And theyre the ones largely dying compared to others who are vaccinated. Lets talk with medical correspondent elizabeth cohen. Elizabeth . This is an unfortunate story. It did not have to happen. It was hoped if enough of us got vaccinated that we could protect the vulnerable, people who are immuno compromised. The vaccine often doesnt work out so well for them and they are not protected. But it hasnt worked out that way. Vaccination rates are so low that were not protecting these vulnerable people. Let me introduce you to one of these vulnerable people. Kimberly cooley, who lives in m mississippi. Shes there with her two 6yearold nephews prepandemic. In the county she lives in only about 37 of people are vaccinated and that means she cant get near her two nephews. Again that photo is from before the pandemic. Kimberly did get vaccinated and she posted it on twitter when she did. She said hey, lets all do our part. Im get ting vaccinated. We all need to do our part. Unfortunately, that didnt happen. Vaccination rates are too low to protect people like her. She basically has to live a quarantined life again. Shes living like it was in the middle of the pandemic last year, hardly ever leaving the house, not get ting to see her nephews in Person And Hug them. That brings us to the results of this new study and finds people like kimberly really do have a lot to worry about. It was a study at Johns Hopkins where 18,000 vaccinated transplant patients, like k kimberly, they looked at them and 87 ended up hospitalized with covid19. I know that looks like a small fraction but really that is a substantial number. 87 ended up hospitalized with covid19 and 14 of them died. That is 485 times higher than the rates you would see with vaccinated people who are not immunocompromised. Their rates at getting sick from covid and dying are quite high and its because of unvaccinated people. Brianna . Its terrible. We heard from a doctor in houston who said 10 to 15 of the patients that theyre seeing are these immunocompromised folks. If you are immunocompromised, elizabeth, and the vaccine didnt work, what can you do besides holing up and staying away from people . Can you try to get a third shot. Some people have. But it doesnt always work. There are immunocompromised people who went out and got a third shot which technically the fda would say not to do. They do it any how. It is possible. It doesnt always work. Other than that, theres not a whole lot of other things they could do. Regeneron is offering up its Antibody Cocktail to folks like this. A lot of doctors dont even know its possible. There arent a whole lot of options for this group. Kimberly got vaccinated. It didnt work. She has no antibodies. I know that he was vulnerable healthwise. And so were you. And so you decided to get the vaccine. Yes. But he decided not to. Tell us why . Well, brandon said he had done his research on the vaccine and it was not enough research going on about the vaccine. So he was not going to get it until he knew for sure that it would work. He had a lot of health issues. And i asked him to take the vaks even and he told me no. I did, but he did not. And he came down with covid. Can you tell us a little bit about what happened there and when you knew that this was going to be very Series Fseriou for him . He did not go to too many places. He had his food delivered. He had very few friends to come by. So one morning he called me and asked me to come over to help him clean. When i got to his house i said brennan, your house is clean. And he said mom, i just need you to help me with my bed. Im not feeling well. I walked out of his bedroom to get the Cleaning Supplies and he told me to call 911. And i said call 911 . He said im not feeling well. This was unusual because brennan would go to the hospital two and three times a year because of his health conditions. So when i called 911, they picked him up and took him to the hospital. I walked in to the Emergency Room and the doctor walked in after i did and he said, mr. Haynes, you test positive for the covid virus. I almost fainted because i know my childs chances of surviving were slim because of his medical issues. And so at what point you know, your worst fears were realized when you found out yes. That he wasnt doing well. And you decided at that moment that you were going to take action. Can you tell me about that . Well, i was stay ing at the hospital 24 7. The doctors and nurses were telling me to go home, but that was my son. As a mother, i thought i was protecting him by staying there. So i decided to leave on the tuesday before he died, because his stats his Oxygen Level and everything was going up. I got home, went to bed. Got up the next morning with a Telephone Call from the nurse at the hospital. She asked me, miss antoine, are you at the hospital . And i told her no, i was at home. She said, is anyone with you . When she said that, i knew something was wrong. I said no, whats going on . And she said come to the hospital. So i live in a little town outside of baton rouge, dennis springs, and the traffic is horrible in the morning. I got on the interstate and the doctor called. He said miss antoine, are you on your way . I said yes, i am. Whats going on . He said just come on. I said, is he dead . And the doctor said come on, miss antoine. I said ive always been straight with you and youve been straight with me. Is he dead . And he said, yes, miss antoine, hes dead. I was so emotional driving down the interstate. When i got to the hospital and went into his room and saw my child, and he was dead, the first thing that came to my mind, im going to get his friends and his family to take the vaccine, because i didnt want them to die like brandon did. I didnt want them to die without Take Ing the vaccine. So i decided that i was going to ask his friend and families to take the vaccine in honor of him. I have a friend that ive been knowing for 52 years, and she is a retired nurse. She is administering the vaccine for a hospital out in baton rouge. I asked her to ask a supervisor, would they be able to come to brandons memorial . They said yes. So i set up a clinic there. We had three people to take the vaccine. So what was the hesitancy on their part before . And where did he get this idea there wasnt enough research on the vaccine . He was a very bright and brilliant young man. He had a lot of friends who believed in him and what he said. If brandon said it, its correct. He was telling his friends not to take the vaccine. And they did not, until he died. And then they started taking the vaccine after i asked them to. I had someone call me this morning to tell me that they had taken the vaccine, the first shot. So, its working here. Im not going to get to the people who are dead against the vaccine. Im looking at the people who are straddling the fence and need somebody to say take the vaccine and they fall on the right side of the fence. And thats taking the vaccine. It is amazing what you are doing in honor of your son. This price that you have paid in this pandemic is just too much. And i wonder, you know, as you are try ing to get people, and youre successfully getting people to take this vaccine, how are you remembering your son . And what are you missing about him that you want people to know . Im missing my daily Phone Calls from him. Im missing the i love you, mom, after the conversation is over with. I got up yesterday, and i looked at his picture, his smiling face. And i miss that so much. Some mornings, im okay. And then some mornings, i start off being sad. But i miss my son. We hope their testimony will be powerful enough to rebut this revisionist history that you hear from some of our colleagues that claim this was a normal Tourist Day and try to downplay the significance of what happened, the most serious attack on our capital in hundreds of years. We would like the public to see and understand what it was like to be on the front lines that day and how much these officers risked their lives to save ours, the speaker and all members of con congress. I know i feel very indebted to them. Well see some video that hasnt been released before. What do you have to say about that . Hopefully well have the opportunity to show the public a video that these officers lived, that they experienced, so they can understand what it was like to be facing off against that massive crowd, some of which came wearing battle gear. They were beaten with flag polls. They were beaten with fire s extinguishers. How much they felt in fear of their lives. They were determined to do their duty. What heroes they were, how they returned to work within hours of that attack even though they should have sought medical atte attention. Ive been extraordinarily impressed and im sure the public will as well. The first testimony will be from Law Enforcement officials who were there that day. In terms of who we hear from going forward, youve been asked this dozens of times. What about hearing from the former president or calling Minority Leader Kevin Mccarthy because of conversations we know he had with the former president during that day . Even if the answer is yes, that you would want to hear from them, you would want to get their testimony, youve got some personal experience in this. I mean, how could you go about getting that . Just because you want it, does it mean that would be guaranteed to happen . Well, it doesnt mean its guaranteed. It could mean that we have to go through an enforcement process. We were hampered in that the last four years because the Justice Department was hostile to the mission. Bill barr, at times, was implicated in what we were investigating. And so was not going to enforce a contempt against witnesses who were recalcitrant. Hopefully that has changed but time will tell. Well do everything we can. Well use the tools that we have. Those who refuse to testify, the public will likely draw an adverse inference. We hope to get as much of this evidence in the public realm as we possibly can. Just to be clear, so our viewers understand what i think youre saying here is that the Justice Department would enforce whatever Contempt Measures it would take the Justice Department now led by Merrick Garland to enforce whatever can Contempt Measure to try to compel that testimony, correct . Theres a lot of steps you would take before you ever got to that. First you ask for their voluntary testimony. Then you subpoena them to come in. And then you continue to escalate the steps necessary to compel their appearance. We tried enforcing the courts. As youve seen, that could take years as it did with don mcgahn. I hope none of that is necessary. Were obviously getting way ahead of ours. But there are a number of tools that we could use and, of course, well explore what we need to to get the public answers.
