Is a, quote, serious threat to public health. It loses lives, frankly. The biden administration is growing increasingly concerned Bts Vaccine lies as the Delta Variant fuels a rise in cases of 47 states, new infections are up by more than 50 in 35 of those states. Our John Harwood joins us from the White House with more. So, look, i mean the White House has done a lot to try to get a handle on this disinformation. Clearly it is not having enough of an effect. And it is not all on them as jim pointed out last hour, it is a lot of republican lawmakers continuing these false claims, state governments, you know, making moves to discourage people to take a vaccine and then the Social Media platforms. Well that is exactly the situation. And the answer to it is very difficult to find. Because calling it out in partisan terms, would only serve to further polarize the situation. So what youve got today is this 22page Paper Advisory from vivek murthy, the Surgerion General calling on average citizens to not forward on Social Media what might be disinformation about vaccines and try to take this out of the realm of partisan politics and make it more on a human level. Because on a human level, as youve indicated, poppy, weve got these variants spreading and it is killing people who are not vaccinated. We know that you if get vaccinated youre not going to the odds are almost infinitest mal that you would die if you were vaccinated and we have about a third of the population right now that has not gotten one shot. And so the challenge is to try to accentuate that. Not push back directly by name on Say Fox News or other conservative Media Outlets pushing this disinformation. But try to put it in the hands of people outside of partisan labelling and see if that could make a dent. It is very difficult to do. But theyre giving it a shot. The data is so clear. Literally more than 99 of the deaths now are among the unvaccinated. Clear. John harwood at the White House, thank you. As Vaccination Rates among adults fall, those most at risk now are children who at least under 12 still hasnt been approved to have the vaccine. Our senior medical correspondent Elizabeth Cohen is back with us this hour. What can we do. Jim and i have kids under 12 and we cannot control other peoples decisions. What does that mean for our kids. You certainly cant. What this means right now is that people need to get their children 12 to 17 vaccinated. That is so important. Because they have younger siblings, they play with younger children and so it is so important that those kids get vaccinated. And right now were still waiting for the vaccine for younger children. Lets Take A Look at the timeline for when we think that that might happen. So, were thinking that this is according to pfizer, pfizer said that for children ages 5 to 11, they think that they could be asking the fda for Emergency Use Authorization in september. So that means that well not have a shot by the start of the school year. Theyll be asking for an eua in september and then it takes several weeks to process that. For younger children, pfizer said they could have data later in the fall. They say for the youngest of that said, it might not be until november. And pfizer is ahead of the game here, moderna seems to be a bit behind them. So the bottom line here is we might have a shot for poppys children, for jims children, for all young children, hopefully sometime this fall. Fingers crossed. Thank you. And it must be just jawdropping to see it happen again when we have numerous vaccines out there. The patients that youre seeing now i understand are younger and healthier than those you were treating before . Absolutely. It is a little bit disheartening. It is a lot disheartening to see people come in again, with a surge when we have made this a preventible disease. This is different from the previous surges because we dropped or masking and our Mitigation Weve having a winter time season in the summer so our hospitals were full starting about end of may with 65 of our admits to our Childrens Hospital this month are rsv cases so we have a huge viral influx before our covid numbers started to go up. So a preventible disease that were seeing people not choosing the prevention is tough. The cases are younger. Largely unvaccinated. And also people who made this choice. And so they have knowledge and they have the knowledge in their hand but they choose not to take the Life Raft that weve been throwing at them. The consequences of not getting vaccinated are so clear. We just had that number up on the screen. 29 of those reported state wide since may unvaccinated, more than 99 of deaths in june were among the unvaccinated. You have conversations with people who are refusing to get the vaccine. Im just wondering, how do you change their minds . You have had any success doing that . You know, yeah, yeah, its tough. As an educator, were not here to change minds, were here to help them and make better informed decisions. So we have better conversations about risk and what it means for you and the community and in The End you have to end with do you want to see a lot more death or do you want an end to the pandemic . Because the choice for vaccination right now is really boils down to those two things. Either a lot more people will die because everybody is going to get this or will end the pandemic through vaccination. And which side of that do you want to be on . And how do you want to contribute to this process . And i hope we make the right choice. We dont have an option, well either be in this pandemic a long time and watch a lot of death occur or everybody will line up at our vaccine station. Governor John Edwards vetoed a bill that would prohibited some Vaccine Requirements for schools and educational facilities. He said it wasnt necessary and it contributed to the false narrative that covid vaccines are anything other than safe and effective. You seen some opposite moves in other states by governors right now. What do you think this will mean for louisiana and i suppose your message to other State Leaders . Im lucky to be in a state where we are allowed to really communicate with our State Leaders and we do that and have been doing that for 16 months. Im really lucky to have a state in which our Health Care organizations have worked together really well to provide vaccination in mult pe ways, by buses, by walking the streets by massive Vaccination Campaigns and weve put it out there in any way that you could imagine. So i dont think well have to go through those steps because at this point in the state understands what the best thing to do for our children, for our middle ages people and our elderly people, for now were going to focus on keeping our eye on the ball to understand that Risks Cant be mitigated any other way besides vaccination, even in our children. Were all looking forward to starting school in a normal way in august and that is the way were going to get there. But his second consideration is the court. The court itself. And by that i took it to mean the institutional integrity of the place where hes served since 1994. So hes weighing those things. I think hes here at least for the next year. He knows that the senate is democratic now. And im sure he hopes that it stays democratic, at least until the midterms and maybe after the midterms. He was an appointee of Democrat Bill Clinton and can appreciate the calculation that any president ial appointment would have, having to go through the senate. So these are all things, poppy and jim, that are on his mind as he figures out what he does next. Let me ask you this, joan, do you have for sure until the midterms . Because might Mitch Mcconnell next year say well we have the midterms coming. It is been so watered down over time, this idea of the President Appointing and the senate advising on this. It was like nothing you and i havent seen probably since we were in baghdad. And that was, were now learning, because we knew at the time because of credible concerns and threats following January 6th, the same ones that were known leading up to January 6th, i might add. But the fact that you have the top Military Official in the united states of america concerned, according to this new reporting, that the president would use the Insurrection Act and as a way to take over the military and to do away with the norms that were so fragile at that time because of the actions of the president of the united states. And i dont know if you heard this too, on that day, on January 6th, as everything was unfolding, i was hearing from people close to the pentagon that they were concerned about us in the media using the Term Insurrection because they were worried that the president , then president , would use that as an excuse to invoke the Insurrection Act. So you put the pieces together after what we knew realtime versus behind what is behind the curtain in this book. There is Something Else i want to read to you if we could pull it up in in the control room. This is what he said. Im trying to find it here. But it was really striking from the book. Another of the excerpts here. He told his deputies, quote, they may try but theyre not going to fing succeed and you cant do this without the military and the cia and the fbi. We are the guys with the guns. Its notable, especially given the comments he made a few days after the election about following law and order. No, that is exactly right. Look, i mean we also have to put in context here general milley as part of this book, it appears that there are some Reputation Refining going on. Sure. Particularly after the fact that he got hurt when it came to his reputation because he was at that Photo Op during the black Lives Matter protests back in the summer of 2020. He apologized for that, for being there in his uniform. But regardless of that, i think what the other thing that we should note here is that general milley, unlike the other people who are still in leadership and knew what they what he knew, or at least most of what he knew at the time, hes speaking out. Hes not a politician. He doesnt have to worry about his political viability. Just contrast that with Mitch Mcconnell, Kevin Mccarthy who melanie just reported is going to meet with the former president today. There is no way he doesnt have knowledge of some of this that is happening. But because he believes that Trump And Trump supporters are the pathway to him being speaker, he is continuing down that road, never mind the fact that the former president put him in danger, put this country at risk of losing its fragile democracy and it sounds like hyperbole, unfortunately its not. Dana, you speak to republican lawmakers frequently. I press them on this as well. Does any of this move them . The president every day is lying about the election. I dont repeat them on the air. He puts out statements lying about false results. Hes defending the January 6th rioters today, six months after they attacked the capitol. Mccarthy is going there to genuflect to discuss who is in the party, Mark Milley was worried about a coup. Do any of these accounts move them or is It Politics that rules . Its politics that rules. For those who havent already spoken out. Weve already seen the Liz Cheneys and the adam kinzingers. Theyre advocated for federal, national Voting Rights legislation. This as republican legislators in texas try to pass restrictive new Voting Laws and restrictions. This week prominent civil Rights Attorney Lee merit announced that he is officially running for texas attorney general. Le challenge republican incumbent Ken Paxton. This is next year. His campaign focused on Voting Rights. Merit accused texas republicans of launching an all out assault on our Voting Right and civil liberties. Joining me now is lee merit. And that is that these new voting restrictions, that theyre an assault on Voting Rights and civil liberties. You could explain to folks at home if this bill does pass in texas, how exactly will it suppress votes, either democratic voters or particularly people of color in your view . Ive heard it described as a solution looking for a problem. The legislation being proposed by the republicans is a response to when were hon oveest, the massive turnout in the last Voting Cycle and a changing demographic that is not favorable to the people in power. If passed, it will impact the data shows almost 600,000 texans, mostly black and brown constituents, in the areas where people already have a difficult time voting. And so the bill, first, it is addressing the problem that is made up. There is no evidence of widespread Voter Fraud in texas. And then it creates an Addition Incumberences for regular citizens to participate in the prot he is. To block this going through, the texas legislature, democratic members, have left town. They hopped on a plane and came here to washington. Do you believe that was the right move . I do. One of the congressmen who participated in the flight was a former legal partner of mine, jasmine crockett, a State Representative and miss crockett and i discussed the decision to leave and we said how important this was that the people of texas deserved a fight at least before they allowed the republican legislature to strip any texan of their right to vote or make it more difficult for black and brown populations in texas to participate if the process. It was a des pat move, but this is a des pperate time and im grateful to those 50 plus congressmen who went out there and advocated on behalf of texans. Joe manchin is not willing to reform the filibuster to get a limited Voting Rights act through congress. Are you disappointed by congressional democrats or the president s efforts so far . Well im disappoint the in Joe Manchin not siding with his party on this most important issue. Tomorrow we celebrate John Lewis and all of his efforts to protect the vote rights. Joe manchin has had nice to things about John Lewis and so has the president but lets honor his legacy and do whatever is in our power to protect the Voting Rights of citizens in america. We need to pass the for the people act to ensure that states can, and it is not just texas as you know, but states all over the country are offering these Voter Suppression laws that are designed to set us back and that is been a disappointment that everyone is not standing up and fighting adamantly against that. As you know, texas not the easiest state for democrats to run statewide. In 2018, Ken Paxton beat his democratic opponent then by 3. 6 points but that is that is not a giant margin. And we should note that paxton has been indicted for Securities Fraud also under Fbi Investigation for abuse of office. But democrats have been talking about winning state wide office in texas for a long time and dont quite push it over the finish line. Why do you believe you have a shot this time . Not since 1994 has a democrat in texas held this particular position. Paxton is on his way out. The people of texas are fed up with his performance. His failure to do mostly essential part of his job including checks those responsible for keeping our Power Grid online. Hes folkcused on trumps priority. The data reflects from the recent census that the demographics in texas are changing and theyre looking for people to fight for them. Ive had unusual success with republican elected officials, particularly prosecutors, obtaining the first successful prosecution of a Police Officer in Dallas County and it is not because people in Dallas County Hate Police but because it is the right thing to do. If we present the case, this campaign to texans as the right thing to do, not on one political side or the other but just practical decisions that would make the quality of life of texans better and will provide basic protections to all texans, then we have a chance of winning it over. There are some unique things going on this election cycle. Including this assault on the Voter Rights and i think that is not going to be popular with either republicans or democrats, conservatives or liberals in texas. If democrats, both at the State Level in texas but also at the national level are not able to either Block Legislation like what youre seeing there or enact protective legislation, do you feel that democrats will find it hard to win in 2022 and beyond . , i think they kick the hornets nest. Regardless of what happens now there is going to be a back lsh from voters that youll see a unique amount of people registering, jumping through additional hurdles if theyre able to put them in place and showing up like they never have before. I think the fact that theyre attacking Voter Rights and making it more difficult to vote is a Wakeup Call to texans and people around the country about how critical it is that they participate in the process and i think this strategy is going to backfire on them. And then you have jamie diamond, head of Jp Morgan saying inflation could be worse than people think and worse than the fed thinks. I dont think it is only temporary. A nond Larry Fink from Black Rock saying the fed will have to switch gears here. What do you think were going to see next year. Because this is hurting a lot of folks right now in terms of price increases that are pretty astounding for things like used cars. There are two different things. Inflation this year has been much, much more than anyone forecast. At the beginning of the year the fed said it would be something like 2 inflation. It looks like it is going to be 4 or 5 inflation this year. Next year, it is almost certain that the Inflation Rate is going to come down from 4 or 5 but will it come down to the 2 the fed believes it or will or will it end up higher than that. I think it will probably end up higher than that next year. And well probably need to act more than theyre going to act. How high . I have a number like 3 next year is a reasonable guess. I dont think 3 is terrible. Part of why were getting this inflation is that americans got checks, which is a great thing. Americans are getting jobs. Which is a great thing. And part of that recovery, the economy is the inflation. But i think it is going to be higher than what the fed is counting on right now. I think part of what worries me and just has a lot of people scratching their heads is the fact that we dont know because we dont have a historical equivalent. Financial markets, people bet trillion dollars on what they think the Inflation Rate will be. Theyre largely betting that the fed is right, that this is transitory and that inflation will come back to the more normal 2 next year. So there is a lot of smart people and smart money that is not at all worried about inflation. Okay. But then youve got the youve been vocal about the fact that the fed continues to buy up the Mortgage Backed Securities despite Chairman Powell saying back in april, the Housing Sector has fully recovered from the downturn and this This Morning from senator pat toomey. Listen. With Housing Prices absolutely soaring in many places to completely unaffordable levels, i have to ask, why on earth is the fed still buying 40 Billion in Mortgage Backed Bonds each month . And then you have President Bullard concerned that maybe were feeding into an incipient housing bubble. I wonder if this program of continuing to buy up these Mortgage Backed Securities is unintentionally worsing inequality because people are being priced out of these homes. Yeah, i think the fed should be worried about an overly hot Housing Market right now. I dont think were anything close to the bubble we were in 15 years ago. Mortgages are much smaller part of household financial portfolio right now. But, you know, cheap Mortgage Rates are a wonderful thing, but the Flip Side of cheap Mortgage Rates is that House Prices go up a lot. And it becomes harder to buy one, were going to start to see rents going up as well. So i think if the ted has tools, which it does have, to tamp down the Housing Market a little bit, that would mean Mortgage Rates would go up. We all hate that. But they are 2. 5 right now and there is room for them to go up and still be quite low. I have one final question for you. I dont think this got nearly enough coverage. But the Warning Yesterday from fitch that it may downgrade the stellar Credit Rating because of selfinflicted wounds because of the polarization they say, the Nations Governance being, quote, a weakness and then citing directly the January 6 insurrection and efforts to restrict Voting Rights in republican controlled states. S p still hasnt given back the stellar aaa Credit Rating to the u. S. That it downgraded a decade ago. How big of a deal is it that fitch is warning this and it is because of things that we could change. I dont think it is a big deal for the bond market. People know that the united states is going to pay back the money that it borrows. Were about as good for our credit as any country at any point in world history. When said that, i think theyre raising a legitimate and important set of issues. I dont think theyre going to that financial markets are going to care very much. Im glad to hear that. This morning a scathing Watch Dog Report said that the fbi botched the sexual Abuse Investigation of disgraced usa Gymnastics Doctor Larry nasser. Jean is here with the details. Good morning. Good morning. The Doj Officer of the Inspector General found that the Minneapolis Fbi failed to respond to Larry Nasser allegations with the seriousness and the urgency that the allegations deserved and required. It was 2015. Usa gymnastics went to the Fbi Field Office In Indianapolis and told a supervisor in the house that three gymnasts have reported being sexually assaulted by Larry Nasser. The office is now confirming the fbi did a limited followup on these initial allegations of assault by Larry Nasser. They didnt formally open up an investigation or fully document their activities. Additionally Indianapolis Fbi later said they referred to the case to lansing michigan fbi where so many gymnasts attended fsu, but the report states they did not do that. So for over a Year Nothing was done on the allegations against Larry Nasser because the only Law Enforcement Agency that knew about hims with the fbi In Indianapolis and they did nothing. And during that year, the report states, more than 70 young athletes were allegedly sexually assaulted by nasser. John manly who is the attorney for so many victims tells me at this point there is actually 120 women allegedly sexually assaulted from 2015 to 2016 while the fbi was silent. The Inspector General confirmed in his report that materially false statements were made by a Special Agent during the Inspector General interviews, that the Field Office provided incomplete and inaccurate information in response to internal fbi inquiries. They did not forward the allegations to other fbi agents. The attorney for Former Indianapolis Field Officer Special Agent in charge John Abbott does tell cnn mr. Abbott has received a Review Copy of the report and thanks the Law Enforcement officers that brought Larry Nas tore justice and hopes the courageous victims find peace. The report states that doj declined prosecution of two personnel in this matter last year. The fbi has demoted one and waiting for an office of the professional responsibility, the other retired. An attorney John Manly who has been in this and represents the majority of these victims said criminal charges need to be file and he told me last night on the phone that youve got to have accountability.
