Meanwhile Englands Association reporting racial abuse directed online at some of the teams players. And a rare display of rage in cuba will bring you protests over the lack of freedom and an ever worsening economy. For the first time in more than 50 years, italy is the European Football champion. They claim the title On Sunday with a win over england. England scored the first goal just two minutes into the euro 2020 final and it seemed the three lines could be headed for victory at long last. Then italy equalized in the second half with its own goal 67 minutes in. The two sides stood level at 11 after extra time. Italy eventually winning the Penalty Shootout 32, sparking celebrations back home. You see a Street Party there in rome went well into the night after fans gathered to watch them handle a heartbreaking defeat. You see the first major title in 15 years. The first European Championship in 50. The team has returned to italy now. They got back in the last halfhour or so where the Prime Minister is set to greet them in the coming hours. Cnn joins us now from rome. Good to see you. What a tournament for italy. No doubt the celebration will go on for a long time. What has it been like there . Reporter you know, during the match you could have heard a Pin Drop in the city. There was absolute silence. The setups in the piazzas. You dont really need to watch it. You can hear by the crowds. There was so much energy when they scored the first goal. The way it finished, the city and the country came alive. It was as if he were asleep for so long through the pandemic and boom, it was just magical. Its been a tough time for italy with the covid pandemic. Of course, everyone around the world. But italy particularly hard hit early on. I mean, is there a sense of easing some of the Pain And Loss . Reporter yeah, absolutely. I think this was a victory of much more than the football match. I think they feel like theyve recovered from the pandemic. Things will start fresh and new. There is a lot of energy and enthusiasm. Most important, a lot of optimism. People werent necessarily believing they could do it. Not believing in this country that they could pull themselves back together so it is very symbolic and i think it will carry through the rest of the summer. The celebrations will ten certainly through the rest of the week. Im sure they will and deservedly so. How many of a hero will roberto become . The italian manager . He took a team that was at a low point, built them back up. They didnt qualify for the world cup. Now they havent been beaten in 34 games. Reporter thats right. He is very much a national hero. Everybody put a lot of pressure on his shoulders. A lot of things have been written about him. One of the most touching ones is the fact that Italys Team was sort of, after the earthquake, it was the rubble. He cleaned up the rubble, the mess. He got the tallians to believe in the team again and that was especially important, to have those fans behind them. To know this italian team who had done so poorly last time they had a chance. Somehow italy believed in them again and everybody is crediting him with that. Bringing the whole country together. Thanks for that from rome. What an atmosphere. Now england also saw dramatic play at center court. Another match many were watching in italy closely, World Number one Novak Djokovic topping his italian opponent to take the title for a sixth time. With that win against mateo berrettini, he grabbed his 20th Grand Slam tying Roger Federer and Rafael Nadal for the most won Singles Titles in mens tennis. For international viewers, Patrick Snow will have much more on both those stories. Coming up on World Sport, that starts in about 40 minutes from now. And we are seeing outpourings of rage in cuba. Thousands of protesters marching in the streets of several cities, angry over economic conditions and the way the government is handling the coronavirus pandemic. On sunday the country reporting a Record Number of new cases and deaths. Patrick tells us now about the protests and how the government is responding. Reporter thousands of protesters took to the streets here in havana and across cuba On Sunday demanding change. This is something that almost never happens here, that people engage in antigovernment protests. The government does be permit it. Usually theyre shut down very, very quickly and many people are too afraid to openly criticize the government. But On Sunday it was a very different picture as thousands of people did just that. They said they were sick of Energy Shortages and empty store shelves. Many complained about the governments coronavirus response. The economy here has been deeply, deeply damaged. It was already ailing before the pandemic but now with more than a year of almost no tourism, very little tourism to the island, people are hurting. And many of the people said they were not afraid anymore. They had nothing left to lose. In front of the officers, they criticized the government, they called for a change. So far those calls have fallen on deaf ears. With you saw people taken away violently. We saw the government taken away the counter protesters that said they supported the revolution, they tried to drown out the protesters. And Cubas President , the successor to the castros, said the supporters of the revolution needed to take to the streets. Needed to defend the revolution and he was giving them an order to flood the streets to defend their government. So far, at least, despite the calls for change, unprecedented calls for change, the cuban government doesnt appear to be ready to change. The u. S. Voicing support for the demonstrations. The White House national Security Adviser tweeting, quote, the u. S. Supports freedom of Expression And Assembly across cuba and would strongly condemn any Violence Or Targeting of peaceful protesters who are exercising their universal rights. As the Delta Variant Promise new concerns of a surge in covid infections, the Drug Maker Pfizer is set to start on boosters on monday. Last Week Pfizer Report lower immune among people who received their shots and said they would seek Emergency Use Authorization for a booster from the fda in august. Now, according to the fda and cdc, there is no evidence that boosters are yet needed. Meanwhile, israel announcing, it will immediately allow third doses of the Pfizer Vaccine for people with compromised immune systems. Heres what one expert says about the need for Vaccine Boosters in the u. S. Lets be clear that for almost all folks who have gotten both pfizer shots or both moderna shots or their single johnson johnson shot, they are fully protected from covid19, even this new delta variant. Study after study from the u. K. , from the u. S. And elsewhere across the globe shows that these vaccines still work even against this novel variant. There is one small exception, and those are people are immuno suppressed, for rheumatoid arthritis, Organ Transplant recipients. We are they are less likely to have an adequate immune response after their first set of vaccines. That might be the one group that it is indicated for but right now i dont want to focus on giving people a third shot of vaccine. I want more americans to get their first shots of vaccine. Thats the problem were facing. Not waning immunity. Richard branson becoming the first to reach the edge of space on a craft made by his own company. It was an exciting moment on cnn as virgin Galactics Spacecraft detached from its Mother Shipment and then roared high above our planet. You can hear the crowd cheering behind me. This is an historic moment that Richard Brandson and his team have been waiting forward for nearly two decades. It has ignited. This is the moment that branson and his team have been waiting for. Oh i have to pause. I have to take this in. This is really an incredible moment here. The entire flight lasted about an hour with branson and his crew enjoying several minutes of weightlessness and a panoramic view of earth. Rachel crane spoke to branson about his ground breaking stoig. Reporter this flight was nearly two decades in the making and the company saying Richard Bransons Maiden Flight was flawless. And noble more excited than Richard Branson himself. I had the opportunity to speak with him about the excitement and the energy of it. Take a listen. Ive dreamt of going into space since i was a kid. Ive always pictured what it would be like. It was far more extraordinary than i could ever imagine. Going going north to three three miles an hour to being pressed back in the seat. The roar of the rocket to riding in space and the silence. And to looking out the window, to seeing our glorious, glorious, the colors of the sky, to unbuckling and floating, just literally going off to the ceiling and floating. Looking back down in these big windows, now the spaceship is upside down facing the earth. Seeing these three float around underneath me like giant fish. Get out of my way i want to see the earth and then of course, when we came back into the earths atmosphere, the shuddering as the spaceship comes back in. Anyway, just a pretty extraordinary day. Reporter luckily for him, this was not a dream. This was reality. And space enthusiasts all around the globe are celebrating. Thats because Virgin Galactic thoems will help you shaller in a new era of Space Travel. The coil saying they expect to start their commercial operations in early 2022. Thats when people like yourself and i could potentially one Day Hop a in it on their vehicle. But it will cost us. Right now, those tickets selling for around 200,000 a pop. A cost that Virgin Galactic said might go up before it comes down. And let bring in Greg Autry from florida. He is a space Politics Expert and professor at the school of global management. Great to see you. Your thoughts about it. What it means . Well, for me personally, i was on the runway in mojave, california, in 2004 when Sir Richard announced Virgin Galactic. And i have engaged and followed with the effort ever since. So this was important for me, too. Im so happy to see this success and the Tenacity And Persistence that he has applied pay off for him and the company. But this is going to be a seminole moment in human history. This is a tipping point. Were not just leaving the plan wet a Government Program and a few quasi military people. This is the moment it begins, out of atmosphere. Interesting way to put it. Lets get the negativity if you like out of the way. People are saying things like, a couple of rich guys playing with toys No One Else can afford. But you have an argument against that. Certainly. First of all, every great Invention Weve had in the past was originally something that only the wealthy could afford. I remember paying 1,200 for my first cd player. Thats not the point. The point is theyre putting their money, their private capital into something that will make the world better for all of us. By getting a lot of people up there and seeing, ive had the opportunity to be friends with a number of astronauts. When they come back, theyre changed. They see the world with no borders. They see that thin atmosphere and realize how precious our biosphere is. Getting a bunch of wealthy people to experience that transformative awareness is hugely valuable. And space does have implications for Climate Change in a good way. Weve learned a lot about Climate Change. Absolutely. We wouldnt know anything without the data from nasa and noaa. It was developed for satellites. Gps makes every Transportation System on earth more efficient, more Co 2 emissions than any technology that has ever been developed. It is incredibly shortsighted to that invest. I want to ask you if this is a sustainable business in terms of Profitability And Accessibility for ordinary people. And what are the implications for commercial flying . A lot of people have said, everybody who is super rich will go a couple time. Look whats happening on mt. Everest. Theyve had to put ladders in to get them through faster. When you do that, you march by the frozen dead bodies that went before. It cost hundreds of thousands of dollars to mount the campaign. So i dont think youll see anything different here except that Space Tourism is much more pleasant and safer than that. It was interesting to see branson had kids there as part of the media briefing. And it struck me, that is important to him the whole way through, inspiring kids to take an interest in space and its potential. I have to say ive had the opportunity to speak to all three of the billionaires involved here at one time or another. Sir richard has been by far the most sincere and passionate about what this means for the future of our planet and our people. And that just shines through every time you see it. Really great to speak wuflt certainly a momentous day, as you say. Really appreciate it. Thank you. A look now at some of the more memorable moments from sundays one of a kind journey. The Rocket Engine has ignited. I was once a kid with a Dream Hook to the stars. Now im an adult in a spaceship looking back to our beautiful earth. We are so lucky to have this planet that we all live on. Weve got to all be doing everything we can to help this incredible planet we live on. I will devote The Rest Of My Life doing that. You examined such confidence. Is there anything, just a small part of you feeling intense relief . The only thing i was worried about was some tiny little something that would get in the way. What did you see from space . What you see from space is this wonderful, dark sky and then this incredible blue. We got these incredible windows, and dave and such, they turn the spaceship upside down. So when youre floating, youre looking out these giant windows back at this beautiful, beautiful sky, beautiful earth back down here. And it is indescribable. I mean, its space, everybody im definitely still up there. Well come down with a big thump soon. It is so, so, so thrilling. A lifetime dream comes true. Ladies and gentlemen, this here is sir Richard Branson, astronaut did you guys see any planets in space . We saw a number of different aliens out there. Pretty uncomfortable. Tyler, thanks for that. Tyler mauldin there. Now that many americans are coming out of Pandemic Isolation by hitting the road and going abroad, it might be time to rethink how tourism impacts the environment. Thats the pitch from a new Opinion Piece in the new york times. The article says its the perfect time to reform the ways we travel and lays out data to prove its point. The u. N. World Tourism Organization says travel accounted for 5 of the worlds human produced Carbon Emissions in 2016. And one study of Cruise Ships found a midsize ship can emit as much particlanlt as A Million cars. The new york times columnist that wrote that article jones me from sunnyvale, california. The point of your piece is fascinating, that tourism should not return to anything like its old normal. The pandemic has presented an opportunity to reset how we tour the planet. Explain what you mean. Well, you know, before the pandemic started we were just traveling at an extreme amount. And travel is an amazing thing. I think it brings the world closer together. But we were sort of doing it people were just sort of flooding the most, you know, beautiful or picturesque places on earth, and using a lot of planes and Cruise Ships to get there, which is just not good for any of us. Yeah. And you write in the article that in 2019, according to an industry trade group, the world spent about 9 trillion, nearly a tenth of global gdp on tourism. Why this growth, astonishing expenditure, and what damage does it do . Yeah. The simple fact is, there are that people in the world are getting wealthier, especially in developing countries. As they get wealthier, they have more money to travel. Weve just seen a huge number of travelers from all over in the last ten years. Theres been enormous growth. You know, on the one hand, that is that really does sort of get people to see new cultures and understand people in a way that is positive from all of us. But i just wanted to point out that, you know, when we do it, we should do it judiciously. Theres a great cost, every time you take a Plane Trip across the atlantic, youre using as much carbon as you would save in a whole year without using a car. So its just kind of an amazing amount that you dont really consider when youre doing something that you think is for fun. There are all these extra costs to it. I guess, you know, how to affect change, though. How do you exercise control over something like tourism, which is so diverse, so disparate . How do you sort of convince the industry and those using it to sort of mitigate some of this damage . Well, i mean, theres kind of an obvious thing here, but its very difficult is the kind of global or, you know, continental carbon tax. If the United States or European Governments were able to, you know, price in the amount of Carbon Emissions that planes and Cruise Ships and other modes of transportation that we use, that they emit, we would be able to, you know, at least get ahold of that of that at least of all the emissions from there. And that would really go that would affect how people travel. If its more expensive to travel, and if there was if it was done in such a way that like we could have higher taxes for sort of the billionaires and private jets that travel, i think we would get more judicious perhaps, more careful, cautious use of all of our modes of transportation. Theres really like the End Result here is its not its not a very good plan to travel and visit if its sort of covered in Climate Disasters for the foreseeable future. Thats interesting. And thats absolutely right. And real quick, weve got less than a minute left, do you think were going to see more of what we have seen from some cities, like venice and amsterdam, who are saying enough, less of you. Yeah. And i think that what will happen because of that is people will discover other places. So that will spread people around in a way that will reduce crowding, which is a terrible problem for visiting, if youre just surrounded by other people and you cant see anything. I think those moves will help and more city also do that. All right. A fascinating piece there in the new york times. I urge people to check it out. Thanks so much. Thanks a lot. Good to be here.
