I love it. Look at the blackness of space. Theyre so giddy. That was on the new shepherd. The first manned flight by Jeff Bezos company, blue origin. On board was bezos, his brother, mark, plus the oldest and youngest people ever to go to space. 82yearold wally Funk And 18yearold oliver damon. Now, missing from that list, a pilot. This was an autonomous craft, rocketing to sub orbital space before detaching the capsule for a few minutes of weightlessness, and then roughly 10 minutes after launch, a return that was almost as impressive as the liftoff. As the booster comes back to the surface with that pinpoint accurate upright landing. And then just moments later, the capsule followed. The parachutes deployed and the crew arrived with a soft touchdown. Welcome back to earth. Congratulations to all of you. [ cheers ] 82yearold wally funk. Talk about a spry 82yearold. Right . After taking it in and then they towelled off after the champagne. Bezos spoke to our anderson cooper. Best day ever. And i wouldnt pick a best part. Could you pick a best part . I dont have the tall dont put into words what we just experienced. Ill try, but i dont. Was it different than you thought it was going to be . My expectations were up here, and they were exceeded. Cnns Christen Fisher was there on the launch. What was that like, christen . Seeing this historic mission from the ground in person . I got to say, it was pretty cool. We all got to watch the reusable Rocket System Lift off two miles behind me, and we also just watched all four of those Crew Members officially become astronauts in blue origins eyes. Some people say theyre tourists. They say they are astronauts. Moments ago at the Press Conference they earned their astronaut wings. Only, instead of your traditional pin, they got a pin that is in the shape of a feather when which youll see all over the West Texas complex. A feather, blue Origins Logo symbolizing the perfection of flight. A textbook takeoff, liftoff. A Textbook Landing for both the capsule and this booster. And you know, during this Press Conference, we got to hear from the astronauts about what they thought it felt like to be weightless. And the 18yearold, oliver, said it felt way cooler than it looks. It does look cramped in the capsule. Jeff bezos described it as feeling completely normal. He said that zero gravity felt in a way like how it should be. That that is how humanity and humans are intended to evolve. This really fits in to this big Picture Vision that he has for blue origin, and earlier he tied it back to how he built up amazon. Listen to this. Big things start small. And but you can tell. You can tell when youre onto something. And this is important. Were going to build a road to space so that our Kids And their kids can build the future. And we need to do that. We need to do that to solve the problems here on earth. This is not about escaping earth. So not about escaping earth. Its about building a road to space for future generations. One more thing, ana. I know a lot of Space Journal is are kind of frustrating they didnt get more questions in during the Press Conference, but blue origin is a private company. Theyre not beholden to taxpayers and theyre allowed to do it. Thank you for that reporting. Lets talk more about this with former nasa astronaut, and also the only Nfl Draft Pick to fly in space, leland melvin. Its great to have you with us. I see youre dressed for the occasion today. What are your thoughts about this Launch Today . You know, ana, this is a great day for everyone, because it allows you to see a woman, wally funk, who outdid all the men in all the training back in the Mercury 13 program, and now shes finally getting her chance to go to space. But also a private company sending people to space. Astronauts, tourists, and were going to have more people getting inspired. The next generation of explorers. An 18yearold Boy flying in space for the first time. And so i think if more people can see the type of technology thats been applied to this, autonomous rockets that are taking off and landing, we have a whole spectrum of people that are going to be thinking hey, one day i may start my own company and build my own rocket. Maybe thats a kid from a Zip Code that doesnt usually get a chance to do some of these things. Seeing this Access And Opportunity and relief that anything is possible for all kids. Gosh, isnt that so, so true. Just the dreams that this helped to show can become reality. Of course, any Space Flight is dangerous. And for you having your experience at nasa, i mean, this suspect nasa. This is also using Brand New technology. It was an autonomous craft. Would you fly on it . I would. Right now when we fly to the Space Station on a spacex rocket, thats an autonomous docking to the international Space Station. All of this technology is being used on the new versions of spacecraft. And it saves time and resources. It saves training. And we do have people that can do fly in a backup situation, but the software is great. The technology is great. Were going to probably be in ubers that are driverless. You know . Were going to have airplanes one day that are pilotless. So this is the this is kind of how the evolution of the revolution of technology will take us even further. And to have a rocket and a capsule that can be reused, how significant is that . Yeah. Thats a gamechanger. All of our boosters from the Space Shuttle era, they were selling Rocket Boosters two and a half minutes. They fell down in the ocean. We had a barge take them back and refill them. We had been reusing the boosters but not the rocket engines. And so i think this is going to be making space more affordable. The Price Point will come down for more tourists to go to space. Richard branson is 250,000 now. The Jeff Bezos flight was 28 million, but hopefully the numbers come down so more people can have the opportunity. And also, the philanthropy Going On. Spacex is launching inspiration four with three people, one a former st. Judes cancer surviving patient is flying in space to raise money for st. Jude. I think if the billionaires want to do something powerful, its to use their dollars to help more people that dont have the resources to get this chance to get the perspective that i got from space. Look behind me. Theres earth and mars. I saw the planet going around it every night. I saw a Sun Rise and sunset every 45 while listening. Thats what blew my mind. But it inspired me to think about Coming Home to do bet tore help more kids. These are opportunities for everyone. And i just have to quickly ask, because i am so curious to know, like, what does it feel like to be traveling at more than three times the Speed Of Sound which is what this rocket, this mission ended up traveling at. And we hear from wally funk, i want to go again, fast. What is that like . What is that experience like . Yeah. You launch and youre feeling 3 gs. You feel your chest compressed and hard to breathe at times. And then youre going three times the Speed Of Sound. Youre just seeing the planet as youre getting closer to the line, the curveture of the space and seeing the blackness of the space. Its almost surreal. It does change the way you think about yourself with humanity on the planet. Because now you are one of i guess 574 people have gone off the planet into space. And these new four astronauts are some of them. Leland, a pleasure talking to you. Thank you for sharing your insights and expertise and this moment with all of us. Now to another major story we are watching today in tokyo. The Olympic Games is three days away. The ceo of the games says he is not ruling out an 11th our cancellation as covid cases rise. More than 70 covid cases are now linked to the Olympic Games. One public Health Expert in tokyo says the olympic bubble is kind of broken. It looks like the plan to keep interactions between certain people to a minimum is harder than it looks. Now, this comes as more than 1400 new covid cases were reported in the city again three days out from the games. We have more. Reporter three days before the Opening Ceremony, tokyo is trying to prevent the spread of covid19 as cases creep up among athletes and those connected to the olympics. That includes an alternate for the u. S. Gymnastics team. Shell return to the u. S. After ten days isolation. Her unvaccinated teammate is in isolation as a close contact according to her coach. The socalled bubble of the village has been punctured with several positive covid cases detected on the South African soccer team. Officials insist the village is still safe. Its clear that the only people is a safe place to stay. Reporter but Health Experts say the wider strategy of keeping foreign visitors away from locals is failing. Its obvious that the Bubble System is kind of broken. So theres a sense of interaction to the local people. Reporter tokyo officials insist they are containing the situation with only a few dozen cases among some 22,000 foreigners who arrived for the games so far. If i thought all the tests were going to be negative, i wouldnt bother doing the tests. And the numbers are lower. Probably lower than we expected. Reporter and the advanced Testing Requirement is filtering out positive cases before people fly into japan. Including 17yearold Coco Gauff who tested positive in the u. S. Before flying. And a player from the u. S. Womens Basketball Team who tested positive despite being vaccinated. Two players from Mexicos Baseball Team also tested positive. Like the delta and over 11,000 Athletes Descending on japan from more than 200 countries, fears are growing about the risks to those Visiting Tokyo and the local population. And people here are anxious about the covid cases linked to the games. And i spoke to a public Health Expert who says hes worried about the infections spilling into the public here. 20 of people in japan are fully vaccinated. The participants have to follow strict protocols. Theyre regularly tested. Contact traced. But he says you Cant Control peoples movements entirely. And these participants are not required to quarantine for a full 14 days. While most of these olympic athletes are going to be fully vaccinated, as weve seen, vaccines are not 100 , and nro are they mandatory. Thank you. Now, we have to talk about some good stuff with the olympics. More than 11,000 athletes representing more than 200 countries are set to compete. This is a chance of a lifetime. Andy scholes is joining us now with some of the inspirational stories. Andy, what stands out . Ana, theres so many. Right . Because so many of these athletes work their entire lives to get to this very moment. The Olympic Games. And let me introduce you to american Weight Lifter Maddie rogers. The 25yearold from florida is going to be competing in her very first Olympic Games. Maddie grew up a gymnast. Then was a competitive cheer leader. Then a cross fitter, now a World Class Weight lifter. He dad passed away in 2001. When she turned 18, she was given a letter he wrote that said one day shes make it to the olympics. My dad passed of cancer when i was six. I was actually a gymnast the first 12 years of my life. At the time of his passing, he left each of us Kids A letter, just so we have something to read as we grow up. And his to mine said basically i cant wait to see you in the olympics. I cant wait to watch and so that is still something i just really hold dear to me. Well be Cheering For Maddie at the Olympic Games. The Opening Ceremony the friday. The action is starting tonight. The u. S. Womens soccer time trying to follow up a World Cup Win with an olympic gold medal. No Womens Team has done it. Theyre looking to change that in tokyo. It would be an incredible achievement. It would be historical to be the first team to do it. It would be really difficult. But i think this team is more than capable of being able to do that just given the fact that weve had this break to regroup, reset and refocus. We want to make history and have high goals for ourselves. One of the things is do a back to back. Yeah. The women are going to get things started against sweden. It should be a good game. The only match the u. S. Hasnt won since January Of 2019 was a draw to sweden. It was actually sweden that knocked out this team in the 2016 rio games. So you know theyve got revenge on their minds when they take the field in the early hours wednesday morning. I am especially excited to watch track and field. Im a distance runner, so i know a lot of people arent into that sport specifically, but thats my favorite. Andy scholes, thank you so much. It is a face off weve seen before. But today, it got ugly. Why dr. Fauci just called Senator Rand Paul a liar. Plus Speaker Pelosi Today saying she is considering letting three republican Election Deniers serve on the committee investigating the insurrection. And a wildfire so large it is creating its own weather. We explain. Tempers flared on Capitol Hill with dr. Fauci. Senator Rand Paul accused dr. Fauci of lying about whether covid only nated in a lab in china and whether the u. S. National institutes of health funded related research. Dr. Fauci wasnt having it. Senator paul, i have never lied before the congress, and i do not retract that statement. And senator paul, you do not know what youre talking about quite frankly. I want to say that officially. You do not know what youre talking about. Those viruses are impossible to result and cause you are implying that what we did was responsible for the deaths of individuals. I totally resent that. They could have been. And anybody who is lying here, senator, it is you. This as we learned more about how quickly the Delta Variant is spreading across the u. S. In that same hearing the Cdc Director told lawmakers the Delta Variant now accounts for 83 of all covid cases in the u. S. Cases are now rising sharply in at least 20 states. And hospitalizations are rising as well. Almost all of those are among people who are unvaccinated. As parents prepare to send kids back to the classroom, dr. Fauci separately this morning talked about the possibility of Vaccine Requirements in schools. Take a listen. I would not be surprised that in the future this is something that would be seriously considered depending upon how we handle the outbreak. With us now, dr. Sara boat, the Chair Elect of the American Academy Of Pediatrics on schools. You heard dr. Faucis comments on schools potentially requiring vaccines for kids. What do you think . Would you recommend schools take that step . Well, i think we really our priority is getting kids back into school, number one. Its so critical for them to be there for in person learning, and that means we have to do it safely. So how do we get kids in the classroom and keep them there without the exposures . One goal of that is vaccination, absolutely. But theres even still several kids that cant get vaccinated. They are less than 12. Right. So for those, though, who are eligible currently, should vaccines be a requirement . We know that there are vaccines for all kinds of other diseases that are required. Measles, mmr, polio and so forth. Why not covid19 . Yeah. We have a long history of schools being a critical component of Tracking And Monitoring and encouraging families to get vaccinations. So they absolutely should be involved in this. School nurses are a key component to that. And so we should really be continuing to look at how we are going to handle the vaccinations. How we are going to know who is vaccinated, who is not, and what are the other strategies we have to put into place to keep everyone safe when school starts up this fall. Sorry. Just to be clear, butten it up. Would you recommend a Vaccine Requirement for those who are eligible . Well, i think this is a complex issue, and so i think that right now is that going to happen by the time school starts in the fall . Likely not. Its often different in every state. Do i think its a good idea for everybody to get vaccinated . Absolutely. I hear you. Right now we know only 35 of kids who are 12 to 15 have received at least one vaccine dose. That number is about 47 for kids 16 to 17. Why do you think those numbers are so low . Yeah. I think in general, its it was newer that it got approved a particularly for the 12 to 15, and theres still a lot of hesitancy in our community. We need to do a good job at getting out there and proving access, doing education, helping everyone understand these were studied extensively in kids. Theyre safe in kids. Its incredibly important for kids to get vaccinated. So a lot of work is still to be done and schools can be a big part of that. Wen Kids Are getting back to school, using that environment to spread that word about vaccine and have opportunities for them to get it even right at their school. And the american academy of Pediatrics Yesterday urged universal masking in schools for everyone over the age of two. Now, the cdc currently says masks are not necessary for people who are fully vaccinated. We know many teachers are. We know some students are vaccinated. Why would they need to mask up as well . Well, a couple reasons. One is practically if we really want to have a successful School Environment this fall, monitoring who is vaccinated, who is not, having some kids wearing masks, some not, that is just fraught with error. And universal masking works. We know it works. It was successful last year. And kids did well with it. They put their masks on. They kept them there. This is a really effective strategy. And so to have this be successful, just having every kid in school have a mask, well avoid bullying, stig mytizing. Theres a lot of reasons to do universal masking this fall. I can appreciate that. Neither of my Kids Are eligible for the vaccine yet, i want to make sure they stay safe. Thank you for being with us. Absolutely. Thank you. Thank you. They backed up the Big Lie. Now theyve been tapped to serve on the committee investigating the insurrection. That was fuelled by the Big Lie. . So you only pay for what you need. Sorry . Nancy pelosi is facing a controversial choice, whether to allow three republicans who supported the Big Lie that fuelled the deadly insurrection on Capitol Hill to serve on the select committee investigating that very insurrection. To be clear how people voted on the president. Af affirming the election of Joe Biden is not a criterion for service. What is the criterion . On this list is ohio congressman jim jordan, indiana Jim Banks and Troy Nels of texas. All three voted to overturn the Election Results in arizona and pennsylvania. Illinois congressman Rodney Davis and Kelly Arm strong of North Dakota are also on the list. They voted to certify the Election Results. And we are joined from The Hill now. Manu, where do you see pelosi Going On this . Reporter its unclear. She said to me there that criteria is not whether they voted to certify the election. The fact that they voted to overturn the E Results does not seem to mean they will not get those ultimate picks, but then i asked her what factors are you considering here. And she would not say. She said youll wait to hear my announcement. I said are you going to make the announcement today. She said ill make it when im ready. The only person who knows what shell do is the speaker herself. The republicans believe she should move ahead. Kevin mccarthy said theres no reason for her not to. When speaking to the republicans, its clear they want the focus to be largely on the preparations as well as other matters including protests that occurred last summer involving black Lives Matter and other issues not just what happened on January 6th. But one of the members you mentioned, jim jord issue, i spoke to him earlier and asked if he would be willing to testify before the committee about his conversations with Donald Trump and the run up to January 6th as many democrats want, and he indicated to me that he would. I mean, i dont know why. Reporter you had conversations leading up to January 6th. I have conversations with the president all the time. Reporter did they ask you what . I have nothing to hide. Reporter do you want to look into Donald Trumps role . I want to look into everything. I think its important the committee take a deep dive into it. You keep bringing up Donald Trump. Thats why obviously you formed your opinion already. Reporter im asking i thank you for your opinion. I think its premature. Reporter i also asked that congressman if he wants to hear from Nancy Pelosi himself. He indicated an openness to that. Youll hear that side of the Argument Push Bid the republicans as the democrats try to look at Donald Trump. They have all the factors there as well. But the first thing they want to talk to are the Police Officers themselves. Testimony next week expected from the capitol and metro Police Officers who defended the building and their experiences. Thank you. Keep asking the good questions. Lets turn to the senate. Patience is running thin. Chuck shiemer plans to force a vote to a bipartisan interest plan. They argue schumer is rushing the process and it may hurt his chance at a plan here. Ryan noble is on The Hill here. This sounds dead on arrival. No . Well, both sides arent ready to go that far. They are still talking. The process is still moving. The vote on wednesday could be trouble for the progress of this bill. The Senate Majority Leader Chuck Shumer is going to put a procedural vote on the floor tomorrow, essentially to test the temperature of where both republicans and democrats are on this piece of legislation. Now, schumer said he doesnt think its necessary to have anything on paper quite yet. This is just a step in the process, and that they can continue to fill out the language as they continue to negotiate. And essentially what schumer tried to do is force this bipartisan group of republicans and democratic senators to get the process moving. To stop stalling in some cases. And it seems to have had that work out at least on some level. They are going to meet today again at 3 00. Theyre essentially going to lock themselves in a room until they can come up with at least some sort of resolution. And they are starting to find some areas of agreement on things especially as to how theyre going to pay for this specific legislation. Still, theres going to be a lot on the line here wednesday if that vote does go forward. Republicans say they arent going to vote yes unless they have a deal in hand. And theyre just not there yet. Ryan nobles on Capitol Hill. Thank you for that update. The Bootleg Fire in oregon is so big and so hot. Its creating its own weather. Next. The perfect schmear of cream cheese. The heat from the Bootleg Fire is forming Storm Clouds with lightning and strong winds. That fire is burning so fast. It would scorch through Central Park in about 45 minutes. South in california there are seven large fires currently burning in more than 200,000 acres have burned there so far this year in that state. Thats more than five times greater than at this same time during last Years Record breaking season. Let me turn to Cnn Meteorologist tom saider. Tom, lets start with the Bootleg Fire. Its creating its own weather. What exactly does that mean . Well, Take A Look at this picture. It looks like a thunderstorm with an anvil head. When you have the type of intense fires that we have seen the last couple years, that rapid rise of the warm air is creating its own weather. Let me share a statement from a mark us kaufman, a spokesperson for the forestry department. He told us, again, in an article on cnn that typically its the weather that determines the fire. But now its the fire thats determining the weather. This reaches up to altitudes where the plane flies, 40,000 feet in that anvil, and, throughout the thunderstorm, they even had Rain Yesterday at a command site. Its the lightning that poses a threat. Theyre not going to get enough rain with the dry weather and the conditions to help the firefighters much. This is an animation. See the white plume at The End of the animation here . From the Hill Fire . Youll start to see the pile of cumulus develop. This smoke is into Eastern Canada up into New England now. But what were seeing with the Bootleg Fire, it has been ravaging, get this, scorching 1100 acres an hour. Its been doing that for 13 consecutive days. At a rate that would burn lets say Central Park in 45 minutes. Its now the third largest fire that weve had in oregon history. 83 large fires but in california these are just the large ones. Theyve had 5,000 fires. Over 5,000 a week ago it was three times greater than it was at this time last year. This week its now five times greater. And, again, were going to have more of these Popup Storms with the lightning really creating havoc for the firefighters even again today and the next couple weeks. Is there any relief in sight for the fires . Well, there is some rain as mentioned. Its not going to be a lot to help areas of the northwest, but the monsoon is helping. I think theres six large fires in arizona. This comes with lightning. The problem with all the extreme heat, the Heat Domes weve seen with all the record breaking temperatures are not moving much. Its slower the jetstream. The Heat Dome in the Pacific Northwest now moves to the plains and the great basin. Were going to put up with this for a while as well as the smoke encompassing northern parts of North America and to Eastern Canada as well. Well have to put up with this for a while. Well, before i came in i felt like i was about to die. As soon as i get out of here and get well, im going to get vaccinated. Reporter at Uf Health jacksonville the number of covid19 cases has doubled since last week. Sad and frustrating because we thought that we were towards The End of it, and within not even two days we are back to being just like it was in december january. Reporter the director of infection prevention, chad nielsen, tells us The Surge is driven by the highly contagious Delta Variant and the unvaccinated. The overwhelming majority, 90 of their covid19 patients, are not vaccinated. We could be an entire hospital full of covid in a matter of a month if things dont begin to slow down or vaccinations dont increase. We need policymakers at a higher level though to really listen to us, start doubling down on vaccination pushes, stop with Disinformation Campaigns on Social Media and really start helping the Health Care Community because were starting to reach a Breaking Point across the state. Reporter according to the White House last week, one in five covid19 cases can be found in florida, and only about 48 of residents are fully vaccinated. Governor Ron Desantis is encouraging floridians to get vaccinated, but hes ruled out the possibility of another lockdown. These states have a pattern. We saw the pattern last summer. It is similar. I think it started a little later, and so people should just be prepared for that. Reporter what do you say to someone who makes the argument that these fluctuations are exactly what we saw last year . Yeah, i would say that thats not based on the evidence. Right now we know the fluctuation were seeing right now is based on this Delta Variant, which didnt exist previously. Reporter and his concern, staffing shortages. The staff here, he says, reflects the general population, influenced by Social Media with fears and questions about the shot. About half of the staff is unvaccinated, he said, and many are getting sick. Others are dealing with the burnout. Seeing patients on this floor who are young and passing, it is really difficult. It is difficult to see patients that resemble your loved ones. Reporter the worst part, Deborah Wells tells us, struggling to breathe. I was coughing so bad.
