Assured that the u. S. Would return home with more Gold M metals than any other country. And the u. S. Left it late. Yeah, a complete team effort. Track and field grabbed seven golds, then sunday u. S. Womens basketball captured their 7th straight Gold Medal. And then the Volleyball Team winning their first eever Gold Medal and there were tons of tears on the court after they scored that last point. The u. S. Had meddled five times before making the Gold Medal match three different times, but this the first time the women were able to capture the gold and pretty cool, it is also what got Team Usa Over The Top in the Gold Medal count. The u. S. Basketball team is a dynasty, they captured their seventh straight Gold Medal which tied the longest streak in any olympic Team Sport beating japan in the final. Brittney griner Setting A Gold Medal Game Record Scoring 30 points to lead the team. And the Usa Basketball legends playing their final game together for the team, they go out winning their fifth Gold Medal which is the most by any Player Man or woman in olympic basketball history. So the u. S. Hasnt lost a game in the olympics since 1992, 55 wins in a row, half of the Team Wasnt even born the last time they lost a game. Just an incredible written from the Womens Basketball team. And elliott also winning the marathon On The Last Day of the competition by more than 80 sep seconds, largest margin since 1972. Kipchoge is the oldest to win the Mens Marathon since 1984, he now has four olympic medals. He is the World Record Holder for a marathon and in 2019 became the first man to run a marathon in under 2 hours but it wasnt a record because it was done in nonrace conditions. Now, today it was 81 humidity in tokyo but he still finished in 2 8 38. And that is 4 54 per mile on. A. Ju on average. And just incredible. And so the united states will finish the olympics with the most Gold Medals of any team for the third straight Summer Games. U. S. Also going to finish with the total medals for the seventh straight Summer Games. And kim, almost done there in tokyo. Just one event left, it is Mens Water Polo going on right now between greece and serbia. And then it will be a wrap for the Tokyo Olympics. Thanks so much, andy scholes. Appreciate it. And here in the u. S. , the Delta Variant is driving Case Numbers to their highest levels since february. The u. S. Seven Day Average is more than 100,000 new cases per day. This comes as just over 50 of the u. S. Population is now fully vaccinated. And florida seems to be getting the worst of it, the Sunshine State has the highest number of hospitalizations per capita nationwide and also the highest weekly number of new covid cases since the pandemic began. Despite raging Case Numbers, Governor Desantis is holding firm rejecting the idea of a Mask Mandate in schools. And he is using it as an issue to inflame his supporters in the covid culture wars. But desantis is not going unchallenged. Two lawsuits have been filed against him over his Executive Order banning Mask Mandates. Florida officials are also criticizing a lack of transparency on covid figures saying the governor is only making the situation worse by poking fun at cdc recommendations. What they did, they took down their dashboard, they started reporting weekly. Im constantly asking for information, it used to be very forthcoming and what i typically do, we give it to our residents. When a resident sees that more people are hospitalized, that more people are getting infected when they see other kinds of metrics, they act accordingly. Being forewarned is being forearmed. But i think just to make a political point he decided that he will make fun of this. And by The Way, his Campaign Website is literally making fun of the cdc and fauci. How can you do that in the middle of a pandemic when you are hoping that people will follow the rules that medical experts ask them to . This is pretty outrageous and there is no question it is increasing our positivity, our hospitalizations and obviously our deaths. Earlier i spoke with chief of Infectious Diseases at Johns Hopkins Allchildrens Hospital in florida and i asked her about the rise in cases in her state. First thing is that this Delta Variant is just extremely contagious. Far more contagious than the variants prior. And the other factor and i think why weve been seeing a lot of patients in our pediatric hospital is because this is largely an epidemic right now of the unvaccinated and a lot of children are not old enough to get the vaccine. So that is another reason why were busy. The other thing too is that lot of the Infection Prevention strategies that we had been using earlier in the Pandemic H like masking and physical distancing has gotten lax after a summer where we actually saw cases drop. So i think if you sort of put all those things together, you know, you have the recipe for a very busy season. And the other thing is even our adults are probably not vaccinated to the rate we would like, although were getting better. The u. S. Is again fighting to balance the dangers of the pandemic with the hopes of returning to normal. That despite the Delta Variant causing a massive surge nationwide, some 700,000 bikers are gathering for an annual motorcycle rally. That is far more than last year, yet out of last years smaller crowd the cdc documented at least 649 new covid cases as far away as florida and maine. So as the daily caseload grows in the u. S. , anger is growing in europe over new covid health passes, essentially proof that someone is vaccinated or had a recent negative Covid Test and some governments are making it mandatory to go to to public places. Barbie, it seemed like these protests were the biggest so far. Thats right, over a quarter million people on the streets of france. And if they are protesting the Vaccination Requirements into restaurants, they are probably not vaccinated and many not wearing masks as well. And this is as france is battling a fourth wave with new caseloads upwards of 20,000 a day. This is about civil liberties. They dont want the vaccines to be mandated. And by requiring to enter a restaurant or museum, a lot of people see that as an infringement on their rights and that is bringing them out into the streets. And in italy, protests as well. And some demonstrators there are using very controversial some would say disturbing imagery to try to make their point. And the protests in italy are far smaller than those in france, but those out there are very angry. And some were using The Star Of David Badges to claim that they are akin to holocaust victims saying that they are not vaccinated on these badges. Very disturbing. And weve seen tiny pockets of protests across the country. A lot of Restaurant Owners here dont like the idea that they have to be the enforcers, they are the ones that have to check the Q Code of the green pass to allow people in, they are the ones that have to do sort of the dirty work when it comes to these vaccine mandates to get inside of restaurants. But health authorities here say this is the only way out of it, this is the only way not to have further lockdowns, this is the only way to stop the spread by if you want to go to the restaurant, you just need to have a vaccination. If you want to go to a museum, you need to be vaccinated. They say that is a small price to pay to not go back to where we were a year ago. Yeah, some u. S. Cities experimenting with similar things here. Bar barb, thank you. And in britain, experts are trying to wrap their head around a trend there. They expected the numbers to Sky Rocket after regulations were scrapped but instead the 7 Day Average has declined. So is there a lesson for others . Were joined by a global Health Expert at University College london. Thanks for being with us. So what weve seen there in the uk, Case Numbers falling after dropping restrictions especially in the context of that highly contagious Delta Variant, it seems counter intuitive. Do we know what is behind this . Certainly i think this has been a good surprise when it comes to covid and we havent had too many of those. There has been a lot of Bad News in regards to more transmissible, more dangerous variants. But in this case i think there are several factors at play. We know this is a real decline because the trend usually f follows that there are fewer hospitalizations. But particularly over the summer period, in the uk there have beenincentive to get tested in the first place because we dont have the same Support Systems in place for those who are selfemployed in other countries. And during the holiday period, there was also concerns that perhaps people were avoiding coming forward because of the implication on their holiday plans, et cetera. Particularly mild cases. But also what weve seen in the uk is although weve had our Freedom Day and legal requirements for certain behaviors have now been dropped, weve also had many businesses and other our Health Secretary came forward and said that indoor places where it is crowded, on the tube, et cetera, people will be wearing masks. So i think that behavior didnt all of a sudden switch off where people dropped masks all together and just threw caution to the wind. I think there is still the Behavior Element being encouraged again in restaurants and in other environments, especially if you are going to ride public transport, that is still a requirement by our tfl, the transport body, even if the government has a separate view. So i think a lot of the local restrictions continue to have a profound effect, but we are also looking at the Vaccine Wall holding firm. And i think that that is the key thing is to ensure that that continues and we target the hesitant groups as much as possible to prevent future vdela variants. So you mentioned a key thing, vaccinations. Because when were comparing here looking here in the u. S. , were hoping that we wont see the catastrophic numbers linked to the Delta Variant that some are predicting if we dont get the Vaccination Rates up, and that our Infection Rates will mirror the decline we saw there in the uk, but im wondering if that is a false hope because our Vaccination Rates are much lower. And also it depends on the spread. And in the u. S. There are high regions where the Vaccination Rate is much lower than other areas. And that in particular means that you can have more aggressive outbreaks in those regions. And so i think all countries need to be looking at their strategies on vaccination to help where the supply even is available to continue with that. And i think it is also interesting to compare to the most highly vaccinated country in the world, that being israel, and how they again reintroduced face masks because even with high Vaccination Coverage due to the delta. Delta has changed the equation. So even the most highly vaccinated country in the World Isnt throwing all caution to the wind. They are making their Risk Assessment here and saying that we want to protect those gains made. And the u. S. Has made a lot of gains, but they can quickly be lost too if that progress doesnt continue and if really complicated challenges that are multifactorial, it is you need to have expertise from all disciplines coming into these policies particularly when we look at why people with r. Shunning the vaccines in the first instance. But that is a big clue towards how quickly things can change and how our progress made so far isnt permanent. Im youcurious, is the Delta Variant itself teaching us anything more about how one models or predicts how disease is spread or is the lesson here basically just a humbling reminder that there is really just so much we really dont know . Absolutely. I think the modelling itself in the uk revealed that there is so much uncertainty and that that should be a humbling experience, that we should be prepared with Contingency Plans for worst case scenarios. While also ensuring that were paving The Way forward to ensure that countries can reap as much activity as previously. And that is a difficult balance to strike, but weve seen at a zero Sum Equation where it is one or the other. Actually in the uk for the longest time, it did cost us more economically and we had one of the highest Death Rates globally. So pitting one against the other i think has been a mistake that the w. H. O. And other organizations have highlighted. It doesnt have to be one or the other. We should continue to ensure that we have the appropriate support in place and empowering local Health Bodies to work with those communities where the challenges lie. And really getting the public to understand that the Delta Isnt necessarily the worst of the lot yet. It is thus far, but if we dont continue where the recommendations going forward, we could see again something much worse than delta. Well said. And hopefully well learn from the experiences there although the political battles were having here over masks and vaccinations suggest that that is a big challenge. Thank you so much for being with us. Appreciate it. Thank you. The Olympic Flame will soon be extinguished. Well take you to tokyo ahead of the Closing Ceremony. Plus afghanistan is hoping elite soldiers can take back most of a key city from the taliban. The balance, when we come back. There is a major fight underway in afghanistan after the taliban seized most of kunduz city. The majority of the city has fallen but not the airport. The Defense Ministry says elite afghan commandos are trying to retake the territory. If kunduz falls, it will be the third rprovincial Capital Loss o the militants. Cl Clarissa Ward filed this report. Reporter the situation in afghanistan is rapidly unraveling which is why you saw the u. S. Embassy come out and urge all americans to leave the country. And this comes on the heels of the taliban taking control of two provincial capitals, this is a big deal, the first but by no means unfortunately probably the last at least three other cities are under imminent threat. We spoke to the icrc, the international red cross, they help a hospital in kandahar that said in the first six months of this year alone, they saw more than 2300 weapon wounded patients. That is more than double the amount they saw in the first six months of last year. Weve also heard from the new u. N. Envoy to afghanistan, she warned that if the international community does not act soon, afghanistan could be a potential catastrophe with few if any parallels this century. And we spoke about afghanistan with Ashley Jackson, author of a book about life under the taliban, negotiating survival, and we asked her if people in afghanistan actually support the taliban or if they are being forced to support their rule or die. As you do in any civil war, you have two afghanistans. You have people predominantly in the cities who benefited from the international intervention, jobs and school and aid. But you also have a lot of people in the countryside, Alled Warlords we empowered after 9 11 went after them, it gave the taliban an excuse to come back and it is those people in the rural areas that the taliban now controls who i think have born the brunt of the conflict not only taliban violent but u. S. Led air strikes, night raids. And they are absolutely exhausted. They dont support then. They just want a break, they just want peace. That was Ashley Jackson at the overseas development institute. The u. S. Is slamming the latest moves by Nicaraguas President to cling on to power. The government of President Ortega effectively banned another party from running. And for months it has been detaining political rivals. The president s wife is also his vice president. Secretary of state Antony Blinken says these latest actions mean nicaraguas upcoming November Election has lost all credibility. Two controversial right wing figures met this week this hungary. Tucker carlson capped his visit with a Speech Saturday Heaping praise on viktor orban. Carlson is the face of the right Wing Support for his regime who which has targeted the media and lgbtq community. Also a Touch Stone for European Nationalists those carlson praised to which america should as aspire. I know a robust political system when i see one. I think that america is the greatest country in the world. I will always think that. But dont Tell Me it is freer than hungary because that is a lie. Hungary restricted the sales of Lgbtq Theme books on friday. The first decree related to a law passed which banned materials seen as promoting Homosexuality And Gender reassignment. Thousands turned out at Budapests Pride March to protest against the law. Several rights groups have also denounced it and the European Commission has brought legal action against it. Orban has grown increasingly hard lined since taking office in 2010. Back in 2013, the parliament changed the constitution to increase its power. The rules limited the powers of constitutional court, one of the few institutions that would stand up to him. Then came a law that set up courts overseen directly by the justice minister. The Orban Regime has systemically dismantled end media forcing some outlets to close while packing others with supporters. These and other moves led European A Parliament to Sanction Hungary for Flouting Rules on Democracy And Hungary rejects the accusations. As Tucker Karl so er Carlson Bridge it, one historian says it is important to highlight what carlson is not telling his viewers. It is concerning that he is gushing about this automatic ttoe krat, but interesting what he is not saying. He is not saying that orban as of 2020, he rules by decree, so he is a dictator. And other thing he is not talking about is the virtual extinction of Press Freedom in 2018 over 500 media outlets, quote, donated assets to a foundation run by orbans allies. And you couldnt have a private network like fox that wasnt under Government Control or an ally. So it is equally revealing what he is not telling fox viewers. That is ruth Ben Ghat there. And tokyo is preparing to hand the Olympic Abobaton over paris. And in california, crews are battling the largest wildfires in state history. The latest ahead. Team usa is ready for the olympic games. And so are mike and eddie Show Me the olympics. They easily catch every single event with the Awardwinning Xfinity Voice remote. Tokyo Summer Games are down to their final hours before the Olympic Flame is extinguished and everyone goes home. Blake essig is standing by in tokyo. I know organizers are playing things close to the vest about the Closing Ceremony. But what can you tell us . Reporter it ends where it all started right here at the new National Stadium. But we dont know much about the Closing Ceremony but i can tell you that they have been rehearsing all day. And what we do know is that the theme is the world we share, organizers say the idea being that even if the World Cant be together, we can all share the moment and open the door to a brighter future. And as we take a step back and reflect on the past two weeks, these olympic games have been anything but normal. We knew that would be the case. And here on the ground, it has been a tale of two cities. On the one hand the constant protests and fierce opposition to these games really hasnt changed. But at the same time many have tuned in to watch the games on tv and gather for any opportunity to experience the olympics in person. If you just Take A Look behind me, there are hundreds of people streaming in and out around the National Stadium just for the chance to take a picture with the Olympic Stadium before the lights go out here in tokyo. But rather than a shift in support for the games as a whole, many ive spoken to have said that they tuned in specifically to assume the atha support the athletes who work so hard to be here. And even though covid cases in the bubble have been relatively low, there is a surge in Case Count here in tokyo and around the country. Despite a state of Emergency Order being put in place, medical professionals say they are not taking the current crisis seriously and im told that is because the Mix Messaging by the government asks people to stay home and businesses to close early but at the same time going ahead with the olympics. The Prime Minister has said that the olympics has not resulted in the increase of covid19 infections but medical professionals warn as a result of the olympics increasing the flow of people that cases could triple here in the next couple weeks. Before i let you go, youve been reporting on these games seemingly nonstop. So as they come to a close, what struck you the most about what you saw firsthand there, what impressions will stick with you . Reporter you know, kim, having covered the olympics once before in russia as well, this was a completely different olympic experience, i can tell you that. The fact that no spectators were in the stands, the Buzz And Excitement just simply wasnt here. And never was here. One i think this that i will say is that having had the opportunity to go and sit inside these stadiums while events were taking place, you know, the potential, what tokyo 2020 could have been, it is really sad. It is really sad that the people of Japan Werent able to be inside the stadium to witness the games in person. They really everything was set up for these games to be a wonderful experience and because of the pandemic, that never happened. Tokyo 2020 will always be remembered as the pandemic games. And there was so much potential for what could have been. Still some great stories came out of these games. Blake essig, thanks so much. We want to take a closer look at one of the recordbreaking Athletes To come out these games. Sprinter Allyson Felix is now the most decorated Track And Field star in Olympics History surpassing even carl lewis. She won her 11th Career Medal in the Relay Event saturday. So i spoke with Christine Brennan about felixs remarkable career. Here she is. The united states has been a Track And Field nation for decades. And so for Allyson Felix at the age of 35 in her last olympics as a mother now as an advocate for moms who are athletes, as someone who has talked about social injustice, racial injustice, really finding her voice, for her to also have these two final medals, bronze in the 400 and then that majestic Gold Medal in the 4 x 400, it was an amazing ending for her career. And so delve into her off the field items. Why is she such an icon to moms everywhere . As you know the u. S. Women continue to dominate at these olympics. Close to 60 of the u. S. Medals, 58 of the medals won by the united states were won by women and increasingly these are veteran olympians, and they come back for games after games. And Allyson Felix is 35 years old. So these are women who have had careers because of title ix, a law that opened the floodgates for women and girls to play sports 50 years ago, they have had opportunities to play in their teens and 20s and keep going in their 30s. And invariably some will want to have children. And all of a sudden nike, her sponsor, now nike says no, we are not going to pay you while you are pregnant and on maternity leave. And she fought that and she won. Nike and other shoe companies, other big names in therelented we need to respect the rights of mothers who continue to compete. That was Christine Brennan speaking to us earlier from tokyo. And the u. S. Senate is inching closer Tos Paing ssing massive Infrastructure Bill. After months of negotiations, 18 are not senators joined democrats to shut down debate on the bill. Senators are confident that it will pass but when is still unclear. Lauren fox has the latest from capitol hill. Reporter well, senators are back in washington, they had hoped that they could finish the bipartisan Infrastructure Bill this weekend. But were seeing that senator bill haggerty, a republican from the state of tennessee, is digging in his heels not allowing this bill to move any faster through the u. S. Senate. He says that he is going to require the senate to exhaust the entire amount of debate time. What that means for people back home is that instead of seeing this Bill Pass over the weekend, you can expect that this debate is going to go into early next week. That is of course if they cant get some kind of consensus and convince haggerty to pull back on his threat. So at this point, the expectation is this bipartisan Infrastructure Bill is going to pass, it is a matter of when it passes, not if it passes. But it will take a little bit more time. After that, democrats are hoping to move forward with their democratic only Bundget Bill an then a vote on voting rights legislation, then they will depart for the august recess. So a lot of moving parts, but the Bottom Line is that this bipartisan Infrastructure Bill will get pushed off to just a few more days. On capitol hill, for cnn, im lauren fox. Still ahead, a race against time as crews work to contain the massive Dixie Fire currently raging in california. Well take a closer look at the conditions they are facing, after this. The Dixie Fire has burned to nearly 700 square miles so far, that is more than twice the size of new york city. It is now the third largest wildfire in california history. Right now it is only 21 contained. That number was 35 just two days ago but officials say the fire has groan Sigrown Signific since then. And cries yiyies crews are also more unpredictable conditions. The fires themselves are getting more erratic. I spoke with Serena Baker about the conditions crews are facing. Here she is. When i first started in the federal government, my boss told me you will never meet a harder working federal employee than someone who is a wild land firefighter. If you can imagine swinging a huge blade and you are scraping all the line, scraping all the vegetation off, you are down to bare mineral ground, that is what you need in order to try to create that Fire Break to try to Fuel Break to try to break that fire from going across. So it is very challenging work. You know, ive talked to a lot of our hot shot crews and our Hand Crews and they say that the camaraderie of the Team Environment and really feeling like the work that they do matters. And makes a difference to the american people is really what inspires them to do such challenging work. And Derek Van Dam is joining us with a closer look at the wildfires currently raging across the western u. S. What is the latest . Hope that they will get better weather to sort of mitigate this. Unfortunately not in the near term. And this drought that is gripping the western u. S. Is just seriously exceptional. Youve got to see some of the graphics im about to show you. Satellites showing the smoke drifting from the West Coast into the east coast. There is the exceptional drought. We focus in on california, the Dixie Fire over 447,000 acres burned, only 21 containment. This makes it the third largest wildfire in the state of californias history. That is saying something. Look at how the drought has progressed. This is in august of 2019, so more or less the same time two years ago. No Droughten Canss conditions. Fast forward one year, severe Drought Conditions in the san francisco bay. And then now it is encompassing much of southern california. And this is having major impacts on the water supply. Take lake oroville, its lowest level ever recorded, it has forced some of the hydroelectric plants to actually shut down. You can see Satellite Imagery before and after the drought taking place. And you can see just how much this basin continues to dry up. The Water Levels here are at Record Level lows. And of course that is impacting the hydroelectric Power Plant as i mentioned, shut off for the first time in history. And lets Take A Look at other stats here because this is interesting, not only is it propering a bad quality of air, but also that Air And Smoke is drifting well to the east of where the fires are actually occurring. In fact we have hazardous conditions for california all The Way to denver, colorado. Look at the smog that blanketed the skies in denver, yesterday, this is on saturday, they had unhealthy Air Conditions for that particular Air And Air Quality Index of 167. They have a poor Air Quality Alert in store for the day today, much of the Rocky Mountains in the to Central Valley Of California and Pacific Northwest as well. And in greece, they are dealing with the same kind of disaster. This heavy Lifting Helicopter produces over 10,000 liters of water dropping that trying to help extinguish some of the flames there. They have a very high Level Risk Level four out of five for greece, Exception Alal Drought Conditions there as well and wildfires burning out of control. So active both in North America and europe as well. Thanks so much, Derek Van Dam. As he mentioned, hot air and strong winds are adding fuel to dozens of wildfires in greece and fires in athens have already caused massive devastation. Elinda labropoulou is joining me from a town outside the capital city. Im struck by the devastation behind you. What is the latest on the efforts to contain those fires that have been raging for almost a week now . Reporter as you can see the devastation behind me is immense. The good news is that the fire in athens has practically been put out, but of course there are fears of the fire rekindling. So authorities are on high alert, they are everywhere, but citizens have returned to their homes. Weve spoken to a lot of people who are trying to put their lives back together, see what remains. And there is great concern about the forest that has burned, this beautiful area that so many people refer to as the lungs of athens. At the same time big fires continue to burn across the country particularly on the island of evia, greeces second largest island. And very large part of this island has already burned, citizens have been evacuated at least 39 villages have been evacuated and it seems to be that people are now heading to the coastal area. So if they need to get out, they will be moved by boats. Again authorities there are on standby and more than A Thousand people have already been moved. And unfortunately were hearing that winds are picking up, so as a result things are getting more critical as well. Not good news there. All right, elinda labropoulou, thank you so much.
