In an hour, President Biden will announce a new offensive in his fight against coronavirus, a Vaccine Requirement for workers. President biden will order that all federal employees be fully vaccinated or submit to regular testing. He joins a growing call for Vaccine Requirements from public and private sector employers. Theyre balloting the surge in cases driven by unvaccinated people. The cdc says only 1 of the u. S. Population lives in an area now with low virus transmission. The u. S. Is now averaging almost 64,000 new cases a day. Nearly 40,000 people are hospitalized. Both of those are. Major increases from just the week before. But there are some signs that unvaccinated people are being swayed. More than 700,000 Vaccine Doses were administered yesterday. Thats way up from the day before. And the average number of people getting their first shot is the highest its been in three weeks. Lets get to phil mattingly. What should we expect to hear from President Biden about an hour from now . Reporter get vaccinated, if you want to boil it down. The president s basically been saying that in public remarks for the better part of the last four or five months. Whats going to be different is how that message is delivered and some of the policy thats tied to it. President biden will do something White House officials stayed far away from. That is to require workers to get a vaccination or at least attest to having a vaccination. If they dont, they will be subject to restrictive protocols related to covid. Its not just the policy but also the message. Weve seen a shift from the president and his top advisors over the course of the last couple of days. Theres almost palpable frustration when you talk to White House officials. They recognize theres a solution here, a solution thats free and available and a Sl Solution that tens of millions of americans have not decided to go through with. Its those that are driving the surge. What youre hearing from the president is a very hard edged message when it comed s to the unvaccinated. Those private companies, the White House sees this as a model. They see what private companies are doing when it comes to mandates. Theres a recognition right now of the urgency of this moment, a recognition of the backsliding thats been oh you coccurring. Well be watching. Thank you for previewing it. You see the folks behind me rocking with the performers for the last few hours. Before anyone could make it to that stage, they had to follow some rules. There are rules this year for entry. You have to have a negative Covid Test if you want to attend this Fourday Festival within 73 h hours of showing up at the gate. If you have received the covid19 vaccine, you need proof. Bring a printed copy of your covid19 vaccination card. You asked if Health Officials are confident. Theres always a risk. Thats what Health Officials tell us when you have crowds like this behind us. But they feel safer because the event organizers have taken security steps to make people feel a little bit safer. But if youre at home, youre on the fence, even if you have a ticket and you feel a little under the weather or have covid19 symptoms, this is what doctors want you to know. Dont attend la la. Really dont attend if you develop any symptoms of covid19 and you havent taken a test even if youre fully vaccinated. If youve tested positive for covid in the last 14 days, do not attend. Another Safety Measure put into place. Everyone working backstage was requires to be vaccinated. Now, some of the biggest names in business are requiring their employees to get vaccinated. That includes netflix, black rock, morgan stanley, saks fifth avenue, the washingwashington, Ascension Health and lyft. The head of the mgm Las Vegas is begging his employees to get the shots. The employees must start wearing masks indoors tomorrow. The regions low Vaccination Rate is not only putting their lives at risk but workers at risks for, quote, possible furloughs and layoffs. The company is offering Popup Vaccine clinics and testing and sending a reminder that unvaccinated employees that have to go into quarantine will not get paid for their time off. Joining me is bill hornbuckle. Explain to us whats changing tomorrow. Are you just sort of strongly emphasizing that your workers get vaccinated . It sounds like youre not going as far as making it a requirement. Were not quite there yesterday. Weve been on an extended education push, if you will, ever since this thing started. We remember what happened in the beginning. We were closed. We had to furlough 62,000 employees. That has not gone away. Then weve seen a tremendous resurgence in Las Vegas ever since april, may, june and each to this day in july. We have kept the pressure on. Recently and you just mentioned the Mask Mandate Tonight that will go into effect for Southern Nevada and all of our properties here, not only for our employees but our customers. And we are reminded of where we were. We have begun to step up. Were reminding them if they are not vaccinated, they will be tested weekly. We actually do daily tested of all of our nonvaccinated employees. Its something they have to pay for. Unfortunately if a coworker whos unvaccinated is found to have covid and they need to go home, they wont be paid for that time. We think education is the right tool. We think its the right thing to do. The entire community with something called Viva Vax Vegas is behind this. Vaccines are free. Theyre plentiful. Theyre everywhere. Were pushing hard, hoping and believing education is the key. Were showing progress. In the last three weeks wes we a low point. This past week weve vaccinated or had proof of vaccinations from hundreds of employees. We like where were going. We hope its successful. Im glad that youre seeing progress. I dont know if its fast enough. The Clark County Vaccination Rate right now, which is where Las Vegas is, is just 41 . I think the positivity rated the is 17 . So i hear what youre saying. Youre trying to, i guess, you know, use inducements rather than requirements. But why not at this point as we see the numbers going in the wrong direction just require your workers to be vaccinated . I think it is working. Were doing hundreds of employees. I think with an added impetus behind this week and the next coming week, were in this state until August 17th with masks. I think the county will take another view. Frankly if we have to step it up, were prepared to do so. Until that time, i like where we are. Its aggressive. I watched your interview this morning with Danny Myers. I understand what many of these companies are doing. For us, it is complicated. Were in many jurisdictions. We have had a tremendous success over the last 90 days that wed like to keep going. So were hoping and believing with encouragement because our Employee Population Base is well ahead of the Clark County number. So wed like to demonstrate leadership here and continue to push them to do the same for the safety of themselves, their family, the community and ultimately our company. Its essential. Were starting to see it really work. I listened to that Danny Myer Interview also with great interest. I got a lot of information out of that. Are you requiring your customers as well like Danny Myer is . No. Its just a mask mandate. We have 36,000 hotel rooms. We have 100,000 customers on board at any given moment just here on Las Vegas, never mind our other eight regional properties. Anyone of these environments has 14 or 15 ingresses and egresses. So youre saying youre too big to have a Vaccine Requirement . For customers at this point in time, yes. For employees, i hope our Education Program works. I believe it is. Weve got this far. If it doesnt, time will tell. One question that i have for people who say that if you dont do this and i hear a lot of managers and even citythis, if youre going to have to get tested every week. Is that so onerus . I have this belief that 20 of our population is motivated if properly educated on the benefits. Well end up in a much better place. So weve got the community behind us. Its cleared the first hurdle. I know that is a big victory for the bipartisanship in the senate. But youve already heard the democratic pushback on this. Are you afraid that this democratic Log Jam which were seeing could scuttle the whole thing . You know, i believe that we are going to work our way through this. And there have been any number of roadblocks which maybe is an appropriate metaphor when were talking about infrastructures that have cropped up in this process. But we keep on negotiating, seeking input, listening to concerns and finding a way to take that next step, just as we achieved last night when 17 republicans joined all the democrats in opening up the debate on the bipartisan bill. That bill alone introduces a lot of new federal resources to address the fact that we have neglected and failed to maintain our Nations Infrastructure for years, if not decades. And we understand that it really needs this once in a lifetime, once in a generation infusing of funds for not just Surface Transportation but also Water Infrastructure and Broadband Access and affordability. So these are really bold goals. Ill tell you my own perspective is that the bipartisan framework, now bill, goes Hand In hand with the Budget Resolution which well take Up Next week, because we need to support the workers who are going to actually be building and maintaining and making stronger our Nations Infrastructure. Well, i mean, youre not alone in that feeling. We have heard from other congresspeople this week, particularly the progressives who feel that it must go Hand In hand. Then you hear senator Kyrsten Sinema say shes not sold on that Price Tag. How do you break that . How do you win her over . I think that right now were just talking about the Budget Process that sets up an opportunity for all the committees of the senate to put together the bill. And it would serve us all well to wait until we see it and be active in the process of putting it together before determining how one is going to vote. So i urge my colleagues on both sides of the aisle to keep an open mind as we assemble that budget Reconciliation Bill. But its a twostep process. At least we have Everyones Commitment in the democratic caucus to open that process up and begin it. I want to move on and talk about covid and whats happening across the country in terms of the unvaccinated and the spread of the Delta Variant and the battle against misinformation, which i know is important to you. Your fellow wisconsin leader, Ron Johnson, is peddling some of the misinformation. Let me just read to you what he said this week in an official statement. Do masks even work . Do they do more harm than good, hes asking, particularly to children who have a low risk of serious Death Or Disease from covid. Remember the initial goal of the Public Policy was to flatten the curve so we wouldnt overwhelm hospitals. Time to let americans, not federal agencies, make decisions for themselves. You know, i think the responsibility of leaders is to speak the truth and to help share the Evidence And Science thats out there. I have been throughout this period of time as the Delta Variant has begun to rage through our country and certainly the numbers in wisconsin are quite alarming. We had 794 new cases yesterday, 900 some the day before. We havent seen these Numbers Sense early april. W what it shows is that vaccines and maksks make a difference. I am urging all residents of wisconsin that this is your opportunity to not only prevent yourself from getting very sick and being hospitalized, ventilated and maybe dying, but also to help your Loved Ones and your community. Had we all gotten vaccinated at very high rates right away, we could have stamped out the entire coronavirus. There would be nowhere for that virus to turn, if you will. But because so many people do not have immunities because of failure to be vaccinated, there is still a significant percentage of our population where that virus and then you have senator Ron Johnson whos wondering if Masks Work . Research presented at an international alzheimers conference says the virus may leave older adults with alzheimerslike symptoms such as Forgetfulness And Brain fog. What did they say . Its interesting. Were a year and a half into this pandemic and were still learning more about this disease. There are two studies that were presented at the alzheimers association international conference that are getting attention here. In one of those studies researchers found that in a group of more than 200 older adults with covid19, about half of them experienced Forg Forgetfulness and about a quarter experienced additional cognitive problems. In a separate Study Researchers found among more than 300 covid19 patients, about half of them had neurological symptoms. In that first study, researchers found those symptoms of forgetfulness lasted about three to six months. Then in the second study with the 158 patients who had neurological symptoms, researchers found a connection to alzheimers disease. They looked at Blood Plasma samples collected from those patients and found elevated levels of certain biomarkers that are typically associated with dementia. In alzheimers one protein can accumulate and build tangles and neurons which is a hallmark of the disease. Researchers are quick to say this does not mean covid19 causes alzheimers. This is still early research. It was just presented. It hasnt even published. Researchers are saying these similarities and a potential association between covid symptoms and alzheimers symptoms requires more research. Its especially important to take a closer look at what these similarities could mean. Thank you for all that information. So in light of the cdcs revised Mask Guidelines the texas Teachers Association is asking its republican governor to require masks in schools, but in may Governor Abbott signed an Executive Order banning all Mask Requirements in schools. Cases are surging statewide. More than 10,000 new infections reported yesterday alone. More than 8,000 of those were tied to the Delta Variant. Hospitalizations there are up 150 since june and only 52 of the state is fully vaccinated. After the cdc released its revised guidance she released a Statement Saying if Governor Abbott really cares about the Health And Safety of texas students he will give local communities the option of requiring masks in their schools. Thank you very much for joining us. Mask mandates, back in may the governor made them illegal in texas. School starts in three weeks. What does this mean for teachers there . We are back to the same place we were in the springtime. Theres a lot of anxiety and fear. We are asking the governor to do the right thing and change his mind. In may things were looking a little bit better. We were hopeful that we were trying to get out of this and, but the reality is we are not and cases are going up and our students and educators are going to be put in a risk they dont need to be put in. Have you heard from the governor for your request . The governor is not listening or talking to educators. He has not been doing that for the past year and a half weve been through this pandemic. Im hoping he listens to not just our educators but our parents who are worried about our students and starts to listen to us. What does this mean in real world terms . If there is a covid Outbreak Or Cluster of some kind at a school, is there a chance they would have to go back to remote virtual learning . There are a lot of questions in what will happen. One thing for sure is that if School Districts can find the money and can offer remote learning, thats available. But its not going to happen everywhere. Our legislature did not fund remote learning so thats not an option in most of the places. If there is a Covid Outbreak we cant even say in this building where we have hundreds of people infected we need to wear masks. Thats how far our hands are tied as far as making sure that our schools are safe. So in other words, if there is a Covid Outbreak at a school, you cant require masks and you dont know if kids would go back to remote learning . You just dont know what would happen basically . No. We cannot require masks. We know that especially not elementary schools, our students are not vaccinated. We are trying to ensure that we get our local School Districts to have local control. Texas loves that. And create rules that are going to keep us safe when we need them. Not a mandate for everybody. But if the school sees that Theres Danger coming, they should be able to react. And our governor is saying no. Here is what Governor Abbott said about this last week. He says kids will not be forced by government or by schools to wear a mask in school. They can be by parental choice wear a mask but there will be no Government Mandate requiring masks. Does he have a point that this should be up to parents . If hes really listening to parents, then he should allow School Districts to be able to enforce the masks. We have parents with real concerns about their immunocompromised students or Family Members that will die if they get this disease. And hes not listening to any of us, not the educators, the parents or the students. As an educator, me, if i have a student that their family wants them to wear a mask, they want to wear a mask, but theyre seeing other kids not wear a mask, the Peer Pressure of Itting Fitting In is going to overtake the safety of it. Governor abbott can stop that right now and allow School Districts to create a rule that everybody can follow that doesnt have any questions in the mix and keep everybody safe, but hes refusing to do that. What do you think is going to happen over the next three weeks . Right now we have started a campaign to get our parents, our educators, our community to write a letter to the governor, to call the governor to let him know why it is they want the rules to be able to be enforced in our School Districts. Were very hopeful that he listens to not just our concerns but the science as well. What were fearful is that we are going to be in classrooms where we are going to have that student that does get too sick, that does die and it all could have been prevented. Thank you. Dr. John ducky is a psychologist who specializes in teens, parents and families, the author of the new Book Parenting the new teen in the age of Anxiety And Dr. Duffy joins us now. Im so excited to talk to you about this. Just yesterday last night, i was having a conversation with my three teenagers about the simone Biles Episode, but i couldnt figure out what the Teachable Moment was. I mean, i Cant Figure out what the lesson were supposed to draw from this is. Are you supposed to stick it out and soldier through things or are you supposed to walk away when you have a mental Health Challenge . What is the lesson here . Allison, i think youre running into what a lot of us are running into, we know theres an important teachable lesson here, but the lesson itself eludes us. The core of it is that we attend to our own mental and emotional wellbeing even, maybe especially in high pressure situations, right . And that requires that we check in with ourself now and again. Oftentimes in high pressure situations whether they be academic or athletic or otherwise we fail to do that. We just focus on the task at hand and sometimes that emotional element that we havent been attending to, that gets the best of us. So the teachable lesson to my thinking is to get our kids to really check in with themselves. How am i doing . Am i doing okay . Do i need to tend to my emotional wellbeing a little more, talk to Someone Ability it . If we can get our kids to do that, then we can find some balance between the emotional and the physical and the emotional and intellectual and move forward. Dr. Duffy, i know this might be old school, but arent we also supposed to teach our kids to power through some emotional challenges and even power through Doubt And Anxiety that crop up, of course, in high Stress Situations . And my best example of this is Suni Lee herself. I mean, what she said about the adversity that shes overcome, she considered quitting, and then yesterday she talked about how grateful she was that she hadnt given in to those impulses. So let me just play this for you. This medal definitely means a lot to me because there was a point in time where i wanted to quit and i just didnt think i would ever get here including injuries and stuff. So there are definitely a will the a lot of emotions, im super proud of myself for sticking with it and believing in myself. Isnt that interesting . She wanted to quit, she was struggling, but she didnt, is and and then she wins the Gold. 100 , no, and absolutely, a big part of parenting, a really important thing we want our kids to know is that its important to have that Grit And Resilience and tenacity that weve been teaching them their whole life, right . Youre absolutely right, allison. This is not something we just want to forego. The lower we bring our bar for our kids, the lower theyll bring their own. Weve got to find this balance between encouraging them and pressing them to do their very best while also attending to their emotional wellbeing. And if they fail to do so, eventually their performance is going to drop regardless, so its important to pay attention to both sides of the equation. But we dont want to give up on pressing our kids to excel and to do well. That is not the lesson to be learned here. I mean, look, i know nothing about the kind of medal it takes for Simone Biles or Suni Lee to be able to achieve what theyve achieved, but it sounds like Simone Biles said she had been neglecting, i guess, her Mental Health and particularly this year it caught up with her. Yeah, i think thats right. You know, and i dont know her entire story either, but i can just tell you from practicing, working with young people on a regular basis for decades, that this happens all the time. A lot of young people are very type a, focus on the task at hand and solely the task at hand and ignore their emotional wellbeing altogether until its either too late or they end up in the office of somebody like me trying to kind of regroup and work through what went wrong. And i think, you know, Simone Biles made a very, very wise choice in recognizing emotionally, mentally, i dont know if im ready to take this step, even if physically im 100 ready. Okay, so in our final 30 seconds, is the lesson for parents push your kids, push your kids, support your kids, but when you see something wrong, be there for them and stop pushing . Thats so beautifully put, yes. Encourage your kids. We all do it, you know, and were all going to continue to do it. Were cheering for them on the sidelines, but we also want to check in with them very frequently, how are you doing . How is your emotional wellbeing. Then wh we will never regret not doing that.
