So what were really talking about here is people who were vaccinated a while ago where there may be some declining efficacy, where they may have some underlying health problems. Do you think a Booster Shot would be necessary right now . So lets be clear that for all folks who have gotten pfizer shots or moderna shots or their single Johnson Johnson shot, they are fully protected from covid19 even this new Delta Variant. Study after study from the uk, the u. S. And across the globe show the vaccines still work even against this novel variant. There is one exception, people who are on biologics for rheumatoid arthritis, who are getting Chemo And Organ transplant recipients. We know those folks are less likely to have an adequate immune response after their firstest is vaccines. That might be the first group for whom a booster might be indicated at this point, but for right now, honestly, i dont want to focus on getting people a third shot of a vaccine and i want americans to get their first shots of vaccine. Thats the problem theyre facing and not waning immunity. We are actually talking later in the show to someone who is fully vaccinated and immunocompromised and he ended up in the hospital. Just to be clear when we say you are fully vaccinated whether youve gotten the two Dose Or Johnson johnson, that means youre not going to end up in the hospital and youre not going to die, right . Thats what that means. Exactly right. After the first dose of Johnson Johnson, once you get two to three weeks out or a few weeks after the second shot of Moderna And Pfizer that you are pretty m much protected from severe disease, Hospitalization Or Death and you are 90 protected from Catching Covid at all, even the Delta Variant, which is more transmissible, which does spread more easily in general. So these vaccines still work really nicely for those of us that have followed through and gotten our shots as we were supposed to. And the Delta Variant is spreading rapidly in the states with low vaccination rates and theres one hospital in springfield missouri that was forced to buy ventilators and the current crisis was much more than last year. 91 of our icu Patients Today are on ventilators and thats shocking to us to have that kind of number, last year during the peak it was 40 to 50 of icu patients on ventilators and these are young patients that were in their 20s, 30s, and 40s and its alarming. What are you seeing, dr. Rani in the e. R. With adolescents impacted by the Delta Variant. Here in rhode island, weve been really successful with getti get getting vaccines out, and we havent seen a huge rise in Delta Variant here, but im talking to my friends across the country and my goodness, its like a bad dream. Weve been through this before, right . We know how covid spreads and what makes me so sad about this is that these folks dont have to be sick. The people that are filling the hospitals in missouri and arkansas and nevada, theyre all people who could have gotten vaccinated who didnt have to end up there. I mean, thats the sad part. People are ending up in the hospital and dying by choice because theyre choosing not to get the vaccine and you have lawmakers, politicians and people in the media who are continuing to put out misinformation about the vaccines. People listen to it and youre seeing what happens in parts of the country in those parts of the country where theres high unvaccination rates and what do you think the fall will look like . As you head into the fall where schools will be reopening . Im quite worried about the fall. Misinformation is everywhere even today in my own e. R. , i had a conversation with a patient and their Family Member who had heard some of these lies about vaccines and we were able to correct them and get them ready to get a vaccine, but it takes those oneonone conversations. Theres also misinformation and people think that because youre young that youre somehow not going to get very sick and your questions about schools is exactly what worries me. There are some schools that wont let Kids Wear masks in schools. Ill tell you, ive got a 9yearold. You better believe hell wear a mask in school if hes not vaccinated yet. Kids deserve to be back in school, but they also deserve to be safe and there are ways to do that, but its about masks and vaccines for whom its approved. Because again, this virus and its crazy that i even have to repeat this, but its not just about you, right . Words are your thing. Its, like, after that experience how do you wake up and go through a regular day once you have been to space . But you know, its funny, as a former astronaut said recently, look, if youre on earth youre in space, but all of this puts more attention on the importance of more people getting this opportunity to go into space. How do you think today represents that . The importance of people that arent trained astronauts. Obviously, in this case hes a billionaire and were not all billion ashgs unfortunately and why is it so important for everyday people to get this opportunity . Why is it important for us to get on Southwest Airlines and fly back in the 20s when aviation was young, it was all the millionaires who flew. No one else could afford it. We couldnt imagine flying at minimal expense across the country or across oceans. Today we do it without even thinking twice. We might complain about taking our shoes off at the airport or the internet connectivity. Imagine. That you couldnt have imagined all that not too long ago in The Grand Scheme of things. So you have to wonder what this moment means in the future. Space is a little harder than aviation. It had a Builtin Stintcy for commerce and war. So it progressed a little more rapidly than space has. But i still think the ability to get there and be in space is going to open up an economy that we cant fully imagine just yet. And you pointed out a good thing. Well all be able to go to space potentially and look back and see this fragile planet and appreciate it in a way we may all take for granted. And so interesting talk to the former Astronaut Yesterday who talked about being able to look down at our beautiful planet, see it like. That you come back Down To Earth and you have a different perspective, a transformed perspective. And i think that carries a lot of value. So lets talk about this sort of battle of the billionaires. Branson went up today. Jeff bezos and his blue Origin Team will launch in nine days. How are those two spacecraft different . There are quite a few significant differences here as we look at the battle of the billionaires. The billionaires have done little to dispel this because i think it is good company. I think the media has enjoyed this. It is not really a competition. They all have concurrent goals and theyre not really robbing Each Other of customers necessarily. What you have with branson is a mini space shuttle, a space plane. It has its first stage is that Mother Ship we call eve that takes to it about 40,000 feet and off it goes to space and it lands like a glider. That was pretty much the spuace shuttle profile. It needs two pilots. There is no crew escape system. That shuttle didnt have that either. Jeff bezos has a rocket that will take a capsule to space directly, much shorter trim to space. You wont be spending 30, 40 minutes trying to get to altitude on that plane. And critically, it has a crew escape system. In other words, the capsule can separate from the Rocket Stack if something goes wrong. And heres the one that maybe people would be a little uncomfortable with, maybe not. There are no pilots on board. It is all completely autonomous, all completely flown remotely from the ground and using Artificial Intelligence computers. We hate to admit this. We usually the weak link in the chain. So taking the pilots out of it adds a measure of safety. Once you get used to that idea. Wow yeah, but i would still be nervous. You heard there Donald Trump running through same old lines, same old Lies Today calling the election that he lost rigged. He won the Straw Poll at cpac. But the question is does it mean anything . How do the Straw Poll results and what were seeing on the ground relate to Real Life . Well, look. It is the most conservative element of the Republican Party. In this case, it is really supported by polling. There is no question that the Trump Faction within the Republican Party remains the dominant branch. Three quarters of republicans say the election was stolen, roughly only a fifth to a quarter say that trump did anything wrong on January 6th. This is not just an expression of attitude. This is actually driving policy. You look at what happened, as we talked about many times in these red states across the country where they are making it harder to vote and for political appointees, as a direct outcome of the republicans, as is the Lock Step Resistance of congress to a full accounting of what happened January 6th. This is reality of what the Republican Party is. There is another part of the coalition that is uneasy with all of this. So far theyve been willing to give their votes and remain Sub Servient to an antidemocratic wing growing in strength. And it was so fantasticing, where if he is the results are bad, it was fake and it is good, it is the best ever. He just told his game and people just laugh at that. But yet they still believe him on these lies. They follow him about the lies of the election and so forth. I think he is pushing against an open door. He has further crystallized the reality. They are most hostile to the Way America is changing demographically, culturally, demographically. They believe america as they have known it is being taken away from them by this diverse urban secular democratic coalition. So it is a very small step from feeling the america you know is being stolen to believing it is literally being stolen. For those voters that they are no longer the majority of the country is simply inconceivable. 90 of trump voters in polling by a conservative Think Tank said christianity in america is under assault. Three quarters say discrimination against whites is now as Big A problem as discrimination against minorities. So when trump says the election was stolen, he is confirming a much larger belief that the country as they know is it being stolen. And thats the essence of his bond to his voters. And something that wont go away even if he personally doesnt run in 2024. Everything they think is right in the country is being stolen from them. The recommendation of that. It is not just at cpac thats preoccupied with election fraud. Check out these ads being run by republican down ballot candidates. The left wants to keep lying and cheating. Whenever i see those ads or what doni was showing in those interviews, my first thought is not about republicans. It is about democrats. Joe manchin and Kirsten Sinema is saying that washington should only act to reverse the assault on Voting Rights if ten senate democrats agree. You realize how implausible it is, that given the way the party is rallying around this idea that stolen elections the crystallizing point of a stolen america, that there will ever be one or two much less ten senate republicans willing to buck that. It is either to protect Minority Rights in the Country Or Minority input in the senate. And every time you see the interviews, you real ties standard that they are setting, that washington should only act to restrain republicans in states if republicans in washington agree. How implausible it is that would ever be met. This week was the anniversary of the 14th Amendment being ratified by the states. If the Manchin Sinema Standard was in place, it never would have become law. Every democrat in both chambers of congress voted against it as they did against the 15 amendment and others. And yet they understood that what was being debated was important enough to do it alone. Thats where democrats may find. They in the next few weeks in congress.
