Hear a tale we dont do ourselves any favors by underestimating the cultural penetration these little songs had in this culture. Whatever happened to the Tv Theme Song . Youre gonna make it after all outside of your own songs, whats your favorite Team Theme . Ever . Ever. I loved Green Acres because i grew up in a town called Green Acres. Green acres is the place to be fun living is the life for me land spreading out so far and wide, you can keep manhattan, just give me the countryside you are my wife, goodbye city life. Green acres, we are there outside of your own amazing show which i love, i have to say that, what is your favorite Tv Theme Song . The Brady Bunch. Heres the story of a lovely lady who is bringing up three very lovely girls because i like when the song tells the story of the serioes. And i was very influenced with that growing up. Its the Story Of A Man Named Brady who was busy with three boys of his own addams family. Theyre creepy and their kooky and ookie, how do you spell ookie . Heres the biggest question. Whatever happened to the Theme Song . You know, its a good question. Who can turn the world on with her smile this is a story all about how my life got flipped here on gilligans isle there was a sense that those shows that came out in the 60s and 70s, everybody knew them as well as you would know happy Birthday Or Mary had a little lamb. Those four notes would immediately cause that almost pavlovian kneejerk reaction. The weather started getting rough, the tiny ship was tossed if not for the courage of the fearless crew, The Minnow would be lost everybody knew how gilligan got on that island. Because they had heard the song over and over again. The skipper too, the millionaire and his wife we dont do ourselves any favor by underestimating the cultural penetration that these little songs had in this culture. Making your way in the World Today takes Everything Youve got when cheers started, nobody was watching. But fortunately there was a lot of interest in the song. What happened . Judy Hart Angelo was a friend of mine for a number of years. We wrote this song called my kind of people. Lets hear it. My kind of People Root for the Home Team making a living out in the mainstream we sit with our friends, the old and the true ones, before the night ends, were bound to make new ones heres the bad part. You never know whos going to show at cheers, and heres to wait, i liked it. You liked it . Okay. We sent it and they turned it down. We said, can we write you another one . They said yes. So we wrote this song called another day. There are times when its fun to take the long way home sit around with those youve come to know hangin out until its time to close they liked it. But they turned it down. So we went from zippity and we crossed the line into total melancholy. At that point, honestly, we thought it was over, we felt the air was going out of the tire and we were never going to get it. So i sat down and i literally just plunking. Dan danahnah. And we started writing words. The words that we wrote were Singing The Blues when the Red Sox lose, its a crisis in your life On The Run cause all your girlfriends want to be your wife and the laundry tickets in the wash sometimes you want to go so we finished it and they said, we really like this but youve got to change those words at the top. So we booked studio time before we ever even wrote it, we were like, this thing you can say the bad word. [ bleep ]. Because i cant take it anymore. So i remember writing in a cab going down to the recording studio, working on making your way in the i dont think we ever actually played the whole song until we got into the studio to get something back for them. Making your way in the World Today takes Everything Youve got taking a break from all your worries sure would help a Lot Wouldnt you like to get away sometimes you want to go where everybody knows your name and theyre always glad you came you want to be where you can see our troubles are all the same you want to be everybody knows your name you want to go where people know people are all the same you want to go where everybody knows your name and we sent it out and they said yes. And you said yes, maam. Oh, [ bleep ]. Thats the way we all became the Brady Bunch rumor is you were singing the song on the Set And Someone heard you and said, why dont the kids sing the song . Is that true, or no . Oh no. I thought i just ordered tacos. Nope . Ramen. Burgers. Milk from the store, and. Cookies . Wha, Me Hungry here, ill call some friends to help us eat. Yeah, that good idea. Get more from your neighborhood. Hey yo, grover doordash. Only 6 of us Retail Businesses have a black owner. That needs to change. So, i did something. I created a black Business Accelerator at amazon. And now we have a program thats dedicated to making tomorrow a better day for black businesses. I am tiffany. And this is just the beginning. man eye contact. Elbow pump. Very nice, andrew. Very nice. Good job. Next, apparently carvana doesnt have any bogus fees. Bogus . now we work hard for those fees. No hundreddollar Fuel Fee . Pumping gas makes me woozy. Thank you. No 600 Doc Fee . Ugh, the printing, the organizing. No 200 cleaning fees. Microfiber, that chaps my hands. You know, we should go over there right now and show em how fees are done. vo never pay a dealer fee. With carvana. You need an ecolab scientific clean here. And here. There was probably something just as evil but it didnt seem like it was all coming at us at once as it does now. They hold up, dont they . Except for the hairdos. How do you explain to yourself the success of seinfeld . Its like this miracle thing. If you add or subtract one word, it ruins the whole thing. This is like a perfect little joke, these four people, the way we mesh. You couldnt have written it out that way. No, a lot of luck. And a lot of hard work. Many people say the first Hit Television Show was the texaco star theater. And it also was probably the first Theme Song that immediately could be something that everybody was able to sing. The Theme Song was really a commercial. It was sponsored by texaco oil corporation. And the entire Theme Song is four Gas Station attendants that do a Chorus Line and sing the Theme Song in full Gas Station attendant uniform. And by the way, never mention the star of The Show once. The Theme Song, once it was liberated from its sales obligation, was able to move into more rich, artistic, and dramatic territory. Its the Story Of A Man Named Brady you have one of the most iconic Tv Theme Songs ever. Could you have imagined that when you were a little kid and they cast you in this role . No, not even close. All i know is that when asked to sing, i was petrified, because im that guy, you know, at a Birthday Party that can screw up happy birthday. Rumor is, is that you were singing the song on the Set And Someone came up with the idea, someone heard you and said, why dont the kids sing the song. Is that true or no . Maybe. I havent heard that rumor. If i was there, i wouldnt have been the one singing the song. Do you remember anything from the Recording Session . All of a sudden theyre dragging me into a studio and i know what i have to deliver. Not much. Its just amazing what my singing does to peoples faces. So i try not to do it much. A lot more people could recite the Theme Song from the Brady Bunch than could recite that poem thats on the bottom of the statue of liberty. Who was busy with three boys of his own is it because these songs were so brilliant . And i think in their own way they were. But is it because they were written by the greatest composers of all time . If most cases, no. Sherwood schwartz was a comedy guy. He wrote two of the most classic of all time tv songs, the Brady Bunch and gilligans island. Just sit right back and youll hear a tale of a fateful trip he wrote those songs because he needed them to serve a purpose, to give us the entire Back Story of those shows. For a Threehour Tour, a Threehour Tour the weather started getting rough, the tiny ship was tossed the detail is so basic and specific. The minnow would be lost the simplicity is almost like modern architecture that decided it was going to expose everything it was. You see the pipes, you see the support beams. The bauhaus level of Tv Theme Song. And the rest are here on gilligans isle heres the story of a lovely lady and the Brady Bunch just does it. Here is the story, once upon a time, a lovely lady bringing up three very lovely girls, all of them had hair of gold, goldilocks. This goes deep into our medieval way of telling stories. It was kind of hip back then, it was a blended family when most of tv was mom, dad, in a first time heterosexual relationship, in a suburban single Family Dwelling with their own biological kids. We were at least beginning to explore that families could love Each Other and not necessarily fall into that very old fashioned notion of The American family. Can you please sing it for us . Heres the story of a lovely lady who was bringing up three very lovely girls all of them had hair of gold, like their mother the youngest one in curls by the way, thats why she should never leave the curls behind and always had a headache. Heres the Story Of A Man Named Brady who was busy with three boys of his own they were four men living all together yet they were all alone till the One Day when the lady met this foellow when they knew it was much more than a hunch that this group should somehow form a family thats the way they all became the Brady Brunch does it make you cringe or do you still love it . Cant cringe. Its an honor. Who could have predicted this . Having been part of this thing that affects everybody, only generates camaraderie and brotherhood, because thats really what i feel i get from it. We knew they were silly. That whole 60s, 70s Television Era we approach with a loving sense of disdain. In the 1980s, television started coming attitude. We can do shows like cheers and the old idea of the Brady Bunch Theme Song seemed positively part of that Old School thing. So the only reason we get an expository Theme Song, an old fashioned Theme Song, is when its done tongue in cheek. The nanny is a great example. She was working in a bridal shop in flushing, queens til her boyfriend picked her out of those crushing scenes it aggressively went to a 60s style thing. You get The Show, they said deal, and then when do you say, okay, now, Theme Song . When you make a polilot, we dont know whether its ever going to air, they dont spend money on an Opening Title. Im not really sure, if i knew that i would be doing my second one. I thought you were beautiful. Come on, peg, you used to diaper his face. We had very faithful viewers. Theyll stick with us as long as we keep doing it. Fraser was like cheers, very popular shows. I got an inkling early on, this is going to be huge, this is going to be change my life. You get a sense, youre releasing it to the public, here it is, love it or hate it, we did our best. Who would have guessed the Girl Weve described was exactly what the doctor prescribed and the kids are actually smiling shes The Lady In Red when everybody else is wearing tan the flashy girl from flushing, The Nanny Named Fran what was the spark for The Show . It was when i was in london with my girlfriend twiggy. Her and her husband were busy working. And so i ended up hanging out with her little daughter, and im shlepping her all over london and the kid says, oh, fran, my new shoes are hurting me. Im thinking, what the hell is she telling me for . I said, step on the backs of them. She said, wont that break them . And i said, break them in. I wasnt telling her what was good for her like a normal c care caregiver. I was telling her what was good for me. I thought, what about a spin on the sound of music, only instead of julie andrews, i come to the door . You get The Show, they said deal, and when do you say, okay, now Theme Song . We made the pilot. Do you have a pen . In fact they didnt even give us enough money to make a full pilot. We insisted on doing the whole script, and we borrowed sets and had a very small budget. All right, but on a trial basis. When The Show got picked up, they said, now you need to come up with an incredible Opening Titles. And that was when i said, lets get ann Hampton Calloway to write it. Ann Hampton Calloway is a Sing Ander and a songwriter, ri . Yes. A friend of minute took me to a club and there she was singing. I had it in my head if i ever had a show of My Own, i would ask her to write the Theme Song. Did you help her with the lyrics or was it all her . We spoonfed her about the characters journey, we said shes The Lady In Red when everybody else is wearing tan. She added it to the song and came up with incredibly catchy, very new york, almost jazzy milli melody. When you heard it, at first did you know as soon as you heard it . Yes. Absolutely. What was she to do, where was she to go, she was out on her fannie she did a marvelous job, it became one of the most significant Opening Title songs of certainly the 90s, if not in all of television. In all of television, fran, dont downplay or underestimate that Theme Song. So over the bridge in flushing to the Sheffields Door the acting was amazing. Thank you. But it wouldnt have been the same without that Theme Song. I agree. Thats how she became The Nanny hbo max. Ran for six successful seasons. Youre running now in perpetuity, into eternity. How do you feel about that . To see millions of people all over the world, to this day, still love it, it just makes my heart sing. You like . I borrowed it from my cousin, miss long island, 1989. Every single week for six years and actually for, you know, 22 more after that. Everybody saw what was really the pilot episode. Ma, pack my things, he wants me back. Smile in the 80s, some people got worried that, oh, if we spend too much on the television Theme Song, people may switch the channel. Truth be told, they tend to underestimate the viewer, because with quality comes a loyalty. Shiksa, is that like a tchotchke . Yes, but they cost a lot more. Its few and far between that throughout the 80s And 90s and into the new century, we had many old fashioned things and when we saw them, they were retro homages to the old days. Like the opening of the sopranos, that song of course had already existed, but what accompanies that is the Great American immigrant story, those four scenes were each scene, the houses get further apart, more greenery in between and bigger until tony arrives at his palatial exurban thing. There are a couple of them that have no words, completely instrumental. Law and order is an example, where you simply have to have something playing while you show who is starring in this thing. That was important because they kept changing their cast. Twilight zone, the same thing. You grow up next door to somebody in a tiny little town in south dakota, and then when youre 30, you go to paris and you sit down in the cafe and there is the person that you grew up next door in your small town in south dakota. You could say, what is the likelihood or the odds of this . Or you could go, doodoodoodoo and that says everything. Those Theme Songs transcended not only The Shows that they were associated with. They transcended music itself. They became part of the language. My favorite martian, my three sons, curb your enthusiasm, they dont have any lyrics but they set up the tone of The Show immediately. Outer limits, mission impossible, hawaii fiveoh, its amazing how these songs influenced us. Before i was writing scores, you would see a black show but you wouldnt really hear a black show. Think about what you could think about when youre not thinking about weeds. It would be cool to ride a horse on the moon. Hey lily, i need a new Wireless Plan for my business, but all my employees need something different. Oh, we can help with that. Okay, imagine this. Your mover, rob, hes on the scene and needs a plan with a mobile hotspot. We cut to downtown, your Sales Rep Lisa has to send some files, asap so basically i can pick the right plan for each employee. Yeah i shouldve just led with that. With at t business. You can pick the best plan for each employee and only pay for the features they need. Did you have doubts about All In The Family being a success . I just hoped for the best. I remembered sherman from purlie, when he was singing and dancing and was one of the most unique actors on the stage. The first time i went to the reading, they handed me the script and i had no idea. See, i was new in town, i didnt know anybody, i was scared to death. When i looked in his eyes, he put me at ease. How long before there was a spinoff . I think it was the third episode, they started talking about it. Were moving on up to the East Side to a deluxe apartment in the sky were moving on up my favorite television Theme Song would have to be the jeffersons. We finally got a piece of the pie the performance. Fish dont fry in the kitchen, beans dont burn on the grill the gospel choir. The pronunciation of deluxe in just the right place in the Theme Song to make it work. We finally got a piece of the pie you were home less . Yes. Living on the streets of los angeles. Walking up and down melrose. What brought you out of that . I ended up getting a Record Deal with modern records. We put out a single, did okay, nothing big. But the single that we did, livin large, was chosen as the title for a Tv Show. After that i started trying more Tv Shows. And the amazing Thing Of Being Homeless will make you figure out what your priorities are. One of the priorities had to be getting some food and start to eat. You have scored more Prime Time Television Series than any other black composer ever. Ive just been fortunate to get in at a time when there was a rentaissance of black Tv Show back in the 90s. That was really a magical Theme Song. I cowrote it with the star of The Show, brandy. It came from the music. They saw my personality and my music and they offered met part. Originally the way it went, the producers came to me and said, hey, youre doing the score but we want you to do a Theme Song. And a day or two later they called me up and said, hey, a little change, brandy is going to do the Theme Song with you. I said, oh, okay, well, well do that. And literally they put us together like a day or two later. And she came over to my place and she sang me this idea. I said, hold it, hold it, wait here. I had written a music, she had written lyrics, and all of it worked together immediately. So what would you call that . I would call that lucky as heck. Sister, sister i got My Own mind and how everybody sees how different we have come to be we recorded it with the stars of The Show, Tia And Tamara mari. In the beginning we were Lip Syncing and dancing to the Theme Song. But we actually are singing it. It was such fun, they wanted to sing the song. It was just exciting. Girlfriends through thick and thin thats about as much as i got. As you can see, im not the singer in this band. I just loved that show. Everything about it. We tried our best when it came to not objectifying the perception of black women. And our own struggles. To say theres going to be a story about young black women. We were a show that was talking about the relationship between women. Women. And between black women. And our Support And Love of Each Other. And their excitement in life and going through life and telling it in a real story. I just thought that was an amazing idea. Is there anything that you need to know when youre writing a particular song . You need to know what the characters are like. You need to know the length of the Theme Song. You dont want to write a Threeminute Song and edit it down. It is true that many Tv Theme Songs have made it into the Great American song book. But the basic Theme Song actually really needs to stick to, in the old days, maybe 90 seconds, but maybe 60 seconds when it gets introduced, then it gets cut shorter as people get to know it. Now this is a story all about how my life got flipped, turned Upside Down the first season of fresh prince of Bel Air, you do the whole song. For one thing, you needed that first season because people dont have the whole story. Philadelphia born and raised the Back Story Theme Song, Theme Song as the in the beginning there was this, the fresh prince, this is the story, all about how my life got turned Upside Down. How this guy from West Philadelphia is now in this rich Bel Air neighborhood. By the second, third season, you dont need to be giving the entire song. So it becomes completely tempting and within the best interests of everybody involved to start chopping that thing off, because then you can use that to put more promotions for whatever is on next, you can sell more advertising. I pulled up to the house about seven or eight and yelled to the cabbie theres a long version that have that very few people know, the whole thing. To sit on my throne as the prince of Bel Air ill be there for you both cheers and friends are sort of the last gasps of the Tv Theme Song as a popular hit. We remember them. They become iconic. But a pretty good number of Theme Songs that actually made it into top 40 regular radio play. And probably the greatest example would be friends. No one told you it was gonna be this Way Life always stuck in second gear, the fact that youre really getting too old for this but things havent really kicked in yet. Thats really what friends was about, stuck in arrested development. Its not a Back Story Theme Song, its not heres the story of how they met. Its the story of how they feel. The music was composed about i my exhusband. We went through a couple of drafts. But it was not a difficult process. When things are right, they sort of write themselves. Ill be there for you we got the offer on a wednesday, went over the arrangement on a thursday with the music director, cut the song on a saturday, and it aired the following thursday. Ill be there for you i remember getting in my car and driving away from Warner Brothers One Day and i just turned on the radio. And there was the Theme Song. And that to me was, wow, this is big, this is huge. Both cheers and friends sort of the last gasps of a network television Theme Song as a popular hit. Whatever happened to the Theme Song . You know, its a good question. I know. Its a crime. Why arent there catchy Theme Songs like The Nanny anymore . What happened . I think that business happened. They needed more space, and i know where we can get 60 seconds, i know where we can get 55 seconds, well take this down to five. That happened on a lot of shows. And why . Advertising. Sometimes you feel like a nut, sometimes you dont The Shows werent longer. It was the commercial breaks that were longer. Absolutely. No, they didnt give it to the every second you spend on your openingTheme Song, is a second you cant be spending on the content, itself. No problem. But its, also, a second you cant be selling to advertisers. Big problem. When did you start baking from scratch . Its not scratch, mom. Its new pillsbury plus. They kept shortening the Theme Song, right, from like a minute and a minute 45 to 30 seconds to make more room for commercials. Have you experienced that . Is that an issue for you . Yes, ive experienced it. Is it an issue for me . No. I mean, its a part of reality. You only have five seconds with five seconds, you get a lot of people think it happened with streaming, with cable. But i remember when it happened because, i remember, back in the 80s, the first time somebody gave Judy Hart Angelo and myself a script and said give us 45 seconds, instead of 60. Okay. And not too long thereafter, somebody said, give us 30. And 20. And ten. And, you know, there are people, who can who can do that. Like, orchestraters, arrangers. Im a songwriter. I cant express myself in ten seconds. I dont want to. So, i quit. As a composer and as a person, a part of the whole tvshowmaking experience, trust me, a lot of thought goes into those Theme Songs. I know of a lot of people that relate to their Tv Show, through its Theme Song. So, why give that away . Right now, there is so much to watch. There isnt, really, one thing that everybody can rally around. We spent the first 80 years of the 20th century building up this unbelievable consensus audience. And then, we spend the last two decades of the 20th century and all of the 21st century breaking that up into a million, little pieces. First, with cable. And now, with streaming where theres an infinite number of varieties. One can argue that streaming has been a great friend of the Theme Song, in that, streaming allows young people to discover and watch multiple episodes of fresh prince of I Love Lucy of any of this stuff they may not have access to, before. But the bad thing is, they may decide to watch these things but theyre given the effortless opportunity to skip the Theme Song. You know, i dont think its getting the opportunity to get engrained in peoples head, and be totally linked with The Show, as they were in the past. I mean, the Brady Bunch is one of the most popular Theme Songs, ever. Its from the 1970s. It keeps getting reintroduced to new generations and new audiences, every single day. The Theme Song is catchy. Popular, at the time. But its only grown, more so. Because 50 years later, you can still remember it because its that simple. Honey, are you gorgeous . You look just like a virgin. You know, now that The Show is having this incredible moment, again, since its been on a streaming platform. People are really appreciating the facets of it that made it um so wonderful. And i think that theyre digesting it in a whole, new way. And that starts with the Opening Titles, the Theme Song, the animation. And goes all the way through. Theres a certain nostalgia, i think, for tv themes. Do you think that there will be a renaissance . Do you think itll come back . Well, i do, only because i think that everything that goes around, comes around. Everything seems to cycle, eventually. Maybe, were on a rather extended orbit on this and, maybe, it will come back. Bring back the Theme Song. Bring back the Theme Song were on a mission, fran. Yeah. Okay, so one last thing. I do have this little show called don Lemon Tonight. Can you write me a Theme Song . Oh, my god. What do you have in mind . I dont know. Don Lemon Tonight on don Lemon Tonight were gonna talk things through don Lemon Tonight were Gonna Deal with the truth don Lemon Tonight, were gonna talk things through don Lemon Tonight, were Gonna Deal with the truth i like the deal with the truth one. Yeah. Thats it. Thats your 20 seconds. I know youre not an arranger. I need 60, don. Dry eye symptoms keep driving you crazy . Inflammation in your eye might be to blame. We begin tonight with five words that define where we are in the pandemic. Acknowledge the war has changed. Those words come from a slide presented presentation produced within the cdc, which we learned about overnight. The war has changed. Because the enemy has. The Delta Variant, according to the cdc presentation, travels as easily as chickenpox. Meaning, every person, each person, can infect, on average, as many as nine other people. Additionally, today, The Agency released the Study It based its new recommendation on, to wear a mask indoors, even if youve been vaccinated. And it showed that infections with the Delta Variant produced similarviral loads, regardless of vaccination status. In other words, even the vaccinated, who likely wont be anywhere near as sick, thank goodness, can still spread delta. The war has changed. Late today, president biden acknowledged that additional measures might be coming because of it. In
