Substantial increase in coronavirus cases among children and teenagers. The American Academy Of Pediatrics reporting that nearly 72,000 Children Caught Coronavirus Last week. That is an 84 increase over the week before. It is a five fold increase since the end of june. And the timing couldnt be worse. The Delta Variant is on a Collision Course with the reopening of school for millions of families. Nationwide hospitalizations now topped 55,000. Thats the highest number since february in a 27 increase since last week. President biden lashed out at republican governors who have banned businesses and universities from requiring vaccines and masks. States, florida and texas, account for one third of all new covid19 cases in the entire country. Just two states. Look, we need leadership from everyone. Some governors arent willing to do the right thing to beat this pandemic, then they should allow businesses and universities who want to do the right thing to be able to do it. I say to these governors, please help. If you arent going to help, at least get out of the way. Elizabeth cohen joins us with these new details about the increase in coronavirus cases among children. Elizabeth, just increase in number or are we also seeing increase in severity . Right now were just seeing increase in number. But i want to be clear about this severity issue. Im glad you brought it up, john. Too many times we hear people say, oh, so my child will get coronavirus. Whats the big deal . Theyll just be a little sick. Why in the world would you want to watch your child suffer when you could have just vaccinated them . I was talking to someone who knows someone whose child got coronavirus, Unvax Nate Lying in the bed for days with 104 degree fever. Why would you want that for your child . You run the risk that your child will end up in the hospital or even die. That happens to completely healthy children. So lets go over these numbers again from the American Academy Of Pediatrics that shows just how bad this is getting. July 22nd through the 29th, more than 70,000 new cases among children and teens. Thats an 84 increase in one week, in one week. Thats five times the number of cases among children and teens since june. Thats an incredible rise. So if youre thinking, my children are going to be fine, im not going to worry about this, think again. And then on cnn Last Night the former Surgeon General said something very alarming, elizabeth. He said that this delay on Fda Approval of the vaccine rather than it being Emergency Use Authorization that its costing lives. What is the latest information we have about when that is going to get full approval . Thats right. The reason why dr. Jerome adams said that theres this Cad Ray of people who are saying, oh, its only got Emergency Use Authorization. Ill feel better about getting the shot if its got the full approval from the fda. Now, theres no logical reason for them to think this. But they think this. So the hope is that once theres full approval that more people will roll up their sleeves. What cnn is hearing from a federal official is that the fda is moving and will get this done as soon as they can. The New York times reporting that it will happen by labor day. What i heard is these are two separate things, getting full approval for the shot for 16 and older versus authorization for younger children. Louisiana hospitalizations are surging to record levels. Administrators report acute Staffing Shortages and Emergency Rooms packed beyond capacity. We are joined from baton rouge. You just received new information from the largest hospital in that state. What have you learned . Reporter john, the numbers just keep getting worse here in louisiana. So im standing at our Lady Of The Lake Childrens Hospital and we have ten children behind me battling for their lives, at least one of them is in the icu needing help to breathe. Another one of those kids just 3 weeks old, a baby, battling covid19. Now yesterday the number was nine children. The day before that just eight. So everyday were adding one more child who needs to be hospitalized with covid19. Across the street is the largest hospital in the state of louisiana. And there they are at 100 capacity, 175 covid patients. They cant accept anyone else. There is a Wait List to have more people transferred to the hospital. So you think about somebody who has covid19, they need to be hospitalized here where they can get the help that they need but theres no beds. Along with that, the influx of covid19 patients there is a staffing shortage. So, even if they could find an additional bed, theres no one to help them, care for them because theres not enough doctors and nurses to be on this rotation to help with all of these different covid patients coming in from more rural and suburban parts of the area. Its not just here at our Lady Of The Lake, but also at lsus healthcare system, theyre battling the same exact issues but they say theres an answer. Get vaccinated. Take a listen. Right now were caring for the patient, but we need people to get vaccinated. These new numbers are good, but it will take a good month and a half to see the result of these new vaccinations. And so, were just going to have to take care of people like we have done all along. But message has to be please get vaccinated. If youre on the fence, take your chances with this vaccine. Its a lot better than taking your chances with covid. Now they have to pick and choose who really needs their help, where they present their resources because theyre just overrun with covid patients. When i walked around and talked to different business owners, store clerks, i had one Convenience Store Clerk throw his hands up, dont ask me about that because hes on the front lines of having to enforce this Mask Mandate. None were provided with new guidelines or messaging from the state telling them how to enforce this Mask Mandate and we all remember the heated and at times violent exchanges from Store Managers and from people who refused to wear mask. Now he is witnessing what hes describing as the worst its ever been in floridas hospitals. Doctor, tell us what it is like on the ground there. Its honestly going from one disaster to another. It used to be where i would be really happy going to work, taking care of people, meeting complete strangers and having them leave for the most part either with a frown thats a little less of a frown or a smile. And now its just onslaught of majority being covid patients. A lot of people just overrun. We dont have room for a lot of people. And i luck out where i work at places where they do a terrific job to move people around and we have plenty of ppe and i feel safe myself, but its really dangerous in terms of the patients because theres so many people waiting. Were literally running out of room when you have people like terrific nurses and terrific paramedics have limits how many patients they can take care of at once. And were trying to figure out what to put where. I dont have any limits in terms of patients at once technically. But, its straining. I leave work absolutely drained. Look, i was down in surfside and now how horrible it was. What i find interesting is how you compare the two awful tragedies here. One, surfside is just awful accident that took the lives of nearly 100 people. There was nothing they could do. But this is different. What youre facing now is different. There is something that people can do. How frustrating is that for you . Quite honestly its extremely frustrating. It really is a slap in the face. This is going from spending just under a month at surfside where they couldnt do anything, just like you said, and i personally lost four people and firefighters that were like family that lost people. And to come back and do this where just full gamut where this essentially could have been prevented or it really could have been prevented if people would just listen to proper information. There is a difference between listening and hearing. Theyre choosing to hear misinformation and this is just a slap in the face. It really is. There are certainly questions about whether the Florida State Government is handling this correctly. Like i said, jackson, the covid patients are half of what they were last year. Even in places that have more covid patients represent a fraction of the overall hospital beds. There are only parts of that that are accurate. One, jackson is in miami. And we are getting a surge. I mean, the rest of what he said is kind of preposterous because whether somebody if you stub your toe or you have a Heart Attack or a stroke or a shark attack, anything, were going to take care of you. And were going to take excellent care of you. And where the acuity for majority of people might not be as bad yet, we still have all these people that are there. A lot of people that are there as patients. So that still takes up a spot. We have people in hospitals all over florida that are Boarding Patients where normally you would be in the e. R. , you would be stabilized, be there maybe a couple hours with Board Certified Emergency Physicians, and then you go Up To the Floor Or Icu or whatever. Im coming in for multiple shifts, my colleagues are coming in for multiple shifts with the same patients had been admitted for a day or two still in the emergency what we call boarding. I know one of the other counties down here among five hospitals is boarding something like over 100 patients. And thats just the numbers are there. So i dont know what hes really talking about and how hes playing his numbers, but i do not agree with that statement of what he said. Dr. Abo, thank you so much. Good luck. He goes on to promote the Big Lie, january 6th, based on the Big Lie happens. Do you think that that acquittal emboldened him to proceed the way he did . I do. Hes an individual that tests that automatically tests boundaries and pushes as far as he can go. And the signals he received from his acquittal emboldened him going into management of the pandemic. I said it before, the president was believed he could about with impunity and could disregard all of the Warning Signs about an unfolding pandemic. And his mismanagement resulted in needless deaths of hundreds of thousands of people. Certainly we could still have people dying because of pandemic, but it was the president s mismanagement. If he had been removed, censured on his back heels we would not have those kinds of casualties and wouldnt have had a second impeachment and wouldnt have riots in the streets that the president himself inflamed and wouldnt have an insurrection. Thats not just the failure of the president , thats a failure of the people that enabled the president. I was speaking with someone recently who has experience with the regimes that you have experience with, right, in your area of expertise with Eastern Europe and with russia. Authoritarian governments. And that person said that, you know, most americans havent seen those up close. So they dont necessarily recognize the hallmarks of them. In the Trump Administration or they arent alarmed by them, but that americans dont see a slide toward it when its happening. Do you think that there is a slide toward Authoritarianism Happening in the su. S. . Without any doubt a second Trump Term would have put us on that trajectory, clearly on that trajectory. Absent accountability for the misdeeds of the last administration, so thats the onus on the biden administration to pursue accountability, we could be in the same weakened position moving forward into a different administration in the future, one that we might not be able to cope with. If trump was ineffective, the next wanna be tyrant, next wanna be authoritarian can be a lot more effective in further undermining the good governance and we could find ourselves completely different country.
