire power not Ase Effectie and runs out three weeks from now. Dark times ahead, boris. Dark times. Nick Paton Walsh, thank you very much. Joining us now is cnn military analyst general mart hertling, The General for europe and the seventh army. General, Thanks For Sharing part of the day with us. I appreciate the time. I want to get your reaction to the taliban taking control of five cities since just friday. That does that prove that afghan forces simply werent ready to protect their government . To be honest with you, boris about a month ago, myself and ot others suggested that It Action would be faster than many in the government expected. It is been even faster than i expected to be honest with you. The taliban offensive on the afghan cities is just been contrary to what they agreed on doing in the Peace Talks in Dough Har which many of us knew they would not adhere to and it is challenging to the afghan force. Remember when Secretary Austin and talking about this withdrawal, they said that hopefully the afghan government would be able to withdraw some of their forces from the rural area and protect some of the major cities in the provinces. They have not done that. This taking of Kunduz Yesterday is critically as nick mentioned, twice before the taliban had taken that city and twice before the u. S. Held the afghan government and Afghan Security Forces take it back. I dont think theyre going to be able to do it again. Youll see from the maps the different provinces that are being overrun by the taliban very quickly, that this is going much faster than anyone expected. And general, an afghan official shared with cnn that they would need close Air Support immediately saying quote, things are getting nasty. So far, the biden Administrations Response has been to increase Air Strikes against taliban positions as they continue moving, sweeping through the country. But u. S. Cent com, the commander, made clear that u. S. Air support is going to go away at The End of the month. Could we potentially see a change in that policy as we watch afghanistan spiral into taliban control . I dont think we will. For a couple of reasons. First of all, the Air Support thats being delivered there is being coordinated between u. S. Forces and afghan forces on the ground in terms of Air Coordination centers. At the same time, also though, this is the first time that youve seen a taliban that has not been as covert as they have been in the past. They are wantingly going through these areas, threatening the government, conducting their actions, which are both threatening and killing of citizens. So it would be extremely difficult to get the amount of Air Power into the area and even if that was possible, which it would be, who calls in that fire without, you know, causing damage to friendly forces . Theres already been taliban who have suggested that u. S. Air power has destroyed hospitals and government buildings and all the other things they always say were doing as part of their messaging campaign. That would only get worse if you had Air Power without u. S. Forces on the ground seeing where that Air Power was distributed. After so much investment from the united states in that Country And Life and treasure, its devastating to watch whats happening in afghanistan. General, thanks for the time. Thank you. Of course. According to a senate investigation, former Justice Department officials described having to fend off efforts by a trumpappointed lawyer, Jeffrey Clark, to oust Department Leaders and use the department to help the former president stay in power. Joining us now is cnns whitney wild. And it sounds like clark wanted to get his bosses fired because he wouldnt go along with the big lie. Right. That was all part of this effort. Sorry, my phones ringing. Sorry. That happens. Theres this real important play here. We are at an Inflection Point with these committee investigations. Theres a Senate Committee Investigation and house select investigation that are really zeroing in on the same thing. Theres this important person here, Jeffrey Clark. At the time, he had the environmental unit within doj then the head of the civil unit. Very important person leading up to january 6th. The latest reporting we have from my colleagues is that he was so fixated on this Election Fraud claim that he actually requested a briefing by the director of national intelligence, john ratcliffe. He also told people within doj he had unique information to suggest that the chinese were able to use Special Thermometers to manipulate votes. When he got this briefing from john, according to sources familiar with this briefing, he was not swayed by ratcliffs argument. Whats important to know is that was around december 28th. Late in december, five days after Bill Barr left the Justice Department, five days he said there was no widespread Election Fraud, none of that seemed to matter to Jeffrey Clark who was fixated on this Election Fraud claims. As he move forward, we are going to watch closely the committees work trying to talk to people who were in Jeffrey Clarks and donald trumps orbit at the time to find out in what way they were trying to make these overt efforts to utilize the powers of the Justice Department to overturn this election.
