And covid is on the rise again in the decision about whether to get vaccinated or not is becoming a matter of life and death. Last month 130 people died of covid in maryland and according to marylands governor, larry hogan, none of them were vaccinated. Its really the same story all across america. A look at all the data and theyre mostly in the southeastern United States going a bit into southern missouri. But thats where the clusters are. Thats where that dry Kindling Wood is that could reignite this pandemic. And make things difficult for us because it encourages, as you mentioned, these variants. The more it spreads, the more variants arise. The more variants arise the more we might get a variant that would be resistant to the vaccine. Lets Take A Look at the nature of these clusters and what we know about them. When you put these five clusters together, you have about 15 Million people. Its largely in the southeast. In these clusters the Vaccination Rate is only 28 for fully vaccinated. Nationally its 48 . And whats interesting is that 92 of the counties in these clusters have less than 100,000 people. So there are a few bigger cities, such as amarillo, texas, or montgomery, alabama, but for the most part these are relatively small counties that when clumped together form these potentially dangerous clusters. This morning, leading scientists making the strongest case yet for covid19 emerging from an animal origin, pushing back in a way against the Lab Leak Theory. The group of 20 experts from Around The World write, quote, while the possibility of a Lab Accident cannot be entirely dismissed and may be near impossible to falsify, the conduit for emergence is highly unlikely relative to the numerous and repeated Human Animal Contacts that occur routinely in the Wildlife Trade. I want to bring in Robert Gary with tulane medical school, one scientists who signed this paper. Thank you for being with us. Talk about the evidence you looked and how you reached this conclusion. So, we looked at the epidemiology of the early cases in wuhan. And most of those cases were linked to a large market that we now know sold wild animals. Susceptible to sarscov2. And some of the other cases linked to other similar markets In The City Of Wuhan. So we found that most of the early cases In The City Of Wuhan lived near the large Wildlife Market and far away from the wuhan institute of virology. And we looked at the virus itself and the genetic changes that occurred as it spread through the Human Population and now we can say that sarscov2 was not the result of Genetic Engineering or so called gain of function research. So, what have you seen that i dont want to use the word discredits or draws you away or what about the Lab Leak Theory you look and say this doesnt make sense . Theres only the circumstance that theres a large Viology Lab In The City Of Wuhan where the first cases were detected but there are large lab. Wuhan is the largest city in central china. A hub for the Wildlife Trade and other commerce. Its natural that the virus like sarscov2 would emerge there. And the other thing is that the Lab Leak Theory cannot account for the fact that most of the early cases were linked to this Wildlife Trade and thats in perfect parallel to the multiple spillovers of the first Sar Sfrrks the Wildlife Trade many years ago. What about the reporting that there were employees from this Wuhan Lab who did go to the hospital with some kind of flulike symptoms that may, we dont know for sure, that may have been linked to covid. So there was a large surge of influenza In The City Of Wuhan in late 2019. Its very likely that those people had just the flu. And in fact, we do need to look at those cases and the Intelligence Community needs to figure out what possibly was going on there. But if there were say three cases of covid19 at the wuhan institute of virology, you would have seen a lot of other cases as well, asymptomatic cases and less severe cases than the reporting thats been going on about those three supposed cases. And i want to end on this, the biden administration asked for an investigation into the possibility of a Lab Leak Theory. Do you think this is a waste of time . We need to put this to rest because its taking away from other important science that needs to be done. We need to be investigating the animals that carry viruses that can spill over into humans and we dont want another pandemic perhaps one thats even more catastrophic than the one we just that were still going through to happen again in just a few years. Now joining us to talk about this a little more, Washington Post columnist, josh rogen, has extensively covered the investigations into the origin of coronavirus. And to be clear about what joshs reporting has suggested, its that the Lab Leak Theory was dismissed too early and too definitively without compelling evidence, right, josh . So when you hear Professor Gary talk about the evidence hes looking at, whats your take away . Right, john. Its very clear that Professor Gary and a bunch of scientists who agree with him have been of the opinion that the natural Origin Theory is more likely ever since the pandemic emerged last year. This is the position that Professor Gary and his friends established for themselves a year ago. Their Position Hasnt changed. I didnt hear anything new actually in what Professor Gary said or in what they wrote that would add to their the strength of their position. Theres another group of scientists out there including Robert Redfield the former head of the Cdc And David baltimore, the former president of Cal Tech have the exact opposite opinion. Theres no scientific consensus. You can look at the data and come to completely opposite conclusions. A lot of people like me said we need to investigate both theories. The natural origin and Lab Leak Theory. We cant do that because the chinese Government Wont allow us to investigate the Lab Leak Theory. A couple things that were a little misleading. The first cases that were reported in china were not actually linked to any of the markets, according to the chinese governments own research the time the chinese cdc disavowed the Market Theory in May 2020 and there are no actual links to the Wildlife Trade. There are suggested links. In other words, there are animals in the markets that could have been a link, but theres never been any animal found that had any real link. I think sort of the presentation that Robert Gary just gave with us a little misleading in that regard, but again hes of the opinion that it came from the market which is right next to the lab. I dont know why he said theyre far apart. Theyre really close to each other. A lot of people feel a different way. We need to get to the bottom one way or the other. Big problem is theres no way to get to the bottom, one thing because china cleaned out the market. You cant deeply investigate that theory. And the other hand, theyre not giving us results from people who worked at the Wuhan Lab. So theres just a Big Block in either direction here. Well, theres a lot more we can find out. First of all on the u. S. Side the intelligence that u. S. Robert gary about, theres a lot more the biden administration could and should release. What we heard those six researchers did not have the flu. The chinese denied there were any sick researchers but what the u. S. Intelligence believes they had covidlike symptoms and working on coronaviruses in the secret part of the lab the part they didnt tell us about and part they didnt tell Robert Gary about. Thats lot of u. S. Intelligence that should come to light and thats what congress is focussed on and has to be more pressure on the chinese government to play ball and allow access to the labs to put back up the Virus Data Base they took offline. It was supposed to be a public Data Base to make the scientists available, to make the data available. Its an urgent issue of national security and public health. We cant throw up our hands and say, i guess the chinese government is not going to cooperate. We have to use the tools of our national Power And Influence to pressure them to cooperate because, again, its an urgent public Health Issue thats affecting us to this day. Hang on one second. I guess Professor Gary stuck around and has been listening to this and you wanted to respond. Well, sure. I mean, actually the wuhan institute of virology, the place where they do all the live Virus Culture and you know the isolation of coronaviruses is about 20 Miles Away from the large seafood market. So, that is a fact that you have to put on the table there. In terms of the three researchers, you know, i dont know if those people exist or not. I do hope that we have firm intelligence on that. I agree that we need to get that piece of information either proven or disproven one way or the other. Yeah. I would just say the Wuhan Cdc is literally about 1,000 meters from the one market. The point is that to say it started from the market should be backed by evidence and actual first earliest cases that we know of had no connection to the market. Thats whats clear. The Market Theory is really not supported by any evidence. And for u. S. Let me ask the professor to respond to that. Actually there is a lot of evidence. Theres epidemiological evidence, theres genetic evidence that we have that there was, you know, no way that anybody could have put this virus together, cobbled together in the lab from bits and pieces from other viruses. Thats pretty strong scientific evidence that this Virus Wasnt built at the wuhan institute of virology. I need to say that top virologists disagree. The Bottom Line here is that if youre going to suspect of u. S. Intelligence and confident in the chinese government statements youre going to come out with one Conclusion And Suspect of the chinese government statements and confident in u. S. Intelligence then youre going to come out with a different conclusion. I think its very clear that the chinese government is engaged in a massive coverup focussed on the lab. Theyre thwarting the Lab Investigation and i ask dr. Gary why not investigate the lab . Shouldnt we investigate the lab even if you think its unlikely really the only way to settle this and why even come to a conclusion when we can just honestly state between all of us that we dont know, you dont know, i dont know, John Berman, you dont know. I certainly dont. And we have to figure it out. Its not helpful to say the Lab Theory is very unlikely because you dont know that. Professor we have to have a forensic investigation, not a scientific investigation and by the way they dont have to have manipulated the virus in order for the lab to be involved. Think could have captured the virus, gotten to the lab, the bats and penguins were not in the market. The bats were 1,000 Miles Away, they could have brought a natural virus to the lab and could have leaked. Lets let the Professor Respond to that. Go ahead. Professor. Well, it is hard to respond to all of that, but there really is no evidence that the virus leaked from the lab. I totally disagree. Theres opportunities for the virus to spilled over from nature, just like it occurred in the first outbreak of s aars almost 20 years ago now. Lets put some of this information thats out there that is coming from some questionable sources and put that to rest. And i do agree that the chinese have not been as transparent as they should be about the early cases, the early epidemiology of the outbreak. In particular, they havent been transparent about Wildlife Trade and all the animals that were being sold at this market. So we do need to have some Diplomacy Work with the chinese government, try to figure out what went on there exactly so we dont have another pandemic like weve all been through and that were still going through. Im going to change subjects here with josh because you also wrote over the last day about something i think a lot of people didnt see happen yesterday, which is that the biden administration met with the brother of the Saudi Crown Prince mohammed bin salman, his brother the philip a lot of people connect to the murder of Jamal Khashoggi, this is a picture of him meeting with different State Department the first picture is him meeting with different State Department officials here in the United States. Why did the u. S. Take this meeting . Why is the u. S. Meeting with someone who some people connect to the murder of Jamal Khashoggi . What does it tell you . You know, its a great question. The biden administration is trying to have its cake and eat it too. They want to say theyre being tough on Saudi Arabia for its atrocious and worsening human Rights Record and at the same time want to do business with Saudi Arabia on the areas of mutual interest. They did that by welcoming back the brother of mohammed bin salman, the guy who the cia asserts was responsible for the Murder And Dismemberment of Washington Post contributing columnist Jamal Khashoggi and his brother lured him into istanbul consulate where he was later murdered. We cant prove he knew he was going to be murdered. So it seems like a weird thing to invite the guy who was connected to the murder back to have a bunch of pictures and give him the red Carpet Treatment and let him meet with the Defense Secretary and national security adviser. It sends the signal to the saudis and to the region and to the Human Rights community, frankly that the biden administrations protestations against saudi atrocities are just that, just words and not actions. It signals a return to Business As Usual and thats spells disaster for people who believe in pressing the saudi regime to improve on its human Rights Records and also in my opinion insults the legacy of Jamal Khashoggi and reanythings on bidens promise to deliver justice to jamal and his family. She covers, football, basketball but you need to give her more things to do because youre Feeling Pressure about your crappy, longtime record on diversity, which i myself like know personally from the female side of it, go for it. Just find it somewhere else. Youre not going to find it with me and taking my thing away. She thought she was speaking privately but her words were beamed back to espn through a camera set up for her live shots. The recording, which she called a spy video, Made The Rounds Inside Espn last summer, stirring racial tensions amid a nationwide reckoning about racism. This is just a really unfortunate situation. Reporter now its public and even the Nba Commissioner is weighing in. I think its particularly unfortunate that two women in the industry are pitted against each other. Reporter Espn Management is coming under scrutiny. Its a huge mess for espn. Clay travis the founder of conservative sports Media Company Outkick calling her a hypocrite. Many of the super woke White People love the idea of Diversity And Inclusion as long as their own jobs arent impacted by that Diversity And Inclusion push. Reporter others are pointing out that this tape leaked right as Taylors Contract is about to expire. Possibly giving her more leverage. Shes not commenting. But the times quoted her email to executives last summer citing complaints about racial insensitivity. She said simply being a front facing black woman at this company has taken its toll. Physically and mentally. Nickels is apologizing for disappointing those i hurt particularly Maria Taylor. And saying shes grateful to be on the team. Espn pulled her from Sideline Duties and appointed malika andrews, who is black. And it was taylor who introduced andrews on tuesday night. And now its my pleasure to welcome in malika andrews who will be on the sideline for the first time in an nba Finals Game in her career. Reporter now as onlookers speculate about nickels and taylors futures at espn, the Nba Commissioner is speaking out against cancel culture. People recognize that people make mistakes, that Careers Shouldnt be erased, you know, by a single comment. Reporter brian stelter, cnn, New York. Lets talk about this now with journalist maria schiavocampo, she is the host of run tell this which is a wonderful podcast. Youve been tracking this story. This is something thats been going on for months but very much coming to a head with this New York times story recently coming out. What do you think what youre seeing at this moment . Yeah. The problem here is not that Rachel Nickels was trying to defend her turf. That happens all the time in television. The problem is that in defending her turf she thinks Maria Taylor got that job because shes black, not because she earned it and not because she deserved it. Thats the issue here. And Thats Something that a lot of black people from all walks of life can identify with. Were often viewed as unqualified for the spaces that were in based on the assumption that were some type of diversity token. When the reality is we are almost always having to be twice as good to get half as much, overqualified and undervalued. Theres also a point here thats kind of interesting in that Rachel Nickels is saying this. Rachel nichols is the stepdaughter of Diane Sawyer now by all accounts very hard working, very good at her job, but it would be hard to convince me that she hasnt benefitted somewhat from those associations. For her to make that claim that taylor didnt earn her position is ironic. I think that default to in her comment is something that is lost. Ive talked with so many people about this, a lot of people, White People, dont key in on that assumption that is made, oh, that its because Maria Taylor is a person of color that shes being given this assignment. But you know, you and i we were babies together in news. Yeah. And you and i have talked for years about this. You personally have experienced this as a black woman, as someone just speak to this. You got a full ride to Journalism School and people would make assumptions about you because of this trope. Yeah. You and i go back like babies and pacifiers. And i have faced this in my life many, many times. I felt like i was there as a diversity token. I was there on a full academic ride and finished with a perfect gpa. Were always having to prove and overprove ourselves. Part of the issue with what were seeing now with espn is not just in whats happened recently but that they have had a year to deal with this. This happened a year ago. They didnt respond to this because it happened. They responded to it because it became public. And when you look at the way they responded initially, when the very first statement was put out last july, they didnt mention Maria Taylor by name at all. Their statement was complaining about how rachel Nickels Privacy was violated by the leaking of this phone call. In fact, Maria Taylor, the first time they reached out to her was not to see how she was doing but to ask her if she had leaked the tape. And to this day the only Espn Employee who has faced any kind of disciplinary action was the black Video Producer who shared with Maria Taylor as a courtesy to say you should see this. She was suspended for two weeks and since left the company. Espn has a long history of complaints about being insensitive to racial diversity issues. That is why they made the statement they made and i spoke with Folks Yesterday and what should be noted in demands, theyre not speaking just espn, they want to speak to disney and their bosses because they dont have any faith that espn can manage this. He has upped Entry Level Pay by 40 in just the past four months. I was offering 18 to 22 an hour and i got no applications. I increased to 23 and i got none. I increased to 25 and theyre starting to trickle in right now. Reporter this Construction Company has 51 active projects, mostly in the commercial space. Theyre looking for 20 people to fill open positions at every skill level. Its a constant challenge, to a point where weve actually gone and have two internal recruiters full time. Reporter the industry shut down for just a few months during the pandemic, but in that time, many workers moved on with no new talent coming in. Well, i think we have to continue to be proactive, you know, in all spaces and try to keep people in the industry. A local Health Secretary says 15 participants and one other person tested positive for covid19. Just one day before the event. Authorities say they received an anonymous call informing them that people were suffering respiratory symptoms consistent with coronavirus. Here now with the details, maria santana, anchoring correspondent in spanish. They had symptoms in the pageant went on . Whats going on here . Reporter this is a very concerning incident and this is what Health Officials in mexico are telling us happened. These contestants were exhibiting symptoms consistent with covid19 in the days prior to the event. So much so that the way that the Health Department found out was that someone called an anonymous tip and said, hey, at least one of these girls has covid19. So they went in to investigate. The event went on on july 1st. It wasnt until July 2nd that the Health Department said that they received results, they required testing the day the date went in, which was the day of the event for the girls to get tested. It wasnt until the next day 15 of the 32 contestants tested positive for covid19, and one other person involved in the pageant tested positive as well. Heres where things get really hairy. The Pageant Organizers knew that these girls were sick and they pressed ahead and went on with the event anyway, told the girls to be quiet about it and not say anything to the press. And also that they it was supposed to happen on july 3rd, but they moved It Up to july 1st, amid all the rumors there was an outbreak in the pageant. We spoke to the Health Secretary of the state of chihuahua which is where the event took place. He said that he is going to investigate this, but that basically there could be sanctions for Pageant Organizers of the event where the venue this all took place. He is telling us that there is a presumption that the organizers knew, its just a presumption at this point, but an investigation, you know, will lead them to see if this is the case. That puts a lot of people at risk. Is it possible that it spread beyond the people who showed up originally sick . This is what we dont know at this point because, yeah, as much as the secretary of health, chihuahua, fernando said they are going to investigate it. They knew July 2nd. It wasnt until a couple days ago this was leaked to the press and they came out with a statement saying, were investigating this. We dont know. You think about pageants and how they work, the hair dressers, they dorm together, dress together, bussed around together.
