Good morning to our viewers in the United States and all around the world. Im John Berman with rhianna keeler. This morning for the first time since february the u. S. Is averaging more than 100,000 new Covid Cases per day. That is the highest it has been an almost 6 months. Hospitalizations also continue to rise. More than 66,000 now. The number of deaths is headed in the wrong direction. One out of every five people hospitalized in this country is in florida right now. In jacksonville, six members of one church died within two weeks. And the pastor says 18 to 20 other Church Members are hospitalized with a virus. On sunday the church held its first vaccination clinic. One Florida Doctor says childrens hospitals in the state are overwhelmed while republican governor Ron Desantis resists calls to require massive schools. Heres how dr. Jonathan reiner describe the search. It is so high in florida that i think if florida or another country we would have to consider banning travel from florida to the United States. He needs to understand that he has painted himself into a corner. People are dying in florida. It is going to get much worse. Harry, the doctor set it up asking the question, if Florida Or Louisiana were foreign countries, what we been travel . I mean this is bad. Florida, louisiana, look at this. Worst of the entire pandemic in both Louisiana And Florida. Look at that per 100,000. Up to 100 per day. Look at this, hospitalizations. Same deal, look at this. Worst of the entire pandemic in both Louisiana And Florida. The only difference is louisiana , florida is worse than the other. But anyway you look at it is bad. Compared to other countries look at this. These are countries. The united kingdom, france, greece. A sickly have to wait 14 days after youve been in the country. Essentially a travel ban. Covid cases per 100,000, louisiana 99. Florida 90. United kingdom, only 40. Still really high but not nearly as high as Florida Or Louisiana. Greece 25. These places, Louisiana And Florida and there are some other states in there as well, they are worse than places in which travelers are mostly bad. The doctor was onto something. Numbers back him up. It is bad in alabama. I know you have a Loved One in alabama so this is what you care deeply about. I want to play you sound from Marjorie Taylor Greene who was in alabama somehow getting applause for celebrating how unvaccinated that state is. Listen. You lucky people here in alabama might get a knock on your door because i hear alabama white might be one of the most unvaccinated states. A pasta that. Applause. I dont understand any of this. This is bizarre. You mention i have a Loved One down there. Fortunately she got vaccinated in march but they are putting her life in danger. Shes working every day going out there dealing with a lot of unvaccinated people. Alabama, lowest in the country in terms of fully vaccinated people. Seven they average of new cases 58 per 100,000. That is the highest in the nation. This is a recipe for disaster and they are putting innocent people who have done what they needed to do to keep themselves safe at risk. I would use a Curse Word honestly, but i dont do that. So it is just bad. Luckily vaccinations are going up there. I want to talk about daily debts. Because they are a lagging indicator and the hope has been that even as Cases Rise and maybe even hospitalizations with the variant, we have enough people vaccinated that deaths will go up as quickly. Maybe, that is the hope. What we can see here, the seven Day Average of new deaths , we are starting to see that the deaths are rising a little bit. Openly we never get back to where we were back in december and january. But here is the thing. And that is if you look at the percentage rise, that is what is worrying to me. If we look at the past week versus one week earlier we see a 43 rise. We look at the past week versus , again, a huge rise. What we are seeing here are large rises that are going on in deaths , and that is the worrisome sign essentially what you see is, yes the numbers are relatively low, but we are seeing that rise. They are going up quickly. Lets hope they stop at so some point. So important hairy. Thank you for being here. And his psa, Wt H so important. Thank you for that. One party that has been canceled because of the pandemic is this years new Orleans Jazz fest which was scheduled to take place in october. The lineup was to feature the rolling stones, the foo fighters, liz oh but it was canceled because louisiana broke its own record for covid 19 related hospitalizations. Multiple days last week. It has seen its highest number friday with more than 2400 people hospitalized with the virus. Joining us now is cnn political commentator and former mayor of New Orleans, Mitch Landrieu. This is terrible. We are talking two years in a row just as canceled. What does this mean to New Orleans and the state . This is a tragic for us. I talked to Quinn Davis last night who runs the festival, he made the absolute right decision. It was very wise but it is tragic for so many reasons. First of all if you ask anybody in New Orleans was our favorite thing to do . To see other people, to be with them. At the top of that it is the Number One Job Provider for our artist and musicians and restaurants. And it is symbolic of who we are as a people. It also portends that other major events that are set for october, which are huge Job Providers, are also at risk. This is the fourth time the Jazz Fest has been planned and canceled over the last year and a half. It is visible to everybody in New Orleans. However, a portends, as harry was saying, something much more traffic. All driven by the fact that people would not get vaccinated. Which so tragic is that it is all preventable. And wearing mask and getting the vaccine cannot only save lives but say livelihoods. So, as all the statistics show, your previous segment about florida and louisiana, the numbers do not lie. Hospitalizations do not live. Our Healthcare Providers are so frustrated and they are very angry because they know this is preventable. And it is very unfortunate. The Vaccination Rate in louisiana 38 . Dramatically lagging behind the national average. But what else do you think this is going to affect . Could football be in jeopardy . I think if everything continues the way it is now, which is people not getting the vaccine and more people getting sick, at The End of the day you have to protect Life And Health and safety. And if that is not getting done, it is going to force decisions people do not want. So as the governor said many times, this is in the peoples hands. You are trying as hard as they can to convince people. But if they dont, then decisions have to be made that protect peoples lives. So i think its pretends not a good trajectory for us. We will see how it develops over the next week and have or so but it puts everything at risk. I know you think people want to see lsu play, they want to see the saints play. Do you really think that is in jeopardy . Do you think that is going to drive it home for people . I dont know what is going to drive it home for people. If in fact people continue not to get vaccinated and more people get sick and the Science Dictates that when we are that close together we are all at risk. Of course you know a private business or a notforprofit does not need the government to tell them what to do or not to do. I can choose to do with themselves. They can choose to require proof of vaccination. At The End of the day i think the governor and elected officials around the state are going to try except for a couple of them , to articulate with the Science Dictates for us to do. But clearly the fact that people are not getting vaccinated or putting everybody at risk. Not only their lives but also their livelihoods. I think that is tragic. This is going to be a big wake up call. Much like the Decision Adam Silver made with the nba early on. This may have a ripple effect. I think it might be too early to make a call on that. Butler, suggest this lesson is it is putting lives at risk. It is also putting fun at risk. Thank you so much Mitch Landrieu appreciated. Landmark climate report released this morning by a scientific panel says there is no avoiding a hotter future. This is earths climate is warming at a rate faster than previously thought and warns that the window for action is narrowing fast. The u. S. Secretarygeneral calls the report a Code Red for humanity. Chief climate Correspondent Bill Weir joins us live. We were just finishing with prion image talking about how things are with covid. This is a worldwide blinking Code Red. Yes it is a Code Red for humanity. This is a 234 scientists, 66 countries thats been eight years doing the state of the science, where things stand. And Theres Nothing new here. It is just like the worst thing you want to hear your doctor. Yes you have this and you have that. Theyve moved up the Warming Trend as the tools get better. As Computer Models get better, as satellites get better. They are able to now say it looks like we are going to blow past appears accord target. We warmed up the plan about two degrees fahrenheit. Peers line was 2. 7. We will probably go past that in 2030. A decade sooner than previously thought. But every fraction of every degree counts. Because we all want to live on a planet that is at two degrees, not one that is 4 8. The westwood about rising Sea Levels . I was just upping greenland with some scientists out there who are really the first responders. And their lives are becoming more endangered after they go on the melting ice. Much of greenland melted in one day last week to cover florida into into the water. The whole state. And that is a daily occurrence. The new sciences it is also writing the gears of the oceans currents. The gulfstream which runs Weather Patterns from the Bahamas To Ireland and all of the northeast United States. It is being affected by this. Even if you live inland, this will affect Weather Patterns because everything is so connected. But, there is the science fair. There is the solutions they are. Ultimately all this comes down to is Human Nature and politics. Was have to make changes. Demand them, talk about it. You are the only guy i know who can say i was in greenland last week the way some people say i was in New Jersey last week. I wish i could take everybody with me. Attorney General Jeffrey Rosen provided testimony over the weekend to the Senate Judiciary Committee about Trucks Pressure Campaign on the Justice Department. One senator in the room said after hearing rosen, i was struck by how close the country came to total catastrophe. Joining me now is senator Richard Menthol. Hes one of three senators who sat for the entire session with rosen. Senator thank you so much for being with us this morning. What exactly was the country close to . When you say total catastrophe, what is it you think almost happened . Thanks for having me. The country came very close to a coup. Because the president of the United States, then Donald Trump, sought to break the department of justice enlisted in his attempt to overthrow the election. He relentlessly and purposely pressured and sought to break the department of justice. But they withstood that pressure. And fortunately, although he would stop at nothing, the relevant officials in the department of justice that up to him. Why So Rosen testified that pressure was relentless . Or what did he testify about the nature of the pressure . I cannot go into the details at this point. We will produce a report. The american people deserve to know. But the meetings at the oval office, using the full weight of the president s Office And Phone calls and other kinds of settings. And then enlisting some of the lower officials him at least one prominent one, to try to undermine the authority of the acting Attorney General. And that was really an attempt to go around him, and eventually it was a kind of slowmoving Saturday Night massacre. Fortunately for the country, it failed. You are talking about Jeffrey Clark, right . Who was inside the Justice Department at that point, drafting letters To Georgia with lies. Think the Justice Department felt that the election was somehow fraudulent. And trying to get georgia to see its own electors. What else do you know the clock was doing . Well, it may have been more than just Jeffrey Clark. It may have been others in the trump orbit. And that is the focus of our investigation going forward. Do you have reason to believe it was more than clark . There is a lot of reason to believe that more individuals than just Jeffrey Clark participated in the scheme. And there is more than ample reason to think that some kind of criminal charges may be appropriate. Will kind of charges . What kind of criminal charges . Well again im not going to go into the details at this point. We know that there is more than ample evidence to refer to the department of justice. At least for its consideration. At least i feel at this point. But the chairman of the committee, durbin, is going to make a decision about the witnesses going forward. And we should hear from them. But the american people also should see and hear all of these evidence that youve been asking about. You are an attorney. I have a guy that is the former attorney for the disc for connecticut. I dont understand what loss could have been broken or what people could be charged with. So just help me understand exactly what laws we are talking about . We are talking about potential false statements, obstruction of justice, attempts to impede the lawful activities of the united date. What Donald Trump did here, in effect, was try to overthrow the election. And there are all kinds of potential criminal charges because asking that department of justice to call an election corrupt falsely is potentially a criminal violation. And there ought to be Responsibility And Accountability here. Thank you for clarifying that. In the last few days ive had former ambassador John Bolton who work for Donald Trump as national security advisor. He has condemned the insurrection and the activity. But doesnt think calling it a coup was appropriate. And we just had Attorney General Alberto Gonzales who agreed. In their framing the institutions held. We should be relieved that the institutions held. How do you feel about that . I agree that we should be very great that the institutions held john. There were some real Profiles In Courage here. The acting Attorney General enlisted the top leadership of the department of justice on his side. And probably only their determination to hold those institutions and uphold the Rule Of Law preserved our democracy at that critical moment. There is a lot here in our investigations continue very aggressively. My hope is that Jeff Clark will appear voluntarily along with others in the trump orbit. Including possibly members of congress who had a role. Finally, overnight, a key procedural vote you got 18 republicans as part of the bible bipartisan infrastructure deal. How concerned are you that when this goes to the house, economical of there . I think there is a real determination to make sure that we rebuild our roads, bridges, airports. The country has delayed for much too long, this muchneeded effort. And i am hopeful. Im never confident about anything in the United States congress. Nancy pelosi is a supremely competent leader. And i am very hopeful about the results. Senator Richard Menthol we appreciate your time. Thanks for joining us this morning. Up next atop eight two Governor Cuomo just quit. Is this the beginning of The End of the governor who is about to face impeachment to Mark And Congresswoman Alexandria Ocasiocortez relive the day when insurrection is stormed the u. S. Less than one week after a report from the state Attorney General found the governor sexually harassed 11 women. She put out a statement saying it has been the greatest honor of my life to serve the people of New York for the past 10 years. New yorkers resilience, strength and optimism through the most difficult times has inspired me every day. Personally the past two years have been emotionally and mentally trying. I am forever grateful for the opportunity to have worked with such talented and committed colleagues on behalf of our state. Joining us Now Cnn Political Commentator errol lewis. Hes the host of the you decide podcast. No one knows more about politics than you. She resigned overnight, not saying it has been a pleasure to serve with the governor. Not mentioning him by name. What is the big take away . The main take away is that this is an administration in freefall. The top aide, as you describe her, really all the departments report up to her. This is an administration that has basically been decapitated. That has over 2 Billion worth of housing assistance, much needed assistance to people who have not been able to pay their rent over the last year. That money has not been spent. New york is behind all of the states and getting it done. The administration is grinding to a halt and the governor has not been heard from. Has been holed up. Has not resigned. Has not made any clear statements about what is supposed to happen to the state of 20 Million people. And this sort of makes clear that his closest advisors, his Top Aides are just walking away from him. He apparently is not listening to them. Important business as you mentioned is not getting done. This is sort of a victim as well of what we are seeing here. But i just wonder behind the scenes, do you get a sense of what is going on . What is the governor doing . How is he spending his time . Apparently what is happening is that unlike in past situations where the governor went seek the counsel of some really talented aides that hes had over the years, aids in some cases who actually also served his father. Instead of bringing them together and try to sort out what he ought to do, apparently the governor is talking to people oneonone. Is keeping his own counsel. Hes leaving them in individual silos and he is not really hearing what it is they are telling him. Top aides have told him governor your career is over. This is The End. Lets try and sweat this out with dignity and order. And do what is best for the people and for the administration and for your family. He is simply not hearing that. He lives in the executive mansion, he does not have another home. He is losing his aides. The people who are talking to him, they say they are just not getting through to him. He wants to fight this all the way out. The State Legislature has signaled that they are prepared to remove him. And that can happen on a simple majority vote. And he does not have enough votes to survive such a process. So, im not sure what is going through the governors head. But at this point, it is not a matter of if but when. Is there anything that you think could happen . The famous Barry Goldwater Trip to the White House to Richard Nissen who told him it is over which got nixon to resign. Is there anything intervening event between now and when the assembly will inevitably impeach the governor . That Barry Goldwater Meeting has already happened more or less publicly. A top political ally, the speaker of the State Assembly said it is clear to me that he does not have the votes to survive and impeachment vote. And we are going to move forward quickly. That is a paraphrase but that is what they are doing. Theyve given him until friday to turn over any materials that he wants to give them. After which they are going to prepare to cast a vote. That can happen as soon as i week now. Look, i think probably the governors family, matilda cuomo, his mother who is revered and respected. The widow of our former governor. There are people in this world that he has to answer to. Family members in particular who i think might have the wisdom to tell him to take a different course. Because what is happening now is not working for anybody and most of all it is not working for the public. Was a very good point. As you are talking about The Business that remains undone that is so crucial to New Yorkers. Make you so much. Up next, new revelations from congresswoman Alexandria Ocasiocortez. The chilling thought that crossed her mind as rioters stormed the u. S. Capitol. And fast rushing for Waters Floodwater Swap an elevator with three friends trapped inside. The first Hand Account of why they went in and how they made it out. [ ] if you have diabetes, its important to have confidence in the nutritional drink you choose. Try boost glucose control. Tonight cnn will debut a new series called being where our own Dana Bash is down with some of the most powerful and influential people in American Politics and culture. Here is her clip from her interview with Alexandria Ocasiocortez. I think one of the reasons the impact was so doubled that they is because of the misogyny and the racism that is so deeply rooted and animated in that attack on the capital. White Supremacy And Patriarchy were very linked in a lot of ways. Theres a lot of sexualizing of that violence. And i didnt think i was just going to be killed. I thought other things were going to happen to me as well. It sounds like what you are telling me right now is that you didnt only think you were going to die. You thought you were going to be. Yeah, yeah i thought i was. Joining us now to talk more about this is cnn chief political correspondent Dana Bash. That is a stunning revelation by Alexandria Ocasiocortez. It is. And let me give you the context. And the context is that Number One she revealed in a very lengthy instagram live about a month after January 6, that she is a survivor of sexual assault. She told me in the interview a little bit more about that. But that is the context in which she felt so vulnerable, so scared, so fearful. And then on top of that, she, as a person, as a human, has the trauma of being a survivor of sexual assault. So all of that was happening at the same time. And he brought it back. And that is why she was talking about that. In addition breanna, one of the other bits of conversation that we had is about how she is portrayed on conservative media. Particularly fox news. And how when shes talking about sexualizing, a lot of that is making her, not just the enemy, but doing it in a way that highlights her age, her gender and her beauty. Really interesting. It is an important discussion to have terminal doubt. And then in the context of insurrection itself, does it shed new light . Or did she shed new light . Or how do you put this all together with what it was going on inside the building that day. What is important to know is that she was inside her office. Which, for those of us who have been on Capitol Hill for a long time, we know it is known as the cannon building. Which is across the street from the capital but there are tunnels that connect them underneath. And she repeated a story again, that she told on instagram live. Told me about it in a much more dramatic and detailed way that what she was fearful of was somebody banging on her office door. Were otherwise it was very quiet. She was there with just one aide. It turned out the Person Banging was a capitol police officer. She said he never identified himself that way. Which is part of the reason why she was so fearful. But she did talk about how that is linked to so many of the threats that a lot of her colleagues have gotten. Particularly she got. And that was another reason she was so fearful on that day. She spent two years getting threat reports from the capital police say watch out for this person. Watch out for that person. They can be dangerous. And so that is the context and the lens through which she was sitting there on January 6 so terrified. You talk to her about a very pressing political issue when it comes to Alexandria Ocasio cortezs feature which is is she going to challenge the current Senate Majority Leader chuck schumer. Lets listen to what she said. Are you going to challenge Senator Schumer in a primary race . , you know heres the thing. I know it drives everybody nuts. But the way that i really feel about this, and the way i really approach my politics and my political career, is that i do not look at things. And i do not set my course positionally. And i know there are a lot of people who do not believe that. But i really I Cant operate the way that i operate and do the things that i do in politics while trying to be aspiring to other things are calculating to other things. And so all that is to say that i make decisions based on what i think our people need. In my community needs. And so im not commenting. Not know. Not a no. She did talk about the fact Senator Schumer, the Majority Leader has been much more engaged with her recently. Which i said i noticed. I think All Of Us who follow politics and noticed that. She did not rule it out or in. That was so fascinating was that she thinks about the fact, and she understands, that she plays a very specific role. Which she takes unwillingly and happily, eagerly. Which is, she calls the breaking glass. To make a big deal out of this specific issue or a specific policy, because she know she can get attention for it. And her argument there was basically saying, i cannot do that, i cannot be afraid to take a certain position if im thinking about my own personal calculus going away. And we talked about that in the context of potentially running for senate. But also potentially running for president. I just noticed there were a whole lot of words before she got to im not going to comment on that. Which even she was laughing about by the time to say that. Because that is not yes, that is not know, that is not im thinking about it. It was a whole lot of words. It was interesting. Really really interesting Interview I Cant wait to see the whole thing. You can see the rest of that interview with Alexandria Ocasiocortez in the new Cnn Series being. That is tonight at 9 00 eastern. Joining us now is Tony Lou who was in the elevator and capture the video. Tony, we are so glad to see you alive and dry. What happened here . I dont know, to start, we got into the elevator, and we actually wanted to see what the basement looks like. We didnt know what was going to happen, never thought anything of it. As we were going down, the elevator just shook and water just started gushing in its just pouring in there, wow. Yep. What was going through your head when there was water up to your neck in the elevator . I just tried to remain calm, my friends were panicking, so i knew i had to try to do something about it, so i just knew i had to remain calm, i was on the phone with my friend trying to get them to come while my other friends in the litter were on the phone with paramedics try to help us also. In The End, how did you escape . My friends were on the other side of the elevator and they got to me first before the paramedics so they were on the outside pushing the elevator while i was pushing it. How would you rate the quality of decision to get into the elevator to go down to the basement in retrospect . Like i said, we didnt know it was going to happen. We didnt think anything of it. We just thought maybe the water was going to be up to our ankles and we didnt realize what was going to happen. I wonder in retrospect you wish that you had taken the stairs . Because i will certainly learn that lesson from your experience here. Yes, i will have more caution with flooding, ill probably take the stairs. Life goes on, i will still take an elevator like normal but yeah, it was something you dont see every day. It just looks gross, its not exactly the cleanest looking water in the world there. I mean, did you know you are going to get out, was a creeping up on you . Yeah, it was creeping up pretty quick. It didnt really hit me until one got to my stomach and i realized yep, okay this is serious. I need to figure something out quick. At that point, after i got off the phone with my friends, i didnt know what else to do so i started recording it because i didnt know was going to happen after that. Wow. Look, im so glad you and your friends are okay. You know, i appreciate your willingness to come on and talk to us about that experience. It must have been something to go through. Yep, something different for sure. Something you would see in a movie, not real life. It was just surprising. A horror movie. Thanks so much for being with us. Thank you. Every time i watch that section of the film or trailer, i sort of relive this moment in which those of us in the Theater Community just lost all of our jobs, lost everything. So its really meaningful to be back in a Broadway House Tonight and Celebrat E The Return of broadway. Lost everything also with no finish line, which was also difficult for my friends in The Business. They didnt know when it would be back. What do you do when you dont know when you can get your job back . It makes everybody feel secure but i think the most telling thing coming out of korea is in the now 17 months that the corinthian Theater Interesting have been running during the pandemic has been zero cases of audience to audience transmission. Of course korea is not america but that should really tell us something about the safety of the theater. The show must go on, break a leg on the Documentary And Everything else going forward.
