Man blasting off successfully and safely to tHe edge of space aboard tHe Hepard'>New SHepard, a Suborbital Rocket built by his Space Company blue origin. THe launch and safe return of tHe Hepard'>New SHepard, tHere you see it landing tHere in tHe desert in texas. New Hepard-name'>SHepard Name for alan sHepard, tHe first american in space. A pivotal moment for tHe space industry, potentially. Paving tHe way for commercial space tourism, at least, perhaps exploration beyond that. Next hour we do expect to Hear from bezos and tHe three astronauts that were on board of tHe capsule tHere. You Heard tHe shouts of joy as He experienced weightlessness and tHe moment wHen tHey landed as well. You see tHere. That included mark bezos, Her'>Jeff Bezoss BrotHer and 82yearold Wally Funk, tHe oldest person to leave funk and a lucky 18yearold Oliver damon. Two records broken tHere. Kristin fisHer is at Launch Site one in van horn, texas. And kristen, we are going to Hear from Jeff Bezos and tHe crew soon. Excitement as tHey landed, excitement as tHey were experiencing weightlessness. I even think one of tHem said if i Heard correctly, do you want a skittle in tHe midst of that moment. But quite a moment in space. Reporter yeah, tHere was so much cHeering, so i just cant wait to see tHe video from that. But at least we got to Hear tHe audio because you know those Work Crew members were having tHe time of tHeir life. WHen you think about what this meant for those four now astronauts, i mean this is a life long dream for Jeff Bezos, but also an even longer dream for that 82yearold Wally Funk. You saw Her walk out of that capsule with Her arms wide open, big smile on Her face and tHen that 18yearold Oliver maimon just and Jeff Bezoss moHer-mark'>BrotHer Mark. We dont know wHen tHe Press Conference will begin but i would imagine blue origin absolutely thrilled by what just happened. That was a Text Book Launch and landing of tHe Hepard'>New SHepard suborbital. Totally autonomous, no pilots on board. Not only does tHe Capsule Land as you saw tHere with tHe assistance of three big parachutes, but we saw tHe beautiful booster landing. Something which has not been done until just a few years ago, back in 2015, blue origin, tHe first to do it. Followed by spacex with a Suborbital Rocket and tHere it is right tHere, landing on that landing pad. Just about two miles away from tHe launch pad. Poppy and jim, i have to say, one of tHe benefits of a suborbital flight, remember tHey are not going up into orbit, this is a suborbital flight but tHey didnt have to eat astronaut food. THey could come back Down To Earth later and have a Champlain Celebration on tHe desert floor. I think i Heard something about popping a Champagne Bottle wHen tHey landed. Kristen, welcome to cnn. Branson and now you have bezos and youre tHe daughter of astronaut. What a week. Particularly meaningful for you. But as tHe daughter of astronauts speak to tHe awe of this moment and tHe real responsibility. What does this mean for humanity because most People Cant afford it. So wHere does it go from Here . Reporter well Jeff Bezos and blue origin Grand Vision is to some day move all of tHe Heavy industry, all of tHe mining and all of tHe stuff that hurts Planet Earth, tHey want to move that into space eventually and clean Planet Earth as this pristine national park, doan is it as a residential zone. That is many, many years away. But blue origin believe Thats Today was a very important first step to achieving some day that vision. Because by doing this over and over, tHey get tHeir reps in, tHey get more comfortable with human Space Flight and with launching pay loads and Research Experiments in to space. If you have any doubt about how blue origin is feeling and tHey were just playing we are tHe champions, so i think tHeyre feeling good about now. Kristen, thank you for tHe great reporting on ground. Lets talk about this with dr. May jameson, tHe first africanamerican to fly into space. Your thoughts this morning . You have accomplisHed so much. You just watcHed what that team did along with, i should note, 82yearold Wally Funk. First of all, it was very beautiful. It was something that for me is a combination of engineering as well as tHe will to do this in a different way. I also have to tell you that it was sort of nasaesque to me. Which means it felt very similar to nasa launcHes, right. In terms of even tHe even tHe crew clothing, right. So it was very familiar. And i think what made this really exciting is that we saw something that felt very familiar around Space Exploration but it was done by a private company. And it had a lot of sophisticated engineering on top of that. In terms of Wally Funk, how excited am i for Her. Because as part of tHe mercury 13, tHese were women who were pilots, very accomplish pilots in tHeir own right, who did tHe same tests that all of tHe guys with tHe right stuff, tHe Mercury Astronauts did, tHe women did as well or better than tHe men on all of tHe tests and yet tHe decision was were not going to fly women. And that is back in tHe 1960s. So for Her to still be around and have tHe opportunity and bezos to extend that opportunity for Her to fly, i believe it is very special and im excited for Her. Dr. Jameson, you mentioned that difference Here. You flew to space during a time wHen it was at least for americans tHe sole province of nasa. A massive Government Institution and government and military institution. App now you have not just Bezos Company but otHers flying tourists to space but in tHe case of elon musk, flying commercial pay loads and Government Pay loads to space. Including astronauts to tHe space station. What difference does it make for this to now be something that Business People can get into . Does that increase grow human Beings Exploration of space . So, i need to clean up a little bit of tHe history that goes along. So nasa is a completely civilian organization. It worked with, and we had military astronauts, im a civilian so tHere is always some confusion. I was a professional astronaut, right. But tHere is some confusion. Nasa is a civilian organization. It is worked with tHe military. THe military has its own Space Programs before Space Wars showed up. So that is really important. And tHe otHer piece of this is that we have to remember that nasa worked with private companies since tHe beginning to Help build tHe vehicles. Nasa has had control over tHe designs. So what is different now is nasa didnt have control over tHe design in tHe same way. But wHen we think about spacex and tHe reason im trying to clean this up is because this has always been integrated. WHen we think about Spacex And Star liner which is a enterprise to get astronauts to space station, nasa funded tHe nightous of that for commercial space and it was funding that Way And Boeing was funding that way and that is how we got to spacex. But what we did was to take tHe technology, tHe knowledge built up over years wHere we know how to do low Earth Orbit and get to tHe moon and all of tHese things and tHe private industry as tHey design tHeir vehicles, tHey had more latitude as to how to make this happen. WHen you get to blue Origin And Virgin galactic, tHey did this without Nasa Funding and designed different vehicles. So im excited about that. It is a continuum. And we have to understand is that tHere is a role for tHe government, tHere is a role for private industry. WHen you start to think about tHe things that we can do, how you could get different people going up, right, it is really important, it is really important. Because what we do with space, technology, with capabilities, depends on people who are involved with it. Depending on people who have tHe perspective and could apply it to things like agriculture Here on earth, could apply it to Helping developing countries map roads and chart even disease outbreaks. So it is a very exciting time. Yeah, of course. In this case you have a Forprofit And Space tourism, right, poppy, tHe opportunity for individuals and private citizens to buy a ticket to space and i wonder if you could say today, poppy, we saw tHe first commercial space liner, right. Maybe. Maybe. We know you want to go. Jim sciutto, youre young and tHey think that in tHe next few decades, maybe it is more affordable. Well see. Dr. Jameson, stand by. Dont go anywHere. Let me bring in Brad Stone and author of tHe newest Book Amazon unbound, Jeff Bezos and i remember interviewed you a few years ago for tHe Amazon Documentary we did, do you remember that and we talked about this and we talked about space. And i asked you what does bezos want to do. What is tHe goal Here. You have interviewed him and know and studied him so closely, what does He want to do from Here with this . Right, poppy. And tHe vision has been to consistent since He was a kid. He gave his high School Valedictorian Speech on his vision for space. And it was not about going to suborbital space on a trip, it was about opening up tHe Space Frontier so millions of humans could live and work in space. And this is orbiting Space Stations powered by sun and built with materials from tHe moon and this is a multigenerational effort. But today was a Starting Point and Foye Blue Origin that had a lot to prove. Because it is 20 years old. Bezos has been spending A Billion Dollars a year in pursuit of tHe vision and until today tHey didnt have much to show for it. Brad stone, does He have a plan to make this more affordable over time . Is tHere a plan, a hard plan because, listen, lets be frank, for tHe vast majority of people watching right now, this is far, far, far out of tHeir reach. THe cost of tHese things, same for bransons virgin galactic. Right. Well this is Jeff Bezos. He always had a plan. He had a plan in 1994 for amazon. And tHe plan, tHe idea is to make it more affordable. Now lets put affordable in quotation marks. Were probably talking about 250,000 or 300,000 per ticket. And tHere is a lot of risk Here, right. THey put four passengers on Todays Capsule and tHere is six seats and tHey did it to reduce weight and lower risk and this is still a multiyear path before tHey are not holding auctions and making media spectacles. Brad, i thought it was interested in tHe interview that our Hel-crane'>RacHel Crane did with tHe crew of four now astronauts, including Jeff Bezos yesterday morning. SHe asked bezos about tHe criticism that many have hurled at him and branson and said this is just a Joy Ride for tHe rich, should you be using your resources more for crises on Planet Earth right now and He said you can do both. But He accepted that criticism. And said that is largely true. I wonder what you make of that . Right. Well lets put ourselves in Jeff Bezoss shoes. Hes been criticized for two decades, Hes generally been proven right with his Business Decisions at amazon. And so Hes kind of supremely confident and i dont think He pays much attention to tHe criticism. His answer is basically you can do both. Right. And Hes committed 10 Billion to fighting Climate Change and a couple of billion for early childhood education, but this is his dream and He has a 200 Billion fortune and no one is going to tell him what to do with his money. Thank you so much for Helping us understand tHe story behind this. Well have much more on todays launch. Jeff bezos set to speak in just a few minutes. Well bring that to you. Welcome back to our special live coverage Here this morning on cnn. Jeff bezos and three otHer now astronauts just made a remarkable trip to tHe edges of space, tHe launch and tHe safe return of tHe Hepard'>New SHepard marking a pivotal moment for tHe space industry. Moments ago tHey tweeted out some stats from tHe mission. THe mission took a total of 10 10 and a top speed of 2233 miles an hour. Im zeroed in on 107 kilometers. That is key because i believe that is just above 62 miles which is seen as tHe beginning of space. It is known as tHe Carman Line. THere is arguments about wHetHer Subo Suborbital Flight Counts as space travel. But listen, tHey went into space. THey were weightless. Dr. Jameson, tHe first africanamerican woman to fly into space with us also. Former Astronaut Franklin cHeng diaz. He flew seven missions with nasa. Founded nasa advanced Propulsion Laboratory and founded tHe Ad Astra Rocket company and so a lot of firsts Here. Great to have two astronauts on. And perhaps i could begin with you, franklin. Listen, space is hard under any circumstances for anybody to get. This is a 11 minute flight, just aboof 62 miles so above tHe Carman Line known as tHe beginning of spaceal throw tHere is some debate tHere. Tell us for someone like you that have flown seven missions what an achievement this was. Put it into context for us . Yeah, well it is a great achievement. Space is hard. Everything that is done, it involved a lot of risk and im very glad that everything went well. And you know, weve gone through many gyrations to actually get human News Space over more than half a century now. But were still just scratching tHe surface. We have a long ways to go. But it is exciting. It is really exciting thing to see how space is being open to tHe rest of humanity, not just to a selected few. Doctor jameson, you have such a unique perspective on this because of your six years as an astronaut with nasa and also because of tHe work you did prior in tHe Peace Corp and serving in africa and dealing with real humanitarian Krcrisisn Earth and giving tHe duality how you see tHe debate now offer billionaires spending a lot of tHeir money to go to space . So, i think that wHen we look at Space Exploration, tHere is always been this tension about does it make any difference Here on earth . And, in fact, tHe first president of Tanz Annia said while terror trying to reach tHe moon, were trying to reach tHe village. But were anyone to reach tHe village now through Satellite Communications and remote and things so it is about who gets to be involved. I remember wHen i was working in West Africa and working in developing countries, i often thought that it was a little bit of a disconnect from my desire to be involved with Space Exploration and hightech but tHe issue was you have to know about both of tHem. That is why it is so important that we have different people involved because as i learned more about space and what i knew about developing countries, i recognized that you could use Satellite Communications, that you could use remote sensing, all of tHese things are important. You could use some of tHe what we know about refrigeration techniques. So all of this is important. I think tHe issue that were looking at now from my perspective is that we cannot abdicate our responsibility as humans, as a society, as a country, to say it is just this private group of people who are going to control tHe access to space now. We have to maintain tHe work that we do as a society, tHe funding that we do. Yeah. You know, it brings back Colonel Chris hatfields point during tHe launch, poppy, which you noted, in effect, and im paraphrasing, what do tHe astronauts now do with this. THeyve seen tHe earth from this remarkable Perspective And Tra astronauts in tHe past have noted that tHe earth from space makes earthy disagreements and divisions disappear. Right. You see tHe great Blue Marble without borders and sadly to see otHer bad things happening down on tHe surface, right. But i wonder, franklin cHeng diaz, wHen you came back and you have tHe advantage of seven visions of earth from up tHere and i imagine multiple orbits. WHen you came back, did it change your view of things down Here . Did it give you hope for ways forward . It does very much. You are a different person wHen you come back. And that is that you see tHe overview effect. Many astronauts talk about tHe smallness of our planet, tHe fact that we all occupy tHe same place. And in my case, i was fortunate to have flown over 25 years, i was able to actually see with my own eyes tHe changes on tHe earth over that span of time. THe expansion of tHe americas, you know, tHe population of tHe united states, growing west. THe deforestation of tHe Amazon Basin and tHe contamination of tHe oceans and tHe pollution in tHe air. All of those things, i was able to witness. And it does change you. Wow, as you said, tHe overview effect, it is so great to watch this even over and over again. Thank you so much, dr. Jameson, to you and to you, franklin cHeng diaz. Your experience and your perspective is invaluable on a day like this. Thank you. We will continue to have a lot more cover of what we just witnessed this morning. But we do have otHer news still aHead including an urgent warning from tHe Cdc Director that tHe Covid Delta Variant now makes up over 80 of covid cases in tHe united states. More on that next. In tHe last Week Weve seen tHe daily average up 66 , 44 stays now reporting a rise in infections. It is Move Sod quickly, just a few weeks ago it was singledigits, in terms of percentage of cases, now it is 80 . Elizabeth coHen joins us now. Elizabeth, as you know, tHe Cdc Director just shared how many of those cases attributed to tHe Delta Variant, 80 . It is only going in one direction. What does it mean crucially for hospitalizations and deaths from tHe Delta Variant . Right. THere variant weve seen, jim, spreads so quickly. Really in just a matter of few short hardly even months, really weeks it went from being a big nothing to being as dr. Walensky just told us, more than 80 . Lets a take a listen to what sHe said today. THe Delta Variant now represents 83 of sequenced cases. This is a dramatic increase, up from 50 from tHe week of july 3rd. In some parts of tHe country, tHe percentage is even higHer. Particularly in areas of low vaccination rates. Reporter all right, now to take off of what dr. Walensky just said about areas of low vaccination. What we know about tHe Delta Variant is that it spreads very fast and that it does, people who are vaccinated do have really good protection. It really keeps you from getting very sick or from dying from this variant. So lets Take A Look at Folk Wloz are folks who are in tHe hospital or have died from tHe Delta Variant or all of tHe Coronavirus Variants most of which are delta at this point. 90 of tHe people are unvaccinated. 99. 5 of people who have died are unvaccinated. Just those two numbers, you would think would be enough to convince tHe tens of millions of people who have chosen not to be vaccinated to get vaccinated. That shows you how well tHe vaccine works and how vulnerable you are if youre not vaccinated. THe numbers are so clear. We hope that message gets through for tHe people tHemselves, who remain unvaccinated and for tHeir children and for older members of tHeir family. Maybe in tHe same household. Exactly. Elizabeth coHen, thank you so much for making that clear. Well it is just three days to tHe start of tHe olympics in tokyo. One public Health-expert'>Health Expert said that tHe bubble around tHe games is, in his words, kind of broken. That is a big problem. THe number of cases linked to tHe games has risen to 71 now. THe City Of Tokyo reported more than 1300 new covid infections today. THe second higHest daily Inc Increase since january. This is exactly what everyone was praying would not happen and i would assume on ground youre seeing tHem try to deal with an unprecedented challenge. Reporter and poppy, tHe problems only continue to mount. Tokyo is still under a state of emergency. People Here are anxious about those growing covid cases linked to tHe games. And today at a Press Conference, tHe Head of tHe tokyo olympic Organizing Committee said He is not ruling out a Lastminute Cancelation of tHe games saying Hes watching tHese Infection Numbers and tHe organizers will discuss accordingly, depending on how this situation changes. Three days before tHe opening ceremony, tokyo is trying to prevent tHe spread of covid19 as cases creep up among athletes and those connected to tHe olympics. That includes cara acre, an alternate for tHe u. S. Gymnastics team. SHe will return to tHe u. S. After ten days isolation. Her unvaccinated Teammate 17yearold Leeann wong is in isolation as a close contact according to Her coach. THe socalled bubble of tHe Olympic Village has also been punctured with several positive covid cases detected among tHe South African soccer team. THey insist tHe village is still safe. It is clear, that it is a safe place to stay. Reporter but Health-expert'>Health Experts say tHe wider strategy of keeping foreign visitors away from locals is failing. It is obviously that tHe system is kind of broken. If tHere is a interaction between guest and visitors and those of local people. Reporter tokyo officials insist tHey are containing tHe situation with only a few dozen cases among some 22,000 foreigners who have arrived for tHe games so far. If i thought all of tHe tests that we did were going to be negative, tHen i wouldnt botHer doing tHe test in tHe first place and tHe numbers were seeing are extremely low. Probably lower than we expected to see if anything. Reporter and tHe advanced Testing Requirement is filtering out positive cases before people fly into japan. Including 17yearold american Tennis Star Coco gaffe who tested positive before Flighting And Katie Lou Samuelson who tested positive despite being vaccinated. Two places from Mexico Olympic Baseball Team also tested positive and wont travel to japan. But with more transmissible variants like tHe delta and over 11,000 Athletes Descending On Japan for more than 200 countries, fears are growing about tHe risk to those Visiting Tokyo and tHe local population. Public Health-expert'>Health Experts tell me tHey are worried about tHe cases among Olympic Participants Spilling into tHe local population. Just 20 of people if japan are fully vaccinated. He said it is a concern that participants are not required to quarentine for a full 14 days and that tHeir movements would not be completely tracked. And vaccines are not 100 effective and not required for olympic participants. I understand about 80 , 85 been vaccinated. Selena wang, thank you so much. Welcome back, in just a few minutes were going to Hear directly from Jeff Bezos and tHe otHer new astronauts of tHe Hepard'>New SHepard after safely landing back on earth. THere are four chairs set up tHere for Jeff Bezos, his Her-mark'>BrotHer Mark bezos, pilot Wally Funk and 18yearold Oliver damon. Youll see it live right Here. Well back Here on gravity bound earth, we know tHe names of tHe republicans chosen to be on tHe house select committee investigating tHe January 6 insurrection. Kevin mccarthy has made his five picks which include congressman Jim Jordan. It is still unclear if tHeyll actually sit on tHe committee. Nancy pelosi has to give tHe okay. Our chief congressional Correspondent Manu Raju is live on Capitol Hill this morning. Good morning to you. So pelosi, was one of tHe big republican gripes about how this was set up does have, i guess, tHe right to sayy Ay Or Nay on that. SHe would not say if sHe would allow tHe picks to go forward. Kevin mccarthy believes that tHey should. Of course tHe five picks, members who represent different aspects of tHe republican conference. But three of those members voted to overturn tHe electoral results. You see tHem tHere, Jim Banks who is tHe top republican on tHe committee, Jim Jordan, a big Trump Defender on this as someone who defended tHe president undoubtedly assuming Hes allowed to serve going forward. And tHere is also Troy Nels who overed to over turn for Arizona And Pennsylvania after what happened on January 6. And i just caught up with both jordan and nels and tHey see wHere tHey want things going. Nels wants a deep dive and Jim Jordan had conversations with Donald Trump on tHe run up and He should testify and Hes willing to do so. I mean, i dont know why. But that is why. You had conversations running up to him on January 6. I have a conversation with tHe president all of tHe time. But if tHey asked to you come, you would say if tHey call me. I have nothing to hide. Again, what we have to do is we have to get tHe community to have a Hearing next week and we start to get through tHe process and take a deep dive into January 6th and tHen form some conclusions conclusions and make sure that we take action. And republicans want to look into is why wasnt tHe capitol secure that day. Looking into Nancy Pelosis Decisionmaking about this. I asked several of tHem about looking in Donald Trump. His role as well. His role in promoting tHe Rally And Everything that He did in tHe run up and his speech that day. That is what democrats want to look into. But tHey are pushing back on that idea or not saying tHeyre willing to do that. So youre seeing tHe divide play out. It will take place starting next week wHen tHey Hear testimony from Police Officers but expect a partisan battle over this committee in tHe months aHead. Guys. With t will be that. Manu raju, thanks a lot. THe Opposition Leader of belarus said sHes optimistic after Her meeting with secretary of State Antony Blinken and jim you just spoke with Her. Svetlana who was on yesterday, asked tHe american people to stand with belarus. We was forced into exile with Her two young children after sHe said winning an election against Strongman President Alexander lukasHenko last year. Hes a prend of vladimir putin. Kylie atwood joins us now. Do we know what is next after Her meeting with tHe u. S. Secretary of state. Were any promises made by tHe biden administration . Reporter well wHen sHe left tHe State Department Yesterday sHe told my Colleague Jennifer Hansler that tHe meeting with tony blinken was warm and friendly and tHey also discussed actions in tHe nearest future regarding belarus. So that indicates, yes, tHere were tangible furtHer actions that tHe united states could take with regard to belarus that were discussed. We dont know tHe precise nature of any commitments or any promises made. But sHe is Here in washington and sHes seeing a number of folks. SHes up on Capitol Hill this week and also visiting tHe White House.
