New level. You like that . I do. I didnt know if you were going to say it. I really like it. Listen, a short time ago bezoss Space Travel Company Blue Origin released video from inside the capsule of this fully autonomous rocket ship. You could see bezos, his brother, 82yearold wally Funk And 18yearold oliver daemen, having a flip around here. A little tight. They seem to be having a grand old time. It looks like it is fun. Oh. Space. Unbelievable. Oh is It Everything you thought it would be . Fantastic. Here, look. Oliver. Oh, thats great i couldnt tell if they were hugging Each Other or just running into Each Other. In a fete of engineering the Rockets Booster is recyclable. It landed back at its designated spot so it can be reused, which is a major advance that could keep costs down for future Space Travelers. We can see it right there, that pinpoint landing. I mean, anderson thats incredible. A thing of beauty for Blue Origin. I mean look at that thing. Nailed that landing. So bezos described this Landmark Moment as, quote, the best day and talked about his hope to make Space Travel more accessible for all. Youve got to do it the same way we did it with commercial airline travel. You know, we are still were not even were really almost in the barn stormer phase, right. So this is these are, you know, biplanes and theyre flying into a Farmers Field and charging a small a price to fly people around for a few minutes in the air. Thats what were doing right now. But you know where that Barnstorming Phase leads . To 787. Thats what we have to do. Rachel crane has had a Front Seat on all of this. Rachel, what does he mean . What is the next step . What happens now . Reporter what happens immediately is Celebration And Ticket sales. I was just out at the Landing Pad with bezos himself and his fellow passengers, and they were basking in the glory of that booster that made that, you know, incredible landing. Now, that was the third time that that booster has been used after todays successful flight. But back to those ticket sales, i mean we still dont know how much these are going to cost, but we do know that Blue Origin already has two flights lined up and paid for in 2021 alone. Now, the company hoping to increase the pace of these flights, but Todays Flight was really a dream come true for Blue Origins founder, Jeff Bezos, mark bezos, oliver, but No One more so than wally funk. 82yearold wally funk, breaking John Glens record of being the oldest person in space. She trained to be an astronaut back in the 60s, part of the mercury 13, but she was never given the opportunity to fly because of her gender. But that all changed today, and she got her astronaut wings. She was so excited, alisyn and victor, at this Press Conference, i mean she really couldnt stay in her seat. I was in the Front Row and i thought she was going to leap into my lap. Take a listen to what she had to say. I was going into space and i want to thank you, sweetheart, because you made it possible for me. Ive been waiting a long time to finally get it up there. I felt so charged. I was not i was just normal, normal person going up into space, and thats what i wanted to feel. Reporter so, alisyn and victor, a lot of people thought bezos was crazy to get into this capsule and go on this flight. Thats because this vehicle had never flown humans before. That was the historic first today. They had 15 consecutive successful Test Flights but none had been manned. This crew were really guinea pigs, and at that Press Conference i had the opportunity to ask bezos about what his next steps were. Take a listen to what he had to say. So im going to split my time between Blue Origin and the Bezos Earth Fund. The Bezos Earth Fund is about Climate Change and sustainability, and that is those two things. And there will be a third thing and maybe a fourth thing, but i dont know what those are yet. Im not very good at doing one thing. Reporter alisyn and victor, we do know, as you just heard bezos say, that he is leaning into his philanthropic endeavors and making an Announcement Today in that lane, announcing two recipients of a new philanthropic endeavor, an award called the Courage And Civility award. 100 Million going to cnns Van Jones and also Chef Jose andreas, going to their nonprofit of choice. No strings attached he says. D 100 Million going to Van Jones and Chef Jose andreas. Victor and alisyn. It was wonderful to watch. That was a wonderful surprise, even to Van Jones. I was watching and said, why is Van Jones there. I turned up the volume and 100 Million. It is like, what congratulations to van and all of the charities that will benefit. Rachel crane, thanks so much. So Cnns Anderson Cooper caught up with bezos and his younger brother, mark, right after their flight. Here is what they said. Amazing. Yeah. I mean, really. When you landed you said, best day ever. Best day ever. And i couldnt pick a best part, i couldnt pick a best part. It was really i dont have the talent to put into words what we just experienced. Ill try, but i dont. Was it different than you thought it would be . My expectations were up here and they were exceeded. So i would say Zero G was different than i thought it was going to be. It was surprisingly natural to move around in that environment, which is not what i was anticipating. Thats really true. It felt like it was almost like we were evolved to be at Zero G, i know it is impossible, but so serene and peaceful and calm, floating. Reporter do you want to spend more time floating around or looking out the window, which were you my favorite part was probably looking out the window while i was upside down. The good news is you can do both at the same time. We also did, you know, tossed some skittles at Each Other and catch them in our mouth. We did some of the traditional Zero G stuff. Reporter was it different than what you thought it would be . It was easier. The thing that was most different was the view of earth. Thats the thing i was surprised by. I read a lot about it. I have read what astronauts have written about it but it was more profound for me than i expected. We see this giant atmosphere we live in. We think it is big when we are here on the ground. You get up there and it is so tiny, anderson. It is a small little thing, and it is fragile and it is, you know, kind of driving home that P Point that we know theoretically we have to be careful with the earths atmosphere, but it really makes it powerful and real. Reporter does this harden your commitment to Space Exploration . All right. Fascinating conversation there. Lets bring in Particle Physicist don lincoln. Hes also the author of the book alien universe, Extra Terrestrial life in our minds and in the cosmos. Don, i dont think i have ever spoken with a Particle Physicist so it is a first for me. It is an honor to have you on the show. When you watched what happened today, put it into context for us, what happened. Well, i think it was amazing. I mean the change from what nasa used to do, which would be to shoot a Rocket Up and have it come back down and crash into the ocean, versus having reusable Space Craft is amazing. You know, Todays Flight just shows that it is possible to take people up there and bring them back down. So im very excited. But, don, explain. To some of us it feels like this is a billionaires lark. Thats great. Im glad Jeff Bezos had his best day ever. Yeah, great day. But what does it mean for the rest of us earthlings . What is the significance of what they did going to this new frontierish, and how will it affect the rest of our lives . Well, i mean it would be just as exciting if Jeff Bezos and branson nine days ago werent in the capsule. What matters is we were able, or that they were able to bring people up and bring them down. Now, The Real Thing is that it reduces the cost of flying in space by a huge amount. For instance, Nasas Space Krkr craft, you know, they shoot them up once and land in the ocean. It is kind of like if you drove to the Grocery Store and had to burn the car and buy another car to go to the Grocery Store another time. So the fact that it is reusable, it oh. Even Particle Physicists can have bad connections. Technology does not work. You hate to see it. Even if you are a particle fis tis. You hate to see it. Thank you, don. Todays triumph of science comes at a time when the country is dealing with science denial, of course, as you know in the coronavirus pandemic. So top Health Officials testified before a Senate Finance Committee today talking about the disturbing rises in cases, primarily among the unvaccinated. Look at this. The u. S. Is now averaging more than 34,000 new infections each day. Cases are surging in 44 states. Again, this is happening among the unvaccinated. Cnns Erica Hill reports. Reporter dreams of a Covidfree Summer turning into a nightmare. The Delta Variant now represents 83 of sequenced cases. This is a dramatic increase from up from 50 for the week of july 3rd. In some parts of the country the percentage is even higher, particularly in areas of low vaccination rates. Reporter efforts to get more shots in arms hitting a wall with just under half of the population now fully vaccinated, as the Unvaccinated Fuel New surges in cases, hospitalizations and deaths. In areas where Vaccine Coverage is low, cases and hospitalizations are starting to climb again. Reporter in the past two weeks hospitalizations are up 50 . Hhs renewing the nations public Health Emergency this morning. My greatest fear is that patients continue to pour in and were unable to give them the care that they need because we dont have staff or resources. Reporter nearly half of california residents are now under Mask Mandates or recommendations. In l. A. County alone cases are up 700 in the last month. Weve got kids at home or youre immuno compromised and you are thinking, hmm, should i be more cautious and put my mask on when going to indoor spaces . I would strongly consider that. It is not the time to let down our guard. Reporter new guidance from the American Academy Of Pediatrics recommend mask in schools for everyone over the age 2 regardless of vaccination status. At least nine states have enacted legislation that p prohibits local schools from requiring masks in school. Some states have banned colleges and universities from requiring vaccines because it doesnt have fda approval. Asked whether it should be required in schools like other vaccines, dr. Fauci said i would not be surprised that in the future this would be something seriously considered. Reporter a federal judge ruled indiana University Cant require the vaccine for those returning to vaccine. Opponents have vowed to appeal the decision. We have the tools to end this epidemic. It is up to us to utilize those tools to their maximum. Reporter look, we know the vaccine works, it works against the Delta Variant. The reason the unvaccinated are at higher risk because that one, the Delta Variant, is spreading so much more quickly. I want to point out, too, there was a really remarkable moment earlier at this senate hearing today. Dr. Fauci was also testifying along with dr. Wilensky. You know, we have watched dr. Fauci and Rand Paul have some back and forth before at these different hearings. It was clear today that dr. Fauci was done. He was over it. Take a look at this exchange. Is it a crime to lie to congress. Do you wish to retract your statement of May 11th where you claim the nih never funded gain of Function Research in wuhan . Senator paul, i have never lied before the congress. Microphone. Your microphone. Senator paul, i have never lied before the congress and i do not retract that statement. This paper that you are referring to was judged by qualified staff up and down the chain as not being gain of function. So you are saying. Let me finish. You take an Animal Virus and increase its transmissibility to humans, youre saying it is not gain of function . That is correct. Senator paul, you do not know what you are talking about, quite frankly. I want to say that officially. We dont know we dont know if it did come from the lab but all of the evidence is pointing that it came from the lab. You. And there will be responsibility for those who funded the lab including yourself. I totally this committee will allow the witness to respond. I totally resent the lie that you are now propagating, senator. That is not cant get away from it. It meets your definition and you are obfuscating the truth. Im not off bfuscating the truth. No one is saying they are gain of function viruses. Theyre not. Because they are Animal Viruses that became more transmissible in humans and you funded it. And you are implying that what we did was responsible for the deaths of individual. I totally resent that. And it could have been. If anybody is lying here, senator, it is you. This is a pattern that Senator Paul has been doing now at multiple hearings based on no reality. He is talking about gain of function. This has been evaluated multiple times by qualified people to not fall under the gain of function deaf definition. I have not lied before congress. I have never lied, certainly not before congress. Case closed. Case closed according to dr. Fauci. I mean it is remarkable, i think, when you watch dr. Fauci today versus what we have seen over the last where are we now . 18 months at this point, more. He is fed up. He has had it. That was juicy. You cant blame him. That exchange was juicy. Normally he is even keeled. He has sat for dozens and dozens of interviews with tough and challenging questions, and he has never i mean it was a different dr. Fauci. I agree with you. He has never been that exercised on camera. Erica hill, thank you so much. Thanks, guy. House Minority Leader Kevin Mccarthy is announcing his picks for the 6th'>January 6th select co committee. L house speaker Nancy Pelosi is not saying if she will accept House Minority leader Kevin Mccarthys picks for the select committee investigating the 6th'>January 6th insurrection. You can see some of the picks here. Actually all five of them. Some of them are former president trumps most vocal supporters. Three Election Deniers among them who pushed the Big Lie that Donald Trump did not lose the 2020 election. Congressman Jim Jordan tells cnn he is willing to talk to Committee Members about his conversations with the former president if he as asked. If the democrats say you should testify before the select committee why . Because of your conversations with president trump. I talk to the president all the time. I talked to him last week. Would you talk to them . If they call me. But i dont know why. But if they asked you to come, you would say sure, you would talk to them . Well, if they call me. I got nothing to hide. I didnt do anything wrong. Joining us is democratic Congressman Ruben Gayago from arizona. He was on the House Floor and helped some of his colleagues out of the House Chamber when it was attacked. I want to get your reaction to the list of the additions to the committee. Three voted to object to the 2020 electoral college. Two of them also signed on to the Texas Lawsuit that challenged the votes from some swing states. Your reaction to the choices . Well, look, this is Kevin Mccarthys attempt at basically bringing a Clown Show to congress, especially with the Lead Clown being Jim Jordan. This is a very serious situation, we had an attempted nurse. The fact that mccarthy is not taking it serious tells us who is in control, and thats likely Donald Trump. The fact that Donald Trump is making the call who is on the committee is disturb inbecause it is the person that should be investigated in the process. Speaker pelosi told Manu Raju that their vote isnt the decision for being on the committee. Should itt be one . Certainly allowing Jim Jordan who is a walking Clown Show on to a serious committee is a ridiculous idea. It would be like putting someone of that caliber on the 9 11 commission, something i think everyone took seriously. We cant have that type of distraction with something we seriously have to investigate. All Jim Jordan does is Throw Bombs and basically obstruct for the president and the overall investigation. I want to get your reaction to something Jim Jordan said in a moment, but just so we clear this up. A vote to object to the certification of those electors, you dont believe that should be a disqualifier to be a part of the committee . I think it has to be part of it. It has to be part overall of the whole portfolio, what theyve done since they got in congress, what theyve done since 6th'>January 6th. You know, it would be difficulty think for us to start knocking out a lot of republicans because most of them did vote in a majority for questioning the vote, but, again, it is also your comportment since 6th'>January 6th. Jim jordan has been an unabashed obstructionist for the president and, again, is just not professional enough to be on this very serious select committee all right. Here is the aforementioned statement from Jim Jordan many i wi. I want your reaction on the other side. We know what this is about. This is about going after president trump. I mean the democrats, they dont want to talk about anything else. Theyve got to talk about this. What do you say to that . Well, this is about not it is about us stopping another insurrection, and it is not just Donald Trump. It is the enablers like Jim Jordan, like stephen millers, the people that were in the media, in the Punditry World that helped build up the insurrection of 6th'>January 6th. So it is not just about Donald Trump. This is about our country. It is about our country and preserving democracy and the safe transferring of power from one party to another. Thats why Jim Jordan wants to distract about this, because when we start to get down to the meat of it we will see there were certain republicans and certain trump enablers that put this country on a lifeline and nearly destroyed our wonderful democracy. This is why people like Jim Jordan should not be anywhere near this select committee. As i mentioned, you were at the capital that day. We now have the first sentence for one of the rioters, paul hodgkins. He pled guilty to obstructing the congressional proceedings. Sentencing guidelines were 15 to 20 months. Prosecutors wanted 18. The judge sentenced him to eight. Do you believe thats too lenient . What is the message from that sentence . Well, the message from that sentence, especially for many being prosecuted right now, is to try to hold out to see what you can get. I think there was a bad decision made by this judge. I know people that have been busted with small amounts of weed that are spending more time in jail, and this person tried, you know, to get themselves involved in an insurrection. The excuse that they got taken up in something at the moment is not an excuse when you are a person of that age. So im very disappointed. I hope that thats not a trend that we are going to see. We seriously need to punish and harshly a lot of these insurrectionists, or else we will have another insurrection at some point. One more before you go, congressman. This is on afghanistan, leaning on your membership in the armed Services Committee there in the house. Isis, a division of isis has now claimed responsibility for Rocket Attacks near kabul this morning. Isis, not the taliban. We know the taliban is stronger there than it has been over the last 20 years and u. S. Troops are leaving over the next several weeks. Are you convinced, are you sure that the u. S. Will not have to go back or send troops right back in to afghanistan after leaving, considering what we are seeing there now . Look, im not convinced that were mae not going to be somehow involved in one way or the other back in afghanistan. Certainly what were going to be involved this is another occupation because clearly after 20 Years Occupation has not brought any stability to afghanistan and we are just going to find ourselves in endless rotation of troops there. We have the capability to strike from afar. We have had the capability for quite a while. When it becomes a real threat to the united states, then i think we will take care of it then. But this idea that us having more troops there for another 20 years on an endless mission in which afghanistan has not stabilized itself is not in our national security. At the end of the day, you know, we have to look out for our national Security And Hope that the and assist where we can with afghans stabilizing themselves, but clearly having thousands and thousands of troops there over 20 years has not made a difference, and we shouldnt really follow 20 years of bad experience with 20 more years of worse experience. Arizona congressman, thanks so much. Thank for your time. All right. Be sure to watch Tomorrow Night as president Joe Biden joins Don Lemon for an exclusive Cnn President Ial Town hall. Thats live Tomorrow Night, 8 00 p. M. Eastern. Only on cnn. All right. The ceo of the games would not rule out cancelling the games at the last minute because of the number of covid cases linked to the games now is currently at 71. The City Of Tokyo reported more than 1,300 new covid cases today. A tokyo public Health Expert says the olympic village bubble system, which was designed to keep athletes and visitors safe is, quote, kind of broken. You see here on the screen the number of people through a Telephone Survey who say they do not support holding the olympics in tokyo. 55 oppose the tokyo games. Lets talk now about this with the former president of the international society of olympic historians. David, thanks for being with us. Lets pair those two things that we just learned. First, the ceo saying that in just a couple of days he could decide to call the whole thing off and more than half of people who took this survey saying they dont want the games there. Should they be happening in this environment . Are you saying that that survey was in japan or yes, in japan. In japan, yes. It is very unfortunate, because when the japanese were given the olympics in 2013 they were so enthusiastic. They loved the idea of having the Olympics Back in tokyo. They hosted the olympics in 1964, the summer games. But now everything seems to have gone wrong. The pandemic is spreading. I guess for some perspective, the Covid Rate in japan is still lower than it is in the united states, but the japanese thought they had this under control and they failed to spread the government failed to spread vaccinations. So you talked about the bubble being broken, yeah, i would say thats probably true. And so what does that mean for the athletes . You have pointed out that basically when it comes to the olympics, the athletes are not the priority, television is the priority. Well. This i mean just issues about their health, like what does it mean for their safety given all of that this year . Well, just to clarify. I think that the athletes are very important. You have to keep in mind that threequarters of the athletes will only get one shot at the olympics, and so for them this is a big deal to have it cancelled. That would be horrible for them. But the Money Situation is very important. Ask yourself, for example, as we said before, why are the games in July August to begin with . The last time the Summer Olympics were in japan they were held in october because that was the month that was safest for the athletes. But this time you have the tv rights, you have the sponsors wanting it in the summer. So money is an important factor, and that does make it hard for the athletes. Yeah. Considering that most of the people frankly, this year all of the people that are going to watch the game are going to watch it on television because there are no spectators allowed there. Will we have i know you have written the books on the olympics those magical moments without the Tens Of Thousands of people at opening ceremonies or the cheers at the Track And Field events . I remember Michael Phelps breaking that record and hearing the roar of the crowd. If we dont have that, will we feel the magic of the Olympic Games . It wont be the same for the athletes because i think that in many sports for example, the long jump or the triple jump, you will see the athletes, come on, cheer me on, cheer me on. Not so much the high jump. But, you know, come on, i want to hear you before i run down the runway. Youre not going to have that. But in terms of magic moments, yeah, you could have that. You know, when the u. S. Hockey team won in 1980, there werent very many people in the venue, but everybody watched it on tv and it was a magic moment. So that can still happen. But do you worry that all of these covid developments are eclipsing the achievement and the inspirational stories of the athletes . I would say, strictly speaking of somebody who is going in two days, it is concerning. Every single olympics there is negative publicity leading up to the opening ceremony, and then once the competitions begin it is all about the athletes. Sometimes those criticisms are not valid and theyre forgotten quickly, such acid any 2000, london 2012. Sometimes, unfortunately, those criticisms are legitimate such as the Rio Games of 2016. I think we have a situation like that right now where we can cheer on the athletes, but were not going to forget about the pandemic because more and more people are going to test positive. Yeah, and the concern there was zika as it was spreading across brazil. David, we have to wrap it there. Thank you so much for your time and expertise. Thank you. Yesterday, the most stunning number to come out of Cal Fire you talk about the Bootleg Fire in oregon, just south of them in california they have had five times the acreage burned this year than last year, and last year was epic worst of all time in history wildfire season. Already at this point in midjuly it is five times that big right now. So we are in a stage really where people are trying to wrap their heads around this new normal and understanding that adaptation to this is just as important as mitigation, cutting off the source of the problem, fossil fuels. Bill, you talked about how the weather there, this drought is fuelling the fires. How is that impacting fighting the fires and how much harder it will be to stop them . Reporter it is it makes it so difficult, victor. I mean in California Theyve admitted for years that when the Santa Ana winds are blowing, theres no way for humans to put those fires out. They just have to wait for the weather to change. Now that essentially has become a Yearround Phenomenon as the Fire Systems create the most challenging conditions. Theres such a demand for firefighting planes and helicopters in the northwest, they get priority for jet fuel. So it has created a Fuel Shortage there as well. Then you can imagine, you know, all of that fire retardant equipment, how hot that is, the amount of sweating you do out there while working a wildfire as well. Then there are bugs that are prevalent in this hotter temperature as well. So hats off to the hotspot jumpers out there who are doing the most brutal work we can imagine, trying to contain a force of nature that we have not seen, an unnatural disaster that really nobody in our lifetime has seen. Bill, i have asked you this before but i always wonder about it, how you keep from becoming decemb despondent when you are on your beat, when you are there on the ground and you see all of this. Are there things to give us hope at this point or is it just all armageddon . Reporter well, it depends on the day and the mood. I mean this is a tough one. Im no fun at Dinner Parties anymore, when we used to have Dinner Parties. But i try to focus on the idea that we are all essentially first responders, and it is our children, our grandchildren, and we want them to know that we wanted to rush into this disaster and save as much life as humanly possible. At this point how bad it gets, you cant stop the effects of this. It has been a slow Motion Thing thats been building through the industrial revolution, and so we have to brace for what is already destined to come, but how much worse it gets will be determined by actions that everyone takes right now. Everybody knows what the solutions are. It is no longer a question. It is no longer a debate. We have the technology to turn this around and stop this from getting out of control and getting past a certain temperature in which Feedback Loops make it unstoppable as maybe the Tundra Melts and all of that methane is released and as places get so dry that they turn to deserts. Deserts dont come back. Landscape like this is resilient and if you leave it alone, it will bounce back. Thats the most troubling thing. But theres no good reason to stop trying. We all have to do our part to at least make the future that much brighter as we can. All right. Thanks, bill. Thats really helpful. It is just helpful to hear your perspective on it because you deal with it every single day. Bill weir, thanks so much. Republicans say a procedural vote on infrastructure democrats are forcing tomorrow will not get the 60 votes it needs to advance. Gop senators argue this procedural vote is premature since the details of the bill have yet to be worked out. Aides say this group continues to have productive talks even at this hour. Cnn Lauren Fox is on Capitol Hill for us. Whats the latest on these negotiations . Reporter perhaps one of the clearest signs of republicans are planning to object to this Vote Tomorrow is the fact that mitt romney, a key republican negotiator has told cnn he does plan to vote against this proposal or advancing this Proposal Tomorrow unless the bipartisan group has a deal ready to go tonight. As you know, theyve been working on this proposal for several weeks. They really announced a deal almost a month ago. They still dont have legislative texts on paper. Thats a key proper. Tomorrow Majority Leader Chuck schumer plans to force a key vote on advancing that legislation when its not written yet. Thats becoming a major Sticking Point for a lot of republicans. I asked Majority Whip or Min Minority Whip John Thune whether or not republicans will block this. He said i can guarantee schumer will not have 60 votes tomorrow. In all likelihood the democrats and republicans in that bipartisan group will keep trying to work together. Thats their commitment right now. How much time will they give this deal . Thats what we dont know at this point. How many more hours, how many more days can this drag on . Time is ticking and the August Recess is around the corner. I think thats the concern for schumer. He knows he has other things he needs to get done, including moving ahead with a democratic only Infrastructure Bill starting with voting on the 3. 5 trillion budget deal. He needs to get the democrats in line with that as well. A lot of moving pieces. Democrats and republicans still dont have a final deal as part of that bipartisan negotiation. Victor. All right.
