Live from are cnn center, this is cnn newsroom, with theres a growing surge in cases as more Health Experts are warning that things will get worse. Here is a look at the seven day average with the u. S. Among the countrys seeing a jump in infections here. To date, theres been nearly 200 Million cases worldwide. More than 4 Million people have died. Now, these new outbreaks and the ease of transmission have some officials reimposing restrictions. And while vaccines have been, and vaccinations have been lagging we are seeing an uptick in shots in parts of the u. S. For sure. This comes as countries are also looking ahead to boosters. The uk is preparing for a possible third Covid Vaccine Shot from september, its all part of an effort to pro long protection especially in those who are the most vulnerable. Now, the Delta Variant is behind a surge in new cases in hospitalizations throughout the u. S. Right now, every state is reporting more new infections compared to the previous week. But the centers for Disease Control and prevention said that more than 99. 99 of people who are fully vaccinated against the virus will not, will not be hospitalized or die from you it. Thats important to note. The Delta Highlights what experts and officials have said for months. Vaccines are very, very effective at preventing serious illness and death. And its really the best shot at slowing town the pandemic. One encouraging sign saturday, it marked the fifth straight day of 700,000 shots in arms. Dr. Fauci said its a start, but not enough. Take a listen. I dont think that we are going to see lockdowns. I think we have enough of the percentage of people in the country not enough to crush the outbreak. But i believe enough to not allow us to get in to the situation we were in last winter. But things are going get worse. Overall, slightly less than half of the u. S. Population is fully vaccinated. Meantime, new York City is expected to announce updated Mask Guidelines in the coming hours. The city is certainly weighing whether or not to adopt the indoor masking recommendations from the cdc, florida, meanwhile, has become a new epicenter of the surge, the State Counts for 1 in 5 of all new cases in the country. We break down the numbers, randy . In the past week or so, we have seen more than 110,000 new cases here in the state of florida Of Covid, the Daily Avrg is 15,800. And over the weekend. We set a record for the most new cases in a single day since the pandemic began with 21,683 new cases saturday. If you look how florida is contributing to the number of cases around the country. 19. 2 of all new covid cases reported in the u. S. Are right here in florida. Mainly south florida, also, we are experiencing similar numbers to what we saw back in january, really, at the height of the pandemic. Florida also still just about 49 of the population here is fully vaccinated. So, is still aways to go. Theres a lot of concern about schools reopening and what is happening to children under 12 who are not yet eligible for the vaccine. If you look at the numbers there. Cases among that Age Group under 12, nearly 11,000 children in the last week or so testing positive under 12 years old for covid, the Positivity Rate for that Age Group is 18. 1 . The statewide Positivity Rate is 18. 2 and the governor here said that you cannot mandate masks in the classroom when the students return. He is issued an Executive Order Saying that you cannot do that, he wants it to be up to the parents, he wants the parents to have the choice whether or not they want to mask their children. He said any district that defies the Executive Order could risk losing funding and become ineligible for grants. The governor pushing hard to keep the statewide open. And avoid mask mandates. Reporting this ing in florida, you. Some parts of India And China are struggling to contain a outbreak Of Covid cases. India experienced an alarming rise in infections On Sunday alone there were new cases. And in china, they are trying to contain an outbreak that started in the airport and now is spread to 11 provinces. Lets go to beijing and we have more on. That hi, stephen. What can you tell us about the outbreak . Well, hi, robyn, On Sunday, the government recorded 99 new locally confirmed cases. Obviously this number pales in comparison to what we are seeing in many parts of the world, including the u. S. In this you know can in this country , w have not seen it in months. Now, she was the same senior official they sent to wuhan in the beginning of the pandemic that, is how seriously concerned they feel about the spread of the new cluster as you were saying shows no sign of abating with new cases being reported by local officials throughout a day and now impacting not just Airport Staff but crew, school children, tourists and doctors and nurses across china. That is why increasingly we are seeing local authorities reimposing draconian measures that we have not seen for a long time. Means that millions people are confined to homes as the government has designated more than 90 high or medium, risk areas. This is of course happen in the middle of the Peak Summer Travel season. And that does not help things as we are seeing more Tourist Attractions and airports being shut down. As they warn and advise residents to not leave town. Here in the chinese capitol, they have tightened Entry Requirements and banned people from entrance by suspending transportation links to the areas. As of now, the leadership is sticking to their current approach. Which is zero tolerance to the locally transmitted cases. Do expect to see more lockdowns and a sharp decline in domestic travel, robyn. Thanks for the update. Appreciate it. Joining me now is Philip Barker from tokyo. He is an olympic historian for inside the games. Thank you for joining us. Its the start, the beginning of a new week in these really strange times for the olympics. What, what has defined it so far . Its been an olympics where we have not had crowds and the theme has been coming together. So many of the athletes have been training in isolation over the last year, and actually, being able to get out and compete has been a big boom for them. And one of the things that i have noticed is the emergence of so on many new nations on to the podium. We had Flo Duffy winning early in the competitions and later on, we have had a stream of new nations that we are not used to seeing on podium. Last year, i saw israel winning on the floor in the Gymnastics Apparatus finals. It had a wonderful affect on the television people behind us. When the National Anthem played, they were singing their hearts out. It stopped traffic in tel aviv, everyone was watching the final. So many countries that you dont normally see on the podium, only this morning i saw Puerto Rico winning the 100 meter hurdles in the olympic stadium. New names on the podium. And a world record, first woman for venezuela to do so, won gold. Has been in with the new and new countries making their way and making an olympic statement. It has, and tell us about the new sports. Tell us about that, theres surfing, and skateboarding and how is it going down . It has gone down well. The japanese were delighted when they were on their first Skateboarding Gold medal. We have had surfing and we have got the 3 on 3 basketball, which a lot of the sports were tried out at the youth Limpolympic Ga and were upgraded when they saw they were a success to the olympics and we had another twist on mixed sports. You have mixed doubles in tennises and the equestrian events are always mixed. This time, we have had the mixed triathlon, which was a Relay Event with two men, two women. The race was, something throughout and we have had or events as well. Mixed judo, and its redemption for teddy, The Giant came here and lost in the quarterfinals of the individual. He came Back Sand they tell interstated their triumph, a wonderful moment. Thats whole point of the olympics, particularly in times like this. Tall the individual moments. The highs and the lows, i suppose. In previous olympics and you know, i have are been doing this job for many, many years, decades. And certainly the last few olympics i have reported on and anchored have involved really sad conversation about doping, in particular russian state sponsored doping. Russian athletes are performing where you are right now, winning medals and even though the country is banned. Is that a sign of the Iocs Failure to punish doping or a sign that things have cleaned s up . The athletes that come here are clean. One of the things that confused us all, normally when a National Olympic Committee that governs the Sporting Events is banned the athletes are still allowed to compete if they are clean as individual Olympic Athletes or independent Olympic Athletes. Here, now they are allowed to wear uniforms that dont have the Word Russia on them, but they have the, they are basic million the national colors and when they win a medal, we get the piano concerto. You cannot get more russian than that. Concessions have been made for russian athletes than would have not been made for smaller countries. This is generally the pun punishment. It seems theres one rule for on one country, and one rule for another. Thank you for joining us, great to get your expertise, thank you very much. Thank you. Try as they mieght they can get away from controversy. A belarusian sprinter is requests political asylum. Joining me, is blake, blake, first to you, what is the latest on her . Yeah, Belarusian Skater was supposed to be competing tonight, but instead, she posted this video on Social Media pleading for help. Translator i ask the national political committee for help, i ask the interNational Olympic Committee to intervene. They are trying Take Me Out of the country without my and consent. She said that she was given an hour to pack her things and ordered to fly back to minsk immediately. She was removed from competing due to her emotional state. And she said its not true. This came after she posted a video on Social Media with where she alleged that she was included on a list to run the 4 by 400 Meter Relay behind her back and without her consent. Its an event she has not prepared for. Now, she said that she was forceablely taken to the airport by members of the belaruse national team, once there she approached a japanese Police Officer and said shed like to apply for political asylum, and overnight, the sprinter was secured by police in a special shelter near the airport and according to the ioc, she feels safe and secure. This they addressed her situation earlier today. Take a listen. We are talking again to her this morning to understand what the next steps could be. What sthhe wants to pursue and will give her support in that decision. As i say, she is in the hands of the authorities at the moment. We have also asked the belasure representatives for a full written report. She said that she fears arrest if she returns to her Home Country. Her current location in tokyo is unknown at this time and so far, japan, the czech Republic And Poland have all Offer Today Sprinter visas and we expect her to say where shed like to apply for asylum today. We have received no response from any parties that the point. Do keep us posted, this is an important story. And of course, we are also talking about the Sporting Action on The Fields and on the tracks. Patrick snell is here for sdmampt hey, patrick, good to see you and a good day for italy. Great to see you too. Yeah, absolutely the summer of italian sport, i think its fair to say, got a whole lot better after they won the European Championships last month in england. Now they say they have the fastest man in the world, jacob shocking The Field by winning the 100 meters and an incredible achievement, a man, this is why its so incredible. The fact that he was compete engine long jump until he switched three years ago, just an amazing story. He is the first european to win the prestige us event. Since kristy back in 1992. And he is celebrated in the arms of his compatriot, who just won gold. That is priceless. Wonderful to see, and leads me on nicely indeed to that mens high jump that we also discover. This is one of the best stories of the olympics so far in my opinion. No question about that. There were two winners in the contest here. They went up against Each Other for two hours and they both made their best jump at two meters 37. They were going to have a jump off and no, what happened . We had a wonderful moment of sportsmanship, they have two Gold Medals, splitting the prize and making history. The first joint winners in Olympicing Athletics since 1912. Once we finished the jump, he look at me, and i look at him and we understood, no need to go, it was not a question. Probably i will never, ever share a Gold Medal with anybody else than with him, because we pass, we were the only two athletes passed through the worst injuries that athletes can pass through. And i know what he did to be back. He know what i did to be back. You cannot leave the Emotion And Dream of a Gold Medal to someone who has sacrificed his entire life for this. And it was just amazing and sharing with a friend is even more beautiful. Thank you. We go celebrate. Wonderful story, isnt it . Well a short while ago, i can tell you that Puerto Rico Jasmine celebrating a golden moment. This after winning the womens 100 meter hurdles in a time of 12. 37. She claimed Puerto Ricos first medal of the olympics and second ever Track And Field medal. The United States Kendra Harrison earning silver and i want to squeeze this in. Its historic. The greek sport, the men winning the long jump, and juan miguel hechavaria, winning and i mention it was historic. Its greeces first ever medal in the mens long jump. I send it back to out, robin. Thank you so much for sharing all the stories, it just makes me smile, it makes us all smile and touches people Around The World. Just those individual moments of joy. I think we all need it. Patrick, glad to see you my friend. Thank you. Here is another one. One of the biggest stunners of the game as well. Winning gold in the mens 400 meter free style. He is not just the fourth athlete representing tunisia to win olympic gold in any sport and for a country rocked by political turmoil, the victory was welcomed back home. Michael holmes has the story. A Heros Welcome for a tunisian swimmer who brought home olympic gold, in a shocking win that surprised his competitors. The Sporting World and even himself. 18yearold was the longest of long shots. The slowest qualifier nor the mens 400 meter free style. But he out swam the favorites to get the gold, and even more stunning is he did it from the outside lane. Translator i felt shivers when i heard the National Anthem, he said. Adding im very honored. Tunisias newest Media Star is a welcome distraction for the country, suffering from a stagnant economy made worse by a surging coronavirus and an escalating political crisis. The parliament has been suspended for 30 days. Despite the Chaos And Uncertainty in government, they are seeing this as a bright win. Michael phelps called the performance an unbelievable swim. Neighbors poured out to greetity the newly minted champion. As one man said, seeing him touch that Wall First was a win for everyone. Translator when i was watching i cannot tell you how we felt at this final moment. He said, this is the feeling of every tunisian. And an underdog going from lane eight to the top of the podium. Giving much needed hope to the country he returns to. Thanks so make he will for that story. Global concerns and growing covid cases is highly contagious Delta Variant, the u. S. Is among the countries seeing a jump in infections over the past week. Now, new outbreaks and the ease of transmission, some officials are reimposing restrictions. Covid Lock Down restrictions in australian Queens Land are being extended for another week. Initial stayathome orders will run through monday. They said that it has been insufficient as the Delta Variant is spreading along the countrys East Coast states. Joining me from sidney, angus watson. You have been cooped up for weeks now. Infections are rising and the army is being called out, Vaccination Rates are low. How angry are people right now. People are frustrated as you mentioned, Vaccination Rates are low. People feel like this is a Lock Down that sidney in particular may not have had to have if the federal government had done a better job of getting jabs in to peoples arms. Australia has vaccinated 20 of the population. That is dangerously under vaccinated, considering the pace in which the Delta Variant is moving. Considering how quickly it has moved six weeks ago, we started out with one case, the case of a l l driver, he caught the variant and three weeks later, 3500 people have it. They gave the nation a target of 70 of fully vaccinated. So they can get to a place where the lockdowns will happen less frequently so that turned up the vaccination rate. People are showing up to do their part and hopefully put the lockdowns behind us once and for all. None of it has been helped by Spreading Misinformation. They have banned sky that is right. Its extraordinary for a Mainstream Television Station in australia to be told by youtube that it cannot up load to the Youtube Channel because its Spreading Misinformation about covid19. Now, Sky News Australia is known for its right wing heeditorials. People have gone on Sky News and criticized authorities in australia having lockdown. Youtube said that it has one strike, it is Spreading Misinformation and they should not be able to up load for seven days. We will see if its pro longed. Yeah, its fascinating. Rupert mourdock, owning Sky News Australia, and angus watson, one of my Favorite Parts Of Sidney on the northshore. Where i used to live. Beautiful day, thank you very much. And at least eight people are dead from wildfires that are burning along the mediteranian coast of turkey. More than 1100 people have been evacuated for the second day in a row a favorite Tourist Site for many people. Mostevacuations have been done. I know you have a report for us and if you could just explain to us what You Saw, what people told you. Well, robin, look, the turkish government is saying they have most of the fires under control. The problem is that the ones they dont have under control, they are raging with multiple points. Now, we have additional assistance that has been coming over the last few days from russia, the European Union is going to be sending a number of aircraft. What its highlighted is how woefully unprepared turkey is to combat these types of wild, widespread wildfires. And so, what we have been seeing is villagers fighting with everything they have to try to protect their homes, and their Livel Livel livelihoods sgloo he can. Reporter he can barrel breathe. Barrel shout the words, her Fathers Land is burning. Let it burn, we are going to on burn too her relative responds. She is frantic, where to do, what to do, the flames have been leaping close tore this village on turkeys southern mediteranian coast, its as if they are fight ago monster each time comes to life every time they dare to say its dead. Everything will burn he tells us. Our land, our animals, our house. What else do we have anyway . Despite this being close to popular Sea Side Tourist destinations, the villagers dont have much and what they have they cherish, they take pride in. A small band of men from here and other areas trudge through the easily flamable fields. They take control of the firefighters hose. Its so hot out, it feels like the water evaporates almost as quickly as its sprayed. Trees are felled to stop the flames from growing and sparks fly Engin F the last of the children are sent away. How should i feel . We have not slept for three days. They are so understandably upset. So angry, that they are actually finding our questions of how they are feeling and thinking to be ridiculous and i get it. For what can one even think, even say when they are watching everything they own in life about to go up in flames . And we spoke to people in the area who told us that thankfully, the fire shifted away from moving towards the village. Largely because the winds have shifted, but it is still gobbling up the forest and heading toward another small village as well. And that is really what we are witnessing there. It would seem as if the minute they would have one portion of the fire, one point, one Fire Point under control, another one would just emerge. As You Saw in the report, people are angry, they are frustrated. They are sad. And they really want to know, why is it that the Government Wasnt better prepared or didnt call out for more assistance earlier on . And also, another example of Climate Change which just seems inevitable. Thank you very much, great reporting. Ha for bringing us the story. So coastal columbian town is facing a humanitarian crisis. Thousands of migrants are stranded hoping to make the long journey to the United States. We are on the location. Its Barrely Dawn when they start lining up for the boats going to caribbean. They are usually packed with tourists from Around The World, and its become a passage for migrants, looking for better Opportunities Thousands of miles away in the United States. People from haiti, venezuela, brazil, and even as far as Ghana Cross the Gulf And Set on a treacherous yourjourney, they a heading to mexico and then the United States, and ignoring the biden administrationses dont come message to migrants. The problem is if you want to go to the border the authorities are go ing to ask you questions and you have to, they have to know if you have somebody . Usas after. Minutes before recording the interview, his friend discovered that they had been robbed. They had spent a night in that boat On The Beach and found their belongings scattered. They had their passports and money with them but some of their food was stolen. And they are waiting for the next Boat Ride and like many others had no other choices but spending the night On The Beach. Some were able to stay in hotels, a safer choice. But a more expensive one. Waiting here costs a lot when you cannot work and dont know when you will leave said this woman. A hatian mother who is now traveling with her two children. In these remote small towns, transports are limited. Theres just one Boat Company crossing the gulf. They are completely sold out. Other Boat Companies are hours away. Its hard, we tried to transport like 800, 900 people for a day. But, its hard. The fare costs, and on others have paid their trip and are waiting for their turn. Some fear it could take up to ten days to leave. The Defense Minister visited the area this weekend, pledging the navy will provide a temporary pire to allow more boats to take the migrants to the other side of the gulf. And that may be too little, too late, as many arrive daily. Putting a heavy load on the small communities. The knew who have made it on the boats feel relief. For some of them, its one part of the journey. I think we will join could costa rica. And then you can hope is just a feeble flame at the end of the road. Cnn. Thanks, great piece there.
