As concerns about the Delta Variant grow here weve learned a rise in infections in japan means there will not be no spect atsors for the olympics coming up. The japanese Prime Minister issued a State Of Emergency in tokyo covering the entire 16 days of the games. Experts have, quote, no choice but to hold the games in a limited way. Cnns Selena Wang joins me now live from tokyo. There is a lot of debate going into this And back And forth frankly. What finally put tokyo officials Over The Edge . Reporter well, jim, honestly this comes as a huge relief to the public here to experts who for months have been advising the government to host games without any spectators. Now earlier they said that up to 10,000 people would be allowed at each Olympic Venue but now the massive surge of cases in japan has given organizers no choice. They say tokyo dealing with a spike cases reaching the highest level in months as more cases are being driven by the Delta Variant. This is going to be a major blow for japan And olympic organizers. They have spent more than 15 Billion And years preparing for these games. More than A Billion Dollars alone just to rebuild the national stadium. It is going to be extraordinary to see those stAnds in tokyo completely empty when these games move forward. But even without any spectators at the games, much of the public here in japan is still anxious. I was just at an antiolympics in tokyo just hours ago And people are angry that the games are going ahead when they are in the state of the a emergency when only 15 of the population has been vaccinated. While many peoples businesses are hurting, the largest Sporting Event is being held in their streets And in their stAnds. And now at the same time, it is not just the protesters, many people in general are frustrated, people are also frustrated with thomas bach. Thank you so much. Experts say that five recently identified clusters in the u. S. In areas with low Vaccination Rates could threaten progress not just there but throughout the country. Elizabeth cohen joins me now. Elizabeth, it is not an accident that youre having these clusters of new infections in areas with low, lower Vaccination Rates. Tell us about the danger posed in those areas but also beyond them. Right. So jim, about half of the u. S. Is not fully vaccinated And if those folks were spread out evenly across the united states, those of us vaccinated might be able to help them to a certain extent. But unfortunately theyre not evenly spread out. They are clustered. So lets take a look at these clusters of folks who are not vaccinated. So if you take a look at these maps, feez five circles, those have very low Vaccination Rates And relatively high populations. So this is like kind of like Drive Wood for an outbreak. If you think of an outbreak as a fire, this is the kindling. This is where it is going to happen as you could see mostly in the southeast And also in to southern missouri. Lets take a look at some of the demographics involved with these clusters. That is about 15 Million people in those five clusters And the Vaccination Rate in the clusters is 28 . That is low. The national Vaccination Rate is 48 percent. And it is interesting, there are a few cities like montgomery, alabama, amarillo, texas, in these clusters but they have fewer than 100,000 people so these are relatively small counties that make up these clusters And they cross state lines. It encompassed about eight states. It is a problem for them but a problem for the rest of us when the virus has a chance to spread if person to person, it could get smart And learn how to evade the vaccine, evade our Immune Systems And that is how you get variants. So far the variants that weve seen, the vaccines worked quite well. The fear is the next variant or the next one, or the next one, that the Vaccine Wont Work well against it And be resistant And then were all in trouble, jim. It is exactly as doctors feared with low Vaccination Rates an the emergence of the Delta Variant. One of those clusters is in oklahoma where you are. And i wonder, how concerning is this for your state And what efforts are being made there to break through . Well were watching it very close. As you just mentioned, Southwest Missouri is having a big increase in cases coming across the border to where we have And in the county that work in we have about a 28 Vaccination Rate. Less than 50 of our demographics that is 65 And old her vaccinated. And ub like the comment that was said, it is dry kindling, allowing it to come in quickly. We havent seen as much progress going further west in the state. And in To Tulsa And oklahoma city. That is what qugearing up for. We need to be ready for this, things are moving that way. Were already seeing some issues with shortages not just from koed but from residents all over the area so it is definitely putting some pressure. How do you break through . There are a number of strategies tried And still being tried, one is go through doctors like yourself or people gps, President Biden talking now about getting help from businesses, setting up clinics in house, giving people time off to get vaccinated. But the fact is, disinformation, politics is trumping the science in many cases here. How do you break through it with patients or just average people who still refuse the shot . You know, that is the million Dollar Question And i wish i had the answer. There is a group of people that are very fearful of the vaccine And their overwhelmingly safe. There are some Side Effects that get Media Attention but the truth is if you get this virus, you are much more likely to have those Side Effects any way. So i think youre safer. And i think it is trying to hit the right people who are just a little bit concerned, do i want to do this or not And encouraging them to. Tell me what youre seeing in the break through. Weve had the variants who which did not break through. And thankfully now a large portion of the country is vaccinated. Is what youre seeing now, does it give you concern that the Delta Variant particularly in those low Vaccination Areas will break through in a significant way . Yeah, that is my concern. Our state epidemiologists confirmed that we have delta in the Northeast Oklahoma region. What im seeing personally in a lot of colleagues is that it is getting a younger population. Theyre having different symptoms from the original covid outbreak, so more headache And Sore Throat but not the loss of And-taste'>Smell And Taste so people are not thinking i might have covid, so were really encouraging people if you have any of the symptoms there is not a whole lot of Summer Colds or rsv, but get tested so we know where the pocks are And we have treatments if used early. So it is very incomprehensible. Goodness. Shot 16 times. Haitian officials like you have pointed to mercenaries. Is there any evidence as to who hired these mercenaries . Who is behind this plot . Well, you know, the president of the haiti, in an interview that he did with a Spanish Newspaper had said that that was over five months ago that there were, you know, people trying to assassinate him. So he had advanced warning in that he was basically not going out too much, staying in his house. And then they went into the house And assassinated him. But who . Who was he pointing to at that time . I mean, this is why i am calling for an international investigation. To get to the bottom of this. Because at this point i dont think we have the identity of who did it, but the president had a lot of enemies, strong enemies locally that he was doing a lot of reforms. And he a lot of pushback on those reforms. So certainly only a very strong international investigation with an international prosecutor just like you would have when rafik, the former Prime Minister was assassinated. The u. N. Put ptogether a Panel F international investigators And that is necessary for the case of haiti. Because this is unheard of. A sitting president , democratically elected president assassinated in his home And the First Lady is in Intensive Care And shes wounded And doing better, thank god. But this cannot go unpunished. Next hour, Texas Governor Greg abbott will convene a special legislative session as republicans will try once again to pass a restrictive new Voting Law which makes it harder for people to vote. Six weeks ago the States House democrats staged a walkout to stop a previous version. But State House republicans filed a new Election Overhaul Bill still adding a slew of new restrictions, some changes from the original. Democrats are threatening to sue. I spoke to one of the democratic legislators who stage that walkout six weeks And And do they intend doing the same this time And he said all options are on the table. What are you hearing . Are you expecting a walkout . Could they do that again. Reporter they could do that again. I dont know if that is something that well see today And i dont think if democrats know at this point Because they havent been kept abreast of what is going on. There is a lot of information that just sort of came out in the past 24 hours including the agenda itself. The governor didnt set it until roughly 24 hours before the session was set to begin. So theyve been working behind the scenes And talking to demo democrats, theyre coming back to austin ready to fight And when the house dropped that bill last night, i saw an energy when i was speaking to some of the them to keep that fight going. Now to talk about that bill, there were a lot of similarities to the one from the regular session that got killed, sb7, by the democrats walking out thus denying quorum at the very last minute. The new bill that was dropped by the house, House Bill 3 contained components that you probably remember us talking about like banning drivethru And 24 hour voting, making it a felony for election officials to send Mailin Ballot applications And those power for the partisan Poll Watchers And voting by mail no longer does some of the things that were most controversial from the regular Session Bill that language that lowered the stAndard for over turning elections. It also doesnt ban Sunday Morning voting. That was very controversial Because of course the polls would add an extra hour to sunday voting, jim. But again this is just a bill draft. There are 30 days in this session And the senate has yet to drop its version of election bill. Well be watching. See what strategies they have up their sleeves. Dianne gallagher, thank you very much. And democratic leaders in pennsylvania are vowing to put up a big fight after an ally of former President Trump republican State Senator Doug Mast Re Ano announced a plan to announce a forensic investigation of the president ial election. Keep in mind, there is no evidence of widespread Voter Fraud found by legally mAndated audits And also in several court cases. Democrats called the socalled audit a sham, quite similar to the one what we saw play out in arizona. And pennsylvania has already conducted two types of official Post Election Audits as required by law. He pushed back at the criticism saying there is nothing to fear if there is nothing to hide. Those that think there was no Election Fraud And that the elections were connected perfectly will have the chance to be vindicated. Joining me now is one of the pennsylvania democrats leading the opposition to that socalled audit, josh shapiro. Good to have you back on. I want you to explain to people that the audits that already happened in all 67 counties in pennsylvania And i believe in 63 out of 67 there have been two audits. Please explain those so folks at home now how confident they could be in Pennsylvanias Election results. Right. Lets speak some truth. We have a free And fair And safe secure election that Joe Biden won by just over 80,000 votes here in pennsylvania. After those votes were cast And counted, as it legally required, each of pennsylvanias 67 counties went through audits And in fact most went through two audits as you correctly noted. These were legal audits And they showed, again, the same results that were determined by the counties on election day. Those audits were conducted at times by the counties And at other times by the state. What is being discussed in pennsylvania now, this demAnd of this one Insurrectionist State Senator enabled by his republican colleagues in the state senate, is as follows he is demAnding that the voter data, the private information of 997,000 Pennsylvania Voters from three counties, hes demAnding that it be turned over to him. That he could then presumably use with a Third Party to review. As a result of that, they would be taking the machines an the paper ballots And all of the technology associated with election day, that would leave a massive multimillion Dollars Hole in these counties for them to make up for all of the equipment that they turned over to him. Enormous Privacy Concerns of course. And again, no evidence of widespread fraud to justify it. So what can you do to stop that from happening . Can you . Absolutely. Look, over 40 times donald trump And his enablers including this State Senator engaged in supported litigation to disenfranchise voters in pennsylvania to make it harder for their votes to be counted every single time they went to court, they lost And we won to defend the will of the people here in pennsylvania. So im supremely confident to stop this sham audit. We have directed or advised those three counties not to comply with this dangerous, costly request. The governor has followed suit in that as well. I would anticipate that if this State Senator actually goes forward And issued a subpoena that would be litigated And im confident that we would win that litigation And protect the taxpayers of pennsylvania who at The End of the day would not only suffer enormous privacy losses but millions of dollars in cost. So there is an m. O. Here. It is former President Trumps m. O. You make the false And-use'>Accusation And Use that to back new Voting Restrictions. Weve seen that in a number of states And watching it play out in texas as we speak. Do you expect the same to happen in pennsylvania . It is already happening in pennsylvania. You could draw a straight line between the initial lies from the president , the former president , pardon me, the litigation, more than 40 lawsuits here in pennsylvania, the Big Lie continuing, the violent insurrection on 6'>January 6, now all of the Voting Restriction bills that have been introduced here in pennsylvania, in texas, past in states like georgia, this is part of a coordinated effort to make it harder for people to vote. Our black And brown, Disabled Pennsylvanians And many others. I simply will not stAnd for that. Thankfully we have a democratic governor who has indicated he would use his Veto Pen And indeed has already done so on some bills to stop this assault on our democracy. The sad And-weve'>Fact And Weve seen this on a number of fronts in the last few years in this country, on covid, on vaccines, on the 2020 election, is that disinformation works. There is an enormous portion of this country, principally republican voters who do not believe that the 2020 election was legitimate. And as a key swing state, do you see that widespread in the state, where Pennsylvania Voters buy the lie . Im not sure i would say it is widespread but i certainly see it. But i think it is important to know, jim, who could blame the public, right. Think about this for a second. Their elected leaders have been lying to them for more than a year. Their elected leaders have spent taxpayer dollars to tell them something that is simply untrue over And over And over again. I blame the leaders, the State Senator that participated in the violent insurrection on 6'>January 6. I blame the leaders of those caucuses, that enable people like him. That is the reality of what the public is hearing every day And now is a moment in time where leaders have a responsibility to the truth. Jeremy, one key thing that the president expected to address is how to keep afghan interpreters who work for the u. S. Safe, how will he do that . Reporter that is exactly right, jim. We are expecting according to multiple officials that the president will address the fate of some of those thousAnds of afghan interpreters And others who have helped u. S. Military forces over the last two decades of that war. Many of them still waiting on the the Visa Applications that they have put in to try And get relocated out of afghanistan as u. S. Troops withdraw from that country. One Administration Official saying that president will address plans to begin relocating many of those interpreters in august. There are also plans to relocate some of them to Third Party countries as they await decision on their Visa Applications to move to the united states. But really, jim, President Biden is going to be addressing broadly u. S. Support for afghanistan, continued support for afghanistan, even after those last troops leave afghanistan in a timeline that is now expected to be by The End of august rather than by September 11th as the president had initially said. The president right now is getting an update on the situation on the ground. This comes daying after u. S. Troops, the last u. S. Troops left bagram airfield, that Iconic American base in afghanistan that has been the hub of the u. S. Presence in this ka country over the nearly two decades of war. The president is going to detail the humanitarian assistance that is expected to follow there. But one thing that is interesting, jim, i could tell you from speaking with officials here, obviously the president has weighed this decision for a long time but he is not having any regrets from what officials are telling us despite what were seeing in afghanistan in terms of the taliban continuing to take over a lot of territories, especially in the northern parts of the country, rather the president believes that after two decades of war if the Afghan Army could not hold territory, that is a sign that this is in deed the right decision for the united states to make. And so you could expect them to continue to explain the rational of his decision And the future of that effort in afghanistan, jim. Well be watching for the comments. Threes company was kind of a terrible show. And boy, did you want to be around them. It is a little light, right. But we find out that we could care about these people. Nobody was trying to hurt anybody. Were just trying to make you laugh And feel good. As a gay man, i like at a character like jack on Threes Company And part of me said youre allowing this State Man to say hes one thing And hes not. But at the same time, hearing those words on television was important at the time to say, hes willing to become a part of a community that is an other. Well joining us now is the acor christopher knight, he played Peter Brady on a sitcom you might have heard of the Brady Bunch. I grew up on reruns. So it is a real pleasure. Christopher, to meet you today. Big picture for a moment. I think people forget that the Brady Bunch was somewhat ahead of its time. It portrayed a blended family, right. The product of And-effect'>Divorce And Effect coming together happily which is far more normal And accepted now than it was then. And i wonder when you look back at that, did that have some importance to the message. First of all, good morning And thank you for having me. Interestingly, i never really thought of it as ahead of its time but perhaps actually out of sync with its time in that it was more of a Throwback Family Sitcom portraying families of the late 50s And early 60s And i know were only talking about the late the late 60s when we were doing the show, nonetheless there has been a lot of innocence lost in the 60s. And but the fact is that we were a blended family. We were at the same time as yours mine, And ours, the two were creatively invented separately. One didnt be get the other. So there was interest turning to the idea that there were divorced individuals with children of their own living under one household. So in that regard we were in the time. But people think of the bradys as a wonderfully Iconic American family in a simpler time. I was two years from being drafted into the Vietnam War which was contemporaneous with the show. We were playing a clip from an episode Because i watch the show, i know exactly what episode that was And your voice was changing. But they used that when you guys were singing And recording a song. It is so familiar. Listen, of course, it did Ray A kind of fictional super happy life in southern california. Do you believe it stAnds the test of time . To some degree or is it a relic from just another period, not just of the country, but in the Way Entertainment portrayed the country . I think it does stAnd the test of time. It is aspirational in that it becomes harder And harder to raise a family in such a perfect manner. But we could all try. And i think that is what this show provides. In fact, the whole community, it is the first place that we get to identify who we are And how we stack up or where we fit in. And it is also a place that is a place of protection And the bradys was a wonderful example of that. I think children And babies are the same as they ever were. Perhaps it is been compressed in the acceptable of its content to the age of the audience it might have been originally invented for four years, today it might be 4yearolds to 11yearolds.
