And what may have been missed. All the Talking Heads are talking about alexandria ocasiocortez. Well look at dana bashs indepth interview. The coup is dripping out. Why is this newsworthy more than six months later . Because most people dont know how close the country came. And, because someone might try to do it again. So authors and reporters and House And Senate investigators are all piecing together the events the last winter, and in the words of cnns zach wolf, the full picture of trumps effective coup is only now starting to emerge. Trumps campaign was more intense than we knew at the time. It was more insistent than we knew. For example, there is a Recenting Reporting that trump told his acting attorney general, jeff rosen, just say the country is corrupt and leave the rest to me. He wanted the department to open the door so he could walk through it and remain president even though biden won. Its one of the biggest political stories of our lifetimes. But its in the past. So it might not be getting enough attention, enough play. For example, this weekend were learning that rosen and one of his deputies has given explosive testimony noting that another Department Official tried to weaponize the department to help Trump Stay in power. After hearing from rosen, the Deputy Director said he was, quote, struck by how close the country came to total catastrophe. Thats why were seeing more headlines registering a Coup Attempt in america. Was it a symbolic coup, not well thought out . Sure. But still a Coup Attempt. The committee for January 6 has a lot to piece together about the roles in that attack. And the media needs to step backward to focus on what went wrong and also focusing on the future and how it could help again. With me is Roger Zurich john, first to you. This is one of those backward forward situations, right . There is a democracy that is active every day. When were covering this story, we cant just treat it like its history. Not at all, because its not history. Just because it happened in the past doesnt mean there is still more information to bring about to the present and how it applies to the future. This is a civic obligation. We theneed to engage in a War O Apathy here. We know Donald Trump tried to overturn the election, but we didnt know the extent, the extent where he used the legislative branch to try to overturn the election. It wasnt just overturning an election, it was the attack on overturning our election. Thats an attack on our democracy and there is nothing more serious in our democratic policy than that. We need to dive into our responsibility to make important stories interesting. We need to keep the pressure and the focus on this, because it is urgent and it is not a past concern, it is a present day concern. To that point, david zurich, how should the media make this interesting, bring these stories to light . Brian, this is such an important story, but the problem is its very hard to convince citizens who are not engaged in this life how serious this is. What i mean by that is people, and especially people who might not have a lot of background or pay much attention to this, grew up in Grade School and Middle School and High School looking at events of america and being told about democracy and they think its rock solid. Its there, its out there, it will take Care Of itself. One of the hardest things i have with my columns is trying to reach people and say how dangerous this moment is in american history. Its not just in our lifetimes, its in history. Democracy is totally at stake and the value here, i mean, the importance here, is that Donald Trump is not going away probably in 2022 or 2024, especially. We have to know what he did. You know, this is this whole thing of slogging. Its not even slogging, were kind of walking fast now towards soft fascism with him. Were seeing it in hungary this week with Tucker Carlson. But this is serious, serious stuff when you talk about a Coup And Law enforcement officers died. We have to keep emphasizing that. One of the ways to do that is to keep telling the stories of January 6 over and over and over again, but we also have to somehow educate our public about how fragile democracy is at moments like this. Now lets bring in yasmine in connecting the dots. Fareed was talking about powerhungry victor orban. Look how Tucker Carlsons show was produced. It was a huge Sales Pitch for a country thats the population of michigan and the size of maine. Carlson went there for a week. Like it was the biggest deal in the world. And, of course, he completely failed to note the autocratic character of orbans government, the restrictions of the media there, all the signs of the country backsliding. Carlson gave his show there on saturday. Yasmin, youre an expert on all things hungry. What does it mean when carlson and other right wingers have flocking to Budapest And Ex extolling all these virtues . One thing that struck me about tucker in hungary is he was really keen on eliminating the differences between the united states and hungary. He described one country being an authoritarian state, one where dissent is simply not allowed, where the media is controlled by the Working Class, where politicians enrich themselves in their krcronies. Then he described hungary, which he confessed he didnt know much about, but he described as having a healther Media Ecosystem and a robust political system. To me what this description on its own really kind of boggles the mind of people like myself and others who watch hungary closely. And thats because over the last 12 years of orbans rule, weve really seen a piecemeal democratic backsliding in the country under orban. 90 of the media estimates are under direct control of his party. He seized control of state institutions, installing loyalists as judges, virtually so dire is the situation in hungary right now that during their last elections in 2018, independent Election Observers effectively said that Le Elections in hungary are free but unfair. Theyre effectively held in a Playing Field that privileges the ruling party because there is a blurred line between the state and fedez. What i took away from what Tucker Carlson said to america is he really wants americans to see that brand of autocracy as something desirable to be reached and something we should aspire to. John, you were the first one to bring attention to why this trip is problematic, why this trip to orban is so problematic. What is the problem weeks and months from now . Its an attempt to open the window to say democracy is not an Essential Component to freedom and security. And this is part what makes it dangerous is its part of a general effort to normalize the regime, which, as you heard, restrictive freedoms on almost every front. But on the auspices of trying to confront values, anything is excused. We see this as an importance that couldnt be more dangerous. It draws the line for tuckers infomercial for hungary over the last week and what were learning about Donald Trumps attempt to overturn the election and the people who tried to normalize both. Thats why you have to keep an Eagle Eye on this. If americans fly the american flag and think of themselves as patriots, you cant do so without thinking democracy is overrated and should be restricted in an attempt to hold onto power. We need to educate folks about that, because thats what makes america different. Youre right, its absolutely related to what were seeing now about trumps behavior in the past, and frankly, what hes still doing every day promoting these big lies to try to regain power. Were watching all of the coverage. The theme that came through was it was not just a celebration of orban, it was, boy, do we need a guy like this in this country. Hungary is clean, orderly, says Tucker Carlson, an orderly country. America is a mess. All this rioting in the cities, all the violence. This is him saying this. Its embarrassing to be an american when Joe Biden is president , is what hes saying. This is a push for trump in 2024, the show this week, the series. Thank you, everybody. Lets examine Governor Andrew cuomos relationships with the media, from his fight with editors to the very personal dynamic with his cnn anchor brother, chris. With the development of me too, and also other abuses of power. Reporters have been out in front exposing both of those, and in some cases reporters have experienced both issues with Governor Cuomo firsthand. Casey seilers name is in the Ag Report that came out this week. He joins me now. Casey, thanks for letting me into the newsroom. Thanks for having me on, brian. Im not sure the media expected this to be so damning. What has your week been like . Its been rather hectic, i think its fair to say. As far as the content of the report goes, it was more scathing than most of us thought, i think. I think the most stunning revelations involved the appearance and the narrative around a State Trooper who was added to the governors personal detail despite the fact that she did not have the minimum, you know, years of service to be on the detail at the time, and the governor essentially kind of picked her out after seeing her at an event, and then she ended up being allegedly subjected to the governors harassment. And your newsroom had been investigating this case. As described in the report, a situation where the Governors Aide calls up, has a very heated call, yelling, but then the governor calls you playing mr. Nice guy, is that right . Was it a good Copbad Cop Routine to try to stop your newspaper from reporting about it . This emerged from an inquiry that our investigative Managing Editor and Bureau Chief had made back in december. He had sources who told him, hey, this had indicated an End Run around those service requirements. Brendan asked the State Police and asked the Executive Chamber, cuomos office, to comment, and what resulted was, you know, this incredible pushback in which Melissa Da Rosa called me up on a Friday Night and went kind of from zero to furious in about five seconds. You know, it was an offtherecord conversation, so i dont usually discuss those, but since it is described in the attorney generals report, i think that prohibition has been lifted. And as she herself noted in her testimony, she told me that it was incredibly sexist to even ask the question. I responded with a line that i have heard brendan use a number of times, which is, dont judge us by the questions we ask, judge us by the stories we print in the paper. And it was such a loud argument that i was working out of the attic, of course, during the pandemic and had been for many months at that point. My wife came upstairs to the landing as if to say, is everything all right here . I got off the phone with her after a very unpleasant exchange, and the governor called, and the governor was as close as he gets to peechaches cream. It was, indeed, a sense of getting a bad cop and then a good cop. But of course we later learned that both the State Police and the Executive Chamber provided us with false information about the circumstances under which that female trooper was added to the detail. And the State Polices response on that was, i think its fair to say, extremely lame and the Executive Chamber has not yet responded. Of course, its not illegal to lie to the press, but its not nice. Its immoral. Is this how it normally works in albany, screaming matches and then sweet talk and lying to the press . Is this par for the course, or is what Governor Cuomo and his aides, is this behavior unusual . No, it is not unusual. It is not constant. As with any relationship, there is an ebb and flow, right . I would say its definitely fair to say that i, like many of the hardworking journalists who cover the new York State capitol, i would imagine everyone has been yelled at multiple times by Cuomo Press Office officials or top aides to the governor and probably by the governor himself as well. Why was this tolerated for so long . I believe it was one of the governors top aides who said to if memory serves, a connecticut gubernatorial Commission Er a few years ago ad it was kind of a famous quote. We have two speeds here, get along and kill. That was a revealing statement, and i think its an accurate description of the kind of first page of the cuomo playbook, which is that defense needs to be swift and it needs to be scorched earth. So im wondering if the Governor Cuomo scandal and now what appears to be his downfall is evidence of the importance of strong news in State Capitols, that we need as many journalists as possible in State Capitols like albany . Yes, absolutely, without a doubt, 100 in all u. S. States and territories. The hollowing out of traditional media and the fact that it is expensive and difficult to mount investigative news, i think this is an example of the importance of all of that good work. I consider myself very lucky, you know, to work at an institution that Prizes Watchdog Journalism and always has. Heres some breaking news. On monday, his newsroom, the Times Union and cbs will jointly have the first interview with the Cuomo Accuser who up until now has only been known as executive Assistant Number 1. Cnn management has made two things clear to him, one, that he Cant Talk about his brother Andrew Cuomo on tv, and two, that he cant participate in any more Strategy Sessions with the Governors Aides. If youre wondering why chris has remained silent about the scandal, that is why. This week i have been doing Media Reporting on the angle of this scandal, which means talking to staff at cnn about Chris Cuomo, the Governors Brother at all times. These people im talking with are my colleagues, of course, and i assured them they can speak honestly and candidly. What i found is a more implicated story than you might think. This has been a conundrum for K Cnn that has more to it. Some think it was wrong for chris to interview his brother. A famous governor in the news, who went to the highest heights last year and now to the lowest lows. Selfinflicted wounds. And a brother who just wants to do his job, just wants to anchor his show. But can he . Thats the key question. This Week Chris showed that he can. He tuned out the Family Drama and led compelling interviews on prime time all dealing with what has to be one of the hardest periods of his adult life. Viewers wanted to see him on tv, and thats not a totally irrelevant factor. Chris had the highest ratings on tuesday, on wednesday, and again on thursday. On those shows, chris made no reference to his brothers troubles, and that is by design. The manager has been clear about his position. He is not covering the governor on tv, period. He is not talking about it at all. Believe me, i tried. I wanted an interview and i was turned down. I personally believe he should speak out when the time is right. Chris should share his Point Of View. Hes part of the story. The ags report confirms that the governor was talking to his aides about how to handle the allegations of harassment this year. T he apologized to critics for it. Some say he should have been suspended or even fired. But telling a host to hang out at the pool for a couple weeks is not acknowledgment. Its b. S. When they send the governor on vacation during a scandal. Saying what they did was inappropriate, that is an actual punishment. Chris should be asked about all this. He should be grilled like anyone else. Thats what numerous staffers at cnn told me this week. On the outside, some of the critics who slammed him about his interview with his brother about covid. You can decide if you agree or disagree with this. The logic on the part of management is whatever chris says about the allegations on his brother, he will be picked apart. He will be accused of using it as a spin for his family. He should stay out of it. He should do the job the viewers want him to do. Plus, cnn is so much bigger than any one anchor. What really matters most is how cnn as a global News Outlet covers the governors alleged crimes. Now, i asked around about this all week, and i found absolutely no sign that chris having a show at 9 00 affects the rest of the day. If anything, its the opposite. Some staffers have speculated the coverage has been extra tough On Cnn because of the scrutiny. I thinK Cnns coverage has been scathing. It has been appropriately in depth because this is the governor of one of the largest states in the country in the middle of a firestorm. I want you to know that its not like chris is hanging out in the bureau newsroom, hanging out with the reporters covering the story. He works several floors away. He doesnt have that kind of interaction. Still, there is an optics problem, and thats why im dedicating so much time to this on the show. This entire story looks awkward for cnn. As one staffer said, the lines are just too blurred when it comes to chris. Some colleagues are ticked off at him. But lots of cnners also expressed support for him and respect for his anchoring skills. And, look, differences of opinion in a newsroom is a good thing. It is a good thing that people have differing opinions and theyre talking about it and its being discussed. The society of professional Journalists Code of ethics instructs journalists to avoid conflicts of interest, real or perceived, and to disclose unavoidable conflicts. Clearly family is unavoidable. In this case the conflict is revealed right in the show, cuomo prime time. But thats not the issue. The issue is whether chris can continue to do his job, continue to be trusted by the audience. Clearly the owners of cnn think so. But thats up to you. Thats up to the people who tune in or not every night. Trust in this business is earned every day, inch by inch, minute by minute, show by show. So heres one thing i know for sure. Chris is going to have a surreal birthday On Monday. He always takes his Birth Week off. He always takes it off work. But this year hes going to be absent while his brother is fighting for his political life trying to stop his impeachment. And viewers will say chris has been canceled when they dont see him on air On Monday. Dont believe it. I checked with his staffers and they confirmed he booked this off a month ago. It is an actual vacation, but its coming at a really, really difficult time for chris personally. Thats something that many sources brought up to me. Whether they agree or disagree with managements decision, a lot of people feel a lot of sympathy for him. And that is significant that you all should know. As for vacation, it seems like everyone could use one of those right about now. Now our coverage of this story continues in the nightly reliable sources newsletter. Dana sat down with aoc for a very indepth interview and a personal interview. There is news from fox i want to get to, but first lets look at what thats all about. Dana is joining me for a preview. Bean is supposed to be a different kind of interview show. What are you trying to accomplish, dana . You said it perfectly, brian. I couldnt have said it better myself. Part of the reason why i love my job here in washington is because i do get to ask the tough questions of people who are in the news. But also as being a journalist and being around and getting to know lawmakers and know other people of influence, you realize that there is more to the story, often, than the time that you have in those critical and very important interviews. So who is the person behind the sound bite, as you described it . This is something i wanted to do for a very long time, let it breathe, as we like to say in the tv business, and give viewers and our audience more time to get to know the people who are in the headlines that they read every day. And what their lives are really like. Alexandria Cocasiocase Yo Ocasiocortez is attacked a lot. Lets hear what she said about that. Do you watch Fox News . Do you watch what they say about you . Not all the time. Once in a while i do, and i think that its really fascinating. I actually find it to be really, really fascinating because it reveals a lot about the subconscious of folks that are crafting these narratives, and they very often are speaking to these very subconscious narratives about women or about people of color or about latinos or latinas or Working Class people. These characters that are developed are not really personal. They are societal. So you can watch that and take yourself, you, the human being, out of it and look at it almost from an academic Point Of View . Yeah. Actually, the right wing that seems like it would be pretty hard to do. You are a human being. The harder one is the critiques from within the party. Ly so tinteresting, dana, she says its harder to hear the left wing criticize her. Yes, and she talks about in this special the fact that it was more difficult than people realized, again, as a person, as a colleague, coming into the united States Congress to be given the Cold Shoulder by fellow democrats because she beat a very wellliked democrat, joe crowley, and thats how she came to washington. But on the fox situation, and more broadly the conservative media, brian, what was so interesting was that she talked about what she called a through line between the kind of Fixation And Denigration and all the words you can think of that are synonyms for her and others, and threats against her, real threats against her, not to mention what happened on January 6. A through line from all of that. Thats really interesting. Whats your oneline interviewing Technique Or Tip for people who are watching who are interviewers or want to be . Just listen to what people say. You might have a whole list of questions, and i certainly do, and i know you do as well when you prepare, but sometimes the person youre interviewing says things you dont expect, and go with it because thats when its most interesting. We hear about the covid surges happening among the unvaccinated, we hear about the carnage in hospitals. But are we actually seeing it . Are outlets getting enough access to hospitals . Are local outlets actually able to show the harsh reality of covid among the unvaccinated . Thats a question for my guest who is with me for this information. Dr. Nisha mehta is here with us. She runs two facebook groups with thousands of members and she often sees whats happening before it makes national news. Doctor, whats missing from the news right now . Is it the suffering . Thanks for having me. I think its so important that the media does cover that onthegrounds coverage. I think what were seeing from the immemedia these days and wh physicians are expressing frustration about is were hearing the same Stuff Weve heard about the last 18 months, which is good to enforce, but it doesnt necessarily change behavior, right . What we see and what we are talking about in our communities is people change what they do that they can relate to, and people are not seeing we almost wish we could take people on rounds in the icu with us or have them walk around and listen to the stories of people who are there. Because really what were Seeing In Last March and april and what were seeing today is very different in the demographics after 18 months in a Health Care System thats really tired after having dealt with this for the last 18 months. It used to be that people thought about older people and people with chronic medical conditions in these units, and now because those patients are now vaccinated, there are breakthrough infections, but were not seeing them with morbidity and mortality. But what we are seeing is pregnant patients filling up the icus or people in their 20s, 30s, 40s who have Blood Clots and strokes that people do identify with. The patients there are telling us, i wish i had made different decisions we are seeing these interviews. I think its remarkable to see these Bedside Interviews from Peoples Cell phones who say, i wish i had gotten the shot. We are seeing that. But we dont see a lot of the videos from inside the icu. Is that because of Hippa Restrictions that we cant bring media in . There are pr issues related on the Hospital Side of things, that are confidentiality issues in terms of patient care, and the systems are stretched right now. We are down a lot of people in a lot of these Hospital Systems right now and weve got physicians that are talking about being not only a physician but also the receptionist and maybe also the person taking an xray once in a while. So whats happening is i dont think there is a lot of focus on getting the story out there, and there is also a lot of concern about the from a public health perspective, i think people respond better if they see those stories and see, hey, we dont have any beds right now. Even if i had a Heart Attack or a stroke or got into a Car Accident right now, i would be waiting until there was care available to me. Weve got Hospital Systems diverting because they dont have access to oxygen even because theyre on diversion. Or maybe they dont have enough staffing so even if they have a bed, theyre not able to give it up. Those are the stories people need to be seeing so they understand, number one, people in these icus could look like me and have stories like me and are changing their mind. People outside are saying publicly they dont like vaccines or are vaccine hesitant have heard of situations that they identify with and theyre coming to their physicians and asking to get vaccinated. We all live in these Echo Chambers where people have made up their mind over the last 18 months on how they feel about the situation. Until they have people see things that they identify with that encourage them to reach out and ask for more data, it doesnt held very much to have a Press Conference that reiterates thank you very much for being here. Thats the unvaccinated, getting sick, overwhelming hospitals. Lets talk about the vaccinated in places like provincetown and how these outbreaks are covered. Andrew sullivan is the acclaimed Writer And Blogger from provincetown. I want to talk to him about his experience in provincetown. Theres this outbreak, covid cluster, gets a lot of attention in july. What did the media miss about provincetown . Almost everything. Its extremely normal right now. Something like 3 positivity. What happened is that in two weeks we had 60,000 people descend after a year of not partying at all on a tiny town with 900 yearround Mailing Addresss and overwhelm the place at a time when it was cold and rainy, so everyone was crammed inside. It was like a designed Stress Test for seeing whether it could break through. The truth is, the End Result with that was seven people ended up in the hospital after 60,000 people and No One died. There were some people who got a little sick, friends of mine, like my nextdoor neighbor, but it was like a little cold, a mild few days flu. It was not a big story. This amazing story of all the gays coming to this little town and exploding the virus, it was just too good a story for journalists to resist. The result has been this town has been shellacked, absolutely knocked sideways. People have kcanceled in ways that are irrational and the businesses here are suffering terribly. I hope people will realize this is not a danger zone. It is extraordinarily safe here. You write in your new book Out On A Limb with selected writings from decades of your work, you wrote about your Hiv Positive status and living with a virus. Now, here we all are, trying to figure out how to live with a very different virus, with covid19. Its not going to go away entirely. Were not going to get to covid zero. What are you telling your readers of your Sub Stack about what i means to live with a virus . It means recognizing that we humans and viruses, we inhabit the same planet. Its in their interest not to kill us actually, because if they kill us too quickly, they cant transmit. So this actual new Delta Variant is actually performing as you would expect. Its not killing people more, its just transmissing more. 28 years i have lived with a virus in my body. It isnt gone. Its hiding there in the bone marrow. Ive been able to repress it dramatically so it doesnt affect me. Then i go about my life and i live. You can, when youre grappling with a virus, the only thing that matters in my life is to kill the virus. There are many other things that matter in your life. The gold is to get back to it. The goal is to live with these things, not to have some false triumph over them. Vaccination really will help people get back to normal in a way that we can clear our minds and realize were not really at any great risk. We really arent. Thats hard to believe. But we arent. If were vaccinated if were vaccinated. Two countries in one. One that is bleak and disturbing, and the other that is safe. We need to address that. And that contrast can only help, right . Help people realize, get vaccinated. Right. Andrew, thank you. The new collection is Out On A Limb. It is excellent. I recommend it. Andrew, thank you.
