This morning, the pace of vaccinations is picking up. The sevenday average up 26 from three weeks ago. Lets talk about where we stand right now in this effort to get everyone vaccinated and how useful these vaccines really are. Joined now by cnn senior Data Reporter Harry enton. Thats a pretty good number. Its a really good number. Look at this. From the cdc. Look at this. Okay. Not hospitalized from covid if youre fully vaxd, over 163 Million have not been hospitalized from covid if youre fully vaxd, did not die from covid. When these stats were taken, do you know how many people were fully vaxd . Over 163 Million. The percentage of the vaccinated who were not hospitalized because of covid greater than 99. 996 did not die from covid. I mean its crystal clear right here. They clearly work. These numbers clearly show it. If youre not vaccinated, harry, your chances arent nearly as good. This is the cdc estimate they put together these different studies. If youre unvaccinated, chance of a symptomatic case is eight times higher than if you were fully vaccinated. Hospitalizations, unvaccinated, 25 times higher. Chance of death, 25 times higher. If youre unvaccinated youre putting yourself at much greater risk than you would if you were fully vaccinated. These Number Couldnt be more clearer at this point. Are you still seeing a stark partisan difference . We are. And basically what you see here are people who are fully vaccinated, total percentage of the population, states that voted for biden are in the blue, 50 states that voted for trump, we start eed to see that divide early this year around march. Less than 50 . Still about a 10point Divide with the bidens states being much more likely to be fully vaxd than the Trump States are. It seems to be having an effect in terms of where the cases are happening. Thats exactly right. We look at the individual stats and see it on the group level. I believe we can see it on the group level. This is a proportion of new cases nationwide. Theres a seasonality to this, right . On 2020, the Trump States made up a large percentage of the new cases. 65 of the new cases versus 35 in the biden states. Theres seasonality going on here. Look at 2021. Look at this. Trump states are making up 65 of the cases. Places where you have fewer vaccinations are making april larger share. Were seeing the same thing in terms of hospitalizations . Exactly right, same exact thing in terms of hospitalizations. Back in 2020, Trump States were 64 of the new hospitalizations. This year, look at that. 72 . You look at the individual data, state data. Its clear that the people who are vaccinated, fewer cases, fewer hospitalizations, fewer deaths. Look at the State Level data, fewer cases and hospitalizations. Vaccinations are the best way to get through this area. Thank you. One state dealing with a crippling resurgence of coronavirus is louisiana. Doctors are seeing more young patients admitted to their hospitals. Lets talk to this about with dr. Julio figueroa. Give us a sense of what youre dealing with in the hospital there where you are. So, were seeing a lot of patients come ing in with vario levels of disease. Some people coming in, needing the ventilator right away. Some people coming in with shortness of breath that requires additional support. And, as you mentioned, the vast majority of individuals now seem to be much younger than what we were seeing last year. So, as opposed to last year where we were seeing most of our patients in their 60s, 70s and 80s, now were seeing patients in their 20s, 30s and 40s. Are you seeing any kids . I personally do not see kids because im an adult physician, but i know that pediatric hospitals in and around the region are seeing children and are certainly seeing more children than they ever have before. For you, what is the takeaway there . If youre seeing younger people, if you are seeing youre not seeing children but pediatric Care Facilityies around you are seeing children, what needs to happen . The Majority Thing is that the Delta Variant is a different animal than was coming around last year. What its showing is that younger people are getting sicker, sicker earlier. Now were see Ing Teenagers and younger individuals getting sick. It tells me that it requires us to take extra measures in order to be able to reduce the spread thats going on in our state and across the country. Your governor, John Bell edwards, said hes seriously considering putting a statewide Face Mask Mandate back in place. Do you think that needs to happen . I think thats a prudent strategy as were seeing right now as was mentioned earlier. The fact that you have a collection of vaccinated sbun vaccinated individuals together in close quarters allows for that transmission to occur. Therefore In The City of new orleans, the mayor has reinstituted the Mask Mandate for indoor activities and i think that would be prudent across the state. What do you think about a Booster Shot for older americans or for the vulnerable . At the Moment Cdc and fda are l looking at the information for Booster Shots.
